BY LAURA KATAUSKAS | STAFF REPORTER Dedicated to serving others at its core, the Bolingbrook Lions Club provides a variety of support to its community members.

Known for its work to help fight blindness, the Lion’s Club recently held a dedication for its first eyeglass collection box, located just outside the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Center, (Lily Cache and Lindsey lanes). This box will allow for a convenient location to drop off used eyeglasses, hearing aids, cell phones, chargers and ink cartridges.

Donating more than $35,000 annually to community needs, the Bolingbrook Lions Club is one of the largest clubs in the State and is looking for additional support as it hosts its largest fundraiser of the year.

The 33rd Annual Benefit Golf Outing and Dinner will be held at noon, Thursday, Aug. 3 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, 2001 Rodeo Drive. Cost to attend the outing is $140 per golfer and includes dinner. You may also purchase tickets just for dinner at a cost of $50 which includes two-hour open bar and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Each year, the Lion’s Club takes on numerous projects: providing eyeglasses and hearing aids to community residents; vision screenings with a machine the club has now acquired giving them the ability to bring the service to its own residents; and offering free hearing tests.

In addition, the Club raises funds to send at least four vision or hearing impaired children to Camp Lions and provides three to four $500 scholarships each year.

Manley bill requiring human State colleges to trafficking course in CDL receive funding training sent to governor ‘...trafficking is a real problem . . . it often uses the same road networks found in our communities...’

A proposal sponsored by state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, which would require commercial driver’s license (CDL) applicants to receive information on human trafficking prevention has been sent to the governor’s desk following bipartisan support.

“Human trafficking is a real problem that exists in our country, and it often uses the

same road networks found in our communities and across the state,” Manley said. “By teaching our commercial drivers about this inhumane practice, we can hopefully identify and prevent cases of human trafficking in Illinois.”

House Bill 1677 would require the Secretary of State to

incorporate a course on human trafficking within the training curriculum of accredited CDL education programs.

Human trafficking, which typically forces individuals into involuntary labor or uses them for sexual exploitation, is estimated to affect between 14,500 and 17,500 individuals within the United States.

Globally, human trafficking victimizes more than 20 million people.

“Nobody should have to suffer through the indignity of modern day slavery,” Manley said. “Lives are at stake, and this training will ensure that more residents are looking out for this disgusting criminal behavior.”

After a harmful lapse in payments due to a two-year budget impasse, state funds will again be disbursed to Illinois colleges and universities and their neediest students, a move praised by State Senator and Senate Higher Education Committee Chairman Pat McGuire.

“Bravo to Comptroller Susana Mendoza for releasing $523 million to Illinois colleges and universities, including community colleges, for operating funds and Monetary

Award Program financial aid,” McGuire said. “The 736 days Illinois was without a budget threatened to inflict damage to Illinois higher education which would take years to repair. Especially troubling was Governor Rauner’s refusal to even consider making good on MAP grants for the last fiscal year until he got what he wanted in the new fiscal year’s budget.

“Thankfully, the bipartisan passage of a balanced budget which backfills Fiscal Year 2017 and provides a full year of funding Fiscal Year 2018, combined with Comptroller Mendoza’s prompt and compassionate action, enables Illinois students and institutions of higher learning to get their futures back on track.”

While the pet store Puppy in the Window may have left the Joliet city limits, it did not leave animal rights activist group Safe Pets for Joliet behind. The shop, which has been located at 2400 Caton Farm Rd. in Crest Hill for about six weeks, was the site of a protest July 15 organized by Safe Pets for Joliet.

“Puppy in the Window used to be located in Joliet and since they have moved, we are supporting our friends in Crest Hill because they are now dealing with the problem we had,” said Morgan Drdak, founder of Safe Pets for Joliet. “What we are doing out here today is raising awareness that the pet store does not have a rescue model and sells dogs from commercial breeders. We want

to encourage people to rescue or adopt and not buy from stores that sell animals from mills because that just perpetuates the problem and puts money into the pockets of the inhumane breeders.”

While Roxana Dusanek, owner of Puppy in the Window, acknowledges she is a for-profit business that makes money off the sale of animals, she denies any inhumane actions.

“I have spent my entire adult life fighting for the welfare of animals,” Dusanek said. “So, to be accused of doing the one thing I would never do just hurts. Are there pet stores that buy from puppy mills? Yes. But I don’t. I do make a profit off the sale of animals, but to say that I abuse them and neglect them is beyond farfetched.”

Dusanek said she feels groups like Safe Pets for Joliet would be better off working with her than against her.

“The accusations that they make are so farfetched,” she said. “If we would work together, we could probably eliminate puppy mills, but the fact that they are so radical and so unwilling to listen and work

together makes it even harder.

We are spending time fighting against each other instead of fighting to stop the awful puppy mills. In the things they pass out, the breeders on the list were 9 days after I bought the store and none of those puppies were purchased by me.”

Safe Pets for Joliet also state that puppy mills are not the only reason for their protest – it is also to educate consumers.

“There are no return policies at pet stores – they don’t exist,” Drdak said. “If you buy a dog and it is $5,000 after financing and you can’t afford the health care or the payments, it doesn’t matter, it is your problem. So, this is as much about consumer protection. We are trying to educate people. They go to a pet store and fall in love and they don’t realize what they are doing on the back end and that is supporting financially the animal cruelty that goes on in puppy mills and taking away the opportunity for a homeless pet to find a home. There are a lot of bad of buying from a pet store and we are just trying to educate people on that.”

Lewis offers personalized tour, activities Graduate students created the programming that examines Lincoln, Lockport and the I&M Canal Make history come alive this summer with fun activities at Lincoln Landing in Lockport.

Summer interns Troy Costabile of Lockport and Kole Torres of Carol Stream will be conducting free programs that will engage children, families and the general public.

Lincoln Landing is located at 200 E 9th St, Lockport, IL 60441, adjoining the Gaylord Building.

The Lewis University College of Education graduate students created the programming that examines Lincoln, Lockport and the I&M Canal. The Give Something Back Foundation sponsored these student internships.

Steve Cardamone, executive director and board member of the Give Something Back Foundation, said, “The interns at Lincoln are vital for the park. They will be able to share the story of why Lincoln Landing is so integral to not only Lockport, but to the State

of Illinois. Bob Carr’s passion for preserving this precious story is really a long reaching gift to future generations and these docents tell that story today.”

Patient-centered care shouldn’t be just a marketing slogan

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN Rural Health News Service Recently I heard from a woman in rural Nebraska who told me about her 76-year old father, who in late April had a lemon-size cancerous mass removed from his brain. The man chose to have his chemotherapy and radiation treatments at a hospital close to his home instead of at one of the larger hospitals farther away. Not surprisingly he wanted family nearby. Nearly two months later, in mid-June, his treatments finally began. Why the delay?

His daughter told me the nearby hospital “had no record of two appointments they had made with my dad and rescheduled at least once.” She asked me if her father was being neglected because he was on Medicare, adding, “He is so angry. We are so angry. So much for urgency and professionalism.”

So much for patient-centered care – that buzz phrase that’s all the rage in healthcare circles. It goes by a lot of different names like patient engagement, patient activation, and shared-decision making. If care is truly patient-centered, it revolves around eight principles identified in research by the Harvard Medical School and the Picker Institute. They include respect for patient preferences, coordination of care, information and education, physical comfort, emotional support, involvement of family and friends, continuity and transition, and access to care.

For the family in question, the Nebraska hospital simply didn’t meet those standards.

What passes for patient-centered care falls short for a lot of other people, too, like one man who spent weeks trying to get his diabetic test strips. His current supplier had lost its Medicare contract, and Medicare sent him a letter advising him of a new approved source.

He called the number he was sent and ordered new strips. A week later he went to the pharmacy to pick up his supplies

but was told they had no record of his order. Days passed before he got the strips.

Six months later he encountered another problem – this time with his supplier of pens used to inject insulin. He ordered them and approved the charge to his credit card using a telephone automated order system. Several days later the supplier called and left a message asking him to confirm the shipment.

When he called back, he learned the cost exceeded the limit for automatic approvals, and the order wouldn’t be processed until he personally approved the charge. No one had told him there was a limit. So much time had passed that he had only a two-day of supply of insulin left. “The delay created a potential emergency,” he said.

Often patient engagement has come to mean selling things, particularly tools and devices, that purport to help patients manage their care. During the man’s many calls with the supplier the company tried to sell him knee and back braces, advising that Medicare would pay if he got a doctor’s prescription.

Last year I was invited to attend a panel discussion about innovations in patient engagement. The room was full of young marketers eager to sell their products and share the best ways to reach patients. Since the term patient engagement is so slippery, it wasn’t surprising the program began with a discussion of what it actually meant.

One panelist offered this definition:

“It really has to do with how can you get patients to do more or become more active in the ecosystem about their health.” Another said, “Let’s think of patient engagement as a marketplace.

How are they engaged in the marketplace?

Perhaps he meant that people like the man who needed an insulin pen pronto would be “engaged” enough to buy a brace he did not need.

Another panelist noted, “People’s engagement with health is quite low.

There’s a gap we’re seeing between technology and tools and the patients and doctors involved in using them.” A fellow panelist said patients “don’t want just excellent care. They want an experience.”

Most experts would argue that patients too often are not getting excellent care. Postponing medical treatment because of schedulers’ errors and nearly running out of insulin because a company’s procedures are inefficient hardly qualify as excellent care. “Experiences” like those are all too common.

That’s not to say patients shouldn’t be active in their care. Growing evidence suggests that patients who are more actively involved have better health outcomes. But that doesn’t mean profitseeking providers should be pushing unnecessary care, pills, or devices onto patients.

I recently got a letter called a Care Consideration from Aetna, my supplemental insurer. It said, “This information was identified to support you in working with your doctor to improve your health.” The letter was a not-sosubtle push to take a statin for heart disease. There was just one problem. At my last physical less than a year ago my cholesterol was “excellent,” as it always has been. No medication required.

Pushing a drug and trying to overrule my doctor does not qualify as patient engagement.

Joliet Slammers host Frontier League All-Star festivities

Last week, Joliet was the epicenter of the Frontier League as the Slammers hosted the annual league All Star game and corresponding events.

The activities included everything from a golf outing at Mistwood Golf Club to a beer fest to a replica of the Collins Street prison as a giveaway to fans.

“It has been a tremendous three days,” said Frontier League Commissioner Bill Lee at the game. “The Joliet Slammers staff

has done things great. Every event has been wonderful. The city treated us great, the accommodations have been great and the fans were wonderful. I can’t say enough good things about our experience here in Joliet these few days.”

The events in Joliet marked the 25th anniversary of the Frontier League – the oldest independent league still in operation.

The league is still keeping with its mission to allow players the chance to chase their dream to play professional baseball.

Getting the win was a bonus, but the Slammers’ players were just happy to be playing at home.

“Me and my teammates were so excited,” Silva said. “We were

so excited to be home. We live like 10 minutes from here, so we could relax. It was awesome.”

The day before the game, Jeff Gardner of the Evansville Otters won the home run derby with his 14th homer of the round and 41st of the evening. Gardner entered the break leading the Frontier League with 13 total home runs.

Inducted were: Chase Burch – he played for the Traverse City Beach Bums from 2010-13. He finished his Frontier League career with .283 batting average, 68 home runs, and 235 RBI and helped the Beach Bums to the 2010 Frontier League Championship Series; Travis Garcia, who played for the Ohio Valley Redcoats (2005), Chillicothe Paints (2006-08). He was the 2007 league Most Valuable Player and

posted a Frontier League career .304 batting average, 57 home runs and 275 RBI. He paced Chillicothe to the 2006 Championship Series; Gator McBride, who played for the Chillicothe Paints (1998-99). In 1998 he led the Paints to the Championship Series. He batted .423 with 27 home runs and 111 RBI in 108 Frontier League games before signing with the Boston Red Sox; Pete Pirman, who played for the Evansville Otters (2002), Richmond Roosters (2003) and Kalamazoo Kings (2004-06). The 2005 Most Valuable Player led Kalamazoo to its only Frontier League title. He is tied for the single season record with 100 RBI in 2005 and posted a .300 batting average with 47 home runs and 247 RBI in his Frontier League career.

Joining the players was Special Contributor Steve Sturgill.

He was the first president of the Frontier League and one of the original league owners, running the Portsmouth Explorers in 1993 and 1994.

He is the only person other than Bill Lee to have his signature stamped on the Frontier League baseball.

“I’m very proud of the Hall of Fame Class of 2017. This class represents the first 21 years of the League. All the players contributed greatly to the success of their teams. They proved to be leaders with their offensive and defensive skills,” Lee said in a release. “Steve Sturgill was one of the founders of the League and helped to pave the way for all the players to be become Hall of Famers.”

McCarthy officially joins Flyers staff Lewis University head women’s basketball coach Samantha Quigley Smith announced on Wednesday (July 12) that she has hired Dan McCarthy as an assistant coach.

McCarthy, who is a 1974 graduate of Lewis University and member of the Flyers’ 1974 NAIA National Championship baseball team, served as Quigley Smith’s assistant at the University of St. Francis for the past five years.

“We are so excited to have Dan be a part of the Flyer Family,” Quigley Smith said. “His love for the game and making individuals better on the court, in the classroom and in life is second to none.”

During his tenure at St. Francis, the Fighting Saints went 10162 (.620), including two Top 10 finishes in the NAIA Division II Coaches Poll and a No. 1 ranking in the final 2017 poll. In the past two seasons, USF went 62-7 (.899) and finished 2017 with a mark of 34-2, including an undefeated slate in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and a berth in the NAIA Division II Semifinals. One of those 34 wins was an 80-69 victory in December over then-No. 18 ranked Lewis.

McCarthy brings 40 years of coaching experience to Lewis as he has enjoyed stops at Joliet Catholic (1976-90), Marquette

(1990-96) and West Chicago (1996-2016). He coached both basketball and baseball at all three stops.

In 2003, he was named the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Assistant Coach of the Year.

ST. FRANCIS Steve Brooks, the fifth-winningest active coach in NAIA Division II, has been named the new head women’s basketball coach at University of St. Francis, director of athletics Dave Laketa announced Wednesday.

Brooks comes to Joliet following an 18-year stint at Indiana Wesleyan University where he

won two NAIA Division II national championships (2006-07, 2012-13) and one NCCAA national title (2001-2002). He holds an overall record of 469-133 and has been awarded five national coach of the year awards.

“Coach Brooks boasts quite the winning pedigree on the basketball court, but what impressed the committee the most was how he developed champions off the court, in the classroom and in the community,” said Laketa. “He built teams the right way and the student-athletes came out better because of it.”

“Of his former players and colleagues that I talked to, they first brought up his character and the

man he is before discussing the coach he is. That told me a lot about the person Steve is and how great a fit he would be for our program.”

The graduation rate of Brooks’ teams at Indiana Wesleyan was a perfect 100 percent for the players who played in the program all four years. He also led eight service trips with his teams.

“First of all, I want to thank Dave Laketa, Dr. Arvid Johnson, Damon Sloan and the entire search committee for conducting the search process in a firstclass way and for making me feel welcomed,” Brooks said. “I am

Brooks’ teams at Indiana Wesleyan were especially dominant in the late 2000s, setting many NAIA women’s basketball

records highlighted by his 200607 squad becoming the first NAIA national champion to go undefeated (38-0). The program also posted an NAIA record 56 consecutive wins between 2006 and

2008, and was ranked No. 1 for 37 straight weeks during that run, the most of any NAIA Division II program.

On the national stage, Brooks holds a 25-12 record at the NAIA National Championships with his IWU teams reaching the national tournament in 14 consecutive seasons between 2002 and 2016.

At the conference level, Brooks’ Wildcats won 78 percent of their Crossroads League/Mid-Central College Conference games (212-61), while claiming 10 regular-season league crowns and another six tournament championships. Seven times he was named the conference coach of the year.

During his tenure at Indiana Wesleyan, Brooks coached 15 NAIA All-Americans, 22 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 25 allconference players. He was also recognized with the President’s Award for Outstanding Leadership and the Athletic Director’s Award at the Marion, Ind.-based school.

Previous to Indiana Wesleyan, Brooks served two stints as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Taylor University (1983-86, 1993-99) and seven years as the head men’s basketball coach at Houghton College from 1986-93.

He also coached for two seasons as an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Liberty Benton High School in Findlay, Ohio.

Brooks did his undergraduate work at Taylor where he earned a B.A. in Religion. He also has a M.A. in Ministerial Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan and a M.A. in Physical Education from Ball State University.

• Londyn Feasel (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) has announced that she will transfer to University of St. Francis to play women’s soccer for the Fighting Saints after competing at Saint Joseph’s College (Ind.) last year.

A sophomore forward/ midfielder, Feasel closed out her high school career as head coach Krissy Sullivan’s leading scorer.

With that distinction came a myriad of honors.

Besides being named the Quakers’ top team player, Feasel earned second-team all-state status, all-county honors and allconference recognition. She was also named an academic all-state honorable mention choice.

“I am happy Londyn decided on St. Francis to continue her college experience,” said St. Francis head coach John Nikchevich.

• University of St. Francis head men’s soccer coach Dan Cross has announced the signing of Carlos Ferrer Coto (La Fresneda, Spain/Colegio San Ignacio) to a letter of intent to attend the Joliet-based school and play for the Fighting Saints.

Coto, a goalkeeper, stands six feet, two inches and checks in at 205 pounds.

“I am very excited to announce the signing of Carlos,” said Cross.

“He is part of an exciting 2017 recruiting class and an important addition to our squad. He will add more competition to the goalkeeper position, competing for the starting spot with our other returnees.

“Carlos comes to us with plenty of experience playing at a high

USF added another international flair to its 2017 roster in striker Joshua Yeaman (Doncaster, United Kingdom/Balbycarr Academy), who recently signed a letter of intent to attend the Joliet-based school and play for the Fighting Saints.

“I am excited that Joshua has decided to further his education and soccer career her at University of St. Francis,” said Cross.

“Josh is the type of striker that I have been looking for since I came to St. Francis. He is physically strong, he holds the ball up well and he brings others in to play. He is also capable of beating opponents and has a powerful shot.

“Josh will look to compete for a starting position at the center forward role. This is an area of the field that needed strengthening.”

Yeaman plans to major in recreation and sport management.

“Josh is another native from England and he will give us some

more grit and determination on the soccer field,” added Cross.

• Luke Tanaka has joined the University of St. Francis athletic department as its director of athletic communications, it was announced by USF director of athletics Dave Laketa on Monday.

Tanaka replaces Dave Hilbert, who served in the same capacity for each of the past five years before taking on a position at East Carolina University in April.

“I am thrilled to join such an outstanding institution and athletic department,” said Tanaka.

“The more I learn about St. Francis and its mission, the more excited I am to be a part of this community.”

Tanaka comes to St. Francis after serving in the sports information office at Elmhurst College for each of the past four years, including one year as a graduate intern following two years as a student assistant.

He has also worked in both independent and collegiate baseball each of the past two summers.

This past summer, Tanaka served as the director of broadcasting and media relations for the Florence Freedom, a member of the Frontier League, the same independent league as that of the Joliet Slammers.

One year earlier, he was a radio broadcaster and media rela-

tions intern for the Battle Creek (Mich.) Bombers of the Northwoods Summer Collegiate Baseball League.

Tanaka was also one of three interns selected nationally to do an internship with KNBR-680 AM in San Francisco, Calif., in 2014, assisting with the production of SportsPhone 680 and the San Francisco Giants postgame shows during the Giants’ run to the World Series title.

“We are excited to have Luke join our staff,” stated Laketa. “He brings a lot of talents to the position, especially in the areas of social media, broadcasting and

promotion of the program.

“We believe he has a great career ahead of him in the profession and are keen on watching his development in the coming years.”

Tanaka graduated from Elmhurst College in 2015, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary communications. He also minored in both English and math.

Research will help with salary negotiations DEAR DAVE, I’ve accepted a promotion that would take me from an hourly wage to a salaried position. Do you have any advice for negotiating a salary?

J DEAR J, The quick and simple answer to this question is you negotiate it based on what you’re worth to the company. Now, how do you figure that out? There are a couple of measuring sticks you can use. One is associated with the revenue you bring in, and that’s a nice, concrete reference.

Another thing you can do is research some of the more reputable career websites and develop a compensation study based on comparable positions in your area.

If you’re a valuable team member of mine who’s moving from hourly to salary, it wouldn’t be a “negotiation” — it would be a discussion.

Honestly, most positions are priced initially at the amount you can be

replaced for in the new role.

In other words, what’s the going rate for someone in your position?

If it were me, I’d produce two or three well-researched compensation studies. Give them to your bosses, and talk it through with them. Depending on the size of the company, they may not have done that much work figuring it out themselves.

It’s kind of like deciding what to ask for when you sell a car. You try to appraise it for what it’s worth in the marketplace to other people.

That’s the way you have a discussion. It’s not that you’re telling them what to do or presenting an ultimatum, you’re asking questions and presenting information. If someone did that in my office with a respectful and professional manner, it would go a long way.

County recognized for helping homeless vets Success attributed to local and federal partnerships The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs has confirmed that the Will County Continuum of Care has effectively ended homelessness among veterans in the county.

“I am proud of the collaborative effort in Will County that is working towards ending homelessness for all of our veterans,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “These veterans have made large sacrifices to protect our freedom and our nation. The very least we can do is assist them

in finding permanent housing.”

Matthew Doherty, executive director of the USICH, sent a letter to Will County officials acknowledging the success of the Joliet, Bolingbrook/Will County Continuum of Care in ensuring any veteran in Will County who is experiencing homelessness receives help to find permanent housing. He commended the infrastructure and systems the continuum has built to ensure any veteran experiencing homelessness in Will County quickly gets the support needed to find a permanent home.

“Through partnership and perseverance, Will County has become the 50th community in the nation to end veteran homelessness,” said Doherty “The lessons we learn from communities like Will County are helping us end homelessness for veterans nationwide.”

The Will County Continuum of

Care is led by Will County Center for Community Concerns. The Continuum has a broad membership, including the following partners: the Will County Land Use Department, the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet, Edward Hines Jr. VA Healthcare for Homeless Veterans/HUD VASH, Family and Friends Grant and Per Diem, Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission, Joliet Police Department, Joliet Public Library, Joliet Neighborhood Services, Kendall County Veterans Assistance Commission, Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, Morning Star Mission, Cornerstone Services, Inc. In 2016, 59 Veterans were connected to permanent housing in the local community, averaging 58 days of homelessness. Since the beginning of 2017, 45 Veterans have been connected to permanent housing in the county.
