Hope’s Home Charity’s new name reflects expanded mission

When Downers Grove-based Walk-In Ministry of Hope was formed in 2000, its mission was to help less-fortunate individuals and families in the community find immediate assistance for an unexpected crisis.

Recently, however, the scope of the Walk-In Ministry has expanded, leading to a new mission and a new name.

Programs geared toward education and long-term assistance are now providing those needing help with the tools to overcome their problems, while also seeing them through immediate crisis.

“Many people know us as an organization that provides that immediate assistance, which obviously is a value to the people in the community,” said Janell Robinson, executive director of the Walk-In Ministry. “But, we also want to

really stress how some of the educational components will lead to long-term changes and solutions. We’ve implemented those in the last couple of years, and they complement the assistance that we offer to the community.”

This new emphasis on education and long-term assistance is one of the reasons

why the Walk-In Ministry’s leaders decided to shake things up and give the organization a new image. On Tuesday, July 30, the Walk-In Ministry’s officers held a special breakfast event to re-emphasize the changes within the organization and to See HOPE’S FRONT DOOR, page 4

Community garage sale to bring out bargain hunters

Everybody likes a finding a deal, and this weekend, bargain hunters can get their fill during Westmont’s annual community garage sale.

Dozens of homeowners across the village will fill their driveways with knickknacks, various media, used furniture and more Saturday and Sunday, as hundreds of consumers are expected to turn out for the chance to find hidden treasures.

Larry McIntyre, Westmont Special Events Corporation President, will be one of those shoppers looking for a deal.

McIntyre, a self-descried movie and music buff, said the yearly community garage sale gives him the opportunity to add to

his growing media collection.

“I absolutely love picking out CDs and DVDs at extremely reduced prices,” McIntyre said.

“When you can find CDs for a quarter, I’m dropping $10 and getting a ton of music out of the deal.”

The WSEC and the village of Westmont have been hosting the event since its inception in 1996.The community garage sale was initially one of over a dozen special events associated with Westmont’s 75th anniversary celebration. Like the Taste of Westmont, the garage sale was one of those special events that had staying power.

McIntyre also feels the event has been a success because it incorporates elements of green living, which have become trendy in recent years. By giving people the opportunity to reuse things that may otherwise be thrown away, McIntyre said the event is an “environmentally friendly activity.”

“The benefits are more than what they appear to be on the

surface,” he said. “Rather than throwing items that people don’t personally have use for away and ending up in a landfill, you now have the opportunity for that product to be reused.”

New in 2013 is an online signup form that McIntyre said will save a lot of WSEC staff hours, which were spent on registering participants in years past. The form can be found at www.westmont.illinois.gov/ CivicAler ts.aspx?AID=123.

By signing up for the event, participants can get a little free advertising, list their addresses, times and dates of their sale, and specific items being sold. Former executive of Downers Grove-based company pleads guilty to $3.9 million fraud scheme A former vice president of a company that was based in Downers Grove pleaded guilty on July 30 to a fraudulent invoicing scheme totaling $3.9 million.

Steven Brazile, 52, of St. Louis, obtained more than 100 company checks totaling more than $3.9 million and stole the money for himself, according to a U.S. States Attorney’s Office press release.

He was initially charged earlier this month in U.S. District Court and admitted the fraud at his arraignment.

Brazile was a vice president in the unnamed company’s St. Louis office where he managed the information technology functions in that office. He pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transportation of fraudulently obtained securities. He was released, pending sentencing, which U.S. District Judge Elaine Bucklo set for Nov. 13.

Brazile faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, although his plea agreement with the government anticipates an advisory federal sentencing guidelines range of 57 to 71 months in prison.

Brazile also agreed to restitution and forfeiture orders in the amount of $3,902,880, including

approximately $126,000 seized from Brazile’s bank accounts, an antique1959 Ford F100 pickup truck seized from Brazile, and $79,545 in proceeds from the sale of a 1965 Ford Tudor classic automobile.

Brazile, who had authority to approve company payments to vendors up to $100,000, admitted that between December 2006 and December 2009 he approved false invoices purporting to be from vendors for goods and services that were never provided to the corporation. He caused the company to issue approximately 104 checks totaling slightly more than $3.9 million.

Brazile took those checks and stole the proceeds by depositing them into a bank account he controlled. He then deposited the fraud proceeds into other accounts, including $250,000 placed into a brokerage account which he agreed to forfeit.

The guilty plea was announced

by Gary S. Shapiro, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Cory B. Nelson, Special Agent-inCharge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The government is being represented by Assistant U.S.Attorney Sarah E. Streicker.

Westmont presentation teaches strategies to survive encounter with violent person

The average active shooter situation is over in less than two minutes, but in those two minutes, dozens can be injured or killed, families can be devastated and communities scarred.

The Westmont Police Department and Sgt. Jim Schlicher will help teach people how best to survive these types of incidents during the presentation “Protecting Yourself Against A Violent Person.”

The presentation will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Village Hall. It will be the second time the village has addressed this topic since April.

Schlicher said a tremendous turnout for that first presentation and numerous follow up responses from residents are what inspired the second class.

“A lot of rounds can be fired in two minutes,” Schlicher said. “What I want to

help the audience remember is what they can do in that two minutes to keep safe.

If they are thinking about this situation, it will be in the back of their head that, ‘This is going to happen fast, and I have to remember what was taught to me back then.’”

The concept of run, hide, fight was first developed by the Department of Homeland Security to provide a blueprint of how best to survive an active shooter situation,and it will underscore Schlicher’s presentation. The DHS defines an active shooter as “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.”

Although rare, these tragedies seem to have been increasing, with the Sandy Hook and Aurora, Colo., incidents still fresh in many people’s minds.

Larry McIntyre, a spokesperson for the village of Westmont, said the recent frequency of these types of incidents prompted the village to take action.

“This is in response to some of the tragedies that have occurred over the years, but definitely in the last six months,” he said. “We’re just trying to give some awareness to residents so they can have some peace of mind and be thinking about what they can do to protect themselves in those situations.”

Schlicher, a 23-year veteran of the Westmont Police Department, said the key to surviving these tragedies is this type of preparation. And as the former school resource officer with Westmont High School, he feels this presentation coincides with the time of year when students are going off to college, an environment where many active shooter situations have occurred.

“We just want these students who are coming out of the Westmont area to know what to do if this happens in their classroom,” Schlicher said. jsamples@buglenewspapers.com

Lisle residents can register for new weather alerts The village of Lisle has upgraded its CodeRED Community Notification System to include CodeRED Weather Warnings.

This automated, severe weather notification system uses sophisticated technology to provide the fastest and most accurate severe weather warning available. Within moments after the National Weather Service issues a weather bulletin, the CodeRED Weather Warning System calls subscribers and delivers a prerecorded weather warning so quickly, it often arrives prior to any other public notification.

People can select the type of weather warnings they want to receive such as severe thunderstorms, flash floods or tornados. CodeRED Weather Warnings precisely target only subscribers in the anticipated path of storms, reducing false warnings. CodeRED Weather Warnings support other forms of weather notifications including television announcements and radio issued alerts.

There is no charge to register for this service.

Once registered for CodeRED notification and weather warnings, community members will be able to easily identify calls coming through their phones. A message recipient’s Caller ID will read “Emergency Communications Network or 866-419-5000” for CodeRED Notification calls.

For CodeRED Weather Warning calls, either “Emergency Communications Network or the number 800566-9780” will appear on Caller ID displays. It is encouraged that both telephone numbers are saved in citizen’s contacts on their cell phones for easy recognition.

The village recommends that all businesses register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, those who have changed their phone number or address within the past year and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

Robinson said the new name signifies the role that the WalkIn Ministry has played as a first step for people needing assistance, and that’s a role that Hope’s Front Door will continue to play.

“We are changing our name and really trying to clarify what we do,” Robinson said. “For some of our first-time clients, they’re kind of amazed we’re here.”

Finding long-term solutions In 2007, Pamela Williams had just gone through a tough divorce, and the ordeal put a financial strain on her family.

The 43-year-old single-mother of three was enrolled at Northern Illinois University at the time, and she wasn’t sure if she would be able to continue attending classes.

“I was searching the Internet, trying to find an organization that would help you with a gas card or some type of assistance for me to get back and forth from school,” Williams said.

“I needed to find someone in the area that could help assist

me, because I was struggling at the time. I came upon Walk-In Ministry.”

The Walk-In Ministry provided her with a gas card and helped her obtain medical services that she lost as a result of her divorce.

The Walk-In Ministry was formed 13 years ago by six local churches, the LOVE Christian, The Clearinghouse and members of the community, but Robinson said the organization is not geared toward any particular religion.

“We have a lot of different faiths who give to us and who donate their time,” she said.“We don’t push one faith’s teaching over another.”

When the Walk-In Ministry first started, its services focused on the immediate needs of residents in six villages: Darien, Downers Grove, Lisle, Westmont, Willowbrook and Woodridge. Aid in the form of food vouchers, transportation, car repair and lodging assisted people who were unemployed, underemployed, homeless, elderly or disabled. That part of the Ministry hasn’t changed.

“Really, the goal is to make sure these people don’t fall between the cracks,” Robinson said.

In the past three years, the Walk-In Ministry has developed an education component for each of the three major programs it offers.

A budget assistance program was started two and a half years ago to teach clients of Hope’s Front Door financial literacy and budget counseling.

Bankers from six local banks act as counselors for the program, helping clients set up a budget and answering questions about credit.

“The idea is to get them into the habit of saving, so that our clients can become their own Walk-In Ministry of Hope,” Robinson said.

After receiving immediate assistance, Williams enrolled in the budget assistance program and successfully finished the course. She said the experience helped her get back on track after her divorce and gave her the confidence to establish her own budgets.

“It boosted my self-esteem a little bit more and helped me figure my credit out,” Williams said. “That program really is wonderful.”

That confidence boost helped propel Williams to earn her master’s degree in criminal social justice.

In addition to the budget program, the organization also has a prescription advocacy program, which links clients with pharmaceutical companies offering prescription drug programs.The goal is to provide people needing medication with the ability to access those drugs for anywhere from three months to three years.

The PAP also links clients with local and national foundations that can provide them with information about managing specific diseases.

Hope’s Front Door is open 10 to 11:45 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Texas man gets 10 years for soliciting Dowers Grove minor A Texas man accused of possessing child pornography and having sexually explicit conversations with a 13 yearold Downers Grove girl he originally met over the Internet was sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced the sentence Aug. 1.

Rudolph Figueroa, 46, Corpus Christi, Tex., entered a plea of guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, a class 1 felony, and one count of solicitation to meet a child, a class 4 felony, in front of Judge Robert Kleeman, who handed down the sentence.

From March 2012 through June 2012, Figueroa exchanged text messages and spoke to his victim on several occasions, claiming to be a 17 year-old boy from Florida. On several occasions, Figueroa carried on sexually explicit conversations and texts with the girl knowing she was 13 years old.

Figueroa originally contacted his victim over the Internet after responding to YouTube videos she had posted. On at least one occasion, Figueroa asked to meet the girl in person without her parent’s

consent. Through the course of their investigation involving the 13 year-old girl, authorities discovered images of child pornography in Figueroa’s possession.

“In today’s world of instant and potentially anonymous communication, it is extremely important that parents teach their children how to be careful and alert to suspicious behavior when communicating over the internet through texts, emails and even telephone calls with people they have not met in person,” Berlin said. “Child sexual predators hide behind the anonymity that the Internet provides as they troll for their young victims. Someone who says they are a 15 year-old boy or girl may in reality be a child sexual predator looking for their next victim.

“I would like to thank the Downers Grove Police Department, particularly Detective Jeremy Thayer for their assistance and fine work in this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Ann Celine O’Hallaren for her ongoing work in combating those who would harm our children.”

Figueroa will be required to register as a lifetime sex offender.

Red Stars hoping new NWSL is successful

Women’s professional soccer in America has endured a changing landscape the past few years, but perhaps the National Women’s Soccer League will be the league that catches on and, hopefully, grows in popularity.

The Chicago Red Stars have been part of four different women’s professional leagues since the team was founded in 2009. Chicago Red Stars’ midfielder Julianne Sitch, a veteran pro player who’s experienced her share of change over the years, remains optimistic the NWSL can succeed.

“I think the future is going to be great,” said Sitch, an Oswego native who’s one of four players from Illinois on the 2013 Red Stars’ roster. “I think this is a great spot for a lot of players to develop, and it’s a great, competitive environment day in and day out. It’s great to develop players, especially players that are coming from college; they now have a place to go.”

Former Geneva High School and University of Illinois standout Jackie Santacaterina , who in 2005 helped lead Geneva to a third-place state finish in Class AA, shares Sitch’s sentiments.

“I think this league is definitely going to be the one that sustains us,” said Santacaterina, a defender chosen by the Red Stars in the fourth round (28th player taken overall) of the 2013 NWSL Supplemental Draft. “They’ve gone about it in different ways, and I think they’ve gone about it the right way this time. Hopefully it’ll work.

“It’s definitely not your standard professional league, because it first started (this year).

You have to overcome some different obstacles, so you have to kind of have to grind things

out. It’s a fun league to be a part of.”

Sitch, DePaul’s all-time leader in goals, assists and points, started her pro career playing for New Jersey-based Sky Blue FC in the inaugural season (2009) of the Women’s Professional Soccer league (WPS). She then signed with the Red Stars for the 2010 WPS campaign, and rejoined the team after it moved to the Women’s Premier Soccer League Elite (WPSL Elite) in 2012.

Sitch remained part of the Red Stars when the team joined the newly created eight-team NWSL. The league, in its first season, is operated by the United States Soccer Federation. The Canadian Soccer Association and Mexican Football Federation also are involved in the NWSL, and all three organizations provide the league with financial backing.

Having world-class players like Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe in town Saturday night certainly was the catalyst behind the Red Stars playing in front of a sellout crowd at Benedictine University.

“It was great,” Santacaterina said.“You grow up watching girls on the national team play, so just being on the same field playing with them, you get an adrenaline rush. We haven’t had this energy (at home) yet this season, and we’ve been waiting all season to kind of have this 12th person (the fans) and it was unreal.”

Sitch, however, hopes the Red Stars’ 3-1 victory over Solo and Rapinoe’s Seattle Reign FC club gives fans reason to make a return trip to BU and watch the Red Stars—who are still in the hunt for an NWSL playoff berth—based on their play.

“It’s great that people can come out here and watch women’s soccer, and that they can get to see (Megan) Rapinoe and Hope Solo in this kind of environment,” said Sitch, who

Benet, Lisle, Westmont grads compete at D-I level

A number of Benet, Lisle and Westmont high school products—as well as Lisle residents who graduated from high schools outside the Lisle area—made solid contributions to their respective NCAA Division I teams during the recently completed spring season.

BENET •John Callahan transferred to Northwestern from Santa Clara prior to the 2011-12 season. His best performance on the links took place at the Northwestern

Spring Invitational, where he shot a 73 on consecutive days.

•Eileen Carmignani ran in three events during the outdoor season for Valparaiso: the 800, 1,500 and the steeplechase. The sophomore’s times were among the top six recorded in each event for the Crusaders this spring.

•Kaileen Healy, a sophomore, was an 800 runner for Notre Dame. A sixth-place finish at the Spartan Invitational was among her top performances.

•Nick Moore, a sophomore infielder, saw action in 11 games for Missouri, starting one. He scored two runs and had one hit in eight at-bats.

•Katie Porada, a junior, ran

the anchor leg for the Illini’s distance medley relay team at the Big Ten Championships.

That team recorded the third fastest time in school history.

She also ran the fifth fastest time in the mile with a 4:43.24, and her time of 2:12.22 in the 800 was a team season best.

•Brian Roberts, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2011, but returned this spring and appeared in 18 games for Illinois. He went 3-4 with a 2.84 ERA, striking out 26 in 25 1/3 innings of work.

LISLE •Mackenzie Buchelt was an infielder for Valparaiso.

The former Lisle High School standout made just one appearance for the Crusaders this season as a pinch hitter.

However, she was part of the team’s postseason roster. The Crusaders advanced to the NCAA tournament and won a game in that tourney for the first time in school history.

•Derek Locascio, a Lisle resident, went to Missouri State as a senior transfer after attending John A. Logan College near Carbondale and Indianapolis University. He played in two baseball games this spring.

•Kelly McShea, who’s from Lisle, was a former all-state track and cross country runner

at St. Francis in Wheaton. She ran a personal best 800 time of 2:22.51 at the SIUE Cougar Invite earlier this spring while finishing second in that race for Illinois State.

•Jon Surber, pitched in six games (6 2/3 total innings) this season at Bradley.

WESTMONT Scott Dvorak, an Athletic Academic Achievement awardwinner at Michigan, turned in his best 800 race of the year at the UNC Joe Hilton Invitational with a second-place finish. He also took sixth at the Toledo Invitational. mike@buglenewspapers.com

Swartout wins IWO

During a week where the weather forecast called for rain nearly the entire tournament, the rain stayed away and the Phil Kosin Illinois Womens Open was a success at Mistwood Golf Course in Romeoville.

The rains halted the start of play on the final day by roughly one hour and came back during the two-hole playoff that was needed to decide the winner, but neither cloud burst had any impact on the outcome of the tournament.

Ann Arbor, Michigan native Elise Swartout defeated twotime champion Nicole Jeray on the second playoff hole, after Jeray sunk a long birdie putt on 18 to force the extra holes.

After both players shot par on the first playoff hole, Swartout hit a 58-degree wedge to within four feet of the cup on the second hole and sank the putt for the win.

It was the second-straight year a Michigan native has won the tournament.

“I had 82 yards to the pin down wind, so we wanted to land it around 78 and we ended up with a four-foot putt right into the hole,” she said. “It was probably the easiest putt I could have made at that green.”

For the tournament, Swartout carded a 213, shooting a 69 the final day, following a 71 in round one and a 73 on day two.

“My caddie and I talked about it and we thought it would take a 69 to win and he was right, it was a 69 to get in the playoff,” she said. “I knew it would take a good score to win, there were a lot of good players out there.”

There were good players, but the Western Michigan University alum played her best round when it counted.

“I was really solid,” Swartout said. “I stayed super patient and really grinded it out. It is a really tough golf course and if you get on certain sides of the

pin, it is hard to recover. Today, I really had it going. I felt really confident.”

In her third year as a professional, Swartout is on break from the Symetra Tour and is playing in state opens before heading to qualifying school at the end of the month.

The Illinois Womens Open is her first professional win.

“Everything has really been coming together except winning and this really feels great,” she said.

Swartout was impressed with Mistwood as a course and hopes to come back and defend her title.

“I really hope I will come defend, I plan to come back if my schedule allows,” she said.

“We walked up to this golf course and we were shocked. In the middle of Romeoville Illinois, this course really speaks for itself.

The greens were rolling so nicely, the fairways were in perfect condition and I couldn’t ask for it any better. It was phenomenal.

This was a really well-run state open, the competitors were really great.”

Locally, only one golfer from the Voyager Media coverage area made the cut.

That golfer was 15-year-old Bolingbrook native Jessica Yuen, who was one of only 11 amateurs to make the 34-player cut as well as the youngest player to be playing on the final day.

Yuen carded an even-par 72 in the final round to finish 20th in the tournament.

“I was pretty happy with the 72,” she said. “I think this is my lowest here. I got a lot of help from my caddie Ricky Costello.

He is a friend of mine and he takes lessons (at Mistwood) in the same program with me.”

To make the cut, she fired a 74 the first round and a 78 the second.

“The first day, I was making putts and the second day, I wanted to shoot better than 74, but it got away from,” said Yuen, an incoming sophomore

at Neuqua Valley High School.

“The greens were tough.”

Yuen said she never got nervous playing in a field of professional golfers or women 30-plus years her senior.

“I wasn’t coming in thinking, ‘I’m playing with pros,” she said.

“I just wanted to play my best since I was the youngest. I just wanted to play my game and not worry about it. I play with people my age in California that are a lot better than me and a lot stronger, so I just worry about my game shoot the best score I can.”

Several other local golfers competed in the tournament, but failed to make the cut.

Plainfield resident Brittany Johnston missed the cut, shooting a 17-over-par 161 through the first two days of the tournament.

On the second day of the open, Johnston played with Minooka graduate Mallory Carr, who shot a plus-20, 164.

Woodridge resident and Downers Grove South alum Tiffany Boak shot a 171 (27 over par). She fired an 85 the first day and an 86 the second.

Krystal Garritson, a Lockport native and incoming sophomore on the University of St. Francis golf team, carded a 31-over 175.

After day one, she looked to be in contention to make the cut after an 80 (41-39), but a 95 on day two eliminated her from the tournament.

Tied with Garritson at 31 over was Park Ridge’s Rachel Oberheide. She also carded a 175 by shooting an 87 round one and an 88 round two.

Downers Grove resident Liz Schwartzers shot a 55-over-par 199 in her two days of play, carding a 100 day one and a 99 day two.

Minooka High School graduate Rachel Herzberger carded a plus-60 204 for the tournament, with a 104 day one and a 100 day two.

GolF Course reView Mark Gregory/Bugle Staff

The par-3 12th hole at Blackberry Oaks is played over water.

Blackberry short but challenging Bristol gem offers up a variety of holes

I have been to Blackberry Oaks in Bristol several times.

However, all of the times I was there was to cover high school golf.

I had never seen the whole course or played the course.

That changed last week when Mark Gregory and I reviewed the course.

Blackberry Oaks is tucked away in the small town of Bristol, pretty much between Oswego and Yorkville off of Route 34.

The course plays relatively short at just 6,003 yards from the white tees and 6,404 from the blue. The front nine is particularly short as it plays 2,900 from the white and 3,140 from the blue.

Just because it is short doesn’t mean that it is challenging.

Several bunkers, fescue and water or out of bounds on nearly every hole makes it quite the challenge.

If you were a strong iron player, you might not need to use a driver much of the day.

The course opens with a short dogleg left par-4 with water to the right of the fairway. The second hole is a manageable par5 but has bunkers surrounding the green.

After a short par-4 with water to both sides of the fairway, the fourth hole is a medium length par-3 with water in front and to the right of the green.

A unique par-4 fifth hole follows. It is a dogleg left with a pond and a large bunker blocking a bold attempt to clear the dogleg. An accurate long drive over the water can get you right in front of the green, but it may not be worth the price.

The sixth hole also makes you

think off the tee.At just 317 from the blue and 304 from the white, it is reachable for the long drivers.

However, you have to clear water and there are bunkers around the green. I managed to hit my drive hole high, but still made bogey with a narrow green to work with and a slope at the front left of the green.

A straightforward par-5 is followed by a longer par-3 with water to the right and a closing hole with a creek in front of the tee box and to the right of the fairway, as long as in front of the green.

While the back nine played a little longer, it seemed to be a little more open. It opened with a straightaway par-4 with water to the right. That is followed by a dogleg right par-5 that is the longest hole on the course. If you hit it too straight, you could end up in a backyard.

The 12th hole was my favorite hole, a par-3 over water. That is

followed by a pair of straightaway par-4s that are next to each other.

That is followed by the final par3, with barkers and water to the left and trees to the right.

The course finishes with a manageable par-3 and a pair of par-4s. The eighth hole is a dogleg right with water to the right, while the 18th hole is one of the most unique holes I have seen.

It plays at 378 yards in length, but it is in the shape of an upside down L. So, a short drive into the fairway and you can choose to play over water and trees to the green. Or you can continue to follow the fairway around the challenges until you get to the green. It will take a long drive to bypass the trees and have a clear shot to the green.

Overall I really enjoyed this course. There were a lot of different and unique holes, such as the final hole. Some holes made you think out a strategy,

while other holes let you grip it and rip it.

I was trying to come up with a critique of the course and I had a hard time finding one.The cost for a weekday round with a cart is $57, which, compared to other courses in the area, is a fair price.

It isn’t one of those courses that wows you with its greenness like an Arrowhead, but it was still in good shape and played pretty fast.

This would be a course I would definitely recommend to play at least once a year. It would be a great course to play twice a year to see how you adjust to the different holes.

Kahne tames the tricky triangle Taking advantage of a caution, Kasey Kahne buried his car into Turn 1 with two laps left and grabbed a win from Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon in Sunday’s GoBowling. com NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway.

Kahne picked up his second victory of the season–all but assuring a berth in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup–his second at Pocono and the 16th of his career.

Gordon ran second, 1.392 seconds behind, followed by Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Penske Racing teammates Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano ran sixth and seventh, with Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle completing the top 10.

Kahne gained one position to eighth in the Cup standings, but,

more than anything, the second victory gives him a substantial degree of comfort where the Chase is concerned, given that no driver in contention for a wild card spot currently has more than one win.

Kahne made the winning pass to the outside of Gordon through Turn 1 and cleared his teammate near the entry to the Tunnel Turn at the 2.5-mile triangular track.

“On that final restart, I spun my tires a little bit and he (Gordon) got a great jump, and Kurt pushed me all the way to Turn 1, which really helped,” Kahne said. “I had one opportunity to either go for it and make it work or not. As good as our (car) was all day long, I thought we could make that work on the outside.

“I just needed to clear him, and when we got to Turn 2, I was able to do that. It was a great race.

We had a really fast car. (Crew chief) Kenny (Francis) called an awesome race, and the whole pit crew did a perfect job… We needed this one to get in the Chase—we were able to get it, and it feels really good.”

Gordon was the epitome of mixed emotions after the race.

The second-place finish elevated him to ninth in the standings, but Gordon is still winless this season and therefore in danger of missing

the Chase if he has serious trouble in any of the five races remaining before the Chase field is set at Richmond.

Gordon also acknowledged ruefully that Kahne simply outdrove him after the final restart.

“I got a perfect restart on that last one, probably jumped him a little bit,” Gordon said. “And I got in front of him, and it looked like I needed to block the inside, so I

kind of protected the inside, and he blasted up around the outside and outdrove me through (Turn) 1.

“I’m disappointed that we didn’t get this win… I’m a little disappointed, but I’m also excited because it was a good points day for us.”

Pole winner Jimmie Johnson was one of the speed horses in the field, but the series leader blew a right front tire on Lap 76.

Make verbal abuser accountable through email Q. I have a coworker who is constantly verbally abusive.

He calls me names, yells and puts my work down. I have to work with this guy a lot, and I’m ending up calling in sick just to avoid him. When I go to my boss, she just tells me to work harder at “getting along,” like it is my fault. I like my job but can’t tolerate my coworker. What can I do?

A. What you can do is switch communication modes to make it impossible for your coworker to keep beating you up verbally.

Send your coworker an email and tell him you need more detail than you can get in conversation. Let him know in the email that you need all

future communication to come in an email form.

If he corners you and tries to talk to you, calmly walk away. Don’t engage him, do not defend yourself, and don’t try verbally negotiating.

You will just re-open the door for more abuse.

When your coworker sees that the only way he can access you is email, he will have an interesting dilemma. If he speaks in the email to you the way he speaks to you verbally, you will have a tidy paper trail of his behavior.

You can now take his emails to your boss and ask for coaching on responding to his abusive emails.

Unfortunately, when two

people appear to be fighting on the job, most managers figure it takes two to tango.

Both people will end up carrying responsibility for the conflict. Managers rarely have advance interpersonal skills in negotiating and mostly just hope the conflict will go away.

Your manager is telling you to work harder at getting along because she probably doesn’t know many conflict resolution tools. She hopes if she keeps shoving you back into discussions with this guy, you’ll fix the issue so she doesn’t have to get involved.

Most of the time when there is a workplace conflict, the truth is that both parties really are contributing to the problem. If either party changes behavior, the conflict dies from lack of participation. In your case, it

sounds like your coworker truly is abusive.Your contribution in this case is that you keep engaging him in a conversation.

When we face a workplace problem, the best way to solve it is to figure out the result we need. In your case, the result is exchanging data on projects.The next question to ask yourself is how to get your outcome without going through the same process. In your case, it is to diplomatically avoid verbal conversations and switch to email.

As Einstein once observed, doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results is insanity. Be willing to change your part of the dance, and watch your coworker have to change his tune.

Not having 20 percent home down payment a nasty option Dear Dave, When is it okay to purchase a house without making a 20 percent down payment?

Hannah Dear Hannah, When you’re willing to pay private mortgage insurance (PMI). And that’s not something you want to do.

PMI costs about $75 a month per $100,000 borrowed. So, if you borrow $200,000 on a home, and you don’t put down at least 20 percent on the transaction, you’ll have to pay out an extra $150 a month as part of your mortgage payment.

Private mortgage insurance does nothing for you except pay your mortgage company in the event they have to foreclose on you and they lose money.

PMI is foreclosure insurance that protects the lender, and you get to pay for it if you don’t make a 20 percent down payment.

In the scenario I mentioned before, that would be an additional $1,800 a year on a $200,000 loan. In a sense, that’s an extra 0.9 percent on your interest rate. That’s what it feels like.

So you can see that PMI is not a positive thing. Often, a first-time homebuyer will purchase a house with 10 percent down then pay the other 10 percent as quickly as possible in order to get rid of the PMI. Stay away from it, Hannah. It’s nasty stuff!

Telling your friend the truth Dear Dave, I have a close friend whose 17-year-old daughter is going to college to become a high-school band director. Her daughter wants to take out student loans to attend an expensive private school, and tuition alone over four years will cost $100,000. I feel this is a really bad idea, but I don’t know how to talk to her about this.

Natalie Dear Natalie, I’m sure your friend and her family are nice people. But what we’ve got here is a little teenage girl who has her heart set on something, and no one has told her no in a while. You’re getting ready to help introduce a new word into her vocabulary, because what you’ve described to me is stupid.

Listen, I love high school band directors.

It just doesn’t make sense to spend over $100,000 on a degree to become one.

Most of them make about $30,000 a year, so the return on investment for this kind of thing is terrible. It doesn’t matter if you’re a band director, English teacher or a doughnut shop owner, you need to figure out what you’re going to make versus what you spend to get there.

Make sure you talk to your friend

directly, not her daughter. If you do that, you’ll end up branded as mom’s mean friend. Use your relationship and history together to help her see this is a train wreck waiting to happen. My suggestion would be for her daughter to live at home, work, and attend a community college for a couple of years.Then, when she transfers to a four-year school, make sure it’s a state institution and she keeps working.

The trick is to kindly and gently maintain enough influence to guide these two weak people away from a horrible decision. At the same time, you’ve got to be strong enough to call mom out for not stepping up and providing proper guidance. Mommies who don’t try to stop their babies from doing things this dumb are known as bad mommies.

People who spend $100,000 to $150,000 to make the kind of money that’s waiting on her daughter are either young and inexperienced, or they’re what are known as fools.

I’m sure you’ll find a nice way to say it, but basically your friend needs to grow a backbone and tell her daughter no.

Summer food tips to keep you safe

Whether you’re spending a day at the lake, the beach, a local park, or in your own back yard, food is sure to be part of your special day. And whenever you cook and/or serve food outdoors, keep food safety in mind.

A little planning and the right tools will help make sure no one ends up with a bellyache or worse, food poisoning.

Here are the basics: 1. Keep everything clean. That includes your hands, knives, cutting boards, eating utensils and preparing and cooking surfaces.

Soap and water is the best method of cleaning, but if it’s not convenient, use prepackaged sanitizing towels or make up a small bucket of diluted bleach solution (2 oz. bleach to 1 gallon water) to wipe up spills or cleaning surfaces.

Make sure your hands are clean. Scrub with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If washing your hands isn’t practical outdoors, use hand sanitizer each time you handle raw meat, poultry or fish.

2. Avoid cross contamination. Separate meat, poultry and fish. Package raw items in plastic bags or sealed containers so spilled juices don’t contaminate other foods.

while it was raw. Use a clean serving dish for food taken from the grill.

Use separate cutting boards and knives for different foods. Pork and beef may be cut on the same surface, but use another for chicken and one more for fish. Using pre-sliced breads, cheese or vegetables to eliminate the need for additional knives and cutting boards.

3. Make sure foods are thawed correctly.

The best method to fend off bacteria is to thaw food in the refrigerator. Make sure that juices from thawing food don’t

drip onto other items. Some food may be defrosted in the microwave or under running cold water. Never thaw food at room temperature, except breads or desserts that are recommended to defrost at room temperature.

4. Make sure food is cooked thoroughly to kill bacteria. Use a probe thermometer to check the internal temperature of grilled meat or chicken for doneness.

Beef, lamb or veal should be no less than 145 degrees F for medium rare. Chicken or turkey pieces are done at 170 degrees

F, and 180 degrees F for duck. Most prepared foods should reach 165 degrees F to be safe. Cook in small batches and serve immediately.

Food that’s ready to eat needs to be kept hot or cold, as appropriate for each dish. Hold cold food at less than 40 degrees F and hot food above 140 degrees F. Any temperature between 40 and 140 degrees F is in the danger zone, ideal for bacteria growth.

5. If in doubt, don’t eat it. Condiments such as ketchup, mustard and pickles don’t require careful temperature monitoring during use but should be refrigerated to extend product life.

Bread, rolls and cakes usually are OK at room temperature any time. If something doesn’t smell or look right to you, or you think it may have been sitting out too long, toss it.

In truth, these tips are applicable any day of the year, but it’s easy to get in a rush and cut corners when there are lots of people lining up to eat.Take your time, plan ahead and enjoy.

Find underlying cause of runny nose

DEAR MAYO CLINIC: I’m an 85-year-old man who’s had a postnasal drip problem since childhood. Years ago, after many tests, I was diagnosed with nonallergic rhinitis. I’ve tried pills and sprays to help the symptoms, but nothing works very well. I feel as though I’m constantly blowing my nose and often clearing my throat. Do you have any suggestions that will allow me to go more than an hour with some relief?

ANSWER: The problems of a chronic runny nose and postnasal drip - excess nasal drainage that runs down the back of your throat - can be challenging to effectively manage.

Although they may not seem to be major medical problems, these symptoms can have a big impact on a person’s quality of life. Successful treatment often

depends on identifying their underlying cause.

Even though your symptoms have appeared to be the same for many years, it’s possible that the source of those symptoms actually may have changed over time. The potential causes of a chronic runny nose and postnasal drainage can vary as people age.

In younger people,for example, a chronic runny nose, along with other symptoms such as congestion or sneezing,could be a symptom of allergies, a condition called allergic rhinitis. Or, as you mention, it is sometimes linked to nonallergic rhinitis. Nonallergic rhinitis can be due to different causes like irritation from smoke or vasomotor rhinitis, which is hypersensitivity of the lining of the nose to odors, temperature or barometric changes. There’s also a condition called nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia, which causes symptoms similar to

those of allergic rhinitis, but no triggering allergen can be found.

A runny nose with considerable postnasal drainage could be linked to chronic sinusitis. In this common condition, the cavities around nasal passages, called sinuses, become inflamed and swollen.

Some people with chronic sinusitis also have sinus polyps that may make the problem worse. A runny nose that seems to affect one side of the nose more than the other side could signal an anatomical problem, such as a spinal fluid leak. When symptoms include obstruction to air flow, other conditions, such as a deviated nasal septum, need to be considered.

All of these causes of chronic runny nose and postnasal drainage may occur in older people, but several additional disorders can cause these symptoms to become more

frequent with age.

For example, gustatory rhinitis is more common in older populations. Symptoms of this type of nonallergic rhinitis may be triggered by eating any food, and is an exaggeration of the runny nose we all get when we eat spicy food. It’s also more common for minor temperature changes to induce a runny nose in older adults.

In many older people, the sensation of postnasal drainage may be the result of nasal airway dehydration. This can be a side effect of medications for high blood pressure, sleep disorders and bladder problems, among others. Drinking too much coffee, tea or alcohol, or not drinking enough water is also more likely to produce nasal dehydration in older adults. Finally, in some people, symptoms of certain kinds of gastroesophageal reflux may be mistakenly identified as

postnasal drainage.

Effective treatments are available for many of these conditions. Finding the best treatment, however, hinges on correctly pinpointing the underlying problem.

Because it has been some time since you were originally diagnosed with nonallergic rhinitis, it may be helpful to have your condition re-evaluated now.

Consider making an appointment with a physician who specializes in ear, nose and throat disorders (otorhinolaryngologist) or an allergist with a particular interest in disorders of the nose and sinuses.
