Bolingbrook named in ‘Safest Cities’ list Village is one of 10 Illinois towns to earn the title By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff @BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com

With its many amenities, Bolingbrook is among the National Council for Home Safety and Security’s “Top 100 Safest Cities In America,” according to the 2017 list. With 74,356 residents, the village is one of 10 Illinois towns to earn the title, taking the 86th spot. The list is compiled based largely on the FBI’s 2016 Uniform Crime Report statistics, which include reports of violent crimes and property crimes and crime rate based on population. The release notes that according to the FBI, violent crime has been decreasing over the past 10 years (down by 16.5 percent from

2006 to 2015) while property crime rates continue to gradually fall by 2 percent per year. Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) has shown that police have improved their methods for monitoring troubled areas and having more outreach. The group who created the list, draws the conclusion that these methods help to prevent crime and encourage people to work to become model citizens. It further reports that the more entertainment and attractions a city has, the more the need for increased development and property values to rise. The report takes Bolingbrook’s motto, “ A Place to Grow,” to heart and reports, “being just 28 miles south of Chicago, Bolingbrook is full of places to view wildlife. The Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve contains a waterfall and is home to the Argonne National Laboratory. The Hidden Oaks Nature Center is a great place to view a variety of animal such as coyotes and great horned owls. For recreation, there are plenty of parks, aquatic centers,

and more than 10 golf courses in the area.” To compile the list, the National Council for Home Safety and Security reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics along with its own internal research. It eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and removed cities with populations under 50,000. The remaining cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery), property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft), and officer count. Note that these variables were weighted, with violent crimes accounting for the majority of the total due to their severity. Bolingbrook reported 136 violent crimes and 991 property crimes. Among the other Illinois towns listed include Oak Lawn, Tinley Park, Naperville, Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Wheaton.
