Villages prepare for Halloween Area police departments set trick-or-treating times, offer safety tips By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @DownersGrvBugle

With little ghosts and goblins preparing for the holiday, the village of Downers Grove, Westmont and Woodridge are reminding residents of the official trick-or-treating hours and providing tips on how to stay safe this halloween.

In Downers Grove, there will be no mandated hours for trick-ortreating on Oct. 31. However, the Downers Grove Police Department recommended gathering candy during daylight hours.

Additionally, police said there will be a curfew in place for anyone under 17 years of age. Minors are prohibited from being on the street after 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

TheWestmont Police Department is encouraging residents to trick-ortreat from 2 to 7 p.m. on Halloween and follow safety tips such as wearing reflective clothing and exercising caution when crossing streets.

“We wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween,” Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said.

“We ask everyone to drive safely and be mindful of all the pedestrians on Halloween.”

Additionally, police said trick-ortreaters should be careful of masks and costumes that can impair their vision or ability to move, travel in groups, and parents should check children’s candy prior to consumption.

In Woodridge, trick-or-treating hours are 3 to 7 p.m. on Halloween.

The Woodridge Police Department is also encouraging the community to follow simple safety tips.

Trick-or-treaters should go out with friends and family, be cautious near streets and never enter a stranger’s house. Drivers should obey the speed limit and be alert for pedestrians. The department said any community member who observes suspicious or dangerous activity to call 911.

Decorate your costume and treat bag with reflective tape; Choose face paint and makeup rather than masks that block your vision.

If you do choose a mask, it should not obstruct vision; Stay on the sidewalk and watch for cars backing out of driveways; Cross streets at corners using the crosswalks and traffic signals; Do not be distracted by talking on the cell phone while walking near roadways; Only accept treats that are wrapped and securely sealed; and Parents should check treats before they are eaten.

Draft proposes plan to preserve Firefighter receives historically significant structures 2015 Award of Valor By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @DownersGrvBugle

The village of Downers Grove has released a draft report prepared by the Architectural Design Review Board and the Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Historic Preservation that it says will help guide future historic preservation efforts.

The purpose of the report is to provide direction for increasing the number of properties designated as historic landmarks

or districts and avoiding the loss of architecturally significant buildings.

At an Oct. 21 meeting, the ADRB and Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Historic Preservation motioned to approve and forward the draft report to the Downers Grove Village Council.

Village staff will present the final report to the council in early November, according to the village.

The report contains the details and methodology used by the group to prepare an amended

Historic Preservation Ordinance, improve public awareness and develop incentives to encourage property owners to participate in the landmarking process.

Since the subcommittee was established in July, its members and the ADRB have met twice a month.

The village said the group is on track to achieve its goal of delivering proposed recommendations for increasing the number of landmarked properties or districts under the Historic Preservation Ordinance by Oct. 31.

Westmont Fire Department Lt. Josh Turen is among several area first responders to receive the 100 Club of DuPage County’s 2015 Award of Valor.

Turner, along with Elmhurst Police officers John Pacewic and Margaret Hopkins and Oakbrook Terrace officer Jason Sluzewicz, will receive the award during the club’s 33rd Annual Dinner and Awards Night. The dinner, scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Lisle/ Naperville Hilton, recognizes first responders for their acts of courage and heroism.

On April 29, the Westmont Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the King Arthur Court apartment complex. Upon arrival, there was heavy brown smoke and the report of a person still in the apartment.

Turen entered the apartment to search for the victim, but was

forced back by the intense heat.

He retreated from the apartment until a charged hose line was in place. Once in place, fire crews proceeded into the apartment and extinguished the fire.

While the crew was extinguishing the fire, Turen located the victim approximately 12 feet inside the apartment and removed him to safety.

Lisa Savegnago, president of the club, will present the Award of Valor to the recipients.

“It is with great honor to bestow the 2015 Award of Valor to Officers Pacewic, Hopkins, Sluzewicz, and Lt. Turen,” Savegnago said.

“They all put their lives on the line, without hesitation and with courage, to save the life of another. Their leadership and devotion to their duty and their community is unparalleled. They are true heroes.”

Woodridge sets veterans celebration for Nov. 5 As Veterans Day approaches, the village of Woodridge is inviting residents to honor military men and women for their past and present service during a

celebration at Village Hall.

The celebration is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Village Hall, 5 Plaza Drive.

Downers Grove Library earns Readers’ Advisory Services Award The Downers Grove Public Library announced that it has been awarded the first Readers’ Advisory Services Award from the Illinois Library Association Reference Services Forum.

Nominated by library Director Rick Ashton, Book Genie “fulfills a major strategy of our 2012-2014 Strategic Plan, to ‘maintain a focus on books and reading and associated services.’ To accompany and enhance our traditional Readers’ Advisory work, we have developed a new, online, interactive advisory service.”

Highway Department announced last week that it has canceled its monthly electronics recycling program.

Held the third Saturday of every

month, the event allowed residents of Downers Grove Township to drop off unwanted electronics at the highway garage, 318 E. Quincy St., Westmont.

Highway Commissioner Lawrence Anderson said funding issues led to the program’s cancellation.

“Our electronic recycling program has been suspended at this time due to increase in costs,”

Anderson said in a statement.

In a separate release, the village of Westmont said it will work with DuPage County and other entities to identify or establish an electronics recycling program for its residents.

Pumpkin smash is a hit Westmont’s inaugural pumpkin smashing competition encourages composting

The village of Westmont held its inaugural pumpkin smashing competition Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Approximately 100 residents flocked to the corner of Burlington and Cass avenues to watch 12 participants smash pumpkins. The participants were from various local departments and businesses.

In conjunction, families, dressed in costumes walked to the local business as part of the annual Trick or Treat Trail. The People’s Resource Center had their truck collecting food items to help those in need.

The pumpkin smashing competition is a new community wide initiative led by the Environmental Improvement Commission.

Their goal is to encourage residents to properly dispose of pumpkins. The smashed pumpkins will be deposited to The Farm, located at 34 E. 63rd St. in Westmont.

Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter threw the inaugural pumpkin as part of the competition. He, and his fellow contestants went up 25 feet in the air to throw the pumpkins and then they threw

it to a target that was on the ground.

The pumpkin smashes were then judged on three categories: decorations, accuracy and how much the pumpkin splashed.

“I think it was a great event for the children,” said Gunter.

Mary Gabryel, secretary of Westmont’s environmental improvement commission, coordinated with The Farm to compost the pumpkins for local residents. Gabryel also organized the first-ever Pumpkin Smashing Competition.

“The whole week after Halloween you can drop off your pumpkins behind The Farm and they will be recycled,” said Gabryel, “So it’s a full recycling that they grow the pumpkins, they sell the pumpkins and then the pumpkins can be composted back into the land so it’s a full recycling process.”

Gabryel noted that The Farm’s produce is locally grown, so it’s not traveling far and therefore is better for our environment.

Gabryel said that the event focused focused on bringing the community together on recycling and was also nice since the People’s Resource Center was collecting food and other events were also going on.

represented the CUSD201 school district, and was one of the participants of the competition.

“We believe in composting.

We have an outdoor education [class] that recently purchased a compost so our students are fully engaged in that,” said Quattrone.

Even though Quattrone was afraid of going up 25-feet to smash a pumpkin, once she looked down at the crowd gathered she was put at ease because of the applause and smiles.

In the end, Quattrone was named the “Pumpkin Smashing Queen” and Steve Riley, deputy chief of the Westmont Fire Department, was named the “Pumpkin Smashing King.”

North High students recognize Good Sam surgeon, staff with lunch Appreciation lunch held in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month Members of Downers Grove North High School’s marching band arranged an appreciation lunch for an Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital physician and the staff who treated a school secretary for cancer last year.

Students wanted to show their appreciation for Dr. Gale England, the breast surgeon who treated North High’s fine arts department secretary, Pattie DePeder.

Registered nurse Ginger Diven and physicians and associates from the hospital’s Cancer Care Center were also recognized.

“They don’t always know how much they touch people’s lives,” DePeder said. “Being able to say thank you is a big thing.”

The event was arranged by Brayer Teague, chairman of the school’s fine arts department, and food was delivered by Weber Grill restaurant. The lunch took

Parent learning series continues this fall Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will host additional Parent Learning, Assessment and Reporting Mechanism presentations this fall.

These presentations are designed to teach parents about the new SQUIRREL portal, 1:1 device learning, standardsbased learning and longitudinal reporting.

The presentations are open to District 58 parents and no preregistration is required.

Meetings are scheduled for Nov. 4 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Nov. 11 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Nov. 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Dec. 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Dec. 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

District receives highest level of financial recognition The Illinois State Board of Education awarded Downers Grove Grade School District 58 with a Financial Recognition rating on the District’s 2015 School District Financial Profile.

Financial Recognition is the highest financial strength rating

that the ISBE awards. This year marks the 14th consecutive year District 58 achieved this status.

“She became a victim of domestic violence; a thing she taught us all about.”

Those words came from Shaye Soto, a 2015 graduate of Plainfield North High School and former student of Susan Triplett-Cunningham, who was tragically murdered Oct. 20 in what police have called a “domestic-related homicide.”

Soto spoke during a candlelight vigil held at the school in memory of her former teacher. And while the details of her teacher’s death are not yet official, the incident underscores a sobering truth: domestic violence is closer to all of us than we’d like to admit and its victims are often discouraged from seeking help.

Police suspect that Cunningham’s husband fatally stabbed his wife before walking into traffic and taking his own life. This tragedy is all too real for the friends and family of the victim, yet its timing and impact provide an opportunity for all people to reflect on a problem that is all too common throughout our society.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The month is a time when people across the country unite to remember and empower victims, while raising awareness of the effects domestic violence has on

families across the country. Officially, the month is centered around three themes: mourning those who have died, celebrating those who have survived and connecting those who are working to end domestic violence.

“During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we reaffirm our dedication to forging an America where no one suffers the hurt and hardship that domestic violence causes -- and we recommit to doing everything in our power to uphold the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse,” President Obama said Sept. 30 in a proclamation commemorating National Domestic Violence Awareness.

In 1994, congress passed the Violence Against Women Act, symbolizing that dedication and bringing to light the pervasiveness of domestic violence in America. The act also set aside funds for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women and allowed for civil redress in cases that go unprosecuted.

But sadly, the act has neither eradicated domestic violence from our culture nor convinced some that it is a serious problem -- as demonstrated by the political fight to reauthorize the VAWA in 2013 because of its inclusion of American Indians, illegal immigrants and homosexuals.

Domestic violence and abuse affect all types of people and comes in many forms: verbal, emotional, psychological, sexual and physical. According to

statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes, and 1 in 5 women have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner at some point in their life.

Men are also the victims of domestic violence, with 1 in 4 suffering physical violence and 1 in 7 suffering severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Additionally, 72 percent of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner and 94 percent of those victims are female.

Despite these tragic statistics, our society has chosen to turn its head and ignore this troubling and inconvenient truth.

We do this by still praising athletes who have been convicted of rape or spousal abuse or by choosing to forget their crimes, as long as they continue to perform at a high level. We do this by ignoring signs of abuse at work or in other public settings, telling ourselves that it’s a “personal” matter and failing to listen to victim’s cries for help. We do this by perpetuating a culture of patriarchy that teaches suppression and subjugation of qualities deemed “feminine,” soliciting from some a violent reaction when the realities of the 21st century clash with social “norms” that have been reinforced from a young age.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month but domestic violence knows no boundaries. I choose to confront this ever-present problem by being aware of its existence. Will you?

Class 7a In a class that has rivaled, if not passed Class 8A at times over the years, Class 7A again features some of the state’s elite programs with the likes of Mt. Carmel, Maine South and Lincoln-Way East.

This season, it is Glenbard West at the top of the bracket. The Hitters posted their fourth undefeated regular season in the past five seasons.

With Mt. Carmel (No. 16 seed) and Lincoln-Way East (No. 14) coming in at 7-2, the bracket could go a lot of directions and will be entertaining.

Benet Record: 7-2 Consecutive appearances: 4 Week 1: No. 21 St. Charles North at No. 12 Benet – (Benedictine University), 1 PM The Redwings are ready and battle-tested after going through the tough East Suburban Catholic Conference, their two losses coming at the hands of Nazareth and Niles Notre Dame.

It will be a tough matchup for the Trojans as Libertyville (9-0) averages 42.7 points per game, while allowing only 10.8. On the flip side, Downers North is one of two teams in the bracket that has allowed more points per game than it has scored with a -5.6 ratio. The Trojans have scored 17.9 points per game, while allowing 23.4.

The Wildcats are led by Northwestern-recruit quarterback Riley Lees and one of his top targets in Henry Schmidt.

Benet tennis duo finishes 4-2 in state

The Benet duo of Allison Bartley and Katie Telford had a strong showing at the state tennis meet.

The duo went 4-2, advancing to the sixth consolation round. They opened with wins of Hononegah (6-0, 6-1) and O’Fallon (6-2, 6-2) before falling to Glenbrook North (6-3, 6-2).

They came back with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Belleville East and a 6-2, 7-6 win over Naperville North before falling to New Trier 7-6, 6-2.

Collis, a three-year varsity starter, while Fotis Kokosioulis gets the bulk of the work on the ground.

It is the experience from Collis and coach Dave Inserra, who has been to six state title games, winning three, that makes Maine South believe it can win any game.

The Hawks pose a total playoff record of 57-25, while at 0-4, the Tigers have yet to win a post season contest.

Benet beat Lindblom 8-0. Daniel Morefield scored three goals, while Ben Kelly, Jason Rowaiye, Connor Mote, Eddie Fulton and Dominic Mele also scored goals.

The Redwings were upset though in the regional final, 1-0 in penalty kicks to Mt. Carmel in Class 2A.

Locals lead Lewis volleyball to national ranking

The Lewis University women’s volleyball team has had a good deal of success this year at 211, 9-0 in the GLVC and has been doing so with multiple locals on the team, including three from the Voyager Media coverage area.

One is senior Alexis Davito, a Lockport native, who is in her fifth year with the team.

“Being the only fifth-year senior is weird but it is kind of nice,” Davito said. “Having a lot of freshmen and new blood on the court and the chemistry and nice.

I think we have a good chance to do some good things.”

After years of looking up to seniors, she is now that leader. She hopes she can have the positive impact on others that those before her have had on her.

“I’m trying,” Davito said of being a leader. “Our team is unique and everyone tries to take their own leadership. I think the program has really helped me grow so I just want everyone else to do the same.”

Davito has been able to play in front of friends and family over the years and she would have it no other way.

“The parent base is amazing so we always have fans,” Davito said.

“So being local is great because we always feel like we’re home.

We’re never far away. My brother goes here as well, so the whole

family is here. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. I always have someone here supporting me.”

While Davito has had a good amount of success while on campus at Lewis, there is one more thing she would like to accomplish before her career is done after the season.

“Making it to the Sweet 16 would be great,” Davito said. “Since I’ve been here, we haven’t made it out of first round of regionals and it is about time we do. I think we just need to want it and play that way.”

For the season Davito leads the team with 227 kills and a .332 hitting percentage, along with 37 aces, also a team high.

With Davito finishing up her career, the future of the Flyers’ offense may be Plainfield freshman Elizabeth Hyland.

Hyland has come out of the gates fast, starting as a freshman, playing all six rotations. She has 225 kills, 16 aces, 242 digs and 34 blocks.

“I’ve had so much support from not only the coaches but the entire team,” Hyland said. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without all my teammates on the sidelines.”

Even though she has started from the beginning, there have been adjustments.

“It is a really fast pace,” Hyland said. “And just learning how Lewis does everything. But the girls have

A big thrill for the freshman is playing in front of her home crowd at Lewis.

“It’s awesome, I love it,” Hyland said. “I love looking up and seeing familiar faces in the crowd. I don’t think I could go to a place far away where my family wouldn’t be able to go. It is great to have them up

Davito feels she doesn’t need to do much mentoring with Hyland.

“She is actually my little sister on the team,” Davito said of Hyland.

“I think she is incredible. I don’t need to do much leading with her.

She kind of takes it upon herself to do it herself. She does a great job of not only watching girls in front of her but establishing herself.”

The Lions have had success after losing quarterback Alec VanVolkengerg to a torn ACL and replacing him with jack-of-alltrades back up Mark McGrath.

Lisle comes into the game averaging 29.2 points per game, while allowing 12.3.

Byron (7-2) comes in with only an 8.4 differential, scoring 33.1 points and allowing 24.7.

A win would most likely get the Lions a rematch with Wilmington, who beat Lisle 21-7 earlier in the season.

Moving to the back row, junior defensive specialist Carolyn Nojiri of Downers Grove has been happy with the season so far. For the year she has 48 digs.

“It’s been good,” Nojiri said. “To have two freshmen setters, it has been really good to see how they have meshed with the hitters.”

While she has seen some action this volleyball season, Nojiri is most known for being a two-sport collegiate athlete, as she is also a softball player and had the second highest average on the team last year.

But, playing two sports doesn’t come easy.

“It has its ups and downs,” Nojiri said. “I haven’t been to a lot of softball stuff lately because it has been hectic with volleyball. But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is the best of both worlds to play both of the sports I love.”

Playing two sports does make things harder in the fall though as she misses the fall softball season.

“It does because I am missing the fall season of softball because I’m in season for volleyball,” Nojiri said. “But I work my butt off in the offseason for the upcoming season, so I don’t feel I am behind, actually.”
