Villages point ways to aid Harvey victims Villages urge residents to verify the validity of organizations and websites to avoid donation scams As many look to provide aid for the victims of Hurricane Harvey, local officials help sort out the various avenues to make sure efforts are focused in the right direction.

The village of Romeoville urges residents to verify the validity of organizations and websites to avoid donation scams. Following are some organizations coordinating fundraising efforts: FEMA provides a resource page that includes a list of opportunities to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey, including ways to donate through trusted organizations and providing other assistance. Check out www.fema.gov/ hurricane-harvey.

The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD), is a coalition of the major voluntary organizations in the U.S. that have prioritized disaster-

related work. The organization’s website, www.nvoad.org, provides information for people looking to donate or volunteer.

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance and disaster relief in times of crisis, is seeking donations to help victims of Harvey.

The organization is accepting donations via phone at 1-800RED CROSS or text HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation for those in need. Donations can also be made via www.redcross.org/ donate/hurricane-harvey.

Locally, the Romeoville Humane Society is seeking foster families for pets displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Check out www. romeovillehumanesociety.com for more information on fostering pets.

After receiving an overwhelming number of inquiries from citizens and corporations who would like to help, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will accept tax deductible flood relief donations. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation.

Methods to Donate: Online Credit Card Donations: Visit www.ghcf. org. Online credit card donations will be assessed a small fee, typically 3%, by the credit card companies. Donors have the option of increasing their credit card donations to cover this fee. The village of Bolingbrook encourages people to check websites for the most up to-date infor-

mation as disaster recovery needs can change quickly, and also cautions on avoiding scams.

Best practices dictate that donating cash to a reputable disaster relief organization is the best way to assist immediately following a disaster and to make donations to trusted organizations.

Agencies are reporting not to donate via Facebook or Twitter and to donate instead to the American Red Cross. It also can be more daunting for relief organizations to handle material items and toiletries.

Agencies prepare for fallout of DACA program ‘We knew this day would come, it was a matter of time ...’

With circumstances unknown, local agencies are preparing to provide information for those affected by the termination of DACA, the program that allows children of those who entered the United States illegally to remain.

DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was created on June 15, 2012, as a program that allows qualifying people to work legally in the United States without being deported.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, announced Tuesday that DACA, will be phased out and be terminated by March 6, 2018, impacting 800,000 young immigrants who came to the United States as children, 42,000 of them who reside in Illinois.

Local Bolingbrook agency Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project sent a statement denouncing “the decision made by the administration, and urges congress to find a permanent solution, that does not further criminalize the parents of DACA recipients and other undocumented people.”

SSIP also is calling on local leadership and the widespread communities of Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Woodridge, and sur-

rounding suburbs to issue statements of support and protection for immigrant youth that will be directly impacted both immediately and consequently.

“We knew this day would come, it was a matter of time. It is a very tough reality to admit, though, said SSIP’s Director of Organizing, Elizabeth Cervantes. “SSIP, however, is committed to the continued advocacy, education and civic engagement of undocumented youth and families in the suburbs. The decision will not halt our efforts, because we learned how to fight, we learned how to win, and that’s something that no one can take away from us.”

Congressman Bill Foster also issued a statement regarding President Trump’s decision to end the DACA program.

“I strongly condemn any attempt to end this program and make DREAMers feel unsafe. The United States is the only home many of these young people have ever known and their presence has made our country stronger,” Foster said. “DREAMers have also had a positive economic impact in the United States. Reports suggest that they add $460 billion to our national GDP. It’s clear that the President fails to appreciate the important contributions these Americans make to our country’s rich diversity

and economic prosperity.”

According to Foster, in 2012, the Obama administration established the DACA program to allow individuals who came to the United States as undocumented minors remain in the United States. Since the program launched, an estimated 788,000 received work permits.

An estimated 1.7 million people are eligible to benefit from this program.

In the next month, SSIP will be hosting open informational sessions on the decision and a DACA renewal workshop for those in the window before Oct. 5. The 52nd Annual Pathways Parade 2017 kicks off at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 10, where onlookers can enjoy the parade’s theme, “It’s a Small World.”

Nearly 100 community organizations and clubs will participate in the event.

The parade route begins at Bolingbrook High School, travels east on Lily Cache, north on Canterbury and ends at Town Center, 375 W. Briarcliff Road where the Path-Fest will be held.

Food and entertainment will be featured including, ARRA, one of the Chicago-area’s largest drawing classic rock cover bands, performing the biggest hits by the biggest bands such

as Journey, Boston, Kansas, Rush, Bon Jovi, Styx, Van Halen, Toto, Aerosmith, Triumph and Foreigner.

BARS, the Bolingbrook Amateur Radio Society will also be on hand at the event.

Members of BARS use their experience with electronics and communications techniques to provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cell phone or the Internet.

with a work permit is generally fine until the permit expires or if the government requires the return of the permit. If the government requires that you return your work permit, the ICIRR states that individuals do not have to inform their employer and the employer does not have the right to ask if DACA has been terminated or the right to dismiss anyone.

The ICIRR also notes that a valid Social Security number is valid for a lifetime, which can be used for for education, banking, housing and other purposes. However, the Social Security number contains a condition in which a valid work permit is required to be used for employment purposes.

In Illinois, immigrants can obtain regular driver’s licenses if they can provide a Social Security number and are currently eligible for one. The ICIRR states as long as your work permit is valid, you will be eligible for a Social Security number and therefore eligible for a regular license. Under the new Illinois laws that went into effect in 2016 and 2017, anyone applying for an initial regular driver’s license now must provide proof of immigration status.

If your work permit expires or ends, you can apply for a Temporary Visiting Driver License (TVDL), which will be valid for three years.

TVDLs are visually distinct from regular licenses and are not valid for identification purposes. For

The ICIRR states that many DACA beneficiaries may be eligible for other immigration options to obtain a work permit or even a green card and advises talking to an immigration service provider to understand your legal options and see if you might be eligible for another immigration benefit. The ICIRR also recommends not opening the door unless agents have an order signed by a judge; do not sign any documents you do not understand; remain silent; record and report the incident: Call the Family Support Hotline at 855-HELP-MYFAMILY (855-435-7693).

ICIRR has produced awareness cards in six languages (English, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Arabic and Urdu). These cards are available at the ICIRR office and online at www. icirr.org/content/documents/kyr_ card_2017.pdf.

Is air conditioning your only cooling option because rolling down the windows would cause a tornado of flying papers? If so, it’s time to clean out and organize your car.

CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER Using a couple of boxes and a trash bag, pull everything out of your car.

Use one box for things that will go back into your car, the other for things that belong elsewhere, and the trash bag for everything else.

USE CONTAINERS AS APPROPRIATE When putting things back in your car, you can use visor and back-of-theseat organizers for sunglasses, CD’s, pens, etc., and a mesh laundry bag over the back seat for a variety of other items. Keep store gift certificates and coupons in an envelope in your door pocket or glove compartment so you’ll have them with you when you need them and won’t be sorry they’re at home on the refrigerator. Store items

you don’t need as frequently in a milk crate or a box in your trunk. Keep valuables out of view so curious eyes can’t see them and be tempted to break into your car. And be sure to have a designated container (other than the seat or floor) to stash trash.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Keep an umbrella under the passenger seat, and a flashlight and extra batteries in the door pocket or glove compartment. Consider keeping an emergency supply of water and snacks in your car proper so you can access them in case you’re stranded in an accident and can’t get to the trunk. Besides tire-changing supplies (including safety flares), your trunk can house jumper cables, a snow brush and shovel & extra cold-weather clothes (I keep these in the trunk year-round so I don’t have to remember to load them in November), a blanket, first aid kit, sunscreen, and bug spray.

MAKE IT EASY TO GET ITEMS TO AND FROM YOUR CAR I keep a collapsible mesh bag with handles in my car for depositing items that need to go into the house. When I arrive home, it’s easy to grab the bag and carry it around the house as I put things away. I also put things to go into my car in this bag (library books to be returned, dry cleaning, etc.) to easily transport these items out to the car.

Bolingbrook junior tailback Anthony Williams was the horse the Raiders rode in an impressive 28-20 road win over St. Charles North.

Williams scored three times on the night carrying the ball 31 times for 130 yards and caught a nifty play action pass from his quarterback senior Anthony Vespo for a 32-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter for a 21-10 lead.

The Raiders would never trail in their 28-20 victory over North.

St. Charles fans were treated to a new turf football field and despite the loss, a very good football game as it would turn out.

Bolingbrook’s defensive line was sensational forcing North

Stars’ senior quarterback Mike Hohensee (15 of 33 passing 239 yards 1 TD, 1 INT) to scramble much of the game after being sacked seven times in the game by the Raider pressure.

“Their defensive line was big and quick” said Hohensee after the loss. We just couldn’t get into a rhythm but I think we gave them a good run anyway.”

Vespo kept his team balanced behind Williams throwing 11 completions on 18 attempts for 232-yards with a pair of scores.

Perhaps the only blemish on the night for the Raiders came early in the second quarter when a punt snap flew over their punter and was covered by North at the Bolingbrook 4-yard line which led to a St. Charles touchdown two plays later.

Hyland, who was also the Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, averaged 16.3 kills and 7.5 digsper-match, while hitting .359 (65 kills, 18 errors, 131 total attacks) to help Flyers to four victories at the Hawai’i Challenge. Her most impressive performance was a double-double of 23 kills and 18 digs in a five-set win over No. 3 Nebraska Kearney on Saturday (Sept. 2). “(Elizabeth) played as strong as she finished last season,” Lewis head women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. “She is an offensive power and her passion truly shows in her play.”

Lewis’ strong play also helped skyrocket the Flyers from No. 8 to No. 3 in the latest AVCA Division II Coaches Poll, released on Monday (Sept. 4). It is the highest ranking in Lewis history.

“I’m very proud and impressed by this team’s fortitude,” Smith said. “Like any (other) team we have work to do, but an honor like this certainly makes us all smile.”

The No. 8 Lewis University women’s volleyball team left Hawai’i with an unblemished record as the Flyers dropped host Hawai’i Pacific, 25-15, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14 in the final match of the Hawai’i Challenge on Sunday (Sept. 3) evening.

Lewis redshirt senior right side Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./ Nerinx Hall) topped the Flyers with 14 kills, while junior outside Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield Central) pitched in 12 kills in the victory.

Fantasy football column to run all season Who to sit and who to start predictions online each Wednesday As the NFL opens uop another year, that means only one thing to all the sports nerds like me out – fantasy football!

I have been playing fantasy for the nearly 25 years and put a lot of time and effort into the strategy that makes up the game. With this time comes wins – of the three leagues I am in, I am currently a back-to-back champion in two of them. The one I have only been a part of for two years (yeah, they want to kick me out already) and the other am part of a two-man team that has won four titles in six years.

This year I am going to share some my fantasy football knowledge with Voyager Media readersn at www.buglenewspapers.com.

Each Wednesday, I will post a new weekly list of players I would start and ones I would stay away from. This column will be an online staple, but may pop up in print from time to time. Here are my picks for week 1.

QUARTERBACK START - KIRK COUSINSREDSKINS Cousins was a surprise to many last season when he passed for nearly 5,000 yards and 25 touchdowns.

He lost a big weapon in DeSean Jackson, but has a healthy Jordan Reed (so far) and Terrelle Pryor, who put up solid numbers a year ago in Cleveland.

Cousins is playing on a franchise tag this season, so he is on a prove-it-and-get-paid, one year deal - All the motivation for him to come out on fire against the Eagles.

SIT - MARCUS MARIOTA TITANS I am a fan and I had him high on my board of mid-round QBs when I was drafting, but after preseason game No. against the Bears, I lowered him a few spots.

I still think Mariota will be better than OK this year with Delanie Walker and Rishard Matthews

back and the additions of Eric Decker and rookie Corey Davis – but he did struggle against a Bears pass rush front that is nothing like what he will see from Kahlil Mack and the Raiders.

If you have other options in week 1, use them – but if it is Mariota or hitting the waiver wire for Tom Savage, Mike Glennon or Brian Hoyer – then stick with Mariota and hope he makes it out alive.

RUNNING BACK START - JACQUIZZ RODGERS BUCCANEERS If you drafted him – play him.

My hope is that you took him after round 10 and that he is a Flex option for you and not a pure RB1, but if you have Ezekiel Elliott or a rookie runner that you just want to see one regular season game with before riding him, then Rodgers is your guy.

Doug Martin is suspended for the first three games of the season and even if he gets his job back fully when he returns, you have three solid weeks of a talented runner who can catch the ball out of the backfield.

There are conflicting reports all over the place if Martin will even get his job back when he returns from the suspension – even more of a reason to motivate Rodgers into playing his best in week one.

SIT - ADRIAN PETERSON SAINTS Yeah, I know – its Monday Night Football and the once revered runner returns to face his old team.

In a Hollywood story he may rip off 200 yards and 3 scores, but this ain’t Hollywood. Not only is AP facing one of the top defenses in the NFL, he is still in a pass-happy offense and will share carries with Mark Ingram, the starter last season in New Orleans

WIDE RECIEVER START - MARTAVIUS BRYANTSTEELERS Bryant returns to the Steelers

and the NFL after being suspended for a season and right away gets a Cleveland Browns team that just cut a Pro Bowl corner back in Joe Haden.

Not to be lost here is that Haden signed in Pittsburgh and I am sure is sharing coverage secrets with his new squad. In only 21 career games, Bryant has 14 TDs. He is a big WR at 6-foot-4 and should get single coverage all the time as long as Antonio Brown stays healthy. Big Ben is still a solid NFL QB and adding another arrow to his quiver is only going to help that offense.

SIT - CHRIS HOGAN PATRIOTS I know – Tom Brady is throwing the ball and the Kansas City defense isn’t exactly the ’85 Bears, but slow the roll just a bit.

Yes, Julian Edelman is hurt and someone has to take his place.

Hogan seems like the guy – but is he? Will it be Danny Amendola?

Will the Pats go downfield this year and use the speed of Brandin Cooks? Or will they just feature the plethora of pass-catching running backs for the short-yardage throws? Oh, and let’s not forget Gronk is back in the mix.

With so many questions to be answered, I would wait on New England pass catchers if you can and see how it plays out.

TIGHT END START - MARTELLUS BENNETT - PACKERS The former Bear and most recently Patriot TE has landed in a good spot in Green Bay. The Packers has a running game that consists of a converted wide receiver starting in the backfield.

What does that ultimately mean? The Packers will again be

a pass heavy team.

Jordy Nelson will get his catches and rack up his numbers as he always does – but Aaron Rodgers needs to be able to spread the ball around and his new TE is just the guy to help and could be a guy that nears averaging a TD a week.

SIT - JACK DOYLE - COLTS I am fan of Doyle and think he will have a productive season when all is said and done – but let’s not forget it looks like he has Scott Tolzien throwing him the ball right now.

Doyle had only five grabs for 25 yards and no TDs in the pre-

season, so it’s not like he and Tolzien have found some magic that makes him a must play. Even if by some miracle Luck is back for the opener, you are going to have a quarterback that has yet to practice, let alone play in a game.

Wait until Luck is back and healthy or until Tolzien proves Doyle is a prime target for him.

• Since you probably only should have drafted one kicker and one defense – just play who you have.

1783 map donated to Isle a la Cache Museum Map enthusiast Joe Kubal of Naperville recently donated a 1783 French map of Canada and the Great Lakes area to the Forest Preserve’s Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville.

The map shows the region where French fur traders were active in the 18th century, which is a topic celebrated at the museum

with its fur trader motif and exhibits.

Kubal said his donation was prompted by his wife’s desire to remodel the couple’s dining room, where the prized map had hung for many years. Kubal said he was more than willing to part with the map once he got the idea to donate it to the museum.

“It’s a somewhat rare, good quality map,” he said. “And it does show a lot of the things around the Chicago area associated with early pioneer settlers and explorers.

This is one of my favorite maps. It has a lot of historic value.”

Kubal, who is a member of the

Chicago Map Society, started collecting maps 30 years ago when he met George Ritzlin, owner of Evanston-based Antique Maps and Prints. At first, Kubal collected smaller less expensive maps. But ultimately, he decided to upgrade and buy fewer maps of higher quality, including the one he donated to the Forest Preserve District.

The hand-colored map is an updated version of a drawing originally created in 1703 by French cartographer Guillaume De L’Isle, Ritzlin said in an email.

“It went through a number of editions,” he wrote. “J. Dezauche

issued a revised version in 1783 which used the name ‘Etats Unis” (United States) for the recently independent former British colonies.”

Ritzlin added that De L’Isle was considered one of the finest mapmakers of his era because he was very skilled in evaluating information that came to him from explorers and others who had visited far away lands.

“This was at a time when much of the world was little known,” Ritzlin added. “He was fortunate to have many sources on our region as the French controlled much of the northeastern North America.

Reports came back from missionaries, traders, governmental officials and travelers to the area.”

According to the Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps Inc. website, the 1783 map is one of the first to use the name “United States” after the American Revolution and the first to show the city of Detroit. Some of the information on the original 1703 map came from explorer Louis Jolliet, and the map also is notable for its “great improvements” of its depiction of the five Great Lakes and “excellent detail” on the sources of the Mississippi River, according to the website.

Husband needs plan for down time Baby Step 3 is not a fill-in-the-gap measure for income you already know won’t be there DEAR DAVE, My husband opened his own commercial painting business in May. He knows he will have about three months in the year where he’s making little to no income.

We’ve gotten $1,000 set aside for our Baby Step 1 beginner’s emergency fund, but because of that down period he would like to skip paying off all our debt except for the house, which is Baby Step 2, and move to Baby Step 3 and put an emergency fund aside. I can understand his thinking, but I wanted your thoughts on the idea.

MELODY DEAR MELODY, Baby Step 3 is not a fill-in-thegap measure for income you already know won’t be there. Baby Step 3 is an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, and the scenario he’s talking about is not an emergency. He knows it’s coming, so it is not an emergency.

I think he needs to re-work his business model. This guy needs something to do during those three months, so he doesn’t drop off to no income. Also, if you’re going to set some money aside for a down time, that would not be Baby Step 3. It would be a line in the budget where you’re setting some money aside, because you know a problem’s coming.

If something happens around the same time every year it becomes predicable, and it’s not an emergency. So, it’s not really a mat-

ter of the order of the Baby Steps.

You budget for this down time, or even smarter, figure out a plan for his time during these months, based on his skill set, that will earn some money!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I’m debt-free except for my home, and I’m about to start Baby Step 3 of your plan. I will be back on active duty in the Navy soon, and they provide certain types of relief funds for its members depending on where you’re based and other factors. With this in mind, how should I approach Baby Step 3?

BRAD DEAR BRAD, For Baby Step 3, I tell folks to have three to six months of expenses set aside in an emergency fund. You have incredibly stable employment, so you would probably be okay on the three-month side of that equation. And you wouldn’t need quite as much emergency fund money as if you were a straight commission salesman.

However, my guess is you’ll still

have emergencies that will be your responsibility to cover. Everyone needs an emergency fund, Brad.

But in your situation, you’ll probably be okay with one that’s closer to three months of expenses rather than six months of expenses.
