Community House honors Tomanovich family Tomanovichs’ involvement with The Community House began five years ago through the annual Autism Walk The Community House champions a vibrant and caring community. We stand for the power of neighbors joining with neighbors.

The response from friends and neighbors who volunteer to carry out our mission across such areas as Charlie’s Gift, Willowbrook Corner, Jodie Harrison Basketball, Flag Football, and other areas has been overwhelming.

Hundreds of residents lock arms to make this a better, stronger community every year dedicating their precious gifts of time and talent.

ter Service Award, named after Life Trustee Kathy Sylvester, was established over 20 years ago and honors volunteers who exemplify her spirit of uniting service and leadership for the betterment of the community through services provided by The Community House.

by Acting Executive Director Brad Warren and Director of Volunteer Services Marcie McGonagle at a Volunteer Reception Event at The Community House.

with The Community House began five years ago through the annual Autism Walk and Walker School where Deanne Tomanovich works as a special education teacher.

Deanne began promoting the walk within the school which triggered interest in her family to do more to help children diagnosed with autism. Deanne and Alex To-

manovich’s son Noah, a student at Downers Grove South High school, is autistic but very social.

“We wanted to give Noah something that he can take ownership over and he has, he looks forward to doing it every year,” stated Deanne Tomanovich. Noah has spread the word through his endearing personality and infectious laugh.

With the help of family, friends and the community, their reach has grown bigger each and every year.

Alex Tomanovich began working with the walk’s planning committee.

He co-chaired the walk in 2013 and has served annually as an advisor. Through their walk efforts, the Tomanovich family has contributed significant support to The

Community House and Charlie’s Gift Center for Autism and Related Disorders.

Because of their own experiences, the Tomanovich family has become tireless advocates for The Community House, Charlie’s Gift and most importantly children and families with autism and autism spectrum disorder.

Every year, The Community House receives support from over 600 volunteers who spend over 9890 hours serving our community.

We are grateful for this outpouring of support and welcome others to get involved in volunteering.

PACE approves 1st major fare hike in 6 years Riders will have to pay more per ride and per transfer, passes remain same

The PACE suburban bus transit agency’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve a budget that included the first major fare hike since 2009.

Whether they’re using regular routes, premium routes, dial-aride services or paratransit services, riders will have to pay more per ride and per transfer. The cost of PACE and PACE /CTA passes remains the same. As previously reported by the Bugle, the fare increase is one of several steps the transit agency is taking to make up for funding shortfall.

Agency spokesperson Maggie Daly-Skogsbakken told this newspaper that, while PACE understood that fare increase could hurt riders, especially paratransit riders, it was important for the transit agency to maintain its services and keep its capital projects on track. Without it, she said, PACE’s ridership might suffer in the long run.

On Jan. 1, 2018, the cash fares for regular routes will go up from $2 to $2.25, while Ventra card fares will go up from $1.57 to $2. The increase will be more dramatic for premium routes, going up from $4 to $4.50. Premium routes include commuter shuttles, a summer shuttle service to Six Flags Great America, and routes that link riders to Wrigley Field, Soldier Field and Guaranteed Rate Field on game days. Express shuttle routes 755 and 855 serve Plainfield, while routes 850 and 851 serve Bolingbrook. Route 768 and Route 775 provide express service to Soldier Field and Guaranteed Rate Field from Bolingbrook.

For the first time in recent history, the cost of transferring between routes will increase as well.

The regular transfers will increase from $0.25 to $0.30. The transfers between buses serving Joliet will remain free.

This is the time of year to register for health insurance benefits through the HealthCare. gov website, also known as the Health Insurance Marketplace.

The DuPage County Health Department is encouraging residents to, ‘Follow Your Dreams, Choose Your

Health Plan’, and will offer review and renew workshops throughout DuPage County. Specially-trained Community Health Workers will provide information and enrollment assistance.

If you do not have insurance through an employer, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or a source providing qualifying health insurance, you have from November 1 through December 15 to enroll in a health insurance plan.

Anyone who registered for insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace in the past, must review and renew their current health insurance

plan during Open Enrollment.

By law, each health insurance plan must cover, at a minimum, essential health benefits, including hospitalizations, doctor visits, and prescription medicine.

Financial assistance is still available to help lower costs of insurance for individuals meeting the income eligibility criteria.

It is alleged that Navarro and his victim were both waiting at an intersection to turn left with Navarro in front of his victim.

It is alleged that the victim went around Navarro at the intersection and proceeded to drive away.

It is further alleged that Navarro then followed the victim and began tailgating him. It is further alleged that Navarro then pulled his vehicle into the oncoming traffic lane next to the driver’s side of his victim’s car and fired his gun at his victim’s car through the front passenger side of his vehicle.

“The outrageous conduct alleged against Mr. Navarro is extremely serious and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “In addition to allegedly shooting at another motorist, his

alleged actions also endangered the life not only of the passengers in his vehicle but also the lives of the motoring public.

Thankfully, the victim in this shooting is expected to recover from his injuries.

DuPage County State’s Attorney would like to remind the public once again that if you find yourself involved in a traffic altercation, stay calm and don’t let your emotions get the better of you and if necessary, call 9-1-1.

After a loss to Marist on Oct. 13, Benet Academy found itself sitting at 5-3, with its second quarterback of the season and coach Pat New was wondering if the team’s preseason motto was a “This is what we fought for and it is kind of cool that it happened,” New said. “There was one point in the year, I thought we might be 3-6 and I would have looked foolish with that motto, but it worked out.

“We have been here before and we are not surprised – this is what we were fighting for.”

The No. 17 seed Redwings earned the spot in the IHSA Class 7A state semifinals with a 14-10 win over No. 9 Lincoln-Way Central.

After scoring on its opening drive of the game, Benet saw its offense sputter with fumbles and dropped passes – but while

the offense was getting back in a groove, the defense clamped down on a Central (10-2) team that had averaged 35.3 points per game this season.

North Central headed to postseason the 2017 NCAA Division III Football Championship on Saturday. The Division III Football Championship Committee released this year’s 32-team playoff field Sunday.

The Cardinals (9-1) are in the field for the 10th time in their history, clinching the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin’s (CCIW ) automatic bid with a 49-7 victory at Elmhurst College. North Central claimed a share of its 13th CCIW Cham-

pionship.

The Cardinals are 11-9 overall in the Division III Championship, including a 7-4 record in postseason games at home.

North Central has won its firstround game in its last eight appearances.

Saint John’s (9-1) received a provisional bid to the championship after finishing 7-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play this season. The Johnnies, who

closed the regular season on Saturday with a 10-3 win over Concordia College-Moorhead (Minnesota), have made the field in each of the past three years. Saint John’s won Division III national titles in 1976 and 2003. This will be the first football meeting between Saint John’s and North Central.

Saturday’s kickoff at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 noon. More information, including ticket prices, will

In its final game of the regular season, North Central earned it’s fourth consecutive victory and perhaps its most complete mastery yet, as the Cardinals visited Elmhurst College on Saturday and never let the Bluejays up for air in a 49-7 triumph at Langhorst Field.

North Central (9-1, 7-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) secured the 13th CCIW Championship in the program’s history with the win, sharing this year’s title with Illinois Wesleyan University. By virtue of the Cardinals’ 26-13 victory over IWU on Sept.16, North Central receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Football Championship, which begins next week.

The visitors drove 65 yards in eight plays on the game’s opening possession and scored on Austin Breunig’s 10-yard run.

Rental property not part of Baby Step 2 Pay off primary home before taking care of rental properties DEAR DAVE, I have a rental property that I still owe some money on, and I’ve just begun Baby Step 2 of your plan. Should rental property debt be included in the debt snowball?

MATT DEAR MATT, No, it shouldn’t. Baby Step 2 of my plan is where you use the debt snowball to pay off all debt — from smallest to largest — except for your home. This, of course, comes after Baby Step 1, in which you save up $1,000 for a beginner emergency fund. I would include rental properties in the “home” category, and I urge people to get serious about paying off their homes a little further down the road in Baby

Step 6.

To fill in the gaps, Baby Step 3 is going back and fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses.

Baby Step 4 is investing 15 percent of your household income in Roth IRAs and other pre-tax retirement plans, and Baby Step 5 means setting aside college

money for the kids. Baby Step 6 is where you pay off your home, including any rental properties that weren’t already paid for in cash, and Baby Step 7 is when you relax, build wealth, and give.

If it were me, I would pay off my primary home before taking care of the rental properties.

That’s simply a risk management perspective. However, if you owe just $20,000 on your rental property but still have a $3 million mortgage on your residence, you might go ahead and quickly knock out the rental property first.
