To honor area veterans and promote the annual community Veterans Day Ceremony were the primary reasons the village of Westmont put together a new exhibit on display at village hall.

The veterans exhibit, created by local veterans Frank Trout and Paul Elias and Westmont Communications Director Larry McIntyre, includes military artifacts dating back to World War II, antique and rare photos of Westmont-area veterans, and even a Purple Heart medal.

“This is a great way to honor our veterans,” said Trout, who served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

“This is important so that people

of all generations don’t forget the sacrifice made by these men and women.”

Some of the more unique artifacts on display include an antique Navy cap and Vietnam-era army helmet, armed forces poster from the 1950s, flags from various branches of the armed forces, naval challenge coins, a confirmation certificate for duty in the Arctic Circle, U.S. Coast Guard jacket and cap, dog tags, and a Christmas card sent from a veteran to his family in 1944.

The exhibit, located on the second floor of Westmont Village Hall, 31 W. Quincy St., will be on display through the end of the year. Residents can view the exhibit during regular business hours, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

veterans who have provided materials for the display include in addition to Trout and Elias, both veterans of the U.S. Army, other Westmont-area veterans who contributed artifacts to the display include: Nick Wienert (U.S. Navy), Huw Winston (U.S. Army), James Fitzgerald (U.S. Coast Guard, active duty), Dante Ruffolo (U.S. Army), Tony Pacheco (U.S. Army), Mike Chorney (U.S. Army) and Harry Lesner (U.S. Navy).

“We want to thank everyone who has contributed to the display thus far as well as encourage other veterans to provide artifacts for the exhibit,” Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter said in a news release, noting that the village will also host a Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 11 at Ty Warner Park, located at Blackhawk and Plaza drives.

The American Legion, with the assistance of the Westmont Park District, will host the 11 a.m. ceremony.

Mayor proclaims Nov. 5 Jack Mueller Day in Woodridge Proclamation honors area World War II veteran

Mayor Gina Cunningham proclaimed Nov. 5, 2015, Jack Mueller Day in the village of Woodridge.

The proclamation, read during the Nov. 5 village board meeting, honors the World War II veteran, who enlisted in the Navy in June 1943 – just one month after graduating high school. Mueller became a member of the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion and after becoming a Carpenter’s Mate Second Class he was sent to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The Woodridge veteran was

assigned to the 142nd Navy Construction Battalion, where he and his fellow soldiers built a naval distribution base, barracks housing and airstrips in the early stages of battle.

The village said in a release that its proclamation honored Mueller’s brave service duringWorldWar II and acknowledged his “valiant efforts in defending citizens’ freedoms and in building a more peaceful world.”

The Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club announced last week that the DuPage Senior Citizen Council is the recipient of a $10,000 grant, which the group awards annually.

“We want to take this opportunity to congratulate the DuPage Senior Citizens Council,” Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club President Laura Hill said in a release. “We know that our $10,000 grant will go a long way to help the DuPage Senior Citizens Council provide the resources necessary to assist seniors in the Downers Grove Area.”

More than 20 local charities in the Downers Grove area applied for the $10,000 grant. Applicants were judged on a variety of criteria, including the relativity of the project to the mission of the Downers Grove Junior Woman’s

Club, which is service toward women, children and individuals in need within the community.

Three finalists were selected and asked to present at the DGJWC’s Aug. 18 meeting. At the September general meeting, the DGJWC membership voted on the grant recipient.

The DuPage Senior Citizens Council is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3), volunteer driven organization that has provided meals and other types of support to DuPage County seniors and their families since 1975. DSCC is the designated “meals on wheels” provider in DuPage County. Annually, DSCC serves more than 3,500 seniors and delivers more than 200,000 meals, provides 130,000 well-being checks and completes more than 1,000 home repair projects.

T he DuPage Senior Citizens Council is grateful to be the recipient of the Downers Grove Junior Woman s Club grant, said Executive Director Marylin Krolak.

O ur organization is facing the strong probability of funding cuts from the State of Illinois, and the grant funds from the Downers Grove Junior Woman s Club will go a long way to help the elderly live safely in their own homes and provide them with the resources necessary to maintain their independence, as well as their physical and mental health.

During the club’s award ceremony, Kelsey Austin, a member and past president of the DGJWC said the grant is a product of teamwork and dedication among DGJWC members.

“It is so heartwarming to see our hard work and effort through the years be put to such a deserving cause,” she said.

Metra shutdown averted with PTC-deadline extension

Metra trains will continue to run next year after Congress voted last month to extend the Positive Train Control deadline.

September, Metra sent a letter to Congress stating that the agency wouldn’t be able to meet the deadline until 2019.

Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway, which operate Metra’s Union Pacific and BNSF lines, echoed that sentiment. Without the technology in place, Metra would have had to stop running all passenger trains after the December deadline.

On Sept. 30, Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pennsylvania, introduced House Resolution 3651, which would extend the deadline to Dec. 31, 2018. It would also give the U.S. Secretary of Transportation the authority to extend the deadline by two more years if a transit agency can prove that “technical, programmatic or operational challenges,” such as technology and funding issues prevented it

from fully implementing PTC. On Oct. 23, Shuster introduced House Resolution 3819, which included the language from the earlier resolution into a larger package of transportation-related measures.

The law passed the House and Senate, and President Barack Obama signed it Oct. 29.

In a statement to the press, Metra Executive Director Don Orseno

said he was grateful that the service shutdown was averted.

“We would like to thank Senators Durbin and Kirk and Representatives Quigley, Lipinski and Dold in particular, as well as the entire Metra congressional delegation, for their unending support during this critical time,” he said. “As always, Metra remains committed to implementing PTC as quickly and safely as we can.”

With attention to women’s issues and gender-based inequality becoming more prominent in the last few years, many of us have asked the question: Is there still a wage gap between men and women?

Despite the fact that I am a woman, and so have my own biases toward the question, it is clear to me that the answer is yes – the wage gap is not a myth.

Some have argued that because women tend to take time off for raising children and pregnancy, the difference in compensation is justifiable. Others point to the belief that women aren’t as aggressive as their male counterparts when negotiating salaries.

According to an article by Harvard Business Review, research shows that women are more reticent than men to negotiate their salary offers.

The article states that this reticence is based on an accurate read of the social environment.

“Women get a nervous feeling about negotiating for higher pay because they are intuiting – correctly – that self-advocating for higher pay would present a socially difficult situation for them – more so than for men.”

These are just some of the arguments that I’ve heard time and time again when the topic of equal pay between men and women is brought up.

To be clear, I’m not talking about the

wage gap between a woman who has only worked, say, five years and a man who’s worked 15. This example of a difference in pay is presumably based on experience and should be factored into hiring decisions. I’m talking about situations where a man and a woman with the same education and applying for the same position, yet the male employee is much more likely to be paid more.

The wage gap is a large area of concern for feminists because it’s an issue that has gone on for decades and received little redress. In a Time Magazine article from August, the author, Kerri Anne Renzulli, points out that some studies don’t take into consideration the fact that women do take more time off from work due to pregnancy and child care or that women tend to go into lower-paying fields. However, Renzulli notes that the gap still wouldn’t disappear completely. “You still wouldn’t get to zero.”

The gap would shrink to about 93 to 95 cents for white women, according to the article. Without this adjustment, statistics show that women make about 77 cents to every dollar a man makes.

And while the gap has narrowed since the 1970s, it does still exist – despite those who argue against to the contrary.

The gap is even larger for women of color. According to a study done by the American Association of University Women, Hispanic women were only paid 54 percent of a white man’s

earnings in 2014. African American women were paid 63 percent, and white women were paid 78 percent of a white man’s earnings.

Even when all factors are equal, compensation is not. A 2014 study from the U.S. Department of Labor showed that there is still a 7 percent discrepancy between men and women with equal educations and the same career choices. Additionally, the gap increases as women age. On average, women under 35, or “millenials,” earn 90 percent of what men their age earn.

When education and career choice are the exact same, the wage gap still exists. And while it is clear that pay discrimination is a problem and steps have been taken to address it, why do women still find they are taking home less than male colleagues?

According to the National Organization for Women, the wage gap is not expected to close until 2058 at the current rate of increase. That means 2015 high school graduates will be 61 before they can expect equal pay.

During President Obama’s 2014 state of the union address, he expressed his own feelings on the gender wage gap. “I firmly believe when women succeed, America succeeds,” Obama said. “Today, women make up about half of our workforce, but they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, that is wrong, and in 2014, it’s an embarrassment.”

Later in 2014, on Equal Pay Day, President Obama signed two executive orders intended to narrow the gap between wages for different genders.

During his remarks at the event, Obama said on the gender gap, “It’s not a myth; it’s math.”

Well put, Mr. President.

Rauner’s amendatory veto strips away 24-hour skilled medical care and replaces it with a few hours a week of housekeeping chores. This move is strictly about money and politics, and not about the care needs of elderly people. With one pen stroke, elderly people and their families lost the right to choose the best health care setting based on their individual health care

needs and family circumstances.

The Health Care Council of Illinois calls on members of the General Assembly to override this Amendatory Veto and uphold dignified medical care for our most vulnerable citizens.

Charlie Donovan, a 2015 Westmont graduate, died suddenly Thursday night.

Donovan, was recruited to the University of Michigan out of high school, but had deferred his enrollment because of a bout with mono over the summer. He was the 2015 Gatorade Illinois Baseball Player of the Year and was the three-time Voyager Media Player of the Year.

He was drafted in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

“I am heartbroken over the whole thing and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and the Westmont community.

We are a tight bunch,” said Westmont coach D.J. Cocks. “We

are mourning right now. It has been tough for everybody.

“It was a rough day at school.

He had already graduated and you could still see the effect he had on the kids. It was amazing to me just the kind of human being he was. I spent a lot of time with him and got to know him a lot being his physical education teacher and baseball coach for four years and I just can’t believe this happened.”

On the field, Donovan is the career Westmont leader in 24 categories, including runs scored (172), hits (181), batting average (.479), extra base hits (81), assists (325) and team wins (88). Cocks said the team’s win record was the stat Donovan was most proud of.

“What he did for the team was something that I just never could have comprehended,” Cocks said. “I knew he was a good player when he came in,

but I never knew what we would do. What he did his junior year when we finished third in state is legendary. He carried us with the bat, his defense and with his arm to shut the door as a pitcher.

You don’t get players that can dominate all three phases like that. We were really blessed to have Charlie in the program and to currently have Joe.” Joe Donovan is a junior at Westmont and played with Charlie last season.

Joe joined nearly 50 current and former players at Westmont’s baseball field Friday for a memorial held at shortstop.

“Joe wanted to just be with the guys and just play catch and just be with them,” Cocks said. “He never will get over this but from our perspective all we can do is to help him through it. It will be a struggle daily. There is nothing we can say or do to make the situation better, but we can just help him move on with his life in a way that will honor Charlie and I know Joe will do that.”

Benet falls to St. Francis in supersectional

As it seems every season, the Illinois High School Association makes sure the same dominant teams don’t meet in the state finals too much.

As has been witnessed in the past, the powers that be stack teams in the same sectional or supersectional so only one earns the trip to the state finals.

That was what happened again this season.

Benet, the defending Class 4A state champions were eliminated from the state playoffs in the Bolingbrook Supersectional 25-21, 22-25, 22-25 by defending Class 3A champions St. Francis. The Spartans are in Class 4A this season because of an enrollment increase, but would have moved up anyway

because of the new IHSA rule that sees successful private school teams go up in class after accumulating a system of points based on having multiple years of success.

Prior to facing St. Francis, Benet (37-3) knocked off another statetitle contender in perennial power Mother McAuley25-14, 25-21 for the Lyons Township Sectional title.

“That is a great match, McAuley is one of the best teams in the nation,” said Benet coach Brad Baker. “We knew they were going to play well and we had to go above what they were going to do. Whenever we play them, it is a high intensity match.

“We are always going to play is some really fun matches during the year and if we have to play in them earlier and earlier, that’s what we have to do. You feel bad for McAuley because they are a state quality team as well.”

Tiffany Clark led the Redwings

with 10 kills for the match.

“We keep seeing this great team earlier and earlier [in the playoffs],” Clark said. “We have a lot of people that were on the team from last year and we knew how intense it was going to be from that game, so we went out swinging. They’re a great team with a lot of skilled players and we knew it was going to be a fight.”

Veronica Snelling added eight kills. Sara Nielsen paced the team with 31 assists and 11 digs. Nielsen also dished 31 assists. Lauren Barnes finished with 17 digs.

Barnes took over the libero spot earlier in the season, as Clark moved to hitter.

Clark, a libero for her club team, will resume her libero role next season at the University of Michigan, but was happy to make

Locals have success at state

PEORIA – For the first time ever, both the Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North boys cross country teams advanced to the state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria in the same season.

So, it was fitting that at the finish line, South’s top runner Jack LaLonde and North’s top runner Alec Danner were competing for position.

LaLonde nipped Danner at the end, placing 17th in 14:42, while Danner was 19th in 14:43.

“Props to LaLonde, he got me at the end,” Danner said. “He had a really good breakout race. It is pretty honorable to have both North and South representing Downers Grove in such a positive way and I think it will rub off on our schools and emulate that character that if you work hard, you can get where you want to go. I respect this Downers South team and I’m assuming

they do us. It is just a good mutual relationship.”

Individually, Danner was pleased with race.

“I got out way too slow in the first 400,” he said. “I really had to work my way up that first straight away to get with the upper group. I was looking for top 10, but I will take AllState.”

LaLonde joins Danner as an AllState runner.

“Getting All-State was the goal,” LaLonde said. “I would have liked to have been a little higher, but the start of this race is pretty chaotic, but I finished pretty good.”

Not only was LaLonde All-State, but his 14:42 is a new South school record for three miles.

“I am pretty happy about that,” he said. “The guy who had the record ran a 14:45 here.”

As a team, South placed 12th as LaLonde was followed by scorers Stephen Pipilas (42nd, 15:02), Joey Eterno (121st, 15:37), Max O’Meara (138th, 15:47) and Alan Zhou (156th, 15:56). Austin Rutkowski (162nd,

16:00) and Eddie Siuda (175th, 16:09) also competed.

North’s team placed 17th.

Following Danner were Jacob Ridderhoff (82nd, 15:23), Ryan Birkmeier (122nd, 15:38), Nick Chudzik (125th, 15:38) and Andrew Marek (153rd, 15:54). Sam McCool (186th, 16:17) and Matt Moravec (197th, 16:26).

•On the girls side, Benet placed 18th as a team with 368 points.

Clare McCabe placed 45th in 17:38 to lead the Redwings.

“This was a lot better than last year,” McCabe said. “It was a fast race, the pace felt like we were pushing it, but I think I handled it well. Coming in, I just wanted to do better than last year and PR, so I was happy with that.”

Mae Tully was the second Benet runner in 46th place with a time of 17:39.

As a freshman, it was Tully’s first time at state.

While Benet dropped only three matches all season, it was a struggle early to get to the point of competing in the state series.

“The way we were playing at our tournament at the beginning of the year,” Baker said. “If we don’t make improvements, we are not here.

That is on the kids, they wanted to work hard to get better.”

• Benet football was eliminated from the playoffs after a 35-17 loss at Cary-Grove.

We all signed a contract before he left for school a few years ago stating that we would pay for school and provide him a car to drive as long as he maintained good grades and behaved in a respectful and mature manner.

Over the last couple of years, his grades have dropped and he’s been acting more and more disrespectful. We learned recently that he even told a family friend that he hated us. My husband went to confront him about his behavior and this statement, and

through on the agreement, it hurts you because you’re human — and a good mom.

It may seem extreme to some folks, but what you guys did wasn’t capricious or arbitrary. There was a deal in place, and he knew the terms of the contract. If someone worked for me and did or said or tweeted the kind of stuff you’re talking about, I’d fire them on the spot. This kid has got to learn how to behave in the culture and that there are consequences for breaking your word and violating contracts.

But here’s some good news for you, Carla. You married a real man — a strong and loving man.

What he did took a ton of strength and courage. There are so many wimps in our culture today, but you married a good one. And whether this kid realizes it or not, he’s got one heck of a dad who really cares.

I’ll give you a prediction. Within

30 days, your kid comes home wagging his tail behind him. Even if he’s stubborn, being hungry and strapped for cash — along with losing his wheels — will solve a lot of that. From diapers until they’re out of the house, and even after they’re out of the house, you make a lot of those kinds of calls if you’re a good parent.

Pursue nursing another way Dear Dave, I’m 45 years old and a single mom. I have a decent job, but I want to go back to school to become a nurse. The money would be much better than what I make now, but I’d have to take out student loans to make this happen. Is it worth the risk?

Susan Dear Susan, Is nursing a field worth pursuing, especially when it is something you love and would increase your income significantly? You bet! Nursing is a very honorable profession.

Am I going to tell you to take

out loans to make it happen?

Absolutely not!

Save as much as you possibly can first — even if it’s just a little each month. Then, I want you to look into Pell Grants, traditional and non-traditional scholarships and what I call the “indentured servitude” program.

There’s still something of a nurse shortage in this country, and there are hospitals and drug companies that will agree to pay your school bills if you go to work for them afterwards for a specific number of years.

I’m proud of you, Susan. Gaining knowledge and improving yourself and your career prospects are all good things.

But stay away from student loan debt. It’s bad and unnecessary!
