Bolingbrook’s inaugural Pet Parade is set to prance off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 23 at The Promenade Bolingbrook.

In an effort to support various pet-loving community groups and the West Suburban Humane Society, the event welcomes all pet owners to come out to strut their stuff.

Parade line-up begins at 6 p.m., with “entry number pick-up” beginning at 5:30 p.m. and will be located on Brook Lane near bd’s Mongolian Grill and Ted’s Montana Grill, in the Promenade at 631 Boughton Road, Bolingbrook. The parade will weave through two of the streets inside the mall and end with a Post-Parade Pet Party.

Spectators can come out to watch the parade for free. If you would like your pet to participate, there is a $5 entrance fee for the first 200 and $7 per pet for the remaining 300.

Top dogs (and other animals) will be awarded special prizes in various categories such as costumed pets, large, medium and small dogs, and more. All pets will receive woof-worth giveaways (while supplies last) just for walking.

You may also bring your “pet-like” stuffed animal, dress them up, decorate a wagon and enter them into the parade to join the fun. All pets must be accompanied by at least one adult handler and no livestock is allowed. Dogs must be leashed at all times while all other pets must be caged and pulled in a wagon.

Seniors can get home repair help through grant program Senior Services Center has been providing services to seniors since 1967

As part of the annual Community Development Block Grant program, the Village of Bolingrook has set aside $70,000 to assist residents in need throughout Bolingbrook.

The village entered into an agreement with Senior Services of Will County that allows them to help with home maintenance repairs for those in low- to medium-income households with home assistance.

Approximately $35,000 received through the annual contribution of the CDBG program will be donated

to the group.

Senior Services of Will County has the knowledge and expertise in offering such programs and will act with the village to provide such assistance thanks to the grant. The group will have offices onsite at the Levy Center to administer the emergency home repair to qualified Bolingbrook seniors.

The repair needs must relate to those that pose an immediate threat to health, safety, and the quality of life of tenants. These repairs can range from heating and cooling and HVAC repairs to emergency plumbing repairs. The group estimates that at least 50 households can benefit from this program.

As a not-for profit agency 501(c) (3), the Senior Services Center has been providing services and programs to the area’s senior citizens and their families since 1967. The

Center’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for older persons, help maintain the wellness and the independence of older persons, and to help avoid or lessen isolation and loneliness.

In addition, $36,000 in grant funds will be given to assist in housing counseling and foreclosure prevention through the Community Service County of Northern Will County. The goal of this project is to help low/moderate income households to find affordable housing that meets their financial needs. The project helps those who are seeking help with their rent or mortgage.

The CSC offers services in the areas of mortgage default, rental assistance, pre-purchasing, money management and budgeting, and senior reverse mortgage. The group estimates being able to help 100 families annually.

Educational Foundation announces 2017-18 grants The Valley View Educational Enrichment Foundation and Valley View School District 365U have teamed up to award a combined 38 grants totaling more than $40,000 to teachers and administrators to be used for programs during the 2017-18 school year.

The VVEEF issued 28 of the grants from its own funding sources, and worked with the

VVSD administration to find additional funding sources for 10 more grants to allow funding for nearly nine of ten grant applications submitted.

“We continue to be inspired by all of the creative grant submissions this year,” said Mike Lawler, President of the Foundation.

“These programs truly make a difference in the lives of our youth.”

JJC expands campus’ size, academic offerings Final touches on upgraded Romeoville campus underway for fall classes

With the fall semester months away, the final touches on the upgraded Romeoville campus of Joliet Junior College are underway.

The campus was transformed with a new two-story building rising up out of the farmlands adjacent to its current facility.

Construction began last fall on the new 50,000 square-foot building that will become the entrance of the campus, now facing 135th Street, just off Weber Road. The original campus opened in 1993 with a 35,000-square-foot facility including 12 classrooms, 12 laboratories, library and administrative offices.

As one of the school’s main projects outlined in the updated 2013 JJC Master Plan, the administration long-considered the expansion of the Romeoville facility as a priority in the hopes of matching the explosive growth of the area with academic offerings. Since its

inception, the Romeoville campus has seen an explosion in enrollment, some 45 percent over the past 10 years.

According to JJC, because of this new expansion, the campus will now be able to offer two complete degrees. Students can earn an associate in arts degree or an associate in science degree entirely from the Romeoville campus location.

Since October 2014, Demonica Kemper Architects (DKA) worked with college committees to assess the specific programming needs, ensuring that the buildings will meet end-users’ needs.

The lower level will be dedicated to student support services including career counseling, guidance, a bookstore, and cafeteria.

The second level will house science laboratories and classroom space.

An executive summary of the plan shows that the 40-acre site at the Romeoville campus should, according to school officials, more than adequately accommodate the needed academic addition(s)

to the west of the existing onestory building, as well as an addition to the east for new student development space. While the existing parking capacity is currently meeting the needs of this location, both parking lots could easily be expanded to the west for future capacity needs, according to the plan.

In essence, the new Romeoville expansion is being designed to make it a self-sufficient campus similar to the main campus in Joliet.

JJC officials say the project remains on time and budget and the new expansion building is expected to be open for classes by the Fall 2017 semester.

New and returning students can now register for fall semester classes, which will start Monday, Aug. 21.

An anticipated grand opening for the Romeoville campus expansion is planned for October.

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN, RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE Older Americans may be in for a rough ride if the changes Washington politicians are considering come to pass. Because good, explanatory journalism is in short supply and TV shouting matches don’t tell you much, I decided to use this space to discuss some of the possible changes that could soon affect millions of people in their 60s and older.

First, let’s consider Medicaid, the federal-state program that finances healthcare for the poor and long term care for the middle class. Virtually all the talk about cutting Medicaid by more than $800 billion over the next 10 years has centered on the 11 million people who gained health coverage under the Medicaid provisions of the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare.

Most of those Americans will lose their health coverage if the legislation the House passed in early May to replace Obamacare gets through the Senate. Equally affected will be seniors and their families who now count on Medicaid to fund long-term care.

Medicaid pays for about half of all nursing home stays, but it also pays for care elders receive in the community under special waiver programs. These might include home care, adult day care, and other services that help people stay in their homes.

I asked Medicaid experts what would happen if the funds families now depend on disappear. All said that if federal allocations to the states are capped or

reduced in some other way, states would have less to give families needing longterm care assistance. More families will be on their own to pay for some or all of the care a loved one needs.

The U.S. has never had a policy to pay for such care, so Medicaid, by default, became the vehicle for funding. And as Judy Feder, a professor of public policy at Georgetown University, told me recently Medicaid dollars have never been sufficient to pay for the growing number of Americans needing long-term care.

Proposed changes will only make things worse.

Stacy Sanders, federal policy director for the advocacy group the Medicare Rights Center, puts it this way: “Cuts of this magnitude will end Medicaid as we know it, putting older adults’ access to home and community-based long-term care, nursing home services and other essential supports in jeopardy.”

Also, people now receiving health coverage under the Affordable Care Act could find themselves paying much higher premiums if a bill to repeal and replace eventually passes. The Housepassed bill changes the rules for insurance companies so that they can charge older people a lot more than younger ones in states that decide to opt out of certain Obamacare protections.

In a state that opts out, according to the Congressional Budget Office, a 64-year-old with an income of $26,500 could pay as much as $16,000 in annual premiums while a 21-year-old with the same income might pay only $1,700.

People would get tax subsidies depending on their age, but subsidies gradually phase out the higher the income, still leaving older people with a large premium. While this is only an illustration, it’s fair to say they would take a pocketbook hit.

They’d be hit again if a state rejects Obamacare rules that require insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions. If they no longer could buy coverage, they’d have to turn to state high-risk

pools, an old-fashioned solution that didn’t work well.

And then, what about Medicare? One of the biggest changes so far is the elimination of Medicare State Health Insurance Assistance Programs also known as SHIPs. Over 7 million people annually seek help from the SHIPs to understanding Medicare and choose Medigap policies and Medicare Advantage plans.

Because this program may disappear, if you think you’ll need help with Medicare, I suggest you check in with your local program as soon as possible.

Other services seniors rely are also on the chopping block. The Trump administration’s budget calls for cuts in rental and heating assistance. Rental assistance for low-income families would affect some 250,000 households that receive housing vouchers, and the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that about 60,000 of those households include seniors.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) may also disappear. About 40 percent of eligible households include at least one person aged 60 and older.

Cuts to the food stamp program; and the elimination of federal funds to states through what’s called a block grant will also mean some meals on wheels programs will have a harder time serving seniors. Directors of meals programs told me waiting lists in some communities will be much longer.

At stake is what kind of life Americans want for their oldest citizens? Pamela Tainter-Causey, the communications director for the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, offered one answer: “We are saying that seniors are becoming the forgotten class.”

Koepa shoots record-tying round to win first major at US Open

Brooks Koepka was a little busy over the past week and didn’t have a chance to shop for Father’s Day – what he was able to give his dad was more than a gift from any store.

The 27-year-old shot a 16-under par at Erin Hill Golf Course to win the US Open in record-tying fashion and claim the first major championship of his career that had already saw him win all over the globe.

“It’s really special. I look at all these places I won. Just won in Japan, I think, in November,” said Koepka, the first Florida-born US Open champion. “And to win in the European Tour in Turkey and Phoenix. You look back at all the wins, even on the Challenge Tour, it’s pretty cool. I’d love to get a map and just look at all the places I’ve won. It’s pretty cool. But to win my first major in the United States is pretty special. It is Father’s Day, so hopefully - like I said, I didn’t get

him a card, so I really hope this works.”

Koepka won the first-ever Open in Wisconsin and did so on a golf course that eliminated the top three players in the world after 36 holes.

“I played really solid from the moment we got here on Monday and all the way through until today. The ball-striking was pretty solid,” he said. “It had to be today, especially with the wind. And I got out with the putter there for a little bit today and all week. So all around my game is pretty solid and I couldn’t be happier.”

Koepka’s 72-hole total of 272 is tied with four players for the thirdlowest 72-hole score in U.S. Open history. He ties Jack Nicklaus (Baltusrol G.C. (Lower Course), 1993), Lee Janzen (Baltusrol G.C. (Lower Course), 1980), Tiger Woods (Pebble Beach G.L., 2000) and Jim Furyk (Olympia Fields C.C. (North Course), 2003).

RECORD ROUND Koepka’s win was not the only record-setting performance of the weekend.

With an eight-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th hole, Kentuckyborn Justin Thomas – in only his third US Open – set a new record of score in relation to par in any round of the tournament on Saturday.

Thomas bombed a 3-wood to within eight feet on his second shot to set up the record putt.

The nine-under par round of 63 came 44 years to the day from the previous record – held by Johnny Miller, who shot an eight-under 63 at Oakmont.

“That means I’m a part of history,” Thomas said after the round.

“It means I have a lot better chance to win the tournament than I did when the day started. I mean, it’s all pretty self-explanatory, I guess, in terms of what it means. But just for me, I felt like I’ve been playing pretty well all week, and didn’t have quite the numbers to show for it. Obviously, today I definitely had something to show for it.”

Walking to his ball on the green, Thomas knew it was for a 63, but did not know the complete historical value.

“I told Jimmy (Johnson, his caddie) walking up there once I found out we had a putt, I said let’s try to become a part of history here. He said, yeah, let’s do it. But I had no idea in terms of 9-under being the best in the U.S. Open,” Thomas said.

Thomas said he has enjoyed playing at the first-ever US Open in Wisconsin.

“It’s up there with Kapalua in the

But it’s such a cool course standing on the tee,” he said of Erin Hills. “A hole like 3, that hole to me kind of epitomizes a U.S. Open. When you look down and you can see the fescue kind of lining the fairways and the severe slopes and the greens really far away, and you’ve got the bunkers that have the fescue coming out of it, and you can see the slopes on the green and the change of color, that’s cool to me.

“I love golf course architecture.

I would love at some point in my career to be doing that and get involved in it. But it’s a spread-out course. I’m sure the spectators may not like walking it and spectating as much as other courses.

But it’s cool. You get a nice day out there, you get some great scenes.

You get on a couple tees like on 5, or 15, you can see a lot of the course, so that’s pretty cool to kind of see the crowd and stuff. It’s a great track.”

The Wisconsin fans have also treated Thomas well.

“I was blown away by the support that I got today and this week.

It was really cool to be honest. To feel like I had that many (fans), I don’t know if they were faking or what they were doing, but I liked it,” he said. “They made me feel like they were pulling for me and helping me through that finish.

The roars in a major in a U.S. Open are really tough to compare to anything. Just to hear all the people yelling my name and cheering me on between holes and in between shots is pretty special, so it’s a lot of fun.”

CAPTAIN AMERICA While Wisconsin native Steve Stricker and 28-year-old superstar Rickie Fowler may be the fan favorites, native Texan and Ryder Cup standout Patrick Reed is earning fans this weekend with his play and his wardrobe.

Before Thomas went nine under par, Reed missed a putt that would have tied Miller’s record round, but he still managed to card a seven-under and put himself in contention – all while wearing the red, white and blue all tournament.

Over the weekend, Reed pulled out some of his Ryder Cup wardrobe and plans to don the colors of Old Glory tomorrow as well. “(This was the) first time I’ve worn them in competition, yes.

I’ve worn them a lot around the house and stuff like that and practice. Yeah, it was the first time popping them back out in play.

They felt good,” Reed said of his Ryder Cup blue pants. “I think the biggest thing is the pants I’ve been wearing throughout the past couple of years, they’re the kind of material that if it rains, they repel water, as well. And whenever the PGA Tour comes into town, even if it’s supposed to be bright and sunny, you have a chance there’s going to be some rain or some kind of conditions. I’ve kind of stayed on the safe side there. But this week it’s red, white and blue week. “It’s awesome hearing the fans yelling “USA” and those kind of things.”

Reed admitted he is not the sole decision maker when it comes to his outfit.

“I have any wife, my motherin-law and sister-in-law.

And they mainly tell me, “This is what you’re going to wear.” I just say, “Okay. Sounds good, hun.” You know, happy wife, happy life,” Reed said. “I just go out there and when they decide red, white and blue this week, I was all for it. Just kind of bring back not only the patriotism, but also bring back some of that Ryder Cup feelings. I felt like I was getting it going a little bit today, especially on that 14, 15, 16 stretch, just the fans started going crazy. Outside of just wearing the colors, Reed said he understands the importance of winning the US Open as an American.

“It’s where we’re from. It’s home,” he said. “To go out and just play well tomorrow and have a chance to win the golf tournament would mean a lot. I kind of do what I need to do today, shoot a low number, get myself back in this golf tournament. I was thinking if you can get 4 or 5-under par today, it would be a pretty good score to get yourself in the golf tournament. Go out and shoot 7 and exceed where my goal was, that’s always a positive. It just kind of builds up momentum and carries it over for tomorrow.”

FATHER LOVE After the first round, it was setting up to be a great storyline during Sunday’s final round as former major champion and Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III was on the bag for his son, Davis Love IV – or Dru has he is called, which is short for quadruple – the fourth in the lineage.

Dru shot a 75 on Friday and missed the cut by one shot.

He still had a great time in his first major with his dad as his caddie.

“Saturday when we were pull-

ing up I was a little excited and I started grabbing all of the bags. I grabbed my bag, and I grabbed this and that, and he goes, whoa, whoa, whoa. This is my job this week,” Dru said. “So I’m used to getting his stuff out of the car and toting it to the locker room and following him around and doing whatever he needs.

“For the first two days it felt weird having him do the things that I’m usually doing for him, you know, handing him a golf ball or cleaning a club. But he’s caddied for me before. We’ve won some tournaments together before, and I know what to expect from him, and he knows what to expect from me. But I definitely think when he’s walking down the range to give me golf balls it takes him about 25 minutes because everyone stops and is talking to him. Saying oh, it’s the first time we’ve ever seen your legs and this and that. So it’s definitely been weird for him.

Dru, who is the third Love to play in the US Open, said his dad has passed on a lot of knowledge over the years.

“He has so much advice. He passes a ton of things on from his dad, my grandfather, who also played in the U.S. Open.” Dru said. “I think he respected him so much, his father, and listened to him so much that he passes on the same things that he told my dad.”

Carry any leftover money into next month DEAR DAVE, When you use the envelope system, what should you do with any leftover money?

MANDY DEAR MANDY, My suggestion would be to carry it over to the next month. Lots of folks don’t use all the money in their clothing envelope during a month. There’s nothing wrong with letting a little extra build up in one of your categories if you don’t spend it all in a given month or two.

You should be hitting the budget pretty close each month on categories like food. Getting out of debt and managing your money wisely doesn’t mean going hungry. If you do end up with a little left over in the food envelope, treat yourself to a nice dinner out, or buy something that’s food-oriented.

But it’s okay to carry a few categories over from month to month.

Just make sure you don’t get crazy and blow that money on something outside the intended category, or on stuff you really don’t need.

It was very kind of your grandparents to buy you a gift like this, but I think you can do better. You didn’t mention an amount, but let’s say you’ve got $10,000 in that company’s stock. Now, would you buy the stock if you had $10,000 sitting on the table? Most people, myself included, would say no because there’s too much risk. I wouldn’t advise having the majority of your wealth — the highest percentage of your net worth — tied up in one single company. That’s bad news.
