Members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church pay final respects to late pastor

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI FOR THE BUGLE Michael Danek has touched countless lives during his time as pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Westmont and throughout his life.

Danek, who parishioners knew as “Father Michael,” passed away May 18 at Presence Resurrection Hospital due to complications from diabetes. He became the pastor at Holy Trinity in June 2011, and members of the church fondly remembered the impact Father Michael, 56, had on their parish.

“My whole life, Holy Trinity has been my home, [and] never has a pastor changed our parish quite like Father Mike,” Westmont resident Lisa Ryan said. “We are so blessed by all he has done and all his legacy continues to do.”

That legacy included creating the parish’s first Young Adult Ministry program and establishing Holy Trinity’s Parish Pastoral Council. see

Westmont police joined hundreds of officers Friday throughout the state by ascending

Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops and lending a hand to Special Olympics Illinois.

Illinois law enforcement personnel covered more than 150 Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops

during the 13th annual Cop on Top fundraiser, which helps raise awareness and accept donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Westmont Police Chief Tom

Mulhearn, along with members of the police department and the Citizens Police Academy, conducted rooftop stakeout Friday at the Dunkin’ Donuts location at 19 W. 63rd St. “This is a great cause and we’re happy to be part of this event,” said Mulhearn, who has participated in the Cop On Top Program for the past five years. “I want to thank all of the participants who partake, all of the volunteers who help make this happen, and Dunkin’ Donuts for [its] generosity.”

Anyone who who visited a participating Dunkin’ Donuts location and made a donation between 5:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Friday received a free donut.

Individuals who donated at least $10 also received a Law Enforcement Torch Run travel mug and coupon for free coffee.

At some Cop on Top locations, items such as Torch Run T-shirts and hats were available to purchase.

Last year, police officers

throughout Illinois raised approximately $430,000 during the Cop on Top event.

“More than $2 million has been raised from this event over the last 12 years, and we’re hoping to set new records this year,” Illinois Torch Run Director and Sherman Police Chief Eric Smith said in a release.

To recognize Special Olympics Illinois athletes and police officers who took part in the fundraiser, Dunkin’ Donuts created a special donut with red and white icing depicting Special Olympics colors. The company also donated $15,000 to the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Over the past 29 years, the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $35 million and increased awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their accomplishments.

Theater group takes audiences over the rainbow Progressive Village Performance Network to present adaptation of ‘Wizard of Oz’ in June

The story of Dorothy’s travels down the Yellow Brick Road in the magical land of Oz has been a favorite of audiences over the decades.

But the the Progressive Village Performance Network will add a different spin on “The Wizard of Oz,” presenting a new and exciting version of the traditional story based on the original collection of “Oz” books by Frank Baum.

“The musical contains the same songs and many of the characters we’ve all grown to love, with a

slightly different twist,” said Lynda Richey of PVPN. “We know the story, we love the old characters, and now we have a chance to meet and know new characters…”

The show will be performed at Westmont High School, 909 Oakwood Drive, Westmont, throughout the month of June.

Performances are scheduled for June 12-14, June 19-21 and June 26-28, with Friday and Saturday

State legislators to host Children’s Safety Expo Annual event set for Saturday in Downers Grove A Traveling World of Reptiles show, Touch-a-Truck exhibit and interactive safety demonstrations are just some of the fun events planned for this year’s Children’s Safety Expo. Hosted by state Sen. Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, and state reps. Ron Sandack, RDowners Grove, and Jim Durkin, R- Western Springs, the annual free event will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Lakeview Junior High School, 701 Plainfield Road, Downers Grove.

“Promoting children’s health and safety remains a top priority for me,” Radogno said. “This year’s Safety Expo offers children and parents a great opportunity to learn about issues such as cyber bullying, nutrition, bicycle safety, college saving programs, as well engage in fun interactive activities.”

The first 300 children to arrive will receive a free lunch bag, and there will be other free giveaways.

This year’s demonstrations

include a True Balance Karate class, the Traveling World of Reptiles show and the Darien Police K-9 Unit. Additionally, the LIFESTAR Chicago medical helicopter will be there from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

“This safety expo promises to be a lot of fun for kids of all ages,” Sandack said. “It has become one of my favorite events of the year, and I hope a lot of families come out and enjoy all of the free activities.”

More than 30 trucks will be at the Safety Expo, and children can

see, touch and get behind the wheel of their favorite vehicle.

Local professionals will be available to answer questions about the equipment and the work they do.

“This is always a very wellattended event, and families come back every year not just for the information that is available for parents, but for the fun, hands-on activities for children,” Durkin said.

“The Traveling World of Reptiles Show and the Touch-a-Truck exhibit are especially popular.”

“You are the stars, and the world is watching you,” said the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of Special Olympics. “By your presence, you send a message to every village, every city and every nation: A message of hope, a message of victory.”

Designated hitter Kyle Domin has stepped up big-time in the postseason, and last Saturday, he came through again during the fourth inning of the Sentinels’ eventual 6-2 rained-shortened victory over Holy Trinity that enabled Westmont to take the Benedictine University Class 2A sectional championship.

With the bases loaded, Domin crushed one into the left-center field gap over the heads of two Holy Trinity outfielders and to the fence some 340 feet away. All three runners scored as Domin motored to third. The relay throw skipped past the third baseman, and Domin raced home for a 6-0 Sentinel lead.

Domin, a junior, got some good-natured ribbing about his hit afterward. Westmont coach D.J. Cocks jokingly referred to it as a Little League home run, yet he and the Sentinels are grateful that Domin delivered.

“That five-spot in the fourth with Kyle Domin stepping in and getting that Little League grand slam there,” Cocks said.

“Basically a triple, Little League grand slam, whatever you want to call it. I’m proud of the way he’s stepped up in the playoffs for us.”

Domin, who had a runscoring single in the third inning that put Westmont ahead 1-0, delivered a no-doubt grand slam in the Sentinels’ 7-1 sectional

semifinals win over North Shore Country Day on May 27, and also homered in Westmont’s 6-5 triumph versus rival Lisle for a regional title.

“In my heart I’m calling it a home run, but everybody else is calling it a triple so I’ll just stick with it and say it was a triple,” Domin said with a grin. “It feels really good. It’s my first year on varsity, and to be a part of this and not on the bench anymore is pretty fun.

“It was fun to hit it. I’m the DH so I’ve got one job and I think I did it pretty well. It was really important to the team and it just felt really good.”

What’s also fun for the Sentinels is that they took home their second sectional championship plaque in as many years. Westmont tangled with the winner of the Reed-Custer sectional—either Herscher or St. Bede Academy (Peru, Ill.)— at the Benedictine University Supersectional Tuesday. The Herscher-St. Bede game was held on Monday.

The Sentinels and Holy Trinity played the first 4 1/2 innings in a steady, light rain, but the rain got heavier after Holy Trinity batted in the fourth and plated its only runs of the contest. The umpires stopped the game, which was an official game at that point, before Westmont batted in its half of the fifth. The game was delayed for around 70 minutes before the umps called it.

Harris earns three medals at state meet

CHARLESTON – Winning one state medal is a feat a lot of track and field runners are lucky to accomplish in their career.

Winning two is tougher, but winning three in the same season places an athlete in rare company.

Lisle’s Aaron Harris earned a trio of medals in Class 1A, placing third in both the 200 (22.17) and the 400-meter dashes (49.11), while he took sixth in the 100 (11.01) at the state meet last weekend in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois

University.

Harris is the first Lisle runner to ever claim three individual medals in the same meet and the first to win three medals overall in a year since Chris Jones placed in the 200, 400 and 1600 relay in 1996.

“It was a long day. I have to give props to everyone in the finals. They are all working hard to get here,” Harris said.

“Everyone goes for the gold and I went for it, but I worked hard to get here and just ran my race.

That was all I could do. I was happy to represent my school, not only as an athlete, but as a student and showing good sportsmanship because that’s

what Lisle teaches.”

Harris competed in all three events in an accelerated time schedule because of approaching severe weather, which meant he didn’t have the normal break between races.

“I had to focus and not let anything distract me,” he said.

“This was my second time here.”

After the 200, Harris was already thinking about doing better next season – even taking a page from the book of his friend, Kahmari Montgomery of Plainfield Central who won the 3A state title in all three sprint events.

“There are 364 days until prelims and I will be back here going for the gold,” Harris said.

“Anything anyone else can do, I can do too. I have to come back strong and go out with a bang senior year. I train with Kahmari and I look up to him.

He motivates me and I thank him. The big brother always wants the little brother to do better.”

In Class 3A, Downers Grove North senior Ryan Clevenger placed fourth in the 1600 run, posting a time of 4 minutes, 11.22 seconds.

“My coach told me the exact way it was going to go,” he said. “He told me Zach Dale (of Conant) was going to push it and try and run away from the field and I had to line myself up behind him and catch him and I couldn’t do it, but another PR. I wanted to win, but I will take fourth with a fast time any day.”

Clevenger said the race was run at a fast pace.

“It felt really fast,” he said.

“After two and a half laps, I felt like I was finishing the race. I haven’t been in a race that fast since last year, but I kind of expected it, so it didn’t catch me off guard.”

South senior Nick Kersting placed sixth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.75.

In the 3200, North sophomore Alec Danner placed 25th in 9:41.18, while South junior Jack LaLonde was 37th in 9:53.15.

In the triple jump, Downers Grove South senior Josh Jones competed in the triple jump, but did not advance with a leap of 44-09.75.

In the discus, Downers Grove North senior Nick Janicki had a throw of 151-06, while South junior Nick Mitchell threw 1460.

1A Outside of Harris, Lisle had junior Nathan Woltmann who competed in the pole vault and missed on the opening height.

Lisle senior Jared Arellano had a discus after a throw of 129-08, but failed to advance to the finals.

In the shot put, Westmont junior Sam Soltwischhad a put of 44-05.75, but did not advance.

Westmont senior Nick Dea competed on Saturday and finished 32nd in the 3200 with a time of 10:35.40.

The Westmont quartet of Anthony Cordero, Leo Foertsch, BJ Zakhem and Mitch Perrotta posted a time of 8:31.71 in the 3200 relay and did not qualify for finals.

Westmont senior Quintin Brown also failed to advance to the finals in the 400, as he ran a 51.28 in the prelims.

Redwings fall in sectional

Benet knew from the start that things wouldn’t be easy in the Oswego East Sectional.

Despite that the Redwings won a regional championship and came close to winning a sectional semifinal.

In that semifinal, the No. 3 Redwings fell to No. 2 Glenbard East 28-26, 22-25, 25-22 Friday in Oswego.

“I’m so proud that we left everything on the court,” Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren said.

“Glenbard East is a great team.

To be down and come back, I couldn’t ask for more. I’m proud of them. This is an amazing group of men who have fought hard all year.”

Benet had a pair of set points in the first set, but lost the final three points. There were also a couple of questionable calls that went against it in that set.

“I wasn’t happy with how that went,” Van Eekeren said. “When you work so hard and get things taken away from you, you have to keep your emotions in check.”

Benet bounced back in the second set and took control early, 16-10, and maintained a multiple point lead the rest of the way.

The Redwings though fell behind 4-0 to start the third set. They battle back to take a 7-6 advantage, but Glenbard East took control from there,

building a 22-16 edge. Three kills from Mark Schuessler kept the Redwings alive, but a kill ended the match for Glenbard East.

“I think we left everything on the court there,” Schuessler said.

“I think we had a great season.

We played to our highest level tonight.”

Schuessler ended the match with 27 kills.

“Schuessler and (Scott) Kleiser were amazing,” Van Eekeren said. “Schuessler has been great all year. He was amazing. Serving was great. We just came up a little bit short.

Benet advanced to sectional play via the Wheaton Warrenville South Regional, where the Redwings beat the host school in a thriller, 25-17, 25-27, 28-26 as Schuessler totaled 31 kills.

“Last year we didn’t go that far and we wanted to get past (regionals) in the first place,” Schuessler said. “That brought us a bunch of energy going into this, but I guess it wasn’t enough.”

“It is a very difficult sectional to come out of and a difficult regional,” Van Eekeren said.

“Some teams won regionals that we have beaten two or three times. It was a hard-fought battle for us. We do appreciate it because we earned it. The kids played hard. I don’t think we won a regional title in three years, so that was exciting. I’m proud of what we accomplished this year.”

It was the last game for six Benet

seniors, including Schuessler and Kleiser.

“This is an amazing group of young men,” Van Eekeren said.

“They will go far in life because they work hard and are good people. They were good leaders for our team and we will miss them.”

TENNIS Downers Grove South had another strong showing at the state meet, placing 10th.

Tony Leto finished in the top 16 after winning his first three matches. He fell in the fourth round, but came back to win in a 10-point tiebreak in the sixth consolation round. He then suffered a heartbreaking 3-6, 6-1, (11-9) loss to keep him from advancing to the consolation quarters.

Christian San Andreas finished in the top 24, winning his first three matches before losing his last two.

The doubles team of Lawrence Hiquiana and Zach Wood also finished in the top 24, also winning their first three matches before losing their final two.

•The Benet duo of Riley Marshall and Patrick McGuigan finished in the top 24 in the state.

They opened with a win before a quick loss. However, they rebounded with fourth straight wins before being eliminated.

Stephen Kovach and Pete Mannebach of the Redwings went 2-2 at state.

Heart-wrenching season comes to an end for DGS

No matter the sport or even the gender, when a team’s season comes to an end, no matter if it’s the first round of the playoffs or in the state final game, there are tears in the post game huddle.

Players are saying goodbye to a season, seniors are saying goodbye to a career and a coach is saying goodbye to a team.

Just as always, there were tears after Downers Grove South’s 2-0 loss to Lyons Township May 26 in the opening match of the Hinsdale Central Sectional, but the tears were not because they were saying goodbye.

The tears were because they already had.

On March 30, the Mustangs were only one game into the season, when they said goodbye to Kailee Miller, a senior defender that died suddenly at age 18.

Since that game, South rallied around her memory and “played for 11,” which was Miller’s jersey number.

“It was unimaginable,” said senior Ava Porlier through her tears. “This game, I am not even mad at the result. I am proud of how this team came together.

A lot of people didn’t think we could get this far because of everything that happened and we broke through and proved everyone wrong. We know if she

was still here, this is what she would have wanted us to do. She was someone that always gave it her 100 percent and that was the only way we could give back to her was to give our all and play for her every day. We got more upset when we came off the field and won if we didn’t give our 100 percent.”

At the beginning of the season, all of the players, including Miller, we asked to come up with team goals by first year head coach Chris Hernandez. Miller’s goal was to win the regional title, which was a goal shared by many on the team.

After her death, the Mustangs made that a rallying cry for the season.

South accomplished that goal May 22 when it defeated Glenbard East 1-0 to win the regional title.

“At the beginning of the year, I had the girls write down their goals and what they wanted to do. Me being in my first year, I knew what I wanted and for the most part, we were on the same page,” Hernandez said.

“We wanted to win conference, beat certain teams, have certain records. But, the number one thing on the list was something Kailee spoke up about and it was the first thing on our list and that was to win the regional for the first time in three years.

To be able to do that and do it the right way, with effort and teamwork and collectiveness is

something that will hold true. In tough games it is the glue held us together. We are a young team, so going forward, we know what it takes to win a regional and play in a sectional semifinal. It is something that will stick with them.

“To come across the top teams that we played and maybe not always get the result, but to understand what it takes to get the result is huge, especially for being so young. For them to overcome such adversity, I am incredibly proud of them.”

Hernandez said he reminded the Mustangs before and during the game that win or lose, to remember how to play the game.

“Kailee was known for always giving it all every time,” he said.

“Whether it was preseason weights, extra fitness after practice, during practice and games, she always gave 100 percent until that horn rang.

That was what we talked about before the game and at halftime.

We wanted to remember who we were playing for and what it meant to play for 11 and memorializing her in that way is a good tribute.”

Being such a young team, South could have folded emotionally early on and no one would have blamed them for a losing season, but that was not their attitude, as the team battled until the final horn of the final game.

“We pulled together as a team and we had people we played for and that brought us together,”

said senior Miyax Leon. ”After all we have been through, it was hard to come to practice and just play without Kailee in general. I am proud of this team. I wouldn’t have changed anything about the way we played even though the results didn’t go our way today.”

Hernandez respected that in the players.

“For the first year for myself taking over this program, it doesn’t get much tougher than that. For as young as we are – we only start three seniors – so for them to face these hurdles so early in their playing career has been huge,” he said. “They could have either collapsed inside themselves or rise to the challenge and play for her as a team – and that was the route they chose as a team.”

“I’m just really proud of the way we came together and won this sectional as a team. Kevin Melvin pitched a great game for us today and was awesome.”

Melvin struck out four over five innings, improving his record to 8-3. Meanwhile, the Sentinels took a 30-8 record into their supersectional matchup, and had Austin Loehman (9-0) going on the bump.

Interestingly, neither of the Donovan brothers—Joe, a sophomore, and Charlie, a senior who was named the Gatorade’s Illinois Player of the Year last week—figured into the outcome last Saturday. They went a

combined 0-for-4, but the way in which the rest of the lineup came through is a testament to the Sentinels’ overall depth.

Melvin helped himself by going 2-for-2 to complement Domin’s big day.

“I think we’re playing well,” Charlie Donovan said. “We’re finding ways to get runs across the plate. Maybe we could use a little more energy at the beginning of games, but overall I think we’re just finding a way to get it done.”

Cocks hopes that advancing to supersectionals for the second straight season—and hopefully, a return trip to Peoria for the state tournament this weekend—lays to rest any doubts that preseason

prognosticators had about his Sentinels, who established a single-season school record for victories (28) with their regional championship win over Lisle.

“A lot of people doubted this team because of the senior class that we lost (after 2014),” he said.

“A lot of people thought that with the seniors that we lost, we couldn’t get back here.

“I saw a lot of preseason rankings in 2A that had us as far down as 20(th), and we took all that to heart. These guys stepped up and people doubted us, and we got third in the state last year and they took it as a challenge.

They stepped up, and now we’re in the Elite Eight so I’m really proud of these guys.”

More than 1,000 people attended his funeral Mass on May 23. Guests included Bishop R. Daniel Conlon of Joliet, the Rev. Eugene Szarek of

Saint Hedwig Parish, and numerous priests from the Congregation of the Resurrection in Joliet and the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The Rev. Steven Bartczyszyn of Saint Hyacinth Basilica delivered the homily during the Mass and shared memories from his longtime friendship with Danek, which goes back more than 50 years. The two friends attended the same elementary and high schools. After attending the same seminary, both were ordained as priests the same year.

Downers Grove police recognized for traffic safety The Downers Grove Police Department was named top agency in its class in the 2014 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge.

In the category of municipal agencies with 66 to 100 officers, the award recognized the department’s overall approach to traffic safety.

Downers Grove Police Chief Robert Porter will accept the award at the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge awards ceremony in August.

The department said traffic safety is of its top priority, saying that officers work throughout the year to educate residents and students on the importance of vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Lisle Library kicks off summer reading program Saturday Registration for “Then & Now,” Lisle Library’s Summer Read program, begins Saturday with a kick-off party starting at 11 a.m.

In addition to registering for one of the library’s three programs, an old-fashioned Good Humor Man will be serving ice cream, and live music will be provided by 1960s group Ivory Tower.

“We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary this year, so we’ve planned some ‘1960s-style fun’ for our patrons,” said Nicole Mueller, communications coordinator for the library. “We’re going to have classic games like ‘Wooly Willy’, ‘Operation’, and a giant ‘KerPlunk’ for kids. Adults can reminisce by visiting our old-fashioned ice cream truck and enjoying some 60s rock.”

The program runs from June 6 to July 30 and is divided into adult, teen and child age groups, allowing readers of all ages to participate in a tailored program.
