VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT
Tibbott welcomes guest readers to fair Among the guests were Univision Chicago TV anchor Erika Maldonado Tibbott Elementary School in Bolingbrook added a new wrinkle to its annual reading fair in May… utilizing 2019 Illinois Reads titles to “get kids into books.” Tibbott Principal Ana Wilson and her amazing team used Title I funds to purchase dozens of Illinois Reads books from Anderson’s Bookstore in Downers Grove and gave them to select 2nd, 4th and 5th graders to not only read but also do visual or digital art projects about their books. “It’s such a valuable instructional time for us because they read their book and come back when they’re finished and think that’s it,” said Tibbott K-5 reading and math Intervention and Enrichment Coordinator Cindy Zylstra. “But we link everything back to the Common Core Standards by helping them think about it until they understand all the learning pieces of the project. Then they set it to some kind of art.” While 2nd, 4th and 5th grad-
ers were displaying their five-week projects for parents and fellow students during the school’s three-day Reading Fair, kindergartners as well as 1st and 3rd graders hosted mystery readers who delighted the students by reading age appropriate 2019 Illinois Reads selections. Among the guests were Univision Chicago TV anchor Erika Maldonado, Miss Heartland Annika Strolle, Illinois Reads founder and chairperson Tammy Potts, several Bolingbrook Trustees, a representative from the Will County Executive’s office and several Valley View School District 365U administrators including Superintendent Dr. James Mitchem and Assistant Superintendent Rachel Kinder. “The way to spark kids’ imagination nowadays is through reading,” Maldonado said. “We had so much fun with the books we read. The kids were so welcoming. I hope that with a positive experience like this, they will pick up many, many books
in years to come.” Zylstra pointed out that not every 2nd, 4th and 5th grader utilized Illinois Reads books for their projects, but those that did “dived head first” into them. “We targeted specific books for specific kids,” she said. “For example, Cardboard Kingdom…it’s such a fascinating book. We knew exactly who was going to read this book. My 5th graders tackled it. In fact, they were supposed to do a Google slide show but they didn’t want to search for all the images so they hand drew the images. “I had a couple of excellent readers who were having trouble finding a book because they couldn’t find one that was going to meet them at their level,” she added. “I walked them into the Principal’s office to look at the Illinois Reads books. They gave it a lot of thought and not only picked out one, but also wanted to take another one with them because it looked good too. These books are a collection of really high interest books.” Most of the Reading Fair project work was done during classroom time. That’s why, for the first time
since Tibbott first held a reading fair, parents were invited to view the projects. “After four or five weeks of work, we thought they should come see it,” Zylstra said. “A kid goes to a soccer game once a week and a parent is usually there, so we thought after hours and hours of each child’s effort someone should come see this too.” Some fair visitors were seen Facetiming the event to relatives. Others used their phones to video the projects and said they planned on showing the video to neighbors and family members who couldn’t make it. Every visitor received “welcome kits” that included an Illinois State Library book mark, reading tips in both English and Spanish, a pencil, Post-It notes and a treat. “Having Illinois Reads involved was huge for us,” Zylstra said. “Every year our fair gets a little bigger and better. This year it was a LOT better.” Each classroom in Tibbott received free Illinois Reads bookmarks as well as free Illinois Reads posters, courtesy of the Illinois
Reading Council, the sponsoring organization for Illinois Reads. ”We need to do this again next year,” said Principal Wilson. “When that list of (2020) Illinois Reads books comes out again and our Title I funds are available, we will definitely be ordering some. Maybe we can even have one of the Illinois Reads authors come in and work with the kids. I think the combination of having a reading fair while at the same time promoting the Illinois Reads books and having mystery readers helped the kids understand how important reading is to people all over the world.” Tibbott Elementary School is one of 12 elementary schools in Will County’s Valley View School District 365U. Some 80 percent of Tibbott’s roughly 540 students are considered low income. The school is also one of several ELL centers in the school district. More information on Illinois Reads is available at www.IlinoisReads.org. Story Contributed by Mr. Larry Randa, former VVSD Community Relations Director.

Emergency fund can be filled with additional income Q. My fiancé and I just started your class, but we’re having trouble getting our beginner emergency fund together. We both work full-time, and I make $59,000 a year while he has worked in retail for several years and makes
$22,000 to $25,000. I’m trying to manage a couple of side jobs, but we just can’t seem to get our budget to work in a way that will allow us to save anything. Can you help us? A. First of all, your finances should remain separate until you’re married. There’s shouldn’t be a “we” in terms of money at this point. You can always run a single budget that you both look at and
prepare for after you’re married, but right now he shouldn’t be paying your bills and you shouldn’t be paying his bills. The biggest problem I see is that he’s making no money. He needs to get a better job. He can’t pay his bills, and in the process, he’s sucking you dry. I’m sure your fiancé is a good, hard-working man, but he needs to make a serious career shift soon • like now!
In the meantime, this guy needs to take on a part-time job or two until he gets that career shifted. It’s not really a budgeting problem you’re looking at. It’s an income issue. Lewis’ Kianna Clark takes second in the hammer throw at Division II Track and Field Championships
Lewis University’s Kianna Clark (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) finished second in the hammer throw with a career-best and school record throw on Thursday on the first day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas. Clark, competing fifth in the first flight, opened the competition with a throw of 55.50 meters (182’1”) and was in third after the first round. She fouled on her second attempt to drop to fourth in the standings. Clark remained fourth after third attempt was 53.77 meters (176’5”). She qualified for finals but dropped to seventh after her fourth throw. Clark rebounded on her fifth attempt with a heave of 57.35 meters (188’ 2”) which was a personal best by 1.74 meters and moved her into second place behind Texas A&M-Kingsville Rachael Somoye who threw the hammer 57.56 meters (188’ 1”) in her first attempt. Clark had one more chance to pass Somoye but her final attempt went 57.01 meters (187’ 0”) to secure second place. The secondplace finish also garners First Team All-American honors for Clark which is the first in her career. “Kianna had a great week of preparation,” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “We hoped to win the first flight and sneak into the fi-
nal, and it played out perfect. “Coach Red (Brent Graham) has been a great addition for the throwers, and with those two working together, Kianna was able to jump on a great opportunity.” The Flyers had one other competitor compete on Thursday with Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./ Romeoville) competing in the long jump. All three of her attempts in the first round would have been top five but she committed close fouls on all three attempts. • The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday (May 22) that former Lewis University cross country and track and field great Malgorzata Biela has been inducted into the USTFCCCA Division II Hall of Fame. This is the 24th class to be inducted into the NCAA Division II Track and Field Athlete Hall of Fame which dates back to its opening in 1996. Biela is one of four inductees in this year’s class. Other inductees include Daniel Kirwwa (Harding University), Hyacinth Robinson (Kentucky State University) and Vashti Thomas (Academy of Art University). In all, Biela captured a total of six national championships during her four-year stat at Lewis (1994-98). She helped the Flyers to a tie for second overall as a team in 1997. On the track side, Biela collected six individual national championships, including winning back-toback national championships in the indoor 800 meter run in 1995 and 1996 and the outdoor 1500 meter run in 1997 and 1998. She also added the outdoor 800 meter run in 1995 and the outdoor 3000
meter run in 1997 for good measure. Biela was an 11-time Track and Field All-American and won GLVC Championships in the 1500 meter run in 1996 and the 3000 meter run in 1998. She rewrote the school record books as she holds top time for the program outdoors in the 1500 and 3000, to go with the second overall mark in the 800 and sixth
in the 400. Indoors she ranks in the top-10 across five events with her best being the 800 and 1000 (both second all-time). Biela is the fourth Lewis student-athlete to join the USTFCCCA NCAA DII Track and Field Athlete Hall of Fame, joining Charles Mulinga (Class of 2001), Duane Chappell (2015) and Kasia Arient (2016).
