VILLAGE NEWS

Village board, mayor officially sworn in By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff @BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com

Continuing his 31-year career in Bolingbrook, Roger Claar was recently sworn in as Mayor of Bolingbrook, along with three veteran trustees and one newcomer to the village board. Claar thanked the community, “friend or foe,” and expressed his disappointed in an election that turned “ugly and nasty.” “I am not corrupt as was sug-

gested in flyers. I have not profited in millions by land deals. I’ve been honored to be sworn in 9,10 times as mayor and a couple times before that as trustee. I have had a total of 37 years of municipal government, clearly some people think that is too much but I have been duly elected and I will perform and carry out these duties as I was sworn to,” said Claar. “..We do the best we can, we study what we can. We get the best info we can; we listen to our staff

and take their advice and direction, we discuss it and take it apart. Low bids prevail in this town, always have. And while I am here, it always will; to suggest otherwise is just wrong. Bolingbrook has been selected a couple times this spring as one of the top ten places to live in Chicagoland, that didn’t happen by accident, that’s the work of a whole lot of people. We will continue to strive to maintain that same popularity. “I am honored to be put in this

position and we will move forward and have Bolingbrook be the best there is. We used to be compared to other communities—why can’t you be like Downer’s Grove or Naperville? Naperville is 200 years old; Downers Grove is 100 years old. You look at at what we have accomplished in 50 years...I am honored to have been a part of it for 80 percent of that time; we have accomplished a whole lot with a variety of trustees and staff and I would stand them up against anybody to con-

tinue to move forward,” said Claar. Also sworn in, running together on the same platform, were veteran clerk Carol Penning, trustees Mike Lawler and Maria Zarate. Trustee Sheldon Watts, spoke of his gratitude at serving on the board and vowed he would remain committed to Bolingbrook and continue his involvement with a variety of organizations. Watts was unseated by Robert Jaskiewicz, the only member of the Bolingbrook United Party.
