Westmont to purchase several properties for flood mitigation

The Village of Westmont plans to purchase three contiguous properties on the north block of Warwick Avenue for the purposes of stormwater management in the neighborhood.

The properties are located at 412, 414 and 416 North Warwick Avenue.

The Village Board voted unanimously to move forward with the purchase at its Aug. 6

meeting. A purchase price was not made available at the public meeting but budgeted bond funds will be used for the purchase.

Paper shredding fundraiser The village of Westmont will host a paper-shredding event at its weekly street fair and classic car show to be held Aug. 13, where residents will be allowed to discard documents and papers.

While the shredding is free of charge, a $5 donation per box or bag of paper is encouraged. All

proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics Illinois.

The Westmont Police Department and Citadel Information Management are hosting the paper-shredding fundraiser, which will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Bank of America parking lot during the Westmont Street Fair and Cruisin’ Nights event, held on Cass Avenue in downtown Westmont.

A radio-controlled model aircraft demonstration is also scheduled for the weekly fair in the parking lot of Manning School – north of Norfolk Street on Cass.

“We do our best to make sure we offer something for everyone at the Street Fair,” Westmont Special Events Office Coordinator Kristina Wrobel said in a village press release. “It should be an exciting night.”

Public Service Appreciation Westmont Public Works employee Dan Cantarino was recognized with the Public Service Appreciation award by the village board and Mayor Ron Gunter at the board’s Aug. 6 meeting.

Cantarino was commended for his efforts earlier this year to assist a resident and her dog who were victims of an attack by a larger aggressive breed dog.

While out on a job with another public works employee, Cantarino came upon the attack in progress.

He was able to separate the smaller dog from the jaws of the larger dog, thereby saving the smaller dog’s life.

“Deputy Chief [Ross] Brenza and I agree wholeheartedly that Dan’s actions saved that dog’s life,” Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said.

Village considers amendment to video gaming code Public hearing expected for Aug. 12 The village of Westmont will hold a public hearing Wednesday on potential changes to the village’s video gaming code.

On Aug. 4, the village held a meeting for all liquor license holders in the community to discuss a possible text amendment to the village code regarding regulation of video gaming.

“We’re following up on suggestions and concerns regarding the proximity of video gaming establishments from one another,” Community Development Director Jill Ziegler said in a press release.

The public hearing is expected to be on the agenda for the Aug. 12 planning and zoning commission meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. at village hall, 31 W. Quincy St. The public is invited to attend the meeting and participate in the discussion.

strategic plan For the past several months, the village of Westmont has been working on the development of the community’s strategic plan.

The strategic plan will guide the village’s vision for the future, as well as core values, goals and a plan to accomplish specific

action items.

“The planning process is bringing together a diverse representation of the village with the village board to create a draft plan for the community to review,” village spokesman Larry McIntyre said in a release. “The strategic plan process has engaged village staff, various community leaders in one-on-one interviews and workshops with representatives from the community.”

The village said it will assess all of the information gathered during planning meetings up to this point and develop an early draft for village board review.

A preliminary draft of the document would then be published for residents to review and provide input during a community meeting in the fall.

Based on this input, the village said it will prepare a final draft for the village board to consider.

“It is exciting to get people together who are passionate about the community and then discuss together how we move forward to make our village great,” Village Manager Steve May said on the village’s website. “We expect many good ideas and initiatives as a result of this process.”

Consultant Lynn Montei has led the strategic plan process

and will continue to oversee its development throughout the fall, according to the village. The village board is expected to adopt the strategic plan before the end of the year.

Watering plants, vegetation A record amount of rain fell in June, but Westmont village forester Jon Yeater said residents should still water plants and other vegetation.

Any particular storm event may not bring a good soaking rain adequate for the new plants, and additional water is needed,” said Yeater, who noted that the last 30 days have been incredibly dry, despite the high rain totals. “We strongly encourage residents to water new plantings once a week, rain or shine.”

In addition to their immediate property, the village is asking residents to water new plantings and vegetation in the parkway, the area between sidewalks and curbs.

“Maintenance of the parkways adjacent to your property is the responsibility of the homeowner,” Yeater added. “The village simply does not have the resources to water all of the plants in the various parkways throughout the community, so residents are asked to help out with this beautification effort.”

Public invited to tour new cardiovascular pavilion Hospital says redesigned facility ensures more convenient care Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is inviting the community to attend a dedication and open house for its new Deb and Alan Feldman Cardiovascular Pavilion.

The open house is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Aug. 25 at the hospital, 3815 Highland Ave. As part of a panel discussion on topics related to heart health, cardiologists Stephen Rowley, Eleanor Ross and Gaile Sabaliauskas are expected to answer attendees’ questions.

The Feldman Cardiovascular Pavilion expands the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation and diagnostics area, bringing it

closer to the observation unit and catheterization laboratory.

The redesigned facility ensures more convenient care for patients, whether they’re coming in for routine diagnostic tests or recovering from a life-threatening heart attack. The project’s final phase was completed in July.

The pavilion is named after Deb and Alan Feldman in recognition of their generous gift to the hospital’s capital campaign. The Hinsdale couple is a long-time supporter of Good Samaritan Hospital, and they have served on various councils at the hospital.

The Progressive Village Performance Network will address sexual orientation and homophobia in its upcoming performance of “The Laramie Project.”

The documentary-style play recounts the death of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard, an openly gay college student who was murdered because of his sexual identity.

The incident, which took place near Laramie, Wyoming, in 1998, sparked a nationwide debate about hate crimes and homophobia.

Any one of those accomplishments might not seem significant, but doing a little bit here and a little bit there with small bits

Oktoberfest offers food, family fun Sept. 12 event to benefit District 58 schools The Education Foundation of District 58 is preparing to host a German-style Oktoberfest, which benefits District 58 schools.

In its second year, the family event draws from the Downers Grove community and surrounding suburbs to celebrate the fall season and give one last farewell to summer.

Oktoberfest is set to take place between noon and 11 p.m. Sept.

12 in front of the Downers Grove Metra Station at Burlington Avenue – between Main Street and Mochel Drive.

Opening the Downers Grove Oktoberfest Big Music Stage is the popular band Frank ‘K’ Duo & Company, who is best known for authentic German-style music and Lederhosen. Local band Soulful Remedy, from Downers Grove, will close out the festivities.

This year’s music and entertainment lineup includes folk, brass, blues and rock.

Saturday’s music lineup also includes featured musicians from Downers Grove music school Garage Band U, dancers from Pure Vibe Dance Center and local DJ Dan spinning songs to keep everyone dancing through the night.

The education foundation said traditional German fare and beverages, including a selection of delicious treats, will be for sale. And, a feast would not be complete without an ice-

Village considers longrange infrastructure, service spending Continued from Page 1 Major components of the village’s infrastructure include streets, sidewalks, the stormwater system, the water system and facilities. Village facilities are comprised of seven major buildings, including village hall, the police station, public works and fire stations.

Village staff provided the village council with a report on infrastructure that included trends, issues, solutions and strategies. Each of the areas outlined options to consider in the future.

According to Village Manager David Fieldman, the strategic goal is to provide top quality infrastructure and service. Each of the systems involved has a recommended level of service, which ultimately requires funding. Commissioners were asked to discuss the options presented and direct village staff how to proceed in these areas of the plan.

Street maintenance options would be to continue the current plan, which costs the village about $4.5 million per year, or to go above and beyond the established maintenance plan, which would cost additional funds.

Fieldman said the village has the funds for regularly scheduled maintenance through several sources, including motor fuel tax, property tax, home rule sales tax, telecommunication tax and grant funding.

Additionally, Fieldman noted that approximately 99 percent of the village’s roadways are in maintainable condition.

According to Mayor Martin Tully, that percentage is a significant improvement from five years ago when that figure was closer to 22 percent.

Commissioners generally agreed that the funds allocated for sidewalk construction be temporarily reallocated to other projects, while allowing the village to respond to sidewalk repairs and construction on a case-by-case basis.

Fieldman pointed out that the recommended level of service is to have a sidewalk on at least one side of every street and those sidewalks to be maintained in a safe condition. Currently, 95 percent of all street segments have sidewalks on at least one side, according to the village.

Based on Tuesday’s discussion, village staff will move forward and create priority action items that will be discussed at the last long-range plan meeting scheduled for Aug. 18.

The stormwater system has a different set of issues, as the village is only able to perform about half of the recommended maintenance due to limited funds.

Fieldman said the stormwater utility fee generates about $3.7 million in revenue each year, but the recommended maintenance to the system requires approximately $7.8 million.

To make up the difference, the village could continue to adjust the stormwater utility fee annually or seek alternative sources of funding.

It has been an emotional year for former Raider David Cooke.

In December his younger brother, Chad, died while playing a pick-up basketball game. Two weeks ago, Cooke put on a show at the 66th Illinois Open – setting records along the way.

The 2011 Bolingbrook High School graduate carded a record score of 199, 16-under-par, at Royal Melbourne Country Club, in Long Grove, beating Web.com pro Vince India (11-under 204).

His 128 total over the final 36 holes was also a tourney mark in the Illinois PGA event.

Cooke’s five-shot win matched the largest margin of victory by an amateur in tournament history equaling Gary Hallberg’s winning margin in 1977.

The 22-year-old Cooke opened his final round with an eagle. After a good drive, he nailed a 144-yard pitching wedge to six feet and dropped the putt for an eagle. That broke his three-round tie with Brad Marek, who birdied.

When he has holes like that, Cooke said he thinks he has some extra help from his brother.

“I have had that feeling in the last six months or so,” Cooke said. “There are some holes where I feel like he is helping out up there. Chad was a fan of the Illinois Open. There are certain things like when I make a huge putt or hit a shot that is a lot closer than

I thought it was going to be and everything is going my way, I feel that he is watching over me.”

After the opening eagle, he posted two more birdies, then birdied the fifth and eighth holes to go out in 6-under 30, building a four-stroke lead over India at the turn. Cooke bested the next low amateur, Lincolnshire’s Jack Watson, by 13 strokes.

“It was something I’ve related to for a few years and something I’ve paid attention to. This is something I have had friends play in so it is something I was happy to succeed in,” Cooke said. “The difference maker for me is when I am hitting the ball close with my shorter clubs and making putts.

When I get into a groove and know the distance I am hitting them really makes a difference.

“This course was a good balance.

It rewarded hitting the ball far, but you had to be in the fairway. It was very playable, but you had to be spot on. The greens were really undulating and you had to control the spin going into the green. Getting the ball close on the approach shot was important because you had shorter putts and you had to make sure you converted into birdies.”

Cooke won a pair of tournaments at North Carolina State University last season, but it was nice for him to win on Illinois soil.

“It is awesome being one of the first players to come out of Bolingbrook high school and pursue golf and play in college,” he said. “My high school golf coach (Chuck Marik)

Hit king coming to Joliet by mark gregory sports reporter

It has been more than a decade since Pete Rose has been to Silver Cross Field in downtown Joliet.

Since then, the team has a new name, new owners and play in a new league, but still want the advice that comes with the Major League Baseball hit king.

Rose will return to Joliet Wednesday, Aug. 19 as a special, one-day, hitting coach for the Joliet Slammers.

“He has been here before when his son was playing, but he hasn’t been here in a while, so we are excited to bring him back,” said Slammers Assistant General Manager Heather Mills.

Rose will be in uniform and coach first and third base for an inning for the Slammers as well as talking to the team before the first pitch. This will be Rose’s first on

Playing at Bolingbrook High School was where it started.

“Being in school in North Carolina, they don’t get to see it firsthand. Being able to play well in front of a home crowd was really cool. It makes me feel proud of what I accomplished.”

The timing of the Illinois Open was also important to Cooke, as it followed the weekend of the inaugural Chad Cooke Classic basketball tournament in Lisle. The tournament was run

by Charleston Hope, a College of Charleston student-run charity that is run by Chad’s girlfriend Emily Hoisington and something Chad was passionate about.

Cooke wore the Charleston Hope logo on the final day of the tournament.

“I wanted to wear it because it was the first time Emily would see me play. Having her there watching me for the first time, I wanted to show her how much it means to me that I can be a part of the foundation by wearing that shirt on the last day,” he said. “It was a bonus that I got to take pictures in it with the trophy. That charity meant a lot to Chad and it means a lot to me.”

He will be available to meet and sign autographs with fans on the concourse for a $40 fee. Vouchers are needed for the autograph and must be purchased prior to the game.

For those wanting an even closer experience, the event will open with a VIP meet and greet in the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame.

The meet and greet package costs $114 and will include a reserved seat ticket to the game, a Slammers baseball to be autographed by Rose, a photo of each participant with Rose, and the opportunity to hear a short speech by Rose.

Regular ticket prices for the game are also different for this game, as club level tickets are $18, reserved are $15 and lawn seats are $10.

The Slammers are expecting to see ticket sales increase, but that is not just the one-time attendance

“Of course, we are looking forward to the increased ticket sales, but more importantly, we are looking to bring out people who have never come out before,” Mills said. “We still have people out there who don’t realize there is professional baseball in Joliet.”

During his playing days, Rose played 24 seasons with the Red, Phillies and Expos.

He holds the record for most hits in a career with 4,256 as well as the record for most career singles (3,215), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), and plate appearances (15,890).

During his career, he was a Rookie of the Year, a 17 time All Star, , MVP, World Series MVP, and three time World Series Champion.

He was banned from baseball and is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown because he bet on baseball.

Winning the Illinois Open is motivation heading back to school, but Cooke said being motivated

Water comes into play on several holes on Coyote Run, including the par-3 13th.

risk and reward Coyote Run rewards the smart players as much as risky ones For the first time we reviewed a course south of Interstate 80 as we played Coyote Run Golf Course in Flossmoor.

The course starts with four consecutive short par-4s, a great chance to start off you round with some great scoring.

The first hole plays just 360 from the tips and 33 from the white tees.

You have to drive over water and there are bunkers that could trap up a long drive just short of the green and a bunker to the left of the green.

Next is a 339-yard par-4 that plays straight and slightly uphill at the green. It is a large green, but it is important to hit your approach to the right area or a three-putt could ensue.

The third hole is 348 yards and has bunkers off the fairway and a bunker in front of the green, to the right.

It is followed by a risk-reward par4, my favorite hole on the course.

That is because I drove the green and

made birdie. It plays just 280 from the white tees, but plays over some water and a large group of bunkers in front of the green. Unless you can play a fade, which is my natural taylor’s take shot, laying by scott taylor up is the best option. I was able to bend it left-to-right around the bunkers and up to the green.

The fifth hole is just 135 yards from the white, but is 215 from the blue. It, too is played over water, although it shouldn’t come into play, similar to the previous water holes.

So, from the white tees, you shouldn’t have more than a wedge as an approach into the greens (at least I didn’t), through the first five holes. Unfortunately, my iron game

is struggling right now and I made four bogeys with the birdie.

The sixth hole offers another short wedge approach shot. It plays at 500 yards that doglegs right with a creek in front of the green, almost forcing a layup. The green has a big slope from front to back, so it is important to land on the same side as the hole.

The seventh hole is a difficult par4 at 373 yards. Water lines the left portion of the fairway, making the hole play longer as you have to bail out right. A 133-yard par-3 follows (over water) and the front nine finishes with a 533-yard par-5, which bends right.

The back nine starts with a dogleg left par-4, which plays 420 yards and is slightly uphill at the green.

The 11th is a 163-yard par-3 and is followed by a short, but difficult par-4. At just 306 yards, the fairway shrinks towards the water in front of the green, making it a challenging driving hole.

The 13th is another par-3 over water and the 14th is a straightaway par-5 at 491 yards. The 15th hole is another risk/reward hole at 305 yards with a dogleg right. The fairway slopes towards the water on the right, and there is out of bounds left. Many

will lay up and hit an iron into the green over the water. I went for the green and landed in a perfect spot, 50 yards short and left of the green, nearly out of bounds. Of course, I still failed to make par. It does get very tight around the green.

One more par-3 over water (161 yards) follows and then there is the final par-5 at 510 yards, which doglegs left.

The final hole is a slight dogleg right that plays just 340 yards but with bunkers surrounding the greens.

Overall I enjoyed playing the course. It offered good scoring holes and risk/reward holes. They also had some holes where you had to play smart and take your medicine.

Unfortunately, with all the play out there (which is a good thing as well) the greens are filled with ball marks. While this might affect your putting from time to time, it is still worth coming out to play.

The fact that it is just $52 during the week to play for nonresidents is even more reason to make the trip to play the course. The weekend fees are very reasonable as well at $62.

All in all, this is definitely a place to visit.
