Community partners together to host 5K Heart Haven Hustle set for oct. 16 By laura Katauskas Bugle staff @BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com

Focused on the same goal of improving the health and wellness of its residents, a variety of Bolingbrook organizations and businesses are coming together to support a certified 5k to benefit charity.

AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook & PT Solutions Physical Therapy, the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce, the Bolingbrook Park District, and The Promenade Bolingbrook have partnered with Heart Haven OutReach (H2O) to present a USATF certified 5K Run/ Walk (3.1 mile). The event, The Heart Haven Hustle, named after the original organizers, will take place at the Promenade on Sunday, Oct. 16, with an 8 a.m. run start just outside Bar Louie.

In is its fifth year, event organizers have been reaching out to all sectors of the community, including smaller organizations who can use the Heart Haven Hustle as a means to raise funds for their own organization. Through the “Charity of Choice” program, a group can sign up on-line (www. hearthavenhustle.org) to run as a fundraiser, and start taking pledges to support their non-profit organization, team, or school of choice.

“I am a firm believer in community collaboration and trying to reduce the duplication of services that several non-profits offer, said Michael Carpanzano, Regional Director of Sales, PT Solutions Physical Therapy. “This central event can now serve as a hub for the community to rally with and for non-profits to rally behind and use as their fall fundraiser. Instead of a community having 25 separate race events, each of which have separate overhead costs for these non-profits, we can simply collaborate with the Community Charity Challenge 5K.” Group organizers agree that the collaboration is a way to promote good health and exercise while combining community resources, bringing greater value while enhancing partnerships.

The time and talent needed to organize a successful event can be both cumbersome and expensive.

Sharing The Heart Haven Hustle as a run/walk community venue will hopefully help groups address this concern. While the Heart Haven Hustle began as a fundraiser for Heart Haven OutReach and we will continue to solicit funds through this event to support our organization, we want to partner and share this event with other organizations in the community.”

heart haven outReach, known as h2o, is 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides support and mentoring to local high school age teens in Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

This year, the race is designated as a Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) 2016 Emerging Race and includes a run and a walk route geared toward both beginning and competitive runners.

The course passes through the Promenade, down Janes Avenue, and through the neighborhoods before returning to the mall.

Neighborhood residents are being encouraged to come out and cheer the runners on as they wind through the neighborhoods; race guides, cheerleaders, and members of the Bolingbrook Amateur Radio Society (BARS) will be on hand to direct runners through the course.

“We have a world-class com-

munity,” said Carpanzano. “I’m honored to call Bolingbrook home and thrilled that we come together for great community causes, especially those that support youth.

We live in a world where tensions run very high and we are often separated in silo’s. Let’s continue to focus on building relationships, collaborating, and having fun together ... maybe even while burning some calories at a 5K race.”

To avoid lines and insure participation, pre-registration is strongly encouraged. The regular rate is $30 per participant, available online through October 13. Race day registration will open at 6:30 a.m. at The Promenade Bolingbrook, but the price for race day registra-

tion will increase to $35.

Registration includes a moisture wicking long sleeve shirt, goodie bag, pre- and post-race refreshments, and finisher ribbons.

Music, continuous raffles, and an awards ceremony recognizing the top finishers with awards and prizes, scheduled to take place at 9 a.m., are planned for the event.

WBGL’s very own Weez Stockton will be the events DJ. In addition, an optional post-race buffet breakfast will take place at Bar Louie, available to participants and their supporters for $10 per person.

Playing hopscotch on the blacktop is fun, but swinging through the air just doesn’t compare. For years, John R. Tibbott Elementary school students headed to the parking lot for recess, but that is about to change.

Thanks to a grant and the help of more than 200 volunteers, the Bolingbrook school will have its own playground come Oct. 6 when the community comes together to build it in a day.

Principal Ana Wilson has been campaigning for a playground for as along as she can remember.

Calling it a dream come true, after all the planning and prep, the school will have a fully operational playground.

Washington, DC-based KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to making sure all kids get the kind of active and balanced play they need to thrive, is the catalyst in the project. Funding will be provided by Chicago-area Target stores, the Valley View School District Facilities Department and do-

nations raised through the Tibbott Playground Funding Effort.

“It has been a long journey,” said Wilson. “We are extremely grateful to be able to provide our students with a safe and engaging play space they can call their own.

We are looking forward to using it to build physical skills as well as to help encourage social skills which will build a stronger sense of community among our students.”

Representatives from KaBOOM! visited Tibbott earlier this year for a unique design process, assisting Tibbott students to design their “dream playground, later matching that dream with reality.

The new playground will be located in back of the school between the new bus drop-off lanes and the school’s edible garden and is expected to showcase a Quattro seesaw and a slither slide.

“It’s been a long journey and it took a community effort. We’ve had a lot of parent support, a lot of family support, a lot of staff support. And the school district has been terrific through all this,” Wilson said. “But that’s what KaBOOM is all about…bringing the community together to build a safe play space for students.”

Volunteers are expected to assemble the playground from start to finish in less than six hours.

Target, who is bringing nearly 150 volunteers to help with the project, supports KaBOOM!, partnering with the group as part of its ongoing efforts to help make wellness more affordable, accessible and inspirational for its team members, guests and communities.

Tibbott serves as one of Valley View School District’s bilingual centers and serves approximately 600 children.

Retired athletic director still following the Spartans ‘i’m not really into politics,” he said.

“But this area is truly my area. i’ve been here all my life’ Unlike many people who head to warmer climates when they retire, former Romeoville High School Athletic Director Jim Boudouris has made it a point to stick around and is keeping close tabs on how Spartan sports perform.

“I get the newspaper every day because I want to keep up with local things and keep up on the kids,” said Boudouris who retired as RHS Assistant Principal for Athletics and Activities a little over a year ago. “Do I miss my job? Sure. I loved my job. I loved the interaction with people. I was truly blessed to be able to go to work and not feel like it was work.”

But, he says, the time was right to hang it up, particularly since his wife, longtime Valley View School

District 365U teacher Lisa Boudouris, had retired two years earlier.

Boudouris admits he has thought about starting a new career perhaps working as an insurance agent with his son, J.T., who was elected to the VVSD School Board last spring. But for now he is content to spend much of his time volunteering (he is a member of the Romeoville Economic Development Commission), watching his beloved Cubs play at Wrigley Field, and doing some traveling.

Oh yes…and he also has decided to dip his toes into politics, running for a seat on the Will County Board from the 3rd District which includes sizeable portions

of Romeoville and Bolingbrook as well as other areas in northwest Will County.

“I’m not really into politics,” he said. “But this area is truly my area.

I’ve been here all my life. I grew up in Romeoville and remember Weber Road when it was in the middle of farms and cornfields. I want to give something back to my community.”

Boudouris is proud of the fact that both of his married children have chosen to live in Romeoville.

“No, we’re not going anywhere,” he said. “In fact you can expect to see me at a lot more Romeoville High School games now. I didn’t do a lot of that last year because I didn’t want to be in anybody’s way or make anyone uncomfortable.”

But don’t expect him to be at any RHS competitions if the Cubs make it to the World Series.

“I’ll be at Wrigley for sure,” he said. “Retirement is great.”

oct. 14 3K to benefit Jane addams anti-bullying program Jane Addams Middle School will host its 4th annual Trick-orTrot 3K run/walk on Friday evening, Oct. 14.

Pre-registration for the event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is available for $15 for VVSD students and $20 for adults. Eventday registration is $25. A Trickor-Trot T-shirt is included with

every registration.

Participants and attendees are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes.

Money raised will be used to help fund the Jane Addams antibullying program.

The financial assistance will be given again this year as a credit on the water bill. The aggregate amount of relief to be provided to residents this year is approximately $114,000.

During the six-year period, the initiative has returned more than $1.1 million to Romeoville residents.

Drug court receives $300,000 federal grant offices of the state’s attorney, county executive obtained grant A $300,000 federal grant recently awarded to the Will County drug court will be used to expand the program’s services and combat the region’s growing heroin epidemic, county officials announced last week.

The grant, which provides $100,000 annually for the next three years, was awarded through the U.S. Department of Justice’s 2016 Adult Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program. It was obtained through a cooperative effort by the offices of the state’s attorney and the county executive.

The county will use the additional funding to add a case manager in the drug court program

and expand counseling, treatment and therapy services for defendants who are in the program, according to a Will County press release.

The federal grant will also allow the drug court to increase its capacity by roughly 50 percent and bring an additional 35 to 40 defendants into the program.

The drug court currently has the capacity to handle about 75 non-violent defendants who are attempting to overcome drug addiction and avoid felony criminal convictions.

Over the past 16 years, the drug court has graduated more than 350 individuals, according to the county.

The Heroin Crisis Act makes

drug court participation more widely available to defendants by limiting the ability of prosecutors to decline participants unless they have been charged with the most serious drug dealing offenses. The new law also mandates expanding drug court participation to defendants with more extensive criminal histories as well as those who have been charged with alcohol-related offenses, included drunken driving. Many of these defendants would have been denied participation under the prior Will County Drug Court protocol.

So far in 2016, the Will County Coroner’s Office has reported 50 heroin-related overdose deaths, putting the county on pace to

surpass its record-high 53 heroin-related deaths recorded in 2012 and 2015.

In 2011, Will County Executive Larry Walsh brought together local leaders to form Will County HELPS (Heroin Education Leads to Preventative Solutions) to address the problem.

“We now know addiction is a medical illness and the crimes people commit in order to support a drug habit are often part of the illness,” Walsh said. “The drug court program has already helped hundreds of people turn their lives around and become productive members of the community. These additional dollars will enable [the program] to help even more people.”

Gains and Losses obesity rates fall in a few states but still far higher than 1990 By trudy lieBerman rUraL HeaLTH NeWS SerVICe Is the message that the nation is getting too fat beginning to sink in?

The answer is “yes but,” says the Trust for America’s Health, a nonprofit, non-partisan group that aims to protect the health of communities and make disease prevention a national priority. And a study of healthcare quality and quantity across the nation suggests some reasons why things are not improving uniformly.

Obesity is a disease, and for the last 13 years the Trust and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have monitored obesity rates in the country, focusing on the proportion of a state’s population that is obese. The study designates someone as obese whose body mass index (a measure based on height and weight) is 30 or higher.

This year’s results show that after a decade in which every state’s obese population rose, a few states have finally experienced a decrease.

“We’re seeing the rates plateau albeit at a very high level,” says Richard Hamburg, the interim president of the Trust.

Although rates have dropped in Montana, Minnesota, New York, and Ohio, even those decreased rates are still high. Twenty-six percent of adults in Minnesota were still considered obese, and nearly 30 percent were in Ohio. Even in the states with the lowest rates - Colorado, California, Utah, Montana, Hawaii and Massachusetts - rates remain between 20 and 25 percent.

Twenty-two of the 25 states with the highest adult obesity rates are in the South and Midwest, including Kansas and Kentucky, both of which experienced an increase.

What happened?

Hamburg explained that many societal changes have conspired to increase obesity rates. Children have less opportunity for physical activities; parents are no longer comfortable sending their kids out to play and telling them to come home by dark.

Other reasons?

Sedentary activities like computer games have replaced physical activity.

Many schools no longer offer physical education, and are not always open for physical activity after the school day ends.

More kids arrive at school via car or bus. In 1969, 89 percent of kids walked or rode their bikes to school. By 2009, the number had dropped to 35 percent.

Eating habits are different, too, with families eating more often in restaurants, including fast food establishments, and consuming more added sugars and fats. Many families eat at McDonalds or Burger King a few times a week, but even if they cooked at home, they might not be eating “healthy” because they don’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Hamburg told me 30 million people don’t have easy access to a supermarket; many residents in dense urban areas have to walk or take public transportation more than a mile to get more than a “convenience store” selection. Many in rural areas must drive 10 miles or more.

Powerful marketing from the food

industry is also a culprit, beckoning consumers to eat pizza, overstuffed tacos, and sodas without regard for the effect on their weight or health.

I usually don’t pay much attention to state rankings from various groups.

Most people aren’t going to move to another state just because it ranks better on whatever is being measured. But this time I did because as the obesity report came out, a personal finance website, WalletHub, announced its latest report “2016’s States with the Best & Worst Health Care.” And I was struck by a possible connection.

What did WalletHub have to say about those states in the South and Midwest with high numbers of people who are obese? Were they getting routine examinations, and dental care?

Were physicians accepting Medicare?

Were there adequate hospital beds particularly, in rural areas where many hospitals have closed?

Now I didn’t attempt to do a scientific correlation, and there may be many reasons why a state’s healthcare system ranks high or low on the WalletHub site. But for me, the take-away from these studies is that communities must offer not only treatment for health problems relating to obesity but also ways to prevent the underlying cause in the first place.

Communities must have not just enough and appropriate medical facilities and personnel but also programs to encourage better eating habits and more physical activity.

With a 25-13, 25-16, 25-27, 2513 win over Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Maryville University last Saturday at Romeoville’s Neil Carey Arena the Lewis University women’s volleyball team extended its record on the season to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in GLVC. The Flyers are currently ranked No. 15 in the nation in NCAA Division II and have gotten off to the fast start with the help of a trio of Voyager Media area products.

Lewis features senior Carolyn Nojiri, a defensive specialist/libero from Downers Grove North. She is joined by Downers Grove native and Montini product Joyce Balash, a junior middle hitter and sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Hyland from Plainfield Central.

The tight knit group this season is what the players say has added to the talent to help them in the early goings.

“Everyone always says their team is like sisters, but this team really proves that we are like family,” Balash said. “One person could not be successful without everyone behind them and supporting them and to have 15 other people behind

you gives you confidence.”

That support and confidence was important early on when the Flyers faced four teams that were ranked in the top five in the nation including current No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul (10-0).

“It has helped our mental toughness and cohesiveness as a team,” said Hyland. “We are really strong off the court and playing those really good teams helped us bring the chemistry on the court. Playing really tough competition is never easy in the moment, but after the fact, it has only made us stronger.”

That hard-fought play on the court translates to hard work in practice.

“We saw really good competition early on so that set us in a good position,” Nojiri said.

“With this team, everyone works their butts off every day in practice and we push each other. We have competition at each position and when we scrimmage, we always push each other.”

As the Flyers push each other it also showed the players what they are capable of.

“We got to see some of the top five teams in the first few weeks and it really opened our eyes to the top teams out there,” Balash said. “Knowing that we

That potential could take Lewis far this season.

“We are hoping to go to the Elite 8 and go from there,” Hyland said. “I believe we can win a national championship, but the goal to start with is elite eight. It is a huge goal that we think about every day.”

Lewis coach Lorelee Smith believes the Flyers have the talent to reach their goals.

“It you ask me when we play our best, I would say we have a shot at making the NCAA elite eight or final four, but there are times when we are not playing so well and we just have to eliminate those,” she said. “The second weekend I knew would be tough. The first weekend, we got lucky and a few top ranked teams came here and we came out with a lot of adrenaline and played really, really clean and it gave this team a lot of confidence of what they can do by the end of the year. Now, it is a process of making sure we con-

tinue to improve.”

As the Flyers improve and get better, the local players said it is nice to be able to do that with the support of family and friends in the stands.

“My favorite thing is that my parents don’t usually miss a game,” Balash said. “They are willing to travel, but it is nice that when we are home, it is right down the road. My family support means everything to me.”

“There were some of the girls from my high school team were here today and to look up and see familiar faces is awesome,” Hyland said.

For Nojiri, her parents are not only in the stands for every volleyball game, but also every softball game, as she plays for the Lewis softball team as well.

“It is awesome. I love being able to look in the stands and see my parents there. They travel everywhere, but they are only 20 minutes down the road here,” she said. “During the fall, I will play as much with softball as I can. I will do double practices if that’s what it takes. I love it. I could not choose a sport – I have to play both sports. Both of the teams are very supportive. I had softball players here tonight – I feed off that support.”

The players will return home to Romeoville Oct. 4 with a 7 p.m. match against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Flyer tennis duo claimed 2nd straight regional doubles title Lewis University’s Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/ Dozsa Gyorgy) and Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) earned their second-straight ITA Women’s Tennis Midwest Regional Doubles Championship with the 8-2 win over Indianapolis’ Florence Renard and Hanna Volikova.

This is also the second year that Andrejszki and Mindiyarova has defeated UIndy in the finals, as they claimed the 8-4 win over Renard and Stephanie Hirsch in 2015.

With the victory, Andrejszki and Mindiyarova advance to the ITA Oracle Cup in Surprise, Arizona from October 13-16 at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.

Andrejszki fell short in her bid for a singles title, as Hirsch claimed the 6-4, 6-4 win in the Semifinal round.

Lewis returns to action on October 7th, as the Flyers head to Kalamazoo, Mich., to participate in Western Michigan’s Bronco Invitational.

women’S Soccer Despite its best efforts, the Lewis University women’s soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal deficit, as Southern Indiana held on for the 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Flyers at Strassweg Field on Sunday (Sept. 25) afternoon.

After falling behind 2-0, Lewis redshirt senior forward Jessica Chavez (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) cut USI’s lead in half with her fourth goal of the season at the 49:35 mark.

Southern Indiana, however, added an insurance goal from sophomore defender Oliva Wilde in the 63rd minute to secure the victory for the Screaming Eagles.

With the win, Southern Indiana improves to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in GLVC action, while the visiting Flyers are now 4-4-1 on the campaign and 2-3-1 in conference play.

Brooks upsets Jane Addams in regional Brooks Middle School competed in the IESA baseball sectionals after surprising top-seeded Jane Addams Middle School 5-2 in the regional final Monday afternoon.

Joshua Cosme led Brooks (96) with three hits and three RBIs, while Hunter Hryck and Martin Boland added a pair of hits each.

Hrysck hurled six innings scattering nine Mustangs hits. Cosme got the save.

After Cosme knocked in a pair of Bulldogs runs with a Texas leaguer to right center in the first inning, Addams (7-3) scored twice in the bottom of the first on singles by Kyle Buckley and Alex Tran, an error and Anthony Tykane’s single to right field. But the Mustangs never scored again, leaving 10 runners on base in the contest.

A third inning double by Hrycyk and an RBI single up the middle

by Cosme turned out to be the game-winning hit. Brooks added

single runs in the fifth on a Jacob Blim single to right and in the sixth on David Underdonk’s single to left.

Both squads turned in outstanding defensive plays including a key fourth inning moment when Brooks’ Jayden Cummings fielded Andrew McElroy’s no-out single to right and hit relay man Boland who turned and threw out a sliding Jack Vodarka at the plate.

Bulldog shortstop Josiah McGee and Addams third baseman Dillon Hinojosa also made terrific plays in the field during the game.

Other members of Brooks’ sectional qualifiers include Dominic DeMichel, Zachary Baker, Dalan Lamberson, Anthony Miglieri, Damien Angeloni, Dylan Strzechowski, and Jon Carrera.

They are coached by Patrick Meginniss and Joe Bleers with assistance from Alex Hrycyk and Dylan Crouse.

Never get sold on old timeshare tricks I’ve made just about every financial mistake, except buying a timeshare dear dave, My wife and I recently sat through a timeshare pitch at my mom and dad’s community as a favor to them. We’re trying to get out of debt and take control of our money, so when the salesman said we could put the whole thing on a credit card, I told him about you and your plan. He then said that he used to be your personal financial advisor and had sold you three timeshares in the past. Is this true, or are timeshares a bad idea?

Jeremy dear Jeremy, A timeshare salesman said he had been my personal financial advisor? Wow! It takes real guts and a bunch of dishonest nerve to spread that kind of crap around.

No, I’ve never in my life owned a timeshare. I’ve made just about every financial mistake known to man, except that one. I’ve also never made the mistake of having a timeshare salesman as my financial advisor. This sounds like the kind of guy who you know is lying if his lips are moving!

I’m really sorry if your mom and dad already hooked up with this bunch. Timeshares, even with honest salespeople, are just straight-up stupid. Never buy a timeshare! The customer dissatisfaction rate with those things is sky-high, and you’re pretty much stuck once you buy one. They’re almost impossible to sell, because you don’t really own anything.

You’ll both have to make lots of adjustments and get used to the new schedules and habits, likes and dislikes, that go along with marriage.

You need to spend that first year getting to know each other even better, and exploring and developing your relationship as husband and wife. Running out and buying stuff like curtains and furniture — or making major life decisions like

buying a house — can wait.

Devote the first year to deeper, more important things. In the process, make sure you’re on the same page emotionally and financially. Develop a plan to make your hopes and dreams come true, and start piling up a bunch of cash for the future. Then, a year or two down the road, you can start the house-hunting process.

There will still be great homes at good prices, plus you’ll both have a better idea of what you want for the future!

Joe Doti, director of admissions at the Salon Professional Academy in Shorewood, believes that looking good and feeling good should be synonymous.

To that end, the beauty school partnered with Feed My Starving Children to hold its second annual cut-a-thon event – a fundraising effort benefiting the Aurora-based charity.

“Every single [Salon Professional Academy] location got on board with all of this,” Doti said, explaining that individual franchises select a local charity to work with.

“We can donate to any charity that we want, and our charity is Feed My Starving Children.”

Last year’s event raised about $70,000, according to Doti. In doing so, the salon helped feed more

Sarai Guerrero, of Joliet, frequents the Shorewood salon regularly, and said she liked how it was getting the community involved and helping make a difference.

“I [actually] am getting a haircut today, so that’s part of it,” Guerrero said.

Jenna Lubash, a student hairstylist, said customers seem receptive to the cut-a-thon event. Lubash has been working at the salon for more than a year and said it’s nice

seeing everyone in the salon working with one goal in mind – fighting world hunger.

Joselyn Cruz has also worked at the salon as a student hairstylist for more than a year.

She said she loves the community support shown during the fundraiser.

“It’s a lot of fun,” she said.

Cut-a-thon fundraisers were held at all Salon Professional Academy locations across the country.

The Salon Professional Academy is a nationwide beauty school franchise.

Doti noted that the Shorewood salon gets a lot of walk-ins, which are perfect for the student stylists.

“It’s just come at your leisure and everyone gets a haircut,” he said of the fundraiser.

Doti said holding the event was a win-win for everyone.

“It’s a minimum $10 donation, so you’re looking at a $30 haircut for $10,” he said.
