Luau-themed event raises funds for Special Rec Close to $5,000 raised for Lily Cache Special Recreation Association

A Hawaiian luau at the Bolingbrook Park District’s Pelican Harbor Saturday brought the community together in record numbers to support special recreation.

Barefoot Hawaiian entertained the crowd with authentic Hawaiian cultural music, dance and fire dancing for the event.

Guests were invited to enjoy the park district’s water park and take in the show, all while supporting

the Lily Cache Special Recreation Association.

The event raised its largest amount to date, nearly $5,000, to support the group. The Lily Cache Special Recreation Association represents a partnership between Bolingbrook and Plainfield park districts in their mission to serve the special needs population.

The proceeds will benefit LCSRA’s scholarship fund, which helps individuals with disabilities attend programming they may normally not be able to afford.

“We were extremely pleased with the outcome of the Luau this year. With the money raised,

we can further provide quality programming to participants with special needs, “ said Jill Mukushina, manager of special

recreation at LCSRA. “To our staff, everyone that came to the event, donated money and raffles prizes, we are beyond grateful for your support and are looking forward to next year.”

The group’s mission is to

provide recreational programs that build self-esteem and promote a lifetime of growth.

LCSRA strives to go beyond the normal range of services and programs offered by schools or other agencies.

Romeoville development continues Ongoing projects begin to take shape By laura katauskas staff reporter

Construction of both commercial and industrial can be seen throughout Romeoville as the village continues to expand, announcing an additional $200 million in development.

Ongoing projects like the new 10,000 square foot Fat Ricky’s restaurant and Franconi’s grocery store on Route 53 are taking shape, with completion expected in the fall. Adjacent to it is a new shopping center to be anchored by BMO Harris bank.

Romeoville has added more than $120 million in commercial and industrial development this year alone and at its past village board meeting, officials reviewed 60,000 square feet of commercial with

a total investment of $21 million and 1.33 million square feet of industrial with a total investment of $179 million.

One of the projects highlighted include a wine bar and gaming, Lucky Penny’s, in that retail section of the Route 66 Plaza on Phelps and Route 53.

Further along Route 53 at the northwest corner of Romeo Road, which has been 10.7 acres of open land, the development of a Thorntons Gas station was approved with future retail and restaurants expected.

“We are definitely busy. We continue to see an incredible amount of new construction in both the commercial and industrial sectors,” said Mayor John Noak.

The village board also approved the development of 83 acres commonly known as the “Lambrecht Property” at the

intersection of Route 53 and Joliet Road. Abbott Land Gateway LLC will own and develop the property.

The proposal included the annexation of 77 acres. The final development plan will include a variety of uses consistent with surrounding properties, including industrial and manufacturing.

A travel center, restaurant and a convenience store are also included in the approved plan.

“The development of this property is long overdue. The anticipated road improvements will provide a great opportunity for redevelopment of this entire portion of the Illinois 53 corridor,” said Noak.

Upon completion of the project, the developer will complete more than $4 million in road improvements at Route 53 and Joliet Road, including an internal road that will extended through the site to the south property line, linking to Enterprise Drive.

Along the Weber Road corridor,

the walls of the Blain’s Farm and Fleet store are up and the construction of the 122,000 square foot store and seven retail outlots is well underway on 29 acres located at the southeast corner of Weber Road and Airport Road. Blain’s Farm and Fleet expects to open its store this fall.

Just behind the new farm store, one of Romeoville’s largest industrial partners is building a 416,500 square foot speculative building at the southwest corner of Taylor Road and Southcreek Parkway.

Construction is almost complete on the 28,000 square foot Presence Senior Health Pavilion and Family Immediate Care Center located on Weber Road, in front of Sam’s Club at Romeoville Crossings. The facility is scheduled to open in August.

Adding to the Weber Road line up is Thomas Toyota, a first for Romeoville, bringing in a car dealership to the mix. The nearly

47,000 square foot state-of-theart building to be located at the southwest corner of Weber Road and Grand Haven Circle will include a showroom, sales area, service areas and office space.

Village officials worked with Toyota representatives on the potential impact of lighting and traffic on the nearby area and according to the village the approved lighting is significantly less compared to their existing location in Joliet and consistent with the standards recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

“We are very excited Thomas Toyota has chosen Romeoville for their new location. We look forward to breaking ground soon,” said Noak.

Construction is anticipated to begin this fall.

In addition, a concept plan for a new 140,000 square foot warehouse building by DCT at 5 Greenwood, the former National Fiberglass site and Venture One Acquisitions, LLC is proposing a 285,318 square foot speculative warehousing/ industrial building for the vacant land north of the Kehe Building on Schmidt Road.

Valley View names new administration Several new administrators will be taking over the reins at schools within the Valley View School District this year. The school board recently approved the following hires.

VVSD administrator named principal of Bolingbrook HS Jane Addams Middle School principal Jason Pascavage has been named principal of Bolingbrook High School effective immediately.

The Bolingbrook resident succeeds Yolanda Jordan, who has taken a district-level position as Director of Leadership Development for East Aurora School District 131.

Pascavage, who joined the Valley View School District 365U team as assistant principal at Brooks Middle School in 2006, has been Principal at Jane Addams for three years. He is also a former Director of VVSD’s Summer Learning Experience.

Known for his enthusiasm and love for his job, Pascavage often tells people being a principal and teacher in a school are the “most noble” positions you can have.

His personal philosophy centers entirely on treating his students like they were his own children.

Pascavage obtained his Bachelor in Education from the Montana University system, he holds a Masters in Education from Arizona State University and a Masters in Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix, and has completed his studies in special education at Lewis University.

Pascavage obtained his Doctorate in educational leadership from National Louis University.

PriortocomingtoVVSD,Pascavage taught middle school math and was a high school basketball coach in Phoenix, Arizona. Pascavage was born and raised in Butte, Montana and is the son of Butte natives Renee Pascavage and Judge Ben Pezdark.

Humphrey administrator named assistant principal at Bolingbrook HS Humphrey Middle School assistant principal Lisa Allen has been named an assistant principal at Bolingbrook High School effectively immediately.

She will serve as assistant principal of school improvement and will oversee VVSD’s Phoenix Experience, replacing Christine Ruddy who is now Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction at BHS. Allen has been with VVSD since 2011 serving as an enhancement teacher and dean of students at Jane Addams Middle School and principal of the district’s ESY summer program. She joined

the Humphrey team as assistant principal in 2013.

Allen came to VVSD with four years of teaching experience and seven years of experience as an administrator, including 3 years as Principal of an alternative magnet school in Temple, Texas, and two years as Principal of Wood Oaks Junior High School in Northbrook, IL. A graduate of Texas Christian University with a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education and math, she holds a Master’s Degree in education administration from the University of Texas-Austin.

Elva Corona named assistant director of bilingual education A veteran Valley View School District 365U bilingual teacher has been named VVSD’s assistant director of bilingual education.

B.J. Ward Elementary School Student Resource Team Leader and Interventionist Elva Corona will begin her duties immediately, succeeding Yadira Mendoza who left the district to take a position with another school district.

Corona joined the VVSD team in 2004 as a bilingual teacher at Valley View Elementary School (now the VVSD Administration Center and Early Childhood Center) before serving in various positions including a bilingual teacher, ESL teacher and bilingual supported education resource teacher at Beverly Skoff Elementary School for 10 years. She moved to the B.J. Ward position last year.

A graduate of the University of St. Francis with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, she holds Master’s Degrees in Teaching and Learning as well as Educational Leadership from USF as well.

Corona has been involved in a variety of school and district-level activities during her career, including the development of a standardsbased report card, the piloting of several bilingual reading series, creation of a bilingual intervention program and the creation of an ELL reporting tool to assess students’ language acquisition.

New VVSD website portal designed with parents in mind Valley View School District 365U Student Services Department has created a new parent portal on the VVSD website.

The portal, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, includes information on the state-required child sexual abuse prevention program known as Erin’s Law, information on VVSD’s antibullying program known as Sprigeo, a summary of VVSD’s efforts to follow guidelines set forth by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education regarding transgender students, VVSD’s Community Resource Guide, and links to a variety of community, statewide and national parental assistance resources.

The Erin’s Law portal details requirements that all public schools in Illinois to provide age appropriate prevention-oriented child sexual abuse recognition programs to children in grade Pre K through 12.

The Sprigeo portal utilizes videos to help parents understand how to recognize and report incidents of bullying.

The Community Resource Fair Guide contains hundreds of local and regional contacts for a myriad of family-related services.

The information regarding transgender students includes a

letter from VVSD Superintendent James Mitchem reiterating VVSD’s commitment to preserve the dignity and safety of all of its students.

Additional resources on the parent portal include links to information on homework, legal rights, Attention Deficit Disorder, hyperactivity, and success in school as well as links to such groups as the National Center for Learning Disabilities, the National Down Syndrome Society, the Parent Advocacy Coalition, Mental Health America, the National Association for the Education of African American Children With Learning Disabilities and more.

It’s hard to believe, but we’re halfway through the year – how are your New Year’s resolutions coming along? Was one of them to lose weight?

It may not quite be what you had in mind, but if you’re trying to shed a few pounds, one quick and easy way to do that is to clean out the purse, wallet, briefcase and/or tote bag you’ve been lugging around. Besides lightening your load, it will make the things you carry with you every day more organized and easy to find.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to the process: empty it out Dump the contents of your purse, wallet, bag or briefcase into a shoebox or other container so nothing gets lost. toss the trash Toss the obvious items: used or tattered tissues, old makeup, mysterious scraps of paper, gum or mints that are coated with lint, ATM receipts that are so old you can no longer read them, etc.

sort the rest Divide items between those you need to carry all the time (keys, sunglasses, cell phone, pen, notepad, etc.) and those that are questionable – although any one item may not take up much space or add much weight, collectively these items can have a big impact: makeup Maybe you can just carry your lipstick, and keep the rest of your touch-up items at work so you don’t have to schlep them back and forth from home each day.

Loose change Unless you’re saving it for a serendipitous encounter with a slot machine, put the loose change that’s accumulated at the bottom of your purse or bag into your wallet or pants pocket where you can use it, or into a jar at home if you want to save it.

Checkbook If you only write checks occasionally, maybe you can carry just a check or two

in your wallet.

Coupons Clean out expired coupons, and consider whether you need to carry the others with you – maybe you can keep store coupons in your car’s glove compartment and grocery coupons at home. receipts Clean out receipts once a week at a minimum. Unless you’re about to return something and need the receipt, you don’t need to have them with you. Establish a place where you can collect them and find them when you need them. organize what’s left Rather than just tossing everything back in your purse or bag, try to compartmentalize or containerize it – this will make it easier to find things, and also make it easier to move items from one purse to another.

Clean it out regularly Empty out loose change, receipts and random bits of paper every day, if possible, or once a week at a minimum.

Many wondered what Downers Grove North star athlete Jaida Green would do for an encore her senior year.

The Penn State-bound basketball player and 2015 Voyager Media Female Multisport Athlete of the Year had one more basketball season to showcase her talent and was competing in the high jump for the second year.

All she did was improve upon her previous year in both sports, averaging 17.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and won a state high jump title.

For her accomplishments, Green is the repeat winner of the Voyager Media Female Multisport Athlete of the Year.

In basketball, not only did Green showcase herself on offense or on the boards, she was a dominant defensive player as well with her length. She finished the year with 54 steals and 63 blocks, a rare feat to be dominant in both defensive statistics.

She then proved her athletic prowess by high jumping her way to a state title, jumping 5-feet, 7-inches, after placing third last year with a jump of 5-6.

It is only the second year she came out for track and field.

Some may say there are many similarities between the two sports, but the technicality of the high jump makes it quite different.

Her success in the sport will only help her when playing for Penn State in the fall.

“I think the high jump is so different from basketball,” Green said. “In basketball, you are just refining your skills. In high jump, I really knew nothing so it was fun to come out and learn a new sport. Being able to calm your nerves in the high jump can help me transfer it to basketball, too.”

The rest of the top multisport athletes, by zone, are:

On the hardwood she was an all-area selection, averaging 9.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.3 assists per game for the Hawks, leading the team in scoring and steals.

“Throughout her four years in our program, no one worked harder on her game than Riley Eckhart,” Maine South coach Mark Smith said. “Her tireless efforts helped her become one of the premier shooters in the

Hard work, passion pave DeJoria’s way through NHRA

When race fans watched female drivers like Courtney and Brittany Force scream down the pavement at Joliet’s Route 66 Raceway at the NHRA Nationals, there is no surprise that the two are in the sport, because after all, they are the daughters of John Force, an NHRA legend and they just joined the family business.

The plan for Alexis DeJoria was also to join the family business – her father is John Paul DeJoria – the billionaire co-founder of Paul Mitchell and majority owner of Patron Spirits – but at age 16 DeJoria found a passion to drive.

“I worked for the family business right out of high school for four years and that was the initial plan,” she said. “But when I was 16 I went to a drag race for the first time – the Winternationals in Pomona – and I just fell in love with the cars and it was something that was just in the back of my mind that someday I have something I really want to do.

I have no family that has raced, so for me to do something like this is completely out of left field. I had no experience whatsoever except for the hot rods we raced around when I was a teenager in high school and I think that was where the love of motorsports and American hot rods came into play.

“After four years, I was so obsessed with the sport and I really wanted to give it a try. I went to Frank Hawley’s Drag Racing School and got licensed and found an old, used Super Gas Corvette bracket car that was for sale and basically used all my savings to buy that car and start a little team. It was basically just me and a family friend that could drive a big rig and kind of work on a car. I just threw myself into the mix and tried to make it happen and move up through the ranks and now I am exactly where I wanted to be. I welcome the challenge. These cars are intense.

You are never just taking a ride. You are always in control of that car.”

While many may assume the road was easy for DeJoria and that her father simply wrote a check and got her into a car – that couldn’t be further from the truth.

She also competed in the throwing events for the track and field team, finishing in fourth place in both events at the CSL South meet.

BROOKLYN BACHMANN, JOLIET/SHOREWOOD Minooka junior was a rare three-sport athlete and excelled in all three of them.

In the spring, she was a state qualifier in the pole vault, clearing 10-feet in the Friday preliminaries.

In the winter, Bachmann was the floor leader of the Indians from the point guard position and led the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game. She also shot 73 percent from the foul and

had 83 assists.

“Brooklyn’s ability to score in so many ways makes her such a dangerous offensive weapon,” Minooka basketball coach Ray Liberatore said after her allarea selection. “We have won 60 games the past three seasons with Brooklyn as our starting point guard and her quickness makes her attractive to college basketball coaches.”

In the fall, Bachmann was the setter on the Indians’ volleyball squad where she posted 848 assists, an average of 9.7 assists per game. She also tallied 165 digs, 22 kills and 10 service aces.

LOTA ONUA, PLAINFIELD The junior from Plainfield East was a third team all-area

basketball selection, averaging 11.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and had 84 steals.

“I could count on her every game to give maximum effort and score in double digits and get close to double digit rebounds, despite teams keying on her,” East basketball coach Anthony Wazonis said. “Not only did she lead the team in scoring and rebounding, but also had our most steals (by 22). Helped lead a turnaround from a 10-win season to an 18-win season and making a regional final. In games where teams keyed on her as well she would be the first to share the ball and often have five assists in those games.”

In track, Onua advanced to the finals of the triple jump in ninth place with a distance of 37-9.

Her distance was passed in an opponent’s final jump, leaving her one place out of the medal stand in 10th.

SKYE OSBORNE, VALLEY VIEW Basketball and softball standout from Romeoville, the senior was a staple in both sports all four years as a Spartan.

This season, she was named to the Voyager Media All-Area softball team, as she posted a .436 batting average to go with four home runs, eight doubles, five triples and 22 RBI. On the basketball court, she was the Spartans’ court leader and averaged 5.76 points per game to go along with 2.55 assists and 1.95 assists per contest.

“It was not like I wanted to be a football player,” she said. “These cars don’t know male from female – it is not like basketball or baseball where you have to separate the two. In these cars, it is everybody’s game out here. At the time I started, there were a few females racing in the pro ranks that I followed very closely and so when I came in it wasn’t a shock. It was more like ‘here’s another one, let’s see what she can do.’ But, the pressure is on.

You do feel more pressure than if a guy is starting out in the league because you have more eyes on you.”

Of all the motorsports circuits, the NHRA has by far the most female drivers and several of them are among the sport’s elite drivers.

“NASCARandIndyCardidn’thave someone like Shirley Muldowney,”

DeJoria said. “They didn’t have a female that came in and did really well and won championships. If NASCAR had a girl like that, you would see a lot more than Danica Patrick driving those. IndyCar has had a few females and that is probably next in line – but it is all about the women that paved the way before us. And now, about 40 percent of the Junior Dragster League is female, so that is our future.”

DeJoria took advantage of the doors that were opened for her by the likes of Muldowney and she rose through the NHRA ranks and in 2011 she joined the Kalitta Motorsports team as their fourth member and second Funny Car driver.

In 2014, her third season in a Funny Car, DeJoria became the first woman ever to make a

sub-four second run, posting a 3.997-second ET at the same NHRA Winternationals in Pomona where she saw her first race.

At the next race, DeJoria earned her first Funny Car win and then grabbed her second category win in Las Vegas later that year. Her third career win came in September of 2014 at the 60th U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.

Last season, DeJoria did not earn a win, but did end up in the top 10 in the points standing and grabbed her first win this season in Las Vegas in April.

“Our car is a lot better this year, we have new chassis this year and they are more consistent and we are able to apply power where we need it and it has been working out really well for us,” she said.

“There have been some changes performance wise to the funny

car class in general – headers, injectors, fuel systems, changes in how we run the clutch, just a number of things that have added more horsepower and more thrust.

We are all running record numbers.

Every time we go to a track this year, we are breaking the track record for sure and sometimes the world records are being broken as well and everyone is resetting their own records. It has been incredible thus far this year and we are only about half way done, so there is a lot more to do.”

That second win will have to wait at least a couple more weeks, as she was eliminated by Robert Hight in the second round of Sunday’s finals.

She currently sits in 10th place in Funny Car standings, 371 points behind category leader Ron Capps who was second in Joliet.

Recognizing the power of a woman and her ambitions, a local business owner is spearheading a new free roundtable discussion for women in business.

“So You Think You Want to Be In Business,” a new monthly Women in Business Roundtable will kick off its first meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 19 at the Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook.

Greathouse explains that “So You Think You Want To Be In Business” is a women’s roundtable discussion that helps entrepreneurs develop business skills in a supportive and empowering environment.

guy; who freely offers guidance needed to facilitate growth,” said Greathouse.

Greathouse also hosts a monthly entrepreneurial women’s book club (that goes on hiatus for the summer) at the library, essentially opening the door for two “trial” roundtables.

“In a nutshell, the roundtable was coordinated as an information sharing platform to address and mitigate the barriers to success women face,” said Greathouse.

“The overarching goal is strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem by encouraging women (either in or contemplating business

ownership) to bring their innovative ideas to market as a means to create value and solve problems.”

The idea is to have an open semi-structured discussion to hear and answer attendees questions.

The roundtable is open to participants who are currently in business as well as those who are seeking to start a business.

Wine, fine art converge during Taste of Bolingbrook Arts Council commission is bringing a new wine-themed idea to community festival The Bolingbrook Arts Council commission is bringing a new idea to Bolingbrook’s annual food festival.

The group is excited to present “The Art of Wine” from 4-8 p.m.

Sat., July 23 at The Promenade, 631 E. Boughton Road, during the Taste of Bolingbrook.

“We are partnering with two amazing fine artists, Cliff Harman and Krystyna Kozyuk, to celebrate the intersection of wine and art,” said Phyllis Erickson, commission chairperson.

“Purchase a tasting ticket and

savor samples poured by wide variety of vendors while Krystyna and Cliff are painting en plein air for entertainment and education.”

The finished work will be raffled off giving Taste-goers a chance to win a one-of-a-kind piece celebrating the beauty of wine.

In his short art career, he has won awards, including a congressional award presented by the US House of Representatives and has had work displayed in the White House.
