There were no injuries, but nearly 30 residents were displaced when a fire ripped through their Woodridge apartment building Thursday afternoon. Officials said the blaze was started by a propane grill on a second-floor balcony and caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage. Darien-Woodridge fire fighters were dispatched at 11:14 a.m. to the 12-unit building, located at 7723 Woodward Ave., after numerous residents called to report the fire. Fire fighters saw heavy smoke and noticed the roof of the building starting to collapse upon arriving to the scene. “Due to the volume of fire and knowledge of the building construction, Command ordered all crews operating on the interior of the structure to evacuate and initiate a strictly defensive fire attack from the exterior of the building,” deputy fie chief Steven Gorsky said in a press release. Gorsky added that winds blowing at 12 to 15 miles per significantly contributed to the rapid growth of the fire. >> see fire | page 8
