REMA teaches local Scouts tricks of trade More than 40 came out to learn and earn merit badges

The future innovators and naturists of America officially assembled in collaboration with the Romeoville Emergency Management Agency July 21.

More than 40 scouts from within the vicinity came to Romeoville Village Hall and learned many tricks of the trade in Boy Scouts.

Also, a variety of venerable merit badges were offered for particular skills and testing that was be-

ing offered.

“One of the badges is the emergency preparedness merit badge which is an Eagle Scout required merit badge,” Peter O’Connor said, an EMT member of the volunteer REMA force. “Another is the search and rescue which both of those have elements in them where the [Boy Scouts] have to understand and interact with people who do this everyday.”

REMA is a volunteer based agency that is responsible in assisting the Village of Romeoville with providing emergency ser-

vices in the occurrence of a catastrophe.

“We are a municipal agency who operates aside the police department and fire department while being trained in CPR as well as search and rescue,” O’Connor said.

Search and Rescue Emergency Preparedness are both merit badges with specific requirements that are difficult for a scout to accomplish without the support of organizations like REMA. The scouts had the pleasure of meeting and talking to someone who is hands on in REMA duty.

In addition, they also had the chance to be a part of the search

and troop mobilization.

REMA is part of the Will County Search and Rescue team, making them the quintessential group to help the scouts with the tasks.

A variety of different challenging tasks were presented to the young scouts, however, O’Connor recognized that even know it was demanding, the kids found enjoyment out of the day and learned a lot of valuable information.

“They were all very excited and we got some very positive feedback afterwards,” O’Connor said.

Another large part of the excursion was the use and understanding of the Incident Command System, which is comparable to the

control method that actual troops use in real life circumstances.

“We had a lot of different searches including a lost person search, evidence type search and then we had kids who were in command,” O’Connor said. “We rotated about every 45 minutes so each group had the opportunity to try out a new station while getting to use our radios for communication and also having to report in.”

With this being the first time ever that REMA held an event to help the scouts receive more credibility and merit badges, they foresee more events happening in the future to further gain experience and badges.

Village hopes weather cooperates for Jubilee Fest can draw more than 1,000 people when its nice out

With summer coming closer and closer to the end, Bolingbrook still has one more shot to enjoy the warm weather.

The 2018 Bolingbrook Jubilee Fest will be held August 17 through August 19.

The three-day weekend event that has been a yearly get-together for townies and tourists to rejoice before fall weather starts.

“This event is based in August but its still weather driven,” said Roger Claar, Mayor of Bolingbrook. “We’ve had well over a thousand people come when the weather is nice and permitting, so we’re hoping the weather cooperates.”

On Friday, the event will kickoff at 6 p.m. with food and beer, Jaycees Carnival, Jaycees Bingo and will be followed by the bands Heart to Heartbreaker, and the 16 Candles.

“The carnival will be running

at the front of the building, and then in the back is where we will have the entertainment and booths,” Claar said.

Even though this fest has turned into a large success to Claar, he knows that the grunt work and build up to this fest has been a long time coming.

“We’ve been doing this before I was mayor all the way back in the [1970’s],” Claar said. “In those days we used property anyway we could find it, but now we have the theatre.”

Transitioning to Saturday, the highly anticipated Summer Cruze Car Show will begin the festivities going from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. followed by the DJ Music Tent and the same activities as Friday provided.

The entertainment Saturday will include Neighbor John, The Band Sundance, Semple Band, The Chicago Experience and Jefferson Starship.

And all that is free.

“What’s nice about the Jubilee fest is that we don’t charge to get in like most places,” Claar said.

Claar said the Jubilee Fest tries to reach out to everybody to provide fun and entertainment that is suitable for all families.

“We try and show that the entertainment and atmosphere

we provide will be fun for everybody,” Claar said. “We have so many different bands and a variety of different music so we can appeal to all ages and all tastes.”

Wrapping up the annual Jubilee Fest on Sunday will dispense the most entertainment and activities.

A craft show, petting zoo and other family fun events will happen from noon through 6 p.m. setting up for the entertainment all night.

The King will come back to life as Nick Miller will be impersonating Elvis from 12 until 1:30 p.m., The Gold Coast Orchestra will be on from 2 until 3:30 p.m., Neverly Brothers will follow from 4 until 5:30 p.m., The Temptations 6 until 7:30 p.m. and the show will end with Ides of March from 8 until 10 p.m.

“We have about 20 volunteers that are commissioners who have spent hundreds of hours to put this event all together,” Claar said. “We really feel like everyone can enjoy this and we can all have a great time.”

The Jubilee Fest will be located at the Bolingbrook Town Center at 375 W. Briarcliff Road with additional parking at Brooks Middle School on 350 W. Blair Lane.

Lincoln the first president to make use of electronic mass media

BY STEVE TARTER Of the Journal Star of Peoria FDR used the radio, JFK scored on TV and Donald Trump expouses on Twitter. But the first president to make effective use of electronic communications was Abraham Lincoln.

His use of the telegraph, a tool used extensively during the Civil War, was one of the things that made Lincoln a unique communicator in tumultuous times.

“Two things set Lincoln apart in terms of his relationship with, and mastery of, the press,” said Harold Holzer, author of “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion,” published in 2015. “His language was simple and direct enough to make press reprints of his speeches especially compelling.

Second, he courted journalists from the beginning of his career.”

Holzer, director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College in New York City, added two more things: “(Lincoln) drafted editorials for his Whig and Republican newspapers and owned a newspaper, himself (as did his arch-rival, Stephen A. Douglas),” he said.

The newspaper that Lincoln purchased — in secret — was a pro-Republican, German-language paper published in Springfield just prior to the 1860 presidential election. “State legislators bought and distributed the paper in their districts,” said James Cornelius, curator of the Lincoln Collection at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in Springfield.

Cornelius said Lincoln’s rise in Illinois politics was marked by a close relationship with the press. “He was often in newspaper offices up and down the state in the 1830s and 1840s. Hanging around a newspaper office was a good place to shoot the breeze — and exchange information. He also wrote a lot that was published anonymously during that time,” he said.

William Herndon, Lincoln’s Springfield law partner, observed Lincoln’s relationship with the press firsthand.

Writing in 1886, he noted: “In common with other politicians, he never overlooked a newspaperman who had it in his power to say a good or bad thing of him. The press of that day was not so powerful an institution as now, but am-

bitious politicians courted the favor of a newspaperman with as much zeal as the same class of men have done in latter days.”

Herndon recalled Lincoln writing to an editor of a small country paper in southern Illinois. “’I have been reading your paper for three or four years and have paid you nothing for it,’ Lincoln wrote. He then encloses $10 and admonishes the editor with innocent complacency: ‘Put it into your pocket, saying nothing further about it,’” he said.

Not long after, Lincoln sent an article “on political matters” to the editor - who declined to publish the piece “because I long ago made it a rule to publish nothing as editorial matter not written by myself.”

“Although the laugh was on Lincoln, he enjoyed the joke heartily,” noted Herndon, recalling Lincoln saying, “That editor has a rather lofty but proper conception of true journalism.”

True journalism wasn’t always on display in the newspapers that reigned in Lincoln’s era. Editors were not shy about taking stands — or taking shots — at the nation’s leaders.

“Let’s just say that the openly, proudly partisan editors of the Lincoln era — Republicans like Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune and Democrats like Manton Marble of the New York World — would not be surprised at all that today’s media outlets, like Fox and MSNBC, display the same kind of doctrinaire leanings, except (the networks of the 21st century) don’t like to admit it,” said Holzer.

“Partisanship was deeply embedded in the American press tradition, from the days of John Adams onward,” he said.

In talking about the “reliability” of newspapers, Lincoln is said to have joked, “They lie and then they re-lie.”

But Lincoln also said, “No man, whether he be private citizen or President of the United States, can successfully carry on a controversy with a great newspaper, and escape destruction unless he owns a newspaper equally great, with a circulation of the same neighborhood.”

Lincoln learned how to deal with a divided press just as he did with a divided country. “Mr. Lincoln understood the power of the press. He well understood the excesses of the media, especially during his presidency. On the whole, he was thick-skinned, but he did object to

falsehoods, calumnies, libel and slander,” noted Lewis Lehrman, author of “Lincoln at Peoria: The Turning Point.”

“Lincoln’s genius with the press consisted primarily in presenting arguments for the Union cause and emancipation which prevailed over the common prejudices of the day. His fairmindedness, even in the face of vicious press attacks, was apparent to all — in the end, even to his enemies,” Lehrman said.

Holzer suggested that a lifetime of reading, writing and negotiating with newspapers laid the groundwork for what Lincoln was able to do as president: reach the public with letters to the editor spelling out his positions on some of the much-debated issues of the day.

“With his dramatic letters of 1862 and 1863, Lincoln in some ways wrote the big three New York editors out of the equation when it came to molding public opinion,” the historian noted.

Lincoln’s habit of maintaining close ties with members of the press as president didn’t always set well with members of his Cabinet. Writing in his diary in 1864, Navy Secretary Gideon Welles complained: “It is an infirmity of the President that he permits the little news mongers to come around him and be intimate, and in this he is encouraged by (Secretary of State William) Seward, who does the same, and even courts the corrupt and the vicious, which the President does not. He has great inquisitiveness. Likes to hear all the political gossip as much as Seward. But the President is honest, sincere and confiding — traits which are not so prominent in some by whom he is surrounded.”

When it came to using the technology of the day, Lincoln learned about sending messages by wire from Charles Tinker, a telegraph operator he met at the Tazewell House hotel in Pekin in 1857.

By the time he moved to Washington in 1860, Lincoln was well aware of how the telegraph operated and ways he could use it, stated Tom Wheeler, author of “Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War.” Lincoln not only installed a telegraph office at the White House but used that office as a situation room, allowing the president to communicate with field commanders in the nearest thing to real time that was available in the 1860s, noted Wheeler, adding that Lincoln sent out almost 1,000 telegrams during his time in the executive office.

GAME JCA and DePaul graduate Allie Quigley almost gave up, now she’s one of top players in the WNBA

To look at Allie Quigley’s career over the last two years, it is hard to believe the former Joliet Catholic Academy and DePaul University standout almost walked away from the WNBA. But she did.

After being drafted by Seattle with the 22nd pick in the 2008 draft, Quigley bounced around, playing in only 34 games total and was out of the league in 2012.

She got the call to play for the Chicago Sky, which was a call that had it come with a different area code may not have gone the same way.

“Chicago is my fifth team and when I got the call to come to Chicago, I only came because it is my hometown and it was one more shot,” Quigley said. “I was

tired of doing the journey thing and I did lose confidence in myself. I had thought about giving it up, but those days are behind me.”

Far behind.

In her first season with the Sky, Quigley matched the number of games played in her entire career to that point, and all she has done from there is go from winning the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year award in 2014 and 2015 to becoming an All-Star the past two seasons.

This year, Quigley is the Sky’s scoring leader, averaging 15.9 points per game. Quigley leads the WNBA in three-point percentage with all players averaging more than 3.5 attempts per game with a 43% clip and is second in the league with 2.3 triples made per game.

So, what is it that has sent the 32-year-old guard from anonymity to all-star?

“I think a combination of hard work and experience have caught up with each other,” Quigley said. “Going overseas and being more of a focal player over there in my early years and bringing that confidence here.

Then when the opportunity came, performing the way I can.”

Along with her role as a leader on the stat sheet, as a veteran on a young Sky team, Quigley finds herself as a leader in the locker room as well – a role she understands comes with responsibility.

“I have always been the player to look to the older player, now I have players looking at me, so I have to be more accountable for your actions and being more vocal and try and stay even keel and not get too high or too low,” she said.

A WBCA All-American at Joliet Catholic, Quigley finished up her DePaul career in 2008 as the third all-time leading scorer with 2,078 points and led the Blue Demons to four NCAA tournament appearances including a Sweet 16 berth in 2006 and Second Round spot in 2005.

She is third in career field goals and three-pointers, tied for third in free throw percentage, seventh in scoring average and assists and eighth in three-point percentage.

Lewis promotes London; hires Simleton Lewis University head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost announced July 31 that he’s promoted Marlon London to assistant coach and has hired Miles Simelton to be the graduate assistant coach. London served as a graduate assistant coach with the program the last two years while Simelton played two seasons for the Flyers.

“I am excited that Marlon has accepted the position of full-time assistant basketball coach,” Trost said. “He did a fantastic job while serving as a graduate assistant coach and is very deserving of this promotion.

“He has a great rapport with our players and does a fantastic job of mentoring them, both on and off the court.

Marlon is very connected in the Chicagoland area recruiting circles and he will be able to help recruit the type of players that have enabled us to be in the upper tier of teams in the GLVC.” In his two seasons as a graduate assistant the Flyers went 3427, been to back-to-back GLVC Tournaments and earned a spot in the GLVC Tournament final in 2017.

London brings 13-plus years of coaching experience to Trost’s staff.

He came to Lewis following a five-year stint as an assistant boys’ basketball coach for perennial local powerhouse St. Joseph’s High School in Westchester, Ill. While there, London played a key role in helping the Chargers to the 2015 IHSA Class 3A State Championship and saw seven of his student-athletes receive NCAA Division I scholarships.

One of those student-athletes was Portland Trail Blazers guard/ forward Evan Turner, who was drafted second by the Philadelphia 76ers.

London played two seasons at Kansas for Roy Williams (19982000) before transferring to DePaul for his final two seasons (2001-03). Following his graduation from DePaul (‘03), London

continued his playing career internationally with stops in Estonia, Spain and Mexico.

Simelton averaged 13.6 points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game and was a first team AllGLVC selection in 2016-17.

He helped lead Lewis to backto-back appearances in the GLVC Championship game including the GLVC title in 2016.

As a senior, Simelton led the team in scoring (15.0 ppg), threepointers made (56) and assists (3.2 apg).

He scored in double figures in 25 of 32 games and recorded eight straight games with at least 20 points. Simelton led the Flyers in scoring 13 times that season.

“Miles is a great addition to our basketball program,” Trost said.

“He has a great understanding of what our program is about and will be able to provide outstanding leadership to our players.

Miles is a very positive and upbeat person and will bring a lot of energy to our program.”

Finding responsible renters DEAR DAVE, I’m a landlord, and I own a few houses and duplexes around town. Recently, I made the mistake of renting to some tenants who were not respectful of my property. Do you have any tips for selecting good renters?

JOE DEAR JOE, In my experience, most landlords simply aren’t thorough enough with the screening process when it comes to potential tenants. It’s difficult to get to know someone — especially in this kind of situation — without spending some face-to-face time with them and digging into their backgrounds a little.

I have several rental properties, so here are a few tips that have served me well over the years.

Always require a big deposit up front. In addition, pull a credit bureau report on prospective renters. I also drive by the place they’re currently living to see how they take care of things. To me, this is a great indication of how responsible they are, and how they might treat my property. Finally, get proof they’ve regularly made past rental payments on time.
