New bill to increase accessibility for dual-credit classes Senate Bill 2838 will look to make the cost of college more affordable

In an effort to make the cost of college more affordable, State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant has initiated a law that will increase accessibility for dual-credit classes in the state of Illinois.

“After listening to parents and realizing dual-credit was becoming more and more of an option, we needed to solidify the relationship from high schools and junior colleges,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

Senate Bill 2838 that was passed by the Senate and House with bi-

partisan support requires a public university or community college to collaborate with local high schools to grant dual credit to a student who completes an accredited course.

Bertino-Tarrant said that not only will this law help the students in the long run, but it will also have a domino effect for more possible future laws to similarly take place.

“I think we just repeatedly hear how high the cost is for a college education and the significant debt kids are graduating with,” BertinoTarrant said. “If we can build this relationship between high schools and community colleges we can

make it a little easier on the kids.”

Dual credit, which allows students to gain credit for post secondary coursework while they are still in high school, is set up to help parents as well in the long run.

“This law is going to help parents financially,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “The community college image has completely changed from what it used to be and this is a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Past research has proven that students who participated in dualcredit opportunities often has lead to positive academic outcomes, especially for students from lowincome backgrounds and first generation college students.

This new bill that won’t be in full effect until Jan. 1, 2019, has already

shown sides of optimism from citizens.

“The reaction I’ve seen has been very positive so far,” BertinoTarrant said. “We had the training commission, administrators and teachers all at the conversations and its been a collaboration give and take, everyone at the table recognizes the importance of dual credit.”

Under the current bipartisan law, students are eligible to receive up to a total of 60 hours of dual credit, and Bertino-Tarrant said the fact community colleges offer these classes for a lot lower cost than universities is a huge for the kids.

“We recognize the cost of college education is very high,” BertinoTarrant said. “Community colleges

offer these gen ed classes at a significantly lower cost, that’s one of the greatest benefit of this bill, getting two years under your belt at community college will pay off in the long run.”

Even though this bill was generally passed with not a lot of issues, Bertino-Tarrant said that there were some regulations that the board had to follow in order to actively pursue to get this done the way they wanted it to be done.

“Community colleges are restricted to a high learning commission, so they can’t break policy at all,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “We had to follow pretty strict rules, so getting them to mesh that was the biggest road block we would hit, but we had a lot of creative minds and we all came together in the end.”

Prison event earns $136K for future needs Tours, future events on tap at historic site

Just weeks after the first large scale event at Joliet’s historic prison, the numbers are in, showing the rehab project at the prison has triggered both local interest and the possibility for future profits.

The city’s prison committee met on Monday, Sept 10, getting updates on the future of the old Illinois State Penitentiary, which hosted its first community get together on Aug. 25.

Deputy City Manager and Economic Development Director Steve Jones, along with members of the Joliet Area Historical Society, updated the committee on the results of sales at the Great Joliet Prison Break-In. The total expenses for the event reached $66,115, with gross income from sponsorships, ticket sales, food and beverage sales, and donations at $202,698. That puts the total revenue from the event at $136,582.

“Since we started this whole process, we’ve always in a position of, what are we going to do.

Here is what we did do. We’re actually doing some wonderful things out there and implementation is well underway,” Jones told the committee, adding that the event attracted between 3,000 and 3,500 visitors, with lines for viewing of the cell block and segregation unit lasting up to an hour all the way through 9 p.m. during the event.

“Our whole suspicion was that people would just want to go see this place. Clearly, it’s there. We had the kind of turnout and the kind of enthusiasm that we all expected,” Jones said. “We did this for the fun factor of brining the community into the prison, but clearly, the fun factor is part of this because we need to find ways with the restoration and the money that is being spent out there is being sustained.”

Jones added that many of the visitors were local, which means there’s potential to earn more cash if they can generate interest outside the region and into the city of Chicago.

Now, the prison is poised to open to future events.

“This thing will become more of a routine, and hopefully we could replicate this as a fundraiser every year,” Jones said. “People drive by this place for a decade not know-

ing what they could see, and now they can see. To me that’s exciting, because we have so much more potential.”

The site will host a disc golf tournament on Oct. 13 to benefit the historical society’s funds for the site.

The prison was built in 1858 and closed in 2002 when the last of its inmates and most staff were moved to nearby Statesville. After that, the prison fell into a state disrepair, becoming a hot spot for vandals and even suffering through two fires.

Renovations on the outside of the site began in March of 2009, with the revitalization of the parking lot into a public park.

Members of the committee lauded the efforts of staff and volunteers to renovate the site and increase public interest.

“The finances are just great,” said Councilwoman Bettye Gavin.

“I was really shocked when I saw the numbers. That is awesome, you guys threw a good party.”

The Joliet Area Historical Museum began the first prison tours on the Tuesday immediately after the Saturday event.

The tours are offered three times per week and have drawn interest from schools and Route 66 visitor groups.

Bolingbrook United announces election candidates Candidates will start to host events ahead of April 2, 2019 elections Bolingbrook United looks towards the 2019 municipal election, on the evening of September 12, 2018, the group announced its intended slate of candidates for a range of local governmental bodies.

Over the coming weeks and months Bolingbrook United’s candidates will start gathering petitions for signatures to appear on the ballot and hosting various campaign events between now and election day, April 2, 2019.

CANDIDATES FOR VILLAGE TRUSTEE: Ajaz Gill – a 30-year resident of Bolingbrook, Ajaz was born in Pakistan where he met his wife Rizwana and started his own business. Ajaz moved to Bolingbrook in 1989 and started Midwest Draperies in 1990. Ajaz and his wife are the parents of three sons, all who received their education within the Valley View 365U School System.

He leads his life by his core values of hard work, respect, and loyalty. He is an active member in the local Mosque and considered a leader by the congregation.

Ajaz believes that the skills that he has learned as a business owner and as a leader at the Mosque, will allow him to work on issues key to Bolingbrook and what is best for its residents.

Jaime Olson – is a 12-year resident of Bolingbrook, the mother to two children and is married to Bolingbrook attorney Joe Giamanco. Jaime moved to Bolingbrook in 2006 to lay down roots and start a family. Jaime graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in history (with honors) and political science and received her Juris Doctor from DePaul University College of Law in 2002. Jaime has worked as an administrative law judge, attorney, a manager and a specialist in labor and employee relations. Jaime currently serves as the Labor Relations Officer for the General Services Administration in Chicago. Since moving to Bolingbrook, Jaime has been active in the community, serving as a Girl Scout leader, a soccer

coach with the Bolingbrook Soccer club, the vice president of the Illinois Democratic Women of Will County, and member of the marketing committee for local charity Power Connection. Jaime has also been involved in and assisted with PTA, Bolingbrook Pride, and her neighborhood Home Owners Association and provided free legal assistance to our community during Lawyers in the Library inaugural event.

She is also the founder and primary contributor to the Facebook group “Bolingbrook Events”. Jaime wants to help make our community better and ensure that our children are not saddled with the debt created by the current administration. Jaime believes her desire to help others as well as her work and civic experience have provided her with the knowledge and experience necessary to be a good Trustee.

Terri Ransom – A 19-year resident of Bolingbrook, Terri has more than 25 years of Information Technology experience in the financial industry, most recently in Cyber Security. She is the newly appointed DuPage Township Democrat’s Precinct Captain for Precinct 31, current Board member of the Black History Awareness Club, council member for the Naperville Boys and Girls Club, and a volunteer for Moms Demand Action. She is also the former business owner of Computertots and Computer Explorers, past treasurer of Panther Sports Club, and a former Girl Scout troop leader. Terri is married to Michael, and they have two children — a college freshman and a recent college graduate. Terri is running for Village Trustee for the same reasons she ran in 2017, to stand up and fight for Bolingbrook and deliver prosperity for all by returning the power back to the residents.

CANDIDATES FOR VALLEY VIEW 365U SCHOOL BOARD: Dr. Sandra Carlson – Sandra, a 23-year resident of Bolingbrook, was born in Chicago and has

lived in five different communities in Illinois. She moved to Bolingbrook when her husband Paul accepted the call to be the pastor at New Life Lutheran Church. The Carlson’s brought three sons and a dog with them to Bolingbrook. The family has grown and now includes three daughters-in-law and two grandchildren, AJ and Hope. Sandra is a licensed clinical professional counselor. She earned a master’s degree in counseling from Northern Illinois University in 1994. She earned her Ed.D in counseling in 2010 from NIU. Since the year 2000 Sandra has operated a counseling practice in Bolingbrook and has been privileged to serve the community ever since. Sandra’s love of chil-

dren makes her a passionate advocate for quality education and as a mental health counselor she understands the challenges our children face in the 21st century.

She believes that schools are crucial to the health and wellbeing of children, and the communities they live in. Sandra wants to serve on the school board as she believes that education saves lives, as it saved hers.

Charlotte Droogan – a 54-year resident of Bolingbrook, Charlotte is essentially a founding citizen as she’s lived here longer than Bolingbrook has even existed as a legal entity. Charlotte has a master’s in counseling and is a retired third grade teacher who served the families of the Valley View School District for thirty years.

After retirement, she continued the job she loved as a substitute teacher for another ten years. Her love for kids and the people who teach them inspired Charlotte to run for the school board. Her background in teaching and as a longtime resident of the community make her uniquely quali-

fied for the position. Charlotte wants to enhance the programs we already have for our students and brings to the table new ideas about how to further enrich the lives of children through education.

Mustafa Syed – a 15-year resident of Bolingbrook, Mustafa has been married for 25 years and has two children. He has a master’s in business administration and bachelor’s in commerce. He has more than 15 years of experience in Information Technology (IT) in software development, testing and implementation. Presently working as IT consultant and Project Manager. Mustafa has extensively traveled world and is an avid follower of world politics. His interest includes reading gardening, interiors, sports and community involvement.

He believes that schools have a very strong and direct impact every resident of Bolingbrook village, including those without children as school ratings effect home values, not just the lives of our children. Mustafa wants to work towards improving Valley View 365U’s overall ratings to benefit not only our children but also taxpayers and homeowners.

FOUNTAINDALE LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Otis Gatlin – is a 13-year resident of Bolingbrook grew up in Chicago and graduated from Lane Tech College Prep. Otis has three kids, two daughters and one son. Otis works for Chase Bank as a mortgage underwriter and attended college at Wilbur Wright College. His hobbies include reading, traveling and watching the NBA and NFL. Otis is running for Library Board because he wants to make the Library more transparent and accessible to all Bolingbrook citizens.

Ryan Harter – is an 8-year resident of Bolingbrook. Ryan and his wife, Sara, moved to Bolingbrook in 2011; their son, Milo, was born in 2017. Ryan is part of a small mobile app business and enjoys sharing his expertise with the community by supporting local tech events.

He’s always enjoyed being a part of the community and wants to do his part to contribute to the

wonderful resource that is Fountaindale Library. Until moving to Bolingbrook Ryan wasn’t fully aware of everything that a library could be. He believes that the library is more than a collection of books and movies, it serves an important role as a place to gather, share ideas, and learn. Because of this, as a trustee, Ryan’s goal is to raise awareness for our incredible library and everything it has to offer.

Deb Savage – is a 12-year resident of Bolingbrook with a bachelor’s and master’s in nursing and administration. Currently she serves the community as an elected Will Co Regional School Board Trustee. She is a member of Chamberlain University’s national library and information resources committee and is the former head of the library committee on the Addison campus.

Deb wants more residents in Bolingbrook to know all of the terrific resources the library has and how to access them. She wants to expand library resources, services, and events; and to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used wisely and that library decisions are evidence-based in the best interest for all Bolingbrook residents.

PARK DISTRICT BOARD Saud Gazanfer – is a 15-year resident of Bolingbrook, is married to Subuhi Humera, a physician at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, and has two children.

A self-described techie, entrepreneur, environmentalist, and coffee lover, Saud is currently employed as a Senior Software Engineer. Saud is running for Park District Board as he wants to modernize the existing park district infrastructure as well as promote fiscal responsibility by cutting the losses from loss generating programs. He wants to market the facilities aggressively by increasing the social media footprint to generate business and resident usage as well as reaching out to more communities with the park district facilities to ensure maximum participation of residents. In addition Saud wants to encourage and promote more family and senior citizen programs and special programs for physically challenged residents.

Illinois’ long romance with trains endures Railroads made Chicago, stealing commerce from steamboat hubs like St. Louis, but it’s a love-hate relationship in the suburbs and Chicago today

BY MARNI PYKE OF THE DAILY HERALD Trains brought Abraham Lincoln’s body home to Illinois, transported southern blacks escaping Jim Crow laws to Chicago, and now carry a labor force of thousands between the suburbs and downtown Chicago daily.

Freight, passenger and commuter trains pass through the Chicago area at the rate of 1,300 a day, Illinois Department of Transportation says, and rail lines fan out in every direction.

“People in Illinois are as intimately tied to railroading as anywhere in the country,” DePaul University transportation professor Joseph Schwieterman said. “Millions live close to busy rail lines, use commuter or intercity passenger trains, or cross busy sets of tracks every day, giving them a strong psychological connection to railroads.”

But being the rail hub of the nation also has its downside: Meager funding for commuter rail, crossing delays, and freight gridlock are among the challenges facing the state in the 21st century.

The first train to appear in the Chicago metro region was a Galena & Chicago Union Railroad steam engine dubbed the “Pioneer” in 1848, according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago.

One of its first destinations was the settlement of Elmhurst, foreshadowing a regional commuter rail service under Metra that made 78.6 million passenger trips in 2017.

“Our legacy suburbs developed along the railroads. In many respects they owe the initial growth to the railroads,” railroad historian and Metra Chairman Norm Carlson said.

Prior to railroads, “shipping was the only way to move bulk commodities,” Carlson explained. “‘Interior’ delivery was limited to what the horse or mule

could carry or pull.”

Initially, Midwestern railroads were built to link the nation’s interior with waterways, like the Mississippi River, and St. Louis was pegged as the gateway to the West. Chicago gained traction “in large measure to the access to Lake Michigan,” Carlson said.

Railroads began sprouting like dandelions to feed growing demands.

“From moving crops to market to moving raw materials in and finished products out, the railroads connect the economic activity of the state,” Carlson said.

Schwieterman noted “everyone knows that railroads are a huge part of Chicago’s history, but many don’t fully appreciate that other places, including Decatur, Galesburg, Effingham and Rock Island, were rail junctions of enormous importance, as well.”

As of 2018, the Chicago region absorbs almost 500 freight trains daily or 25 percent of traffic in the United States.

But outdated infrastructure where railway tracks intersect or cross busy roads mean trains can spend as much

time in Chicago as it takes to reach either coast. Efforts to untangle the rail spaghetti — expediting trains and improving safety — will cost $4.4 billion and are about 40 percent complete.

Both Metra and Amtrak are suffering from lackluster funding amid demands for better service from riders.

Yet, despite the budget drought for commuter rail, Illinois’ high-speed rail project to begin service between Chicago and Springfield with speeds of 110 mph is expected to finish this year.

“Chicago remains the workhorse of our country’s railroad industry,” Schwieterman said. “That keeps rail lines in our state unusually vibrant and busy.”

On Friday September 14, the undefeated and No. 2 ranked school in Illinois, the Vikings of Homewood-Flossmoor (4-0, 2-0), invaded ‘The Brook Armed with 1,505 pounds of offensive lineman and a 5-foot11, 190 pound, battering ram, named Leon Tanna, the Vikings rolled past Bolingbrook 29-0, in Friday’s Southwest Suburban Conference-showdown.

Tanna simply ran over, the vaunted, Raider defense as he rushed for 253 yards on 30 carries and scored three Viking touchdowns.

Meet the H-F Vikings offensive line. Erik White (6-3, 355), Jarod Thornton (6-0, 295), Michael Ford (6-2, 260), Denzel Bryant (6-2, 290) and Martin Harper III (6-2, 305). 1,505 pounds of of-

fensive line.

The H-F defense, pitched their second straight SWSC shutout by totally shutting down the Raider offense.

Raider senior tailback, Quentin Pringle, who entered tonight’s game, second in the area with 461 yards rushing. Pringle’s eight touchdowns on the season, were the best in the area.

Pringle rushed for 20 yards on 11 carries.

Anthony Williams Jr, faired only slightly better, with 39 yards and eight carries. Williams hauled in four passes for 40 yards, from Raider quarterback Devyn Suggs (6-for-16, 46 yards, INT), in the waning minutes, against the Viking reserves.

Preuss tabbed as GLVC Player of Week The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Sept.

17 that Lewis University junior outside hitter Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) has been selected as the Baden/GLVC Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending September 16th.

This is the first time that Preuss has won the offensive player of the week award and second time overall.

She won the defensive player of the week award last season.

Preuss played a key role in helping the fifth ranked Flyers

pick up three conference wins to extend their winning streak to a season-high six matches.

She averaged 4.1 kills per set and finished the week with a hitting percentage of .337.

Preuss began the week with a match-high 12 kills in the sweep against Missouri-St. Louis with seven of those coming in the third set.

She had an attack percentage of .667 in that final set.

Preuss followed it up recording a career-high 23 kills in the four set win over Bellarmine last Friday. She had 11 kills against

zero errors in the first two sets and then had eight kills alone in the fourth set.

Preuss also registered two near-double-doubles with nine digs in all three matches.

She also added one assist, three service aces and five block assists.

TENNIS The Lewis women’s tennis team competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional in Allendale, Mich., this past weekend.

The Flyers had four com-

petitors compete in the singles competition and two teams in the doubles competition.

Tereza Pilzova (Prague, Czech Republic) playing in the “A” singles draw won her opening match defeating Davenport’s Bruna Ralheta 6-0 and 6-4 in the round of 64.

Pilzova then lost her second match to Michigan Tech’s Iovna Gorgioski 6-1 and 7-5 in the second round.

In doubles action, Pilzova and Sredojevic lost to MissouriSt. Louis’s Salome Bleuler and Marina Prediger 8-4 in the first round of the “A” doubles bracket.

The duo bounced back in the consolation bracket defeating Southern Indiana’s Lauren Hambrock and Lauryn Thompson by the score of 8-3 but was eliminated in the consolation quarters by Hillsdale’s Katie Bell and Corinne Prost 9-7.

Reisch and Davis, competing in the “B” doubles bracket won their opening match against Maryville’s team of Bascunana and Ashley Dowden 8-4.

They were then defeated in their second match of the day against Grand Valley’s Livia Christman and Liv Hanover 8-5.

The Flyers return to action on October 5th in the Northwestern Wildcat Invite in Evanston.

Slammers one win from league title EDITOR’S NOTE: Game five of the series was rained out on Monday and as of press time, was scheduled for Tuesday. Check in at www.buglenewspapers.com for updates.

The Joliet Slammers lost game 4 of the Frontier League Championship Series against the Washington Wild Things 2-1 Saturday night to tie up the best-of-five at two games each.

The Slammers scored in the second inning with an RBI double from Brian Parreira.

Corey Kimber threw 6 scoreless innings.

A game earlier, the Slammers scored five runs in the third inning with two outs to take game three 5-3.

Slammers tallied four-straight hits to plate all five of their runs in game three.

Justin Garcia singled home a run before Ridge Hoopii-Haslam plated two with a base hit. Trenton Hill ended up with the gamewinning hit, as he singled home Hoopii-Haslam to make it 4-0 and subsequently scored on a double by shortstop Chaz Meadows.

Washington, who was hitless through three, received a twoout, full-count double from second baseman Carter McEachern that scored first baseman Reydel Medina to open the scoring for Washington. In the fifth, left fielder Roman Collins plated a run with a single and Medina doubled home a run to bring it to 5-3.

Nathan Antone earned the win in relief, fanning five in 3.1 innings including getting Hector Roa to fly out to center to end the fifth-inning threat with the tying run on second.

In game two, Joliet won 3-1 Dom Iero, Washington’s third baseman, came within feet of tying the game with a two-run home run in the ninth, but the ball was ultimately called foul before Iero struck out to end the game.

For the first two frames it seemed to be a pitching duel between Chase Cunningham and Joliet starter Scot Hoffman (0-1).

In the opener, Washington

The Slammers got on the board first on a Garcia home run off Thomas Dorminy, the Frontier League Pitcher of the Year.

Joliet’s starter Daren Osby was solid, but gave up a homer in the seventh Iero.

Later in the inning Kyle Pollock hit a two-run single up the middle that plated the differencemaking runs for the Wild Things.
