Annual memorial service honors lone Downers Grove officer to die in the line of duty

Every year,Downers Grove police and fire personnel join members of the community to honor the memory of slain Downers Grove police officer Richard Barth. Barth was shot and killed on March 18, 1974, after approaching two teens in Hooper’s Hollow Park. The youths had just committed a residential burglary, and when Barth asked them for identification, 16-yearold Paul Fontani fatally shot him.
