Legislators continue to discuss state budget crisis Fountaindale Public Library hosts 2nd annual town hall By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

When local legislators came back to the Fountaindale Public Library for their second town hall meeting in Bolingbrook, they didn’t believe they would still be talking about the budget crisis facing the state.

Residents from throughout the area came to the meeting, sponsored by State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, with questions about school funding, cuts to social services, pension reform and increased taxes.

Fountaindale Library Board President Peggy Danhof kicked off the event thanking Bertino-Tarrant, Sen. Pat McGuire and state reps.

Emily McAsey and Natalie Manley for hosting the event. Danhof then called on them to put a halt to a property tax freeze that would essentially leave a shortfall for the library district, which receives 95 percent of its operating revenue from property taxes.

The discussion turned into a repeat of last year’s town hall, with lawmakers saying they are fighting to fix the state’s financial troubles by not only relying on cutbacks but trying to push through a change in how government works.

We can’t just cut everything, we have to be judicious about it.”

McGuire explained that 90 percent of the state’s budget obligations are being met, but added that the 10 percent of the budget that is at a standstill involves education and human services funding. He said legislators had come up with a plan that filled the $7.8 billion hole in the state budget, identifying a plan including $2.7 million in cuts and $5.3 billion in creating new revenue. However, both parties could not agree, said McGuire.

The best measure to come forward is a stop gap budget that will get the state through to the election, McGuire added.

As of press time, legislators were not yet called back to session to vote on the proposed budget, and the hope is that will happen before June 30 and another fiscal year begins without a budget.

“I am hopeful that the legislature is in the midst of fruitful discussion and that there is a true meeting of the minds to devise a plan that will address real concerns--making sure schools are open and that services are intact for those that need it,” said McAsey.

To do that, the group of Democratic legislators agreed

“At the end of the day, we are still working--our role is to protect our district and express our opinion,” said Bertino-Tarrant. “...We have been close to a higher education bill and saving services. Republicans want to provide lump sums and Democrats want it itemized to see where its is allocated.”

Manley said she has seen the annihilation of social service programs and strongly believes cuts are not the answer.

For many in the audience, like Gertrude Harper of Bolingbrook, it was about social services. Harper noted the importance of keeping preschool programs open at the

Alpha Missionary Baptist Church and ensuring that Hesed House in Aurora -- one of the largest homeless shelters in the area -- up and running.

“I am a numbers person but these numbers are people,” said Manley.

“You just can’t wipe them out.”

She explains that cutting some programs just may create larger problems with greater cost in the end.

“We can’t cut ourselves out of this situation,” said Manley. “It requires logical cuts and increased revenue; that’s the only way it will work.”

The legislators compelled everyone in attendance to contact those lawmakers who did “not get that fact.”

Other attendees questioned the burden placed on business owners faced with an increased cost in worker’s compensation and the ongoing debate on pension reform.

“I am set to retire; what is going to keep me in Illinois,” said Lynn Dempsey.

The legislators at the June 16 meeting said those issues would be addressed by continued rate reviews, a modernization of the tax system and a better spending plan.

McGuire said some proposals being introduced include a variety of ways to increase revenue, such as increasing income taxes, gaming expansion, broadening the sales tax and placing a tax on sugary drinks.

Residents were encouraged to keep the lines of communication open and call their representatives for further information.

County to use federal grant for Village heroin prevention efforts set for annual picnic

Rain or shine, the village of Bolingbrook’s 32nd annual Village Picnic will be the place for family-fun entertainment later this month.

The free event will be hosted from noon to 6 p.m. June 26 behind the Bolingbrook Town Center, 375 Briarcliff Road.

This year, the event’s organizers are offering attendees a variety of activities, including a petting zoo, climbing treadwall, pony rides, trackless train, kiddie obstacle, fishing derby, cupcake baking, egg toss and hot dog eating contests, bingo, Art in the Park, a senior tent and more.

Community organizations will also be at the picnic, selling food in addition to free hot dogs.

Additionally, the event will feature live entertainment on the Performing Arts Stage.

Performances will include the Bolingbrook Community Chorus, Bolingbrook High School bands, Weber Irish Dancers, KineDanCo, Bolingbrook Park District Dance Force, Theater on the Hill and Freenotes.

In an effort to reverse the increasing number of heroin overdose deaths in the area, the Will County Board voted unanimously to allocate $30,000 from a federal Justice Assistance Grant to continue heroin prevention curriculum in county schools.

Board members recently approved a recommendation from Will County Executive Larry Walsh to apply for a U.S. Department of Justice grant to introduce the Robert Crown Center for Health Education’s heroin prevention curriculum in the Lincoln-Way High Schools and the Wilmington Community Unit School District.

“Heroin abuse continues to plague our entire nation and as county leaders, we are obligated to do as much as possible to help fight this crisis,” Walsh said in a news release announcing the grant application. “These federal grant dollars will enable us to continue to educate our children about the dangers of heroin and other prescription drug abuse.”

For the last six years, the county has used justice assistance grants to begin a pilot heroin education programs at several county school districts, including Bolingbrook and Romeoville schools in Valley View School District 365U, Joliet

Township High School District, Troy School District, and Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202. Robert Crown’s heroin prevention curriculum teaches children to understand the risks associated with drug use, specifically targeting heroin and prescription pain medication.

“I believe it’s important to partner and work with our local school districts to provide resources and as much education as possible about the dangers of heroin use,” said Will County Board member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox. “I look forward to seeing this program begin in more schools throughout Will County, as it’s an important step in fighting back against the epidemic.”

The 2016 justice assistance grant would allow the curriculum to be presented to approximately 1,750 freshmen students in the Lincoln Way High School District and 210 eighth and ninth grade students in the Wilmington School District.

“We are very thankful to Will County for offering this

important prevention education to our students and their families,” said Matt Swick, soon to be superintendent for the Wilmington School District. “Our communities have been particularly hard hit by this heroin crisis and we must do all we can to educate our students about the dangers of drug abuse.”

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data indicate that 2014 was the deadliest year on record for drug overdoses in the U.S. In the past four years, heroin overdose deaths have more than tripled.

With the exception of Cook County, Will County had a higher number of heroin overdose deaths in 2015 than any other Illinois

county. Last year, 53 people died of heroin overdose death in the county, representing an approximately 50 percent increase over 2014 figures.

“We are approaching the heroin epidemic in a comprehensive way,” Walsh said. “By educating students in a pro-active manner before they get caught up in this awful drug and also having first responders prepared to deal with the negative consequences of heroin use, we are hoping to save lives and get people on the road to recovery.”

Last year, Will County launched a program to equip and train first responders to administer the heroin overdose antidote naloxone to individuals experiencing an overdose.

New serving lines, custom-made sandwiches on tap for VVSD’s older students “Made for you” meal options will be available at all 7 middle, high schools When the 2016-17 school year arrives, Valley View School District 365U middle school and high school students will be greeted with a variety of changes in their lunchtime serving lines.

For the first time ever, “Made For You” meal options will be

available at all seven middle and high school cafeterias.

“When our customers (students) go out into the real world, they go to the Subways and the Chipotles where they tell the person behind the counter exactly what they want on their individualized custom-made food item,” said VVSD Nutrition Services Director Meghan Gibbons. “But there will still be some pre-wrapped grab ‘n go options because we need to be able to get them through the lines at lightning speed.”

In addition, VVSD is replacing

old, outdated cafeteria equipment at both Humphrey Middle School and Bolingbrook High School with new serving lines and open-curtain vertically standing refrigerator display cases. Similar equipment was installed at Jane Addams and Martinez middle schools last summer.

“From where they pick up their trays to where the staff serves them behind the counter will change,” Gibbons said. “We’re going from a traditional serving line in cold wells to a modern convenience store look. Now our customers can grab their

food and go. It’s a little more accommodating.”

The 38-year-old serving line at Humphrey will be replaced with energy efficient open air refrigerated display cases with LED lighting. An air curtain, complete with sneeze guards, will keep everything safe and chilled.

Similar refrigerated display cases with their own selfcontained refrigeration systems will replace the six original units at Bolingbrook High School.

“It’s hard to believe we’re replacing equipment in a building that seems so new. But

just as in a new house, things start breaking down after 10 years or so,” Gibbons said. “Plus high school students are not very easy on them.”

Refrigeration systems for the current units are located on the BHS roof making maintenance and repairs are both challenging and time-consuming. Service and repair will be significantly easier since the new units will each have their own refrigeration system.

“Maintaining an efficient operation with a nice look is important because we need to keep our customers happy and make sure they have a good dining experience from start to finish,” Gibbons said.

Bolingbrook Park District celebrating Olympic Day Free event celebrates history of modern Olympic Games

The spirit of the Olympic Movement will roll into Bolingbrook as Bolingbrook Park District hosts a free family event in celebration of Olympic Day. The event will take place from 11

a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25 at the Annerino Community Center.

Participants can complete their own Olympic journey by taking part in 11 different Olympic-style activities. Upon completion, they

will receive a certificate and medal.

“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in the Bolingbrook community,” said Maureen Franzen, Recreation Manager/Gymnastics & Cheer.

“Bolingbrook Park District is proud to support the Olympic Movement and encourage children to lead healthy, active lives.”

The Bolingbrook Park District activity is one of more than 2,000 events taking place nationwide during the month of June. The events, designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-friendly

activities and interactive learning experiences.

Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, citywide events.

Marshmallow Challenge kicks off VVSD’s Discovery Academy Students will learn team building, intro to videogame creation and mobile apps Valley View School District 365U launched its Discovery Academy for middle and high school students with a team-building activity, an introduction to video game creation and some computer app work.

The team building activity involved 20 sticks of spaghetti, a yard of tape, a yard of string and a marshmallow. Each team of four students was asked to design and build a free-standing structure with the marshmallow on top.

Over the remaining days, students will learn how to create an app for a mobile device, develop a video game, build a website, explore careers and colleges, and discover the joy and excitement of science.

The two-week academy is designed to foster skills, confidence, and interest in scientific and technological fields. The 60 Discovery Scholars will engage in hands-on Science, Technology,

Local airports need a lifeline editorial

Local airports and aviation are important to communities

When most people think of aviation, they often think of Chicago, commercial service and O’Hare International Airport. But there is so much more. Throughout the rest of the state, there are close to 98 general aviation airports that connect hundreds of communities. Medevacs, blood banks, law enforcement use small aircraft to transport people, supplies and survey neighborhoods.

And, general aviation contributes more than $9 billion to the state’s total economic output and supports more than 42,000 jobs. Specifically, companies of all sizes use general aviation to conduct business more efficiently, travel to meet with customers and suppliers, deliver parts and tools quickly, and travel to places without commercial service.

Local airports and the aviation industry also offer promising careers and job growth. Training and degree programs like the ones at Lewis University, Parkland College and Southern Illinois University, just to name a few, are teaching young people to be pilots and mechanics.

And this industry supports the passion for flight, as well. From 1910, when a group of flying enthusiasts founded the Aero Club of Illinois at Cicero Field, to the current City of Chicago Air & Water Show and Wings Over Waukegan, aviation connects communities and inspires people of all ages.

General aviation is also critical to transporting patients and their families seeking medical treatment.

Organizations such as Lifeline Pilots, based in Peoria, fly patients and their families to specialized medical treatment centers in and around the region.

For example, recently, a volunteer pilot flew a one-year-old boy and his family from the St. Louis area to the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia for lifesaving heart surgery. The boy had a compromised immune system,

preventing him from traveling on a commercial flight. General aviation and the generosity of volunteer pilots made this treatment and flights like this everyday possible.

But this may not always be the case.

In Washington, some have proposed taking away governance over our air traffic system away from Congress and putting it under a board of directors that would be dominated by the big airlines. This board would dominate decisions about fees, routes, what airports get invested in.

This type of system would likely leave smaller communities left out - the same communities that have seen their routes cut by 20 percent over the last several years.

Right now, our air transportation system is the busiest, the largest and the most diverse in the world.

Thousands of airports serve millions of passengers and communities large and small. Let’s keep it that way and make sure our aviation system stays open to business for everyone.

Staff recognized for editorial, advertising, sports categories

By Voyager Media staff The Bugle, Enterprise and Sentinel newspapers took home numerous awards during the annual Illinois Press Association convention and awards ceremony, held June 8-10 in Springfield.

Voyager Media’s editorial staff won 13 awards in categories recognizing best school board coverage and government beat reporting, among others; the advertising department added another 14 awards in categories such as ad design and niche publications.

Among the top honors for the editorial department was a first place award for Best Special Section.

The award recognized a one-time

special insert published along with the Aug. 27 issues of the Joliet Bugle, Shorewood Sentinel and Plainfield Enterprise commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 1990 Plainfield tornado.

“Where We Stand: Remembering the 1990 Tornado 25 Years Later” explored the myriad ways Plainfield and nearby towns came together following the deadly storm to rebuild structures, re-establish a new sense of community and ultimately remember the 8 minutes in August that transformed the area. Judges commented that, “This section does a wonderful job of recapping what happens, honoring those who suffered, and providing info for the present and the future.”

Another of the paper’s first-place awards was for Best Original Column.

Daniel Smrokowski won the award for his monthly ”Special Voices” column, in which Smrokowski shares the unique stories of area residents with different intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as

updates on Special Olympics Illinois.

Judges said his column was “inspiring and generally well written.”

Niles area reporter Igor Studenkov also took top honors, receiving a first place award for Government Beat Reporting and a second place award for Best School Board Coverage.

Guided by a commitment to provide its online readers with the same highquality news content, Voyager Media’s editorial staff received a second-place award in the Best Website category for www.buglenewspapers.com. Judges said the website was a “close second” and described it as “a good site” that is easy to view and navigate.

Additionally, the sports department won third place for the Plainfield Enterprise sports section.

Fifty-nine newspapers submitted nearly 900 contest entries for the competition.

The Illinois Press Association represents 450 daily and non daily newspapers. Its headquarters are in Springfield.

Mistwood redesign completed with finished clubhouse By mark gregory SportS reporter

Anyone that lives in the Will County area and has driven down Renwick Road in Romeoville has without a doubt witnessed the evolution of Mistwood Golf Club.

Those who just drive by on occasion or one time will see beautiful buildings from the road and a peek at the golf course that lies behind them.

However, it is not until you park your car in the parking lot and walk past the bag drop do you really realize the amazing facility that lies 45 minutes outside of Chicago.

Over the last few years the golf course itself was redesigned and a state-of-the art Performance Center was built.

Now, the next phase is complete and it is the most obvious to the passer by.

Settled closest to the road is the newest building that houses The Great Hall and McWethy’s Tavern.

The Hall is a venue that can host functions from weddings, fundraisers or a corporate meeting and can accommodate from up to 220 people – more with tenting options.

Sharing a building with the Great Hall is McWethy’s – a Tavern that offers a full menu

with something for everyone. It can be a great place to eat after playing 18 holes or just a place to go for a nice meal.

While McWethy’s does allow the non golfers to enjoy the ambiance of Mistwood without teeing up a single shot – golf is still the name of the game at Mistwood – and what golf it has.

The round starts with a 395 yard par-4 that makes you think right off the bat as the hole offers a split fairway with a creek that offers players options on how to attack the tee shot. A good approach is also critical as bunkers on the sides and behind the green wait for a bad shot.

The second hole is a slightly shorter par-4 that features a wide fairway, but also has a pair of stacked sod bunkers in the middle that players must navigate to score well.

Hole 3 is the first par-5 on the course and the first time water comes into play and it is also the first of several chances you get to play while looking into the stunning architecture. Long hitters can reach the green in 2, but an undulating green makes it a difficult putt once you are there.

Number 4 is a 400-plus yard par 4 that features rolling hills and more stacked sod bunkers, while 5 is another medium range par 4 that again sees water come into play.

4 on number 6, the seventh hole offers the first of four par 3s on the course.

This 240-yard hole plays downhill with Loch St. James, the largest body of water on the course, scaring players from taking a club up.

The front nine ends with a 600-yard par-5 on No. 8 that again brings the large loch into play. The hole was dubbed “one of the top par 5s in the country”

It is followed by a 180-yard par-3

that again brings the clubhouse into sight.

After grabbing a quick sandwich and a drink at the turn, players are treated to a short par-4 to open the back nine. Like many holes on the course, this is another risk/reward hole that could offer players a nice way to open the second half of the round.

Number 11 is also a hole that could yield a birdie for hitters that can get the ball out into the fairway and take advantage of

the 440-yard par-4.

Hole 12 is another midrange par 4 with water on one side and a separating the fairway. The approach shot is key here as the deepest of all the stacked sod bunkers sits directly in the front center of the green all but daring players to challenge it.

Starting with 13, water becomes a nemesis as you complete your round.

Downers South’s Dimovski tabbed Player of the Year

Having back-to-back seasons cut short due to ACL tears is a bit much for many athletes to come back from.

Not so for Downers Grove South’s Alexa Dimovski.

Not only did Dimovski come back from twice tearing her ACL earlier in her career with the Mustangs, she came back with a vengeance, scoring 26 goals and adding nine assists, the second straight-year she led the team in scoring.

Those accomplishments make her the 2016 Voyager Media Soccer Player of the Year.

“It feels really great,” Dimovski said. “I was a lot stronger this year. I worked a lot harder from my junior to senior year. I did a lot of strength training and I really wanted to come back because of my love for soccer.”

June 13 is not the best day for Dimovski as she had ACL surgery on the exact same day two years in a row after her freshman and sophomore seasons.

However, she would not give up her dream of playing soccer.

“It was hard, especially the second time around knowing I had to come back from it again,” she said. “It took a lot of hard work and commitment.”

Dimovski, a Division-II Maryville University recruit, also became more of a leader on the field in her senior campaign.

“This season Lexi really stepped into a leadership role and was a truly combative and skilled presence that demanded that the team match the same expectations she set for herself,” DGS coach Chris Hernandez said. “This is Lexi’s fourth season on varsity, but only her second completed season due to consecutive seasons with ACL injuries. Taking this into account Lexi’s career feats have been remarkable. There are few players who are as clutch as Lexi as nine of her 26 goals were game-tying or game-winning. Lexi has moved into the top-10 in program history for career goals as well as goals scored in a season.”

TAYLOR BARZOWSKI

The Maine South senior anchored the defense for the Hawks and was an all-conference and all-sectional selection.

“Taylor was our rock in the back,” Maine South coach JJ Crawford said. “She will be playing soccer next year at Minnesota State. She had the ability to mark the other teams best player out of games. She was also the team’s emotional leader.”

ALYSE DUTCHER A senior defender for Downers North, Dutcher was an allconference and all-sectional selection this year.

“She is a senior captain on our team and was a major part of our 15 shutouts during our 14-6-1 season,” Downers North coach Bob Calder said. “She is a leader and exceptional defender that will be playing at the University of Indianapolis next year. We only allowed eight goals throughout the entire season because of her leadership, organization and skill in back.”

MACAYLA DWYER Romeoville goalie was busy throughout the year, but the sophomore was still able to record five shutouts. She made 183 saves on the season.

“Macayla is probably hands down the best goalie in the SPC conference,” Romeoville coach Philip Wicyk said. “She plays on a team in which only six athletes play year-round. When you ask a goalie to make 17-plus saves a game against conference opponents and still keep your team in the game is huge. Most of the goals allowed on her have been break-aways (though she stopped a handful of them in each game as well) and PKs. Ask anyone in our conference who is the best goalie and I can almost certainly guarantee they say Romeoville’s keeper.”

KATIE GESIOR Benet junior posted a teambest 11 goals this season en route to being named the ESCC Player of the Year.

“Katie is a three-year varsity starter whose versatility allowed her to fill both offensive and defensive needs as a central midfielder,” Benet coach Bob Gros said. “She has excellent composure on the ball in tight spaces and makes quality decisions to get our offense to flow. Katie is outstanding on set pieces and led our team in goals with 11. She is an exceptional leader on and off of the field who has already been named a team captain as a junior.”

ERIN GRAEFEN A junior from Plainfield Central, Graefen recorded 10 goals and three assists on the season.

“Erin does a great job possessing the ball up top for us,” Central coach Ken Schoen said. “She is dangerous in 1v1 situations because she has fantastic skill on the ball and finishes well. She is also outstanding in the air as her 184 recorded headers this season attests. She also understands when her team needs her to drop back and help defend. Erin is the heart of our team.”

A freshman from Plainfield North, Grant led the Tigers with 16 goals, while adding four assists.

“Molly was our leading scorer this year and became a much more dangerous player as the season went on,” Crowe said.

“Her effort off of the ball made her a difficult player for defenders to handle. As just a freshman, Molly made an immediate impact in the area as a goal scorer.”

Plainfield North four-year varsity player had three goals and 16 assists this year from her midfield position.

“Sam has been the heart and soul of our team this year in the middle of the field,” North coach Jane Crowe said. “She is consistently the best player on the field. Her work rate, vision, and technical ability are rarely

She constantly wins the ball 1 v 1. There is a lot of talent in the room and often times defenders get overlooked, for her efforts game in and game out, and from what I have seen this year from other teams, Jamie deserves to be the number one player in the room.”

BROOKE JANECZEK Lockport senior tallied 10 goals and nine assists on the season.

“Brooke Janeczek is our most versatile player,” Elkei said.

“The strength of our team was our back three last year and we moved Brooke to try and create more offense. Brooke responded, playing away from her normal comfort zone, she has become the catalyst of our offense. She is a hardnosed player that works tirelessly on the field. She has been a true difference maker for our team offensively this year.”

BETSY KEEFE Junior forward notched eight goals and 10 assists this year for Benet.

“Betsy was our most dangerous offensive player this season with the ability to consistently beat defenders around the corner with her speed and strength,” Gros said. “Created the majority of our offensive chances.”

NICHOLE LOPATIN The Niles West senior had another strong season, finishing with 21 goals and 10 assists.

“Nicole has meant a lot to the team in the way that teams had to make sure that they watched her which allowed for other players to get open for shots,” Niles West coach Brett Clish said. “Nichole is extremely quick and has good skill with the ball. She finished her career with 81 goals to smash the previous record.”

FRANCESCA MARCONI Downers North sophomore defender was a part of stingy

defense that allowed just eight goals.

“Francesca was an AllConference player in the West Suburban Silver this year as well as all-sectional,” Calder said. “She is an incredibly skilled soccer player who was a major part of our 15 shutouts during our 146-1 season. We only allowed eight goals throughout the entire season because of her leadership, organization and skill in back.

When it is all said and done, I would be shocked if she was not a Division-I soccer player.”

DANA O’BOYE The first-year player from Plainfield North anchored the defense as a senior.

“Dana has been the leader of our defense this year,” Crowe said. “She organizes the team from the back. Her decisionmaking is outstanding, and was the glue that held the back line together this season.”

MADISON OURADA Plainfield South junior defender helped the Cougars reach the regional final, while being an allsectional performer.

“Madison was a rock in the back line for us all season,” South coach Dave Brown said.

“She consistently kept our team organized defensively and shut down the opposition’s attacking options.”

NATALIA PINTO Downers South senior finished with 17 goals and 15 assists.

“This is Natalia’s third season on varsity and her second as captain,” Hernandez said.

“Natalia Natalia is very skilled with the ball at her feet and has the ability to turn in tight spaces.

“This, along with her vision allows Natalia to be a highly effective player.

Natalia’s leadership both on and off the field will definitely be missed next season.”

AUTUMN RASMUSSEN A four-year varsity player from Downers South, Rasmussen concluded her career with 17 goals and 15 assists.

“Her versatility is an immediate indication of her ability as a player,” Hernandez said. “She

ANNIKA SCHMIDT Maine South sophomore forward totaled a team-best 13 goals on the season and was an all-sectional selection.

“She was the difference in a number of games,” Crawford said. “She has a great burst and first touch and has the ability to take players on.”

A sophomore from Westmont, Slaga impressed again this year, racking up 22 goals and 16 assists.

“She made all the players around her much better,”

If you didn’t like water on the par 3, you will see more on No. 15. A 500-plus yard par-5, the fairway wraps 90 degrees left around the water. Most hitters can fly some part of the loch – the question is, how far left to do you dare go? The hole plays longer for those not willing to try and go over the water.

Once over off the tee, the second shot offers the loch to the left with a very narrow landing zone for to put you in a good position for an approach.

The final par-3 on the course is No. 17. While there is water on the left here, it is not nearly as in play as the previous holes with the exception of an errant tee shot.

The par-5 18th requires a straight tee shot as the left side of the fairway is guarded by bunkers and the right side could see your ball end up in the trees or out on Renwick Road for the erratic hitter.

Skilled players can reach the green in two, however, be cautious of the creek cutting across the end of the fairway on your second shot.

Greens fees at Mistwood are

$85 on weekdays and $105 Friday through Sunday, with a discount after 2 pm that offers a $65 play on weekdays and $85 on the weekends.

For the price and location, the course is one a skilled player will want to play over and over to try and master, but is worth every dollar for an average player to spoil himself and play at an amazing course for a price that is competitive, if not below, some of its counterparts.

Once a player experiences all that Mistwood has to offer after the two-year renovation project, they will return either for more golf, a lesson or just to have dinner.

In the wake of the largest mass shooting in U.S. history, the Central Florida Better Business Bureau and the BBB Wise Giving Alliance are cautioning donors to be alert to potential red flags in fundraising for Orlando victims and their families.

As the national charity monitoring arm of the Better Business Bureau, the Wise Giving Alliance says people should be aware of the different circumstances that often emerge in tragedy-related philanthropy.

“The world has rushed to support the city of Orlando and the victims of this heinous crime,” said Holly Salmons, president and CEO of the BBB serving Central Florida. “We encourage those who want to show their support through donations to do so with caution. Scammers depend on heightened emotions that often follow closely behind tragic events.”

Chicago and Northern BBB President and CEO Steve Bernas said tragic events such as the mass shootinginOrlandosometimesopen

the doors for click-bait schemes and questionable solicitations.

“We expect there could be scams and frauds,” he said. “We urge those generous donors to give wisely so their gifts can do the most good.”

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance urges donors to give thoughtfully and avoid those seeking to take advantage of the generosity of others.

Consumers can search the BBB database of accredited businesses and charities at no charge by visiting the website “Ask BBB,” www.ask.bbb. org. A full database of all businesses and ratings can also be found on the main BBB website, www.bbb.org.

Here are 10 tips for giving with confidence.

Thoughtful Giving Take the time to check out the charity to avoid wasting your generosity by donating to a questionable or poorly managed effort. The first request for a donation may not be the best choice. Be proactive and find trusted charities that are providing assistance.

State Government Registration About 40 of the 50 states require charities to register with a state government agency (usually a division of the State Attorney General’s office) before they solicit

for charitable gifts. If the charity is not registered, that may be a significant red flag.

Respecting Victims and Their Families Organizations raising funds should get permission from the families to use either the names of the victims and/or any photographs of them. Some charities raising funds for the Colorado movie theater victims did not do this and were the subject of criticism from victims’ families.

How Will Donations Be Used?

Watch out for vague appeals that don’t identify the intended use of funds. For example, how will the donations help victims’ families?

Also, unless told otherwise, donors will assume that funds collected quickly in the wake of a tragedy will be spent just as quickly. See if the appeal identifies when the collected funds will be used.

What if a Family Sets Up Its Own Assistance Fund?

Some families may decide to set up their own assistance funds. Be mindful that such funds may not be set up as charities. Also, make sure that collected monies are received and administered by a third party such as a bank, CPA or lawyer.

Advocacy Organizations Tragedies that involve violent acts with firearms can also generate requests from a variety of advocacy organizations that address gun use.

Donors can support these efforts as well but note that some of these advocacy groups are not tax exempt as charities. Also, watch out for newly created advocacy groups that will be difficult to check out.

Online Cautions Never click on links to charities on unfamiliar websites or in texts or emails. These may take you to a lookalike website where you will be asked to provide personal financial information or to click on something that downloads harmful malware into your computer. Don’t assume that charity recommendations on Facebook, blogs or other social media have already been vetted.

Financial Transparency After funds are raised for a tragedy, it is even more important for organizations to provide an

accounting of how funds were spent.

Transparent organizations will post this information on their websites so that anyone can find out and not have to wait until the audited financial statements are available sometime in the future.

Newly Created or Established Organizations This is a personal giving choice, but an established charity will more likely have the experience to quickly address the circumstances and have a track record that can be evaluated.

A newly formed organization may be well-meaning but will be difficult to check out and may not be well managed.

Tax Deductibility Not all organizations collecting funds to assist this tragedy are tax exempt as charities under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donors can support these other entities but keep this in mind if they want to take a deduction for federal income tax purposes.

In addition, contributions that are donor-restricted to help a specific individual/family are not deductible as charitable donations, even if the recipient organization is a charity.
