his halloween, a new Westmont haunt is asking area residents what they’re most afraid of and then bringing those fears to life.

Whether you’re creeped out by spiders, the dead, or everyone’s favorite, clowns, the terror Within haunted house has taken some of our deepest, darkest phobias and bringing them to life every weekend in october.

“We are said to be the longest consecutiverunning haunted house in the country,” said Jackie West, president of Community Commonwealth, a lombard-based not-forprofit that puts on the annual haunt. story Continues on page 2

Halloween tradition continued from page one Formerly the Lombard Jaycees, the group has held its annual haunted house for more than four decades. The house was started by Lombard Jaycee Dick Brant in 1970 as a way to get kids off the street and doing something constructive during Halloween.

“That’s what we still do to this day, and that’s what makes our haunted house different from all the others,” West said, noting that area children are involved in every step of the process. “First, we come up with a theme, and the kids get to pitch their room ideas. Then, they design [their room] and do everything from start to finish.”

Now in its 45th year, the haunted house has become well known throughout the area. And that reputation, according to West, is one of its biggest draws for new ghosts and goblins.

That’s how Graham Louthan and his brother, Alexander, were introduced to the haunted house.

The 16-year-old haunters are from Chicago but were introduced to the Lombard haunted house six years ago.

“We went through in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and we thought it was really cool,” said Graham. “So, we wanted to get involved and started

in 2012.”

This year, the theme of the Terror Within Haunted House is phobias, and the brothers chose one that is seemingly ubiquitous.

“Pretty much everybody is afraid of the dentist,” said Graham.

“It’s one of the big fears, so I just thought that I could do it really cool and make it one of the scariest rooms we have.”

And that is exactly what he and

his brother did. The two have some prior experience creating “home haunts,” a single-scene haunted house that they hold at their home on Halloween.

For Terror Within, the brothers constructed a three-room dentist office, complete with bloodstained walls and grisly surgical instruments. A walk through the set is enough to cause one to put off scheduling their next dental appointment.

Jason Rogers is another haunter who started four years ago. The 20-year-old Wheaton resident pitched an idea for a room based on somniphobia, or the fear of sleep.

His unique idea came to life in the form of Wes Craven’s “Nightmare on Elm Street,” the 1984 horror classic that introduced nocturnal serial killer Freddy Krueger to the dreams of unsuspecting children.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Rogers said of building his set.

Other phobias on display in the Terror Within Haunted House are coulrophobia, the fear of clowns; arachnophobia, the fear of spiders; and osmophobia, the fear of odors.

“I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the fear of ducks,” joked Rogers, referring to a poster in the lobby that describes anatidaephobia, which is the fear that somewhere in the world there is a duck watching you.

As for West, she said her worst fear, claustrophobia, was conveniently cut from this year’s haunted house.

“But, we do have a hallway that is a bit claustrophobic,” she joked.

Terror Within, 6226 S. Cass Ave., runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 31, with a free lights-on kiddie matinee scheduled for Oct. 25.

Additionally, West said there are two fundraisers planned. Save the BOObies, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will take place Oct. 15, and Westmont Community Night, benefiting the Westmont Lions Club, Rotary Club and the chamber of commerce’s education foundation, will take place Oct. 22. On those nights, $3 of every admission will be donated.

Pace customers who pay with cash may see a 25 cent fare increase in 2016.

The increase is one of the major proposals included in the suburban bus service’s 2016 budget, which Pace said will be unveiled at a number of scheduled public hearings in late October.

Hearings will be held in 13 locations throughout Pace’s sixcounty service area, according to a news release from the agency.

A public hearing on the agency’s DuPage County budget is scheduled for Oct. 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the DuPage County Government Center Auditorium, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. Additionally, four hearings will be held in Chicago, four in suburban Cook

County and one each in Will, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties.

According to Pace, the proposed budget is balanced and includes $7.6 million of new service, including $6.6 million for a full year of service implemented late this year and an additional $1 million of new service set to begin in 2016.

Pace said the 25 cent increase to cash fares would not affect customers who use Ventra and bring the bus service in line with similar fare structures at the Chicago Transit Authority and the Illinois Tollway.

The move would also help encourage more customers to use Ventra and lower the costs associated with collecting and handling cash, Pace added.

Although Pace said its Regional ADA Paratransit Budget is also balanced and maintains current service levels and fares,

the uncertain status of an $8.5 million state grant could lead to a fare increase for paratransit customers.

“We are excited about the expansion of services contained in the budget and what that means for the mobility of our customers, especially as the economy improves and demand increases for work-related travel,” Board Chairman Richard Kwasneski said. “We encourage people to participate in the public hearing process, as it’s an opportunity to learn more about how we’re funded, our operations, and our plans for the future.”

The public hearing schedule is posted at PaceBus.com, along with instructions on submitting comments about the budget via email and post.

The budget document will be available for download at Pacebus. com once it is approved by the Pace Board of Directors at its Oct. 14 meeting.

Lisle-Woodridge Fire District receives grant Funds awarded through Illinois American Water program

By Bugle Staff The Lisle-Woodridge Fire District is among 62 fire departments in Illinois that will receive a share of approximately $49,600 awarded through Illinois American Water’s 2015 Firefighter Grant Program.

Created in 2010, the program is designed to provide financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving customers in Illinois American Water’s

service area. Since its creation, the program has resulted in more than 280 grants that total more than $294,000.

“We are committed to supporting our local fire departments,” said Bruce Hauk, president of Illinois American Water. “This program enables us to further support fire protection in the communities we serve and partner with our local fire fighters.”

Illinois American Water’s Firefighter Grant Program awards grants to provide personal protective gear, communications equipment, firefighting tools, water handling equipment, training materials and classroom programs.

At the beginning of the season, Downers Grove North opened with questions at quarterback, having a pair of capable signal callers that could do the job.

The Trojans started off with Brandon Bancoro at the helm, as he is the more adept running quarterback and North is known historically as a run-first team.

But after Bancoro was injured in week two at Lockport and missed four games, Quinn McAnally stepped in and ran the offense smoothly, adding a passing element to the playbook.

So, what would the Trojans do with Bancoro back in the mix in a crucial head-to-head battle with cross-town rival Downers Grove South?

The answer - play them both.

That is what North coach John Wander did and it paid off in a 21-14 win Friday night.

“We are playing with a twoheaded monster,” said North

coach John Wander. “Quinn throws the ball well and Brandon runs the ball well and its high school, so do it.”

The quarterback tandem played well for North all night.

McAnally was 11-of-15 passing on the game for 99 yards. He tallied six of his completions on one drive that was capped off by a Connor Olson touchdown run.

Bancoro posted a game-high 130 yards rushing, and the team’s first TD, but his night was highlighted by an 86-yard run to the one-yard line following a South fumble inside its own red zone with the Mustangs looking to tie the game. The ball was stripped by North’s Joseph Ward and recovered by Jamil Smith.

McAnally’s entered and snuck the ball in to put North up 21-7 and secure what would be the game-winning score.

Riley Heavey would connect with Charley Hlavin for a 3-yard touchdown late in the game for South to get within 21-14 with 1:10 to go, North recovered the

Several locals advance through golf regionals Downers Grove North advanced through the Glenbard West Regional, tying for second with Wheaton Warrenville South with a 316. Hinsdale Central won with a 303.

The Trojans were paced by freshman Aiden Lafferty, who tied for the top regional score with a 74. Gytis Blinstrubas shot an 80 to place 16th, while Alex Malone and Bowen Marks both carded 81s to tie for 17th. Bryan Eckmann tied for 32nd with an 87, while Kevin Chow tied for 51st with a 96.

Benet carded a total score of 318, missing being a team qualifier by two shots. Benet was paced by a pair of 78s as Alex Bassetto and Jack Neenan tied for ninth. Nick Schanzer and Austin Feldmen and Nick Schanzer carded 78s and tied for 17th. While the four top Redwings advanced to the sectional round, Matt Servino did not. He carded a 92, which tied him for 43rd overall in the tournament.

As a team, Downers Grove South placed sixth with a team score of 331.

Trent Caraher led the way with a 4-over 76 taking fifth place.

The next Mustang to score was Dean Netzel, who tied for 17th with 81. He was followed by Riley Dockendorff (T-26th, 85), Corey Vondra (T-37th, 89), Ben Ficht (41st, 90) and Patrick Regg (T-43rd, 92).

In Class 1A, Westmont was 10th in the Seneca Regional at Nettle Creek. The Sentinels were led by Joe Virzi and Michael Kokoszka tied for 27th with an 89. Luke Gifford and Patrick Eegan tied for 52nd with a 102 and Gage Maciejewski was 56th with a 104

and Wes Jagielo was 64th with a 112.

On the girls side, Downers North advanced to sectional play, placing third at the Hinsdale Central Regional.

The Trojans were paced by Courtney Katz (79), Grace Holler (82), Rachel Leucuta (84), Annie Bedalov (93), Madison Farsnworth (97) and Olivia Weaver (98). Benet and DGS each had two qualifiers.

For the Redwings, Lauren Beaudreau advanced with a 76, while Abby Bitto moved on with an 83.

South qualified Emily Tom and Morgan Meyer, each with am 87.

In class 1A, Lisle won the Queen of Peace Regional with a 356. The Lions were led by Hanna Altpeter (87), Kelsey Liss (88), Bella Daly (90), Savannah Zink (91), Anna Palicka (96) and Katelyn Fonner (104). Westmont had one qualifier in Sarah Bayne who carded an 89.

VOLLEYBALL Lisle defeated Coal City in three games (25-17, 18-25, 25-18). Robin Griffin tallied nine kills and four blocks, Francesca Wagoner had seven kills and 10 digs, Nicolette Provenzano had seven kills, Melissa Erickson had 12 digs and Hope Kiesling had 30 assists and three ace serves.

The following day the Lions beat Walther Christian in three games (25-20, 16-25, 25-16).

Provenzano had seven kills, Griffin had seven kills and six blocks, Ericson had 13 digs, Wagoner had five kills and five digs, Kiesling had 22 assists, eight digs, and five ace serves and Maggie Gausselin had five ace serves and six digs.

The Trojans (3-4) did not try and hide what they were doing with each quarterback in the game, South just could not stop them at times, something coach Mark Molinari said has been an issue all year.

“We can’t seem to get out of our own way at times this year and I wish I had the answers to fix it,” he said. “We have struggled to stop the pass all season. We knew they were going to pass when (McAnally) was in. We tried playing man, we tried playing zone. It has been our Achilles’ heel all season. We played right into their game plan. I don’t question the effort, we have just failed to execute as a football team all year and it came back and bit us tonight.”

Jonathon Caudell-Dotson paced South’s ground attack with 70 rushing yards, while Heavey finished with 91 yards passing. He posted the game’s first score on a 10-yard run mid

way through the first quarter.

The loss pushes South to 2-5 on the season and with two more games left, eliminates them from playoff contention.

It is only the second time since the 1997 season that South will miss the playoffs.

“We have never been in this situation,” said Molinari, who qualified both years since he has taken over. “We talk about character all the time and your character will be tested. Football, in a lot of ways is like life, but it is nowhere close to life. So if they can’t get through these next two weeks and finish like a man and do it the right way then there will be issues later on.”

The win moved North into a situation where a pair of wins to end the season will qualify them for the playoffs.

“Our board all week said three in a row,” Wander said. “We knew this would be a tough one. York will be tough and Proviso West will be tough. If we can get five wins, we will be in with playoff points.”

Sixth annual Lester Fun Run a fitness success Race promotes health, raises funds for Lester PTA programs

More than 380 runners helped raise more than $15,000 in the sixth annual Running of the Leopards 5K Fun Run and 1-Mile Kids Dash at Lester Elementary School.

Lester School students raced with their families and friends at the Sept. 27 event, which is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise funds for Lester PTA programs and activities.

State Rep. Ron Sandack presided over the race’s opening ceremonies and Downers Grove Mayor Martin

Tully participated in the 5K run on a beautiful course through the neighborhood surrounding Lester School. Also completing the 5K race was the “Lester Fit Girls Club”, a group of 40 female Lester students in fourth and fifth grades who trained together for weeks leading up to the event.

“The Lester Running of the Leopards Fun Run was a truly special gathering for our school families and community,” said Lester Principal Carin Novak.

“There’s no better event than celebrating fitness in a fun way on a beautiful fall day. These are the kinds of special memories our kids will keep with them for years to come.”

Afterward, students, families and school staff celebrated the Fun Run with an awards ceremony, door prizes, sponsor samples,

Giamarino Marie V. Giamarino, 95, of Seymour, passed away Oct. 6 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Seymour, Wisconsin. She was born Nov. 1, 1919, daughter of the late Edward and Marie (Semelka) Srotyr.

Born and raised in Cicero, Illinois, where as a child she held a paper route that, as the story goes, included the Capone brothers.

Growing up during the Great Depression, Marie acquired the values of hard work, determination and the value of a dollar.

On April 21, 1945, she was united in marriage to David A. Giamarino Jr. They were married for 58 years until David’s death in 2003. Marie met David while they both worked at a screw factory in Chicago. A favorite date was fishing on the banks of the Fox River in St.

Charles, Illinois. Marie and David moved to Lisle to start a family.

They were active in the Foster Care Program, where they cared for 22 foster children before adopting two children of their own; Edward and David III. Besides her love of children, Marie enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, crafts and collecting angels of all types. As the kids grew, Marie held several jobs outside the house. She retired from Vaughn Seed Company in 1982, where she was able to bring her love of gardening into her occupation.

Marie and David retired to a lake home on Big Devils Lake in Sarona, Wisconsin. Marie enjoyed everything Mother Nature offered, especially when her children and grandchildren would visit. Poor health finally forced Marie to move from her lake home in 2012 to Meadow Wood Assisted Living in Seymour to be close to family and finally to Good Shepherd Home.

Marie is survived by her two sons, Edward and his wife Dawn, along with Marie’s two grandchildren Benjamin and Matthew, and David and his wife, Vickie; and her foster daughter, Dorothy (Dave) Patrick.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Edward and William, and one sister, Verna.

Businesses warned of statewide corporate scam Illinois businesses are the target of a new scam that attempts to confuse the business owner about state law, according to a news release from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

A firm called Illinois Council for Corporations is contacting Illinois businesses in an attempt to collect a $125 fee to fill out a corporation’s “Annual Minutes Records Form.”

The Illinois Business Corporation Act does not require corporations to file a “Minutes Records Form” or pay such a fee with the state or any private entity.

“This bogus firm is sending out a form that looks similar to the secretary of state’s annual report form,” White said. “We are concerned that companies are filing the form and paying the $125 fee because they believe they are filing their annual report with us, as required by law.”

The secretary of state said there is no fee due to the state for annual minutes. The annual report fee is normally the only fee a corporation would pay to the Secretary of State Business Services Department. Illinois corporations should be on alert for this and other similar attempts to confuse Illinois business owners about state law.

White said corporations should not reply to the solicitation, adding that business owners who believe they’ve been targeted by this scam file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

“Posing as government officials is a tactic frequently used by scammers, so it’s important that business owners be vigilant,” Madigan said. “If business owners are asked to submit fees and forms they are unfamiliar with, I encourage them to first contact my office.”
