Downers Grove Police Chief Robert A. Porter announced Monday that a suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a recent armed robbery.

Carlo M. Castelo, 27, 4008 Park St., Westmont, was arrested Monday for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery at the Sally Beauty Supply store, 46 Ogden Ave., police said. At approximately 6:25 p.m., Feb. 11, Downers Grove Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Sally Beauty Supply store.

The employee gave him money from the register and the man then ran from the store. Police were able to develop information and use physical evidence, which led to the eventual arrest of Castelo.

The DuPage County States Attorney approved a charge of armed robbery for the offender. Castelo is being held in the Du Page County Jail with bail set at $300,000.

Village sets workshop dates for 2014-15 budget process New board members prepare for first budget, bring prior experience

Budget season is upon the village of Westmont, and this year the process will involve four new faces.

Last week, the village announced that it has scheduled three community budget workshops that are set begin April 2. However, the 2014 budget process began earlier this year with a preliminary workshop for the new village board.

Village Manager Ronald Sear said that meeting was intended to provide board members with a list of general considerations that the various village departments are proposing for the upcoming year.

“Since we have three new board members and a new mayor, we wanted to bounce some ideas off of them, and get a sense of how important things were to them before we get into the heat of battle,” Searl said.

Mayor Ron Gunter, who was elected last April along with three new village board trustees, was not directly involved in setting the 2013-14 budget.

By the time he was sworn in as mayor on May 6, 2013, much of the process had already occurred.

However, the first-term mayor said he learned a lot about Westmont’s budget process by attending last year’s workshops.

Combine these observations with more than three decades of experience as the director of the Westmont Park District,

and Gunter said he is confident this year’s budget will progress smoothly.

“I’ve been in government financing, running the park district for 37 years,” Gunter said.

“I’m familiar with bonds. I’m familiar with levies. I’m familiar with the whole process. For me, that all was a big benefit.”

Trustees James Addington, Bruce Barker and Harold Barry joined Gunter last spring as newcomers to the village board, but Gunter said each trustee has prior experience that will be valuable in working through the 2014-15 budget.

Although the budget workshops aren’t set to begin for another month, Finance Director Spencer Parker said the budget talks are already underway.

“We begin our earliest conversations regarding the budget about six months prior to budget approval,” Parker said. “The fact that the process takes about half the year is a good thing because it forces our Village to continuously scrutinize and validate our revenues and expenditures.”

The loss of home rule status in the fall of 2012 presented a significant revenue obstacle for the village during last year’s budget.

Searl said the village has done a good job of managing those short-term revenue losses associated with home rule, but added that uncertainty with the state’s finances could add additional budgetary obstacles

“One of the things that concerns us and municipalities across the state is the pension liability situation,” Searl said.

“We also keep hearing that the state may dip into the Local Government Distributive Fund, which is a revenue source we rely on.”

Another, although less significant, budgetary concern for Westmont is the amount of money spent on snow and ice removal so far this year.

“I’m anxious to see where we are at with all the weather we’ve had this years and where we’re going to be with our expenses for snow plowing and everything else,” Gunter said.

Searl said that the village is over budget in its snow and ice removal operations, but stressed that it is not enough to be a “budget breaker.”

“It’s had a significant impact on everybody I talk to, including the communities around us,” Sear said. “It’s been a harsh winter. We haven’t had one in a while. But, I don’t think it’s going to be something we can’t overcome.”

The village expects to have a budget approved sometime in May.

4 GOP candidates make competitive run for House New 11th District now covers Kane, Kendall, DuPage, Will and Cook counties

In what is becoming the most highly watched race in the Illinois primary, four GOP candidates are making a competitive run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives 11th Congressional District.

Grundy County Board Member Chris Balkema, businessman Bert Miller, current state Rep. Darlene Senger and conservative talk show host Ian Bayne are seeking the Republican nomination in the March 18 primary election to determine who will run against Democrat Bill Foster in the general election this November.

In a game-changing race, Foster ousted veteran Republican Judy Biggert in the l1th Congressional District in November 2012.

Biggert claimed a Republican stronghold in the area for more than a decade, beginning her reign in 1999.

However the new 11th District now stretches through Chicago’s western suburbs and covers five counties: Kane, Kendall, DuPage, Will and Cook. Residents are encouraged to prepare for and be alert to these conditions and know what to do when they occur.

Being aware of when and where to seek shelter during extreme weather events can save lives.

The purpose of the sirens is to alert those who are outdoors to the threat of danger due to weather conditions or a National Emergency.

If you are indoors you may not hear the siren.

Be alert to changing weather conditions when severe weather

is imminent by monitoring broadcast radio or television stations. There are also a variety of weather apps available for smart phone users.

Downers Grove follows DuPage County guidelines for the activation of outdoor sirens that have been developed to achieve consistency in the event that multiple jurisdictions activate warning sirens.

The siren sound means to take shelter immediately, and Downers Grove personnel are asking residents to not ignore it.

The emergency is not over when the sirens stop and there will be no “all clear siren.

South High introduces new tradition for 50 anniversary th

School seeks distinguished alumni Downers Grove South high school has launched a “Distinguished Alumni” program to recognize and honor those alumni who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at the school.

Similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, the Harlem Wizards help raise funds for local organizations through show basketball. “[We’re] helping to bring communities and families together,” said Dwayne “Swoop” Simpson, 36, a member of the Harlem Wizards.

The Holy Trinity game began at 6 p.m. with a few jokes, safety instructions and introductions of both of the teams. Children of all ages were among the fans smiling, laughing and enjoying time with their community.

Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter is a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church and was one of the guest referees for the game. Before the game kicked off, two of the Harlem Wizards players had snuck up behind Gunter and put two chalk prints on his bottom.

“The great thing that will be gained is the fundraising for the school, village, and wider community,” said Pamela Simon, principal of Holy Trinity Catholic School.

As the game got underway, a wide-variety of antics ensued.

Johnson, otherwise known as “Swoop,” had acted like he had fallen over, while one of his teammates had pretended to give him CPR. Another teammates then went into the stands to

grab a young girl’s boot that had appeared to be smelly. Swoop then got up and went into the stands to throw up silly string on a few of the spectators.

The fans smiled and looked on as these antics took place, and others captured the humorous moments with their cameras. One fan near the top of the stands had held a sign that read:“Tigers Rule.”

During halftime, some of the fans were chosen from the stands to help with some trick basketball contests.

“The halftime was really funny,” said Heather Sledzinski, a 10-yearold fan.

Just before the second half of the game had started, Gunter said Holy Trinity had a threepoint advantage over the Harlem Wizards.

“If I can help Holy Trinity—oh I’m not suppose to say that right,” said Gunter, as he looked forward to refereeing the second half of the game.

event would help purchase things like materials for the school and extra teaching aides for the teachers.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. Feb. 20,Westmont Police Department detectives conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of East Ogden Avenue pursuant to a burglary investigation. In the past several weeks, Westmont residents have reported numerous burglaries and thefts between Ogden Avenue and Naperville Road. Detectives arrested Erica Miller, female, age 22, James Dalu, male, age 25, and Nicholas Dunkelberger, age 26, all of 211 East Naperville Road #1E, Westmont. Miller was charged with possession of a controlled substance (heroin). Dalu and Dunkelberger were charged with multiple counts of burglary.

They were all transported to the DuPage County Jail for bond hearings.

Feb. 19 and 8 p.m. Feb. 20, an unknown offender(s) stole tires from a business in the 400 block of Plaza Drive. Total loss is $1,600.

He also had a valid warrant and was transported to the DuPage County Jail for a bond hearing.

Main St., Downers Grove, was charged with obstructing a village official, operating a motor vehicle while using an electronic communications device, and failure to wear seatbelt, following a traffic stop in the 8200 block of Cromwell.

Unknown person shattered the passenger side window and removed a stereo system from a parked vehicle.

Speaking up against the R-Word A question to answer: Where and when is a good time to say something?

The word “retard(ed),” or the “r-word” as I call it, is a word that is really hurtful for all of us with special needs, as well as our families and friends.

Just like many of my fellow Special Olympics athletes, I don’t really like to drive. Yes, there are some who do drive (and I used to about six years ago), but many of us take public transportation.

A couple years ago, I was taking the train home from college.

On this particular evening commute, the train was packed, and I couldn’t find a seat. So, I had to stand (and hold on to the train) amid the crowd of other commuters. As I usually do, I put my earbuds in and pretended like I was listening to a podcast, when all of a sudden, one of the conductors was in the doorway of the train talking with some of the other commuters. I heard the train conductor use the r-word multiple times during this train ride. It was hard for me to say anything because it just hurt too much to hear him use the word.

After I got home safe and sound, I wrote a letter to the train company and later talked with one of the workers at the rail ticket counter in my hometown.

The train company had eventually emailed me back and apologized.

I haven’t heard anything from this train conductor since, but I hope and pray he learned a lesson about how the r-word hurts all of us with special needs.

Fast forward a couple years to present day--Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at 7:04p.m. I was riding the train

back home with a friend who I met via another friend.

As we were talking, I noticed a man and a woman talking somewhat loudly. These two people appeared to be drunk.

As the 7 o’clock hour struck, I got up from my seat and made my way to the vestibule of the train. When I was waiting for the train to pull into my stop, these two same commuters had used the r-word to refer to the town that we were getting off at.

This brings up an interesting point: When is a good time to say something? Should you speak up against the r-word each time some says the word even if they appear to be “drunk?”

Miller believes America needs leaders who are willing to work together without bipartisan fighting to get results for the American people.

“As I travel throughout the 11th Congressional District, the number one issue on the minds of voters is the economy,” said Miller. “Illinois has the third highest unemployment rate in the U.S., and we’ve recently seen the slowest job growth in the last three years because President Obama and Congressman Foster’s support for higher taxes and more regulations.”

“He said he is not a politician, but is president of Phoenix Closures, his Naperville family business that has existed for more than a century and “employs hundreds of workers with good pay and healthcare.”

Senger holds similar beliefs that job creation and economic

growth should be the top and that cutting back on burdensome, unnecessary and unrealistic regulations is the first step towards creating jobs.

Calling for a health care overhaul, she believes that costs of health care need to be lowered by creating competition in a free market setting,not through government mandates.

A primary concern for Bayne as well, he believes the ACA should be repealed and is running to “restore lower taxes, less spending and freedom to the American people.”

Bayne said, “The district faces catastrophic loss of jobs and opportunity due to failed economic policy that is being supported by establishment politicians in Washington.

Opposing and defeating people with bad ideas is very important because these bad ideas are causing the American people to suffer.”

Bayne believes “as a free market conservative, I know that the government cannot do anything better than people can do acting without government.

Our families, our schools, our

businesses, our finances, our health—government has no right to tell us how to live or behave, or weigh in on these issues.”

He is opposed to gun control and is a supporter of the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms. Bayne is in favor of reducing federal control of schools, placing control back in the hands of local elected officials and of teaching American exceptionalism in schools.

Bayne also is a proponent of small business owners and believes small business is the backbone of the American economy and should be freed from unnecessary regulation.

He plans to oppose overregulation of small business.

Craig Robbins recently withdrew his candidacy. He said while he remains dedicated to serving the community, Illinois and the country, changes in his professional and military service obligations in 2014 will make it too difficult to commit the time necessary to run a successful campaign through the general election in November.

Horoscopes Actions speak louder than words. You may put too much emphasis on appearances and charm this week, when it’s what you actually do that concerns people the most. Performing a kind act for someone will get you further than meaningless sweet-talk.

Don’t pick favorites.

To satisfactorily strike a compromise in the week ahead, you must find a solution that benefits everyone equally. Beware of those who may try to buddy up to you just to get a bigger slice of the pie.

Don’t jump to conclusions.

When a situation may have those around you ready to take immediate action this week, it may be wiser to adopt a wait-and-see approach. Don’t allow uncertainty and fear to spur a poor decision.

There are two sides to every story. Don’t accept someone’s viewpoint as gospel simply because that was the one you heard first. Make sure you have all the facts at your disposal before reaching any conclusions in the week ahead.

Accentuate the positive. Make an effort to focus on the good things going on in your life during the coming week. Being optimistic will make you more appealing to others and soon you’ll find the dice rolling in your favor.

There’s no shame in taking a short-cut. You shouldn’t wear yourself out in the upcoming week when you can achieve your goals with minimal effort. Use free time to socialize and share ideas with those around you.

Enjoy tea for two. While you may not be ready to declare someone your soul mate, you can spend a pleasant afternoon in the week ahead with a person you’re proud to call a friend. Don’t plead poverty when it comes time to pay the tab.

Good friends don’t cost a thing. With that in mind, you’d be well served by spending the day with your inner circle of close pals rather than going on a shopping spree.

The best way to spend money this week is to not spend it at all.

Make sure that the only toes you’re standing on are your own.

You may be able to accomplish your goals with ease, but in doing so you may infringe upon someone else’s territory. Think things over before taking action in the week ahead.

Change your perspective. You may be too close to a matter to see things objectively, so it may be in your best interest to get some distance so you can look at the situation from a different angle. Ignore unfounded suspicions this week.

The only thing to fear is fear itself. In the week ahead, you may find that your doubts are the only thing holding back your progress. Be careful that those with whom you’ve placed your trust are truly dependable.

Ignoring a problem won’t make it go away. In fact, the longer you leave a situation to fester on its own, the worse it will get. In the week ahead, take immediate action to set things right before they get out of hand.

DGS alum Riauka leads Parkside into postseason

The University of WisconsinParkside has been having one of its best seasons in program history and Downers Grove South alum Zygimantas Riauka is a big reason why.

Riauka leads the team with 16.6 points and 9.2 rebounds and has helped the Rangers to a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title.

He also is second on the team with 87 assists and is getting the job done defensively with 51 blocks and 18 steals. He is shooting at a .638 clip.

“The coaches keep pushing and I feel like I’m getting better all the time,” Riauka said. “Every practice.”

Riauka averaged 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds as a sophomore with 37 blocks and 32 steals, while shooting .531 from the floor. In his freshman campaign he averaged 8.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game with 27 blocks.

“I started the second half of my freshman year, but I didn’t play as hard as I could have,” Riauka said. “Every year I just have been building up and it has been awesome. Every summer I keep trying to work out. This summer I played for the under-20 national team (Lithuania), so that helped me out condition-wise. It was awesome.”

The hard work Riauka has put in has paid off and could pay off in the future.

With just one more year left in college, he has his sights set on continuing his basketball career after college.

“Hopefully I can go overseas,” Riauka said. “That would be the best thing for me. Maybe even get drafted.I don’t see that happening right now, but you have to keep working at it.”

But for now, Riakua is busy leading his team to new heights.

He returned to the Downers Grove area Feb. 27 for a big GLVC game against Lewis University in Romeoville.

In that game Riauka had 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting with six rebounds and three assists as the Rangers won 76-70.

“It was great,” Riauka said. “To tell you the truth, the past two years this has been the worst place to play. I had so many people come to support me and we would lose all the time. It was nerve-wracking.To come out and get the win, I can’t even describe it. It was awesome.”

“We decided not to double Ziggy down low,” Lewis coach Scott Trost said. “Looking back I don’t know if that is the right move, but he is such a good passer.”

Riauka picked up two early fouls but never fouled out of the game, a big plus for Parkside.

“I just stayed focused and kept grinding,” Riauka said. “I picked up two quick fouls so that was kind of dumb of me. It happens.

I usually tend to do that in important games. But I battled through it.”

Returning home and having familiar faces in attendance adds some pressure for Riauka, but he handled it well in his third trip.

“There is definitely more pressure here,” Riauka said.

“There are so many friends who come out and support me and I get nervous usually. I can’t even describe it.”

Now Riauka and the Rangers are ready for the GLVC Tournament in Evansville, Ind. March 7 at 6 p.m. They currently are the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region and the top eight teams qualify for the NCAA Division II tournament.

Trojans fall in sectional semis

The Trojans found themselves trailing Batavia and sharpshooting guard Liza Fruendt by a 52-39 margin with 5:22 to play in their Addison Trail sectional semifinal game Feb. 25.

Downers North coach Stephan Bolt, though, had a feeling his club had another run left in it, and his hunch proved to be correct.

The Trojans mounted a furious comeback, scoring 13 unanswered points over the next 3:52 to tie the game. However, Batavia’s 6-2 sophomore Hanna Frazier muscled inside for a layup with 14 seconds to go, was fouled and completed a threepoint play.

That proved to be the difference as Batavia ended

Downers North’s best season since 1996, eventually winning the game, 57-52. In the title game Feb. 27, the No. 3 seeded Bulldogs (21-10) were eliminated by rival Geneva, 48-24—the fifth seed which surprised top-seeded Wheaton Warrenville South, 5554 in the sectional semifinals.

Geneva (25-5) faced Rockford Boylan in the supersectionals Monday at Judson University.

“I’m proud of our kids for the way they fought,” said secondyear coach Stephan Bolt. “We’re down in the second half and we refused to go easily. We fought back to tie it up and a couple of mistakes down the stretch defensively, and they took advantage of it. They’re a good team, but I’m proud of our kids.”

Redwings’ season ends against Neuqua Valley Benet’s Peter Paul coaches final game

Emily Schramek scored nine points in Benet’s loss to Neuqua Valley.

It was the end of a season and a career Feb. 24 when No. 4 seed Benet fell to No. 1 seed Neuqua Valley 54-37 in a Joliet Central Sectional semifinal.

Not only did the Redwings’ season come to an end, but so to did the coaching career of Benet coach Peter Paul, who picked up his 600th win earlier in the season.

“I told the girls we have nothing to be ashamed of,” Paul said.“We were 10-6 at the halfway point and nobody expected us to be here. Today we didn’t play as well as we could have. Give credit to them because they took it to us. From the beginning they shot the ball well and made free throws. We struggled all the way through.We didn’t shoot the ball

well today.”

The Wildcats had constant pressure on the Redwings throughout the game with both a full court press and a half-court trap, which made the Redwings rush shots and not get many open looks.

“We were not in sync,” Paul said.“Our passes were not sharp.

Their pressure had a lot to do with that. They are very, very quick. We hurried a little bit rather than take our time.”

Benet was down 10-2 quickly and 18-8 after one quarter. While it was never completely out of the game, the last time the game was in single digits was 20-13 in the second quarter.

I knew they were going to get back in the game.We didn’t have enough to close it (out) but we fought all the way back and gave ourselves a chance.”

Consecutive three-pointers from Sarah Costello and Jaida Green, followed by Madison Farnsworth’s short baseline jumper, helped the Trojans pull to within 52-49. Then Green rifled in a trey with 1:30 left to tie it up.

“That’s what happens,” said Fruendt, a Michigan State recruit who led all scorers with 31 points but was limited to 10 vs.

Fruendt put on a shooting exhibition during the third

“She knocked down some tough shots and that’s what she does,” Bolt said.“She had it going tonight, and that’s a tough pill to swallow playing as hard as we did. But give them credit. They knocked down some big shots.”

“I think we weren’t moving the ball well (in the third quarter) and we were just settling for jump shots,” Costello said. “But once we started going on defense and we started getting in transition and moving the ball well, that’s when we hit our open shots (in the fourth).”

Costello ended her brilliant four-year varsity career at DGN with 19 points while Green contributed 17.

“Sarah’s obviously learned a lot over the years and she’s shared some of that wisdom with our younger kids,” Bolt said.

business right down to the end is something that we can all take from and learn. She just refuses to lose. At York (for the regional championship) it was the same thing; she just wasn’t ready to be done yet and (she went) right down to the end today.”

Bolt paid tribute to Costello and the rest of the Trojans’ senior class afterward.

“I just would just like to thank them,” he said. “We hadn’t won a regional championship in almost 20 years and we won a conference championship for the first time ever. It’s a big stepping stone for our program.

“We’ve talked about it for the last two years; we’re going to do this with kids like Sarah and Sydney (Huggins) and Paula (Gutierrez) and Colleen (Honn), my seniors paving the way for us, and young, great kids like Jaida and Lauren (Porcelli) and Peyton (Winters).”

Winters, a junior, and Green and Porcelli, both sophomores, give the Trojans a solid nucleus going into next season.

“It’s been a fun, fun season,” Bolt said. “I can’t thank my kids enough for the effort and the drive and the commitment that they’ve shown this year to put our program in a position where, hey, North can play basketball.

“I’m looking forward to relaxation a little bit,” Paul said.

“We have everyone coming back basically. We had three seniors who played for us. The future looks very bright for Benet Academy. So, it isn’t the end of an era, it’s just the start of somebody else taking over.”

Despite the loss, it was another successful season for the Redwings. They won their fifth regional title in the past six seasons and helped Paul’s career continue an extra few days.

“They worked very hard and they tried to make this an experience for me,” Paul said.

“I’m grateful for that. We took it a step farther than we did last year and that’s what we wanted to do. Hopefully next year they will take it a step farther than

When Paul looks back on his career, there is much to be proud of.

“I look back on it and I’m very proud,” Paul said.“I can look back and honestly say that I never saw a seventh or eighth grade team play. I coached who comes through the door. I’m very proud to say that.”

SWIMMING A few locals competed in the state swim meet over the weekend at Evanston High School.

Michael Tegeler of Downers South placed 15th in the 200yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.61 and was 27th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.48.

Fellow Mustang Josh Jager took 17th in diving with a total of 173.90.

Downers North’s John Derrig placed 26th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.29.

Millison played at Lewis Feb. 20 where he scored 18 points and pulled down four rebounds in a

74-66 loss.

Two days later Millison faced off with Riauka, with Parkside winning 83-74.

Riauka talled 18 points and 12 boards in the game, while Millison had nine points.

“The last game we played

against Jamall,” Riauka stated.

“It was awesome to see him. He is doing pretty well over there at Springfield. It is awesome to represent Downers Grove. All of us still talk to each other.”

Joliet Catholic holds off Bishop Mac for sectional crown

The Joliet Catholic Academy girls basketball players and coaches knew all about Khadaizha Sanders and Bishop McNamara and knew despite winning twice this season, the Irish were not going to lie down in the finals of the Lincoln-Way West Sectional Thursday.

A year ago, it was Bishop Mac that upset the Angels in the opening round of the Peotone Sectional after JCA had won both regular-season match-ups.

This year, the Angels came ready to play, using a huge first eight minutes and withstood a second-half Irish flurry to win 78-70 and advance to the Lewis University Supersectional, which took place March 3.

Michigan State-bound senior Jasmine Lumpkin scored 17 points in the first quarter without missing a shot to pace the Angels to a 32-14 lead at the end of one.

“I was focused and I just really came to play,” Lumpkin said. “My teammates believed in me and they were getting me the ball and I wasn’t going to shy away from it, I was going to attack the basket. I am a senior and I have to play like every game is my last.”

Sanders scored 22 of her gamehigh 35 points in the second half as Bishop Mac cut the lead to single digits.

As the Irish defense focused its efforts on Lumpkin and sophomore Nicole Ekhomu, senior Christine Ekhomu stepped up and scored all 13 of her points in the second half.

“They really put an emphasis on shutting down the middle so I couldn’t get the pass to Jasmine and if I went left, they were trying to shut down Nicki so I couldn’t get the pass to her,” Christine said. “So, I figured if I attacked the middle it would open it back up.”

Lumpkin finished the game with a team-best 27 points, while Nicole Ekhomu added 22 points.

With the win, Christine helped the Angels become the first girls basketball program to reach a supersectional since St. Francis Academy and Joliet Catholic merged in 1990.

As St. Francis Academy, the Angels fell 52-44 to East Aurora in 1983-84. The following year, the two met again and the Angels defeated East Aurora 62-59 to advance to the state quarterfinals. A 65-58 loss that year to Richwoods stopped that run in the final eight, the best finish ever for an Angel team.

“It feels good to be a part of making history,” Christine said.

“JCA has been around for a long time and they have had some great players like the Quigley sisters and it feels good to stay I am a part of that, but we are trying to get further.”

A win Monday at Lewis would make this year’s team the firstever to advance to the state Final Four.

Only two Joliet teams have ever reached the IHSA girls final four, as Joliet West won the firstever girls state title in 1977-78 and Joliet East was third in 197980.

A game earlier, JCA used the hot early shooting of sophomore Nicole Ekhomu and a 7-0 run to open the second half to take a 78-67 win at Lincoln-Way West over Morgan Park.

“Coach told us at halftime that the first three minutes of the half was going to be the game,” Nicole said.

The teams battled back and forth all first half and JCA found itself trailing at the end of the first quarter and were trailing in the closing seconds of the first half before a Christina Ekhomu three-pointer put the Angels up one at the break.

As one of the starting seniors, Christina said she was not going to let the team lose in the sectional opener again.

All about good timing Budget airlines typically offer flights for about $50 to $250, but you can find some remarkable, it-must-be-a-typo deals if your timing is right.

For example, Ryanair flies from London to dozens of European cities, sometimes for less than $30.

To get the lowest fares, book long in advance, as the cheapest seats sell out fast (aside from occasional surprise sales).

Pay attention to arrival locations

These days “budget European travel”includes point-to-point flights within Europe. When I started traveling, no one spending their own money bought one-way air tickets within Europe. It was prohibitively expensive.

Nowadays, before buying any long-distance train or bus ticket,I look into flying, and routinely, it’s cheaper to fly than to make the trip on the ground - especially when you consider all the advantages of flying.

Because you can make hops just about anywhere on the Continent for roughly $100 a flight, people think about itineraries differently.

Rather than think “where can I drive to” or “where will the train take me conveniently,” you can now think “where will my travel dreams take me” and lace together a farflung trip that ranges from Norway to Portugal to Sicily, if you please.

There was a time when my typical trip plan was what used to be called an“open jaw”itinerary - now dubbed a “multiple-city” trip (flying into one European city and out of another at the other end of the Continent) with all the travel between done by rail pass. That’s when flights were

expensive and rail passes really were passes. Now inter-European flights are cheap and rail passes are complicated with lots of limits and extra fees. I generally structure a trip these days with the same multiplecity flights and connect everything in between with a series of car rentals, point-to-point rail tickets and cheap one-way flights.

Despite their hassles, budget flights present you with a world of possibilities. If you have a flexible schedule, consider keeping an eye out for special fares and letting that guide your itinerary.

For much of my traveling life, I never considered flying within Europe. It simply wasn’t affordable.

But today that kind of thinking seems so 20th century. Nowadays, Europe’s vagabonds are jetsetters.
