Rotary GroveFest attracts thousands with variety of attractions, entertainment

Planning a summer fest of this size takes some time, and Downers Grove rotary club chairwoman lisa rasin said the club began the planning phases of this year’s fest shortly after last year’s concluded. story continues on page 15

Expression Dance Studio to stay in Westmont Board approves special use permit for new, expanded location

In a move that was met with a round of applause from attendees at last week’s Westmont Village Board meeting, trustees voted to approve an ordinance that will keep Expression Dance Studio in the village.

After an unsuccessful attempt to move the studio from its current location at 21 W. Quincy to a location south of the railroad tracks on Cass Avenue, studio owner Amber Alonzo has been given the go ahead to move to a new, expanded space

at 25 S. Cass Ave. In the spring of 2014, Alonzo requested a special use permit to move to a location at 29 S. Cass, but the village had concerns about parking availability, building access and the proximity of the student pick-up/drop-off location to the railroad tracks. At that time, Alonzo decided to stay in the current location.

The owner of the dance studio had been seeking a new location because Expression had outgrown its current space and was renting space from the Westmont Park District for classes. However, the new space will allow all classes to be held at the Westmont location.

Village staff worked with Alonzo to find a more suitable location, and Alonzo made a request in March for a special use permit for the space at 25 S. Cass, which has a private

Jill Ziegler, community development director, said the new location has sufficient parking for the proposed use. Additionally, as part of the special use ordinance, Expression will be required to add soundproofing during the buildout, as well as stripe and maintain the parking lot. Commuter parking will not be allowed in the lot.

Several residents, students and parents turned out to support Alonzo at the board’s June 25 meeting.

Heather Kostal, who is the owner of No Corner Suns Art Studio, said the Alonzo family has been very supportive of the Westmont community and it would be great to have them housed in the new space.

Resident Sara Cunningham, who along with her daughter takes classes at Expression, agreed that the studio needed to stay in Westmont.

“We’ve seen restaurants and nail salons come and go here,” she said.

“This studio needs a home to stay in Westmont where it belongs.”

Trustee Marie Johanik-Guzzo said it appeared that a lot of effort was put into making sure the new location would be the best

fit. However, she asked whether Alonzo planned on having large performances at the new site, which could create parking issues.

Alonzo told Johanik-Guzzo that large performances are typically done off-site.

“We always rent outside space for larger performances, but we will have small camp performances onsite,” she said.

Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter, who also is the director of the Westmont Park District, said the new space is a much better location for Expression.

“Our staff worked hard to find a spot,” he said. “This is a good partner to have in the community, and we want you to stay.”

Alonzo said she hopes the new space will be ready by Sept. 1, which would be in time for the fall dance sessions.

Westmont readies for Independence Day celebration

The Westmont Village Board approved the necessary permit and licensing steps for the village’s Independence Day celebration at Ty Warner Park on July 4.

The board approved the amplified sound permit, the special event liquor license and the event’s traffic plan at their June 25 meeting.

The event, which was first held in 2000 to coincide with the opening of Ty Warner Park, is held annually on July 4.

“We are very proud of our spectacular fireworks display,” said Larry McIntyre, communications director for Westmont. “People who attend say our display is the best in the Chicagoland area.”

A special traffic plan for the event, which includes street closures and various one-ways from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., or until the public has dispersed after the event, will be in

effect on that day. “We ask drivers to pay attention to the signage around the area,” said McIntyre.

“There will be plenty of police and Emergency Management staff out directing people in regard to the traffic changes.”

In addition to the fireworks display, the event will include live music, food vendors, children’s entertainment and a petting zoo.

The park district will sell beer and wine from 3 to 10 p.m.

BoarD approves teXt amenDment changes The Westmont Village Board approved text amendments to the Special Use zoning code approval as well as the policy for

intersection solicitations by notfor-profit organizations at its June 25 meeting.

The proposed change to the Special Use text, according to the village’s Community Development Director Jill Ziegler, will allow administrative approval of certain businesses in B-1 and B-2 districts that would typically require special uses provided they are less than 1,000 square feet. The purpose is to make the process more efficient, friendly to small businesses and allow for time and money savings.

“These businesses would still need development permits so the board will still have an opportunity to approve the business,” said Ziegler.

Additionally, the board approved

a text amendment to update to the existing village code that allows the village to limit the number of times an organization can solicit for contributions at intersections to one time per year.

“We already have a policy that regulates who can apply, and by practice, we have limited it to one time per year,” said Village Manager Stephen May. “This language just codifies what we’ve been doing.”

Mayor Ron Gunter questioned whether there could be special situations where the village could grant an organization the opportunity to solicit more than once and May indicated that situation would just require a special request of the board.

village recognized for new building, fire codes

The International Code Council for Building and Fire Codes recognized the village of Westmont for recently adopting new building and fire codes.

Westmont Director of the Fire Prevention Division, Larry Kaufman, accepted the award for the village at the National Fire Protection Association’s

annual conference last month at McCormick Place.

The village was recognized for passing and adopting new building and fire codes last January. The new codes replaced codes from 2001 and now include a residential sprinkler code for all new single-family homes built in the village.

Fire Chief David Weiss presented the award to Mayor Ron Gunter at the village’s board meeting on June 25.

Two residents of the Mayslake Village senior living community suffered minor injuries during a weekend fire at the complex.

The Westmont Fire Department responded to an activated fire alarm at Mayslake Village, 1727 35th St., at approximately 4:45 p.m.

Sunday. Firefighters discovered heavy smoke and fire coming from a first-floor apartment and upgraded the call to a working fire

response, according to a release from the village.

“This is another example in which our early detection fire alarm systems allowed us to respond quickly and save lives,” Westmont Fire Chief David Weiss said.

The alarm was then upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm after smoke was reported on all five floors of the complex and residents reported being trapped inside.

Neighboring communities offered additional assistance, with the first-arriving crews immediately deploying hose lines

to extinguish the fire. Additional fire crews evacuated residents to a safe area outside the building. The fire was under control within 20 minutes.

Two residents were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for minor injuries.

“As always, I want to commend our entire emergency response team and crews assisting from surrounding communities for their fast and professional response,” Weiss added.

The department said it is still investigating the cause of the fire.

The word dominant is often thrown around too much in the world of sports.

However,whenitcomestoDowners Grove South’s Caroline Hedgecock, it may be an understatement.

Thejuniorlostonlyonegameonthe pitching rubber this season, winning 15. Her lone loss was a 5-4 defeat in the IHSA Class 3A Supersectional to eventual state champion Marist.

On the season, she posted a 1.12 ERA with 136 strikeouts in 94 innings At the plate, Hegecock batted .543, posting 57 hits in 105 at bats. She scored 45 runs, had 14 doubles, 5 triples, 10 home runs and she drove in a school-record 68 runs.

For her success, she is the 2015 Voyager Media Softball Player of the Year.

“She had a wonderful year for us, not only pitching, but also hitting.

She hit third in our lineup and was instrumental to our offense,” said South coach Ron Havelka. “When she was on, not many teams could hit her very well, in fact there were many games where the ball was never even hit out of the infield.”

Hedgecock, a University of Maryland commit, had a rare ability to separate her mental game in the circle and still focus at the plate.

“There wasn’t really one thing,” she said. “I focus a lot on pitching and hitting is extra for me, but when they

both are working, it’s a blast for me.”

She credits her RBI record this year to those hitting ahead of her in the lineup.

“Our first two batters put up amazing numbers this season and were almost always on,” she said.

“Hitting is contagious and that really helped.”

The rest of the all-area members are:

steph aBello The senior catcher leaves Benet as owner of the IHSA’s all-time record for career home runs (60) and is the career school record-holder for RBI with 211. This season, the University of Illinois recruit slugged 13 homers and had 44 RBI to go along with a .379 average.

“As powerful of a hitter Steph is, she is possibly a better defensive catcher,” said Benet coach Jerry Schilf. “Over the past two years she picked off 22 runners and only allowed four stolen bases.”

Jen ames Joliet West senior second baseman batted .435, with 13 home runs, 30 RBI, 32 runs scored with an on base percentage of .474. Ames struck out only nine times in 108 at bats.

payton Buresch The sophomore right-hander combined with Carolyn Hedgcock to give Downers South perhaps the best one-two pitching duo in the state.

Buresch’s stellar numbers included

an 18-1 record, a 1.36 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 108 innings. She went undefeated as a freshman last season (15-0).

“It’s really nice to have two pitchers that are that good,” said Havelka.

“There was a stretch of time (this season) where Caroline had slight injury and it kept her out. Payton took over for us for a good week (on the mound) and did really, really well.

Next year I think the sky’s the limit for her; she’s just going to get better.”

maya caBallero The senior All-CSL South pitcher and outfielder “really came into her own this year,” said Niles West coach Nicole Reynolds. She was the Wolves’ No. 1 pitcher (10 victories in 2015) but also was one of the club’s leading hitters with a .420 average and six homers.

alyssa callans She helped carry JCA to a regional title, both with the bat and her right arm.

On the season, she batted .386 with a .466 OBS and a .632 slugging percentage. She had 26 RBI, 44 hits, five home runs and scored 31 runs.

In the circle, she posted a 17-8 record with a 2.18 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP. She had 174 strikeouts and only 38 walks.

Maria Connell The sophomore catcher from Plainfield Central batted .403 with 33 RBI, four homer and 12 doubles. She added a .974 fielding average.

Brooklyn Daly Daly, a sophomore from Plainfield Central, picked up her second regional title win on the mound this year. She went 26-4 on the mound with a 1.75 ERA and 186 strikeouts.

At the plate she hit .385 with 15 RBI, eight doubles and a pair of homers.

Gretchen Egly Plainfield Central senior hit .378 with 10 home runs, 33 RBI and 10 doubles.

There wasn’t an easy out in Downers South’s lineup this season, and the junior outfielder-infielder was chief among them. Lea, a junior, hit .574 and totaled 81 hits—a new single-season school record, eclipsing the old mark of 72 set by University of Wisconsin star Marissa Mersch in 2012. In addition, her 28 doubles tied her for the most two-base hits in a single season in IHSA history, and she was second on the team in RBI with 59 while hitting in the No. 2 spot.

“She came up with huge hits,” said Havelka. “She was very instrumental in our success. She was good last year as a sophomore, but she got stronger and is a very aggressive hitter and hits the ball hard.”

The Plainfield East sophomore hit .398 with 47 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, four homers, 25 RBI and scored 33 times.

The junior’s switch to shortstop from third base this season was flawless, as was her production at bat for Downers South. One of three Mustang batters to hit over .500 this season (.526), LoBianco slugged eight homers (second on the team) and drove in 57 runs.

“She had a lot of key RBI for us,” said Havelka. “She worked hard in the offseason and became stronger.

Morgan Krieger Plainfield North senior batted .424 with six homers and 31 RBI. Was a three-year varsity starter and is continuing her career at St. Ambrose University.

Bolingbrook senior dominated on the mound to the tune of a 12-8 record with a .66 ERA in 137 innings pitched and broke the 200 strikeout mark in the playoffs. She will play next season at Western Illinois University.

Katie Polaski Polaski is a leadoff, left-handed slap hitter who took over that role last season as a freshman for Downers North. The second baseman, who’s verbally committed to Loyola, continued to improve during her sophomore campaign this spring, hitting .452 with a .587 on-base percentage.

“She got on base a lot more,” said DGN coach Eric Landschoot. “She knows when to bunt and has the ability to hit a line drive through the infield. Katie is going to continue to get better and will continue to set pace for us at the start of the game.”

Courtney Richardson A Voyager Media all-area team member for the second straight year, Richardson last summer verbally committed to Michigan after

previously committing to Illinois. The senior captain hit .448 this season with 32 RBI for Maine South, which won 20 games this season.

Kiley Robb Sophomore pitcher from Joliet West went 15-7 on the season with a 2.2 ERA. At the plate, she batted .387, with three home runs, 17 RBI and 25 runs scored.

Alysia Rodriguez Senior shortstop for Joliet West batted .449, with 13 home runs, 29 RBI, 29 runs scored, and a .495 OBP.

Michaela Schlattman Plainfield Central senior shortstop and four-year starter and regional title-winner batted .439 on the season with 44 runs and 26 RBI. She hit six home runs to go along with four triples, 13 doubles and stole 15 bases.

She will be continuing her career at the University of Miami-Ohio.

Mikey Sinnot A junior from Plainfield East, Sinnot batted .427 with 47 hits, 13 doubles, three triples, four homers, 28 RBI and scored 32 runs.

Jagiello progressing in Yanks’ farm system By mike sandrolini sports reporter

Eric Jagielo is currently in his second full season with the New York Yankees’ organization, but the former Downers North star got a scare last fall that would give any batter pause for concern.

The left-handed hitting third baseman was hit in the face by a pitch from a left-handed pitcher during an instructional league game. The pitch broke the zygomatic arch near his left eye, requiring surgery. The injury and surgery caused him to miss the entire season at the Arizona Fall League.

Jagielo had planned to play in the Arizona Fall League to make up for some playing time and at-bats he missed last summer while a member of the Yankees’ Class A-Advanced Florida State League club in Tampa.

There, he was out over a month after he strained his oblique.

A former Big East Player of the Year at Notre Dame, Jagielo said he’s completely healthy and is experiencing no ill-effects, physically or otherwise, in the aftermath of getting beaned.

“From a recovery standpoint, everything is healed,” Jagielo said “I didn’t think really much of it.”

When he stepped into the batter’s box against a lefty for the first time since getting beaned, Jagielo said there was “a little bit of a flashback” to that incident, but he added, “There’s no side-effects from it as far as getting into the batter’s box.”

Jagielo played in 85 games at Tampa last year, and put together a nice season despite the oblique injury, hitting .259 with 16 homers and 54 RBI. “I took a lot from that season,” he said. “I didn’t get to play as many games as I wanted to, but I knew with injury I had, I had to get it fully recovered. I wanted to get back and be a part of that team again.”

During spring training this season, Yankees senior vice president of baseball operations Gary Denbo brought Scott Rolen, a former all-star third baseman, into camp to work with Jagielo defensively. Jagielo said he did pick up some pointers from the eight-time Gold Glove winner.

“I took a lot from him,” Jagielo said. “He’s very knowledgeable at the position and he really helped me so it was a good experience. I’ll never be Scott Rolen but you learn as much as you can and mesh what I can do and what he taught me. It’s always game of adjustments.”

A website that covers the Yankees, called Pinstripealley.com, expressed concern over Jagielo’s defense, pointing out that he had committed 17 errors in 68 games. Jagielo, however, said he doesn’t really pay attention to what’s been said or written in the media.

“I know the communication between me and the (Yankees) staff and everybody has something to work on,” he said. “Nobody in game of baseball is perfect and nobody is the perfect player. My main goal is to become best you can be.”

Jagielo did get the opportunity to be in the Yankees’ major league spring training camp and played alongside Yankee regulars for a few games.

“It was a cool experience and neat to watch them go about their business,” Jagielo said. “They’re all good guys.”

The Yankees assigned Jagielo to their Class AA affiliate in Trenton, where he’s been hitting cleanup for the Thunder. He was put on the seven-day DL in June after bruising his knee scoring on a sacrifice fly, but he is expected to return to the lineup.

Prior to going on the DL, Jagielo was second on the team in both home runs (nine) and RBI (35) and tied for second with a .284 average. His nine round-trippers tied him for fifth in the Eastern League. However, Jagielo said he doesn’t really have any personal or statistical goals for 2015.

“Just try to get better and be a complete player and win a championship at this level,” he said. “That’s pretty much a main goal of all of ours and try to win a championship; that would be great. I don’t set numerical standards.”

Jagielo describes life in the minor leagues as being “a little different.”

He lives in an apartment, and when he has a home game, he usually arrives at the ballpark at 2 p.m. and generally wraps up at 10:30. When the Thunder is one the road, they travel exclusively by bus.

I’ve got a good support system,” he said. “My family comes out to games and some of my friends have.”

The par-5 second hole is another reachable hole in two if you can carry the bunker off the drive and hit the tight fairway. There is water to the left of the green and bunkers to the right.

That leads up to a steep uphill par-3 third hole, where taking two more clubs for the distance is needed.

The fourth hole has a tree in the fairway, making you choose a tight right path or a more forgiving left path. However, going left leads to a tougher angle on the approach shot to the green.

The fifth hole is a par-4 that features a tight green to hit. A short sixth hole follows, where you may get greedy and go for the green. That can lead to a much tougher second shot as there is rough between the fairway and green, which plays uphill over a bunker, making that shot blind.

A par-3 with a large bunker makes

up the seventh hole and a tight driving hole surrounded by trees makes up the eighth hole. The ninth hole is a long par-4 that has a very tight portion of the fairway, making you want to keep your drive in front of it.

All in all, this was definitely one of my favorite courses I’ve played. As mentioned earlier, it is difficult but fair. There are good shots to be made and chances to take. However, the big difficulty comes in scrambling.

If you don’t put yourself in the right position, the shots are much harder.

For instance, on most courses if you short-side yourself around the green, there are several ways for a casual golfer to still get it close to the hole. Here, that isn’t the case. Several times as an average golfer you have to take your medicine and just try to keep the ball on the green. There isn’t much room to allow your ball to roll; you need to be able to spin it and stop it. It makes watching the pros make it look easy all the more impressive.

Rounds at TPC Deere Run cost on average around $100, which is very fair for a TPC course. It is a course well worth the two-hour drive from Chicago and it would be a good idea to make a trip out of it and play it twice in two days because it is one of those courses where you can learn some things for the next time you play it. I would love to make a twoday trip out of it in the future.

emily suwanski Suwanski, a four-year outfield starter for coach Emmy Paiser’s Maine South Hawks, hit .500 in an injury-free season—her first since being on varsity.

EMMA VARSBERGS The senior third baseman for Downers North belted six homers and hit .384. She was an All-West Suburban Conference pick, and will be playing collegiately at the University of Indianapolis.

“Emma is of most coachable kids I’ve ever had,” said DGN coach Eric Landschoot. “She’s good at staying composed but has her own way of showing her competitiveness. She hit some balls this season that are rare to see a high school softball player hit. I’m sure she’ll jump right into a playing role as a freshman (at Indianapolis).”

Zoe varsBergs Emma’s younger sister, the sophomore first baseman established herself not only as one of Downers North’s top hitters in 2015, but as the focal point of the Trojans’ lineup for the next two seasons. She sported a.461 average with two homers, 24 RBI and a .506 on-base percentage.

Zoe has already verbally committed to Northern Illinois.

“Probably offensively out of all the younger kids in our program, she has the highest ceiling,” said DGN coach Eric Landschoot. “She can truly hit for power, hit for average, and get on base a ton. Zoe is a great two and three hitter; she puts the ball in play and gets on base, can run and can hit. She’s probably the closest thing this program has to a true five-tool player.”

Bianca voZenilek Vozenilek, a sophomore pitcher from Plainfield East, shut out Downers North to win the regional title. She went 20-9 with 206 strikeouts and a 1.82 ERA.

emily york York was a four-year starter at Benet, and her coach, Jerry Schilf, marvels at her defensive play, calling her “the best first baseman in the area. Defensively, she’s phenomenal first basemen. She singlehandedly kept us in many games because of her glove.” York also was a force at the plate, hitting a career .470 with 31 homers.

“She has the fastest bat speed I have ever seen,” Schilf said. “Her hits were never fly balls; they were lasers.”

The Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation recognized businesses’ projects completed in the past 12 months during its third annual Cornerstone Awards luncheon on June 18.

Almost 200 business and community leaders registered for the event, which was held at the DoubleTree Suites Hotel and featured Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti as the keynote speaker. Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital was the groundbreaker sponsor for the luncheon. David Olsen, mayor pro tem for the village of Downers

Grove, presented the awards, which recognize projects based on economic impact and the design of the facility.

The first award was presented to Bentley/Lamborghini Downers Grove, which opened in August 2014 on Ogden Avenue. The DGEDC said the project has helped establish Downers Grove as a location for luxury auto dealers.

“Dealerships are an important part of the local economy, generating substantial sales tax revenues,” DGEDC President and CEO Michael Cassa said in a release. “The grand opening was spectacular, and featured the CEO of Lamborghini, who flew in from Italy for the event.”

Daniel Kern, general manager of the dealership, accepted the award.

Mobile app developer Lextech received the second award, after moving its corporate headquarters to Downers Grove in April.

“Corporate headquarters and other Class A office projects are also an important part of the local economy,” Cassa added.

Lextech, a firm that designs and supports mobile business applications, was named one of the top 150 software firms in the country in 2014 by “Inc. Magazine.” Lextech President Will Scott accepted the award.

The final award was presented to

Shorewood Development Group.

Shorewood redeveloped the former Luxury Motors site at the southeast corner of Ogden Avenue and Florence. The project is anchored by a new Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, which held a grand opening for the new store in April, and includes a commercial out lot building.

Something for Continued from Page 1 Rasin said a 15-member committee brainstorms ideas during the early planning process, but added that the real nuts and bolts of the preparation occurs in November.

The Rotary club will discuss what worked at last year’s fest and decide what will be included in next year’s festivities. This year, the club added a few more additions.

Children could enjoy the carnival games and food stands that ran up and down Main Street, and this year’s festival also included a

craft beer fest for adults. The Craft BeerFest featured more than 100 different beers from 30 breweries.

Rasin estimated that more than 300 people attended the event, adding that it was one of the major highlights of the weekend.

“Saturday is usually the busiest day and the [BeerFest] really brought a lot of momentum for the rest of the evening,” Rasin said.

The BeerFest was intended for some of the fest’s older patrons, but there was still plenty of activities for the younger crowd at the festival. GroveFest offered several discounted ride packages that allowed patrons to have unlimited rides for the weekend.

Keith Hoffman, head of public relations for Rotary Club of Downers Grove, said it was important for the fest to have a good mix of activities and entertainment.

“The fest is about seeing your friends and family and having something for everyone,” Hoffman said. “It really brings in a lot of people.”

Rasin added that this year’s fest would not be a success if it weren’t for the non-profit groups who contributed to the event and the many volunteers who took time out of their day to help.
