T

he village of Westmont announced last month that it will be the first illinois municipality to construct a pervious concrete street and hopes the project will inspire other towns to follow its lead. this “green” stormwater management strategy is part of the South Cumnor road reconstruction project and is being installed in the stretch of road between 59th and 61st streets. Pervious concrete allows rainwater that hits its surface to be filtered through the material, rather than be diverted into storm sewers. see ‘LEADING’ on paGe 4

Westmont boy honored as Cubs bat kid Cubs Hall of Famer, current players welcomed Jacob Day Westmont resident Jacob Day, 8, had a big day Sept. 28 with his favorite big league team.

The Fairmount Elementary second grader hung out with Hall of Famer Billy Williams and current Chicago Cubs players and served as the honorary bat kid during the team’s final home game of the 2015 regular season.

Jacob’s younger brother, Carter, joined him for the opportunity, which came about due to the

team’s partnership with Advocate Health Care.

Jacob was born five weeks prematurely at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, and doctors soon discovered that he had a congenital heart defect that would require open-heart surgery.

At 4 months old, Jacob had his first open-heart surgery.

Just before his fifth birthday, Jacob underwent his second successful open-heart surgery, and once again, his recovery was remarkable.

He now attends Fairmount Elementary in Downers Grove, where he is active and enjoys playing soccer, baseball and basketball through the Downers Grove Park District.

A huge Cubs fan, Jacob’s favorite player is Anthony Rizzo.

Throughout the Cubs’ season, Advocate Health Care provides young patients with the opportunity to be honorary bat kids for a game.

Duo wins Chilympics chili cook off for second year Winners advance to International Chili Society’s World Championships

For the second straight year, Scott Carbon and Dave Bormann claimed first place and the $500 prize in the Downers Grove Park District Chilympics.

After being named winners of the competition, held Sept 26 at Fishel Park, the duo will now advance to the International Chili Society’s World Championships in Reno, Nevada.

Jannie Fabianski won the prize for best salsa and People’s Choice salsa, while Don Peters and Downers Grove Village Council member Bob Barnett won the People’s Choice award for chili.

the third annual Chilympics chili cook off. The homestyle event allowed competitors to use any ingredients in their chili or salsa recipes. A panel of judges select the overall winner for the chili contest, which is sanctioned by the ICS, and the salsa contest.

“The addition of a salsa contest to this year’s event will add some extra spice to the contest,” Kari Gregori, special events supervisor for the park district, said in a release prior

to the event.

Festival visitors also voted for their favorite recipes, as part of the chili and salsa People’s Choice contests. The event was sponsored by the Downers Grove Park District, Fresh Thyme Market., Wenzel Select Properties, Perillo of Downers Grove, Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation, Rotary Club of Downers Grove, Bank Financial and the Grove Foundation for Recreation.

Downers Grove park board appoints new commissioner Tom Salaba was sworn in on the Downers Grove Park District Board of Commissioners on Sept. 17. He will serve the remaining two years of Damienne Souter’s term, who resigned from the board.

said Salaba is a small business owner, who has been a resident of Downers Grove for nine years.

He has been involved with several park district programs, including basketball, baseball and the fitness center.

2015 Westmont state of the village set for Oct. 21 The village of Westmont announced that its annual state of the village presentation will be held Oct. 21 at the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort & Conference Center, 3500 Midwest Road, Oak Brook.

According to the village, Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter and village staff will discuss village finances, economic development, programs and services, and community events, among other topics. The presentation is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., with registration set for 7:30 a.m.

Executive Director Larry Forssberg said this year’s address will be expanded in scope.

“We’re trying something different this year,” he said, adding that this year’s presentation will be held in the morning and feature a continental breakfast. “As always, we’re looking forward to an informative presentation by the village.”

“Other towns will be watching this project in Westmont with a lot of interest,” said Brian Lutey, vice president of sustainability and compliance with Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete. “This is the first project of this type in a fivestate area.”

Pervious concrete works by allowing rainwater to filter through to a layer of stone below the roadway, where it will be stored for 3 to 5 days before being

released. This process is designed to maximize the amount of water absorbed by the ground, which would otherwise be directed into storm sewers and water treatment plants.

According to the village, pervious concrete has additional environmental benefits. Typical asphalt pavement releases pollutants that ultimately enter the water, but pervious concrete does not have contain these pollutants.

The village noted that pervious concrete is designed to capture pollutants, such as fertilizers

Furthermore, the concrete’s porous nature means the road will not require salt to prevent ice buildup during the winter, and prevent puddles or pooling of water on the surface during rainstorms.

“With a new revenue source dedicated to stormwater management, Westmont will be aggressively addressing concerns

that are facing Westmont and municipalities throughout the greater Chicagoland area,” Village Manager Stephen May said in reference to a referendum passed last year that created a stormwater-infrastructure sales tax.

Village officials said pervious concrete requires unique maintenance to prolong its durability, including the use of rubber blades by snow plows and vacuuming in dry months to ensure the material remains porous.

We fetishize firearms in this country; that must come to an end

Last Thursday, the latest in a series of horrific mass shootings occurred at an Oregon community college.

The perpetrator, whose name I will not by jonathan mention, walked into samples Umpqua Community managing editor College and killed at least nine people and seriously injured several others.

As for the motives behind this senseless act of violence, I will not speculate. But what I will say is that I, like many of you, am disgusted with what has becoming a disturbing trend in our country.

I’m disgusted with the frequency of these tragedies. A Mother Jones’ investigation into U.S. mass shootings found that 308 people have been killed and 220 injured between 2005 and July 16, 2015, in mass murders involving a firearm. The families of these victims and countless others have suffered irreparable harm.

I’m disgusted with the passive

coverage of these incidents by a mostly exploitative media, highlighting the carnage and ignoring the cause. This abdication of responsibility by “news” outlets that recognize the potential of these stories to draw an audience, but fail to accept their obligation to question and challenge the culture in which they occur, is inexcusable.

I’m disgusted with how desensitized our country has become to mass killings, setting a timetable of interest and outrage, and seeing little more than “hashtag” activism as a response.

I’m disgusted with feelings of discomfort that sometimes arise during large social gatherings and with the specter of tragedy that has no chance to dissipate in the short lapses of time between these awful incidents.

I’m disgusted with the lack of empathy and action from our leaders and representatives in response to this disturbing trend, offering instead staged displays of sympathy to the families of victims but ignoring their pleas for changes to this country’s gun laws.

I’m disgusted with the idealism displayed by both sides of the debate over how guns fit into our present culture – an idealism that clouds any meaningful discussion of the issue and prevents any response to these tragedies.

I’m disgusted with the glorification of firearms and gun culture in this country.

This way of thinking has propelled the U.S. to No. 1 in every meaningful statistic related to gun ownership and gun violence.

The Council on Foreign Relations found that the U.S. ranks No. 1 in firearms per capita and contains 35-50 percent of the world’s civilian-owned firearms, despite having less than 5 percent of the world’s population. Among developed nations, the U.S. also has the highest rate of homicides by firearms.

Additionally, research by Politifact found that the number of people killed by gunfire in the U.S. between 1968 and 2011 is greater than the total number of U.S. deaths in every war it has fought.

From the Revolutionary War to the Iraq war, 1.2 million Americans were killed in those conflicts. In the 43-year period studied by Politifact, there were 1.4 million firearm deaths.

It has been made unbearably clear by gun-rights advocates such as NRA President Wayne LaPierre that the “right” to bear arms is more important than the unalienable right of U.S. citizens to live without the threat of gun violence.

We take these truths to be self evident, that all people have the right to safety and wellbeing; that a 227-year-old passage should serve more as roadmap and less as dogma; and that we as a united people must find the courage and understanding to prevent the next mass murder.

If the fetishizaiton of firearms is a fundamental piece of our identity as Americans, then perhaps it’s time we reinvent ourselves.

Everyday inclusion changes the game In the month of October, we celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time for us to learn to see Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities as a gift. A time to focus on an individual’s abilities.

A time where we educate our communities about ways to accept and include those of us with special needs.

Take for example, By Daniel my new friends Smrokowski Erin Compton, 10, Bugle Columnist of Clarendon Hills; Becky Cavanagh, 10, of Clarendon Hills; and Callie Devine, 9, of Westmont. Erin and Becky are children, the same as their friend Callie or any other typically

developing child. The quality that makes Erin and Becky different than Callie is that the two girls were born with Down syndrome.

A good group of friends is one that is built on inclusion and where acceptance is at the core of the friendship. When the three girls are together, they show the world how to accept each other for their own individual abilities.

“When they are together, none of them have special needs,” said Diane Compton, mother of Erin. “[That] is pretty spectacular.”

The time I spend with friends is similar to this group of girls. When my friends and I are together, it’s as if we don’t have special needs.Whether I’m with my friend Georgia Hunter, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome, or my friends Breanna

Bogucki or Josh LeClaire, both diagnosed with autism, we just accept and include each other no matter the special needs.

Erin and Becky first met when Diane started a reading group for children with special needs. Callie and Erin first met when Callie’s grandfather, Jerry Galvin, took Callie for a walk and stopped to play with Erin who was playing in her yard.

Soon after they learned about Signing Times, a video series that shows children with special needs how to communicate using American Sign Language. Sign language helps to combat the frustration that one might have in communicating needs and wants.

Sign language became the ice breaker for Erin’s and Callie’s friendship. From the beginning of their amazing friendship, Callie recognized and valued Erin’s abilities. “[Callie] has been amazing in

Despite losing seven seniors from last year’s squad, Downers South entered this season with several players with varsity experience and had to replace just two starters.

That helped them get off to a strong start to the season, winning six of their first eight matches against tough competition.

Leading the way this year are hitters Rachel Schneider, a 6-foot, 2-inch senior, and Kiera James, a junior. Fellow junior and thirdyear varsity player Renee Kryk is the setter.

The experience of the setter with the hitters was vital to the fast start for the Mustangs.

“In the beginning of the season we had some trouble connecting, but that always happens,” Schneider said. “But we’ve gotten used to the setter and the setter is connecting with us. Renee has really connected with our middles and I think this is the best we’ve set the middles.”

“We had a lot of returning hitters, so that helped a lot,” Kryk said. “I knew where they wanted it and I just had to get the rhythm down.”

Now in her third year, Kryk has taken on more of a leadership role on the team, despite being just a junior. She also transitioned to being the lone setter.

“I know my first year I was shy on the team and didn’t talk a lot,” Kryk

said. “But now, with me running a 5-1 this year, it is my responsibility they are all knowing what I am hitting. I like it a lot.”

The Mustangs already beat Hinsdale South in conference play and are looking to finish the season defending their WSC Gold title. A regional championship is also on their radar.

“Our goals are to win conference and win regionals this year,” James said.

“I know in past years we had difficulty keeping a steady pace throughout the season, so this year we hope to stay consistent all year and work together as a team,” Schneider said. “We want to have fun on the court.”

“I think communication is the key and doing that will lead us to success,” Schneider said. “We have to stay determined and committed.

If we do, we can win conference.

We want to pull through and win regionals, too. I definitely think we are a good enough team.”

Communication and hard work appear to be the buzz words for Downers South in its quest to accomplish its goals.

“We want to come together as a team and always communicate and talk when we are on the court,” James said. “We want to work 100 percent all the time.”

“We lost a lot of seniors last year, but we are coming together as a team really well,” James said.

“We did a lot of bonding in the preseason. We used the early season tournaments to get used to each other.”

Westmont cross country girls go 3-1 in quad

In girls cross country action Westmont defeated Lisle, Plano and Walther Christian but came up short against Seneca. Halle Nash led the Sentinel attack with a second-place finish in 20:13. Lisa Niemiec and Peyton Nash finished sixth and seventh in 21:02. Lily Arndt was not far behind finishing in 8th at 21:49 and freshman Frankie Fabry

finished 10th in 21:55.

“We had our first five in the top ten but then so did Seneca,” Westmont coach Steve Wolf said.

“This is the best we’ve run against them going back to last year so the girls were very happy with the results.”

•In boys action Westmont defeated conference opponents Lisle, Plano and Seneca but fell to Walther Christian. Paul Gordon and Jasper Requiron led the Sentinels finishing fourth and fifth at 17:51 and 17:55, respectively. Sam Asa was not far behind finishing seventh in 18:11.

“We had a lot of PRs today and some very near PR’s so this was a good race for us and the guys are starting to gain some confidence along with some valuable racing experience,” Wolf said.

•The Downers South girls placed second out of 34 teams at the Peoria Central Invite. Katie Stapleton led the team with her fourth place finish and PR time of 17:43. That time is the third fastest 3-mile time in DGS history.

Becky Versaskas and Michaela Hackbarth also ran great races, finishing in 14th and 15th places

with identical times of 18:14. The remainder of the squad also ran season best times at Detweiller Park, with Jill Boyle running 18:25, Gillian Thomas running 18:40, Emily Qualizza running 18:48,and Natalie Olsen running 19:11.

Downers South has kept its impressive streak of WSC Gold meet wins this year.

The Mustangs have now won 100 straight conference dual meets and 16 conference titles in a row and are the team to beat again this year in the WSC Gold.

They return two of the top four girls from their 21st place team last year in state in Kate Stapleton and Jill Boyle. Senior Michaela Hackbarth, the 800-meter state champion this past spring in track, also returns.

Senior Emily Gualizza and freshmen Becky Versaskas and Olivia Duax also look to contribute.

“We want to continue to improve throughout the season, win conference and give ourselves an opportunity to qualify for state,” Downers South coach Doug Plunkett said. “We need to stay healthy and push each other to faster times.”

The Mustangs have been focused

on achieving their goals so far this year.

“This is a very hard working, committed team,” Plunkett said.

“If we can transfer that effort into results, we will accomplish all of our goals.”

•After finishing 22nd in the state last year, one spot behind its district rival, Downers North has the looks of an even stronger team this year.

That is because the Trojans return their top six finishers from last year in Emma Moravec (Jr.), Grace Maletich (Sr.), Kaitlyn Bonfield (Sr.), Angela Budach (Sr.), Zoe Covey (Jr.), and Ashley Johnson (Sr.).

They are joined by a solid cast of newcomers in junior Gina Kowalewicz, sophomores Katie Cantlin and Grace Puc and freshmen Victoria Finklea (Fr.), and Abby Koors.

“We are hoping for a return to Peoria and a stronger finish,” Downers North coach Tim McDonald said. “We need hard work, dedication and a tough racing mentality.

“We need to take the next step as a team this year,” Brooks said. “We were a young team last year (none of our top seven were seniors), but now we are a very upperclassmenheavy lineup that has a lot of varsity race experience. That experience needs to show itself on race day with consistency for us to end the season in Peoria where we want to be.”

After finishing behind Seneca in the conference race last year and Chicago Christian at both regionals and sectionals, Westmont hopes to top both teams this year, as well as finishing in the top 10 in the state.

Their performance last year at state has coach Steve Wolf excited about the season.

“We ran very well as a pack last year at state and we will need to do that again this year, but we need to move that pack up,” he said. “We

need to average about a minute faster than last year.

“Our talent, experience, team chemistry, dedication and desire should bring a lot of success for this team.”

BOYS Westmont has just three key returners in Sam Asa, Jasper Requiron and Ryan Pleva, while Paul Gordon and Robby Burns are newcomers looking to make a splash.

“We want to finish high in conference, regional and sectional,” Wolf said. “We want to return to state, if not as a team then with individuals.”

Westmont won a sectional title and finished 17th in the state last year, but will have its work cut out for it this year with the top four runners from last year gone.

“With such a young team we should be in a rebuilding year, but I think with a lot of hard work we can achieve some nice goals this year,” Wolf said.

•Downers South senior Jack LaLonde returns to lead the Mustangs after qualifying for state last year. He is joined by fellow returners Max O’Meara, Joey Eterno, Alan Zhou, Austin Rutkowski, Zach

Scheffel and sophomore Stephen Pipilas.

Freshman Eddie Siuda looks to make an impact this year as well.

“First and foremost, we aspire to work to our potential every single day,” Downers South coach Brian Caldwell said. “We have a hard-working and tough group of guys that are holding each other accountable and running their best consistently, not just for personal goals, but for the betterment of the team as a whole. We hope to improve each week and progress to be in a position to compete for a conference title. Once the state series gets going, our goal is to run at our highest level and hopefully be racing in November at the state meet.”

Health and energy will be vital for the Mustangs to meet their goals.

“A key for us at this point is getting and staying healthy,” Caldwell said.

“We have a few guys that will be critical to our success that aren’t 100 percent right now, but they are going above and beyond in cross training to not only maintain, but improve their overall fitness. Right now, we have a fantastic energy about our team and as long as that continues, this should be a special season for us.”

When Erin, or others with special needs, need downtime, it does not mean they are being rude. This downtime simply gives Erin a little time to regroup.

The friendship between Erin, Becky and Callie is a shining example of what everyday inclusion looks like. It is kids being kids, enjoying their time together, laughing at each other’s silly jokes and singing their favorite songs.

“They’re really fun,” said Callie.

“Sometimes they come up with ideas that other people don’t have.”

This past Sept. 25, the three girls came into the Special Chronicles studio for the taping of a new podcast episode. During an on air transition from a break to the second segment of the program, Erin, Becky and Callie were playing with my family’s small dog. When the time came for them to come back on air, Erin needed some time to regroup. Callie and Becky recognized this and after a few short minutes, Erin was ready to go back on air.

The Special Olympics movement

celebrated the sixth annual Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day, or “EKS Day,” on Sept. 26. On this day, we celebrated the life, legacy and vision of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of Special Olympics. This year’s theme was #LetsChangeTheGame, a time when we showed our communities and the world that those of us with special needs should be respected and included.

This past July, Maria Shriver and Special Olympics released a new challenge called “PLAY #LetsChangeTheGame.” This simple acronym encourages every person in our community to Play, Learn, Accept and say “Yes” to including those of us with intellectual disabilities and to talking to your children about inclusion. It is a tribute to Eunice Kennedy Shriver and in celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month that Erin, Becky and Callie shared their story. The friendship of the three girls demonstrates to their communities every day a snapshot of true friendship. They also show the pure joy that that those of us with special needs can bring to our communities.

“I like them because they are my best friends,” said Erin.

Erin and Becky both have participated in Special Olympics rhythmic gymnastics, while Callie comes to cheer them on. This past

June, they both participated in their first ever Illinois Summer Games.

It was on the Friday evening of the state Summer Games that I met Erin and Becky for the first time and was able to share their first Opening Ceremonies experience with them.

However, I had first met Erin’s mom, Diane, 11 years ago when she was providing vocational training at my high school. It was during this time that Diane learned Erin would be born with special needs.

“You were such an inspiration to me 10 years ago when Erin was born,” Diane told me. “Even as a high school student, you taught me to never, ever limit possibilities.”

A month after competing at our state’s summer games, Erin broadened her possibilities even more, as she and her family headed to Los Angeles to compete in the national Miss Amazing pageant.

Through acceptance and inclusion, we can show the world how every person with special needs brings value to humanity. Join me and let’s change the game.

Westmont plans scarecrow decorating contest The Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau and the Westmont Historical Society announced they will cohost the Westmont Scarecrow Decorating & Display Contest, beginning Oct. 12 and continuing through Nov. 1.

Local businesses, organizations, residents and families are invited to participate

and help decorate the downtown for the fall season.

Pumpkin smashing competition to promote composting The Farm, a Westmont business located at 34 E. 63rd Street, just east of Cass Avenue on the north side of the street, will be accepting unwanted/used pumpkins starting on Monday, Nov. 2 through Friday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 7 from 9am to 3pm.

All pumpkins must be cleaned free of inorganic materials, such as candles, decorations, etc., prior to being disposed in the composting collection container.

The Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza will be part of the Trick Or Treat Trail event in downtown Westmont on Saturday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The competition will be held in the public parking lot on the northeast corner of Cass and Burlington.
