Students at Wood View Elementary School receive free books through a literacy partnership aimed at encouraging reading, supporting education, and helping children build personal home libraries.

BOLINGBROOK,

IL —

Students

at Wood View Elementary School will receive free books on May 22 through a literacy partnership between the Zeta Omicron Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and award-winning Nigerian-American author and educator Ada Ari.

The initiative is designed to encourage literacy development, increase access to books, and help elementary school students build personal home libraries. Organizers said providing children with books they can own and take home helps foster a stronger connection to reading while encouraging continued learning outside the classroom.

During the visit, members of the Zeta Omicron Sigma Chapter will personally distribute books to students and spend time engaging with

Lockport Township to Host 9th Annual Senior Expo

Annual event will connect seniors with health resources, safety information, free services, giveaways, and more than 40 local organizations dedicated to supporting older adults.

LOCKPORT, IL – Lockport Township

Supervisor Alex Zapien’s Office will host the 9th Annual Senior Expo on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lockport Township Government Office, 1463 S. Farrell Road in Lockport.

The free community event is designed to connect senior citizens and their families with valuable local resources, health services, and programs that support independent living and overall well-being.

The annual expo has become a popular event for area residents, bringing together dozens of organizations, healthcare providers, community groups, and local businesses focused on serving older adults.

More than 40 vendors and exhibitors are expected to participate this year, offering information on healthcare services, senior programs, transportation resources, financial planning, wellness initiatives, housing options, and safety services.

Representatives from local agencies and organizations will be available throughout the morning to answer questions and provide educational materials.

Among the featured participants will be the Lockport Police Department, which will share information related to senior safety, scam awareness, and fraud prevention.

Officials said the department’s participation is intended to help seniors recognize common scams and stay informed about ways to protect themselves from financial exploitation and identity theft.

The event also will include several health-related services for attendees. A

mobile OSCO Pharmacy unit will be on site providing immunizations, including vaccines for pneumonia, shingles, RSV, and other illnesses.

Organizers noted that attendees only need to bring an insurance card and photo identification to receive vaccinations.

In addition, a community shred truck will be available in the parking lot from 8 a.m. until noon, allowing residents to safely dispose of sensitive documents and reduce the risk of identity theft.

Township officials encourage residents to take advantage of the free shredding service while attending the expo.

Visitors can also enjoy a variety of giveaways and activities throughout the event, including raffle prizes, complimentary refreshments, and an ice cream social.

The first 400 attendees will receive a special walk-in prize while supplies last.

Township officials said the expo continues to grow each year because of the strong interest from local seniors seeking information and opportunities to

the children to promote the importance of reading and education. The event is part of the organization’s continued efforts to support youth development, academic achievement, and literacy programs within local communities.

Ada Ari, founder of Ada Ari Books, has become nationally recognized for her work promoting culturally inclusive children’s literature and literacy engagement.

Her publishing company focuses on creating books that reflect diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences while encouraging young readers to see themselves represented in literature.

stay active and connected within the community.

No reservations are required to attend, and the event is open to all residents. Seniors living in Lockport Township and surrounding communities are especially encouraged to participate.

For additional information about the Senior Expo, residents may contact the Lockport Township Supervisor’s Office at 815-838-0380.

Through partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and community organizations across the country, Ada Ari’s literacy initiatives have helped place books into classrooms and directly into the hands of students in underserved communities.

Organizers said the partnership with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. aligns with a shared mission of educational empowerment and community service.

“We’re excited to partner with or-

ganizations that are committed to investing directly into children and literacy,” said Ada Ari. “Every child deserves books they can proudly call their own.”

Representatives from the Zeta Omicron Sigma Chapter said the book giveaway reflects the sorority’s commitment to supporting education and creating opportunities for young students to develop strong reading habits early in life.

Research has consistently shown that access to books at home can positively impact literacy skills, vocabulary development, and longterm academic success.

The event at Wood View Elementary School is expected to provide students not only with new reading materials, but also with encouragement and inspiration from community leaders and literacy advocates who are passionate about helping children succeed.

JOLIET, May 19, 2026 – The Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board of School Inspectors has approved Joliet District 86 graduate José Jaramillo as the district’s new Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Labor Relations, effective July 1, 2026. Jaramillo will succeed Dr. Judith Zito-Nash, who is retiring after years of service to the district.

The appointment marks a homecoming for Jaramillo, who once attended District 86 schools as a student. He attended A.O. Marshall Elementary School and later graduated from Gompers Junior High School before continuing his education and eventually building a career in school leadership and administration.

Jaramillo brings more than 22 years of experience in education to his new position. Over the course of his career, he has held a variety of leadership roles focused on student services, school operations, and human resources.

For the past five years, he has served as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Operations at Fenton Community High School District 100 in Bensenville, Illinois, where he helped oversee staffing, personnel management, operational planning, and district initiatives.

Prior to his work at Fenton, Jaramil -

lo served as Assistant Principal for Student Services at Glenbard South High School.

He also worked as Director of Deans at Willowbrook High School and previously served as Dean of Students in Plainfield School District 202.

Throughout his career, he has developed experience in employee relations, student support services, leadership development, and district operations.

Jaramillo began his higher education journey at Joliet Junior College before earning a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in the Teaching of Spanish from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

He later earned a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from the University of Saint Francis, further preparing him for district-level leadership responsibilities.

District leaders said Jaramillo’s familiarity with the community, combined with his administrative experience, made him a strong fit for the role.

“We are pleased to welcome Mr. Jaramillo to the District 86 family,” said Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse. “We know he will jump right in and

help finalize all the details necessary for a successful start to the new school year.”

As Assistant Superintendent for

Human Resources and Labor Relations, Jaramillo will oversee personnel matters, labor relations, staffing initiatives, and other operational responsibilities that support District

86 employees and schools. District officials said they look forward to his leadership as preparations continue for the upcoming academic year.

Why Workers Over 55 Are Less Likely To Change Jobs

Though career experts often say it’s never too late to make a professional change, research suggests workers become far less likely to switch jobs after age 55.

According to an analysis from USAFacts titled “How Long Americans Stay,” employees between the ages of 25 and 34 typically remain with an employer for a median of just 2.7 to 3.2 years.

By comparison, workers between 55 and 64 stay in the same position for a median of 9.6 years, reflecting a major shift in career stability later in life.

Several factors may explain why older professionals are less inclined to pursue new opportunities.

Employees who have spent decades with one company often enjoy higher salaries, greater retirement benefits, more vacation time, and seniority that

would be difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Some may also prefer the familiarity and security of an established role rather than taking the risk associated with starting over at a new organization.

Still, staying put is not the only path older workers choose. A 2023 report from AARP found that many professionals age 45 and older who changed jobs experienced positive results after making the transition.

Half of respondents said changing employers improved their mental health, while 48 percent reported earning more money after the move.

Others cited greater flexibility, better work-life balance, and increased job satisfaction as benefits of pursuing a new opportunity later in their careers.

The findings suggest that while older workers may be less likely to seek change, career moves after age 55 can still lead to meaningful personal and financial rewards.
