Students, school staff prepare for back to school frenzy

August will always be associated with the back to school frenzy of purchasing school supplies, determining who your child’s teacher will be, trying on clothes to see what fits from last year, checking on bus schedules and making sure your camera is well charged for the treasured first day of school pictures.

It’s important for all motorists to be aware of the decreased speed limits around school zones as well as increased pedestrian, vehicle and bus traffic particularly in their neighborhoods. As a reminder, state law prohibits cell phone use within a school speed zone. Fines for this offense start at $75.

“It’s hard to believe, but the first day of school in District 58 is right around the corner,” said Jennifer Waldorf, communications coordinator for Downers Grove Grade School District 58 (DGSD58).

The first day of school for all 13 grade schools in DGSD58 is set for Monday, August 27.

This will be a partial student attendance day. The shortened school day for grades first through sixth will be 8:20 to 11:40 a.m. while the middle school will be 8:35 to 11:51 a.m. (see website for kindergarten times). Tuesday, August 28 will be the regular school hours.

Regarding traffic patterns, no major changes are planned.

However, with the completion of the Belmont underpass, there is now a stoplight at Haddow and Belmont right

All six of Woodridge School District 68 (WSD68) grade schools as well as Jefferson Jr. High will begin Wednesday, August 22 with a full day but kindergarten classes don’t start until Thursday, August 23.

“All students are strongly encouraged to be there day number one because every day counts,” said Amy Melinder, Director of Community

Engagement.

The first day of attendance is a full day, with elementary schools in session from 8:20 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. and junior high school in session from 8:10 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. (see website for kindergarten times).

The big news at WSD68 is their new breakfast program.

All returning students will keep the same account and debit card as they had last year for lunch. New students will receive a new account and debit card.

Westmont’s Community School District 201 (WCSD201) doesn’t begin until Wednesday, August 29. Westmont’s High School starts at 8 a.m. while Westmont Junior High at 8:15 a.m. Contact grade schools for more information about school times.

Fire alarm ordinance causes controversy

Recently, a decision against LisleWoodridge Fire Protection District (LWFPD) was announced that could affect the response time of the fire department to commercial buildings and multiple family units.

In September 2009, the LWFPD passed an ordinance requiring alarm system owners of all commercial and multiple family units to switch to the LWFPD’s direct dispatch agency and terminate their existing monitoring contracts through their alarm company.

When the alarm is activated, the call is directed to their monitoring system dispatcher first.The LWFPD basically banned any third party dispatch service.

A federal court last week issued a modified permanent injunction

against barring the LWFPD fire district from prohibiting third party dispatch systems and ordering it to cease any activities related to the monitoring of fire alarms.

“The basis for the need to eliminate a third party dispatcher is for the safety of our citizens and firefighters,” said LWFPD Bureau Chief Jim French.“When the alarm goes off now, the call goes directly to our dispatch system which results in a faster response time.”

When a call goes through a third party system, that alarm company dispatcher has to determine which fire protection district the fire is in before contacting the appropriate dispatcher thus wasting valuable time, according to French.

revenue for the alarm companies since their contracts dictate a cost to the system owner for this service usually on a monthly basis. But, the alarm companies are charging LWFPD with creating a monopoly since their customers in this fire district are prohibited from using their dispatch service.

“We’ve gone through several court decisions throughout these proceedings,” said French. “At this point, I don’t want to comment any further because we don’t want to muddy the waters.”

There were many reasons for the lawsuit, the first being interference with contracts, according to Kevin Lehan, executive director of the Illinois Electronic Security Association.

Initially, the court voted in favor of the alarm companies by entering a permanent injunction against the LWFPD.The fire district then countered by appealing to the 7th U.S Circuit Court of Appeals, which issued an order staying the injunction.

The case was later directed back to the U.S. District Court in Illinois where the modified permanent injunction order was issued last week.

“The injunction is still good news for alarm companies, as well as business owners in the Lisle and Woodridge communities,” said Lehan. “The impact for the business community is that they will again have a choice of service providers.”

Woodridge salon raises money for kids with cancer

SalonAria Hair Salon,Woodridge, is hosting a whole day of fun to raise money for Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, August 26.

“We were originally going to raise money for the Cancer Society, but then we discovered only a small portion of the donation will go to the cause,” said Eme Corrigan, Salon Aria.“But with Bear Necessities, more of the money raised will go directly to helping kids with cancer and it’s a local organization.”

Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is a Chicagobased organization dedicated to providing support to those who are affected by pediatric cancer. Founded in late 1992 by Kathleen A. Casey, the foundation is named in memory of her eightyear-old son, Barrett “Bear” Krupa, who died after a five and a half year battle with Wilms Tumor, a pediatric cancer.

“We have an industry high of 80% going directly to the cause,” said Courtney Krupa, Bear Necessities vice president/ director of marketing.

Bear Necessities has three programs: The Bear Hugs Program is a customized experience that helps children going through cancer and provides immediate family support for financial burden and essential needs.

“We try to create a happy inhospital experience with the Bear Hugs Program to help them feel normal again and bring joy to their challenging world,” said Krupa. “Recently, we hosted an ice cream social serving ice cream and toppings to the patients and family for the Pediatric Oncology Unit at College of DuPage.”

The Bear Program also creates a wish-type experience for individual patients.

“It’s similar to Make-A-Wish Foundation but on a more intimate level,” said Krupa.“Depending on the medical situation and age of child, we’ve granted requests for concert tickets, Xbox games, meeting a local sports hero, trips to the zoo, and other personal

experiences.”

Bear Discoveries raises money for medical research grants awarded nationwide primarily to junior investigative researchers who are making meaningful advancements towards a cure and therapies for pediatric cancers.

Bear Empowerment supports service grants awarded across the nation to pediatric oncology facilities and organizations for programs that directly impact patients, their families and hospital facilities.

Along with the haircuts, color, feather extensions for men, women and children, Salon Aria will have raffle prizes. Big Wig Machine and Daysleeper bands will be playing live throughout the day.

Superintendent passes leadership class just in time for new school year

As educators prepare for the start of another school year, a Woodridge superintendent will be returning to her district with specialized training to improve school programs in her district.

Woodridge School District 68 Superintendent Cathy Skinner is one of 23 superintendents, who just completed the inaugural Illinois School for Advanced Leadership (ISAL) training program. The program provided superintendents with two years of research, training and learning in leadership methods designed to help better student achievement.

Skinner was a member of ISAL’s first graduating class.

“These last two years in my ISAL classes have truly been an exceptional experience for me,” said Skinner, who has been

“Given all of the challenges facing superintendents and public education in Illinois, we thought it was important to provide a unique opportunity through rigorous curriculum, training and experiences for those men and women who were willing to push themselves beyond what is expected of a superintendent,” said IASA executive director Brent Clark.

Downers Grove residents to get 19% decrease in village portion of property taxes

Residents of Downers Grove can look forward to a 19% decrease in village portion of property taxes due to a change in stormwater billing.

An ordinance to amend how the stormwater infrastructure system is being accessed to residents was the main topic of discussion at last week’s Downers Grove Village Board meeting.

“This is a change to the whole water billing system,” said Downers Grove Village Mayor Martin Tully.

“The village will continue to fund the stormwater system but would like to switch to a fee-based system,” said Stan Balicki, public works assistant director for Downers Grove. “All properties benefit.The village will be reducing property taxes by 19% or $2.24 million beginning with the 2012 levy (collected in

2013).”

In January 2013, the village will implement a monthly stormwater fee that will be charged to all property owners. Revenues generated by the fee will be allocated to the maintenance and operating costs of the stormwater infrastructure system.

“The shift in funding will remove all stormwater related infrastructure and maintenance costs from the village portion of the property tax,” said Village Manager David Fielding.

Trustee Geoff Neustadt discussed the need for additional staff.

“We already have a stormwater administrator in place but will need a part-time GIS system administrator to answer questions and maintain a database,” said Fielding.

The next step will be an extensive public engagement effort through social networking, village website, email, and direct mailings. The effort will be to create awareness of utility changes prior to receiving a bill, understand financial impact and to learn how you can lower your bill, according to Balicki.

The village’s stormwater drainage system is provided by three creeks: •Lacey Creek which is north of Ogden Avenue; •St. Joseph Creek which flows through the central portion of the Village; •Prentiss Creek, which is south of 63rd Street All three creeks drain westward and empty into the East Branch of the DuPage River.

Woodridge Library ‘under siege?’

I have found that one of the centerpieces of any town, and a source of calm, is a library. It offers an appeal to many, may it be for resources, information of gatherings within its doors.

This has not been the case this summer at the Woodridge Public Library. The library has been under seige, surrounded by metal scaffolding the last three months and repeated bombardment of construction noise. It has been said by library officials that the fireproofing is being replaced, among other things, at a cost of 300,000 dollars. It has me wondering, especially on a building that is only fifteen years old, why? With this summer hotter than normal, a library offers refuge form the heat but not as of late. Why not have gotten it right the first time around and use the money for

other sorely needed items, such as new and more comfortable chairs in the computer areas, better P.A. system throughout the whole building so everyone can hear announcement, or an H.V.A.C. system to cool the whole library evenly. How about revising periodicals or an automatic checkout system, like at Indian Prairie or Bolingbrook libraries. There are new vending machines though in the lobby, a new source of revenue or added waste? At the end of July I was told the scaffolding would be down in two weeks but here we are, school almost here and still up. Libraries are an asset to the community it is in, don’t turn off and away those people and think of them also.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Aug. 11, Brent Methling, 19, from 717 Maplewood Court,Willowbrook, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs following a traffic stop near the intersection of Woodridge Drive and Route 53.

A criminal damage to vehicle occurred sometime during the overnight hours on Aug. 11 in the 2600 block of Burr Ridge Court. Unknown persons slashed all four tires of a vehicle and poured an unknown substance over the hood of the vehicle.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Aug. 11, Maria Galindo, 37, from 2466 Forest Drive, Woodridge, was charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, endangering the life or health of a child, disorderly conduct and resisting a police officer following an incident at Target in the 2300 block of 63rd Street.

At approximately 8 p.m. on Aug. 12, Courtney Pringles, 44, from 4732 Main Street, Lisle, was charged with retail theft after he removed various bottles of alcoholic liquor from Target located in the 2300 block of 63rd Street.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., Amal Centers Jr., 33, from 2538 Forest Drive, Woodridge, was charged with disorderly conduct following an incident in the 2500 block of Forest Drive.

A theft occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Aug. 13 at Dominick’s in the 2300 block of 63rd Street.

Unknown persons removed a wallet from a purse located in a shopping cart.

At approximately 5:40 p.m. on Aug. 13, Klaus Germann, 63, from 20w135 98th St., Lemont, was charged with criminal trespass to property following an incident at Target in the 2300 block of 63rd Street.

A criminal damage to property occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Aug. 13 in the 7700 block of Woodward Ave.

Sometime between 1 a.m. and 1:40 a.m., an unknown offender(s) damaged a mailbox in the 400 block of West 61st Street. The estimated damage is $100.

The suspect was described as male, White, 6 foot to 6 foot 2 inches tall, 170 to 200 pounds, 21 to 30 years of age, brown hair, wearing a blue t-shirt and tan shorts. The suspect fled the area on foot southbound. The estimated loss is $600. The incident remains under investigation. Benet looks to reload, defend title

After posting a 39-3 record last season and an IHSA Class 4A state title, the Benet girls volleyball team is returning three varsity starters and five other returning players from the ESPN No. 6 in the nation.

Returning are Shelia Doyle, a 5-foot, 5-five-inch senior libero, who was second on the team in digs a year ago and first in passing rating, Hannah Kaminsky a 5-11 senior setter who led team in assists last year and Brittany Pavich, a 6-3 junior middle who started more than half the matches last year.

Also back from last season’s team are 6-0 senior outside hitter Cara Mattaliano, 5-11 senior outside hitter Caileen Moran, 5-11 senior middle Abby Willet, 5-9 senior outside hitter Nikki Barnes and 5-6 senior libero Brittany Kmieciak.

“She is the best defender no one knows about and would start at libero for 99 percent of all teams,” Baker said of Kmieciak.

That being said, the Redwings do lose a lot of fire power from the state title team.

Their two star hitters both graduated, as Jenna Jendryk is at Virginia Tech and Meghan Haggerty is at Wisconsin.

Maddie Hagerty, who was a key contributer as a sophomore last year, transferred to Wheaton St. Francis before this year.

“We graduated ten seniors and 95 percent of our offense, yet this team has set extremely high goals for themselves,” said coach Brad Baker.“Losing so many key players we have lots to prove and we are very motivated to do so. We project to have fifteen players on the roster and all fifteen project to play college volleyball. We have some of the

best defenders in the state and this will be our best defense team we have ever had.”

Looking to fill the voids of the lost players will be juniors Stephanie Sinnappon (5-11, outside hitter and setter), Caroline Wolf (5-6, libero), Kelly O’Malley (5-6 libero), Ashley Hitchcock (5-10 outside hitter), Whitney Battoe (5-9 outside hitter) and sophomores Racheal Fara (6-2 middle) and Natalie Canulli (5-9 outside hitter).

The schedule for Benet won’t be easy in the East Suburban Catholic Conference with the likes of Nazareth (Sept. 5), Marist (Sept. 27) and Joliet Catholic Academy (Oct. 4).

The Redwings also face nonconference opponents York (Aug. 29) and Neuqua Valley (Sept. 5) as well as their own Benet Invite the weekend of Aug. 24, which features York, Hinsdale Central, Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie, Moline, Lemont and West Aurora.

Benet will get rolling right away with a tough match Aug. 21 against St. Charles East in a rematch of last year’s state semifinal.

The Redwings already have two of its player committed for college, as Pavich agreed in July to attend Boston College after next year.

Most recently, Doyle committed to the University of North Carolina.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to attend University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,” said Doyle, who was recently named to the Prepvolleyball. com Defense Dandies list as one of the best defenders in the nation. “The excellent academic reputation provides the perfect setting for my college career.”

In his fifth year as head caoch of Downers Grove North, coach Mark Wasik knows who is key players will be this season, but that’s it.

Coming off a 22-16 season last year and a regional title, the Trojans return junior rightside hitter Katherine Mahlke, who already has college offers from Ohio University, Miami (Ohio) Wichita State, Cincinnati, and has interest from Northwestern,

Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, University of Miami, Butler and Auburn.

She is a three-year starter who tallied 203 kills, with a .250 kill efficiency last year and led the team with 33 blocks, while serving 15 aces.

North also returns senior libero Carolyn Nojiri, who Wasik says will be one of the top liberos in the state this year.

“She will play volleyball in college but has gone unexposed as she played softball in the summer,” Wasik said. “Recruiting will pick up for her.”

Another three-year varsity starter, she posted 334 digs, 46 assists, 22 aces, and received serve at a 93.4 percent.

Also returning are Hannah Rogoz, a senior outside hitter, who saw limited action last year,.

“She has developed nicely during her club season and will be counted on to be one of our offensive weapons this year,” Wasik said.

Senior middle blocker Karissa Brazdys tallied 61 kills, 29 blocks, and 8 aces last year, while senior setter Abby Crane will be expected to run the offense this year in either a 6-2 or 5-1. She

Naperbrook offers challenging greens

It didn’t hit me until a couple days after I played Naperbrook Golf Course that the greens were quite challenging.

Thinking back on my round, I realized I had a lot of difficult putts up and down slopes. That made me think that the greens are the most unique feature of the course.

There might have been even more hills and slopes on the green than what I saw, but I had to deal with them on hole Nos. 1, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18.

The course starts with a straightforward hole with a dogleg left at the second hole.

Then comes the par-5 third hole that offers quite the challenge.

It is a sharp dogleg right with water to the right and in front of the dogleg. Your options are either to keep it left and make it a long three shot hole, or try to hit it over the water and have a chance to reach a fairly tight green in two. Definitely was one of my favorite holes.

Both par-3s on the front side (holes 4 and 8) had bunkers guarding them, making them difficult holes. After a short par4 fifth hold and a longer par-4 sixth hole, my favorite hole was up next.

The par-5 seventh hole starts off pretty wide and then narrows greatly at the green.

There are hazards on both sides of the green with a small fairway in front of the green. This makes it a very difficult hole to reach in two and it is a must to be accurate with your approach shot.

Holes No. 12 and No. 16 share a single green with two hole locations.

Heading to the back side, the 10th hole is a short par-4 that also narrows a bit toward the green and has water to the right.

The 12th hole, a par-3 offers up a double green, where the 16th hole is also shot to. There is a large mound in the middle separating the two holes, making it a unique feature of the course.

The 13th hole is a scenic hole that offers up a difficult approach and water to the left.

The 14th hole is a par-5 that has a lot of room to the right, but to the left is easy to hit it over the fence and out of bounds. There

is a large green up at the hole.

Next is the longest par-3 on the course with a bunker in front of the green, and then there is the difficult driving hole, which is the par-4 16th. There are a pair of fairway bunkers blocking a straight drive, and there is water to the right as the fairway bends to the left. Despite it not being long, it is difficult.

The 17th is a short par-4 and definitely a birdie hole and is followed by a par-5 to finish, which can also be birdied. The main entrance and parking lot is on the left and can be hit, which

is also out of bounds. There is room to the right, but with the dogleg left, it makes it a much longer hole. The green is uphill and has sharp contours.

The more I think of the course, the more I like it. It is a fun course to play and not overly challenging. However, it does give you a good test on the green, especially when you hit the wrong places. The more you play the course though, the more you can probably avoid the hilly parts of the green.

As was the case with the other courses I reviewed, it was in

great shape, despite the lack of rain. The price point isn’t bad for it being in Naperville, but at $54 with a car during the week, it could probably be a few dollars cheaper. The main problem I had was that it was 90 degrees outside and there was no beverage cart. Maybe it was because it was in the morning, but there should be more access to fluids, whether it be more coolers or a beverage cart.

Tax do’s and dont’s explained at tax school

The Liberty Tax service is hosting a tax school open house 11 a.m. to 2. p.m. Each year the tax preparation company holds an eight to ten week class which will meet twice a week.

The open house will give more information regarding the class, see the IRS approved materials

and meet the instructors.

“To accommodate everyone’s schedules, we offer the classes in the morning and at night so people can choose which works best for them,” said Kandy Sladek, Liberty Tax Service owner.“Throughout the tax class we teach everything you would need to know to do an individual income tax return – including if you run a small business.”

Students need to be over 18 years old and have a high school education or a GED. The classes are free except for a small fee for books and materials.

“We do most everything open book so that our students learn how, and where to look for answers that they are not already sure of,” said Sladek. “As you know, our tax code changes quite often so we feel it’s better

for our students to know the resources that are available to them, rather than just trying to memorize everything.”

Students range from someone that would like to understand the tax codes better for their own return, to someone that would like to become (or already is) a professional tax preparer, according to Sladek.

Classes begin September 10.

Day time classes will be held 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays/ Wednesdays and on Tuesdays/ Thursdays. Night time classes are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays/ Wednesdays and on Tuesdays/ Thursdays.

Is clipping out coupons a waste of time today?

Dear Dave, Is it worth the time and effort to use coupons, or are they just a waste of time and a ploy to get you to buy things?

Tammy Dear Tammy, Coupons are definitely a ploy to entice you to buy something you may not have purchased otherwise. But that doesn’t mean they’re bad things. The practical and sensible application of coupons can definitely help you save money.

The main things to watch out for when using coupons are overbuying and spending your money on things you don’t really need. Seriously, you don’t need to hit Sam’s or Costco and walk out with nine gallons of mustard.

I’ve even heard of people buying things they know they don’t like just because it was on sale or they had a coupon. I mean, how dumb is that?

I guess there is a time factor involved in collecting coupons, especially if you still like to clip them from the newspapers or flyers that come in the mail.

Plenty of folks still do that every week. I think online coupons are a lot easier to search for and save though. There’s a company I love called eMeals that will work with you to plan recipes and also give you information on coupons and sales in your area to make the meals.

I’m definitely not anti-coupon, but at the same time couponing alone won’t change your family tree. It’s like any other tool. If used in a smart way, it can help you save money. And that’s not a

bad thing!

Ron Dear Ron, I think it depends on your financial situation along with

your plans and goals. If you’re at a place where you can’t afford necessities, then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using birthday money for food, diapers or clothes. That’s not a fun answer, but sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to properly care for your family.
