Barkapalooza fest to benefit four-legged friends 22nd annual humane society fundraiser set for Sept. 27 in Lisle Community Park For 22 years, the West Suburban Humane Society has celebrated all things dog related at the annual Barkapalooza, a family-friendly fest

for canines and their owners.

This year’s Barkapalooza is set for Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lisle Community Park, 1825 Short St. The dog-friendly event allows pet owners, prospective pet adopters and all-around pet lovers to raise money for homeless pets through a dog walkathon.

Participants are encouraged to collect pledges for the walk, which is the West Suburban Humane Society’s main annual fundraiser.

All proceeds from the walkathon support the humane society.

Barkapalooza will feature food, fun and music, as well as a free goody bag for individuals participating in the walk. Parking is free. The adult registration fee is $20. Children 12 and under may walk for free.

The humane society said walkers with $100 or more in collected pledges will have their registration fee waived and walk for free.

Participants may set up fundraising websites by logging on to www. firstgiving.com/wshs. Fundraising is not necessary in order to attend Barkapalooza.

West Suburban Humane Society, located at 1901 W. Ogden Ave., Downers Grove, was founded in 1972 as a lost and found referral service. According to its website, the volunteer-based society is dedicated to operating an animal shelter for the purpose of finding safe, permanent, compatible homes through the adoption of domestic dogs and cats in DuPage, Will, Cook, Kane, Kendall, Lake and McHenry counties.

The District 58 Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Christopher Heppner to complete the unexpired term of former board member James Paul, who moved away from the area in August 2015.

Board President John Cooper swore in Heppner Sept. 15 at

the beginning of the board of education’s regular meeting.

District 58 said Heppner, who has served on the board’s financial advisory committee since 2013, was selected from a pool of six applicants interviewed by board members.

The father of five has lived in District 58 for 15 years.

Three of his children completed K-8 in District 58 and two are still enrolled in district schools.

Commissioner Hose announces bid for 81st District By jonathan samples bugle staff

Greg Hose is relatively new to the world of politics, but that is not stopping the Downers Grove Democrat from setting his sights on statewide office.

Hose, a first-term commissioner on the Downers Grove Village Council, recently announced his candidacy for state representative in the 81st District -- a seat currently held by Republican Ron Sandack.

Citing ongoing partisan gridlock in the state legislature, Hose said he hopes to serve as an independent voice in Springfield.

“I think it’s important that we are able to work with folks on all sides of an issue and remain issue focused, rather than personality focused,” he said in a recent interview. “And it’s unfortunate that Rep. Sandack has been engaging in some of the more heated rhetoric in the legislature.”

A graduate of George Washington University Law School, Hose works as a labor attorney at the Chicago firm Gregorio & Marco, Ltd. Before running for a seat on the Downers Grove Village Council in 2013, he servedonthevillage’senvironmental concerns commission and plan commission.

Hose said these positions brought him into contact with people from all walks of life and taught him the importance of compromise.

“I’ve got a record of working with everybody on the council... to get better service delivery and the most efficient use of our tax dollars,” he added.

Ron Sandack (R) order, while maintaining critical state programs. Property tax relief for middle-class families is another of Hose’s primary goals, saying he does support a property tax freeze if done correctly.

“We’ve seen proposals in the legislature that would allow for an increase in order to fund pensions, and I think that makes sense,” he said.

Additionally, Hose thinks it is the state’s responsibility to provide critical services such as Meals on Wheels, aid to children with disabilities and health care for the elderly. He added that a sustainable budget must take these services into account.

“We have to determine what are the critical services that the state has to provide, and we have to take a look at our revenues and figure out what are the right revenue streams to put on the right programs,” Hose said. “It’s going to take a lot of belt tightening throughout the state, and we need to do that belt tightening before we determine what our revenue options have to be.”

In a press release announcing his candidacy, Hose criticized recent budget votes made by his opponent.

“Just a few weeks ago, state Rep. Ron Sandack refused to support funding for breast cancer screenings for women and assistance for children with disabilities, even though facilities and advocates that assist them are shutting down due to the state’s budget impasse,” the release stated.

Sandack, who also served on the Downers Grove Village Council, is currently serving his second term as the representative of the 81st District, which covers portions of Downers Grove, Bolingbrook, Darien, Lisle, Westmont, Woodridge and Naperville.

Prior to being elected to the Illinois House in 2013, Sandack served as state senator in the 21st District and mayor of Downers Grove from 2007 to 2011.

The candidate filing period for races appearing on the November 2016 ballot is Nov. 23-30. Hose said he is currently circulating petitions, as well as raising funds and support,

for what he admits will be a tough race.

“I’m trying to raise what I can to mount a strong campaign,” Hose said. “It’s going to be more grassroots oriented, to be sure, and it takes a lot of time to knock on

all those doors and talk to all the people you can.”

Hose’s seat on the Downers Grove village council is up in April 2017. If elected state representative, he said he would serve the remainder of his term on the council.

The police veteran said working in a new environment is a challenge that he finds appealing.

“Even though I am saddened to be leaving so many good friends here, I am excited about the challenge and opportunity to lead a young, growing department into the future,” Porter said in a news release.

Village Manager David Fieldman said Porter’s selfless and outstanding performance helped elevate his colleagues.

“Bob’s professional, straightforward approach to the daily challenges of law enforcement will be greatly missed,” Fieldman said.

Porter began his law enforcement career at the age of 22. After rising through the ranks, he was appointed Downers Grove’s police chief in August 2001.

Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully said the excellent performance of the police department under Porter’s watch was not an accident.

“It is the direct and hard-earned result of the consistently highquality leadership provided by Chief Porter and his command staff,” Tully added. “Although his ‘can-do,’ inspirational professionalism surely will be missed, it is not at all surprising that someone with his extraordinary energy, experience and talents would want to continue sharing his expertise.”

During his 15 years as chief, the Downers Grove Police Department received numerous accolades, including Accreditation with Excellence from The Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies in March and the Department of Defense Pro Patria Award for Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve. The department was also recognized with the 2014 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge as the top agency in the state for municipal agencies with 66 to 100 sworn officers for their overall approach to traffic safety.

“It has always been important to me as chief to leave the department in a positive way,” Porter said. “We have incredibly gifted people in this organization and I look forward to seeing the department continue to do good things for the community.”

The village said Deputy Chief Bill Budds would begin serving as acting chief of police Oct. 9.

After massive data breaches at Ashley Madison, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, cybersecurity has become a top priority for consumers, businesses and even federal agencies. So WordPress, a platform used by nearly a quarter of all the Internet’s websites, has installed advanced new privacy features.

Observers are eager to see if these enhancements make a difference and prevent future breaches.

But despite the update, some people are still skeptical of using WordPress, chiefly because of some baseless myths about the platform. Here are the five most prevalent – and why they’re wrong.

WordPress can serve as the backbone for powerful, dynamic websites far more advanced than a cookie-cutter blog.

Myth No. 2: WordPress isn’t secure.

With over 60 million websites, this system is certainly targeted by hackers.

The vast majority get blocked. WordPress comes with robust security plugins, which are particularly useful for sites hosting ecommerce or other sensitive client information. And those plugins, along with other security measures, are only getting stronger.

The update, for example, includes enhanced password security features.

Password reset links will now only stay live for a limited time and passwords themselves will never end up in inboxes – a feeding ground for hackers. WordPress will even advise individual users on the safest possible password.

Regular, common sense precautions – like avoiding “password” as your password – will protect average users from any shenanigans.

Myth No. 3: WordPress isn’t suitable for big businesses.

Many large companies with hightraffic sites use WordPress, including Forbes, CNN, TIME magazine, The New York Post, and General Electric. Most of the speed and security issues that might affect a well-trodden site can be solved by hosting the site on a private server.

Even the experts trust WordPress.

TechCrunch, a major technology news site with millions of visitors each month, runs on the platform. And The Seattle Times now entrusts its entire online presence to WordPress.

Westmont won a regional title last year and advanced all the way to the sectional final before bowing out in three sets.

This year, the Sentinels are looking for more success after their 24-win season last year.

However, there are many new faces after the loss of several contributors from last year’s team.

Leading the way are returning seniors Madeline Lubeck, a setter, and Halley Pardy, and outside hitter. Both were all-conference selections.

Senior middle/outside Amanda Prete also is back.

They have an influx of newcomers, led by seniors Hannah O’Malley (OH) and Maddy Debs, a defensive specialist. Juniors Sarah Schlacks (S/DS), Morgan Arens (M/Opposite) and Rachel Chorney (Opposite/M) will round out the lineup.

“Working towards another 20-plus win season will take some work and effort for sure,” Westmont coach Jennifer GilwaBell said. “But everyone has been working extremely hard this summer and preseason, so we are hoping things come together by the time conference play begins.

We are always pushing to be in the top three in conference.”

To have another strong season, hard work will be needed.

“Lots of repetition in all skill

areas will be necessary if we want to improve and accumulate some wins,” Gilwa-Bell said.

“Being focused, determined and disciplined are essential for our growth. Discipline, determination and control will be the key to our success this season.”

lisle Lisle is looking for improvement this year on the volleyball court after placing 10th last year in conference.

Leading the way for the Lions are returners Roby Griffin, a senior middle, senior Melissa Ericson, a senior defensive specialist, junior outside Nicolette Provenzano and junior setter Hope Kiesling.

Sophomore outside and middle Francesca Wagoner is joining the lineup this year.

“We need to utilize the outside attack, get consistent service and serve receiver and strong defense on the net,” Lisle coach Kristen Oros said.

Oros, the first-year coach for Lisle, feels Seneca is the team to beat in the Interstate-8.

“Seneca has historically been a tough team with a lot of talent, size and conscious decisionmaking at the net,” Oros said.

Overall, Oros is excited to see how the season plays out.

“As the new varsity head coach, I am looking forward to working the Lisle varsity team and program,” she said. “I see talent and potential in my athletes, and

Mustangs pick up pair of WSC Gold Division wins The Downers South boys golf team beat Morton 160-212 in a conference match at Fresh Meadows Golf Course. For the DGS, top scorers were Trent Caraher with a 39, Ben Ficht and Trevor Troha each shot 40 and Patrick Reeg carded a 41.

The Mustangs defeated Leyden at White Pines Golf Course 158– 181 to remain undefeated in the WSC Gold. Caraher was the medalist with a 35 and Ficht, Corey Vondra and Dean Netzel all shot 41.

SOCCER Benet tied Bolingbrook 1-1.

Nick Trakszelis scored the lone Redwing goal in the first half, with the assist from Daniel Morefield. Konrad Bayer made three saves in goal.

The Redwings (5-3-1) beat Carmel 3-2. Morefield scored twice, while Jack Knapke had the game winner. Nick Trakszelis and Franklin Rutkowski had assists.

Jasper Requiron led the Sentinels with a second-place finish in 17:47. Also scoring for Westmont were Paul Gordon (7th, 18:18), Sam Asa (17th, 19:43), Tom Dea (24th, 21:12) and Ryan Pleva (25th, 21:20).

Westmont finished 16th in a field of 21 teams at Bureau Valley.

Top finishers for the Sentinels were Requiron in 37th (18:12) and Gordon in 62nd (18:40).

Asa finished 80th (19:15) and sophomores Pleva (109, 19:45) Tom Dea (153, 20:59) rounded out the scoring.

•On Saturday, the DGS girls cross-country team competed at the Minooka Flight Invitational.

The varsity team placed sixth out of 14 teams in the flighted race. Maggie Seitz started the competition in flight 7 and ended with the highest Mustang finish with second place (19:52).

Lizbeth Alcantara placed fifth in flight 6 in 19:35. Emily Qualizza

placed 6th in flight 5 in 19:25.

In flight 4, Jill Boyle placed 7th with 19:45. Becky Versaskas ran well in flight 3, placing 5th in 19:01. Michaela Hackbarth ran flight 2 and finished eighth in 19:13. Katie Stapleton had the fastest DGS time of the day in flight 1, finishing in sixth place with 18:26.
