What started out as a walk drawing a few hundred, has grown to nearly 12,000 individuals coming together to build immigrant power.

Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project celebrated the 7th annual Day of the Immigrant Sept. 23 at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center where families, residents, community organizations, local politicians, and

supporters traveling from throughout the Chicago area came together to celebrate the power of culture.

Joining SSIP in the celebration were emcees Vicente Serrano, Mariallen Magana-La Pecadora and Miguel Angel Sanchez. A family-fun event, the day included a resource fair, kids’ activities, live music, dance performances, beer garden, and ethnic food vendors.

Romeoville begins village-wide photo contest The Village of Romeoville is introducing a new photo contest to encourage residents to go around town and snap photos that follow monthly themes.

The “Picture This, Romeoville!” contest will have one winner each month who will have their photo displayed on romeoville.org as well as on the Village’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Winners will also receive a prize valued at $25 from a local business like Citgo, American Sale, Farm and Fleet, and more.

“We’re excited to see the creativity of our residents,” said Mayor John Noak.

“There are plenty of activities, buildings, and nature areas in Romeoville fit for photographing.”

Photos must be submitted via email by the last day of the month.

Valley View passes balanced budget District projects a year-end balance of 94 days cash-on-hand reserves

The Valley View Community Unit School District 365u will move forward with an overall budget of $286 million for the 2017-2018 school year, continuing its technology learning initiative while remaining financially stable.

According to Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi, the budget is balanced, using a small portion

of the district’s reserves to support some expenses not covered by revenue.

The lion’s share of the budget covers salaries and benefits, with a 3.6 percent increase in labor costs; salaries for the additional instructional technology coach positions and staff, including teachers, bus drivers and monitors for the expanded Early Childhood Center.

Grizaffi further pointed out expenditures to include the continuation of the district’s 1:1 technology initiative utilizing a lease-

purchase for Chromebooks and information technology solutions; a $2.4 million scheduled debt service payment; an increase budget for outside placement tuition to $410,000; the addition of $75,000

to replace three driver’s education cars; $68,000, representing 75 percent of the cost for crossing guards in Bolingbrook that were paid for by the village in the past.

The district’s budget shows operating funds at approximately $241 million, with the majority coming from local resources $193.1 million; state funding at $60.43 million; and total federal dollars at $18.55 million.

Grizaffi also reported that the district still does not definitively know what it will receive in terms of State funding.

For purposes of the budget, the district assumed just one change in General State Aid; incorporat-

ing an additional $1.6 million of GSA was modeled in the last available printout of the impact of SB 1947.

Similar to last year, the district projects a year-end balance of 94 days cash-on-hand reserves.

According to Grizaffi, the 90day State-recommended reserve threshold is the minimum balance which would allow the district to meet its obligations such as payroll and vendor payments on time.

The reserve keeps the district from having to consider short term borrowing options (TAWS), as well as provides a positive position to the bond rating agencies.

WILL COUNTY BOARD

Board speaker proposes hiring freeze Essential services, such as the Sunny Hill Nursing Home, would be exempt Will County Board Speaker Jim Moustis (R-Frankfort) has called for a countywide hiring freeze for the 2018 fiscal year.

His announcement was made in the wake of the recently passed state of Illinois budget which reduced funding for local governments. He has also asked county departments to hold the line on personnel hires for the remainder of this year’s fiscal budget.

“It would be financially prudent for the county to take steps now to compensate for expected funding cuts from the state,” Moustis said. “We have to plan accordingly and not outspend our revenues. I believe we can make our hiring choices more efficient without impacting any vital services to the people of Will County.”

Local governments across Illinois, such as Will County, will see less funding from the state of Illinois as it keeps a greater percentage of local sales tax receipts and decreases replacement tax allocations, local distribution funds, sales tax surcharges, and regional transit authority dollars.

Will County specifically will see $2.4 million less. Finally,

county health insurance premiums for employees are expected to rise by an estimated $2.3 million next year.

In total, Will County will have to make up for a $4.7 million reduction in revenue. The total county budget for the current fiscal year is $570 million.

“We will see less money next year, but nothing we can’t handle,” Moustis said. “I’m just asking the county executive and all other departments to plan ahead so they don’t get stuck in a tight spot next year.”

Along with a temporary hiring freeze, Moustis asked departments to not increase their budgets for personnel during the next fiscal year. Essential services, such as the Sunny Hill Nursing Home, would be exempt from the freeze. Individuals currently in the hiring process would also not be affected.

Board provides new option for proper disposal of worn U.S. flags

The Will County Board has installed a new flag retirement box on the first floor of the Will County Building.

The flag disposal box is the result of a partnership between the Board, the National Association of Counties, and the National Flag Foundation.

Residents who wish to dispose of a flag should fold it respectfully before placing it in the box.

The United States Flag Code prescribes flag etiquette — everything from flying it near other flags to instructions on how to raise and lower it. It says: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Members of the local Boy Scouts will be responsible for the proper disposal of the worn flags.

“This centrally-located dropoff provides convenience while respecting our national symbol,” says Will County Board Chair of Legislative Committee, Suzanne Hart (R-Naperville).

“The county is unified in helping our citizens to respect our great nation while disposing of old or worn out flags.”

Residents can find the flag disposal box at the Will County Building is at 302 N. Chicago Street, Joliet, on the first floor.

Board agrees to stoplight on Weber Road After hearing safety concerns from residents about traffic flow on Weber Road, the Will County Board has voted to support a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Weber Road and South Carillon Drive.

Weber Road is one of the busiest highways in the County and is slated for construction projects in 2018.

“Residents let us know that they have become concerned about traffic at the south Carillon community entrance on Weber Road,” said Mark Ferry (D-Plainfield), a representative of District 13 where the intersec-

tion is located. “Safety always comes first. I’m happy to report we could support a traffic signal in that location so our residents know we have their best interest. I will always be willing to take a stand for the safety of our Will County residents.”

Residents from the Carillon community previously met with board members Ferry and Tim Kraulidis (R-Joliet) about heavy traffic flow surrounding the busy entrance from South Carillon Drive to Weber Road.

Unlike a second entrance to Weber on North Carillon Drive, the south has no traffic signal.

Residents said they had a hard time safely turning left out of the exit.

“Weber Road will be undergoing significant changes over the next few years as construction begins to widen the highway,” said Kraulidis, also of District 13. “This was a perfect example of residents letting us know their concerns so we can best meet their needs as these projects are about to get underway.”

In conjunction with Romeoville and Bolingbrook, Will County has scheduled Weber Road to undergo widening and reconstruction projects beginning in 2018.

The project is expected to take up to two years.

B.J. Ward students open two fundraising fronts Since the school year started just over a month ago, the students at B.J. Ward Elementary School have been putting their energy into raising money for the American Cancer Society.

The money was raised through the BJW Walk-a-Thon, an effort led by Physical Education Teacher Luke Collins. The BJW Walk-AThon consisted of classrooms walking each day with a pedometer as part of their PE instruction. The class that walked for the furthest distance at the end of the event, which lasted several weeks, was rewarded with extra PE time. Students asked friends, family, and neighbors for donations to support their walk. The class that raised the most money was also rewarded with an extra day of PE. The final total for the B.J. Ward students was $1,541.51 which was presented to the American Cancer Society at a school assembly on Fri. Sept. 15.

But that’s just half the story. During the last couple of weeks, the devastation of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma prompted B.J. Ward 5th grade students to start collecting

money for Hurricane Relief. The students set a goal of $1,000 by Fri. Sept. 15 and began seeking commitments from friends, family, and teachers. (Several teachers reported that once you make a financial pledge to a B.J. Ward 5th grader, you had better deliver because they will remind you....often!) Last Friday, B.J. Ward 5th grade teacher Brandon Guernsey counted all the money raised and came up with a total of $940.22. Guernsey got permission from B.J. Ward Principal Ted Warpinski to add one more day of fundraising. The students made their goal, raising exactly $1,000.

So for those scoring at home, the students at B.J. Ward have raised $2,541.51 to help others since school started.

A reminder about student physical exams According to Illinois law, PreSchool, kindergarten, 6th grade, and 9th grade students must have completed physical examination forms turned into their school’s Nurse’s Office no later than Friday, October 13, 2017. Also, 12th grade students must show proof from a doctor that they have received at least one Meningococcal Vaccine

after the age of 16. If the above is not turned into the Nurse’s office, the student will be excluded from school beginning Monday, October 16, 2017 until the proper documentation is presented to your child’s school Nurse’s Office. Appointment cards for an examination to be performed in the future cannot be accepted. If you have any questions, contact the school nurse at the school your child attends.

For the Bolingbrook Tee-Ball Association, that response was a nobrainer: “We want to ensure all kids interested in baseball are aware of our league and have an opportunity to play,” said Board President Tyler Gallant.

Ran entirely by volunteers, this youth sports league provides introductory baseball skills to children ages four through eight. The modest registration fee includes a comfortable uniform, complementary pictures, and a sweet freezie pop at the end of each game.

For the league, the low cost is worth it to keep kids on the diamond and give them opportunity to be involved in team sports at an early age.

“It’s great for kids to have some-

thing to be a part of,” said Gallant, “In team sports, you learn teamwork, patience, and sportsmanship is a big thing. It’s important for us as individuals to still keep these things running so the kids that are interested can have the best possible experience we can possibly give them.”

As a league operating on a low budget, there aren’t too many affordable opportunities to advertise.

The color-changing water bottles provided through Give Your Brand a Hand are promised at the beginning of the season and will be sold in the concession stands.

When the kids bring these water bottles to the field with their bats and gloves, they will inadvertently help bring more attention to the league. Not to mention, these water bottles will always go with them to school or to any of their other extracurricular activities. Police remind about railroad safety Illinois has one of the biggest rail systems in the United States The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) is coordinating the fourth statewide Illinois Rail Safety Week, which runs from September 24 to 30, in partnership with the Union Pacific and CN Railroads, along with support from state, county, and local law enforcement agencies, railroads, schools, and various private sector agencies.

The ILACP is also pleased to announce that Operation Lifesaver has declared the same week as National Rail Safety Week, and the ILACP is proud to be part of the national effort.

The Plainfield Police Department wants to promote safety for both motorists and pedestrians around railroad tracks.

Illinois has one of the biggest rail systems in the United States.

According to the Illinois Commerce Commission: • Illinois has approximately 7,400 miles of railroad track, the second largest rail system of any state in the nation.

• Over 547 million tons of freight moves on rails within Illinois each year which is the most of any state in the nation.

• Chicago is the largest rail hub in the United States and third largest intermodal container/trailer port in the world, following only Singapore and Hong Kong.

At 10:19 a.m. on October 19 millions of people across the United States and around the globe will take a few minutes to practice three simple actions that could save their lives during a major earthquake.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and municipal and county emergency management agencies are encouraging Illinois residents to drop, cover, and hold on during The Great ShakeOut earthquake drill.

“Earthquakes occur without warning, so it’s important to know what to do as soon as you feel the earth shake,” said IEMA Director James K. Joseph.

“With two seismic zones in southern Illinois and residents who travel throughout the world, it’s important that everyone knows how to stay safe during an earthquake. The drill takes only a few minutes, but the lessons learned could save your life.”

The Great ShakeOut drill centers around the drop, cover, and hold on

actions: drop down to the ground, take cover under a table or other piece of heavy furniture, and then hold on until the shaking stops.

In October 2016, nearly 500,000 Illinoisans took part in the ShakeOut drill.

To date, more than 300,000 people in Illinois are registered for this year’s event.

Some of the most powerful earthquakes to ever occur in the United States happened in the winter of 181112 in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which reaches into southwestern Illinois. That series of earthquakes lasted for several months and shaking was felt as far away as the East Coast. A similar earthquake today could cause catastrophic damage in a region that is

much more developed and populated than in the early 1800s.

Schools, businesses, government agencies, families, and others can register to participate in the drill at www. shakeout.org/centralus.

Registered participants will receive additional information about the drill and earthquake preparedness.

Lack of goals scored has left Bolingbrook with a record below its true talent and ability

After a 1-1 tie this weekend with Andrew, Bolingbrook soccer coach Jamie Clemmons said the score was indicative of what the Raiders have been dealing with all season.

“We just can’t score goals,” Clemmons said. “We can’t seem to get more than one a game and we have lost four times 1-0 and we have two 1-1 ties. If we can put the ball away on a couple of occasions, we would be right there.

“We are 5-8-2 and we are way better than our record establishes that we are. Every loss except for one is a one goal loss, 1-0 or 2-1. The only bad loss we have is against Bradley, 5-3 and they are extremely good.”

The bright side of 1-0 losses is the defense is not allowing many

goals.

“Our defense is playing fantastic and we just can’t take advantage of the opportunity,” Clemmons said. “We just can’t put the ball away when it counts.

We don’t have that cut throat (approach) like I am burying this ball, instead if hoping it goes in.

You need to have that mentality.

“We are just that one touch or that one bounce away, that one execution away from winning 1-0 instead of losing 1-0.”

Clemmons knows it is not because of a lack of talent.

“We have guys that can score,” he said. “We only start three seniors and we have three sophomores in the starting lineup, so we are learning on the fly. Flyer Crowdfunding campaign underway The Lewis University Athletics Department - in conjunction with the Lewis University Office of Advancement - is proud to announce the Fourth Annual Flyer Friends And Family Crowdfunding Campaign.

The Athletics Department’s most successful fundraising campaign will run from September 25th to November 30th. To date, the campaign has raised close to $200,000 and saw a program best 800 donors contribute last year.

This campaign aims to support all Lewis student-athletes and help them maintain the resources necessary to once again be one of the top Division II athletic programs in the nation. In the past four seasons, Lewis has finished in the Top 20 percent of the Learfield Directors’ Cup - which is a program that measures overall athletic excellence.

The Flyers are equally as impressive in the classroom. The Athletics

Department has a Student-Athlete Academic Success Rate of 91% and collectively, all 20 Flyer teams combined for a cumulative gradepoint-average of 3.32 in 2016-17.

The Flyer Friends and Family Crowdfunding Campaign will help our 20 intercollegiate athletic teams raise funds for specific equipment, travel and training enhancements for their program.

No. 3 women’s volleyball team wins pair The No. 3 Lewis University women’s volleyball team, led by double-doubles from junior outside hitter Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and redshirt junior setter Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./ Menomonee Falls), recorded a .430 (49 kills, 6 errors, 100 attacks) hitting percentage in the 25-22, 25-8, 25-21 Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep over the University of Indianapolis at the Ruth Lilly Center on Saturday (Sept.

23).

Hyland garnered 16 kills and 11 digs to go along with a .538 (162-26) hitting percentage, while Becker had a match-high 33 assists along with 10 digs.

The Flyers also received 11 kills from sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./ York). Lewis sophomore libero Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./ West Chicago) notched a matchhigh 14 digs.

Over the weekend Frederickson ran at the 8K Stegemoller Classic placing sixth with 24:46.0 beating his best time by 28 seconds.

“James has been putting in a huge amount of work and it’s starting to pay off.” Lewis head men’s cross country coach James Kearney said. “I’m proud of his efforts and excited to see where it will take him.”

Sheriff’s detectives arrested Daniel Czupryn, age 59 On September 20, Will County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Daniel Czupryn, age 59, of 2 Caribou Court in Bolingbrook on three counts of child pornography. Detectives first became aware of Czupryn last month after they received a tip from the Internet Crimes against Children Task Force. Detectives immediately began their investigation and found that Czupryn was involved in sharing child pornography through a social media site.

After a search of his computer and cell phones, Czupryn was brought in for questioning where he made statements implicating himself.

Daniel Czupryn was booked into the Adult Detention Facility and was charged with three counts of child pornography.

His bond was set at $100,000 (10% to apply).

Czupryn is currently a part-time Romeoville Fireman, works as a GI tech at DuPage Medical Center in Oakbrook, and works part time at Meier’s in Bolingbrook.

Glasgow responds to ruling in Peterson Case State’s Attorney Glasgow statement on Illinois Supreme Court ruling in Drew Peterson Case The statement below may be attributed to Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow: “Today’s ruling by the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously affirming the conviction of Drew Peterson for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, is the ultimate vindication of my decision to pursue a prosecution that had been criticized initially by many legal professionals and those in the media.

“Today’s ruling completely affirms my lawful use of relevant and probative hearsay statements against Drew Peterson at his murder trial. Peterson thought the statements and threats he made had died with Kathleen Savio and had vanished with his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. He never anticipated that I would utilize the constitutionally sound concept of forfeiture by wrongdoing to allow Kathleen to testify from the grave against her murderer, and enable Stacy to bolster her testimony. This legal principle allows prosecutors to

use relevant and probative hearsay statements at trial against defendants who kill witnesses to keep them from testifying.

“The Illinois Supreme Court today not only affirmed the use of this principle as applied in the Peterson case, but it identified additional avenues that had already been laid out by the U.S. Supreme Court for prosecutors to use in future cases.

“Today’s ruling is a victory for the families of Kathleen Savio and Stacy Peterson against a notorious murderer who always felt he could act outside and above the law. It also is a watershed moment for police and prosecutors battling criminals who would twist the law to serve their nefarious purposes by killing the very witnesses who would help bring them to justice.”
