Robert Rheintgen was first introduced to the world of Star Wars in 1977 – the same year the first film in the highly successful franchise was released by 20th Century Fox. Now a father of two, the Downers Grove resident said he saw the original “Star Wars” at the same theater he and his sons were attending the Dec. 17 premiere of the SciFi epic’s latest installment.

“I’m excited to bring my kids,” said Rheintgen. “This is the first time they’re going to see any of the Star Wars movies on the big screen.”

Rheintgen, along with 11-yearold Luke and 8-year-old Ben, were among the hundreds of area residents who attended the 7 p.m. premiere of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at the Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove.

Fans waiting for their chance to get a first look at the film lined Highland Avenue in front of the theater and wrapped around the block onto Rogers Street. In addition to these excited fans, members of the Midwest 501st Garrison – a Star Wars costuming club in Illinois – walked through the crowd to interact and take pictures with those waiting in line.

“The Force Awakens” at the Tivoli, which boasts 1,014 seats in its main theater.

Mark Mazrimas, marketing manager for Classic Cinemas, said that made the Tivoli the largest venue in Illinois to premiere the film. To celebrate the occasion, he said the theater brought in the Midwest 501st Garrison to add to the festive atmosphere and provide fans with some entertainment before doors opened at 6 p.m. Once inside, attendees were treated to music by Tivoli house organist David Rhodes, who played songs from the films.

“We’re very excited about the opportunity to show Star Wars,” Mazrimas said, noting the Tivoli

typically does not give new movies a “first run.”

A long-time fan of Star Wars, Mazrimas said he was excited to see director J.J. Abrams’ take on the classic film franchise, as well as being reunited with the movies’ “old guard.” Characters such as Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) return in “The Force Awakens” to share the screen with a fresh new cast that includes Oscar Isaac, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley.

“I think that’s a wonderful way to transition,” Mazrimas said of bringing back the original cast. “My feeling is this [film] is going to make people feel the same way they did when the saw the very first ‘Star Wars.’”

With almost 40 years between the original and what is now the seventh film in the series, its fans stretch across several generations.

That multi-generational fanbase is what Mazrimas likes most about Star Wars.

“Grandfathers will be coming with sons and with grandsons, and they’ll be sharing it,” he said. “I think that’s a wonderful experience.”

Outside, Luke and Ben Rheintgen were eager to get out of the cold and see the latest chapter in a story their father fell in love with 38 years ago.

“Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” will continue at the Tivoli through the middle of January.

Community High School District 99 announced last week that Henry Thiele will take over as the district’s next superintendent, effective July 1, 2016.

During its Dec. 14 meeting, the District 99 Board of Education unanimously approved a three-year performance contract with Thiele, who will replace Mark McDonald when he retires at the end of the 2015-16 school year. McDonald has served as superintendent since 2008.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Thiele to District 99,” Board of Education President Dr. Nancy Kupka said in a news release. “He has significant experience in the classroom, in administration and in advancing curricular and student development.”

Maine Township High School District 207, where he is the assistant superintendent for technology and learning. The Park Ridge school district serves more than 6,500 students in its three high schools.

During his time at District 207, Thiele has led the district through the deployment of several largescale initiatives related to teaching,

learning and technology.

District 99 said Thiele’s achievements include becoming the first to bring Google Apps to a K-12 setting, launching a full-scale 1:1 Learning program, transitioning more than half of District 207’s textbooks to digital platforms, and helping the district receive national recognition for innovations in technology and learning.

“His vast technological experience will help [District 99] integrate new methods of teaching into the classroom, building upon and augmenting the outstanding work of the current administration,” Kupka added.

In addition to authoring numerous academic papers and curricula, Thiele has been a featured keynote speaker and presenter at dozens of professional conferences about instruction and technology locally and nationwide. He is also serves in a variety of professional organizations, including as president for the Special Education Technology Connections. The focus of the nonprofit organization is

ComEd to install 15,000 smart meters Customers can track how much energy they are using with meters

Commonwealth Edison will build out its “smart grid” in Woodridge next year, according to a recent post on the village’s website.

The state’s largest electric utility hosted a smart grid and smart meter workshop Dec. 3 at Woodridge Village Hall, 5 Plaza Drive, where representatives shared plans for installing the new meters in all Woodridge homes and businesses in 2016.

ComEd is expected to install a total of 15,043 smart meters, with work beginning in July and ending in November.

Smart meters are a component the smart grid, which is part of ComEd’s effort to modernize its electric system to provide more reliable service. By installing smart

Prior to District 207, Thiele was a music and science teacher at Conant High School in Hoffman Estates, which is one of five high schools in Township High School District 211 in Palatine. His last position at District 211 was as technology coordinator, where he was responsible for Conant’s educational technology department.

“I reviewed Hank’s materials, and right away I knew that he was the one I wanted,” District 99 board member Don Renner said. “I think

‘innovation’ is the best way to describe [Thiele’s] potential, and I believe [he has] a ton of it.”

Additionally, Thiele was an adjunct professor in the department of education at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He received a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education from Concordia University, where he earned a double major in instrumental music and physical sciences. He also holds Master of Arts in teacher leadership and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Roosevelt University in Chicago.

District 99 said it is planning to hold public receptions over the next several months to introduce Thiele to the Downers Grove North and South communities.

Chicago man charged in Woodridge murder Launden Luckett accused of fatally stabbing girlfriend Oct. 17 A DuPage County judge denied bond for a Chicago man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death Oct. 17 in her Woodridge apartment.

Launden Luckett, 28, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Cecily Dickey, whose body was discovered Oct. 19 by the Woodridge Police Department. If found guilty, Luckett could be sentenced to natural life in prison.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, a nobond arrest warrant was issued for Luckett Dec. 15.

Several days after the murder, Luckett was arrested by Cook County authorities on unrelated charges. He has been in custody since that time and was transported to DuPage County the same day that the warrant was issued.

Prosecutors allege that on the

evening of Oct. 16, Dickey drove to Chicago to pick up Luckett and bring him back to her apartment, where a verbal argument turned physical in the early morning hours of Oct. 17.

Luckett is charged with fatally stabbing Dickey, before stealing her cellphone, debit card and car and fleeing the scene.

Authorities said Dickey had been repeatedly stabbed and choked, and an autopsy determined that

“Nearly two months ago, Cecily Dickey’s life came to a violent, brutal end,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “While nothing can be done to bring Cecily back to those who loved her, the tremendous work of the Woodridge Police Department and the Felony Investigative Assistance Team will allow us to bring a strong prosecution against the man who allegedly took her life.”

Luckett’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 7.

Christmas carols and holiday television specials and stories are filled with traditions that may be lost on us in the 21st Century. Where did these customs, traditions and legends come from?

If you’ve heard of frankincense and myrrh, it’s probably thanks to the biblical account of the birth of Jesus.

The book of Matthew says Magi, or wise men, followed a bright eastern star to Bethlehem, the place where Christians believe Jesus was born. There, these wise men saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the child.

We all know what gold is, but what are frankincense and myrrh? Both frankincense and myrrh are derived from the gummy sap that oozes out of the Boswellia and Commiphora trees, respectively, after their bark has been cut. The leaking resin is allowed to harden and is scraped off the trunk in tear-shaped droplets; it may then be used in its dried form or steamed to yield essential oils.

chewed like gum. They are also extremely fragrant, particularly when burned, with frankincense giving off a sweet, citrusy scent and myrrh producing a piney, bitter odor.

These items were considered extremely valuable in the ancient world and standard gifts for a king or deity. Gold is a valuable precious metal, frankincense was used as perfume or incense, and myrrh was used as anointing oil. Other accounts from the ancient world that detail these items being presented as gifts include King Seleucus II Callinicus offering to the god Apollo at the temple in Miletus. The Book of Isaiah also mentions these gifts. During Jerusalem’s restoration, it was said that nations and kings would come and “bring gold and frankincense.”

Another tradition during Christmas is to hang mistletoe in one’s house.

Mistletoe is a plant that grows on willow and apple trees, and the tradition of hanging it in the house goes back to the times of the ancient druids.

According to mythology, mistletoe possesses mystical powers that bring good luck to households where it is hung and wards off evil spirits. It was also used as a sign of love and friendship in Norse mythology. Interestingly, some of the first Christians who came to Western Europe tried to ban the use of mistletoe in churches. However, many Christians continue to hang the plant to this day.

hold a special Mistletoe Service in the winter, where wrongdoers in the city of York could come and be pardoned.

England also gave us the custom of kissing under mistletoe. In the original custom, a berry was picked from the sprig of mistletoe before the person could be kissed. Once all the berries had gone, there could be no more kissing.

Christmas carols are an important part of the holiday. A favorite of carolers this time of year is “The First Noel,” but what does “noel” mean? In French, joyeux noel means “Merry Christmas.” Our modern English word comes from the Middle English nowel, which Webster’s Dictionary defines as “a shout of joy or Christmas song.”

The roots of the word are the French noel “Christmas season,” which may come from the Old French nael, which in turn, is derived from the Latin natalis, meaning “birth.” Since Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, it was natural for people to refer to the celebration as the “nativity” or the “birth.”

Another possible root for noel, also from the French, is the word nouvelles, meaning “news.” As the popular carol says, “The first noel the angels did say / Was to certain poor shepherds. . . .”

The meaning of “news” certainly makes sense in that context. However, the early usage and definition of noel seem to focus more on the idea of birth and that is probably the more accurate meaning.

This year’s Romeoville Christmas Classic will have a new look.

After having separate big and small school brackets with the two divisions meeting in the final round, this year there is just one bracket with the different school sizes mixed in.

Defending champion Downers Grove North returns this year to lead the field.

It has been a slow start this year for the Trojans as they are just 2-5 and have yet to win a WSC Silver game. However, they used the tournament last year to springboard into a strong second half of the season.

Defending tournament MVP Devin Blake returns to lead the Trojans.

“We are looking forward to playing a four-game tournament format,” Downers North coach James Thomas said. “Being able to complete against a field of teams and get a variety of styles of play allows for your team to improve heading into the new year.”

They open the tournament Saturday, Dec. 26 at 6:30 p.m. against Lincoln-Way East (3-4).

A win would put them in the 8 p.m. game Dec. 28 against the winner of Chicago Christian (7-1)

and Lemont (4-3), which features recruit PJ Pipes. The losing schools will play at 1:30 p.m. that day.

The other half of the bottom bracket features the host school, Romeoville. It opens play in the nightcap on the first day at 8 p.m. against Oak Forest (4-3).

The Spartans (3-4) feature several underclassmen on their roster, but are led by senior Matt Cappelletti.

“We open up the RHS Classic against Oak Forest, which is well coached in has played in the championship game at RHS the past two years,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “We just want to continue developing our youth and playing four solid quarters of basketball each night.

We are emphasizing closing out games better in the fourth and that starts with attention to detail defensively.”

The winner of that game plays at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28 against the winner of Glenbard South (4-3) and Phillips (1-2). The losers of the game will face off at noon.

The bottom bracket winners will face off at 8 p.m. Dec. 29, while the consolation winners face off at noon.

On the other half of the bracket are two more Voyager Media teams. Plainfield Central (0-8) faces off with Reavis (4-3) at 9 a.m.

In what is widely considered the top tournament of all the holiday tournaments, several Voyager Media teams will square off with some of the state’s best at the 85th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

Peoria Manual is the No.1 seed in the tournament and the

No. 4 team in the state of Illinois according to ChicagoHoops.com.

The No. 2 seed goes to Curie, the No. 5 team in Illinois, while Simeon is the third seed and No. 3 team in Illinois. Curie comes out of the Public League Red-Central and opened the season 4-0 and Simeon is 2-1 in the CPL RedSouth after a loss to Morgan Park.

The two teams with the Tiger nickname were both in the Joliet West tournament but did not

play each other, so this is the first time this season DiForti will face Plainfield North, the place he began his coaching career.

Niles West (3-5) will open play in Pontiac at 4 p.m. against Oak Park-River Forest (3-4).

The Wolves are led by 6-foot, 4-inch senior Evan Hines a Minnesota State-Moorhead recruit.

“We are excited to be in the best and oldest Holiday Tournament in the state,” said Niles West coach Bob Williams.

“We hope to improve our level of play by meeting the challenge of

playing great teams every round.

Our first round match-up is no exception. Oak Park River Forest has an excellent team and they are well coached year after year.

We will need to rebound at both ends and play great defense to be competitive.”

A win for the Wolves would likely get them a match-up with top-seeded Manual.

Lastly for local teams is Lockport, who will open the tournament at 9 a.m. Dec. 28 against Danville. It will be the Porters’ first trip to Pontiac under new head coach Brett Hespell.

Area Muslims condemn ISIS Association of Pakistani Americans’ president speaks out against ‘un-Islamic ideology’

As terror attacks by groups like the Islamic State in Syria and Al Qaeda continue to stun the world, American Muslims are gathering to promote peace and to help educate their communities about their opposition to these types of extremist groups.

Hours after the Paris attacks, the Association of Pakistani Americans in Bolingbrook sent a statement to the ambassador of Paris and local officials condemning the act.

“We are equally saddened and shaken by the attacks of this terror group,” the statement read. “This kind of inhumane act has no place in any society. These individuals carried out their own agenda using Islam which is against the teaching

In a time when a new Gallup poll taken Dec. 8 noted that 2 in 3 people think acts of terror in the U.S. are likely, The Muslim community in Bolingbrook is making efforts to reassure residents that radical Islam does not represent the more than 1,000 Muslims living in the area.

Talat Rashid, president of the APA, described ISIS as a terrorist organization that grew after the Iraq invasion and flourished in Syria.

“It is a cult, which has nothing to do with Islam,” Rashid told the Bugle. “It is dividing Muslims for their own benefits. It also seeks to divide the entire society to gain their ill intentions. It has killed thousands of Muslims since its inception.”

ISIS, according to Rashid, does not represent Islam or Muslims in any way. Similar to other religions, he said Islam teaches peace.

He explained that whenever incidents of this magnitude happens, regardless of who carried it out, he believes no religions advocate killing innocent people.

“We are very fortunate that so far nothing has happened in Bolingbrook,” Rashid said. “But you never know, because backlash is a result of public emotions and immediate reaction. People listen and read news and make biased judgments immediately without looking into the real matter, especially when a Muslim name is involved. People question why these groups are defaming Islam and its real flower. “[American Muslims] all try to disassociate themselves with [terrorists] and tell them, this is not us, this is not Islam. As always, we pray that this does not happen again.”

Last year, the threat of ISIS did hit close to home. A Bolingbrook man was arrested after attempting to leave the country to join ISIS in Syria.

“It was very shocking to all of us and no one expected that this would hit our home in Bolingbrook, where the Muslim community is proactive and living the American dream,” said Rashid. “It was a very scary and unbelievable event that shook everyone not only in Bolingbrook but the entire U.S. This young man did not go to any of our Islamic schools in Bolingbrook. He was recruited from the Internet, which is the tool that is being used by ISIS.”

American Values Luckily, Rashid said that Muslims in Bolingbrook, with two mosques and one Islamic school, Furqan Academy, have been very well supported by the village.

“Bolingbrook is a very diverse city and Muslims are proud to be a part of this fabric,” said Rashid. “The city not only encourages religious practices but also helps facilitate these religious practices. In the past 25 years there has not been a single incident in my knowledge where any Muslim was discriminated against based on their ethnic and religious practices.”

Adding to the fire are comments like that of presidential candidate Donald Trump who has been calling for an extreme crackdown on U.S. Muslims.

“A presidential candidate should not be making comments like this,” said Rashid. “His comments not only outraged Muslims, but every other ethnic community, including other Republican and Democratic candidates. Muslims also want to see this country a safe place to live.
