For the past four years, hundreds of residents from Downers Grove, Woodridge and surrounding towns have made community service an important part of their Thanksgiving holiday.

That commitment to community service is met each year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in the form of a mobile food packing event for Feed My Starving Children, an Aurora-based nonprofit that distributes millions of meals annually to malnourished and starving children in almost 70 countries.

“Each year, we’ve increased our goal,” said Jack Reidy, a Downers Grove resident who began organizing the annual mobilepack in 2011 with his wife, Cindy.

Since then, more than a halfmillion meals have been packed during the event.

Reidy said that number is all thanks to the many volunteers who have stayed committed to the annual service project and helped grow the event’s yearly target.

When the Reidys first organized the event, their goal was to pack 100,000 meals. Because of the high level of community support, that goal has increased every year.

“Each year, Feed My Starving Children brings about 10 percent overage of food just in case you hit [your goal],” Reidy said. “The last three years, we’ve always hit our goal and then a little bit more.”

For 2015, Reidy set the ambitious goal of 150,000 meals and volunteers were again up for the challenge. Approximately 775 people packed slightly more than 163,000 meals during this year’s event, which was held Nov. 25 at Hobson Road Community Church in Downers Grove. Reidy said that is enough food to feed about 450 children for an entire year.

Feed My Starving Children is a Christian nonprofit that calls on volunteers to hand pack meals specially formulated for malnourished children. Those meals are then sent to partner organizations in countries of need and distributed through orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs. In addition to mobilepack events, the organization has permanent

packing sites in Libertyville, Schaumburg and Aurora.

Ashley Halsten joined Feed My Starving Children last year after graduating from college. The 24-year-old Aurora resident said the organization has a simple mission: “Feed God’s starving children hungry in body and spirit.”

“I got involved with the group because I’ve always been passionate about doing service work and I really believe in the mission,” Halsten said. “I love knowing that we can impact people globally, and I love seeing the impact [our work] makes around the world.”

The mobilepack was split into four sessions, each starting with an orientation that introduced volunteers to the organization and offered a tutorial on how to safely and efficiently package meals.

Halsten said each meal consists of four main ingredients: rice, soy, veggies and vitamins. And, those ingredients were each chosen for a specific purpose.

“The vitamins are the secret ingredient that helps bring those children back from starvation,” Halsten told the crowd of volunteers. “We all know it’s important to eat our veggies, soy is

That last point is particularly important since FMSC meals are distributed to almost 70 different countries and to a variety of languages and cultures.

“For the people who receive this food, when they see the rice, they feel comfortable feeding it to their children and know how to cook it,” Halsten said.

Halsten was one of a handful of representatives from Feed My Starving Children overseeing the Nov. 25 mobilepack. Nikki Larsen said the organization holds different mobile packs that range inside around the Chicago area and in different major cities around the country.

“It’s a big job to do,” she said. “We

know we’re not the only ones trying to do it, but we’re trying to do our part and engaging volunteers to help us do that.”

Anthony Casper has worked the Downers Grove mobilepack before.

He said Feed My Starving Children determines where its meals go by matching mobilepack events and onsite packing with the need of its various partners overseas.

He said there is not yet a planned destination for the meals packed during the Downers Grove event, but said the organization should know where those meals will be sent within 10 to 14 days of the mobilepack.

Organization names Bellock ‘Legislative Champion’ Award recognizes female leaders who advance policy reform and initiatives Women In Government honored its “legislative champions” during its second annual A Taste of the States fundraiser, titled “Remember the Past, Embrace the Present, and Inspire the Future.”

StateRep.PattiBellock,Westmont, received WIG’s Legislative Champion Award – Midwestern Region during the fundraiser, held Nov. 18 at the Nuclear Energy Institute in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes the female leader who has done the most to advance policy reforms and spearhead new initiatives to improve the quality of life for families in their state.

“I am honored to be recognized as a Legislative Champion by Women In Government,” Bellock said. “Being able to collaborate with

women policymakers throughout the country on advancing a positive, pro-growth economic agenda for families is a tremendously rewarding experience.

Bellock has been a member of the Illinois House of Representatives since 1999 and currently serves as deputy minority leader. She is the first woman in the history of her caucus to hold that position.

“Women In Government congratulates Rep. Patti Bellock on receiving our Legislative Champion Award,” WIG Executive Director Dyan Alexander said in a news release. “Patti Bellock is a recognized leader in Illinois, and we are excited that she continues to share her leadership skills with other women policymakers

throughout the country.”

Currently serving as Illinois State Director of Women In Government, Bellock has been a member of the group since 2000 and served in various leadership capacities on the national organization’s board of directors.

“I have brought the collective experience, energy and innovative solutions of these women back here to Illinois to impact my efforts to forge bipartisan agreement on a state budget that reflects the needs and priorities of our most vulnerable families and taxpayers,” Bellock said.

According to its website, Women In Government Foundation is a national non-partisan, nonprofit organization of female state legislators that provides leadership opportunities, networking, expert forums, and educational resources.

County approves $444.4 million budget The DuPage County Board approved a $444.4 million budget, which is $5.1 million less than last year and includes $56.5 million for stormwater, drainage and road construction capital projects.

Since 2010, the county’s budget has been cut by more than $33 million and marks the

eighth consecutive year without a property tax increase. The 2016 budget, which took effect Dec. 1, includes a flat $66.9 million in property taxes.

“This has been an unusual year as we await a final budget from Springfield,” said DuPage Finance Committee Chairman Paul Fichtner. “In response,

we’ve built a conservative county budget. Our careful approach has served us well and provides the flexibility we need as we prepare for the year ahead.”

Citizen input welcome at strategic plan dialogue The village of Westmont has scheduled a special village board meeting to conduct a community dialogue on its draft strategic plan for 2021 on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Westmont Park District Administration Building, 55 E. Richmond. The entire community

is invited to take part in the review and refinement of the draft plan prior to consideration by the village board.

“This has been a great process and we’re looking forward to having a dynamic plan that will help guide our village’s decision-making over the next several years,” says Village

Manager Stephen May. “We want to thank all of the residents, businesses and community partners that have participated in this process.”

A copy of the current draft of the strategic plan has been posted on the village website for public inspection. The public is invited to come and participate.

Woodridge to host ComEd smart grid workshop The village of Woodridge will hold a public workshop on ComEd’s smart grid Dec. 3, following the village board meeting.

The meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the village hall, 5 Plaza

Drive. The smart grid is part of ComEd’s effort to modernize its electric system to provide more reliable service. Smart meters are a component of the smart grid and will be installed in all homes and businesses

in Woodridge in the coming months. Smart meters enable customers to see how much energy is being used and afford them the opportunity to reduce their consumption and save money on their electric bill.

Sandack named ‘Legislator of the Year’ by Mothers Against Drunk Driving In recognition of his advocacy and legislative initiatives that seek to end drunk driving in Illinois, state Rep. Ron Sandack, R-Downers Grove, was named a “Legislator of the Year” by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Sandack is one of 70 lawmakers nationwide to receive the honor.

“MADD sincerely appreciates Rep. Sandack for his dedication to eliminating the completely preventable crime of drunk driving,” said Colleen SheeheyChurch, national president for the organization. “MADD counts on dedicated lawmakers like Rep. Sandack who share our mission of creating a nation with No More Victims.”

This year, Sandack helped lead an effort in the Illinois General Assembly to require the use of breathalyzer ignition interlock

devices for five years for repeat DUI offenders.

“Through HB 3533, more drunk drivers will be removed from our roads, and families will be safer as they travel,” Sandack said.

Signed into law in August, the bill amended the Illinois Vehicle Code to require any driver with a repeat offense of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, intoxicating compounds or any combination thereof, to use a breathalyzer connected to a vehicle’s ignition device for a period of five years.

“The device tests the driver’s breath, and if it registers alcohol in the system, the car will not start,” said Sandack.

According to Sandack, those required to use the breathalyzer ignition device will also be ineligible to apply for a new driver’s license

until a five-year period is completed without incident with a restricted driving permit. “By taking steps to prevent repeat offenders from prematurely regaining full driving privileges, we are helping MADD advance their mission,” Sandack said, adding that he sincerely appreciates the recognition.

Illinois American Water distributes grant to fire district Grants are awarded to cover the cost of personal protective gear, communications The Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District announced that it will make several computerequipment upgrades thanks to a grant from Illinois American Water.

According to the district, it will purchase 10 Raspberry Pi2 minicomputer starter kits and two computer terminals to be utilized in the fire stations for unit status monitors. The equipment will allow the fire district to display the current status (available, on-scene, at hospital, etc.) of apparatus in the district.

The IAW 2015 Firefighter Grant Program provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizationsservingcommunities

in its service areas. This year, approximately $49,600 will be awarded to 62 fire departments.

According to Bruce Hauk, president of Illinois American Water, the Firefighter Grant Program has been successful in providing assistance to community fire protection efforts.

“Since creation, the program has resulted in providing over 280 grants totaling over $294,000 to fire departments across Illinois.

We are grateful that we can play a role in supporting the firefighter community as a whole in this great state,” Hauk said.

This week, we celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities -- a day where the world special voices Daniel joins together to raise By Smrokowski awareness about disability issues, promote action, and draw attention to the benefits of an inclusive and accessible community for everyone.

This is a time where we focus on an individual’s abilities and a time to educate our communities about how to include those of us with special needs.

This year’s theme is “Inclusion matters: access and empowerment of people of all abilities.” Inclusion applies to people who are diagnosed with all types of disabilities -- both visible and invisible disabilities.

Take, for example, this year’s subtheme: Including people with invisible disabilities. It was back in my time in college that I first began to better understand both the invisible disability that I was diagnosed with, as well as the difference between disabilities that are seen and unseen.

Visible disabilities are often referred to as ones that people may visually perceive and therefore usually see something we are unable to do. Down syndrome,

cerebral palsy or a speech disorder are a few common visible disabilities.

An invisible disability is one that may take a little while for others to perceive.

Learning disabilities and autism are a couple common invisible disabilities.

A good community is one that is built on inclusion, and the way we grow to have better inclusion of those of us with special needs is through acceptance. It is when we come to accept the different abilities that we show that acceptance, and inclusion can then become a regular part of our society. And, the way we come to have acceptance is through awareness.

Our communities need to first become aware of the various special needs that some individuals have. Awareness leading to acceptance and then inclusion can truly change the world.

A powerful example of acceptance and inclusion is that of my friend and previous “Special Voices” athlete Bree Bogucki. Bree, diagnosed with autism, is a fellow athlete and Global Messenger in Special Olympics Illinois.

She has always had a difficult time being accepted and included in a mainstream setting within her school.

That is, until her sophomore year of high school when the game began to change.

It was the beginning of Bree’s sophomore year of high school when her older sister, Kailey, began attending college about four hours away from their home. Since Kailey had been Bree’s best friend, Bree had slipped into a depression.

For those who know Bree, she moves at a slow pace, as recalled by her mom, Mary Ellen, in a recent blog post.

In helping to combat her daughter’s depression, Mary Ellen took Bree to therapy. A few weeks after starting therapy, Bree came home and announced

she had joined the high school track team. Mary Ellen reached out to the head coach who then suggested that Bree could be his manager.

But Bree didn’t want to be a manager, she wanted to participate. She wanted to run!”

Even though Bree came in last place during her first meet, her teammates, those without special needs, were proud of her. Her peers had accepted and included her as part of their community.

Fast forward to today, Bree is in her senior year of high school and added cross country to the list of mainstream sports she has participated in. She has gone from last place to be an alternate on the girl’s varsity cross-country team.

Bree added cross-country because for the first time in her mainstreamed life, she was accepted. Despite the invisible disabilities that she was diagnosed with, Bree was included.

It is with one’s own determination but also the right support, encouragement and friendship that one with invisible disabilities can be motivated to rise above any challenges that one may face along the way. Bree’s inclusive story shows us that we truly can live in a world accepting of those of us with invisible disabilities.

Despite having a young team, Downers Grove South got off to a fast start to the season, going 4-1 in the York Thanksgiving Tournament and taking home the tournament title.

The Mustangs opened play with a 37-33 win over York and then topped Niles West 59-52 and Prospect 54-48. They beat Oswego 33-31 then fell to Conant 48-40.

Junior point guard Addyson Wesolowski was named to the AllTournament Team.

Not only can the Mustangs bring home a tournament title, the tournament allowed them to see solid competition and a full week to adjust and prepare for future games.

“It is definitely a long week with five games in six days,” Downers South coach Lyndsie Long said.

“It is definitely going to prepare us because we are going to be off for

a week, while a lot of other teams are playing their tournaments.

We get to prepare for conference time. It’s a good opportunity to see where we are at and know what we have to work on for next week.”

While the team is young, they do have experience playing throughout the year.

“With this group we have quite a few players who play AAU, so they play year-round. We’re definitely a young team and we’re missing those girls who were the shooters and scorers for the team, but we have people stepping up,” Long said. “We are learning every game and we know we need it to be a group effort and not just one person.”

The biggest adjustment from last year to this year may be the size differential. Last year Downers South was a relatively small team, while this year they are loaded with size.

Augment sisters medal at state meet

For the second year in row, Downers Grove North’s Emily Augment was sixth in the state in the one-meter diving event at the IHSA state swim meet.

This season, her twin sister, Elizabeth, was on the medal stand with her, as she placed ninth.

Emily posted a score of 430.80, while Elizabeth tallied a 406.45.

“There was a lot of competition this year, so I was trying to get sixth or better and I did,” Emily said.

She said she enjoys competing with her sister.

“Knowing you have someone here who supports you and is right here with you really helps and it is fun,” she said. “We are

inseparable.”

And with Elizabeth competing well in preliminaries, they were able to be inseparable as allstaters.

“I am happy with how it went.

Finals were a little rough, but I was just happy I made it to finals,” Elizabeth said. “It was a great experience. It is really fun both being here because we can help each other and coach each other before our dives and we are together.”

It was not the first time the two were on the medal stand together, when as freshmen, Emily was seventh and Elizabeth eighth.

Not bad for a couple of former gymnasts.

“We were in gymnastics and she put Emily in a (diving) class and I joined,” Elizabeth said.

“And here we are.”

Long hopes to eventually be able to use that size as an advantage.

“We have to realize we are a taller team and use that to our advantage,” Long said. “When they start doubling the post, then we can kick it outside to our shooters. I think if we do that and mix it up and run the floor, there is going to be good things to come.”

The Mustangs hope to build on their early season success and eventually come away with a WSC Gold Conference title.

“We want to take every game and learn from it,” Long said.

“We’re a really young team with only three seniors on the team, so

leadership is coming from all over the floor. We came in second in conference last year, so the goal is to win it this year and I think we can do it. We have to keep learning and be more consistent.”

BENET Benet returns three starters from last year’s 34-3 IHSA Class 4A state title squad.

Leading the way is 5-foot, 10inch senior Kathleen Doyle, who is committed to the University of Nebraska. As a junior the do-it-all point guard was all-conference and All-State, averaging over 13 points, five assists, five rebounds, three steals and 1.5 blocks per game.

Other returning starters include 6-1 junior center Katie Jaseckas (6 rebbounds and 2 blocks per game) and 5-8 senior guard Elise Stout (58% FG shooting and 2 steals per game).

The Redwings plan to continue to press after averaging nearly

70 points per game last year.

However, more than 40 points from last year’s squad were lost to graduation, including starters Emily Eshoo (Bradley University) and Emily Schramek (Northern Michigan University).

Junior 5-11 forward Kendal Schramek will try to fill her sister’s spot with senior 5-7 guard Sami Valentine the likely fifth starter.

Other contributions are expected from 5-10 senior forward Megan Will and 5-8 junior guard Emma Lyne. Coach Joe Kilbride is also hoping for contributions from 5-10 junior transfer Ali Kramer and 6-1 freshman Lauren Stack.

Benet has jumped out to a 6-0 start to the season after winning the Naperville Central Tip Off Classic with a win over Oswego East.

They advanced to the finals with a 63-40 win over Bartlett as Doyle had 12 points and seven rebounds and Stout added 13 points and five boards.

For most big league ball players their prospect debuts begin or continue in summer wood bat leagues across the nation. With 50 different summer collegiate leagues all around the US and Canada it’s a big business and a major driver towards the scouting and development of future MLB stars.

Of the 50 plus leagues, only a select few drive the bulk of the collegiate prospects. Towards the top of that list is a league named the Prospect League, the league that will be coming to the Village of Lisle.

Lisle Baseball Partners, LLC announced today that Prospect League baseball is coming to Village of Lisle – Benedictine University Sports Complex in 2016. Crosstown Classic basketball series kicks off Dec. 6 Proceeds will benefit Herrick’s Bloom’s Angels, O’Neill Fitness Center Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is inviting families to its new Crosstown Classic basketball series.

The series will offer families an opportunity to cheer on their favorite middle school basketball team while giving back to the community.

The series kicks off with the O’Neill boys’ basketball team playing Herrick at Downers Grove South Sunday, Dec. 6.

Seventh grade will play at 1 p.m., and eighth grade will play at 2:15 p.m.

Herrick girls’ basketball team taking on O’Neill at Downers Grove North Saturday, Feb. 27.

Seventh grade will play at 6:30 p.m., and eighth grade will play at 7:45 p.m.

The Crosstown Classic will feature family games, band performances, an auction and concessions.

Proceeds from the Dec. 6 game will support the O’Neill Fitness Center Fund, and proceeds from the Feb. 27 game will benefit Bloom’s Angels, an organization that supports Herrick families in need.

Admission is $5 per person or $15 per family. Families may purchase tickets at the door or during fall parent-teacher conferences.

Chamber survey indicates fewer paid holidays in 2016 Annual survey compiles hundreds of responses from Illinois businesses of all size The results of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce’s annual holiday survey are in, and employers throughout the state appear to be offering slightly fewer official holidays but slightly more personal time.

According to the Illinois Chamber, results from the 2016 Annual Holiday Survey indicate how Illinois employers and their employees will be handling paid holidays in the upcoming year.

The annual survey compiles hundreds of responses from Illinois businesses of all size and industries.

“The results indicate a change in what kind of paid holiday time is being offered in 2016,” said Todd Maisch, president and CEO of the Illinois Chamber.

Maisch said the survey suggests

that the average number of paid holidays for Illinois workers is 8.8 days, compared with 8.9 in 2015. However, survey responses indicate that the average number of paid personal days is 2.9 days, slightly higher than 2015.

The chamber said its annual holiday survey is used by many Illinois businesses to decide on employees’ holiday benefits.

“It has been regarded as the standard to follow for many years,” Maisch added.

“The results provide a good indicator of what employers will be doing in 2016, and are provided by a good cross section of businesses from across Illinois.”

The first episode, titled “3D Printing at El Sierra,” demonstrates how El Sierra fifth graders are learning engineering, coding, creativity and problem-solving skills using the 3D printer that their teachers, Maura Vivona and Meg Rohlfing, received through an Education Foundation grant this year. The education foundation awards annual grants to teachers and staff who have classroom ideas with a solid plan but lack funding to implement them.

Project proposals must align with District 58’s curriculum goals and have measurable outcomes, among other requirements. This year, the foundation awarded 22 grant projects totaling more than $22,000. This month, “A Glance at our Grants” will release its second episode, called “Novel Ideas at Belle Aire.” The episode will showcase how Belle Aire teacher Patricia Miller is using her grant funding to motivate her sixth graders to read and discuss more books.
