reopening of the community’s secondary exit, as the new Four lakes Avenue bridge was finally opened to the public.

“Without this connection, it’s very inconvenient for everybody,” said Public Works Director Jason elias, noting that residents have only been able to enter the community from Maple Avenue since July.

The bridge connects the community to Illinois route 53.

District shares notification procedures for school closures New craft brewery to Sending automated voice, email messages to parents via SchoolMessenger utilized December marks the beginning of another Chicagoland winter, and Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is reminding parents of its winter weather and school closing procedures.

When hazardous winter weather prompts school closings, District 58 said it would notify parents, staff and the community using a variety of communication tools.

That communication includes sending automated voice and email messages to all parents via its SchoolMessenger notification

system. The system will also send text messages to parents who have registered for the service, which parents can sign up for by texting YES to 68453.

District 58 said it also posts school closure information online at www.dg58.org and on the district’s answeringmachineat630-719-5800.

The district also notifies a variety of radio and TV stations. School closure information will also be posted at www.emergencyclosings. com.

The decision to close schools

is made by the District 58 superintendent, who consults with local superintendents, the bus company and police department.

Many factors are considered when deciding whether or not to close schools. Those factors include building conditions, site conditions, bus operations, road conditions and air temperature.

“Student safety is District 58’s top priority, but the district also understands that canceling school is inconvenient for students, teachers and parents,” Community Relations Coordinator Megan Hewitt said in a press release. “The superintendent will make the decision as soon as safely possible, or by 6 a.m.”

Chicagoland loves craft beers and three longtime brewers are bringing their signature flavor to Downers Grove.

The Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation announced last week that Alter Brewing Company will open a new brewery in the village later this month.

“The vision of the founders is to create world class beer, while being the ‘neighborhood brewery,” said Pete Kosanovich, who founded Alter Brewing with friends David Yob and Mark Hedrick.

The brewery will be located at 2300 Wisconsin, Suite 213, near the Belmont Road Metra Station and Interstate 355 and Interstate 88.

According to DGEDC, the 8500-square-foot production facility will feature 19-foot ceilings and a 20-barrel stainless steel brewhouse, manufactured

by W.M. Sprinkman Corporation.

Construction went well, according to Four Lakes Property Manager Wanda Mariscal, who only received three complaints during construction.

Alter Brewing will have continually produced beers, along with seasonal and limited release offerings. The DGEDC said exact details of the opening will be posted on Alter’s website and Facebook.

Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully said he is excited Alter Brewing chose the village for its “state-of-the-art” brewery, adding that he is looking forward to the grand opening.

“No doubt about it, Alter Brewing Company will be another reason to call Downers Grove a destination community,” he said.

Ken Tracy lives in one of the 2,221 units at Four Lakes, and said the bridge means fewer travel headaches.

“I do some work in the neighborhood [on the other side of the bridge] and I’ve had to go all the way around… so this is going to make it a whole lot easier,” Tracy said “I use this bridge all the time, it will be good to have it back.”

The old bridge, built in 1969, was in a state of disrepair, with weight limits preventing heavy vehicles from using it.

Man charged with attempted murder after Wal-Mart shooting Prosecutors say Bradley Morris fired 4 shots at victim

A Downers Grove man was charged with attempted firstdegree murder, following a shooting Dec. 3 at a Darien Wal-Mart.

Bradley Morris, 19, of the 1000 block of Palmer Street, was charged with one count of attempted first degree murder, a Class X felony; one

count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony; and one count of unlawful use of a weapon, a Class 4 felony, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. The suspect’s bond was set at $3 million.

Prosecutors said officers with the Darien Police Department responded to a call of shots fired in the store at approximately 5:40 p.m. Dec. 3. Upon their arrival, officers gathered evidence and spoke to witnesses.

According to the state’s attorney, there was a verbal altercation in the store between Morris and the

victim that turned physical. The suspect then pulled a gun and shot four times at the victim, striking him once in the back of his right shoulder. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene.

An investigation into the shooting led authorities to Morris, who was apprehended Dec. 5 at a bus station in Chicago. Prosecutors said he was attempting to board a bus bound for Florida. The injury sustained by the victim in this case was not life-threatening, and he is

expected to make a full recovery.

“I would like to thank the Darien Police Department, the U.S. Marshall’s Office and the Felony Investigative Assistance Team whose outstanding efforts led to a man who allegedly thought nothing of firing a weapon in a crowded store during the busiest shopping season of the year,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 4.

Police urge residents to report suspicious behavior Safety of students, being aware around schools important The Westmont Police Department is asking residents to be mindful of their surroundings during the holiday season.

In a post on the village of Westmont’s website, police urged people to immediately report suspicious behavior or criminal activity by calling 911.

“If you see something, say something,” Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said. “We want people to keep this simple phrase in mind. This mantra has been adopted by the Office of Homeland Security and the goal is to encourage everyone to be vigilant at all times when it comes to safety and reporting suspicious behavior.”

Reporting a crime When reporting a crime, try to remember key information that will be important to the dispatcher such as location of the incident or address; is an ambulance needed; has a gun been fired or has there been a use of a weapon; and a complete description of person being reported, including gender, approximate age, approximate height, approximate weight, facial features and description of clothing. If a car is involved, the make, model, license plate and last known direction of travel is helpful.

Crime tip line The Westmont Police Department also has a non-emergency crime tip line in which a caller can leave a message and provide information for follow up by the department. That number is 630-981-6310. Additionally, residents can send information via email to chiefofpolice@westmont. il.gov. This address is monitored by staff and the department follows up with any information received.

Mulhearn added that crime can be reduced overall if everyone is working together to keep the community safe.

“This simple reminder may prevent someone from becoming a victim of a crime,” he said, noting that individuals often hesitate to report a potential

criminal situation. “If something seems out of the ordinary, then call 911 so that police can respond and determine the specifics of a situation.

The department reminded residents that if they call 911 from a cell phone, their call may be answered by the local sheriff’s department. The person calling should immediately tell the dispatcher the name of the town from where they are calling and give them the location of the crime. The call will then be connected to the appropriate operations center.

The body of a Woodridge man was discovered Dec. 3 in a retention pond behind a strip mall in the 1900 block of West 75th Street, according to police. Woodridge police said the department received a report of a

body in the water at approximately 2 p.m. Officers arrived on scene shortly after and found the body, identified as Ruslan Tiniakov.

The Darien-Woodridge Fire District assisted the Woodridge Police Department in recovering the body, which was transported to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office for identification and autopsy.

The fire district said it activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 10 Dive Team and received assistance from fired departments in Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, LaGrange, Oak Brook and Riverside, as well as fire districts in Lemont, Lisle-Woodridge and Pleasantview.

Woodridge police said foul play was not suspected.

And while a new year provides an By Jason excellent opportunity Florin To Your Mental for self-evaluation and Health plans for positive change in the months ahead, there’s no reason you have to wait for the calendar to turn in order to begin a transformation.

Taking even the smallest steps now will make it more likely that you follow through on your commitment to work toward self improvement in the New Year. It also establishes a pattern of behavior that will help make next year’s holiday season more manageable.

The end of the year can be a challenging time to initiate change, although it also presents a unique opportunity. While the hectic pace of holiday shopping and planning family gatherings gives us ample reasons to indulge our harmful habits, this may also be the best time to start healthy ones.

A behavior does not become a habit right away. In fact, a 2009 study done at University College London suggests that people need an average of 66 days to develop a new habit. Putting off change only delays this timeline from beginning.

An important first step is focusing on a specific, active behavior. Some of the most common resolutions involve losing weight, quitting smoking, and reducing or stopping alcohol use.

All of these are admirable goals, yet they are missing an important element. None of them involves actions; instead, they are all the absence of action. In order to be successful in these goals, you will need to begin new behaviors that will take their place. What will you be doing when you are not smoking, when you are in shape and when you are no longer drinking? The image that comes to mind is the action that you can take.

Getting motivated for new behaviors is a crucial part of making the commitment necessary for change to happen. Consider making a list of reasons why you want to make a change. Do you want to look better, feel better, save money or eliminate health problems? Maybe it’s about being alive longer for your family or setting an example for your children.

You can make your reasons public or keep them private. Just keep them in mind as you continue on your path.

For people already in recovery from alcohol and other drug problems, here are some other important things to remember: Have a backup plan in place If you find yourself in a high-stress, high-risk situation, be prepared to leave or call someone you trust to be a support. Don’t test yourself by assuming you should be able to handle a difficult situation. As the old recovery

saying goes, “If you hang out at a barbershop long enough, you’re going to get a haircut.”

Keep doing what works Focus on the healthy habits that have been effective in your recovery.

That might include attending support group meetings, being part of a faith group or church, surrounding yourself with sober friends, talking to a sponsor, eating well, or exercising. These are the same habits that will help you successfully navigate stressful times in your life while keeping you focused on your goals.

If you slip, get back up – Relapses, or slips, are part of many people’s experience in recovery. Dwelling on the mistake or feeling ashamed about the behavior are generally ineffective and unhelpful. On the other hand, acknowledging the poor choice and taking steps to do better are highly effective. Stop the slide by recognizing that you are in control of your actions.

Then back up and do the behaviors that were working before.

Finally, remember the words of famed explorer Sir Francis Drake: Sic Parvis Magna, or “Greatness from small things.” The actions you take now may seem insignificant, but over time they can make a huge impact.

Protecting funds for energy assistance The General Assembly just passed and the governor signed a bill that released nearly $3 billion of alreadycollected money sitting in dedicated funds. Among these are utility ratepayer contributions to the Illinois Supplemental Low-Income Energy Assistance Fund, which supplements the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

These ratepayer contributions are collected through our utility bills and placed in a public trust for the exclusive purpose of aiding our state’s elderly, people with special needs, veterans and poor with the high cost of heat and electricity. I commend the General Assembly and governor for finally releasing these funds as the winter

months approach.

Despite this step forward, the bigger budget discussion continues and these funds are still in danger. These SLEAF funds are not general revenue funds and should be off the table as Springfield considers solutions to the current fiscal year and FY17 budgets.

Thesefundscombinedwiththefederal funds only satisfy a small fraction of the state’s overall need. The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity estimated that under current state and federal funding levels LIHEAP would only help 35 percent of the roughly 926,000 eligible households in Illinois this year.

The SLEAF fund also helps keep all ratepayers’ bills lower by reducing the

“uncollectables” the utilities recover in everyone’s rates.

Given the escalating utility costs, the harsh Illinois winters our residents have had to endure in recent years, and the ongoing hardships due to the budget stalemate and slow economic recovery, these funds are needed more than ever.

Challenging fiscal decisions must be made; however, any budget solutions cannot include consideration of redirecting these much-needed funds into the general revenue fund or reallocating any portion of these funds. It is imperative that the Illinois SLEAF, which aids our most vulnerable residents, be protected.

At the beginning of the season, when Benet coach Gene Heidkamp looked over the Redwings schedule, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

But after posting a 51-38 win over Joliet Catholic Academy, Benet remained perfect through seven games.

“We didn’t know what the expectations were because we play such a tough schedule. We have played seven really good teams so far, so we are pleased to be 7-0,” Heidkamp said. “(JCA) is a very good team and we knew that was going to be a tough, hard-fought game. They are a very experienced team with a lot of talent and they are well coached. We knew it would be a really, really tough game for us and I thought we played pretty well considering.”

Benet won the game with the same formula they have in the past, solid defense and strong shooting.

“I thought we shared the ball well. We hit nine threes in the game, but it wasn’t about the three, it was about how we got the threes. We had good extra passing and got open looks and we hit our shots,” Heidkamp said.

As the season moves along, Heidkamp knows the chemistry will get even better.

“We have a lot of balance offensively. We have a lot of balance in Danny (Sobolewski) and (James) Dockery and Jason Malonga, those guys played a lot last year and the younger guys have seven games under their belts now and they are getting their feet wet,” he said. “They are getting more comfortable and that is starting to show in their play. Our seniors are playing with experience and our juniors are getting better and better on both ends of the floor. As the seniors and juniors keep playing together and mix together more, that will be a good thing for us.”

Veteran Mustangs ready to make big run

Coming off of a successful season a year ago, the Downers Grove South wrestling team is primed for an even better run this season.

“We are returning quite a bit and we have our biggest senior class in years, so that usually bodes well for a good season,” said second-year coach Sean Lovelace.

Last season, South finished with a 15-8 mark and shared the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title. They placed second in the regional for the fourth year in a row.

South boasts 15 seniors in total on the roster. It returns six sectional qualifiers from a year ago, including Tyree Johnson, who was all-state last season at 138 pounds.

After dropping his initial match at the state meet 5-2 to Conant’s Bobby Alexander, Johnson went on to beat Plainfield Central’s Clayton Ledbetter 7-3 and

DeKalb’s Brad Green 7-0.

He then fell 8-3 to Qarin Johnic of Wheaton Warrenville South in the consolation bracket semifinal.

In the fifth-place match, Johnson lost again falling 2-1 to Andrew Mehrolz to place sixth in the bracket.

Johnson, like some others, will not be ready to enter the lineup just yet.

“We have some injury carry overs from football that we are working through,” Lovelace said.

“Tyree Johnson was all-state last year and Mark Leflore-Chapman who was a captain last year and they are out.”

Also out for a bit is heavyweight Zach Muller.

“Those are pretty solid kids and the nice thing is we are still having a good start to the season with what we have,” Lovelace said.

“This is good experience for the other guys. The guys have battled well. We have solid freshmen that are filling in the lower weights and doing a nice job.”

“They have played a lot and they have made some big shots for us. They are getting better with the ball and are making good decisions and their defense is getting where it needs to be,” Heidkamp said.

Defense is what the coach believes will dictated the team’s success.

“As our defense continues to get better, that is a good sign for us and offensively if we continue to share the ball we have the ability to put points up, but our defense is what ultimately will decide if we have a good season or not,”

and the freshmen are getting caught up to speed fast and with the other guys coming back, we should be rocking and rolling.”

With the roster dominated by experience wrestlers, Lovelace said the Mustangs are continuing to increase the competition the team sees.

“We have made a conscience decision to increase the difficulty of the schedule because these are the kids that we will wrestle in the sectional and the state tournament,” he said.

Heidkamp said. “There are things we can do a lot better still. This team is a work in progress and that is the encouraging thing. Our ceiling is much higher than we are playing right now, but we will be challenged by our schedule.”

That schedule will not get easier as the year goes on for Benet.

“We have Marian Catholic and then Conant and they are two of the top programs in the Chicagoland area and then we go to Pontiac,” Heidkamp said.

“After the tournament, we have Fenwick who is third in the state and then Notre Dame. So, there are no easy ones.”
