Partnership provides dementia training for 1st responders Senior Star at Weber Place provides training to staff of Daley’s Ambulance Service By laura katauskas staff reporter

Recognizing the signs of someone with dementia can lead to a critical diagnosis in patient care and the earlier it is noted the better.

In a unique educational partnership, associates specializing in Alzheimer’s and dementia care from Senior Star at Weber Place have provided dementia training to the entire staff of the Daley’s Ambulance Service of Joliet, IL. Part of Senior Star’s mission as an industry expert on Alzheimer’s and dementia care, is its community outreach, taking the role of educator very seriously. This partnership came to be after an EMT from Daley’s, who provided non-emergency transport, underwent a training session about dementia.

Senior Star Executive Director Tom Johnsrud recalls an EMT commenting that often when a first responder is transporting someone from a private home to a facility, he or she may not know what or why something happened to an individual until they start recognizing the signs of dementia. All of a sudden, the padlock on the refrigerator door makes sense to the weight loss and paranoia that someone is stealing from them, common with Alzheimer patients.

“Recalling what was taught about dementia goes a long way to understanding what a resident is going through,” said Johnsrud.

Drew Peterson receives 40-year sentence in murder-for-hire case Will County state’s attorney helped secure Peterson’s 2012 murder conviction

By Bugle Staff Former Bolingbrook Police Officer Drew Peterson was sentenced to an additional 40 years in prison for attempting to hire someone to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

Glasgow released a statement regarding the sentence, saying that it sends a clear message that convicted criminals will be punished severely if they attempt to take revenge on prosecutors.

“While I was the target in this case, it is important to note that this crime is not about me,” Glasgow said. “It is about every state’s attorney and every assistant state’s attorney who takes on the important role of prosecuting criminals and protecting our citizens. This was not merely a threat to one prosecutor.

“It was an attack on our entire

criminal justice system by a notorious murderer who always felt he could act outside and above the law,” he added. “Prosecutors across our state must have assurances that they are safe once these criminal

enterprises are uncovered.”

Peterson received a 38-yearsentence after a conviction in 2012 for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Savio had been found dead in a bathtub in 2004.

The murder was first ruled an accident until his fourth wife Stacey Peterson went missing in 2007 and still remains missing.

Weber Road and I-55 construction to continue House bill approved allowing county to move forward on Weber Road reconstruction By laura katauskas staff reporter

Years in the making, a plan to facilitate traffic at Weber Road and Interstate 55 will stay on track as legislation to keep the project moving recently passed.

The new law will allow Will County to acquire land needed for reconstruction of the I-55 interchange and Weber Road corridor. Without it, it is estimated that the project could have been delayed for years.

State Sen. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, sponsored the initiative in the Senate and the move passed July 22. House Bill 1191 is effective immediately.

“By giving Will County the green light to move forward with construction, we will improve traffic congestion and address safety concerns at the I-55/Weber Road interchange,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “Local governments, as well as the Illinois Department of Transportation are working together to do what’s best for motorists.”

The law allows Will County to acquire 18 parcels of land for the purpose of reconstructing a portion of Weber Road between Normantown Road and 135th Street. According to Bertino-Tarrant, currently, the land has been largely undeveloped for commercial use adjoining strip malls and other commercial spaces near the highway. It does not include any

single-family residences, and the reconstruction plan would not remove any existing commercial parking facilities.

Discussion began in 2010 regarding the stretch of I-55 through Bolingbrook and Romeoville that is considered the busiest in Will County. The Weber Road interchange currently serves more than 40,000 vehicles per day.

The project will include widening Weber Road to six lanes between 119th and 135th streets and the building of a new “diverging diamond” interchange with I-55 that will allow motorists faster access to and from the interstate.

The nearly $70 million project is split between the Illinois Department of Transportation and Will County and ensuring that the two agencies work in tandem is

Romeoville receives upgraded bond rating Second agency in the last six months to upgrade village ratings

Favorable revenue framework, moderate fixed costs and long-term liability burden, and demonstrated financial resilience during economic downturns, results in Romeoville receiving an increased Bond Rating by Fitch Ratings.

On Friday, July 29, Fitch Ratings assigned an ‘AA’ rating to the Village of Romeoville’s general obligation bond rating. The upgrade to ‘AA’ for the Issuer Default Rating (IDR) and GO bonds also reflects application of Fitch’s revised criteria for U.S. state

and local governments, which was released this April. “This is good news for Romeoville.

Receiving a positive bond rating reflects the strength of our finances,” said Mayor John Noak.

Fitch Ratings also recognized that Romeoville budgets conservatively and has maintained strong reserves as protection against future cyclical revenue declines.

“Receiving yet another bond rating upgrade, even during these unstable times the State is facing, is evidence that Romeoville is in a strong financial position. e appreciate Fitch’s approach to focusing on our community’s strengths and not just on the State’s current fiscal condition,” Noak added.

Typically a community will use bonds for financing capital projects over a period of time.

Back-2-School Block Party set for Aug. 12 at The Promenade The Valley View Educational Enrichment Foundation and The Promenade Bolingbrook are co-sponsoring a Back-2-School Block Party from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12.

VVSD, teachers union strengthening collaborative partnership Valley View School District 365U is celebrating what Superintendent Dr. James Mitchem Jr. called the development of a “true partnership” with the union that represents VVSD educators and support personnel.

“We’re all in this together,” Mitchem told VVSD administrators this week during the annual back-to-school administration meeting. “We have a shared commitment to get away from us vs. them. Our goals are the same.”

“It’s all about shared problem solving and shared decision making,” added Rachel Dellamorte, Vice President of the Valley View Council, Illinois Federation of Teachers. “We are all working toward the same goal which is positive student learning outcomes.”

Mitchem lauded the “collaborative” atmosphere

that is developing in Valley View with assistance from the Teacher Union Reform Network (TURN), a group that is working with school districts around the country “to create a different paradigm between unions and administrators.”

“Not that we haven’t had a partnership with our union in the past, but I think as a result of our professional and personal relationship with the union this year, we have a great opportunity to develop a true collaborative partnership that supports the needs of the rank and file without having an impact on our expectations as they relate to supporting our kids’ growth and achievement,” Mitchem said.

Registration underway for ESL classes for VVSD parents Valley View School District 365U will again offer English-AsA-Second-Language classes for parents and guardians of VVSD students.

The classes will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from Sept. 6 to Nov. 22 at Bolingbrook High School.

Three different levels (basic,

dementia | from page 3 who are in a position to aid seniors. As more is known about age-related diseases, it becomes increasingly critical to understand the needs of dementia and how those differ from others in crisis.

“There are so many misdiagnosis that greater awareness of dementia is needed to recognize the early signs,” said Johnsrud. “This is what we do.

This is what we are all about and want to make sure we are doing all we can for the community. This is our obligation as an industry leader.”

In what began as a single training session, grew into a program that looked to train all first responders on staff. Senior Star believes this distinctive partnership has poised Daley’s to be better prepared as first responders to hundreds of older adults, especially those who have

Alzheimer’s or dementia.

“Participating in this training is vital and should be the national standard of care for all first responders,” said Randy Manns, a paramedic and director for Daley’s Ambulance. Manns, who has been with the company for 30 years, knows first hand the benefits of this training because his father was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s.

“It was like unlocking the key to what those who have dementia are experiencing,” added Laura Daley, marketing manager and granddaughter of founder John Daley, Jr. “Our entire staff is very proud to have completed this training and we have already seen evidence of its value on calls where our paramedics are now able to recognize the behaviors of dementia and respond in a more effective manner.”

Daley’s has now made it mandatory for every new

employee to participate in dementia training so that they are able to identify specific needs and respond appropriately.

Their partner company, Bud’s Ambulance Service, which responds to 911 calls in 13 communities on the Southside of Chicago also will be requiring its first responders to complete this training.

“Our role as a community leader is to educate as well as provide innovative services to older adults.

We see tremendous value in offering this powerful educational tool and philanthropic outreach,” said Johnsrud. “We are proud to play a key role in helping Daley’s serve hundreds of seniors in a more effective way.”

Daley’s, which has been in business for more than 60 years, serves the residents of Will, Cook, Grundy, Kendall and DuPage Counties with private ambulance service.

In a flash I thought, oh God, the civil war has started.

Then the headlines shifted and, for the moment, “normalcy” returned.

It’s a Trump-sated normalcy that’s anything but, of course, and the most recent heavily reported violence (at least as I write these words) the murder of three police officers in Baton Rouge - blends into the endlessly simmering turmoil known as the United States of America.

And the civil war, in fact, started long ago. But until recently, only one side has been armed and organized.

That’s why the two latest police killings, by disciplined, heavily armed former military men, loose a terrifying despair. The victims are fighting back - in the worst way possible, but in a way sure to inspire replication.

When people are armed and outraged, the world so easily collapses into us vs. them. All complexity vanishes. People’s life purpose clarifies into a simplistic certainty: Kill the enemy. Indeed, sacrifice your life to do so, if necessary. I fear this is still the nation’s dominant attitude toward its troubles. We’re eating ourselves alive.

One way this is happening was described in a recent New York Times story, “Philando Castile Was Pulled Over 49 Times in 13 Years, Often for Minor Infractions.” Castile, who as the world knows was shot and killed by a police officer during a routine traffic stop on July 6, was a young man caught in a carnivorous system pretty much all his adult life. Every time he started his car, he risked arrest for “driving while black.” The Times quotes a Minneapolis public defender, who described Castile as “typical of low-income drivers who lose their licenses, then become overwhelmed by snowballing fines and fees.” They “just start to feel hopeless.”

The story goes on: “The episode, to

many, is a heartbreaking illustration of the disproportionate risks black motorists face with the police… The killings have helped fuel a growing national debate over racial bias in law enforcement.”

A growing national “debate”? Oh, the politeness! How much racism should we allow the police to show before we censure them? It’s like talking about the “debate” we used to have over the moral legitimacy of lynching.

Here’s Gavin Long’s contribution to the “debate”: “One hundred percent of revolutions, of victims fighting their oppressors, from victims fighting their bullies, one hundred percent have been successful through fighting back through bloodshed. Zero have been successful through simply protesting.

It has never been successful and it never will.”

Long, the former Marine who served a tour of duty in Iraq, shot and killed three police officers in Baton Rouge July 17, 10 days after Micah Johnson, the former Army Reservist who served a tour in Afghanistan, shot and killed five police officers in Dallas.

America, America . . .

What we have here is a toxic mixture of racism and militarism and guns.

We’re in the midst of an endless war against evil - or terror, or whatever - in the Middle East, a war that has pretty much been fought by lowincome recruits who see military service as a way out of poverty. This war is a planet-wrecking disaster, though the raw horror created by our bombs and missiles overseas remains largely outside U.S. public awareness.

Fifteen years in, it’s simply “war” the background noise of American greatness. The consequences are somebody else’s problem.

For instance, the sort of news reported last week on Common Dreams hardly makes it into the debate:

“Dozens of civilians, including children, were killed on Monday and Tuesday by U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria.

“The strikes appeared to have been a mistake, with the civilians taken for Islamic State (IS or ISIS) militants, the U.K.-based human rights group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights group told the AFP news agency.

“Fifty-six civilians were killed on Tuesday by coalition forces, and 21 civilians were killed by the coalition on Monday. The 77 civilian deaths included at least 11 children.”

But they’re not Americans, so such deaths just aren’t that important to us.

Indeed, the war - and the trillions of dollars it costs - go virtually unmentioned in the surreal race for the presidency that’s currently underway.

Also unmentioned is the fact that the war is being brought home to our gunsaturated society by former soldiers fighting back against racist policing the way soldiers always fight back: They’re killing “the enemy.”

The potential volatility of this barely noticed situation is enormous. If protesters decide to arm themselves as they confront heavily armed police, the violence on both sides could morph into civil war.

The only defense against this is awareness, respect and disarmed openness on all sides of the conflict - openness of the sort that took place this past Sunday in Wichita, Kansas.

On the same day, coincidentally, as the police killings in Baton Rouge, members of Black Lives Matter and the Wichita police department cosponsored what they called a “First Steps Cookout”: an outdoor party with “free food - provided by the police, the community and local businesses - and the opportunity to have open conversations with law enforcement,” according to Huffington Post. Nearly a thousand people attended.

This is what takes courage: to get to know your “enemy.” I know at the deepest level of my being that we can walk together toward such awareness.

This is the only chance we have to disarm our volatile future.

North Course at Eagle Ridge another top stop in Galena

The second course we played at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa was the North Course. Built in 1977, the course has more of a country club feel to it without all the amenities that The General had. However, it was still a fun course to play and offered up some great views.

The opening hole is a 347yard hole from the gold tees (2nd longest tees at 6,402 yards). It is a dogleg right that can plan much shorter than its distance.

Next is a tight and curvy par5 at 501 yards. It is a dogleg left off the tee but also has a dogleg right on your approach shot to the green, making accuracy vital on this hole. No. 3 is the hardest hole on the course, a straight away par-4 at 416 yards. It plays long and tight.

No. 4 is 182 yards and is guarded by bunkers on both sides and

plays a bit downhill. The fifth hole is a 482-yard par-5 that doglegs right off the tee and is has a very tight fairway near the green. The sixth hole is a dogleg left that has a more forgiving landing area than many other holes.

The seventh is a gem of a hole with a lake off in the distance in the background. It is 357 yards and is a dogleg left with the fairway sloping right. A long drive through the fairway is as good as gone into the trees. The eighth is a downhill par-3 at 147 yards with a severely sloped green and trouble off the green.

The front nine ends with a 377yard par-4 that is another dogleg left and is uphill. There is a lot of room to the right on this dogleg to bail out, but a tall tree can block a long approach shot into the green.

The back nine starts with a great risk/reward hole. At 314 yards and a sharp dogleg left,

Mitchem to join Lewis mens’ volleyball team

Tyler Mitchem grew up in a basketball household.

His father, James, the superintendent of the Valley View School District, played on DePaul’s 1978-79 Final Four team, while his mother, Jackie, played basketball at Lewis University from 1987-91.

His brother, Kevin, was a member of the Bolingbrook basketball team during his time at Bolingbrook High School.

Basketball, however, was never in the cards for Tyler. Lucky for the area – volleyball is.

Tyler entered Bolingbrook as a 6-foot, 2-inch freshman and is leaving a 6-10 middle blocker on his way to play Division-I volleyball at Lewis University in Romeoville.

This season, he posted 193 kills, 45 blocks and 27 service aces.

“I never expected to be a volleyball player,” Tyler said.

“Our setter Enrique (Barajas) told me to come out when I was a freshman and I just caught on from there. I was never really into anything else – I played the trombone and didn’t like it, I played basketball and didn’t like it, I did track and didn’t like it, I played baseball and didn’t like it.

This was the thing I really liked.

I like that you have the ball for a second and in that second, you can determine where the game

goes.”

Starting to learn the game as a freshman is hard enough on an athlete – trying to learn the game while growing eight inches in four years is even harder.

“It has been growing pains trying to keep my body weight up and learn to stay coordinated,” Tyler said. “I just have to find ways to move my body faster so I can get up for the blocks faster and hit faster and be on top of the game.”

Bolingbrook coach Andrea Bercot said that Tyler’s growth has been easier because of his willingness to learn.

“He is very coachable,” she said. “He is a sponge and he takes whatever coaching from anywhere – us high school coaches and his club coaches – he just takes it really well. He listens to what we say and makes those adjustments.”

Bercot said that while Tyler’s game has grown over four years, his ego has not.

“He has a sense of humbleness and graciousness to him even though he is an amazing player,” she said. “He doesn’t like the hype and he doesn’t like the spotlight to be on him even though it can’t help but be on him. It is really cool to see that he just does his job and he is who he is and he is a leader for us very quietly and humble.”

Tyler will take that humbleness to Lewis, which is a nationally

Cooke makes cut, fails to defend Illinois Open title The 67th Illinois Open Championship was contested in St. Charles.

Carlos Sainz Jr. of Elgin had an impressive showing, winning the tournament by five strokes over Christian Heavens of Fairview Heights at 17-under par, a 197 three-round total. He entered the final round in first place and

matched the low round of the final round torches to the win.

The top Voyager Media area finisher was Andy Michelson of Lockport. Mickelson, the golf pro at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, finished in a tie for fifth with a 7-under par total, 207. He opened with a 5-under 67 before back-to-back 70s brought

him out of contention.

The only other Voyager Media player to make the cut was the defending Illinois Open champ, David Cooke of Lisle, a Bolingbrook graduate. Cooke had rounds of 71, 74 and 70 to finish in a tie for 29th with a 215 total.

Several locals competed, but came up short of the cut, including

several who narrowly missed.

Brian Carlson of Plainfield, Chris Ioriatti of Romeoville and Paul Schlimm of Shorewood all shot 146 for two rounds, missing the cut by one shot.

Nelson, Jackson sign to play professional basketball overseas Former Lewis University men’s basketball standout Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) has signed a professional contract with BK Klatovy out of the Czech Basketball Federation (CBF) in Klatovy, Czech Republic.

“I’m so happy for Nellie that he is able to live out his dream of playing professional basketball,” Trost said. “He has worked extremely hard to get to this position in his career and wish him nothing but the best, because I know he will do well.”

Nelson started 112 of the 117

games that he appeared in a Flyer uniform and finished his career with 1,096 points. As a senior, Nelson averaged a career-best 12.8 points and 6.6 reboundsper-game on his way to All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Second Team accolades and helped the Flyers to the GLVC Tournament Championship. He is third in Lewis school history in both career blocked shots (130) and field goal percentage (.599).

Nelson joins Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./RiversideBrookfield) who inked a

professional contract with France’s Brissac Aubance Basket of the Nationale Masculine 2 League in June.

“I am really proud of Ryan and happy that he is able to achieve his goal of becoming a professional basketball player,” Trost said. “It goes to show you that hard work and dedication pays off.

“I am sure that he will do well (in France) and represent not only himself, but Lewis University, very well.”

No. 11 is a downhill par-5 at 527 yards and takes a good drive to get it over fescue to the fairway. There also are trees left of the fairway and water right, making it a tough driving hole.

No. 12 is 390 yards but is pretty

tight, making it another difficult hole.

The 13th hole is just 146 yards, but it is far from easy. It plays a bit uphill and over some weeds and water with bunkers surrounding the green. The green is also tricky and the hole location the day we played was almost impossible as being a couple feet off would send it down a hill.

Next is a 383-yard dogleg right that is one of the more forgiving holes off the tee, et is still dangerous. Hole 15 offers up some great views off the tee

on the 529-yard, downhill par5. There is a creek guarding the green, making it tough to go for in two, despite the elevation drop.

The 16th hole is 159 yards with water right and bunkers all around and is followed with a 411-yard par-4 that doglegs right and features bunkers in tough spots.

The 18th hole is sadly nothing special of a closing hole as it is a slight dogleg left with several bunkers to the left and in front of the green.

It surprised me that the greens

here were much faster and had more slope to them. The hole locations made it the most difficult greens I’ve had to deal with. There is more water on this course than The General, and, in my opinion, is just as difficult overall.

The cost is a little cheaper than The General at peak time at $115.

Still, it is unlike most courses you will find in the state and is a good course to pair with The General on a golf trip to Galena.

Amazon to open new site in Romeoville Amazon anticipates to be fully operational by October 1 Amazon.com will be opening a new fulfilment center in an existing building in Romeoville bringing with it hundreds of jobs.

Amazon employees at the more than 750,000 square-foot fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship large items to customers such as big-screen televisions, sports equipment or kayaks, for example.

“We are excited to add this new fulfillment center in Romeoville,” said Akash Chauhan, vice president of Amazon’s North America Operations.

“Expanding our footprint in Illinois brings hundreds and hundreds of full-time jobs with competitive pay and great benefits starting on day one to the state.”
