BOLINGBROOK PARK DISTRICT

District explores Century Park expansion Community members give feedback and ideas to what they want to see in the future for Century Park BY RYAN OSTRY Bugle Staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com The Bolingbrook Park District held a community meeting at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex to further discuss the development plans on Century Park. Century Park was built in 2000, with the open space land acquisition and development was stalled because a grant that was just missed in 2014. “The state froze all grants so we didn’t go back in 2015 through 2018,” Executive Director Ron Oesteich said. “They just opened up the grant cycle

again with the new budget so when we saw that we jumped on it to hopefully bring Century Park up.” Now, the open space at 1675 Apple Valley Drive in Bolingbrook has a playground and soccer fields, but adding 60 to 70 trees among other amenities are the focus going forward. Pathways, accessibility items and features that will make the park more interactive for everyone was the topic among some of the community members, with wheel chair accessibility also being a top priority. “The people want to see things that are accessible and wheel chair acces-

Depending on the state grant cycle, if it goes through, then the planning will come to fruition. “The cycle ends where they make decisions in January,” Oesteich said. “If we’re successful where we get to the point of a presentation, then we would present in December at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).” When traveling to the IDNR, Oesteich and others who present will have five minutes to state their case, and then will wait to hear back to see if the grant is awarded to them in January.

“If everything goes well we hope to all be designing this more towards 2020 or 2021,” Oesteich said. Even though that Century Park is the only park that will be completely renovated for the entirety, the Bolingbrook Park District will also be replacing 21 playgrounds over the next five years due to the pass of the recent referendum. “This year we’re doing four playgrounds which will be pretty cool,” Oesteich said. “Next year we will do some of the older parks that we will be replacing, but I’m glad we’re finally able to do this now.”

Help friend with what he needs, not what he wants Q. I’m on Baby Step 2 of your plan, and I’ll be debt-free except for my home by the end of the year. I have a friend who is very irresponsible with his money, and he often asks to “borrow” cash between paychecks. I don’t want to be cruel, but things are getting out of hand with his requests for money. A. I think you should tell your friend the truth. Let him know you’ve decided to get control of your money, you’re trying to get out of debt and you sim-

ply don’t have cash to spare. Be sure to do it with a kind spirit, but sometimes you’ve got to look at the big picture in these situations. You’re not really helping someone if you participate in their misbehavior and enable bad habits. Sometimes, you have to love someone enough to tell them no. Let your friend know how hard you’re working to get your finances in order and how it’s making a big difference in your life. Maybe you could offer to show him the steps you’ve taken so far, and let him know he could be successful doing this, too. You might even try to show him how to make a monthly budget and act as his guide and accountability partner if he’s will-

ing to accept this kind of help. In some cases, helping someone means offering what you know they need instead of what they want. But you’re never really helping someone who’s incompetent with money by simply handing them cash. GLVC sponsors bowling along with lacrosse beginning this season

A day after revealing women’s lacrosse as its 23rd sponsored sport, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Wednesday it will begin sponsoring women’s bowling as its 24th sport for the upcoming year. The inaugural season of GLVC women’s bowling will feature seven institutions, including full-time league members Drury University, Lewis University, Maryville University and McKendree University, as well as associate members University of Central Missouri, Lincoln University and Upper Iowa University. Five of the seven aforementioned programs – Central Missouri, Drury, Lincoln, Maryville and McKendree – competed under the banner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) over the course of the last three seasons. McKendree has reached the final match of the Intercollegiate

Team Championship in each of the past three seasons. Under the direction of head coach Shannon O’Keefe, the Bearcats earned the national title in 2017, scored a runner-up finish in 2018, and was edged 3-2 in the 2019 title match by Robert Morris University (Ill.) this past April. One month prior to nationals, McKendree swept Central Missouri 4-0 to claim its second consecutive MIAA Championship.

It was a successful first season for the Lewis Flyers as they finished the 2018-19 campaign ranked No. 37 in the NCAA RPI, brought home two runner-up trophies from NCAA tournaments and made match play at a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) tournament. Head coach Scott Taylor enters his second season directing the Flyers. Larry Hughes has served as the

head coach at Drury for all four years of the program history, including the last three under the NCAA banner. He guided the Panthers to third place at the MIAA Championships in 2017, followed by a pair of fourth-place results the past two seasons. Drury will compete in the GLVC’s inaugural season in memory of teammate Caroline Conrad, who tragically passed away in an auto accident last week. All seven programs will advance to the inaugural GLVC Bowling

Championship, which will take place at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville, Illinois, March 21-22, 2020. In addition, Quincy University announced last month it will add both men’s and women’s bowling beginning with the 2020-21 academic year. For more information on GLVC women’s bowling, stay tuned online at GLVCsports.com and @ GLVCsports (#GLVCwbowl) on Twitter throughout the year.
