Local Target store to close in February Romeoville store at the northeast corner of Airport and Weber roads has 104 employees

News broke last week that Target would be shutting the doors of underperforming stores and broke with it shoppers’ spirits in Romeoville, a store listed to close.

Target is the anchor tenant at the Shops of Romeoville at the northeast corner of Airport and Weber roads, one of the first stores to be built in the area that had become a catalyst for growth in creating a strong retail presence in Romeoville.

Target representative Erin Conroy said the company closes a handful of stores each year through a very intentional process to ensure the continued

health of its portfolio.

“We have a rigorous process in place to evaluate the performance of every store on an annual basis, closing or relocating underperforming locations as needed. Typically, a store is closed as a result of seeing several years of decreasing profitability. This decision was not made lightly,” said Conroy.

The Romeoville store has 104 employees and Conroy said its team is one of its greatest assets, noting that all eligible Target store team members are being offered the option to transfer to other Target stores.

The store will remain open for holiday shopping and is slated to close Feb. 3, 2018. In total, Target is closing 12 stores this year, two in Illinois, including its

Romeoville and Matteson locations.

the case when another larger retailer Office Max, decided to close its doors. However, shortly after TJ Maxx opted to build

PACE approves 1st major fare hike in 6 years Riders will have to pay more per ride and per transfer, passes remain same

The PACE suburban bus transit agency’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve a budget that included the first major fare hike since 2009.

Whether they’re using regular routes, premium routes, dial-a-ride services or paratransit services, riders will have to pay more per ride and per transfer. The cost of PACE and PACE /CTA passes remains the same. As previously reported by the Bugle, the fare increase is one of several steps the transit agency is taking to make up for funding shortfall.

Agency spokesperson Maggie Daly-Skogsbakken told this newspaper that, while PACE understood that fare increase could hurt riders, especially paratransit riders, it was important for the transit agency to maintain its services and keep its capital projects on track. Without it, she said, PACE’s ridership might suffer in the long run.

On Jan. 1, 2018, the cash fares for regular routes will go up from $2 to $2.25, while Ventra card fares will go up from $1.57 to $2. The increase will be more dramatic for premium routes, going up from $4 to $4.50.

Premium routes include commuter shuttles, a summer shuttle service to Six Flags Great America, and routes that link riders to Wrigley Field, Soldier Field and Guaranteed Rate Field on game days. Express shuttle routes 755 and 855 serve Plainfield, while routes 850 and 851 serve Bolingbrook. Route 768 and Route 775 provide express service to Soldier Field and Guaranteed Rate Field from Bolingbrook.

For the first time in recent history, the cost of transferring between routes will increase as well.

The regular transfers will increase from $0.25 to $0.30. The transfers between buses serving Joliet will remain free.

The surcharges for transfers between local and premium routes will increase as well. Riders playing one-time fares currently have to pay $2.50, while riders with all passes except the 30-day Premium Pace/CTA Pass have to pay $2.25 per ride. In the beginning of 2018, those surcharges will go up $2.80 and $2.50, respectfully.

The call-and-ride services, such as the one in West Joliet, have the same fares as regular routes, so they will go up as well. The ADA paratransit services, which severe both the City of Chicago and suburban six-county region, will also see increases, from $3 to $3.25.

PACE Board of Directors approved the budget during its Nov. 8 meeting. The directors reported that, during the public hearing, increase in paratransit fares stood out as a major concern.

Director Terrance Carr, who represents central suburban Cook County, said that he attended the public hearing in his region. Five people attended, and most of the comments were positive, with only concerns expressed about public transit fares.

Director Thomas Marcucci, who represents DuPage County, got similar feedback.

“We had two folks showed up who wanted to speak,” he said.

“Both of them are members of our ADA community, and there was expression of concern about fares, and [it was] appropriate, but thanks for the level of service we maintain.”

Marcucci mentioned that, while people weren’t necessarily pleased with fare increases, they didn’t protest, either.

“I mean, we haven’t raised fares for 8-9 years,” he said. “People understand. Very few things cost the same as they did 9 years ago.”

Director Linda Soto, who represents Lake County, also heard concerns about paratransit fares. “[Two paratransit riders who spoke] were basically limited to [Social Security] income, and they were concerned that [it would hurt] their budget,” she said.

Karen Tamley, who represented the City of Chicago Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, said that the hearings in Chicago, particularly on the South Side, were well-attended, with paratransit riders expressing concerns about quality of service and having to deal wit fare increases while living on fixed income.

“I think, as we ask people to pay more, I think we [need to] commit ourselves to provide the most excellent service we can provide,” Tamley said.

Public Safety Director retires after 30 years Public Safety Director Tom Ross, is set to retire after a 30-year career

BY BUGLE STAFF Bolingbrook’s top cop, Public Safety Director Tom Ross, is set to retire after a 30-year career in public service.

Ross, was appointed as the village’s first Public Safety Director, in January 2015, when the village took a departure from having both a police and fire chief, combining the two roles, under Ross’ leadership.

Ross said serving the residents of Bolingbrook has been “an absolute honor” and said the decision to leave was not an easy one.

“I’m going to really miss the people I work with the most” he said. “Bolingbrook is a great community. We’re fortunate to have the

support of our residents, business owners and our elected officials – it has made my job much easier.

I was lucky enough to serve with some of the bravest and most dedicated men and women I’ve ever known, said Ross. “I want to thank Mayor Claar for giving me the opportunity, it has been the highlight of my career.”

Ross was hired as a Patrol Officer in 1987 at age 21. He went on to work in the Gang Unit for six years, and was made a detective in 1999. In 2000, he was promoted to sergeant where he worked patrol, then supervised the Gang Unit, and then was in charge of training.

In 2005 he was promoted to Lieutenant, in 2006 to Commander, and in 2008 to Deputy Police chief.

In January of 2015 he was named Public Safety Director.

Regarding his decision, Ross said “In my particular situation, with 30 years of service and at 51 years of age, the Illinois Police pension system encourages retirement.”

“I’m proud of what our team has accomplished. Over the past three years the crime rate has continued to decline, and Bolingbrook is a safer community. We’ve held the line on discretionary spending in the budget, and we have new technology and needed equipment for our first responders. We’ve increased training, and developed solid leaders in the command ranks.”

“The time has really flown by” Ross said, “I grew up in Bolingbrook, and we raised our family here. The kids are grown now, and the time is right. I’m looking forward to starting the next chapter of life”.

“Tom has faithfully served the Village for three decades, and has done an outstanding job during his time as director, Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar said. Both the Police and Fire Departments have stronger relationships throughout

our diverse community thanks to his committed engagement with all our residents. The Trustees and I are grateful for his dedication and leadership.”

Claar said Bolingbrook is fortunate to have a solid group of public safety professionals already in leadership positions in both the Police and Fire Department and has named 26-year veteran Ken Teppel as the new public safety director.

Teppel has been currently serving as Deputy Police Chief. He is a lifelong resident of Bolingbrook who was first hired as a police cadet in 1988, and then as a patrol officer in 1990. He worked his way up through the ranks over the years including being the School Resource Officer at Bolingbrook High School. He holds two Masters Degrees and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Charity Trees benefit local area nonprofits Charity Trees are located at end of The Row near the roundabout inside Bolingbrook Promenade The Promenade Bolingbrook is celebrating its partnership with four area nonprofits by kicking off its inaugural Charity Trees holiday campaign Designed to raise awareness and funds for each charity, The Promenade Bolingbrook teamed up with Heart Haven Outreach, Operation Christmas: Bolingbrook, West Suburban Humane Society and DuPage Township Food Pantry.

Each organization will decorate its own holiday tree and collect donations on one of four Saturdays beginning November 18 and running through December 16.

“We’re proud to kick off Charity Trees this year, and we’re very pleased to support these important organizations and to give each one its own Saturday,” said Tom Castagnoli, Promenade Bolingbrook general manager. “If guests and shoppers are unable to bring donations on a charity’s as-

That is the mantra, the mission, and the sole purpose of the largest service community event in the area, the Northern Will County Harvest Saturday, to take place Nov. 18.

Members of all walks of life, come together, pitch in and help out, pulling resources to collect food and donations to stock area food pantries.

It’s become the norm for hundreds of residents to be knocking on doors, collecting food from doorsteps, filling trunk loads of donations, and packaging it all up on the Saturday before Thanksgiving at St. Andrew the

“This really has become a Romeoville tradition that really involves the whole community coming together; it is amazing to see--I can’t believe they process everything in one day. Everyone does a great job and it really is from the heart and very special.”

Braasch said the group is asking for residents to donate nonperishable items to be placed in plastic bags outside their front door by 11 a.m. Nov. 18.

Forest Preserve approves 2018 Budget Budget features a $1 million capital enhancement plan for preserve and trail improvements

The Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board of Commissioners approved a balanced 2018 budget on Thursday, November 9, that features a $1 million capital enhancement plan for preserve and trail improvements.

“We’ll continue to focus on enhancing and improving preserves and trails to better accommodate visitors and expand opportunities to enjoy the forest preserve system,” said Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer.

The $47 million spending plan includes a $16.7 million operating budget and a $13.8 mil-

lion corporate fund property tax levy, which will pay for District operations in 2018. The corporate property tax rate is 0.0678 as compared to the current year’s extension of 0.0702, a 3.4 percent reduction.

The budget includes a $300,000 appropriation for the District’s infrastructure, maintenance and replacement program, which will expand to include bridge and shelter rehabilitation.

“Our commitment to maintaining and enhancing our existing forest preserves helps us protect the investment our communities have made in their forest preserves,” said Board Presi-

The District continues to maintain its AA+ credit rating, which it has had for the past seven years.

“The Forest Preserve not only offers excellent opportunities for our residents to enjoy their many trails, facilities and programs, but also prides itself on being financially sound as evidenced by its strong AA+ credit rating,” said John Gerl, the Forest Preserve’s chief financial officer.

One big project that will be funded in the 2018 budget is a major regional trail connection along Black Road that links the DuPage River Trail in Shorewood with the Rock Run Greenway Trail in Joliet. The link will include pedestrian bridges over both Interstate 55 and the DuPage River. The District’s 2018 budget includes $759,000 for the $2.6

million project, which is primarily being funded by two federal grants administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

OTHER BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: A new shelter at Isle a la Cache Preserve in Romeoville. This shelter will be big enough to accommodate 200 people and to host events and a variety of education programs. Also, accessibility improvements will be made to the preserve’s walkways and amphitheater.

The trailhead at Schneider’s Passage along the Centennial Trail in Romeoville will be upgraded with expanded and improved parking, a new latrine and

benches. A 0.9-mile section of the Normantown Trail will be constructed from 111th Street south to Rockwell Lane in Wheatland Township. Simultaneously, developers will be constructing a 1.4mile section of the trail from Vermont Cemetery south to 111th Street. Both sections are expected to open in 2018.

A new, larger event shelter will be built at Whalon Lake in Naperville. The shelter will accommodate 200 people and it will replace a smaller lakeside shelter that has a 25-person capacity. The smaller shelter will be relocated to the north side of the lake along the trail.

More than 4 miles of the asphalt Hickory Creek Bikeway in New Lenox and Mokena will be reconstructed to improve accessibility.

Great American Smokeout is this Thursday Your chance to commit to quit According to the American Cancer Society, since the first national Great American Smokeout in the 1970s to today, cigarette smoking among adults in the United States has decreased from 42 percentto about 17 percent.

In Will County, currently 13.5 percentof adults smoke, down from 19.6 percentin 2009.

At least partly credited for these decreases are the strong smoke-free indoor and outdoor policies, powerful media campaigns, and increases in the prices of tobacco products.

The Will County Health Department’s Tobacco Control & Prevention (TC&P) program has helped pass many tobacco-free indoor and outdoor policies throughout the county.

We provide Smoke-Free Illinois Act education, which is celebrating its 10th

year since being enacted in 2008.

TC&P works with the youth, through REALITY IL, to pass Tobacco-Free Parks polices to provide protection from second-hand smoke and tobacco litter in communities across the county.

The program also educates smokers and non-smokers through media campaigns and social media outlets.

TC&P’s latest initiative is Tobacco 21, which will raise the age to legally purchase all tobacco products from 18 to 21 years old. This movement is spreading throughout the US, with five states already passing Tobacco into 21 law.

Several ordinances have already passed throughout Illinois, and we hope Will County will join the call.

Most life-long smokers have their first cigarette before the age of 21.

We want to save lives early, and by increasing the legal age to purchase tobacco we hope to do that.

But even with the significant decrease of smokers, there are still about

1 in 5 US adults who smoke cigarettes.

Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States.

Smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

It is estimated that smoking causes 32 percentof all cancer deaths in the US, including 83 percent of lung cancer deaths in men and 76 percent of lung cancer deaths in women.

Tobacco use also greatly increases your risk for complications with Type 2 Diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Fortunately, over the past few decades, advocates have had remarkable success in changing attitudes about smoking, understanding nicotine addiction, and learning how to help people quit.

Secretary of State helps honor National Donor Sabbath Mom who received organ of 11-year-old victim of violence featured in PSA Secretary of State Jesse White joined recipients, donor families and faith leaders to recognize National Donor Sabbath, an interfaith campaign aimed at educating religious communities about organ/tissue donation.

In attendance was Darvece Monson, a kidney recipient who was given a second chance at life due to the generosity of her organ donor. Her donor was Takiya Holmes, an 11-year-old innocent victim of gun violence who

died in February.

White was also joined by Rachel Angela Moore, a heart recipient and nurse as well as members of the First Ladies Health Initiative of Chicago.

“We recognize this weekend in an effort to raise awareness in faith communities because people often say that their religion is the reason they choose not to participate in the state’s organ and tissue donor registry,” White explained.

“This is a myth we want to dispel since the majority of religions support and respect this act of generosity. The people in attendance are promoting and advocating donation and our recipients are examples of how organ donation improves the lives of many.”

Monson is featured in a 30-second

Public Service Announcement (PSA) about organ/tissue donation, which was submitted to approximately 100 radio stations statewide to bring awareness to the program.

During the weekend of Nov. 1012, faith communities in Illinois and across the country recognize National Donor Sabbath. Faith leaders and congregations participate in services and events to increase awareness of this vital program.

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, the majority of religious groups support organ and tissue donation including Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam and Judaism.

Currently, more than 116,000 people are waiting for organs nationally.

In Illinois, approximately 4,700 people are on the waiting list.

Bolingbrook man gets 10 years for assaulting minor Jury found Fred Mack Jr., 65, guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child in the early 2000s Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced last week that a Bolingbrook man was

sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child in the early 2000s.

Fred Mack Jr., 65, was found guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child at the conclusion of a jury trial on Aug. 23. The defendant sexually assaulted a girl who was 12-years-old and in the seventh grade sometime between 2003 and 2004.

The victim, who is now in her 20s,

reported the assault to Bolingbrook police in 2016. She was prompted to file a report with authorities while she was working in a dance production that dealt with sexual abuse.

The statute of limitations to file child sexual assault charges has been extended by state lawmakers on multiple occasions over the past decades and now stands at 20 years after the victim reaches the age of

18.

“This woman showed remarkable courage coming forward years after she was assaulted by this predator,” said State’s Attorney Glasgow. “Bolingbrook Detectives Ken Simpson and Tom Gallas conducted a first-rate investigation that enabled my prosecutors, Jeff Brown and Kelly Tebo, to finally bring him to justice.”

The defendant was a family

friend and a pastor who sexually assaulted the child on many occasions between September of 2002 and July of 2004, according to testimony presented at trial and sentencing.

The victim testified Mack molested her on as many as 100 occasions when she was left alone with him, some occasions predating the offense listed in the criminal charge.

Romeoville’s Cahue becomes third Spartan ever named to the IHSSCA All-State team

Up until Christian Duarte made the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association AllState team as a junior in 2014, Romeoville had only featured one other All-State selection — Tom Kowalski in 1988.

The year Duarte made the first of his two All-State teams, there was a freshman named David Cahue on the team that made the coaches take notice.

In four years, Cahue went from a freshman that turned heads during a preseason scrimmage, to a varsity starter his first year to the third All-Stater in program history.

“It is a great feeling,” Cahue said. “All the hard work and dedication I put in over four years and to finally be rewarded for it feels good.

“When (Duarte) made All-State his first time, I knew I wanted it

and knew I had to work and I hope me making it gives the young kids confidence that they can do it too.”

He now joins Duarte and Kowalski as a permanent fixture on the Romeoville wall of fame.

“When you are All-State, you are there for life,” said coach Nick Cirrincione. “That is something you can come back and show your kids. That picture never leaves.”

Cahue helped the team to a 165-2 record this season, a program record for wins.

“My four years here were pretty good. When I came in, I knew I had to work my butt off and to become a starter as a freshman was great because not many people get to do that. I improved each year and to make All-State as a senior is a big reward.

Bolingbrook’s Jordan leads Saints in win Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) scored 14 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter as the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team came back to defeat Taylor University 63-58.

Trailing 51-41 early in the fourth quarter, the fifth-ranked Saints (22) outscored the Trojans 22-7 the rest of the way. Jordan’s 14 points in the final period included two key late buckets. Trailing by one with 90 seconds left, Jordan converted on a three-point play to give USF its first lead since early in the third quarter. After a pair of Taylor free throws knotted the score at 58, Jordan nailed a jumper from just inside the arc that put the Saints ahead for good. USF was able to force two turnovers in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.

While Jordan’s scoring came late, Nichole Davidson (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) got the Saints off to a hot start in the opening minutes, scoring the team’s first 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Her jumper with 4:04 remaining in the first quarter put USF ahead 12-4. Taylor pulled within two, but St. Francis scored the final seven points of the period, including an Ivana Markovic (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) three-pointer, to lead 19-10 after 10 minutes.

The Trojans got back in the game with a 6-0 second-quarter run and remained within six points of the Saints throughout the rest of the half. A Taylor three-pointer at the buzzer cut the USF advantage to 32-29 at the break.

Taylor continued its momentum into the third quarter. The Trojans finished the period on a 10-2 run to lead by eight at 49-41.

Jordan and the USF defense, which held Taylor to just nine points on 1-for-9 from the floor and six turnovers in the fourth quarter, provided the comeback in the final stanza.

Davidson tied for the gamehigh with 23 points, while shooting 50-percent from the field. Jordan (16) and Markovic (15) joined her in double-figures. Jordan also dished out six assists, while Andriana Acosta (Crest Hill, Ill./ Joliet Catholic) pulled down nine boards.

USF was once again solid from the free-throw line, making 15 of its 16 attempts. St. Francis outrebounded Taylor 31-25 and

also won the turnover battle (1714). The Trojans were the better team from beyond the arc, knocking down 8-of-19 (42-percent) from distance.

Kendall Bradbury tied Davidson for the game-high with 23 points to pace Taylor.

The Saints will play their third game in five days when they open up CCAC play on the road against Roosevelt on Wednesday, November 15 at 5:30 p.m.

With the win, Michigan Tech improves to 2-0 overall, while the Flyers fall to 0-2 on the campaign.

Lewis shot 52.8% (28-for-53) from the field and 43.8% (7-for-16) from three-point range. Michigan Tech knocked down 52.7% (29for-55) of its field goal attempts and 45.5% (10-for-22) of its shots from beyond the arc.

• The Lewis University women’s basketball team used an all-

around second-half effort to pick up the 82-59 regional victory over Northern Michigan at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday (Nov. 12).

The Flyers shot 61.5% (16-for26) from the field in the second half, while Northern Michigan knocked down just 17.9% (5-for28) of their shots in the final 20 minutes.

Lewis junior forward Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) scored a game-high 33 points on 14-for-24 shooting.

Kelliher grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while dishing out five assists and adding two steals.

Lewis sophomore forward Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/ Johnston) was 7-for-8 from the floor to finish with 17 points, while junior guard Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) scored 11 points and dished out a gamehigh eight assists.

With the win, Lewis improves to 2-0 on the campaign, while the Wildcats fall to 1-1 on the season.

For the game, Lewis shot 60.4% (32-for-53) from the floor and 46.2% (6-for-13) from long range.

NMU converted 36.8% (21-for-57) of its field goal attempts and 18.8% (3-for-16) from beyond the arc.

Lewis forced 18 Wildcat turnovers - including 11 steals - leading to 30 points off of the NMU miscues. The Flyers limited their mistakes with nine turnovers for the entire game, coupled with 25 assists.

• The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (Nov. 13) that Lewis University senior middle hitter Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) and sophomore libero Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) have

been selected as the Baden/GLVC Women’s Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the period ending November 12th.

This is the second time in the past three weeks that the Flyers have swept the GLVC Weekly Awards. Lewis junior outside hitter Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) won the awards on October 30th. Hyland was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Preuss captured the Defensive Player of the Week award.

This is the fifth time that Schneider has won the award, while this is the first time that Katarzynski has won the Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Both were instrumental in helping Lewis to victories over Bellarmine (Nov. 7), Southern Indiana (Nov. 10) and Indianapolis (Nov. 11) last week.

“Statistically, we were really well-rounded as a team this past week and Aly and Ronni were certainly catalysts for us both offensively and defensively,” Lewis head women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. “I’m hopeful that we can continue this trend as we start postseason play this weekend.”

Schneider averaged a team-best 3.4 kills-per-set and hit .403 (34 kills, 5 errors, 72 attacks) in the three victories. Her most impressive performance was a 13 kill, four block assist outing, while hitting .579 (13-2-19) in a sweep over Southern Indiana.

Katarzynski averaged 6.89 digsper-set and finished with 62 digs

in nine sets of action. She helped the Flyers’ avenge their lone GLVC loss of the season with 27 digs in a sweep over Bellarmine.

Lewis opens GLVC Championship Tournament action on Friday (Nov. 17), as the Flyers take on eighth-seeded Indianapolis.

This is the seventh time that Kelliher has been recognized by the conference in her career.

In two regional victories last weekend, Kelliher averaged 30 points, 8.5 rebounds and five assists-per-game, while shooting 59.0% (23-for-39) from the field.

Her most impressive performance came in the Flyers’ 82-59 win over Northern Michigan on Sunday (Nov. 12). Kelliher scored a game-high 33 points on 14-for-24 shooting, including a game-high nine rebounds, while dishing out five assists against the Wildcats.

“Jess has been a competitor since day one,” Lewis head women’s basketball coach Samantha Quigley Smith said. “Her leadership and ability to buy into what we are trying to do makes her that much more effective.

“Jess’ ability to fill up the box score is truly amazing to watch,” Quigley Smith continued. “If she’s not scoring, she’s finding open teammates, cleaning up the boards, anything she can do to help her team.”

“He came out of the game with a sore ankle and they had his stuff off and I told him to get it back on and get out there,” Cirrincione said. “I don’t think he liked it,

After learning that lesson, Cahue played the rest of his career never missing a game.

In total, Cahue played in 86 straight games for the Spartans, putting up a career record of 4536-3.

“In four years, he never missed

a game.” Cirrincione said. “He has been beat up and banged up, but he has never asked out of a game.

That shows his toughness.”

Not only did he play in every game, he played almost every position for Romeoville.

“He played as a right defender, a stopper, a center mid, a right mid, a left mid, a forward,” Cirrincione said. “That is telling colleges that you will get a kid that can play

any position on the field at a high level.”

He will also compete in the classroom at that same level, as he posts a near 4.0 grade point average — something he is looking to better.

“He has been one of our coachable kids. In the offseason with his work there was never a problem, grades there was never a problem — he is pushing to

be above a 4.0 for his career,” Cirrincione said. “His grades are going to open even more doors.”

For Cahue, he is just looking for a college to be successful as he plays soccer and works towards a degree in sports medicine.

“I just want to go somewhere I can achieve success,” he said.

“I will be blessed to go anywhere and I hope the success I had here translates to college.”

Rental property not part of Baby Step 2 Pay off primary home before taking care of rental properties DEAR DAVE, I have a rental property that I still owe some money on, and I’ve just begun Baby Step 2 of your plan.

Should rental property debt be included in the debt snowball?

MATT DEAR MATT, No, it shouldn’t. Baby Step 2 of my plan is where you use the debt snowball to pay off all debt — from smallest to largest — except for your home. This, of course, comes after Baby Step 1, in which you save up $1,000 for a beginner emergency fund. I would include rental properties in the “home” category, and I urge people to get serious about paying off their homes a little further down the road in Baby Step 6.

To fill in the gaps, Baby Step 3 is going back and fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses. Baby Step 4 is investing 15 percent of your house-

on your rental property but still have a $3 million mortgage on your residence, you might go ahead and quickly knock out the rental property first.
