DuPagePads opens 12 more Supportive Housing apartments DuPagePads is recognized in DuPage County as the largest provider of Supportive Housing, now with 94 apartment units Recently, DuPagePads received funding for 12 new Supportive Housing apartment units, providing the opportunity to transform the lives of 12 chronically homeless individuals. These apartments not only give people a place to call “home,” but saves taxpayer dollars.

DuPagePads is recognized in DuPage County as the largest provider of Supportive Housing, now with 94 apartment units, for families and individuals who have been homeless for a year or longer and have a documented disability such as mental illness, physical disability or substance abuse.

This housing not only provides safety and stability, but tenants also receive ongoing case management which keeps them focused on their life goals, improving their health, obtaining financially security and becoming productive members of their community.

Successful at ending homelessness, 89 percent of Supportive Housing tenants have been in their housing for a year or longer. With clients no longer cycling through emergency rooms, detox centers and prisons, a cost savings to the medical, mental health, substance abuse and criminal justice systems, making communities healthier and safer. Calculations show that last year these units saved taxpayers over $2.5 million alone, all while improving participants’ health.

To help turn these apartments into homes, service clubs, congre-

gations and local businesses came together to furnish the units.

The Assistance League of Chicagoland West supplied all 12 apartments with kitchen sets which included glassware, pots, pans, cooking utensils, cleaning supplies, a cookbook and small appliances like coffee pots and crockpots, all brand new. BMO Harris Bank donated $2,000 worth of bathroom supplies and accessories for the new apartments and Serta Simmons Bedding in Hoffman Estates, donated 12 new mattresses and 7 new box springs, providing a comfortable and relaxing place for clients to sleep.

Woodridge woman killed in murder-suicide A Woodridge woman was apparently shot and killed during what became a murder-suicide in Plainfield on Saturday, said Plainfield police. Elaine M. Zene, 65, of Woodridge, was shot at approximately noon in the parking lot of a Jewel-Osco, 13460 S. Route 59. She was transported to AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Bolingbrook, where she was pronounced dead at 1:08 p.m.

Witnesses told police the gunman, de-

scribed as an older male had fled in a silver car with out-of-state license plates.

At 1:01 p.m. Plainfield police were then called to 24100 block of Walnut Circle for a welfare check on Raymond Zene, 72, after a relative reported receiving a “disturbing text.”

Upon arrival on Walnut Circle, Plainfield police officers tried to make contact with Zene but heard a gunshot from inside the closed garage. Officers set up a perimeter

and contacted the Joliet Police Department’s Special Operations Squad (SOS) and other local law enforcement agencies for mutual aid/support. Once Joliet Police Department’s SOS was in place and surrounding residents had been evacuated, the garage door to the residence was breached. A police robot equipped with cameras was sent into the garage where a male was observed not moving, seated in the driver’s seat of a silver vehicle

with out-of-state license plates.

The male, later identified as Zene, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A search warrant was executed on the residence later in the evening by the Plainfield. According to court records Elaine Zene filed for divorce from Raymond Zene in April 2016. They were scheduled to appear in court this week for ongoing divorce proceedings.

From November 17 through January 1, 50 acres of the Arboretum’s majestic trees will glow in mesmerizing hues of blue, green, purple, and magenta. Along the wooded one-mile path, visitors will discover a series of experiences that encourage them to see trees in a different light. Visitors can see a grove of hemlock trees’ color transform from green to technicolor hues, and catch a glimpse of trees that appear to be gently breathing.

Additionally, visitors can hug a tree and watch it respond or enjoy a dazzling show of lights that appear to dance in the trees in time to music.

New for 2017 This year’s event includes new features to wow event-goers, including a new way to experience Illumination! Become part of the Illumination experience by wearing programmed interactive pendants that light up in sync with the event. Also new this year will be timed admission tickets, allowing visitors to enter every half hour throughout the event.

Three concession tents scattered throughout the trail will feature snacks and hot beverages, including gourmet hot chocolate and visitors can stop in The Morton Arboretum’s Ginkgo Restaurant, offering a full dinner menu every night of Illumination. For this family, pro-life viewpoint became a question of life & death Wouldn’t it be grand if people were more compassionate in other instances?

BY MARY SANCHEZ TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY A young mother of five, a survivor of recent cancer surgery, develops a new tumor - and discovers she is pregnant. The cancer is aggressive; to survive she needs chemotherapy, but that would buy only a few years more of life, if that. And it will kill the baby she is carrying.

What should she do?

What Carrie DeKlyen and her husband, a Michigan couple who faced this dilemma, decided has been the topic of much public commentary, most of it empathetic but some of it shallow and cruel.

Carrie DeKlyen chose not to undergo chemo, and she is now dead. Her child, named Life Lynn DeKlyen, was born just shy of 25 weeks after conception and died two weeks after her mother on September 20. A baby is considered full term around 39 weeks. Despite exemplary efforts by doctors, and being tagged as a “miracle baby” by media nationwide, Life didn’t have very good odds.

She weighed only 1 pound, 4 ounces at birth. In early September, Baby Life was delivered by C-section as her mother lay unconscious from a stroke brought on by her inoperable brain tumor. Carrie, 37 years old, left five other children, ranging in age from 2 to 18 years old.

Social media couldn’t hold back. What launched was almost a parlor game of “What would you do?”

Was Life’s mother selfish to deny her other five children their mother? Or was she a saint for

giving her baby a chance at life?

How about she was a mother facing a horrible decision that you wouldn’t wish upon anyone?

That’s fair.

Today, social media and internet discussion threads allow everybody to be a moral philosopher, although many don’t feel the obligation to be fair or empathetic or particularly rigorous.

The DeKlyens made their difficult choice in a manner consistent with their view that life starts at conception.

Abortion was never an option.

This view was obviously informed by the couple’s faith, and even their choice of name - “Life” - suggests perhaps a statement of principle, a political stand.

After the baby’s death, some remarked that the story would no longer resonate as a shining example of the pro-life ethos.

The cringeworthy rationale was that the family no longer had the child to hold up as an emblem of the cause.

Wrong. Carrie DeKlyen is still a great example of a woman choosing life for her child.

Others argued that the family’s faith was misplaced; God didn’t save the baby.

Yes, the family made religiously guided decisions.

The widowed father has been consistently quoted with the family’s view that God wanted them to choose the baby’s life over that of the mother.

“We’re pro-life,” Nick DeKlyen told the Detroit Free Press.

“Under no circumstance do we believe you should take a child’s life. (Carrie) sacrificed her life for the child.”

After the baby’s birth, Nick DeKlyen also made the decision that his wife had suffered enough and asked that her feeding tube and breathing machine be disconnected. She died soon after. Others with a more stringent views about

what constitutes life might have argued against that decision.

The fact that the family sold sweatshirts to raise money and used an internet crowdfunding site led to some tut-tutting that the family was taking pecuniary advantage of their plight.

However, despite the sanctimony of some internet commentators, most who contemplated the family’s tragedy were sympathetic.

People saw the mother as someone of faith and related. Or they viewed her as a mother, or as half of a loving marriage, or as a cancer patient, and related.

Wouldn’t it be grand if people were more compassionate in other instances as well? Yes, people questioned the decision to keep the baby. But what you didn’t hear was the sort of condemnation that befalls other women who, like her, have a lot of children, mounting hospital bills and a husband who isn’t able to provide.

Nick DeKlyen is out of work.

He’d reportedly quit work during all of this distress to be available to his family, also completely understandable.

People read these kinds of stories with different needs and agendas. Some want miracles.

Some want hope. And, in their lesser moments, some want to validate their beliefs on such matters as abortion, the proper place of faith in public policy and the right way to have a family.

But if we read and hear these stories, putting aside our egodriven need to be right, we recognize simply what they are: incredibly difficult decisions that families ultimately have to make alone, using their own understanding of what is right.

And it’s not for any of us to pass judgment.

Veterans Expo and Blood Drive veterans often face unique challenges when they return from active duty, so I am proud to once again be partnering with a few of my legislative colleagues for a free veterans expo and blood drive on Saturday, November 4. The event will bring together 30 agencies that can provide assistance and address their specific needs. This year’s expo will take place from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 80, 4000 Saratoga Avenue in Downers Grove.

Experts from across the state will be available to inform the veteran attendees and their loved ones of important resources and services available to them. Just a few of the important services that will be available at the expo include flu shots, pneumonia shots, blood pressure screenings, counseling and TDAP, passport application, student assistance and job opportunities. Blood donations will be taken at the event from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. If interested in donating blood, veterans or their loved ones are

Rexnord expansion groundbreaking It was my pleasure earlier this month to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for Rexnord Industries, which is building a new manufacturing facility and aerospace headquarters in Downers Grove. The new 248,000 square-foot facility will be located near its existing home in the Ellsworth Business Park. Construction is expected to be complete in 2019, and once the new building is finished the old building will be redeveloped into parking for the company’s 310 employees.

“Spooktacular Saturday” in draws large crowd The weather was perfect for this year’s “Spooktacular Saturday,” recently held in Downers Grove. The annual event included the Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence

(HGNA) pancake breakfast, the Downers Grove Historical Society Living Cemetery, and the Halloween window painting sponsored by the Rotary Club of Downers Grove.

The celebration continued this past weekend with the Downers Grove Lions Club costume parade and trick-or-treating at downtown businesses.

HGNA grew out of parent workshops on girl bullying and adolescent development in 2004 and 2005. It is a non-profit organization devoted to providing children and their parents the tools needed to navigate adolescence with confidence, resilience and kindness. HGNA is a leading provider of educational and skill-building programs, events and resources offered in collaboration with our schools and communities.

“Principal for a Day” at Herrick Middle School I had an opportunity to step into the shoes of a school principal and experience a day in the life of a top school administrator at Herrick Middle School. The “Principal for a Day” program is offered through the Illinois Principals Association, and the experience provided me with a unique glimpse into the lives

that principals live in their schools every day.

The “Principal for a Day” program, in place since 2004, is a statewide initiative to provide state and federal elected officials with an opportunity to observe, interact, and serve as an administrator in schools within their legislative districts. I had some great conversations with staff members and enjoyed talking with students about government and the importance of being an involved citizen. Thank you to Principal Mr. Matt Neustadt, and the students and staff of Herrick Middle School for a wonderful experience.

ROLL Benet Academy earns win in opening round of playoffs

DES PLAINES — Coming off a run to the Class 7A state semifinals in 2016 and a six-win regular season that included three losses to postseason teams, Benet Academy faced a road challenge to start their postseason and didn’t blink.

They traveled to Maine West on Friday night and established their gameplan on both sides of the ball early and never looked back on their way to a 35-13 victory.

After forcing a three-and-out on the game’s first possession, Benet turned to the ground immediately and Ben Hickey broke off a 49-yard run on their first play from scrimmage. Five plays later, it was sophomore quarterback Colin Gillespie who hit paydirt on a 4-yard scoring run.

“It was huge. We knew [Maine West] hadn’t been here since 2002 and they were pretty fired up.”

Benet coach Pat New said. “We knew we had to establish the tone early and we really tried to establish our highest-percentage plays

early on to get it going.”

The Redwings would take that 7-0 lead to the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 14 when Gillespie found Ben Cooney on a screen for a 50-yard touchdown. The extra point from Victor Caram was good and he’d go on to make 5-of-5 PATs. A dynamic two-way player, Cooney made plays on both sides of the ball and made an impact in the return game for Benet.

Cooney had 4 catches for 72 yards and the touchdown to go along with 20 yards rushing and a fumble recovery on defense.

After a Connor Burke interception and a 44-yard Gillespie touchdown run made it 21-0, Maine West got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when George Markakis hit Matt Sentgen for an 8-yard touchdown.

On the next possession, it looked like the Warriors would make a game of it when Matt Litas intercepted a Gillespie pass and returned it 77 yards deep into Benet territory only to have the re-

Downers North takes regional title

Downers Grove North junior Payton Wendt enjoyed one of the best games of her volleyball career Thursday night and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

The 6-foot middle hitter had four solo blocks and three kills, most of which at came at crucial junctures, to help the Trojans beat Lyons Township 25-13, 2521 to win their own Class 4A regional championship.

It is the first regional title since 2013 for top-seeded Downers North, which advanced to the Glenbard West Sectional semifinals against either York or St. Francis.

“I thought Payton really picked it up,” Downers North star Clare Delaplane said. “She

was closing the block, working hard and I felt like this was definitely one of her best games of the season.”

Downers North coach Mark Wasik agreed.

“We’ve been working a lot on her blocking and she’s really stuck with it,” Wasik said. “She’s had some frustrating matches in the past where she’s really gotten on herself for it, but she has bounced back and it’s paying off for her. Now we’re seeing the fruits of her labor.”

Wendt had back-to-back blocks followed by a kill which triggered a 6-0 run that gave the Trojans (25-12) a 16-7 lead in the first set. She added two more during another 6-0 run, which she capped with an assist on Maddie Degiorgio’s kill which got North to game point.

The eighth-seeded Lions (1818) won the next two points, but

Wendt finished the game with a kill off a set from senior Elizabeth Dunlap. “(I was) just really pushing it because I really wanted it,” Wendt said. “It helps being on your own court.”

Indeed, Wendt was continuing a family tradition in helping the Trojans win a regional at home.

Her father, Brad, was a junior forward on the boys basketball team that upset Downers Grove South to win a regional championship on the same court in 1987.

“The time that I’ve been here we haven’t won (a regional), so it’s something special,” Wendt said. “I think we did it for each other.”

Trojans fall to Normal Community

NORMAL — It didn’t matter to Downers Grove North that it was the No. 31 seed and had to travel two hours to take on No. 2 and undefeated Normal Community, it didn’t matter that the Ironmen outsized the Trojans at every single position - North got off the bus expecting to win and played that way to the final whistle.

In the end, however, the competitive advantages of Normal were too much to overcome as the Trojans fell 42-0 in the opening round of the IHSA Class 7A playoffs.

It was a return to the postseason for North after missing last year.

“Their line is large, their running back (Varshaun Dixon) and quarterback (Daylen Boddie) are really thick kids and they went through us like butter,” said North coach John Wander. “That is a large football team and our kids never backed down. I told

our kids the better team won the football game. We would have had to play a much better game to be close and we didn’t.”

Normal got the scoring going in the first quarter with 7 minutes, 17 seconds left when Boddie hit Nick Hesse fro a four yard score.

After a North punt, Matthew Wehrs intercepted Boddie and looked to have the Trojans in the hunt, however a fumble on the 20 yard line stopped North’s best chance to score.

“We shot ourselves early with penalties and turnovers and we aren’t the type of team that is good enough to do that against this Normal team,” Wander said.

“We couldn’t really stop them, so we had to keep the ball and we were doing that and then penalty and fumble. Even on the first drive of the game, we had five yards on a penalty and another five yards and we knew what we had to do coming in and we didn’t execute that, hence the scoreboard.”

North was paced offensively by senior Drew Shelly, who car-

ried the ball 21 times for 85 yards.

“They were a good team, but we came out and tried our hardest like we always do. I have to give it to our line, they try all the time and that is how we do what we do,” Shelly said. “I am very proud that we made it here, I just wish we could have gone further, but things happen and we have to go back home and live our lives.”

For the Trojans, the loss may have technically been in the first round of the IHSA postseason, but after a 2-3 start in their first five games, the Trojans face a win-or-go-home game each of the final three weeks of the season and were able to overcome the odds and qualify for the playoffs - something Wander knows the team will be proud of in time.

“They will realize that on the way home or maybe tomorrow or Monday,” he said. “But when you have dreams of grandeur and when those dreams get crushed, it takes young kids and even the coaches - time.”

Bears linebacker Acho talks to local athletes

If someone in Plainfield didn’t know better they would think the Chicago Bears had a bye week this week.

That is because just a day before the Bears were leaving for New Orleans in preperation of an Oct. 29 tilt with the Saints, veteran outside linebacker Sam Acho took time to come to Plainfield Central and speak with athletes as part of a program sponsored by Powerade.

He didn’t just make an appearance. Acho addressed student-athletes about sports and life and then took time to sign autographs, talke photos and answer an array of questions.

“The questions I was asked today were - when is (rookie quarterback) Mitch (Trubisky) going to throw more, what do I

eat every day to put on weight - the answer is PB&J and Chipotle - and a little about how I started getting recruited,” he said. “The students ask unbelievable questions and you can tell that they are eager to learn and eager to make a change.”

The ‘Power Your School’ campaign awarded 500 schools across the country a $2,000 each for its athletic programs totalling $1 million donated by the sports drink company this year.

Plainfield Central, chosen because of District 202’s partnership with the brand as well as the success of its teams, was the lone winner in the Chicagoland area.

“I am actively involved and one thing I love to do is talk to students and encourage them.

As this was getting set up, I heard about the opportunity

and I jumped aboard,” Acho said about coming to Plainfield to speak. “I was telling my wife it is kind of far away, but she said is awesome and said if I had a chance to do it, then go for it.

I love being able to encourage people. It is a gift of mine and I just love being able to do it.”

Acho told the football players in the audience that their story - one of four winless seasons and an 0-39 record and then falling just one win shy of a playoff berth this seaosn - resonated with him.

He related stories of his own high school days, when after earning a scholarship to the University of Texas, how one of his team captains was in disbelief - believing Acho’s ability wasn’t deserving of the scholarship.

“Just because people are on your side, does not mean they

are in your corner,” he told the students.

Even in his professional career, Acho understands rough seasons.

In his seven years in the league, he has only played on a wining team twice and made the playoffs once - in 2014 ith the 11-5 Arizona Cardinals only to lose in the wild card game.

“I can relate to being 0-39,” he said. “There was a time that we were 10-26 in my time in Chicago. You have to block out the noise. It is like if you have a ship - it is the water that gets in the ship that sinks it. It is not what is inside, but it is something that is outside. So, that is a reminder, don’t let outside noise sink your ship. The thing people might understand now is - don’t get lost in the sauce.

“Sometimes your losses

are your biggest lessons and it makes the wins that much sweeter.”

He told the student-athletes not to let what they hear in the hallways or on social media affect what they do.

“You try and block it out,” he said. “I even watch ESPN sometimes or the NFL Network and I am waiting for the Bears highlights and they don’t show them - whether we win or lose - and even if we win, they are showing the highlights of the bad plays.

I am tired of hearing about the bad news Bears, we are the good news Bears and we need to start delivering some good news.”

Acho said that good news has come as of late with the Bears winning two in a row heading into New Orleans - but that did not surprise him.

attitude in that second game,” Wasik said. “They were digging a lot of great balls, they played some really good defense.

“Their system was winning because we knew where they were going to be and it put our back against the wall a little bit, but the scrappiness and the play where Kessie threw a ball over diving, that was a huge turning point. It deflated them and that was the start of a run that we never looked back on.”

Now Delaplane and other seniors like Olekanma and Dunlap, who had 23 assists, have a memory they can always look back on with pride.

“It couldn’t really get any better,” Delaplane said. “It’s nice because it is home, a lot of students could come. It’s just amazing.”

I’ll make about $10,000 this year as a trainer, and $25,000 to $30,000 working events as a DJ. I’ve almost got all my debts paid off, and I love both of my side jobs. I was wondering how to tell when I’m ready to leave my day job and concentrate on personal training and my DJ work.

STEVE DEAR STEVE, I always tell people to first get to a point where their side hustle is generating almost as much money as their day job. I want the boat pulled as close to the dock as you can get it, so that when you make the jump from the dock to the boat you don’t hit the water.

In your case, I would want the $10,000 you earn from personal training to look more like $20,000.

When you reach that level, combined with what you’re making as a DJ, it would create a pretty safe situation for you to quit your day job.

Maybe you could cheat a little on the personal trainer money, because you’re making as much or more as a DJ as you are in your day job. Otherwise, you’re giving up $25,000 for $10,000 and only hoping the personal training gig will grow. That’s not a good idea. I’d like to see that hope proven a little bit more before you walk away from a day job.

It can be dispersed in the form of dividends, or the value of their stock is increased. A credit union is run more like a cooperative. Technically speaking, it’s operated not for profit, and the owners are the credit union members, who are also customers.

As a customer of a credit union, whatever you pay into the credit union – the “profit” – is returned to the members in the form of increased services or actual dispersements. Sometimes, you actually get a check from the credit union.

A lot of banks don’t like credit unions, and say they have an unfair advantage because of their non-profit status. This really isn’t true. Credit unions, with whatever “profits” are made, put that money right back into creating cheaper checking accounts, better interest rates on loans, or higher interest rates on savings.

A bank could do the same thing, if it were willing to make less profit.

So, there’s no disadvantage. They’re just trying to keep stockholders happy and sell stuff to customers.

But really, that all means nothing if you don’t get good service from the organization!

Center Receives $50K from Tyson Foods Investment will help PRC provide over 45,000 grocery carts of food to families in DuPage County People’s Resource Center (PRC) announced Monday, Oct. 30 that they received a $50,000 grant from Tyson Foods to support PRC’s food pantries in Wheaton and Westmont.

This investment will help PRC provide over 45,000 grocery carts filled with fresh produce, frozen meats, bread and healthy nonperishables to low-income families in DuPage County over the coming

year. “Tyson Foods, Inc. is such an amazing partner of the People’s Resource Center,” said Christina LePage, PRC’s senior director of programs. “Their ongoing commitment to invest in PRC’s food pantries is a critical contribution that helps us carry out our mission to serve neighbors in need.

We thank Tyson Foods, Inc. for honoring PRC with this generous award.”

Additionally, this investment from Tyson Foods will allow PRC to host free nutrition education sessions for low-income families as well as provide snacks for local schoolchildren.

DISTRICT 58

District 58 students will perform in prestigious music, jazz festivals Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will again be well represented at the Illinois Music Education Association’s (ILMEA) upcoming music and jazz festivals next month.

Twenty-four District 58 students will perform in ILMEA’s District 1 Junior High Music Festival on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Lincoln-Way Central High School (New Lenox). In addition, one District 58 student will perform in the ILMEA District 1 Jazz Band Festival on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Thornton Fractional South High School (Lansing).

The annual ILMEA Music Festival features student musicians selected by audition from schools throughout the southwest suburbs. The 150-member band, 100-piece orchestra and 150-member choir will unite for a special public Festival Finale Concert at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend!

The annual ILMEA Jazz Festival features the top middle school and high school jazz musicians from the southwest suburbs, selected after a rigorous audition process. The festival will include a public concert at 2 p.m. Admission costs $5 for each festival. Children under 6 will be admitted for free.
