A collaboration between the Woodridge Park District and village of Woodridge, the event brought in an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people. And although the first day of the festival was cancelled due to rain, the remainder of the annual event went off without a hitch.

Village approves redevelopment of old village hall site Proposal includes mixed-use, planned unit development with two, five-story buildings By bugle staff nweditor@buglenewspapers.com @DownersGrvBugle

The LisleVillage Board approved a proposal from Marquette Real Estate Investments to redevelop the old village hall site, which the village called a “major step” forward in downtown redevelopment efforts.

Trustees voted June 15 to approve a resolution that authorized a redevelopment agreement between the village and Marquette. The board also approved an ordinance vacating and conveying Spencer Avenue to Marquette so it can be included in the redevelopment plan.

“This project has been a long

time coming,” Lisle Mayor Joe Broda said. “But, I’m convinced that in Marquette, we have a developer that will make the wait worthwhile.”

Marquette’s proposal includes construction of a mixed-use planned unit development that consists of two five-story buildings linked by public space.

The ground floor of the development will include 14,500 square feet of retail, commercial or restaurant space, public plaza areas and private amenities, according to the village. The buildings will also house 201 luxury rental apartments and 252 parking spaces, and street and associated landscape improvements will also be completed.

The village said it expects construction to begin in the fall and wrap up in December 2016.

Redeveloping the old village hall site was a strategic recommendation from the Downtown Lisle Master Plan. The village said the recent recession delayed new construction projects, but added that

Village will move forward with Clyde Estates project

The roadway reconstruction and drainage improvement project proposed for the Clyde Country Estates subdivision of Downers Grove got the go-ahead from the village council, despite objections from some area residents.

The council voted at its June 16 meeting to award contracts for the project to Hancock Engineering of Westchester and A Lamp Concrete of Schaumburg.

Hancock will be paid $90,668 for providing engineering services,

such as construction observation and resident engineering services, and A Lamp Concrete will receive $2.36 million for roadway reconstruction, reshaping of roadside ditches, construction of bio-swales and intermittent storm sewers, roadway resurfacing, and parkway restoration, among other work.

Hancock’s portion of the work will be paid out of the village’s capital projects fund. The stormwater fund and the remaining balance of a 2012 $25 million bond issuance will fund the reconstruction portion to be paid to A Lamp Concrete.

Despite the board’s vote, several residents of Clyde Country Estates

still feel the project is not necessary.

Some of those residents voiced their concerns at the June 16 meeting, saying there are inaccuracies with the scope of work.

Laurel Bowen feels the project needs more due diligence and asked the council to consider delaying the project or making amendments to its scope.

Another resident, Connie Butler, said she felt there was a lack of attention to detail.

“You’ll want other projects done in the future,” she said. And if this $2 million project isn’t going to be done right, how will we have faith in a $40 million project?”

Mayor Gina Cunningham announced last week that she selected Kaleshia Page to fill a vacancy on the village’s board of trustees.

The village said Cunningham is seeking concurrence on Page’s appointment to the village trustee position at the July 2 board meeting.

The vacant trustee position created after trustee Tim Goodwin resigned earlier this year will run through April 2017.

“We are delighted that Ms. Page has decided to join us as a trustee on the village board,” Cunningham said in a release. “She has demonstrated a passion for our community with prior service on the plan commission. We look forward to working with her on the board.”

Page served on the village’s plan commission for approximately two years and has been a resident of the village for eight years.

“I’m honored to have this opportunity to contribute to our community,” Page said. “...I’m looking forward to using my personal and professional experiences to help guide me in my role on the village board.”

The mayor and board completed their selection process after interviewing 10 interested residents, according to the village.

“We want the job done right, and we hold our staff accountable to insure what we contract for is what we get,” he said.

Other board members agreed that the project will not please everyone but it is the best balance of compromise.

“There is no project that everyone will agree with,” Commissioner David Olsen said. “Our job is to balance the concerns. This is a good compromise and a good value.”

The project is scheduled to

begin in July and be completed in the fall.

Traffic study brings changes Several streets within the area of Downers Grove bounded by Ogden Avenue, Main Street, Fairview Avenue and Warren/ Rogers Avenue will see changes in the future, following the results of a traffic study conducted last fall.

The village council heard a report on the study at its June 16 meeting and is expected to vote on the recommendations at its July 7 meeting.

Last year, Benet’s Mark Schuessler failed to make the ESCC AllConference squad as a junior.

That helped motivated him in the offseason to take things to the next level.

That, he did.

Schuessler, a 6-foot, 7-inch outside hitter for the Redwings, finished the season with 457 kills, 131 digs, 29 blocks and 43 aces. He was also the ESCC Player of the Year and led the Redwings to a regional championship and nearly a sectional win, totaling nearly 60 kills in the two matches.

For his accomplishments, Schuessler is the Voyager Media Boys Volleyball Player of the Year.

“It was one of the best seasons I have ever had,” Schuessler said. “In club this year I had one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. I feel like I improved a lot from last year where I wasn’t even all-conference. I feel like my confidence was never down.

I always played liked my next swing was for the game.”

“Mark is an outstanding allaround player who dominates from every position on the court,” said Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren. “His athleticism and versatility make him difficult to defend. His impressive kills from the both front and back row, combined with his killer jump serve, make him a force to be reckoned with.”

While Schuessler was strong throughout the year, it was his playoff run against some of the state’s top competition, which put him over the top.

He was the go-to hitter for Benet in a pair of three-set matches in the playoffs.

“Every time I see that we’re in a tight spot, I tell them to set me,” Schuessler said. “I know I am going to be able to pull it out.”

Gronk Nation entertains Chicagoland Speedway Superbowl champion tight end and family spend Father’s Day weekend in Joliet

Superbowl champion and all-pro tight end Rob Gronkowski spent the father’s day weekend at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet with his dad and four brothers.

The family flew into Illinois from five different “As a dad, its really special.” said Gordon Gronkowski. “We never get together that much. To have all five of them together is phenomenal for me.”

The family was scheduled to serve as grand marshals for the race and Rob had been tabbed to drive the pace car to kick off the Owens Corning AttiCat 300 Saturday night, but when the rain postponed the race until Sunday, the Gronkowski family were not able to stay around.

But just because they didn’t call for racers to start their engines or pace the field to the green flag, does not mean the energetic clan didn’t entertain.

The brothers, especially youngest brother Glenn, an all-Big 12 fullback at Kansas State, had the media center in stitches during their press conference as well as having a blast with fans during a question and

answer session in the Infield Fan Zone.

While there, Rob admitted when he practiced in the pace car earlier in the day, he may have gone over the pace speed, saying he had the pace car in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Even that lap, he said, made him appreciate NASCAR drivers.

“I wasn’t going 185 like them, but it is a challenge. It takes practice, hard work and dedication. They have to have mental toughness and they are up there with athletes in their competitiveness.”

The brothers answered every question from fans, sometimes with a PG-13 response, but the crowd loved the playful candor .

The question and answer segment ended with the family inviting several fans up for a dance party, while Rob signed autographs for lucky fans.

One of those fans, Katie Kessen, flew in from North Carolina just to see Rob. “I flew in last week to see Rob and I got to dance with him,” she said.

“I am a huge Patriots fan and I have family in Illinois and they always come to the race, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. I came and got an autograph. It made my whole day.”

The day was also a win-win for

another Patriots fan.

“I am a NASCAR fan and I love the Patriots,” said Dane Libby from Oneida, Illinois “We have had season tickets for five years and it all just worked out.”

While the Gronkowski family is known for having a good time, their time in Chicagoland was not all fun and games.

The family also spread charity across Chicagoland with their charity , The Gronk Nation Youth Foundation. The family met with several families from the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

The Gronk Nation Youth Foundation is an organization dedicated to inspiring and supporting our youth to reach their maximum potential by empowering them to be positively involved in sports, community activities, education, and fitness.

Its mission is to help youth stay actively involved in school and sports and provide them with the tools needed to help them follow their dreams and live a happy and more successful life.

“I was fortunate growing up. I had my brothers around, my friends, my dad. I had access to everything I needed to be successful, Rob said.

“I had equipment, fields, whatever it was. We decided to start a charity to give back to kids that aren’t in the position that my brothers and I were in as we were growing up.

“The Gronk Nation inspires kids to get out on the playgrounds and football fields. We donate equipment

XFINITY RACE Rains came in full Saturday night, washing out the Saturday night’s Owens Corning AttiCat 300 race at Chicagoland Speedway.

The move to Sunday may have hindered some, but it played to the favor of two drivers, as well as the fans that came back to watch.

Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney battled the final dozen laps, with Jones taking the checkered flag, finishing a weekend sweep, as he won the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series American Ethanol 200 at Iowa Speedway Friday.

Jones, the youngest NASCAR driver to win two races in the same weekend, has run in all three series this season.

The win was his second NASCAR XFINITY Series race of the season, and eighth top 10 series finish.

“I got the inside of (Blaney) and just barreled into (turn) three as hard as I could to clear and slid in front,” said Jones. “Fortunately it worked and he didn’t try to cross us over or anything else.”

Jones started 11th in his No. 54

“It seemed like last year I’d be into these situations and be so nervous,” the 19-year-old said. “This time its like ‘I’ve got this.’ I felt like I’ve done it so many times throughout the year and throughout the day that it felt more natural. That’s definitely a product of seat time and being in the car every week or the truck every week. It’s been a huge, huge help.”

Jones led 94 of the race’s 200 laps while Blaney topped the field for 43 laps.

Blaney wrecked his No. 22 Hertz Ford Saturday in qualifying and was in a backup car Sunday, starting in the back row.

“I thought it was a good day for us, a decent day,” Blaney said. “I felt like I threw it away yesterday wrecking our primary. For our team to get a backup car out and work as hard as they did and have a car contending for the win and to be leading in the last little bit and then just not pull it off, that really speaks volumes to them about how well they prepared.”

The race featured a track record 23 lead changes, plus seven cautions for 39 laps.

Series points leader Chris Buescher finished fifth and maintained his

series lead with 528 points, 29 points ahead of second place Ty Dillon.

“It’s a good points day, that’s how it ended up,” Buescher said. “The pit road speeding penalty is on me. ...

I got us a little bit behind there and put us in a bad spot but the guys did a good job coming back.”

Chase Elliott, who won last summer’s XFINITY Chicagoland race spun out with 23 laps to go and finished 14th.

Walsh was a three-year starter and two-time all-CSL South team member.

He added 237 digs, 22 aces and 66 blocks.

“Evan is a true competitor who brings his best to the court,” said Maine South coach Gary Granell.

“He is someone other teams know they have to contain in order to be successful. It will be difficult to replace a player like Evan, but he has left the younger players a standard to strive for.”

Jon wheaton Lockport senior tallied 143 kills, 77.5 blocks and 33 digs. He is killed the ball at a 41.1 percent on the season. He was part of the Marist Invite All-Tournament Team.

gage wuestenfeld Wuestenfeld totaled 386 kills, 89 blocks and 48 aces this season and was the go-to hitter for Plainfield Central.

“Whether in the front or back row, Gage has had a huge impact on the offense, and has clearly been one of the top hitters in the state,” Hurlburt said.

Reed won at Daytona in the season-opener in the NASCAR. He is the second full-time NASCAR driver to win this season in an ARCA race, following Sprint Cup driver Trevor Bayne, who won at Pocono Raceway.

“Seat time is seat time,” he said.

“Anytime you can be racing doorto-door it hones your skill. From that standpoint, there is always something to be had from driving a race car.”

Lights out adds up to big savings for District 99 Total savings just under $6 million

Since it started 13 years ago, District 99’s energy conservation program has helped save almost $6 million in energy costs.

Jim Kolodziej, director of facilities for Downers Grove Community High School District 99, provided the board of education an update on the program during its June 14 meeting.

Kolodziej said the projected energy costs for October 2002 to March 2015 were approximately $23 million, but the actual cost was a bit over $17 million. The result was a savings of 26 percent, or just under $6 million.

That response was noticeable in the diverse crowds attending the four-day festival, with large groups from throughout the western suburbs pleased by the variety of family friendly activities available.

Three generations of the Lye family have attended the Woodridge Jubilee. Rosanne Lye first brought her children more than 10 years ago, and she now brings her grandchildren to the festival grounds.

“It’s great [that] they have so much for the younger children to do,” she said while watching her grandson on a carnival attraction.

“We keep coming back because it’s something the whole family can enjoy.”

The village and park district supplemented these family activities Saturday by setting aside an entire section of the grounds with activities appealing to small children.

A rock climbing tower, bounce house and face painting tent staffed by park district volunteers were set up in the center of the festival grounds for easy access.

“Those are big numbers,” Kolodziej said. ”The program has done well.”

Kolodziej said the savings were the result of replacing outdated systems, installing LED lights, and updating heating and cooling control systems. However, he added that a lot of the success is owed to the teamwork of staff members and students.

“We are seeing human behavior changes such as staff turning off lights and closing windows,” he said. “And, we are still looking for ways to improve.”

As part of the program, all District 99 students now study water conservation, renewable energy sources and solutions, and sustainable agricultural practices.

“The students are really

“We’re really pleased with the family turnout,” Pettit said.“Despite the unpredictable weather, it’s nice to know this event is important and fun to so many families.”

That sentiment extended to a separate carnival area, which featured rides as gentle as a Ferris wheel and intense as the Cliff Hanger. On Sunday, children and teens could purchase a $20 pass that gave them unlimited rides.

Ronetta King and her 3-year-old son, Ali, spent the afternoon in the carnival area.

“He’s enjoyed today so much,” she said. “This is our first time coming, and we’re definitely coming back. We haven’t even gotten to the food yet.”

Food options at this year’s Jubilee included Zacarelli’s Pizza and Little Jimmy’s Italian Ices, offering festival attendees everything from cheese fries to hot dogs.

In addition to great food, music and rides, the festival also featured a fishing derby at nearby Lake Harriet. Anglers of all ages were able to win prizes based on the size of their fish, and many winners sported fishing vests and caps for the rest of the day.

As the festival drew to a close Saturday, Pettit was again enthused by the success and attendance.

“This year has been up there as one of the best yet,” she said

Board Vice President Terry Pavesich thanked Kolodziej, and said the program helped save a significant amount of money, which can be put towards District 99 students.

Board aPProves Bids for 2015-16 school year Bids for copy paper and custodial, maintenance and grounds supplies were awarded at the June 15 meeting.

The copy paper bid was awarded to Murnane Paper for the amount of $71,768.90. Kolodziej said the

winning bid is not much different from last year’s low bid.

Board member Julia Beckman questioned whether the district was seeing a decrease in the use of paper. Kolodziej said there has been a reduction in the use of colored paper but noted that the usage of white paper has remained the same for the past five years.

Bids were also awarded to several companies for both custodial, maintenance and grounds supplies.

All cleaning supplies comply with the Illinois Standards for Green Cleaning, Kolodziej added.

Mark Staehlin, the district’s controller, said Quest has done well working with the newest nutritional guidelines. He noted that Quest has made efforts to increase lunch participation last school year by conducting a student survey and tweaking its offerings.

“They are a very creative group and always trying new things,” he said.

Superintendent Mark McDonald also noted that reducing the lines is key to increasing participation and said the district is looking into removing guardrails to make lines move faster.

Stormwater utility incentives on hold After hearing Commissioner Greg Hose’s proposed amendments to stormwater utility incentives, the village council agreed to make the proposed changes part of the long-range planning process.

Hose’s proposed changes included not limiting the number of rain barrels per property and increasing the incentive for rain gardens and permeable pavers.

However, commissioners William Waldack and William White said the incentives should stay as they are, since the village is considering changes to the stormwater fees.

“I like the proposed incentives, but I agree that we should wait,” Commissioner Gina Vattimo said.

“We don’t want to give something to the residents and then take it away.”

Olsen also said the topic should be included in long-range planning, which began earlier this month.
