Trivia challenge raises almost $10K for SEASPAR The South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation (SEASPAR) hosted its 6th annual Trivia Challenge fundraiser on Friday, October 20 at the American Legion Post 80 in Downers Grove.

More than 240 SEASPAR supporters tested their trivia skills at the event, answering questions about music, television, history, and more, plus playing a delicious round of “Name That Cereal.” The winning team, led

by Bridget Fitzgerald of La Grange Park, won a $500 prize, which they generously donated back to SEASPAR. The event raised nearly $10,000 to support SEASPAR’s recreational programs and services for individuals with disabilities served by the park districts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lemont, Lisle, Westmont, and Woodridge, and the villages of Brookfield, Indian Head Park, and Western Springs.

Living Cemetery brings history to life Downers Grove Historical Society committed to preserving past

Just in time for Halloween, the Downers Grove Historical Society took visitors on a tour of the cemetery plots for Downers Grove’s pioneers during its annual program called The Main Street Living Cemetery on Oct. 21.

On west side of Main Street between Curtiss and Grove streets, a half-acre park sits in downtown Downers Grove; it was home to nearly 100 people—babies and children, Civil War soldiers, mothers, fathers, a veteran of the War of 1812, a former slave, politicians, store owners, blacksmiths and farmers.

“I think [the program] keeps the history of Downers Grove alive because these people were the core peoples founding the Village, and, of course, over the years people might forget who these people are,” said Lois Storba, treasurer for the Downers Grove Historical Society. “This program brings alive these people who actually made this Village. These are the early people who came from the east and settled here. They were

from New York, Connecticut, or Vermont.”

Around that time, people started traveling westward to obtain land at a cheaper price.

Main Street Cemetery original served as a portion of a sheep pasture tended by a man named Samuel Curtiss. In 1864, a cemetery association formed and purchased the land in question, which later became part of the central business district of Downers Grove.

Downers Grove’s early families, including Israel Blackburn, a freedman, and members of the Blanchard, Curtiss and Wells’ families were buried on site. Among the people of the Village that is not buried in the cemetery are its founder, Pierce Downers, and his wife, Lucy Ann Wilson. Instead, the two rest at in a family plot located on the original Downer homestead.

“There used to be a creek that ran through downtown Downers Grove, the St. Joseph’s Creek,” she said. “It’s gone underground now, but when it flooded the people on the north side of town couldn’t here to this part of town.”

“We came last year,” she said.

“It was very interesting. The actors do a nice job.”

This year’s program was made possible with contributions put in by The Living History Guild of DuPage County and the drama club for Herrick Middle School.

They provided assistance by serving as actors that shared the sto-

ries of Downers Grove’s early settlers with anyone who dropped in.

“I think many of [the visitors] find it very interesting that this program talks about the Village because in our school curriculum, here, in second grade, we teach the kids about the history of Downers Grove, but then after that, we don’t say too much about it. … People want to know the history of Downers Grove.”

The Society members believe that promoting the rich and unique history of Downers Grove creates a strong sense of place and a vibrant community for residents, businesses, and well as visitors.

DUPAGE COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY

Lawsuit filed against suburban gas station Madigan Asks Court to Ensure Gas Station Remains Closed, Cleanup Work Continues Chicago — Attorney General Lisa Madigan and DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin today filed a lawsuit against Speedway LLC over a gasoline leak at one of the company’s DuPage County gas stations that resulted in an explosion at a condominium complex and several additional explosions in the nearby community.

Madigan and Berlin filed the complaint and motion for immediate and preliminary injunction in DuPage County Circuit Court against Speedway, which operates a Speedway Gas Station located

at 6241 S. Cass Ave. in Westmont.

Madigan and Berlin are asking the court to require that Speedway remain closed, perform air monitoring at any affected homes in and around the sanitary sewer system and investigate and address any contamination from the gasoline release.

The Speedway station includes six underground storage tanks, four of which are 10,000-gallon gasoline tanks that are located adjacent to a county sanitary sewer system. According to Madigan’s and Berlin’s complaint, Speedway

officials identified signs of a potential leak in October.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency referred the case to the Attorney General’s Office for prosecution after an Oct. 20 explosion at the Knoll Condominiums just over a mile away from the station resulted in injury to a resident.

All 150 units had to be evacuated.

A total of 10 explosions occurred in nearby residential buildings and along the sewer line that injured at least three people. In addition to the evacuation at the Knoll Condominiums, approximately six other homes were evacuated. Additionally, pressure from gasoline vapors in the sanitary sewer system caused 14 manhole covers along the sewer line to be blown off.

“The explosions due to gasoline leaks at the Speedway station caused significant damage and disruption to people in the community,” Madigan said. “Today’s complaint and injunction requires Speedway to remain closed until it can assure the state that it has cleaned up, determined and remedied the causes, and can ensure the safety of its operations.”

Gasoline is highly flammable and can migrate through soil and sewer systems into basements, crawl space cracks and pipes to create inhalation and explosion hazards. Officials believe the Knoll Condominiums explosion was the result of gasoline vapors being ignited by a laundry dryer. Residents of 12 units are still under evacu-

ation orders that could last for months.

Following the explosions, Speedway emptied the leaking storage tank and removed the affected tank and remaining underground storage tanks. In the complaint, Madigan and Berlin ask the court to require Speedway to take steps to control any gasoline released at the site and to continue working to evaluate and remediate any soil or groundwater contamination. The lawsuit also asks for civil penalties.

Assistant Attorneys General Gerald Karr, Angad Nagra and Ellen O’Laughlin are handling the case for Madigan’s Environmental Bureau. Assistant State’s Attorney Lisa Smith is handling the case for the DuPage County State’s Attorney.

Nibbling away at the Affordable Care Act

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market

As annual enrollment for Obamacare insurance approaches on November 1, the law itself and the people who have come to depend on it for health coverage are both facing an uncertain future.

President Trump’s recent executive actions affect the complicated insurance mechanics of the Affordable Care Act, and they haven’t been well explained in the news media. This column will explain how those changes affect you.

Congress has tried but has not been able to “repeal and replace” the law that has brought health insurance to some 10 million Americans who buy insurance on the state shopping exchanges and about 10 million more who gained access through Medicaid expansion.

The failure of Congress to pass the “repeal and replace” legislation did not mean, though, that the law would remain intact.

In mid-October President Trump’s executive action hollowed out a big chunk of the ACA, throwing insurance marketplaces into a tizzy and possibly resulting in higher prices and less coverage for many. In the end, the president’s actions may succeed in gutting the law that has divided so many Americans.

To understand this, let’s take a step back. Legislators who wrote the law knew that a big reason people did not buy health insurance was cost. Most middle class families without employer coverage struggled to pay the premiums in the so-called individual market where they had to shop. Those at the bottom of the income ladder either qualified for Medicaid or did without insurance. About 44 million Americans did not have insurance when the law took effect four years ago.

The ACA tried to make it easier to buy coverage, and Congress did that in

It required insurers to cover all people - sick or well - who applied for coverage in the individual market and offered two kinds of subsidies to help those with lower incomes.

One comes in the form of tax credits the government advances to shoppers who buy Obamacare - compliant policies that meet certain rules and regulations, such as offering 10 essential benefits. Prescription drug coverage is one.

Those subsidies are based on a family’s income and phase out when a family’s income exceeds 400 percent of the federal poverty level or about $98,000 for a family of four and $48,000 for a single person. People with lower incomes receive the largest subsidies.

Those tax credit subsidies are not affected by Trump’s order.

The other subsidy is called a costsharing subsidy, sometimes referred to as a CSR and aimed at Americans whose incomes are at or below 250 percent of poverty, about $62,000 for a family of four and $30,000 for an individual. They reduce the amount of out-of-pocket spending for people who get them. Those who qualify pay less for the coinsurance, deductibles and copayments a policy may require.

These are the subsidies on the chopping block. The president said the government will not continue funding

them which means the government simply will not pay insurance companies for reducing the out-of-pocket costs to policyholders. Policyholders will still get the subsidies unless Congress changes the law. Insurers will have to swallow the losses, at least for now.

If you get those subsidies, you’re not off the hook, though. Insurance companies anticipated that the president would axe the subsidies and they increased their premiums for most or all Obamacare policies, including the silver plans, the ones people must buy to receive the extra help with cost sharing.

The Congressional Budget Office just projected that premiums before the tax credits are applied would increase on average by about 20 percent.

In some states average rate increases have been much higher.

So who will be hurt the most by the Trump administration’s latest move which some experts argue undermines the stability of the health law?

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market.

People with incomes under 400 percent of poverty will still receive their tax credits, which will reduce their higher premiums, and they will continue to get their CSRs. Those in the individual market who have higher incomes and receive no tax credits to lower their premiums will feel the most pain. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that 44 percent of buyers in the Obamacare market did not qualify for tax credits.

That’s almost 7 million people.

“Ironically, it is these unsubsidized folks who have complained the loudest about Obamacare’s big premiums and deductibles,” says Washington D.C. insurance consultant Robert Laszewski. “They will now have even more to complain about.”

The administration wants to let them buy cheaper policies that cover far less than Obamacare insurance. White announces repaired, digitized World War I Illinois National Guard online Marks 100th anniversary World War I Secretary of State and State Archivist Jesse White today announced that in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of America’s participation in World War I, the Illinois State Archives has repaired and digitized 57 maps used by the Illinois National Guard during the war. The maps may be viewed by the public in the Illinois Digital Archives found here: h t t p : / / w w w. i d a i l l i n o i s . org/cdm/search/collection/ p16614coll33/page/1 “More than 350,000 Illinois residents served in the American military during World War I and more than 5,000 died,” said White. “It is important that we as a state take

the time to remember their sacrifices and honor their efforts.”

The State Archives has military topographical maps that show activities in France during World War I. These maps show terrain exercises, the enemy order of battle and the locations of trenches, land mines, railroads, supply dumps and the front lines. Also included with this group of materials is a rare German poster showing the locations of ships sunk by German submarines in British waters.

White, who served in the U.S. Army and the Illinois National Guard and Reserve, said the maps show the importance of Illinois’ contribution to the war effort.

These sets of maps feature the 33rd division of the Illinois National Guard, which was the only distinctly Illinois division that saw active service in France during the war. The United States entered

the war on April 6, 1917 and, unlike previous wars, most soldiers did not serve in units specific to their home states. The war ended on November 11, 1918 a date now commemorated as Veteran’s Day in the United States.

In addition, the Archives has daily correspondence of battlefield orders (October-November 1918) and approximately 150 post-war enemy intelligence and location maps which show the day to day battle lines from October 1, 1918 to shortly after the end of the war.

These maps show enemy activities such as shelling, air plane missions and gas attacks.

Woodridge Police releases Halloween enforcement numbers Enforcement crackdown took place from Friday, Oct. 27, through the earlymorning hours of Tuesday, Nov. 1 The Woodridge Police Department made 32 traffic stops and issued 22 speeding tickets, four operating uninsured vehicle tickets, four unlawful use of electronic communication device tickets, and one miscellaneous citation during the recent Halloween enforcement effort. Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this effort to save lives by getting impaired drivers off the roads and more people buckled up during Halloween.

The enforcement crackdown took place from Friday, Oct. 27, through the early-morning hours of Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Extra emphasis was placed on enforcement during late-night hours, when statistics show the

most unbuckled and impaired driving fatalities occur.

The recent law enforcement crackdown was made possible by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and is part of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.

PEORIA — Last Saturday at the IHSA 3A boys cross country championships, a much anticipated dual between the top two teams in the state - Downers Grove North and Neuqua Valley - never materialized.

On a foggy, overcast day, North easily won their first state title, placing their five scoring runners in the top 27, to easily outdistance the Wildcats 73-149.

North took control of the race early with all five runners up front from the start. It never changed the remainder of the race and the Trojans reversed the placing from a year ago

when Neuqua beat the Trojans.

“We knew it was going to be a battle with Neuqua, it’s been that way for awhile, but today is special,” North coach John Sipple said. “It’s only the second male state title in school history.

Neuqua is a quality program and it’s been a battle all season, but today was our day.”

It was only the second boys title in school history, following the 2004 8A football title.

The Trojans only had a 17 second split between their top five runners, with four earning AllState honors by placing in the top 25.

Jacob Ridderhoff lead the Trojans with an eighth place finish (14:36) over the three-mile course and was followed closely

by fellow seniors Nick Chudzik in 19th (14:44) and Miles Christensen in 21st (14:46).

Junior Jack Roberts was 22nd (14:47) and senior Sam McColl finished 27th (14:53) to secure the title.

“We have worked very hard this season after finishing second last year to Neuqua,” Ridderhoff said. “They are a really tough team, but we ran well today. It’s really exciting to be the champions, it was a fast race today, especially with the conditions.”

Downers Grove South finished 10th in the team race and had one all-stater in senior Stephen Pipilas who placed 24th in 14:52.

The Mustangs also had senior Akhil Ghosh finish 49th (15:04),

Eddie Siuda, a junior, in 80th (15:20), sophomore John Henegan placed 99th (15:28) and junior Nick Dziedzic was 127th (15:35).

On the girls side, South was fifth, only one point out of fourth and missing third by just 10 points. The Mustangs scored 194 points. Naperville North won the team title with 87 points, with Lyons Township third with 184 and Wheaton-Warrenville South fourth with 193.

South sophomore Brenna Cohoon gained all-state accolades with her 19th place finish in 17:08. She was followed by junior Melissa Weidner in 52nd (17:51), sophomores Kennedy Warden in 55th (17:52) and Erin Reidy placed 62nd (17:54).

Becky Versaskas, a junior was 67th (17:55).

“The race was fast today and I’m pleased with the performance,” Cohoon said. “We have everyone back and this will really help with the experience for next season.”

Benet will also return everyone next year and had four freshmen among their top five placing eleventh as a team with 327 points.

Junior Mae Tully led the Redwings with a 43rd place finish in 17:47. She was followed by the freshmen group of Kelly Andrews 69th (17:56), Emily Spellman in 71st (17:58), Elizabeth Camic in 106th (18:15) and Meaghan Andrews placed 135th (1828).

North volleyball season ends in sectional final

The Clare Delaplane Era has ended but a new age may have begun for the Downers Grove North volleyball program.

Delaplane, a four-year standout outside hitter, finished her high school career by leading all players with 11 kills at Friday’s Class 4A Geneva Supersectional, but St. Charles North ended the Trojans’ stirring playoff run with a 17-25, 25-16, 25-15 victory.

The North Stars (37-3) extended their winning streak to 25 games in advancing to the state semifinals for the first time. The Trojans, who were the last team to beat St. Charles North, came up one set short of clinching the third state trophy in program history.

“There’s not much to say other

than kudos to St. Charles North,” Downers North coach Mark Wasik said. “They just seemed to have the number for us in anything we did. They played great.”

So did Delaplane, who led the Trojans (27-13) to their first sectional championship since 1988.

She had a match-high 13 kills in Wednesday’s thrilling 25-15, 2025, 25-23 win over host Glenbard West at the Glenbard West Sectional final.

Delaplane will continue her career at Villanova but she left a lasting mark at Downers North.

“It was really amazing for our team to get to this point,” Delaplane said. “We really wanted to win this game. I’m just really proud of this team and I know they’re going to do so well next year.”

There is reason to think Delaplane is right about that.

She and back row player Madi

Chudzik are the only seniors on a young team packed with talent.

Sophomore setter Elizabeth Dunlap was outstanding, spreading 34 assists among seven hitters in the win over Glenbard West.

She added 13 assists and seven service points against St. Charles North.

“It’s so cool,” Dunlap said after the Glenbard West game. “I never thought we would make it this far but with all of our hard work, it was worth it. I’m so happy and excited right now.”

The Trojans transformed from a team that went 20-17 a year ago into one that competed well against one of the toughest schedules around. This may not have been the most talented team Wasik has coached but it has camaraderie and a great work ethic.

“We have a really strong starting core,” Downers North outside

hitter Maddie Degiorgio said.

“We had a really good time (this year). We play better when we’re loose so when we’re all together we play really well.”

Degiorgio had six kills against Glenbard West and three against St. Charles North, a senior-dominated team which erased a 5-4 deficit in the second set and then used a 15-3 run in the third set to put the game away.

Degiorgio and fellow junior Margaret Mahlke give the Trojans two experienced outside hitters, while junior middle hitters Payton Wendt and Jade Casper also will be back. All four stand at least 5-foot-10. Also returning will be junior libero Kessie Olekanma, who played a vital role this season.

“We’re still a relatively young team,” Wasik said Saturday. “I think at times that showed up tonight just from a ball control

standpoint, from a stay-calm standpoint. We weren’t able to necessarily do that tonight.

“Given the core that comes back, we’re excited. I’m going to enjoy the accomplishments of this team, but the tone has been set and it starts with these seniors. It will be fun.”

Delaplane had loads of fun in her final prep season, which included a West Suburban Conference Silver Division championship with a 6-0 record and the school’s first regional title since 2013.

“I think (the success was a result of ) two things,” Delaplane said. “One, we just really bonded over the season. We’re all really good friends off the court.

“And the other thing was we worked really hard in practice.

The individual growth over the season was amazing to see. I’m just really proud of all the girls.”

Benet defeats unbeaten Rockton Hononegah

Four field goals and a punt doesn’t sound like much of an offensive attack, but Benet Academy’s defense made sure it was more than enough.

The Redwings’ 26-0 dispatching of previously-unbeaten Rockton Hononegah in the Class 7A playoffs at Benedictine University Saturday night was a defensive gem of the highest level.

The Indians came to Lisle with a 10-0 record and left with just six first downs—only one after halftime. Hononegah had just one play on the night longer than 8 yards, and that came in the first quarter. The Redwings picked off two passes, sacked Indians quarterback Ryan Van Schelven five times and limited the opponents to just 98 total yards.

“I trust our guys to put together a great game plan,” said Benet coach Pat New. “I thought we made a couple of adjustments on defense, and on offense, we just went a little quicker. Our offensive linemen said we could pick up the pace a little.”

The victory pushes Benet to the Class 7A quarterfinals at LincolnWay Central this weekend. The Redwings, who made it to the 7A semifinals a year ago before losing to eventual state champion East St. Louis, are anxious for a return to the final four. “I told our kids I want to take one more step this year,” New said.

The defense, led by Jacob Snell, Joseph Kipp, John Benish and Matthew Kipp across the front and Michael Wymer, Devin Peterson and Connor Burke at linebacker, kept the Indians from being able to sustain their running game, and the defensive backfield of Jack Cooney, Connor Reid, Ben Cooney and Billy Lawler provided the coverage against Hononegah’s passing attack.

The Indians didn’t pass midfield at any point in the game, and the field position battle slowly wore down the visitors. Benet wasn’t able to muster much more in the first half, however, and it looked like Victor Karam’s 29yard field goal in the first quarter would hold up until intermis-

sion. That’s when a punt by Colin Gillespie was downed at the Hononegah 1 yard line with 3:43 to go in the half, and that play actually turned the tide for the Redwings.

The Benet defense held, and the Redwings took over after the punt at the Hononegah 32. Junior Bennett Hickey, who gained 142 yards on 21 carries, dove to the 22 on third-and-2 to keep the drive alive, then caught a screen pass from Gillespie for 14 yards to get a first-and-goal. On third down, Gillespie faked to Hickey, rolled right and found Jack Eschenbach on a 3-yard scoring play with 38 second until halftime. It was 10-0, and that was more than enough on a night when Benet’s defense was in complete control.

In the second half, the Redwings defense forced four straight 3-and-outs, and the Redwings scored on four straight possessions. The quicker offensive pace got Gillespie into a little better passing rhythm, and that helped set up Hickey’s 15-yard scoring run early in the third period to push the lead to 17-0.

The rest of the night belonged to the defense and to Karam, who hit field goals from 22, 41 and 29 yards on the next three possessions. The 41-yard attempt hit the crossbar and — there is no other way to put it — caromed over for the points.

Benet volleyball season comes to an end against Minooka

After winning a sectional title for five straight seasons, Benet Academy missed the sectional title for the second-straight season, this year falling to Minooka, the eventual state qualifier, in the title match of the Waubonsie Valley Sectional.

The Redwings fell 25-20, 25-20 to the Indians.

“It is the most unique team we have seen all year. It is a totally different style. You know what they are going to do – you just can’t stop it,” Benet coach Brad Baker said of Minooka. “We played a completely different defense than we had played all year, just to get to different depths and get to different angles. You have one day to practice it and that part is not easy. We gave kids free releases.

We were just releasing our libero into the corner and releasing our middle back to certain spots in hopes we could get deep enough and get to some of those balls.

“The balls are coming so fast and it is such a fast tempo and if they run perfect, the balls are coming so fast, you can’t get to where you need to get to. You can say block them, but a lot of those shots, they are hitting over our kids.”

In the opening game, Minooka jumped out to a 7-1 lead and despite taking a lead late, Benet could not close that gap.

“It was a credit to our girls to come back. They have the ability to side out at such a high rate that when they are siding out, we cannot side out at that rate,” Baker said. “Our best ball doesn’t side out at their best ball rate – it just doesn’t. So, we have to slow

We wanted to put pressure on them and they reacted great under pressure.”

Baker said that while the Redwings are exiting without a sectional title again this season, the year was not a loss for the team.

This was our toughest regular season we have maybe ever had. We played Minooka, played Marist twice, McAuley – especial-

ly the last month of the season, we were constantly playing to the top five teams in the state and then we come into the postseason and it was not easy,” he said.

“This was a year that we needed to mentally be prepared and we rely on our seniors to keep them prepared and I think they did a great job and hopefully that carries over. We have a lot of kids coming back and part of the seniors job is – are you getting the kids ready for next year? And we will find out.”

Get help registering for health insurance Open Enrollment is here. This is the time of year to register for health insurance benefits through the HealthCare.gov website, also known as the Health Insurance Marketplace.

The DuPage County Health Department is encouraging residents to, ‘Follow Your Dreams, Choose Your Health Plan’, and will offer review and renew workshops throughout DuPage County. Specially-trained Community Health Workers will provide information and enrollment assistance.

If you do not have insurance through an employer, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or a source providing qualifying health insurance, you have from November 1 through December 15 to enroll in a health insurance plan. Anyone who registered for insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace in the past, must review and renew their current health insurance plan during Open Enrollment.

By law, each health insurance plan must cover, at a minimum, essential health benefits, includ-

ing hospitalizations, doctor visits, and prescription medicine. Financial assistance is still available to help lower costs of insurance for individuals meeting the income eligibility criteria.

DuPage County residents are asked to call (630) 221-7766 to make an appointment to attend a workshop, or for more information.

When you apply for coverage in the Health Insurance Marketplace, you will need to provide some information about you and your household, including income, any insurance you currently have, and some additional items.

1. Employer and income information for every member of your household who needs coverage (For example, from pay stubs or W-2 forms - Wage and Tax Statements) Financial assistance to pay for coverage is only offered to individuals with taxable income.

2. Policy numbers for any current health insurance plans covering members of your household.

3. Your Social Security number.

4. Your email account and login information.
