A far cry from the teenage girl who couldn’t speak in front of the class without getting sick, 2015

Miss USA Olivia Jordan brought her inspirational message to area seniors during a visit to Senior Star Weber Place in Romeoville June 23. Drawing on her experience advocating for Alzheimer’s awareness, Jordan also discussed the importance of self-confidence in girls.

Jordan, who recently ended her whirlwind tour as Miss USA 2015, is now touring and speaking in various communities that have supported research for Alzheimer’s disease; thanking them for their endeavors.

Growing up in a home environment that encouraged an advocacy and philanthropic mindset, Jordan observed and learned how the power of a voice can positively impact critical issues like the fight against Alzheimer’s – a cause where her family name is widely recognized.

Her father, Robert Thomas, is cofounder and co-owner of 14 Senior Star senior living communities in the U.S., many of which provide innovative programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

“My parents raised us to believe that if you see a problem, you become part of the solution,” said Jordan.

Senior Star’s Alzheimer’s initiative ranked them third nationally in fundraising for the 2015 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising more than $500,000 with a

little more than 1,200 employees.

Locally, Senior Star’s Romeoville facility was the top fundraiser in the area.

From an early age, Jordan began pursuing a career in modeling and acting – one that she admits caused a lot of self doubt. She was candid about being a young impressionable girl who was shy about her height, and told her hips were too big and her skin too old. Though chipping away at her self confidence quietly, she took those words in stride, and it wasn’t until she reached the pageantry world that a shift occurred.

“At some point, we all feel or are told we are not smart enough, not tall enough, not thin enough, not kind enough,” Jordan said.

“I wish I knew then that all of us are human and as humans we are perfectly imperfect.”

After being named Miss Beverly Hills, she was asked to speak at an engagement and soon after she saw the “ripple effect,” as she calls it.

“I had never done any public speaking, and all of a sudden there was this call to action,” Jordan said. “All of a sudden, I had a voice, and I needed to do something positive with it.”

She recalled feeling a sense of empowerment by being able to use her voice on the Miss USA circuit to make change, speaking on topics from ovarian cancer to human trafficking.

Valley View to expand early childhood Administrative staff will be relocated By laura katauskas staff reporter

Plans are underway to relocate the majority of the Valley View School District 365u administrative staff, making way for a planned expansion of its Early Childhood Center.

The school district will be entering into a lease agreement with Para Romeoville LLC to rent a strip center, currently sitting vacant at 801 Normantown Road and directly west of the center, a vacant lot at 646 Michigan Drive.

The move allows for the Early Childhood Center to be expanded by up to 12 additional classrooms in what is currently the entire first floor of the Administrative Center.

“There has been a pent-up need for early childhood services and this has been on our radar for years,” said Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi.

He said assuming 15 students per classroom and half-day sessions, the early childhood expansion could serve an additional 360 students from within the district’s communities. The district plans to pursue additional state funding

through increased PreK Expansion grant funding.

It is anticipated the expanded Early Childhood Center would be ready for the 2017-18 school year.

The draft lease agreement sets monthly base rent at $10 per square foot for the 26,670 square foot facility for a 25-year lease with renewal periods every five years.

The lot at 646 Michigan Drive is currently zoned for residential. The district intends to reach out to the neighbors in the community and would be working with the village to rezone and use for possible parking.

The draft lease also states the property owner would be responsible for roof repair and HVAC maintenance and the rebuilding of the parking lot. The funding would come from the district’s operational budget and factored in each year.

It is the first time, the school district will be renting a building, but due to the attractiveness of the site, which is centrally located and fits the district’s needs, Grizaffi said the move would be a benefit.

“Do we want to have a $260,000 rent payment, no, but it is necessary--our community needs the service,” said Grizaffi.

Approximately 75 staff members are to be relocated to what would become a newly built-out Administrative Center. Build-out costs, to be incurred by the property owner, if done with a combination of in-house labor and selective outsourced contracting, could be completed for an estimated $150 to 175 per square feet. The move is anticipated for November.

The areas of Educational Services, including Professional Development and Data and Assessment, Human Resources, and Administrative Services will be relocated, leaving only Technology Services to remain on the second floor of the current Administration Center.

Will County Board approves 2 new electronics recycling sites New Lenox Township, village of Peotone to collect electronics twice a month The Will County Board approved two intergovernmental agreements to add electronic recycling drop off sites in New Lenox Township and the Village of Peotone.

The move comes in response to the county abruptly losing its longtime vendor back in March.

“Electronic recycling is an issue for residents in my district who have been asking for help in finding a solution, and I’m pleased we now have a real option for them again,” county board member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, said.

“Quite frankly, it’s a shame there are not more places to dispose of these types of products in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

For many years, it was a tough sell to get people to recycle anything, and now many are mindful of what they send to landfills but are faced with limited recycling options for electronics.”

In March, the county lost its electronics recycling vendor, forcing the board to find alternatives to meet the recycling demand fulfilled by its previous 13 drop-off sites.

Since March, only one recycling site has been available at the Lockport Public Works Department, 17112 Prime Blvd. Residents from any Will County community can use any of the three collection sites.

Lockport’s site is open Tuesday and Friday from 6-11 a.m. The village of Peotone’s site is located at the Peotone Police Department, 269 N. Main St., and open the first and third Wednesday of each month from 5-7 p.m. A collection site at the New Lenox Township Office, 1090 S. Cedar Road, is open the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 5-7 p.m. Electronic Recyclers International, the county’s new vendor, hauls away everything collected.

Village encourages residents to leave fireworks to pros Police to dole out fines for illegal firework use By laura katauskas staff reporter

The Romeoville Police Department is warning residents that the dangers of fireworks are real and are taking action to help keep the community safe.

In light of increasing complaints by neighbors and an unfortunate accident last year that left a child injured last year, Police Chief Mark Turvey said the department is

trying to continue to educate the public while cracking down on illegal fireworks.

“People don’t really realize the danger or the disruption it places on the community,” said Turvey.

“People die every year from firework use--we had a horrible incident some ten years back when someone was killed in Romeoville because of fireworks. The danger is real.”

Every year, non-occupational fireworks lead to numerous injuries and deaths. In a 2015 study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 11 people die each year from non-occupational fireworks. Fireworks related deaths are often the cause of unplanned detonations, direct impacts, or

fires.

In Romeoville, it is unlawful for any person to possess, display or allow to be displayed, consumer fireworks and/or display fireworks or any other fireworks within the corporate limits of the village without a valid permit. Possession is not the only concern when it comes to fireworks. A person setting off fireworks can be charged with disorderly conduct if it is alarming and disturbing others. Of a more serious nature, one may be held criminally liable if negligent acts result in property damage, injury, or death. The Romeoville Police Department maintains a strict enforcement policy with regards to illegal fireworks and dedicates officers solely to the enforcement of fireworks violations during the July 4th holiday season.

“We are being realistic--we know fireworks are not going to go away,” said Turvey. “However, if we see someone with fireworks, the fireworks will be confiscated and if people are not cooperative, action will be taken.”

A resident can be issued a citation for violating a village ordinance, carrying a fine of up to $750.

Despite the fact that fireworks are legal in Indiana, fireworks are illegal in the State of Illinois. Turvey said it is up to the discretion of each state and that Illinois happens to be one of the strictest states on fireworks

policies.

Items such as “Silver Salutes” or “Quarter Sticks” are considered explosive devices and possession is a Class 3 felony.

Turvey encourages residents to take advantage of the professional fireworks shows in the area.

The village of Romeoville will be performing an Independence Day fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. July 3 at Deer Crossing Park, 1050 Romeo Road.

According to the police department, about 67 percent of the annual 10,500 fireworks related injuries occur between June 20 and

July 20, with 35 percent affecting children younger than 15. Fireworks injuries and deaths can be from misuse or malfunctions. Some common misuses include lighting fireworks in one’s hand, being too close to lit fireworks, setting off fireworks improperly, mischief, igniting fireworks too close to someone, or dismantling fireworks.

Malfunctions can be from errant flight paths, tip-over incidents, early ignitions, and blow outs.

Police also remind that even legal items, such as sparklers, which burn hot enough to melt glass, are dangerous.

Elementary school students who register during the mail-in period from July 1 to July 22 are not required to come to August Back-To-School registration days. However all middle school and high school students must come to August Back-To-School registration even if they registered by mail because they must pick up their student IDs, schedules and locker assignments.

The district will require all

students, regardless of grade level, to provide proof that they are residents of the district before they will be allowed to register for classes. The verification process is simple if a student’s address or guardianship has not changed from the past school year.

A parent or guardian must provide their own photo ID and one of the following documents to prove residency: 1) signed lease for the current school year with the name of the parent or guardian, a landlord’s signature and a contact phone number; 2) mortgage statement for the current (most recent) month or the 2015 Will County property tax bill; 3) utility bill from the past 30 days in the name of the parent or guardian on it or mail of a business nature (no more than 30 days old) that was sent to the parent or guardian at the home address.

BHS’ Avery, Callahan named to All-State production of ‘Sweeney Todd’ Two Bolingbrook High School students have been selected to participate in the 2017 All-State production of “Sweeney Todd”.

Sophomore Spencer Avery will play the role of Adolfo Pirelli while junior Joe Callahan will be part of the stage crew for the Illinois Theatre Association production that will take place Jan. 5-7 during the Illinois High School Theatre Festival in Champaign.

Half a week into the Orlando tragedy, this reality remains pretty much unacknowledged, as cause-seekers focus on security and ISIS and the specific mental instability of Omar Mateen, who, as the world knows, took 49 precious lives and injured 53 others at the nightclub Pulse in the early hours of June 12.

Was it terrorism? Was it a hate crime?

Apparently there’s a media obsession with categorizing murder. No, this was faux-war, as all our mass killings are, waged by an army of one or two or a few.

And it won’t be the last. Mass killings are part of the social fabric - still shocking, still horrifying, but becoming more and more . . . “normal.”

Tighter security won’t stop them.

Destroying ISIS won’t stop them.

Banning immigrants won’t stop them.

Maybe nothing will - though I don’t believe that. I do believe in karma, which is to say, the idea that what goes around comes around. If we act with violence, violence will come back to us.

Only when the U.S. news media can put its murder stories in a context that includes inner reflection, rather than simply casting about for some external evil to blame - e.g., the killer had a Muslim name, so it must be terrorism - do we have, I believe, a hope of transcending the violent culture we’ve created.

There’s nothing particularly mysterious about this. What goes around usually comes back around in fairly obvious ways. For instance, the day after the killings, Rachel Maddow spent part of her show on MSNBC discussing how Mateen’s fantasy ISIS connection seemingly fit in with the terror organization’s global game plan, quoting an ISIS social media post to its followers in the West: “If you can kill a disbelieving American or European, especially the spiteful and filthy French or an Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever, from the disbelievers waging war, kill him in any manner or way however it may be.”

Maddow described this as a tactical change for ISIS: “Stay where you are in the West and commit attacks there. Kill civilians in your home country.” She also talked about how the U.S. is at war with

Robert C. koehler ISIS and has been “dropping bombs on ISIS targets” in Iraq and Syria since the summer of 2014. She made this point coolly, matter-of-factly, giving no hint that she understood that bombs cause a lot of carnage, often killing everyone in the vicinity, including children. Outrage and grief only entered her voice when her reporting turned to ISIS, because ... my God, what they were promoting was sick beyond belief.

However, their tactical change also struck me as brilliant, in that they had found a way to “drop bombs on Western targets” without having an air force. This was, you might say, improvised shock and awe, borrowing a phrase from the U.S. war machine, which launched a shock-and-awe bombing campaign on Iraq in 2003. The term comes from a 1996 publication by Harlan K. Ullman and James P. Wade, Shock and Awe: Achieving Rapid Dominance: “The intent here,” they wrote, “is to impose a regime of Shock and Awe through delivery of instant, nearly incomprehensible levels of massive destruction directed at influencing society writ large, meaning its leadership and public, rather than targeting directly against military or strategic objectives.”

In March of 2003, the U.S. launched its invasion of Iraq - a.k.a, the Big Mistake - with some 1,700 air sorties over the country that killed thousands of Iraqis.

Out of this monstrous mistake, and all that followed, ISIS eventually emerged, and started striking back. This sort of karma is so obvious, you have to make a serious effort not to notice it.

But the hell Mateen unleashed at the Orlando nightclub hardly reduces to something this simple. His fantasy connection to ISIS may have been no more than a fragment, at best, of his motivation. Like every mass killer, he was deeply, deeply troubled and seething with social grievances - in his case, homophobia, likely permeated with self-hatred.

The only way to protect ourselves from such a person before he’s committed a crime is to create a surveillancesaturated, endlessly suspicious - and, of course, increasingly fortified and armed - social structure, which probably won’t

work anyway, but will surely poison our social bedrock, which is trust.

And as long as the only way we attempt to understand mass murder is on his (or her) own terms, independent of all social context, we will fail to prevent . . . the next one, and the one after that.

The starting place, I think, is to understand that committing mass murder is psychologically the same as waging war. “The defining characteristic of mass murder is not that it’s senseless or random,” I wrote in the wake of the Sandy Hook killings three and a half years ago, “but that the victims (at least some of them) were murdered for purely impersonal reasons. They had significance as symbols, not individuals.”

The murders, in short, are not personal. The killer is employing what’s known as the “principle of social substitutability” - substituting a particular group of people for a general wrong.

“The rampage shooters see themselves as moralistic punishers striking against deep injustice,” Peter Turchin explains in his essay “Canaries in a Coalmine.” “... it is usually a group, an organization, an institution, or the whole society that are held responsible by the killer.”

“On the battlefield,” he wrote, “you are supposed to try to kill a person whom you’ve never met before. You are not trying to kill this particular person, you are shooting because he is wearing the enemy uniform. . . . Enemy soldiers are socially substitutable.”

Under official circumstances, we glorify this sort of behavior. And this glory permeates the American social structure, creating a sort of standing permission for every troubled individual - every potential army of one - to wage war against a self-perceived wrong.

Added to this standing permission is the dumbfounding availability of automatic weapons - and suddenly mass murders happen every couple of months.

Throw in one further irony. Mateen had worked for nine years as a security guard at G4S, the largest security firm in the world, which at one time had charge over the U.S. prison at Guantanamo.

County board approves labor agreement for courthouse, capital projects Three Rivers Construction Alliance is a labor-management cooperative The Will County Board announced that it has approved a “significant labor agreement” with local union contractors that officials say paves the way for timely, cost-effective construction of a new courthouse, sheriff’s office and health department building.

Three Rivers Construction Alliance is a labor-management cooperative made up of representative construction industry organizations in Will, Grundy, Kankakee and Iroquois counties, according to the alliance’s website.

“This agreement is another great milestone for our vital capital projects and represents a true spirit of cooperation and commitment between the board and local union labor,” said Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, chair of the county board’s capital improvements committee. “We are all working together to provide the residents of Will County modern, safe facilities that meet their needs and stand the test of time.”

Construction on the new sheriff’s

office building is expected to begin within the next year, followed by the construction of a new courthouse in downtown Joliet with an anticipated completion date near the end of 2019. A satellite courthouse in a location to-be-determined in the northern part of the county is also planned, as well as a new health department building.

“Will County has some of the finest contractors and craftsman in the entire state, and we are pleased to partner with them in building a better county for generations to come,” Will County Board Speaker Jim Moustis said. “We look forward to getting shovels in the ground soon.”

The current courthouse was built in 1969. County officials say its 23 courtrooms provide insufficient space and security, and do not meet the minimum standards for safety and security as set by the Illinois Supreme Court.

“Taxpayers want assurances that their money is spent and invested wisely on capital projects that are of the highest quality,” said Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, chair of the county board’s finance committee. “The management of labor is a key component to reach this goal, and the Board has now taken the necessary steps to guarantee quality craftsmanship and professional contracting.”

SCORER’S PARADISE Joliet course gives opportunity for low scores

The Joliet Park District features three courses, one of which (Wedgewood) we reviewed last year.

This year we decided to review Inwood Golf Course, located on Rt. 52 and Essington Road. I consider the course the middle course of the three. Wedgewood is much longer, while the other course, Woodruff, is much shorter. Wedgewood is much more open, while Woodruff is much tighter. That makes Inwood more like a middle of the road course.

While it plays tighter than Wedgewood, there is still a lot of room to spray the ball around and that room helped lead me to my career best round when we played.

Despite just hitting one fairway (the first), I was still able to hit eight

Flyers’ McCarthy to serve as assistant coach on National Team Lewis University men’s volleyball associate head coach Matt McCarthy will serve as an assistant coach on the 2016 U.S. Men’s Junior National Team.

The team will compete July 3-11 at the NORCECA U21 Continental Championships in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The USA squad will be competing against Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and Guatemala. The event will serve as a qualification for the 2017 U21 Men’s World Junior Championship.

“I am excited and honored to work with USA Volleyball,” McCarthy said. “Representing your country is always special and it makes it more exciting being an Olympic year.

We have a great group of men and I look forward to see what we can accomplish.”

McCarthy, a Wheaton, Illinois native, was a player on the Men’s Junior National Team in 2005.

The course is a great starter course, but at the same time, is a great course for more skilled golfers to play if they want to see how low they can score.

The cost for 18 holes during the week is $33 for nonresidents ($49 with a cart) and $39 on the weekend ($55 with cart). For full residents, 18 holes with a cart goes from $38 to $43.

I have played the course several times in my life, but the greens when we played them a few weeks ago were faster than I have ever seen them. The course was in pretty good shape throughout, better than some other park district courses we have played.

From the tips, the first hole plays at 396 yards and is a dogleg right.

That is followed by a 327-yard second hole, which features an island green. The drive is tricky as you want to either stay left of the fairway to avoid hitting over the trees, or play far enough to the right of the fairway to hit over the trees, but play a longer shot.

The third hole is a straight 518-

(Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) and junior Amanda Farrough (South Bend, Ind./Clay) have both received CoSIDA Academic All-America Track & Field/Cross Country honors for the 2015-16 season. Cook was named to the Academic All-America First Team, while Farrough garnered Second Team accolades.

Cook, a senior marketing major, owned a 3.64 cumulative grade point average following the Fall ‘15 semester and won a National Championship in the triple jump at the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

She helped Lewis to both the 2016 GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships as she won five out of six possible jumping events, earning her GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year accolades. Cook added an All-America performance in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing fifth overall, helping the Flyers finish fourth overall as a team.

Farrough, a junior nursing major, held a 3.30 cumulative GPA following the Fall ‘15 semester.

She won the 2016 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000-meter run and added another All-America performance in the 3,000-meter run. Farrough collected another All-America finish at the Outdoor Championships with a runner-up showing in the 5,000-meter run. On the conference side, Farrough won the indoor 3,000-meter run, outdoor 5,000-meter run and placed second in the outdoor 1,500-meter run.

During the cross country season, Farrough finished third at both the NCAA Division II National Championship and NCAA Midwest Regional Championship.

She won the GLVC Cross Country Championship, finishing the 6K course in a then, school-record time of 20:51.2.

“For Amber and Amanda to be both National Champions and Academic All-Americans shows that there is no off switch for their work ethic,” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “To be able to balance their student-athlete demands is a tremendous accomplishment.”

yard par-5, but has a very tight fairway leading to the green with a large tree to the left. The fourth hole is a par-3 that plays 183 yards and is a tough up-and-down if you miss right.

Next is the fifth hole, at 394 yards that plays straight. The sixth hole is a dogleg left at 358 yards. Trees guard the dogleg, making it hard to cut off distance, while the fairway curves around 100 yards to the pin, making a long drive go through the fairway.

The seventh hole is 146 yards over water and that is followed by a 502-yard par-5, which is reachable in two, but also has a tight driving area and green. The ninth hole is a slight dogleg left at 362 yards.

The back nine plays at just 35 strokes with three par-3s in the first five holes. The 10th hole is a 195yard par-3 where you have to play over a bunker in front of the green.

The 11th hole is a 500-yard par-5 that doglegs left and is reachable in two if you can carry the creek, which takes a longer drive the farther left you hit you hit your drive.

No. 12 is 175 yards, while 13 is 541 yards and doglegs right. You have to play back over the creek while it

doglegs, making the second shot a difficult layup. The green is also tight with trees and bunkers in the way. The 14th hole is the final par3 at 173 yards as you play back over the creek again. The 15th is 396 yards and goes back over the creek in front of the green. It is a dogleg left that is covered with trees to the left, making it a long approach if on the fairway.

Hole 16 is a sharp dogleg left at 366 yards and almost requires an iron or fairway wood off the tee, unless you want to risk going through/over the trees. The 17th doglegs right and at 353 yards, can lead to a short approach with not much trouble stopping you from carrying the dogleg. The final hole is a straightaway, 295-yard hole, which makes you want to crush your drive near the green and is a definite birdie chance, although you are shooting into a small green.

While this course may not have a lot of trouble, it isn’t as easy as one might think. A bad shot can get you stuck in the woods for a few more shots. The greens are also fairly small for the most part, making iron play crucial. Overall, this is always a fun course to play.

Locals highlight all-area team; Hedgcock POY

Downers Grove South senior Caroline Hedgcock is not only the best softball player in the area, earning the Voyager Media Player of the Year honors, in June she was dubbed the best player in the state as she was awarded the Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year honors.

On the season, the University of Arkansas recruit compiled a 14-1 record in the circle along with a 0.951 ERA, leading the Mustangs (36-4) to a third-place finish in Class 4A. She struck out 131 batters in 95.2 innings pitched, while allowing just 49 hits.

At the plate, Hedgcock batted .549 with 22 home runs and 68 RBI. She posted 10 doubles and scored 59 runs.

“It was amazing,” she said of winning Gatorade POY. “I was really surprised. I really couldn’t have done it without Tim Walsh, my pitching coach from San Diego. He is really helping me with screw knuckleball – the off speed I throw. My team makes it easy to be Gatorade Player of the Year because they play such great defense behind me and work with the bats and bring so much energy to the game that it is easy to come on and want to play.”

That knuckle screwball was a pitch that by design seldom even reached home plate on a fly, but still had batters fanning at thin air where they expected the ball to be.

Catching that pitch may seem like a challenge, but South’s junior receiver Maddison Paladino said Hedgcock’s ability to control the pitch made it dangerous.

“I am so confident in that pitch because Caroline is such a strong pitcher that even if it is a little off, it won’t be so far where I can’t get it,” Palidino said. “It is amazing.

When she won (the Gatorade) award, I was so proud of her and I have been proud of her all year for putting the hard work in because she gives it her all. This has been such a great experience. I really didn’t play a lot last year and to come in and be able to catch such a great pitcher and person was such a great experience. She is so good and such a genuinely good person.”

Someone who has seen Hedgcock grow from the beginning is retiring Mustang’s

coach Ron Havelka.

“She is special and she always stepped up in big games against good competition,” he said. “She was on varsity for four years and she really knows what to do.

People don’t realize is how great of a hitter she really is and she did everything for us that we asked her to do and more. Players like her don’t come around very often.

She is very special and she has been since she was a freshman.”

Hedgcock is the second player from Downers Grove to win the Gatorade Player of the Year honors, following North’s Dale Ryndak, who claimed the award in 2014.

Hedgcock earned comparison to Ryndak from her former coach.

“She is a great pitcher,” North coach Eric Landschoot said of Hedgcock. “She throws hard, she hits her spots and she has great off speed stuff and then at the plate, she hits a lot. She reminds me a lot Dale Ryndak, who was the Gatorade Player of the Year two years ago. Just the competitiveness she brings and her knowledge of the game and the way she gets her teammates up. knows how to pitch to good hitters. She knows hitters’ strengths and weaknesses and she knows how to go at them and that will take her far at the next level, too.”

The rest of the Voyager Media All-Area Softball team consists of:

KRISTEN AMES Joliet West junior shortstop batted .455 with 23 stolen bases for the Tigers.

KRISTEN BIALEK A senior from Downers South, Bialek batted .427 with 56 hits in 131 at bats. She had 47 runs scored and 18 RBI from the leadoff spot.

“Kristen is the catalyst to our offense and is a four-year starter,” Havelka said. “She is an excellent leadoff hitter who has stolen 30 bases this year and 96 for her career. She is also a solid second baseman who is the leader of our infield. She has ignited many innings with her hitting and base running. She will attend Murray State University on a softball scholarship.”

NICOLE BOND Bolingbrook junior catcher batted .377 with a .506 on base percentage for the sectional finalists.

“She was the team leader,” Bolingbrook coach Jean RyanMoak said. “She was very vocal on and off the field, always talking to our pitching staff throughout the game.”

JULIA BORK Senior third baseman from Maine South hit .414 with 19 RBI on the season.

“Julia came on strong to end her senior year,” Maine South coach Emilia Pasier said. “She was solid all season at third, but her hitting in the last month propelled the Hawks to some big wins.”

NICOLE BOWMAN Downers South senior outfielder hit .398 with 23 doubles, six homers, 36 RBI and 35 runs scored.

“Nicole has had a great year for us,” Havelka said. “She is a three-year starter and possesses the strongest throwing arm of any player that has played at Downers Grove South. She has also hit clutch home runs against Oak Park and Crown Point Indiana to lead us to victory. She has been a big contributor to the middle of our lineup.”

PAYTON BURESCH Buresch, a junior pitcher, went 13-2 with a 0.992 ERA, striking out 140 batters in just 91.2 innings pitched. She had three home runs, 10 doubles and 36 RBI. “Peyton was our three hitter in our lineup for most of the year,” Morris said. “She was extremely clutch for us in big games and was an awesome teammate. She was someone we always counted on to make big plays and have big at bats.”

MEGAN LOBIANCO Senior from Downers South had a .450 average with 12 doubles, three triples and six home runs.

She drove home 37 runners and scored 51 times.

“She is a very solid shortstop who has made only three errors all season,” Havelka said. “She bats cleanup for us and has delivered many clutch hits in that spot this season. Megan will be attending St. Louis University on an academic and softball

scholarship next year.”

GIANNA MAHONEY Mahoney led Niles West this year with a .398 average to go along with seven doubles, four triples, 18 RBI and 28 runs.

“This was her first year at short so she’s had a lot of learning errors, but she has done a great job there,” West coach Nicole Reynolds said.

“This kid always hustles, always works hard, always want to get better, and is always a leader.

She’s been the lead offensive kid on our team all season. She leads off for us and more times than not gets on to get things going. Makes some great plays at short and is just an all around great kid. Good on the base paths as well.”

BAILEE MOLL Senior from Lockport hit .425 with nine doubles, three triples, three homers, 24 RBI and 33 runs scored.

“Bailee is a captain for us this season,” Chovanec said. “Bailee has had great at bats for us sparking many of our rallies. Bailee will be playing ball in college at Santa Fe College in Florida.”

“Sara has been our team’s leading hitter for most of the season,” Campbell said. “She is very consistent at the plate, has a great eye. She has great range in the outfield and has made some big catches for us. Sara has verbally committed to play for Indiana State University.”

KATIE POLASKI Downers North junior second baseman batted .531 with four doubles, three homers, 19 RBI and 34 runs scored.

“Katie has been a three-year starter on varsity,” Landschoot said. “Katie is a Loyola commit who regularly gets on base and sets the trend for the game. Her offensive and defensive abilities are second to none. Katie is a leader both on and off the field.

You would be hard pressed to find a better all-around softball player than Katie. Katie is expecting to have yet another phenomenal season next year as she caps off her career as a Trojan.”

KILEY ROBB Joliet West junior hit .392 with 34 RBI and three home runs.

AMBERLY RODRIGUEZ Sophomore centerfielder went .395 with 32 runs scored for Plainfield East.

“As great as she was offensively, she was even better defensively,” Morris said. “She did not make a single error the entire season. She made diving catch after diving catch. She made many difficult plays look easy. I think she is the best defensive outfielder not only in our conference, but the area as well. I did not see a better outfielder on our entire schedule.”

SAVANNAH RODRIGUEZ Pitcher from Downers North went 12-6 with 105 strikeouts and a 1.94 ERA as a sophomore. At the plated she batted .443 with 12 doubles, five homers, 22 RBI and 23 runs scored.

“Savannah is only a sophomore and has a very bright future ahead of her, both at the plate and on the mound,” Landschoot said. “Savannah is more than just a hard-thrower - she gets good movement on her pitches and is great at working the count and exploiting the weakness of each hitter she faces. At the plate, Savannah hits for both power and average in the middle of a strong DGN lineup.”

REILLEY JO SWANSON Junior from JCA batted .430 with eight doubles, three triples and 36 runs scored.

BIANCA VOZENILEK Plainfield East junior pitcher went 19-3 with a 1.38 ERA in 157 innings pitched. She struck out 220 batters. At the plate she belted five homers.

“In her three losses, she only gave up four earned runs,” Morris said. “I believe she was the best pitcher in the area this season. She was a huge part of our success.”

Baby Steps, motivation and retirement Why the emergency fund comes before retirement in baby step system Dear Dave, I make $38,000 a year working in the trade show industry, and I’m about to start Baby Step 3. It took 14 months to pay off $8,000 in debt for Baby Step 2, so I’m wondering how long it should take to save up my three to six months of expenses. I’ve also not done a lot toward retirement. I’m 52, and I’m worried about that. How can I stay motivated in the Baby Steps and handle retirement worries?

Donna Dear Donna, The general time frame I look at for saving up a fully funded emergency fund is six months to a year. Your take-home pay should be about $3,000 a month, so three to six months of expenses will probably be in the neighborhood of $8,000 to $10,000. If it took you about a year to pay off that much in debt, then it should take about a

year to accomplish this.

But if you start building retirement right now and have an emergency, you know what you’ll use? You’ll use your retirement.

That’s why the emergency fund comes before retirement in the Baby Steps. The average household income in America, which is often two incomes, is around $52,000. I would challenge you to think about and work toward what you could be doing at age 60 that will make you that much or even more.

You’re probably working really hard for that $38,000. In your 50s, if you’re starting over — or if you start making a lot more — we call that an “encore career.” So I want you to start thinking fresh again. Don’t quit today, but you’re going to be making $38,000 eight years from now unless you start aiming at something else.

All this is as much an answer to your retirement fears as trying to leapfrog and start doing retirement without an emergency fund. Put your emergency fund in place over the next 12 months, and start doing some goal setting and thinking.

Maybe you’d like to own a trade show or events company by that time.

Ask yourself, “What would I do if I could do anything?” Because you know what? You can do anything!

Generosity or overspending?

Dear Dave, I’ve heard you talk about the importance of giving using the phrase “outrageous generosity.”

But at what point does outrageous generosity become foolish overspending?

Josiah Dear Josiah, This is a good question. Your first mandate is to take care of your own household. The Bible says if you don’t do this, you’re worse than an unbeliever. So start with your own family. Are you able to take care of the basic lifestyle and needs of

your family? The pursuit of giving shouldn’t interrupt the food on your own family’s table.

The Bible also says in the house of the wise there are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has. You need to be saving, too, in order to be biblically wise. If you spend everything you make, or, for that matter, if you gave away everything you make on an ongoing basis, it would be foolish.

There are individual times where people may be called to give in an extreme way, but I’m talking about a pattern of living or way of life over an extended period of time.

If you just say you’re going to give away your whole income and let the government support you at the expense of your family, that’s not biblical. And it’s not a wise way to live your life.

Heroes for Homeless supports programs Catholic Charities of Joliet holds inaugural motorcycle run

Catholic Charities of Joliet shifted gears over the weekend, driving community members by the dozens to the inaugural Heroes for the Homeless Motorcycle Run. The fundraiser is one of many events organized by the agency, whose aim is to provide social services to individuals in need and other vulnerable members of the community.

Highlights from event included live music by School of Rock Mokena, food and a raffle.

Marianne Melcher, an event coordinator for Catholic Charities of Joliet, said bringing the community together in support of the agency is key to its ability to provide services.

“With it being our first time for this event, we’re looking forward to reaching out to others in the community who haven’t been to our events,” she said.

Kathleen Langdon, director of development and communications for Catholic Charities of Joliet, said the event is particularly important now because of social service cuts associated with the state of Illinois’ ongoing budget impasse.

“Even though Catholic Charities of Joliet hasn’t incurred the monetary problems, we have seen an increase in clients,” she said.

Langdon added that even though Catholic Charities of Joliet was financially “well prepared,” many more agencies will be negatively impacted the longer Illinois goes without a state budget.

“If they don’t fix this budget, even the strongest agencies will feel what happens from not having it,” she said.

The goal of Heroes for the Homeless is to bring the

community together in support of the Catholic Charities and its programs.

Bob Weber, of Plainfield, was one of many bikers who attended the motorcycle run. He said he heard about the event through a few friends from his workplace.

“I love doing this,” said Weber, who recently participated in a different motorcycle run for charity. “I love raising money for charities like this.”

Riding his motorcycle in support of the homeless, the needy and seniors is something that Weber said has great meaning.

“Being able to help people who

are a lot worse off than I am makes me feel really good,” he added.

Brad Kanpkiewicz, of Plainfield, was also cruising the streets of Plainfield as part of the Heroes for the Homeless Motorcycle Run. He too recently completed another motorcycle run for charity. After hearing about the Heroes for the

Homeless event from some of his friends, Kanpkiewicz said he’s been looking forward to riding again in support of a good cause.

“It’s nice to ride with nice people [and] do good things for charities,” he said. “It makes the ride really special. Helping people, that’s the way life should be.”
