Romeoville rec. department offers summer events Rockin’ the Ville with Hairbangers Ball among events on summer schedule Residents caught the Disney movie “Inside Out,” under the stars this past Friday at Deer Crossing Park, where the Romeoville Recreation Department is hosting a number of summer activities.

Next up is Rockin’ the Ville with the Hairbangers Ball, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 21.

Working to increase community literacy Literacy of DuPage seeks tutors for adult literacy program By laura katauskas staff reporter

Literacy can be the difference when looking for a job, advocating for a child or grabbing the right groceries.

With nearly 400 volunteers serving more than 500 learners in DuPage County to gain English skills, Literacy of DuPage is working to increase literacy in the community, but the need is still great.

Sang Yup Lee, volunteer outreach coordinator for the group, says there are nearly 300 learners on a waiting list. Of the 35 communities it serves, Bolingbrook has the sixth highest number of residents who are waiting to be matched with tutors.

To meet this dire need for volunteer tutors, Literacy of DuPage is partnering with the Fountaindale Public Library to recruit and train volunteer tutors in the Bolingbrook area.

Recently retired with a desire to contribute to the community, David Stephenson of Naperville has been serving as a volunteer for the past year and has seen the changes that helping with literacy can make.

“I was surprised at the inadequate amount of tutors that are available and wanted to get involved,” said Stephenson.

“There are many immigrants in this area and they want to learn.

Here is an opportunity to interact with people and help in the community.”

His first learner, a man from Columbia, was eager to pass his citizenship test. After practicing test skills with him, he gained the confidence to take the test.

Stephenson’s second group, three women from Mexico, have come together to, among other reasons, learn the language in order to better relate to their children and support them in their education.

Lee explains that 90 percent of the people served, are parents and the group holds the motto “Teach a Parent, Reach a Child - Adult Literacy Strengthens Families.”

“A majority of our learners want to gain the English skills they need to support their families, including being able to speak with their children’s teachers and pediatricians, shop for groceries, and fill out basic job applications,” according to Lee. Stephenson says he can see the confidence building in his students to interact after each lesson.

“Within Bolingbrook there is a fairly established Latino community and most Spanishspeaking people can get by without speaking English. However, as their children enter an English language school system, parents want to help with homework and speak with teachers,” he said.

“Parents are motivated and they start to clearly see the benefits.”

All tutors at the Literacy of DuPage are volunteers. Those that do want to volunteer do not need to have any foreign language or teaching experience. Through 18 hours of tutor training and continued support from staff and peer tutors, volunteer tutors gain the skills they need to collaborate with their learners to develop and implement lesson plans that focus on each learner’s goals.

A tutor meets a learner for oneon-one tutoring (or in some cases two to three learners for small group tutoring) at a mutually convenient time and location for two hours per week. Most tutor/ learner pairs meet at the library.

Lee said a tutor/learner pair is not stuck in a classroom setting or to a specific curriculum. A

tutoring session affords the pair flexibility on how the learner could gain the skills he or she needs to achieve his/her goals.

For example, if a learner’s goal is to be able to go grocery shopping, the tutor could go over key vocabulary the learner needs to identify the grocery items and to speak with the store clerks.

The pair can then role play the experience of grocery shopping so that the learner can practice her conversational skills and gain the confidence to implement what was learned. Then, the tutor and learner (if they both wish) can take the lesson to the field by actually grocery shopping together.

“Through our accessible and customizing tutoring, we help our learners to gain the life skills they need to survive and thrive in our community,” said Lee. “Our tutors enjoy the rewarding experience of being with their learners every step of the way in their learners’ journeys of personal growth.”

Stephenson agrees.

“It certainly is enriching for me,” he said. “I’ve met wonderful people and learned about the Spanish culture along the way.

We have immigrants from all over and have to realize the difficulty they face.

“There is such a high demand and so few people to help,” Stephenson added. “I encourage people to give some of their time.

Chamber conducting school supply drive Supply drive runs July 18 to Aug. 5 The Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce is launching a school supply drive for children in schools throughout the village.

BHS grad wins baton twirling title Bolingbrook High School graduate Nicola Colucy won the Collegiate Solo, X-Strut

and One Baton Solo divisions at the National Baton Twirling Association’s Illinois State Championship earlier this month.

A senior at Eastern Illinois University where she will be the Feature Twirler for the Color Guard unit of the EIU Panther Marching Band for the third straight year, Colucy has also qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Houston and placed 2nd in Two Baton, 5th in Solo, 11th in X-strut, and 13th in 3-Baton at the NBTA Twirling championships in South Bend earlier this year.

Colucy’s path to becoming a baton twirling champion was not easy. At the age of 2-1/2, she was diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)…a relatively unfamiliar disorder, similar to an audio dyslexia or a bad audio track on a television program where the mouth and voice aren’t in sync.

She was able to function normally, but couldn’t process the information she heard in the same way as everyone else does

because her ears and her brain didn’t communicate well with each other.

Colucy credits her parents

and her teachers and resource people in Valley View School District 365U with teaching her coping skills since there wasn’t any medicine or cure for CAPD. Now when her brain does not understand what it hears, she knows how to handle it.

“I am successfully overcoming my disorder every day,” said Colucy, who is constantly working to raise public awareness about speech and hearing disabilities.

“As a student with CAPD, I shouldn’t have been a third year percussionist for the BHS Symphonic Band or twirling with the Marching Raiders, playing trombone in the BHS Jazz Band, acting, dancing, performing, on the Honor Roll, or successfully doing one-on-one interviewing with judges at my twirling competitions.

The doctors, therapists, and teachers thought it would be impossible.”

Colucy will graduate from EIU with a degree in Sports Management. She hopes to work in the health communications or sports management.

St. Andrew the Apostle welcomes new principal Carol Albreski stresses importance of respecting diversity, spiritual growth

By Bugle staff Veteran teacher Carol Albreski will be taking the helm at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic School in Romeoville.

Albreski comes from the St. Matthew Parish School in Glendale Heights, where she has taught for the past 17 years as a fourth-grade teacher and assistant principal.

She said she is honored to be accepted as the new principal of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic

School and decided 32 years ago to make catholic education her lifelong vocation.

“My career began in Erie, Pennsylvania at the same elementary school I attended as a child and I was proud to be an Our Lady of Peace Crusader.

I am thrilled to be a Crusader once again. While the standards, assessments, and methods have evolved through the years, one thing has remained clear and constant for me as an educator: It’s all about the kids. I recognize

By Jason Florin | Bugle Columnist It’s the first week of sophomore English class, and my class has been assigned to read “Romeo & Juliet.” The teacher gets the discussion going with a simple question, “Who does Romeo love?” One girl raises her hand and says in a lively tone, “Juliet!”

We all nod our heads in agreement, as the answer seems obvious. But the teacher pauses, turns to the girl, and lets out her best game show buzzer noise: “Ennngght, sorry.” She then pivots toward the board and writes a name: R-O-S-A-L-I-N-E. “Romeo loves Rosaline,” she informs us.

Of course, she was absolutely right.

Although Juliet’s name makes it into the title of the play, much of Romeo’s time is spent lamenting the fact that he can’t be with Rosaline. Yet, he quickly moves on when he meets Juliet, and the divide between their families only makes his passion stronger.

Ultimately, all logic goes out the window and (hoping we don’t need a spoiler alert here) the two die for one another.

Breaking the spell Is this what we mean by love? Joy, devotion, intrigue…certainly. But fleeting attraction, young lust, and (again, not really a spoiler) death by poison and dagger? I hope not. Love is not the fantasy that fairy tales tell us to spend a life chasing.

I love my wife more than any person in the world. I love my family, my friends and even my cats on their better days. But, these relationships didn’t appear with the wave of a wand.

They are the product of connection, time, commitment and patience.

Relationships change; they aren’t a fixed state of bliss. The problem begins when a person thinks that love must be a constant thrill ride of passionate perfection.

I won’t be so pretentious as to claim that I have discovered something unique about love that no one else has experienced. What I do know is that holding love up as a mystical ideal can do a lot more harm in our relationships than good. The seemingly mundane

At times, our men and women in blue come “under siege.” What would we do as a nation, state, city, village or community if we had none of their protection? They all are our custodians.

CARE about the environment

I am writing to encourage people in our community to join Citizens Against Ruining the Environment – CARE to eliminate the use of disposable plastic shopping bags in Will and surrounding counties.

A major problem with the plastic bags is that only a small percentage of them are recycled, although collection bins are available for plastic bag recycling at some major grocery stores.

Therefore, our landfills are filled with plastic bags and other plastic items that are not recycled.

Plastic bags take 1,000 years to photodegrade (break into smaller and smaller pieces). Every year, 15 billion pounds of plastic are produced in the U.S., but only 1 billion pounds are recycled. Also, because plastic bags use oil in their manufacturing, we are

using 12 million barrels of oil to make plastic bags.

Anyone who has driven past farmer’s fields in our area, and frequented natural areas, or in their own community, has seen fields littered and despoiled by plastic bags caught in bushes. Besides being unsightly, plastic bags kill wildlife when they fly into woods, streams, the Great Lakes and oceans. Small pieces of plastic are eaten by birds and fish, and enter the food chain right into you!

Alternatives to plastic disposable shopping bags include the use of cloth bags, which last years before they fall apart or for store owners to charge customers for paper bags, if they don’t bring their own shopping bags. If the paper bags are made from 100 percent recycled paper, then trees are not cut down to make the paper bags.

For an incentive to customers who bring their own bags, stores could give customers a raffle ticket for a chance to win a store gift card.

Former Raider Doris to compete for Guyana in 2016 Olympics By mark gregory SportS reporter

For the last four years, Bolingbrook native Troy Doris has had his sights set on competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janerio, Brazil – however the way he is getting there may seem unconventional to some.

Doris will compete in the triple jump, representing the country of Guyana, the fourth-smallest country on mainland South America. Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Suriname to the east and Venezuela to the west.

Doris is Guyanese by naturalization, with both his parents being born there and coming to America at a young age.

“It has been years of anticipation and hope for this moment,” Doris said. “I used to compete for the U.S, but I felt that switching to Guyana just gave me a better

opportunity for track and field.

The U.S. is more competitive and I knew I could have done it, there are just so many people that I know that I know there are chances to miss out on competing in these Olympic games even if you are one of the best in the world.”

Doris had been the No. 2 ranked jumper in the world earlier this year, but he knows with a talented American contingent competing for a bid at Rio, one bad day could have saw him miss out on his opportunity.

“Now that everyone is established, I am currently No. 6 in the world, which is phenomenal, but I see how quick things change,” Doris said. “I have had a number of bad days. Thankfully I have had more good days than bad days to cover them up. It is just crazy to keep myself in a situation to be ranked this high and maybe not be able to compete with some of the best in the world.”

Jarosz tabbed male AOY;Akenten leads locals

When Plainfield North’s Zach Jarosz opted to have surgery midway through the basketball season to be ready by midseason for baseball, he had one thing on his mind – a state baseball title.

While the Tigers came up short, the plan worked for Jarosz as he came on strong down the stretch of the season and helped the Tigers win their first state trophy.

That capped a remarkable season career for Jarosz, but his senior year is one for the record books.

That is why Jarosz is the Voyager Media Male Multisport Athlete of the Year.

It all started during the football season, where Jarosz made some incredible catches, including one to help beat Oswego.

For the season he caught 47 passes for 842 yards and 12 touchdowns. The stats don’t tell the whole tale though as Jarosz was named All-State in Class 7A. “He was a game breaker for us and proved to be a very difficult matchup for many teams,” North football coach Tim Kane said after football season. “He also set numerous school records for receiving yards and TD’s.”

Next up was basketball where Jarosz started and saw extensive minutes as a hard-working player that coach Bob Krahulik praised throughout the season.

His loss midway through the season hurt the team in multiple ways as Jarosz not only brought toughness to the team, he added a valuable body as the Tigers were riddled with injuries by the end of the year and went with a six or seven man rotation at the end of

the year.

Then came baseball, where he didn’t start the season but was the leadoff hitter once healthy and batted .356 with nine doubles, two triples and scored 28 runs in 27 games, culminating with the state trip.

Other multisport athletes of the year, by zone, are:

Akenten was a member of the Voyager Media All-Area Basketball third team after he averaged 14 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting .460 from

JCA graduate Murphy part of United States volleyball team

For a United States volleyball player, there is no national professional league.

It isn’t like basketball, where players can reach the NBA or WNBA within the United States.

If you want to continue your playing career in volleyball, you have to go overseas to play and, if you are among the best of the best, you have a chance to represent your country at a few FIVB Tournaments throughout the year.

However, once every four years you have that chance to make the U.S. team and play in the Olympics.

Joliet Catholic Academy graduate Kelly Murphy is one of the few players who is able to represent her country after she was selected to compete for the USA at the Rio Olympics in August.

“It feels pretty good,” Murphy said. “The only way I can really describe it right now is that I feel really happy and I am really grateful for this opportunity.”

It has taken years of hard work, dedication and the willingness to play overseas and get to spend little time in her home state.

“It has been a long time,” Murphy said of the amount of years of work put in to get to this stage. “There has been a lot of ups and downs and sacrifice, but this feeling makes it

totally worth it.”

The past couple years Murphy has been playing in Japan and this fall will be in China. That, coupled with the summer months spent with Team USA, there is little time for anything else.

“I try to get back to the area as often as I can, maybe around three times a year,” Murphy said. “It is a cool opportunity to play a sport and get paid for it. You get to travel and see a lot of places I probably wouldn’t if I didn’t play volleyball.

The negative is that I am away a lot and don’t get to see my family and miss some important events. You have to sacrifice some things to get some other things, so it all evens out at some point. It is not really a part time job.”

The Olympics looked like a possibility for Murphy way back in her Joliet Catholic days where she was the 2007-08 Gatorade National High School Volleyball Player of the Year and was the nation’s top recruit by prepvolleyball.com.

She was the AVCA National Freshman of the Year at the University of Florida in 2008 and was a three-time All-American her final three years in college.

Her Team USA career began in 2013, where she competed in several tournaments and helped the U.S. win gold in the Pan American Cup and NORCECA Championship, where she was named MVP and Best Spiker.

Murphy led the team in scoring

in both 2013 and 2014 and scored a team-best 157 points in the FIVB World Championships, where the USA took first place.

Despite all her successes, she did not compete in the final two tournaments of the year in 2015 for the U.S., which left her selection to the Olympic Team in doubt.

However, she took the time to improve her game and she competed in the recently concluded FIVB World Grand Prix, where the U.S. took second.

“I don’t really think it added motivation, I just took it as an opportunity to learn,” Murphy said. “I had a lot of time to make improvements and get stronger.

I was able to improve areas of my game where I might not have known I needed it.”

The 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics begin Aug. 5 and go to Aug. 21. The volleyball schedule has yet to be released.

“I think we’re going to take these few weeks before competition and focus on details of our game,” Murphy said. “We talk a lot about serving and passing being the most important part and can control the match. If we can be solid at that, I feel we will be ready for any team we play. It is the Olympics, so everyone will be bringing their 110 percent effort every match. We go in with a pretty high ranking and that puts a target on our back. I think we have

“There are a lot of positives to come out of a loss like that,”

Murphy said of the loss to Brazil. “It was a good match and it went right down to the end. We can take it as an opportunity to learn how to beat a great team like Brazil.”

At the Olympics, Murphy is just happy to be a part of the team and looking to help out wherever she can in the team’s quest for the gold medal.

“I want to be able to contribute wherever I can,” Murphy said. “If that means I am starting, great. If

You don’t realize just how many people are behind you and I am glad to have this opportunity to represent them and all the people who have helped me and supported me throughout my entire career.”

“I am excited to compete to compete for Guyana and I have wanted to compete for them since 2012,” he said. “I have roots there and my family is from Guyana and it is very sentimental for them and now that I have the opportunity to compete, I am taking full advantage. For me to be in a situation to be the guy representing them is amazing.”

Guayana is slated to have only four track competitors and two swimmers represent the country in the games, so Doris knows it will be a more intimate experience.

“It gives you the feeling that more eyes are on you from the country,” he said. “There is no pressure, but they are expecting good things. It is a grand situation.

This is not just me doing it for me, I am doing it for my family and I am doing it for a whole country. I am doing it for recognition, which is crazy.”

There has only been one Olympic medalist in the history of Guyana, as bantamweight boxer Michael Anthony earned a bronze medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union.

Rio will not be the first time

Doris has competed overseas and he said he has enjoyed all of the experiences.

“I have always appreciated the professionals that were in my situation that I looked up to, but I think what has gotten me to the point where I am able to go all over and compete is the fact that since high school until now, I just take it year by year and try and do my best and appreciate every moment I get out of it,” he said. “It just so happens that the moments are getting bigger and bigger and they are to the point to where I am competing against the best in the world and I have a chance to travel the world and have these neat experiences and experience other cultures is something that I never imagined I would do as a 15-year old jumping in high school.”

While at Bolingbrook, Doris owns two of the top 20 best triple jumps in Illinois history, including the No. 2 spot with a state championship leap of 52-feet, 3-inches his senior season in 2007.

He also claimed the state title in the event his junior year and won the long jump his senior year.

The then had a successful career at the University of Iowa before turning professional after graduation.

“It was an interest freshman year and sophomore year it became an obsession,” Doris said. “Then, my junior and senior year, I had

significant progression and I knew then I could take it serious and go to college and professional. I knew it was meant for me.”

Knowing it was meant for him meant a shot at the Olympics, which now that it is a reality, was not something Doris was going to skip the games because of

something like Zika Virus, which has been the reason some of the world’s top golfers and basketball players have passed on going.

“I understand because like for the basketball players, their focus is on winning the NBA title. But for track, this is what you work so hard for and it is not easy to just

give up on it,” he said. “I can only control what I can control. I can’t control the political situations and I can’t control Zika virus, so I just worry about what I can control.”

What Doris will look to control is his opportunity and bring an Olympic home for Guyana and for Bolingbrook.
