Students pitch bright future for Downers Grove South Earth Action Club seeks grant for solar panels, sustainable curriculum By jonathan samples managing editor

A group of Downers Grove South students took their concerns about the environment to the District 99 Board of Education earlier this

month and proposed a plan to make their school slightly more energy independent.

Several members of the school’s Earth Action Club gave a presentation at the board of education’s Oct. 5 workshop. The students worked out a plan to bring a solar power system to the school that would not only

help lower energy bills, but also place solar energy at the center of Downers Grove South’s identity and curriculum.

“In order to do our part to find a solution to the energy crisis, we want to install solar panels,” senior Swathi Pillalamarri told the board. “Not only is this beneficial to our planet, but it will also help us in educating our school and our community on environmental sustainability.”

The proposed system is identical to a system installed at Eisenhower Junior High School in Darien, which consists of four 250watt polycrystalline panels and produces 93.03 kilowatt-hours per month. Other solar schools in the area include El Sierra Elementary School, Henry Puffer Elementary School and O’Neill Middle School, all of which are in Downers Grove Grade School District 58.

The system would cost $8,000.

But for their part, the club is already pursuing a grant that would help cover the majority of the costs.

Junior Shana Johnson said the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation offers a grant that would cover 90 percent of the proposed system.

“We will turn in our grant in February and learn the results within two months of turning in the grant,” she said during the presentation.

In order to receive the grant, Downers Grove South has to meet several qualifications.

Senior Bobby Major said the school has already met the grant’s first major criteria: making an effort to become more energy efficient. He described the school’s use of motion-sensor lights in the hallways, as well as transitioning to energy-efficient lighting in the main gym and auditorium, as examples.

The grant also requires the school to make an effort to educate its students and the community about renewable energy. The Earth Action

Club held an event in March on Earth Day that not only helped the school meet this requirement, but also introduced Major to the group.

“I joined after the Energy Slam because I was intrigued by the energy crisis and what I could do to make a difference,” he said.

Additionally, the panels would have to be installed on the south side of the school and be in a “highly visible” area in order to promote solar energy. If the school received the grant, it would also be required to hold a solar celebration to unveil the solar panels, according to Major. The students added that the installation of solar panels would benefit science curriculum at South.

Physics teacher Stephen Zownorega spoke on behalf of the school’s science department and agreed with the students. In addition to the department currently looking at ways to revamp its curriculum to include more engineering aspects, Zownorega said students at South have already seen educational benefits from clean-energy events such as Energy Slam.

“I would like to spend a lot more of my time in my classroom with something like this,” he said. “This panel also presented to our science department, and the excitement that came out of our biology, chemistry and physics classes also showed something that can be included in the classroom if we get these panels installed.”

Following the presentation, board of education members voiced their support of the project and urged the students to consider seeking the additional required funds from the district’s education foundation.

“This is a great presentation, and we’re very excited,” Board President Nancy Kupka said. “We’d like to ask you to come back to either celebrate your grant or commiserate, but there’s always money somewhere else.”

Positive Train Control extension remains uncertain for Metra

A Metra shutdown remains a real possibility, as Congress continues to debate the details of the Positive Train Control mandate extension.

As previously reported, the U.S. Congress passed a law in 2008 requiring all passenger railroad systems, including Metra, to install Positive Train Control technology by Dec. 31, 2015.

PTC is a system that would be able to automatically stop trains under certain circumstances, potentially preventing accidents.

But because of the scope and the expense involved, regulatory delays, as well as the fact that much of PTC technology had to be developed from scratch, Metra would need until 2019 to actually get the system up and running.

On Sept. 10, the agency officially announced that, if the deadline isn’t extended, it would have to stop running trains beginning of next year.

During the Oct. 15 meeting of the Metra Board of Directors, Sam Smith, director of government and community relations for Metra, said legislation extending the deadline until the end of 2018 was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, at the moment, the House and the Senate are negotiating the language of the resolution, leaving its passage uncertain.

PTC uses GPS data, wayside track monitoring sensors and track dispatch systems to alert locomotive computers of any road hazards. If a train travels faster than the speed restrictions allow, or if it approaches an obstacle on the track, the system instructs the engineer to slow down. If the engineer doesn’t slow down, the train is automatically stopped.

The PTC mandate affects all freight and passenger rail lines, but the Dec. 31 deadline only applies to lines used by passenger trains and freight trains that carry hazardous chemicals.

Smith told the Metra Board of Directors that House Resolution 3651 was introduced in the House on Sept 30. It is sponsored by Rep. Bill Shuster, R- Pennsylvania, who chairs the House’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

It would extend the deadline by three years and give the U.S. Secretary of Transportation the authority to extend the deadline by two more years if a railroad or a transit agency can prove that “technical, programmatic or operational challenges,” such as technology and funding issues prevented it from fully implementing PTC. At the moment, Smith said the House and the Senate are negotiating the language.

“Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Peter DeFazio have some issues with the criteria,” he said.

He also said Boxer stated publicly that Senate Democrats won’t vote for the extension until the House of Representatives passes a transportation funding bill.

“Does Senator Boxer realize that there’s no storage capacity in ports that [cargo] back-ups she’d cause if she stops this bill,” Metra board director John Plante asked.

Metra’s Executive Director Don Orseno said Metra has been preparing for the possibility that service will have to stop. He said agency officials are currently deep in discussions with Metra labor unions and attorneys. No details beyond that were provided during the meeting.

Meanwhile, Metra said it is continuing to work on getting PTC in place. During the Oct. 15 meeting, the board approved contracts for control system modifications and the urchase of wayside track monitoring sensors Metra’s 2016 budget, which was officially unveiled during the Oct. 15 meeting, allocates $34 million out of $106.4 million in capital project budget to go toward implementing PTC.

The BNSF and Union Pacific railway companies are responsible for installing PTC on their lines, but Metra is required to help the railroads cover the costs. According to board documents, as of September 2015, PTC installation was 96 percent complete on BNSF Line and 55 percent complete on Union Pacific lines.

Metra currently expects to begin installing the technology on the lines it owns sometime during the first quarter of next year, and the technology is to be fully installed throughout the system by mid 2017. Once the technology is installed, each line would go through about a year of testing.

Orseno told the board that he remained hopeful that the extension would pass.

“I think [legislators] understand way more in the last 30 days than they did in the last seven years,” he said. “I don’t think that anyone doesn’t understand the ramifications.”

Smith said that he also remained hopeful.

“I think everyone [in the U.S. government] is confident something gets done before the end of the month,” he sad.

Metra riders will have to pay a quarter more per trip if the proposed 2016 budget passes without any changes.

The commuter transit agency’s board of directors unveiled its budget for 2016 during its Oct. 15 meeting.

The board will vote on whether to approve that budget during its Nov. 11 meeting.

The budget proposal calls for a 25 cent increase for oneway tickets, while prices for 10-ride tickets will increase by $1.75 and monthly passes will increase by $2.50.

For riders eligible for reduced fares, the price of 10-ride tickets will increase by 75 cents, while the prices of monthly passes will increase by $1.25.

The agency’s budget documents also indicate that $15.6 million of total fare revenue will go towards capital projects, though it’s not clear how much of that number will come from the fare increase.

Metra will hold a total of eight public hearings about the budget.

Three of them will be held in Cook County, one at Chicago’s Union Station, one at the Hanover Park Police Department and one at Homewood Village Hall.

All three of those hearings will be held Nov. 4, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

A new partnership between the Downers Grove Music Club and the Downers Grove Public Library stresses the importance of music appreciation in the community.

Complete with a grand piano and a year of musical performances, the Downers Grove Music Club - Downers Grove Public Library Music Series kicked off earlier this month and will run through May 2016.

Downers Grove Music Club purchased a Feurich Model 218 Concert I Grand Piano and donated the instrument, bench and accessories to the library. Developed in France

by Clair and Stephen Paulello, the piano features stainless Paulello-string-wire, uniquely constructed hammer heads

by Renner of Stuttgart, with AA-rated quality felts from the Wurzen factory. The piano also has a new invention, a fourth pedal - the Pédal Harmonique that produces an effect similar to the resonance of a concert hall.

A free, inaugural piano concert was held Oct. 6 to start the music series. Musicians performed various selections on the piano and attendees were treated to refreshments during a postperformance reception.

Last year, as part of the music club’s investment in community arts programs, the group funded the restoration of the concert piano at Downers Grove South High School and the purchase of two new digital pianos at Downers Grove North High School.

‘Lincoln Hotel’ horrifies visitors with pop-culture theme The “Lincoln Hotel” in Downers Grove will be welcoming guests Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 for the second installment of the Downers Grove Park District’s Suburban Horror Story.

The Lincoln Hotel is held at the Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave., Downers Grove, and will be open from 7:30-10:30 p.m. both nights.

The haunted house is open to anyone age 10 and above. This year’s haunted house theme is inspired by the new season of the popular

television show “American Horror Story,” which is set in LA’s Hotel Cortez and takes inspiration from classic horror movies such as “The Shining” and the recent “1408.”

Guests wishing to spend a terrifying evening at the Lincoln Hotel will be able to take a selfguided tour for $8 per person and explore the Great Ballroom, guest rooms and the hotel kitchen, among other themed rooms.

“With a building that dates back to 1867 some really interesting

stories may have happened here, so it’s easy to let your imagination run and create some really fun and creepy rooms for our guests to explore,” said Kari Gregori, special events supervisor at the Downers Grove Park District.

Experience thrills, chills at Woodridge haunted forest walk With 71 acres of scary woods and twisting pathways, Hawthorne Hill Woods will play host to the Woodridge Park District’s annual Haunted Forest Walk Oct. 23 and Oct. 24.

The haunted forest walk evening hours are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. An afternoon walk through the haunted forest for young children and the faint of heart is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Living Cemetery welcomes ghosts from Downers Grove’s past The Main Street Cemetery in downtown Downers Grove is the final resting place for almost 100 of the village’s early pioneers.

Area residents and students will bring the stories of the village’s founders to life during the Downers Grove Historical Society’s annual

Living Cemetery event, scheduled for Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The actors will be in dressed period costumes and re-enacting the lives of the village’s early settlers. The family friendly event is designed to teach visitors about the lives and times of these

historical figures.

Once a cow pasture, the 159-year-old cemetery occupies a small, half-acre of open green space on Main Street in Downers Grove and is one of the few cemeteries located in a downtown business district.

Friends of the Library to host October book sale October 18-24, 2015 is National Friends of Libraries Week and the Downers Grove Friends of the Library is celebrating National Friends of Libraries Week with its 10th annual book sale, titled “Cooks, Crooks and Other Books,” scheduled for Oct. 23-25.

The book sale will take place in the Meeting Room at the Downers Grove Library, 1050 Curtiss St. Books for sale include biographies, cooking, diet and exercise, fiction, gardening, history, juvenile, mysteries, self-help, travel and large type. DVDs and Blu Rays will also be sold. All titles are priced very

affordably. While past FOL book sales have concentrated solely on travel and cook books, this year’s sale will offer all kinds of books.

The book sale will occur Oct. 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Oct. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Oct. 25 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Income earned from the sale will be used to fund projects supported by the FOL, including prizes for the summer reading programs, the monthly “Adventures in Travel” series, and miscellaneous equipment and requirements not included in the library’s budget.

“We are proud to support our

library, one of the best in the western suburbs,” FOL President Joni Hansen said. “We hope readers in the Downers Grove area will come to our book sale for some incredible titles, at very reasonable rates.”

Woodridge Police Department joined millions of people across the U.S. and several other countries last week for the annual “Great ShakeOut Drill.”

The international drill, held Oct. 15, focused on the “Drop, Cover and Hold On” protective actions people should take when

an earthquake begins: “Drop” down to the floor; take “Cover” under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture; and “Hold On” to that item and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.

Schools, businesses, government agencies, families and others were also invited to register and participate in the international drill, as well as individuals drills.

According to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Illinois is at risk from two major seismic zones, the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone and the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The Wabash Valley Zone is located between southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana.

The NMSZ is located in the Central Mississippi Valley and includes portions of the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois,

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is considering a 1.9 percent increase to the 2015 property tax levy.

Controller James Popernik gave a presentation on the levy at the board of education’s Oct. 13 meeting and proposed an aggregate increase of 1.9 percent.

Popernik also discussed the levy’s 10-year history and the reasons for past increases or decreases.

The board adopted the Truth in Taxation Law Resolution regarding the estimated amounts necessary to be levied for 2015 and approved scheduling a public hearing regarding the 2015 property tax levies for Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Longfellow Center, 1435 Prairie Ave., Downers Grove.

During his business report, Popernik also discussed the district’s first-quarter financial performance. He said education fund revenue are slightly higher this year because of delayed state and federal payments received by the district in July.

Popernik also reported that expenditures are also slightly higher this year, but said the 2015-16 budget accounted for the increase.

Hillcrest playground closer to goal Dream.Build.Play Experience receives $325,000 donation A Hillcrest Elementary School student is close to achieving his dream of building DuPage County’s first all-inclusive playground.

Owen Chaidez and his mother, Peg, are leading a crowdfunding effort called the Dream.Build.Play Experience. The goal of the project is to construct a playground

at Hillcrest that would offer all children, including those with disabilities, a place to play.

Until recently, Owen and his mother were far from raising the $450,000 necessary to make the playground, which would be the first of its kind in DuPage County, a reality.

That changed last month, after

Owen met with two private donors to request larger donations.

During the Oct. 13 District 68 Board of Education meeting, Owen and his mother updated the board on the Dream.Build.

Play Experience, which received an additional $325,000 from the donors.

According to District 58, the project is nearing its fundraising goal and Owen and Peg Chaidez are planning and construction of the playground can begin early next year.

Since 1974, the year network monitoring of seismic activity began, more than 3,000 earthquakes have been recorded in the NMSZ. Fortunately, none of these earthquakes exceeded a magnitude of 5.0, and most occurred without most people noticing.

The largest earthquake in recent years occurred on the

Wabash Valley Seismic Zone. It occurred April 18, 2008, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and registered a magnitude of 5.4.

Illinois has participated in ShakeOut drills for the past five years. In October 2014, almost 578,000 residents took part in the nationwide earthquake drill.

Woodridge man gets 6 years for attempted kidnapping in Bolingbrook 22-year-old guilty of two incidents from January 2013 By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @DownersGrvBugle

A Woodridge man who attacked two girls in Bolingbrook on two separate days in 2013 was sentenced to six years in prison Oct. 14.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office said Kareem Green, 22, was found guilty of

attempted kidnapping, aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and misdemeanor battery in August.

As part of his sentence, which was handed down by a Will County circuit judge this week, Green also must register as a violent offender for 10 years after he is released from prison.

“A dangerous man has been taken off our streets because of two brave girls who refused to

become victims, a courageous Good Samaritan who refused to look the other way and dogged police work by detectives who refused to let their community become the hunting grounds for a predator,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a release.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Green grabbed a 17-year-old girl from behind and attempted to carry her away as she was walking home from Bolingbrook High School on

the afternoon of Jan. 29, 2013.

A passing motorist stopped his vehicle to assist the victim and frightened off the attacker, who fled in a dark Ford Explorer. The witness, who testified at trial, provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle, but could not get a license plate number.

On Jan. 31. 2013, Green followed a 16-year-old girl as she walked into her girlfriend’s Bolingbrook apartment building after school.

Prosecutors said he grabbed her in the hallway and attempted to

cover her mouth, but she struck him with her elbow and began to scream for help. Green once again fled the scene.

Bolingbrook police immediately began combing through vehicle records to identify individuals who owned dark Ford Explorers and who fit the description provided by the two victims and the passing motorist.

Detectives identified Green as a potential suspect, and he was later picked out of a photo lineup by all three witnesses.

“We tried to take a look into one of the burning buildings. I cannot describe what was inside. There are no words for how terrible it was. In the Intensive Care Unit six patients were burning in their beds.” So said Lajos Zoltan Jecs, a nurse at the hospital the U.S. bombed. This image is now spiraling through the Internet and across the global consciousness.

The U.S. bombed a hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, killing 22 people: doctors, staff, patients (including three children). The hospital was not “collateral damage”; it was deliberately targeted, deliberately destroyed, in multiple bombing runs that lasted at least half an hour. Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), which operated the hospital, contacted its sources in the U.S. government immediately, pleading for the attack to stop - to no avail.

The bombing continued until the hospital, with more than 180 occupants, was destroyed. And we’re left with the aftermath of a mass murderer spree, except the killer isn’t dead or hogtied and shoved into a police wagon. The killer gives a press conference.

Oh same old, same old!

The killer offers condolences, promises to investigate itself. “If errors were committed, we will acknowledge them,” said Gen. John Campbell, commander of American forces in Afghanistan.

The killer, as usual, flees from any real responsibility.

But this time, maybe . . . maybe . . . something is different. The organization that ran the demolished hospital, as Glenn Greenwald has pointed out, is a Western-based international humanitarian association with media credibility and powerful support outside the Third World. It’s not like we’ve simply bombed another wedding party or killed a few more women and children in an outlying village. On this occasion, those who have suffered also have a global voice.

had to organize a mass casualty plan in the office, seeing which doctors were alive and available to help. We did an urgent surgery for one of our doctors.

Unfortunately he died there on the office table. We did our best, but it wasn’t enough.”

And the world, or a sizable piece of it, can put itself inside the burning, deliberately bombed hospital. And the U.S. is accused of committing a war crime.

I’ve been pondering those words ever since they entered the conversation: pondering their moral weight, their heart-stopping, accusatory coldness. My initial reaction was, well, of course it’s a war crime. Indeed, the two words, “war” and “crime,” ought to be inextricably linked. It’s impossible to wage war especially the way a superpower wages war, with so many weapons of mass destruction at the ready - without violating conventional moral strictures, without killing civilians in mindnumbing numbers, with virtually every action.

So why is this different? Bombing a hospital, especially with deliberate intent - apparently at the behest of the Afghan government, which, reportedly, hated the hospital for treating the injured regardless what side they’re on - is depraved and utterly reckless.

Not only did the U.S. kill patients and staff members from all over the world, who were working there because of a commitment to give help to those in harm’s way, but it destroyed one of the few medical centers in a city with a population of over 300,000.

All of this clearly makes the act a crime by any moral standard, but in point of fact, we’ve been doing this for so long and causing so much horrific damage - in the long term as well as the short term, considering, for instance, the environmental consequences wrought by the use of depleted uranium missiles and bombs - that one more act of carnage, 22 more murdered civilians, hardly seems more “criminal” than all that happened throughout the Middle East before the Oct. 3 bombing.

Nevertheless, I felt a need, in my heart and in our collective heart, to address the bombing’s strategists and apologists with moral directness, of the sort my friend Kathy Kelly of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, a long-time antiwar activist, recently described: “Before the 2003 Shock and Awe bombing in Iraq,” she wrote, “a group of activists living in Baghdad would regularly go to city sites that were crucial for maintaining health and well-being in Baghdad, such as hospitals, electrical facilities, water purification plants, and schools, and string large vinyl banners between the trees outside these buildings which read: ‘To Bomb This Site Would Be A War Crime.’ We encouraged people in U.S. cities to do the same, trying to build empathy for people trapped in Iraq, anticipating a terrible aerial bombing.”

She encouraged doing this again and, in fact, a public demonstration was held in front of Stroger Hospital, Chicago’s enormous county hospital, protesting the Kunduz bombing. Suddenly I imagined Americans standing in front of every hospital in the country, proclaiming that there’s no difference between bombing a hospital in Afghanistan and bombing one here.

And that’s when I realized the significance of calling the bombing a war crime. Doing so attempts to bring both moral and legal force to bear on what was done and interrupts the postwar-crime press conference. Indeed, the act creates - births - this force: an international conscience.

Because the outrage is global, the time is ripe. To call the bombing of the Kunduz hospital a war crime is, perhaps, the most effective way people have, at this juncture of human history, to address war itself, to stand up to its powerful perpetrators and put a halt to their uncontrolled behavior.

Facing the defending Class AA state champion in a one-hole playoff can be daunting.

Doing so as a freshman in a sectional is nearly impossible.

However, Benet freshman Lauren Beaudreau took down NeuquaValley senior Jessica Yuen in the Neuqua Valley Sectional at Naperbrook Golf Course in Naperville.

The two girls battled the wind to post matching 69s, forcing the playoff, which Beaudreau won on the first hole.

“I played really solid today,” Beaudreau said. “I was very confident. I focused on myself and didn’t worry about what others were doing.”

Beaudreau shot a 3-under par 33 on the front nine and carded a 36 on the back.

“I had four birdies and one bogey on the front,” she said. “I was hitting the ball very close and just made five-six footers. My putting was on all cylinders. I thought I could do this. My teammates were very supportive. It is really exciting.”

On the back side the wind picked up, but Beaudreau battled through it.

“I kept my nerves under control,” she said. “I stayed committed to each shot. It got very windy on the back, so I kept the ball down low. It feels really good. I played really well today and my game showed it.”

Abby Bitto, was in a playoff of her own, fighting for three of the final four spots to make it to state after shooting a 77. She was able to make par and advance.

“It is totally surreal,” she said. “It is a hard sectional, I didn’t know if I would make it. It was very nerve-wracking. I felt pretty good throughout and shot a good score.

It is fun going to state with Lauren.”

Beaudreau then followed that up with a fourth-place showing at state with a two-day total of 146, 2-over par.

Guilford sophomore Madasyn Pettersen won with a 144, while Jessica Lee of Hinsdale Central and Yuen tied for second with a 145.

Both days Beaudreau fired a 73.

Bitto tied for 36th in the state with a 164 total.

•Downers Grove North also had a successful day, advancing to state as a team by one shot over Naperville North with a 321.

The Trojans were led by a pair of individuals who advanced to state individually last year in Rachel Leucuta and Courtney Katz, both of whom shot 78.

“It is really cool,” Leucuta said. “Me and Courtney went as individuals last year and we wanted to go as a team this year. It is really cool for the seniors to be able to experience it. I had some more confidence coming into sectionals this year after making it to state last year.”

Trio of boys golfers qualify for state meet

A trio of local golfers advanced out of the boys Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional last weekend.

At state, Downers Grove South’s Trent Caraher finished tied for 52nd with a two-day total of 165.

His teammate Dean Netzel was tied for 77th in the state with a 170, while Benet’s Nick Schanzer carded a 171 and was tied for 80th.

Leading the way out of the sectional was Schanzer who carded a 71 and was the low round of the sectional.

“I played out of my mind,” Schanzer said. “My driver was unbelievable. I hit a lot of greens and I made solid putts all day.

I never expected to play this good.”

While he said he didn’t expect

that low of a round, Schanzer knew he needed it. He also knew how to approach it.

“I knew I had to put up a low number,” he said. “It is always hard to get to state as an individual in this sectional.

I stuck with my game plan like I did in my practice rounds and that gave me a ton of confidence.”

Caraher led the way with a 74, while Netzel carded a 75, qualifying on the number for the Mustangs “I managed to keep the ball in play off the tee and I was throwing wedges at the pin and I was putting well,” Caraher said. “I took advantage of the par-fives and made birdie on all of them.”

Like Schanzer, Caraher knew he had to put up a good number to advance. A goal he had since missing the cut last year.

Mustangs win 17th straight conference title

Downers South took home its 17th consecutive conference title by scoring 16 points to runner-up Leyden’s 75 at the WSC Gold meet.

Katie Stapleton led the Mustangs to a 1-2-3-4 finish by running a time of 17:56. She was followed by Becky Versaskas (18:30), Michaela Hackbarth (18:38) and Gillian Thomas (18:44). Along with those three girls, Jill Boyle (18:58), Emily Qualizza (19:02) and Olivia Duax (19:32) earned all-conference honors as the Mustangs placed seven girls among the top nine in the race.

•The Downers South boys edged Hinsdale South 31-34 for the top spot in the WSC Gold. The Mustangs held five of the top 10 spots as Jack LaLonde (15:06, 3rd), Stephen Pipilas (15:19, 4th), Joey Eterno (15:35, 6th), Max O’Meara (15:41, 8th) and Alan Zhou (15:56, 10th) scored.

I went down to state as a sophomore and last year I missed it by two and I was disappointed in myself,” Caraher said. “I knew senior year I had to get back down there. I wasn’t playing my best mid high school season, but I got it together the last four weeks. I won conference and the Lockport Invitational.”

For Netzel, advancing to state is just a bonus to an already successful season.

“To even make sectional is an honor, but to go another step is another step in my life,” he said.

“I proved myself. You have to put up some good numbers coming out of here.”

He was happy he wasn’t the lone Mustang making the trip.

“Trent and I are good friends and it helps to have us going together,” Netzel said.

Like Caraher, Netzel used the par-fives to aide his round.

“I managed to birdie all three par-fives, so that helped erase a double bogey,” he said. “I

“This is a different stage for sure and I learned what to do and what not to do out there. It was really, really cool to be here as a freshman. I look forward to continuing this journey and really pushing it.”

Alex Malone shot an 82, while Kevin Chow posted an 84, Gytis Blinstrubas recorded an 86 and Bowen Marks shot an 88.

On a cold Friday night No. 6 Joliet Catholic Academy looked to keep their undefeated streak going as they faced off against Benet Academy on Benedictine University’s field.

Benet (6-2) would hand JCA (7-1) its first loss of the season by a score of 24-21.

While JCA would never take the lead during the game, the game was very back and forth.

The Redwings scored first as Jack Sznajder found Matt Hembrough in the end zone for six.

“We put together our best game of the year tonight and everyone sees what happens in beating a great team.” Sznajder said.

Sznajder would finish the game 26-for-38 for 260 yards passing and three touchdowns.

It wouldn’t be long before the Hilltoppers would find the end zone as Cade Earl would connect with Michael Johnson on a wheel route to score their first points of the evening, tying the game at seven in the second quarter.

Earl went 13-for-30 for 177 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Benet tried to answer back on the following possession, but committed the first turnover of the night instead. Colin Hall would fumble the ball after gaining yards on a screen pass and the Hilltoppers would recover. The

The Hilltopper defense stood strong after the interception and forced the Redwings to kick a field goal to make the score 17-7.

Facing their biggest deficit of the game, JCA’s hopes of scoring on its next drive would come to an end when Johnson fumbled the ball and Benet recovered. Just before the quarter was over Joliet Catholic’s defense again would stand strong, this time blocking a Benet field goal attempt, giving them momentum going into the fourth quarter.

On the first drive of the fourth quarter Earl connected with Bill Rotnicki for JCA’s second touchdown of the night, making the score 17-14. Following the touchdown the Hilltoppers would successfully recover an onside kick but did not capitalize and had to punt the ball away.

Following the punt Benet looked

to close the game, however on the drive Sznajder would throw his first pick of the evening and JCA had another opportunity. After the pick though the Holltoppers would commit another turnover and give the ball back to Benet.

The Redwings would take advantage of the JCA fumble as Sznajder found CharlieWeidenbach in the end zone to make the score 24-14. The Hilltoppers turned the ball over again, however, Benet wouldn’t be able to score.

JCA would answer the call when they got the ball back. Earl found Rotnicki in the end zone for their second connection of the night to bring the score to 24-21.

“First of all Benet’s defense played really well creating four turnovers,” said JCA coach Dan Sharp. “We’re not going to be able to turn the ball over four times against a good football team and expect to win. Our defense did a nice job of getting us the ball, but we didn’t quite take advantage.”

For Benet, it was a huge win in the closing weeks of the regular season.

“It was an inspiring performance, these guys fought hard for four quarters.” Benet coach Pat New said. “Joliet is such a competitive team, they’re never down. For us to come out with a win is very exciting for us.”

Up next for Benet is Marian Catholic, while Joliet Catholic will close out the regular season with Marist next week.

At state the Lions finished with an 804 total. Altpeter shot a 198, Daly had a 199, Zink fired a 204 and Anna Palicka added a 206.

Westmont resident, doctor is honorary Chicago Bulls captain Physician promotes heart care for chemotherapy recipients An Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital physician and breast cancer survivor was recognized as an honorary captain at the Chicago Bulls preseason game Oct. 12.

Westmont resident Dr. Gaile Sabaliauskas, a cardiologist at Advocate Good Samaritan, was among the survivors recognized at the team’s “Pink Out” preseason game against the New Orleans Pelicans. Sabaliauskas is featured in Advocate Health Care’s “Stories of the Girls” marketing campaign. She shared how her fight against breast cancer impacted her as a mother, wife and physician in a video posted on Advocate’s YouTube channel.

“I always felt I was a compassionate physician, but now I find myself understanding the oncology patients more,” Sabaliauskas said. “I’ve definitely

“I had patients who had developed heart complications from the chemotherapy and that required them to stop their chemotherapy for the time being – and that was devastating to them,” Sabaliauskas said. “So, I thought if we had a cardio-oncology program, we could protect them so that they wouldn’t have to put their chemotherapy on hold.”
