There were no injuries, but nearly 30 residents were displaced when a fire ripped through their Woodridge apartment building Thursday afternoon.

Officials said the blaze was started by a propane grill on a second-floor balcony and caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage.

Darien-Woodridge fire fighters were dispatched at 11:14 a.m. to the 12-unit building, located at 7723 Woodward Ave., after numerous residents called to report the fire. Fire fighters saw heavy smoke and noticed the roof of the building starting to collapse upon arriving to the scene.

“Due to the volume of fire and knowledge of the building construction, Command ordered all crews operating on the interior of the structure to evacuate and initiate a strictly defensive fire attack from the exterior of the building,” deputy fie chief Steven Gorsky said in a press release. Gorsky added that winds blowing at 12 to 15 miles per significantly contributed to the rapid growth of the fire. >> see fire | page 8

Woodridge police are continuing their search for a man they believe committed three armed robberies over a four-day span last week near the intersection of 75th Street and Janes Avenue.

“Police are continuing to follow up on leads and actively patrol the area,” said Traci Steger, spokeswoman for the Woodridge Police Department.

Police Tuesday released the description of the suspect who robbed a woman at gunpoint on the afternoon of April 28 in the 7900 block of Janes Avenue.

Police responded to an active armed robbery call Monday afternoon, but did not apprehend the suspect, who is likely involved in similar robberies that occurred Thursday and Sunday. Monday’s robbery was the third such incident to take place in the area over a four-day period.

“We are investigating [the latest robbery] as if it was the same suspect because of the similar description between the three and the location and the items taken,” Steger said.

“They’re all similar.”

Steger said a female victim was unharmed during Monday’s robbery. The suspect stole a cellphone and U.S. currency.

The suspect, described as a Hispanic male, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, was carrying a small handgun at the time of the robbery. He is in his late teens or early 20s, with a medium build. In each incident, the suspect was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, black jeans, a baseball hat with a red bill and a bandana to cover his face.

Police are investigating all three incidents and asking residents for their help in identifying the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call 630-719-4764 or email crimetips@vil.woodridge.il.us.

The first incident occurred at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in the parking lot of Jewel-Osco, 2317 W. 75th St. The victim of that robbery said a man entered the passenger seat of her car with a large butcher knife and demanded money and a cellphone. The suspect then forced her to drive to her bank and then to an area near Boughton and Naperville Road, where he fled on foot.

The victims in that robbery said a male suspect approached their vehicle with a handgun and robbed them of a cell phone, debit card, gift card and a GPS device. He then fled on foot.

In both incidents, the suspect was described as a male around 20 years old, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a scarf over his face.

Steger said District 68 schools were not on lockdown, but said recess, P.E. and after-school programs were cancelled last week.

Library District launches seed lending library Patrons who are unable to attend an orientation will also be able to borrow seeds Libraries aren’t traditionally thought of as a place to find gardening materials, but the Lisle Library District’s new Seed Library isn’t a typical library collection.

The Lisle Library District’s Seed Library, which will allow patrons to “borrow” seeds and return harvested ones at the end of the season,launches Wednesday,May 7.

LLD will be among the first public libraries in Illinois to lend seeds.

The Library is offering “Seed Saving 101” orientations at 7 p.m. on May 7 and May 14 that will cover how to grow plants from seed, as well as how to save seeds from popular garden vegetables.

After the orientation, patrons will be able to select their choice of up to five seed packets from about 50 different types of vegetable seeds available. Attendees are encouraged to help replenish the collection in the fall with their returned seeds.

Patrons who are unable to attend an orientation will also be

able to borrow seeds, and their returned seeds will enter the “local harvest collection” rather than the heirloom collection.This is done to ensure the heirloom seeds remain true to form.

Seed libraries are a nationwide trend, but the concept came to the Lisle Library via Mike Monahan, Librarian and Adult Programming Coordinator.

“I think offering seeds is a natural extension of our services,” said Monahan. “The seed library encourages self-reliance and fosters a culture of sharing – two traditional library goals.”

This culture of sharing is already apparent in the partnership forming between the Seed Library and other local organizations. One of the “Seed Saving 101” orientations will be taught by Katrina Chipman, horticulturalist for the Morton Arboretum.According to Chipman, starting a seed library is important for the community in a couple of different ways.

“Seed lending libraries not only connect the community, but will also help specific varieties of plants become adapted to this area,” said Chipman. “It also gives residents the opportunity to try new plant varieties and select the strongest ones for saving seeds and sharing.”

While the LLD Seed Library will start with an inaugural collection donated by the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company, the goal is to be self-sustaining through return donations of new seeds after the plants grow. Monahan also stressed that the program will work only if borrowers donate seeds in return.

“There are no late fees, but when you check out seeds, our hope is that you collect some of them and return them to the library,” said Monahan.

In addition to launching a seed library, LLD is also hosting an upcoming series of gardening programs:“Be an Herbal Gourmet” and “Make Your Own Garden Wattle” in June, and U of I Extension Master Gardener classes on vegetable gardening and winter sowing in July and August.

Interactions with wildlife such as coyotes is not uncommon, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has developed a website to assist citizens with helpful suggestions regarding how people and wildlife can successfully coexist.

Like most municipalities, the village of Westmont does not trap or capture coyotes or other wildlife. If residents feel they have a nuisance wildlife concern on their property, then they may opt to hire a licensed trapper to address their concern. Licensed trappers are listed with the IDNR. “It is illegal for citizens to possess wildlife without the

SOME TIPS FOR DEALING WITH COYOTES IF SEEN IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: • Coyotes are considered to be nocturnal but it is normal for them to be active during the day as well • If you encounter a coyote, be confident and bold. Make loud noises and make yourself look

larger by raising your hands above your head • Do not be submissive, turn your back or run • Coyotes prefer to be as far from humans as possible, but the loss of their habitat have left them with very few choices. Attacks on humans are rare and there has not been a documented case of a coyote biting a human in DuPage County • Many coyote attacks against dogs are initiated by the dog and not the coyote • Always walk your dog on a leash • Never leave your dogs unattended in your yard and always try to keep them inside at night • Keep your yard well illuminated when outdoors at night • Keep grills and barbecues clean, as well as compost bins and areas around fruit trees and gardens

• Have a bright flashlight with you when walking your dog at night • Keep cats indoors • Coyotes can be creatures of habit. If you encounter one at the same place and time while walking your pet, change your route or the time that you take that walk • If you know the location of the “den”, keep animals and children away from that area.

Never remove the coyote’s young from the den • If you are followed by a coyote, you are likely walking through its territory and it is merely escorting or “shadowing” you to make sure you are not a threat • Don’t use poisons as they are inhumane, may be illegal, and can contaminate the water supply • Removing the coyote is illegal without the proper permits and only creates space for another animal.

Woodridge A theft occurred at approximately 10:11 p.m. April 19 at Thornton’s Gas Station, 2401 63rd St.. Unknown person removed $40.25 worth of gasoline.

A criminal damage to vehicle occurred sometime between 8 p.m.April 20 and 8:06 a.m.April 21 in the 2700 block of Mitchell Drive. Unknown person used a sharp object, possibly a key, to scratch the sides of a parked vehicle.

Kampert will shine in 2014 USA Games

Today, May 7, there are 37days remaining until more than 3,000 athletes compete at the 2014 USA Games for Special O l y m p i c s . speciAl voices DaNIeL Among them is smrokoWskI Brent Kampert, 28, of Crystal Lake, who will compete in track and field on Team Illinois.

The 2014 USA Games will take place the week of June 14 to 21 in Princeton, N.J., the same location of Super Bowl XLVIII earlier this year.

This is the time when everyone in our country can witness what those of us diagnosed with intellectual disabilities are able to accomplish.

Janet Froetscher, the Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics International, says that this is the world’s largest health organization for people with disabilities.

Since an early age, Brent was diagnosed with hypoglycemia, ADHD and epilepsy.

“My disability is more minor than it used to be,” Brent said.“We didn’t even know if I could talk when I was little, and we didn’t know if I’d be able to walk.”

About 14 years ago, Brent used to have frequent seizures. Today, because of the support of his parents fighting for him, he does not have to take medications and has been seizure-free.

In 1998, Brent’s dad learned about Northern Illinois Special Recreation (NISRA), which is the Special Olympics program through which Brent competes in track and basketball.

“I was very much wanting to play basketball since I liked watching Michael Jordan when I was a kid,” Brent said. “He was amazing with his dunking ability and his ‘flying.’”

From 2005 to 2009, Brent took some time off from Special Olympics track because he wanted to compete with his high school during his senior year. He rejoined the team in 2009.

Similar to Brent, I also took some time off from competing in Special Olympics. In 2012, I took the year to fully focus on finishing my last year of college. Many people who are not diagnosed with intellectual disabilities may be able to compete

in extra-curricular activities and complete their school work. For those of us who take extra time to process information, we often have to put activities that we love, such as competing in Special Olympics, on hold.

American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have created more than 2.8 million military veterans, and organizations around the country have made it their mission to support these service men and women.

Founded in 2003, Illinois-based Operation Support Our Troops has grown into one of the best-known military support organizations in the country. Through events like their annual Rockin’ for the Troops concert and with the help of America’s favorite celebrity-G.I. Gary Sinise, the group has raised millions of dollars for active duty service members and veterans.

And, the group isn’t stopping any time soon.

Operation Support Our Troops kicked off the 2014 Rockin’ for the Troops season Thursday at McGrath Acura in Westmont with a celebration featuring food, fun and the group’s most famous supporter.

“Organizations like Operation Support Our Troops-America are vital,” said Gary Sinise, best known for his Academy Award-nominated role as Lieutenant Dan in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump.”

“The war is winding down in Afghanistan, but we’re going to have residual effects from these wars for many years to come.”

The Lt. Dan Band, a musical group started by Sinise in 2003 and named after his character from Forrest Gump, began performing at the inaugural Rockin’ for the Troops in 2006.

“Gary is a person who has really wholeheartedly lent his celebrity status to this cause,” said Deborah Rickert, president of Operation Support Our Troops.“He embraces the idea that every American can’t serve in Iraq or Afghanistan, but every American can serve in their own way.”

A mother of two active duty soldiers, Rickert said Thursday’s kickoff celebration was about more than fundraising.

“Sometimes it can feel really lonely when the rest of the community is sort of unaware that we are still in harm’s way,” she said.

“It gives us an opportunity to not only sell tickets but to engage the community.”

This year’s Rockin’ for the Troops concert will take place July 19 at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Currently in its ninth year, this event alone has raised nearly $3 million for Operation Support Our Troops. Rickert said the success of this event has been crucial to the organization’s ability to fund additional programs of support, adding that proceeds from Rockin’ for the Troops help support around 25 other military support organizations.

Benet tops defending Class 3A state champions

There are good wins for teams over the course of a season.

Then there are the wins that are season and maybe even program changers.

That is what Benet baseball hopes its 14-8 win last week at Joliet Catholic Academy was.

The Redwings, the No. 21 team in the state as ranked by Prep Baseball Report, found themselves down to the No. 6 Hilltoppers 6-3 early and then settled down and got the bats hot en route to the win.

“Our offense came back and won it for us,” said Mike Powers, who came in to the game in the third inning and pitched the win. “They are a great hitting team and we just knew we weren’t going to stop them every inning, so we had to get them when we could.

They are unbelievable, but we played a great game today.”

A day earlier, JCA held off Benet 2-1 behind sophomore pitcher Drake Fellows. Fellows threw a complete game, striking out 11 Redwings.

However, Benet did manage to score the first earned run on Fellows in 30 innings.

“We have been hitting against teams.Yesterday we lost a tough game and I am proud of the guys coming back after that,” said Benet coach Scott Lawler.

“We did not come out and play very well in the first couple of innings and I give the guys a lot of credit for staying with it and coming back and getting the win. Both teams made some plays that we didn’t want to see in the game and it was kind of a sloppy game and we came out on top, but we will take it.”

“Being aggressive is one of the reasons we won today,” said Chris Whelan.They had bullpen pitchers coming in and we just attacked and looked first ball fastball.

No matter how they won, the Redwings will look for the win to give them momentum.

“This is absolutely huge,” Powers said. “To lose a close game yesterday and them come in and get them one game today is a great feeling. I love winning, but against this team, it is even better. We were looking forward to this game all year.”

Last season the Redwing felt slighted when Nazareth Academy earned the top seed

in the IHSA Class 3A Regional beating out Benet, who was the second seed.

The players are hoping this win will give them the boost when it comes to seeding.

“We wanted to come in and show who we are and make a statement,”Whelan said.“This is massive for regional seeding.”

Benet knows it can’t settle now that it earned a big win

over Joliet Catholic.

The Redwings faced St. Viator in a doubleheader Sunday and then took on Niles Notre Dame in East Suburban Catholic Conference games Monday and Wednesday.

Next up is a twin bill with Marist and a pair of weekday games with Marian Catholic.

Lisle dominates possession in win over Westmont

When Lisle and Westmont met in girls soccer last week, the two teams that took the field could not have been more different.

Lisle (8-5-2) has faced some of the top teams in its class this season, while Westmont (0-13) has a young team learning on the field.

The result was a 4-0 Lisle win where the Lions possessed the ball all of the contest and rarely allowed Westmont to cross midfield.

“I was very pleased with how we possessed the ball and how we moved off the ball as far as maintaining the ball,” said Lisle coach Paul Kohorn. “We should have scored more than four goals, but that’s OK. That is where we have been struggling all season.

It was a nice win and we played well.”

The game was played at Wilde Field on grass as opposed to being at Benedictine University where the Lions play.

Kohorn wouldn’t use that as an excuse, however.

“This is our first game on this field this year” he said. “We are used to a bigger, faster field because we usually play at Benedictine. When we get on grass, our game slows down and cuts down a lot of our scoring. I am not complaining, a 4-0 win is a 4-0 win. We have to get used to grass because we are playing our sectional here.”

Kohorn said this season has been a fun one thus far with an experienced defense leading the way for Lisle.

“We have a very experienced defense in the back and they are bottling up teams,” he said. “This has been more of team effort than really any other year in the last four or five.

“Kelsey Kretman leads us in goals and assists and we have Amy Tromp who is not even a starter and is the second leading scorer. She plays big and aggressive and I like what she does. Brean Hutchison in the middle does a nice job of

controlling the game.”

The Lions have played a tough schedule this season trying to get prepared for the playoffs.

“We have played Manteno, who is the class of the state and Parker who is number two,” Kohorn said. “We can play with them, we just haven’t played 80 minutes with them. We can compete with then, but we kind of bogged down at the end of the game and gave some things up.”

While Lisle is playing the best teams in the state, Westmont is building toward the future.

“We have been playing some games against competition where everything is happening in our end and we are starting to break through and we are taking baby steps,” said Westmont coach Ron Neurauter. “We have a young team and we are trying to find some offense. We are starting with defense and we have a second team goalie that is now our first team goalie and we are doing the best we can where we can get in a position to get

up the field and score. But, that is something we are working on.”

Westmont is trying to get back to where it was a few years back.

“Two years ago, we had a senior laden team and we had our best season ever. Now we have young players. They are committed, they are dedicated and they are having fun and

we are rebuilding,” Neurauter said. ”Most of this team were freshmen last year and are now sophomores and they are learning the game. Our next goal is to take it to the next step and start to score. We are seeing improvement and we are learning the game.”

DGN badminton seeks to maintain winning tradition

Seniors Kiley Pooler and Prasanthi Kopparapu knew the task at hand going into the 2014 season. It’s what coach Anthony Calderone refers to as maintaining the tradition of Downers North girls badminton.

And what a tradition it’s been.

The Trojans, who won state titles in 2003 and 2004 and tied Hinsdale Central for the 2006 crown, are coming off a 2013 season in which they posted their best finish at state since 2010, tying for fourth.

But graduation losses hit the team particularly hard. The Trojans said goodbye to seven seniors, five of whom were state qualifiers, including No. 1 doubles team Emily Buhle and Emily Planek.

Pooler is the lone player on the club with any previous state

experience, qualifying as part of a doubles team last year.

“I would say it was hard to try and be a leader as a retuning state person because we lost a lot of really good people,” said Pooler, who this year is competing in the No. 1 singles slot for the Trojans.

“I was trying to get people back to the level that we were at last year. I think that was the biggest thing that I was trying to do.”

Kopparapu, meanwhile, has taken over at No. 2 singles.

“With that many seniors graduating, for me it puts a lot of pressure on myself because I feel like I need to step up and contribute as much to the team,” Kopparapu said. “It’s a lot of pressure, but at the same time as long as I keep working hard and I play hard, and play my game consistently, then it will be to my advantage on the court and things will start going my way.”

Things are starting to go

not only Kopparapu’s way, but the Trojans’ way, as well. DGN finished third at the May 2 West Suburban Conference meet, and took fourth in conference overall this season overall.

Pooler placed second at the meet at No. 1 singles, while Kopparapu moved to No. 5 singles for this meet and also was second. Rachel Schubert, a junior, finished second at No. 6 singles.

In doubles, seniors Kelsey Stallter and Lucy Xi Lu captured the championship at No. 1, and the No. 2 team of juniors Shatien Jordan and Maria McConaughy also won a title. Pooler and Schubert were third at No. 3 doubles, while juniors Lauren Taylor and Leslie Garcia also placed third at No. 6 doubles.

“We’re getting there,” said Calderone, in his 20th season.

“We kind of came in behind the eight ball a little bit, but now

we’ve gotten out from behind it, and the last couple of weeks have been great. I’m looking forward to the growth (from our team) in the next two weeks and I think we should compete. A lot of these girls have risen to the occasion and they’ve worked really hard.”

The season now moves into the home stretch with the Trojans taking part in West Aurora sectional this weekend and the state meet May 16 and 17. Naperville Central, last year’s state runner-up, will be at West Aurora along with Hinsdale South and familiar conference foes such as Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central. LT and Hinsdale South placed sixth and seventh, respectively, at state a year ago.

“I actually think this year that sectionals could be a bigger challenge into state,” Calderone said. “There are a lot of really

strong players in our sectional complex; qualifying out would be our No. 1 goal, just getting everybody there (to state). And from there I like our chances.

“I’m hoping we have a shot at a trophy. I don’t see why not if we can get everybody there. It’s like every year; the draw matters and you’ve got to get out there and execute.”

Pooler said she likes the makeup of this year’s team, which she calls “pretty scrappy.”

“I definitely think we’ve improved a lot,” she said. “Our team was really deep last year and it’s definitely a big comparison, but we’ve been able to pull through and we’ve gotten a lot better.

“I have faith in us.We’ve pulled up our bootstraps and hunkered down so it should be interesting to see how it works out. But I think we should do well.” mike@buglenewspapers.com

Roundup: Mustangs’ gymnastics wins WSC Gold Downers South took home the West Suburban Gold Conference gymnastics championship with a score of 142.150.

The Mustangs were led by Dominic Tommasone, who placed first on the pommel horse (8.8), vault (9.5), parallel bars (8.45), high bar (8.75) and all-around (52.9), while taking second on the floor (9.25).

Evan Baird was second on high bar (7.9), third on vault (8.85) and third in all-around (44.1).

Brock Herion was second in the all-around with a 45.2 and was third in the pommel horse (7.0), rings (7.5) and parallel bars (7.8).

SOFTBALL Benet beat Nazareth 3-2.

Julianne Rurka and Emily York each went 2-for-3, while Stephanie Abello had a home run and two RBI. Molly Moran went seven innings on the mound, allowing eight hits and two earned runs, striking out five to pick up the win.

The Redwings topped Nazareth 9-5. York was 2-for-3 with two homers and four RBI, while Abello, Rurka and Marissa Panko also homered.

•Downers North beat Glenbard West 4-3. Megan Ramsden picked up the win, allowing six hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings.

Jaclyn Pasakarnis (home run, 2 RBI) and Emma Varsbergs each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Dale Ryndak pitched a one-hitter, striking out 12 in Downers North’s 7-0 win over Addison Trail. Kayelee Newstrom went 3-for-4 at the plate, Ali Woitovich had two doubles and Ryndak had a pair of RBI. •Downers South beat Willowbrook 10-0 in six innings.

Caroline Hedgcock struck out 11, allowing only two hits in the shutout. She also had a pair of homers and three RBI at the plate.

Kristin Bialek went 3-for4, while Nicole Bowman and Jessica Andree (3 RBI) hit home

runs.

The Mustangs beat Morton 13-3 in five innings. Caitlyn Daly had a pair of home runs and three RBI, while Rebekah Ondracek and Andree each had two hits and four RBI. Downers South beat Glenbard West 1-0 as Hedgcock got the shutout, striking out five and allowing just one hit.

Zahrya McFarland had a pair of doubles and drove in the lone RBI. The Mustangs won the second game 10-0 in five innings behind three hits, a homer and three RBI from Andree. Payton Buresch had a one-hit shutout.

•Lisle dropped a pair of games to Sandwich. The first was a 3-2 loss. Summer Stitt and Julia Ullmann each went 2-for4 for the Lions. Stitt gave up five hits and two earned runs, striking out five. In the second game the Lions managed three hits.

Don’t make these 401(k) blunders With all of the literature that accompanies retirement plan enrollment, why do retirement savers continue to blow it?

According to a new paper, Americans commit a series of blunders with their retirement accounts. Author Jacob Hale Russell of Stanford Law School says that the flubs are not entirely our fault. “Over the past four decades, the American retirement system has dramatically shifted risk onto the individual worker.”

Whereas in the past,professional investment management committees were tasked with making complicated financial decisions, today the burden has shifted to individuals and the results have not been good.

Retirement investors consistently make the following blunders: Not allocating retirement accounts and leaving money in cash or low-interest money-

market funds,where it will decline relative to inflation Leaving a job, cashing out plan assets and paying a tax penalty, instead of rolling over the funds into another retirement account Choosing high-fee funds Failing to diversify and overinvesting in employer stock Not rebalancing on a periodic basis

Overtrading individual securities Failing to take advantage of employer matching programs for contributions With all of the literature that accompanies retirement plan enrollment, why do retirement savers continue to blow it?

The author posits that people are simply overwhelmed by the decisions that they need to make. The policy response has been to use behavior economics to “nudge” retirement plan

participants into making better decisions.

“Soft paternalism”or“libertarian paternalism” presents choices to individuals in a way that “encourages them to make better choices.The best example was the 2006 enactment of the Pension Protection Act, which allowed companies to automatically enroll employees, who could then choose to opt out, in 401(k) plans. Participation has jumped for those companies who nudged employees into retirement plans.

That’s the good news. However, other efforts have not been as effective. So what should be done?

Russell encourages policymakers to take a big picture approach and ask: What purpose do we want 401(k)’s to serve? Russell notes that there are often conflicts of interest that can lead investors down the wrong path, which is why he advocates regulating the quality and fee structure of the funds that serve as default investment options.

Until a wholesale review and upgrade

to retirement plans occurs, here are some tips which should help improve your retirement plan results:

Put your 401(k) plan on autopilot: Many plans offer the opportunity to automatically increase annual contributions.

Have the plan add one or two percent each year in order to maximize your contributions over time. Additionally, plans also can be set to auto-rebalance your allocation on a periodic basis (quarterly, biannually or annually).

Using this feature can help take emotions out of the investment process.

Diversify your holdings: You know that you shouldn’t put too many eggs in one basket. But some participants don’t realize how much overlap they may have among their retirement funds. It’s far more important to diversify among asset classes (stocks,bonds, commodities and cash) than in the total number of funds. If your company stock is an option in

your plan, limit your exposure to 5 percent of your holdings.

Choose index funds, when possible:One way to increase your return without risk is to reduce the cost of investing. If your plan offers index funds, you may be able to save for retirement at a fraction of the cost of managed funds. If your plan is filled with expensive funds, gather your coworkers and lobby your boss to add low-cost index funds to your plan.

Beware pre-retirement withdrawals During the recession, many were forced to take withdrawals from their retirement accounts to survive. But many workers still dip into retirement funds to fund everything from mortgages to credit cards and other bills.

While the IRS does allow for hardship withdrawals in certain instances, pulling money from retirement accounts should be a last resort, due to potential fees and tax implications.

onsidering missing aircrafts, earthquakes and school violence, our children are exposed to news of tragedies and natural disasters.

Children will have questions as they attempt to understand and cope with the information they hear and images they see.

It is extremely important for parents to monitor how their kids react and to provide answers and age-appropriate guidance. In this month’s column we provide tools to

Talk to your Children It is very important for families to communicate with their kids at all times, but especially when tragedies and disasters are prominent stories in the news. Parents should start the conversation.

If your children have not already heard about an event, they surely will in the in coming days.

Not talking about tragedies can sometimes make things more frightening for a child.

Tell your child that it is okay to be upset and scared, and make sure they know you are there to discuss what they have heard and seen.

Ask them what they have seen and what they know. Listen carefully and patiently. Make mental notes of how much they know, if they have heard any misinformation, and how they are reacting.

Encourage them to ask questions and be sure to answer those questions as honestly and directly as possible. Use simple, clear, age-appropriate

Observe their Reactions and Behaviors of tragic events, they often experience feelings of fear and uncertainty. They struggle to understand what it means for them and the safety of their parents and family. Parents should take notice of loss of previously acquired developmental skills and disturbances in sleep such as not wanting to go to sleep or nightmares. These young children may also have difficulties separating from parents to go to preschool or to play at a friend’s house.

School age children may have persistent feelings of fear and concern regarding their own safety as well as the safety of friends and family. They may experience significant sadness and sometimes

help families deal with traumatic events.

Doctor’s RX: Media reports are filled with stories and images of disasters, violence, and tragedy. These exposures can be disturbing to children of all ages and trigger strong emotions. It is critical for parents to have open and honest discussions with their kids so that they can find ways to cope with their feelings and fears. And as always – consult your pediatrician for additional guidance.

As the discussions take place, parents need to reassure their children they are safe, and review plans to protect them from harm. Share your own feelings so they see it is okay to be sad and feel empathy for the victims. We do not always have an explanation for why these tragic events happen.

It can be very helpful to share positive images and discuss the heroic actions of first responders and how many people are working to help the victims who were affected.

Once the preliminary discussion ends, make sure your child knows that you are always available to answer questions and talk further.

Ask them daily what they have heard and what questions they have. Media coverage of these tragic events can span weeks, so it is critical that these conversations happen frequently.

Adolescents are frequently self-conscious about being open with their feelings and emotions. They may withdraw from families or friends as they feel scared, vulnerable and want to avoid being labeled “abnormal.” Parents should watch for some of the same physical complaints and sleep changes as those noted in school age children.

The difficulties teenagers experience with coping can lead to risk taking or even self-destructive behaviors.

Monitoring and Managing Media Exposure Media coverage can trigger increased fears and anxiety in children. Kids are bombarded in many media sources with graphic images and stories of injury and death, all of which can be especially upsetting. It is important for parents to monitor what media sources their children are exposed to. Parents of very young children, who are unlikely to understand what they are hearing and seeing, may choose to limit or even eliminate all exposure to media. Even if they seem to be busy playing or involved in some other activity, they are often aware of what their parents and older siblings are watching, so be aware of their presence.For older children, parents should watch the coverage along with them.

Teenagers also get information from the internet and social media sources such as Facebook and Twitter, so it is helpful for parents to monitor these outlets. These measures will give you in-depth knowledge of what kids see and hear, enabling you to provide the best answers to questions.
