The first snowstorm of the season creates hazardous conditions for residents and their pets. The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control reminds residents to take special precautions to keep their pets safe throughout the winter months.

Bring all pets indoors: All dogs and cats, whether they are acclimated to outdoor living or not, must be brought indoors during sub-zero weather.

As the responsible caregiver of a pet, you should provide an indoor heated shelter for your animal.

Salt and ice: Both salt and ice can irritate your dog’s footpads. If your dog will tolerate them, foot coverings are advised.

If your dog will not tolerate foot coverings, avoid the salt when possible and wash the dog’s paws with warm water when you return home.

Frostbite: Dogs and cats may have fur coats but they also have exposed areas that are susceptible to frostbite.

Limit their time outdoors for waste elimination only. Walks should not exceed 10 minutes in sub-zero temperatures.

Check their pads when you get home and wash with warm (not hot) moist

towels. If you suspect frostbite on any extremity, including the nose or the tips of the ears, contact your veterinarian.

Keep them leashed: More pets become lost in the winter than any other season because snowfall can disguise recognizable scents that would normally help them find their way home.

Prevent your pets from becoming lost by keeping dogs leashed on walks and, just in case you are separated from your pets, make sure their collars have up-to-date contact information and they are microchipped.

Be seen: Due to Daylight Savings, many of us are relegated to walking our dogs in the dark.

Keep yourself and your dog are safe by wearing reflective gear (clothing, leash, collar, etc.) and keeping your dog close when walking on the street.

Properly secure potentially poisonous material, such as antifreeze: An-

tifreeze is extremely toxic to all living creatures.

Keep antifreeze bottles out of the reach of animals and clean up all antifreeze spills immediately.

Be prepared: Winter brings extreme weather that can cause power outages. Have an emergency plan and make sure it includes your pets.

Have an emergency kit with enough food, water and medication to last your pets at least five days. You may never need it, but if you do, you will be thankful you planned.

While laws in some municipalities may require only that pet owners provide food, water and shelter, an outside doghouse may not be suitable during severe cold weather.

All residents are urged to be alert to pets being left outside for extended periods and to call authorities if they see an animal that could be in danger.

DuPage County Announces 2025 Scholarship Winners

“These candidates demonstrated inspiring traits and achievements while persevering through significant life experiences, including first-generation college students and single mothers returning to school,” said DuPage County Human Services Committee Vice-Chair Paula Deacon Garcia, who served on the selection committee. “We believe these scholarships will enable these students to capitalize on their opportunities and achieve their goals.”

The CSBG scholarship supplements the cost of tuition, books, supplies, and other school expenses. The scholarship is funded and designed in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for low-income individuals with high academic potential. Recipients include students who are the first in their families to attend college, single mothers returning to earn their degree, and recent high school graduates.

“This has been a huge weight lifted off my shoulders,” wrote Samantha Gonzalez, a Warrenville veteran who is studying aviation flight technology at Lewis University with a long-term goal of making airline travel safer.

“Pursuing an education has shaped my character and has given me a broader understanding of the world.”

Recent Downers Grove high school graduate Kayden Smith, who is studying health sciences at North Central College, noted: “This scholarship will help me achieve my dream…I am determined to further my education by taking challenging courses to make a positive impact on my community.”

Several recipients noted that the scholarship will benefit not only them personally but the wider community in the long-term.

“Education has always been a guiding light of hope in my life’s path,” wrote Francesca Mosley, a Naperville woman studying to be a certified paralegal assistant. “I do not view this scholarship solely as just an investment in me, but it is an investment that will be utilized indirectly to pour back into the community I plan to serve with it.”

What can renters do to secure their financial futures?

Renting an apartment or a home is convenient for people just starting out in life who may not have ample savings or a high enough credit score to secure a mortgage.

Renting also may be necessary for individuals who have been priced out of a real estate market that has remained high over the last several years.
