Cavalcade of Planes returns June 3-4 Express Entry tickets may be purchased online ahead of time

Bringing aviation up close and personal the Cavalcade of Planes at the Bolingbrook Clow International Airport is designed to promote aviation in a fun, family event.

This year’s event, hosted by the Village of Bolingbrook, marks the 17h year since it began. From just a couple hundred people and a handful of planes, the annual event has now grown into a muchanticipated family event.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 3-4 at the airport, 130 Clow International Parkway, Bolingbrook.

The event will feature skydiving, formation flying, helicopter demonstrations, and more.

New plane manufacturers including Cessna, Piper, Diamond, Beechcraft, Cirrus, Light-Sport Aircraft, jets and helicopters will be on display.

To avoid long lines, new this year, Express Entry tickets may be purchased online. Patrons who purchase tickets online will be able to enter through a separate gate and just swipe the barcode for entry. The cost is $4 for adults for one-day; $6 for two-days and $2 for children for one day and $3 for two days; free for 5 and under.

One-day ticket prices will double at the door and two-day ticket will not be available.

The Illinois Aviation Museum is hosting a variety of events, including a simulator ride. Parachutists will be performing twice an hour; and food, drink and ice cream will be available in the World War II in-

spired Canteen in one of the airport’s hangars.

You can also reserve a ride in a piece of history. WWII Warbird

rides are available in a North American T-6. Cost is $250 for a 15-minute ride or $415 for 30 minutes. To pre-reserve a day and

time call 260-450-7350. Helicopter rides are $40 per person and $10 off for any military, fire, police or EMS personnel.

Art Society celebrating art at library Community invited 4 to 7 p.m.

Looking to bring more color to life, a group of local artists have been coming together to promote the Romeoville Art Society, and will be hosting its first inaugural gala.

In a grassroots effort to celebrate the beauty and culture art can bring to the community, the group has been calling on artists to share their talent through a monthly contest to showcase their art, offering prizes donated by local sponsors for entries of photography and poetry.

Each month the art has been on display at the White Oak Library District Romeoville Branch where those interested are invited to vote for their favorites through a ballot box on location.

The community is now invited from 4 to 7 p.m. this Thursday, May 25 at the White Oak Library, 201 Normantown Road, for the inaugural Romeoville Art Society Gala which will showcase all artists who

have participated and also include pieces available for purchase, light refreshments, and poetry readings.

Organizer Heather Jelic said, seeing other nearby towns like Lockport and Naperville with an art presence, she simply thought, “Why not Romeoville?” “I’ve always found myself loving the arts, and felt it would be good for the community,” said Jelic.

The idea began to evolve and she

began a simple Facebook group that has now grown to a sizable community that is encouraging others to “Taking part to Share the love of Art.” The group’s mission” is to enhance life in Romeoville and the surrounding communities by sharing our passions for the arts in all its forms. Our purpose is to create a network of fellowship and a supportive environment to nurture not only our own unique and individual creativity, but that of the communities we live, work and serve within.”

Jelic encourages others to also take part if interested in any fashion and explains the Romeoville Art Society was created to be a community of fellowship for local artists and art enthusiasts who have an interest in meeting other like-minded creative people with a passion for art and are inspired to share that passion with others.

Lipinski introduces bill for preapprenticeship programs Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL3) has introduced the Apprenticeship Improvement Act of 2017 (H.R. 2377) to help expand the use of pre-apprenticeship programs.

This legislation would amend the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act to include preapprenticeship programs, which would allow U.S. Department of Labor funds currently distributed to states to be used to help reimburse sponsors of pre-apprenticeship programs in the same manner as they do sponsors of apprenticeship programs. Apprenticeships are a commonly used workforce training model that combines onthe-job experience with classroom instruction.

Registered apprenticeship programs are those that have been certified by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship and/or with the state’s apprenticeship agency. Participants in a Registered Apprenticeship program can expect the typical apprenticeship experience but are ensured a wage, a full-time position, and an industry-wide recognized credential upon successful completion of the program.

The average starting wage for former registered apprentices is $50,000.

“Pre-apprenticeship programs provide potential applicants with the chance to see all that apprenticeships have to offer,” stated Rep. Lipinski. “Participants receive hands-on training and complete coursework designed to prepare applicants for a Registered Apprenticeship program. My bill making pre-apprenticeship programs eligible for federal funding that is already available to states will help train more people for good-paying middle-class jobs that they otherwise would not have had an oppor-

tunity to attain.”

Although there is widespread political and industry support for registered apprenticeships and the apprenticeship model, a recent study conducted by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce predicts that by 2020 there will be a shortage of roughly five million workers with postsecondary credentials in the United States. Congressman Lipinski’s legislation will help more

Manley urges not to cut heroin program funding In response to news that President Trump has proposed slashing funding federal programs that help fight the heroin epidemic across the country, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, introduced legislation urging the Illinois Congressional Delegation to protect this funding.

“In 2012, Will County had 53 heroin-related deaths and community leaders from across the area came together to address this deadly

epidemic,” Manley said. “During 2013 and 2014 when outreach efforts were the greatest, the number of heroin-related deaths dropped.

Last year, when the slightest focus was taken off the heroin epidemic, Will County saw 77 heroin-related deaths. We have seen first-hand how many lives drug prevention programs can save, which is why it is important to protect funding for drug prevention programs from devastating cuts.”

Currently, the Trump Administration is recommending slashing funding the Office of the National Drug Control Policy by 95 percent from $388 million nationally to just $24 million.

These cuts would zero out funding for their high-intensity drug trafficking and drug-free communities support programs. Manley introduced House Resolution 384 urging Congress and the President

to continue funding these vital programs.

Previously, Manley has worked with Democrats and Republicans across the state to address the heroin crisis in Illinois, including serving on the House Heroin Task Force. “The amount of money that is saved through cutting these federal drug prevention programs is miniscule compared to the entire budget,” Manley said.

“However, within our communities the benefits of these programs are astronomical. I will continue my fight on the state level to address the heroin epidemic across Illinois and in Will County. We must also hold Washington politicians accountable to their pledges to address this crisis as well.”

Your help needed in locating photos of Illinois Vietnam veterans Photos needed of Illinois vets for Wall of Faces in Washington, D.C. When the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was finished in 1983, the wall listed approximately 58,000 servicemen and women who had either died in action or went missing in action during the Vietnam War. Because of a fire at a government storage facility in 1973, the U.S. military lost millions of personnel records, including many of those who were listed on the wall.

Although the military and other organizations made efforts to recover lost data, 24,000 veterans listed on the wall had no photo in their military records in 2013.

Thanks to a coordinated effort among Illinois newspapers, nearly 100 photos of Illinois veterans have been located and submitted to the Wall of Faces (available at: http:// www.vvmf.org/wall-of-faces/); however, as of May 1, Illinois still has 528 service members who do not have a photo in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s database.

We need your help. Below is a list of servicemen and/or women from DuPage, Will, Kendall and collar Cook counties that do not have a photo on the Wall of Faces.

Do you know any of them? Did you go to high school or serve with one of these men or women?

Check your photo archives and yearbooks.

Talk to neighbors and former classmates. Please help honor these veterans by putting a face to the name.

According to the VVMF, the wall was constructed to remind everyone that the names on the wall “represent unique people with hopes, dreams and desires—people who were loved and who are missed every day by someone they left behind.”

“It is important for us to honor

these people who served and sacrificed for their country. But, we should also remember that they were people, just like us. They enjoyed crazy adventures with high school friends.

They had crushes, fell in love and got married. Some even had children. They were people with special talents and many goals. There are so many stories on The Wall—stories of people as diverse as our nation itself.”

Please help honor these young men and women who gave their lives in Southeast Asia.

The first step to telling their stories is to locate their photos.

Spartan relays, Bolingbrook’s Walters take second place at state

CHARLESTON – Heading into the Class 3A state girls track and field meet in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, it had been five years since Romeoville had placed a relay team on the medal stand at the state meet and 17 years since it had a team place higher than third.

The Spartans erased all that as they placed both the 400-and800-meter relay teams second in the state.

The team of senior Nia Lee, junior Jahnetta Jones, senior Kiara Carter and junior Kaniyah Rush posted a time of 47.67 in the 400 relay, equaling the place of the 2000 and 1984 4x100 teams.

In the 800 relay, junior Katie Kerwin team with Jones, Carter and Rush and advanced in 1 minute, 39.42.

The 4x200 team had only placed twice in Romeoville history, sixth in 2012 and seventh in 1985.

Individually, Jones was fourth in

the 200 dash in 25.25.

She joins only Almoug Israel in 2000 as Spartans to earn three medals in one state tournament.

“This feels great to come out here and compete with people that have the same energy and same passion and want to work hard,” Jones said. “There were a lot of things in the season that could have held me back and I overcame that. I am really proud of this entire team and we came out here and did the best that we could “ Lee advanced in the long jump, posting a qualifying leap of 17-feet, 11-inches, but did not medal.

Bolingbrook sophomore Kayla Walters was second in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.47.

She is the first Raider to ever medal in the event.

“I was trying to focus on my own race and clear out everything else,” Walters said. “I am proud of myself. Last year as a freshman, I didn’t even make it to state and now to come here and take second SEE STATE PAGE 10

Walters (47.21) and fellow Raider sophomore Katelyn Johnson (46.27) competed in the 300 low hurdles, but did not make the finals.

The duo also teamed with senior Claire Young and junior Kayla Perry in the 400 relay and posted a 54.74 after a mishap with the baton exchange.

Perry posted a leap of 17-07 in the long jump, while also competing in the 400 dash (58.70) and 100 dash (12.42).

Young also competed in the high jump (5-03) and the 200 dash (26.08), but missed finals.

In the 200, Romeoville’s Rush posted a time of 25.12 as well as running a 12.24 in the 100 dash.

Jones also competed in the 100 dash and ran a 12.30.

Bolingbrook’s Young posted a 12.39 in the 100, while senior Tyronay Taylor leapt 35-feet in the triple jump.

Lewis hires Quigley-Smith from USF Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced on Monday (May 22) that he has hired Samantha Quigley Smith as the 13th head women’s basketball

coach in school-history.

“The Lewis women’s basketball program has a forged a formidable path at the Division II level and we certainly feel that Coach (Sa-

mantha) Quigley Smith can help us continue on this path of excellence,” Planek said.

Quigley comes to Lewis via the University of St. Francis in Joliet,

where the Fighting Saints recorded a mark of 101-62 (.62) in her five seasons (2012-17) as head coach.

She served as an assistant coach for USF in 2011-12 under her uncle and former Lewis University head women’s basketball coach Brian Michalak. Michalak was Lewis’ head women’s basketball coach from 1993-2002.

“I am so very excited to accept the position as Lewis University’s head women’s basketball coach,” Quigley Smith said. “Coaching at the NCAA level and in such a great conference like the Great Lakes Valley Conference has been a dream of mine and I cannot wait to get started.”

Quigley Smith believes that Lewis is a perfect fit for her family.

“What attracted me to the position was that Lewis is a Catholic Institution with a similar value system (to St. Francis),” Quigley Smith continued. “The athletic department has been extremely successful and I certainly look forward to being a part of that!”

While excited for the next chapter in her life, Quigley Smith is thankful for her time in Joliet.

“My experiences at St. Francis have certainly prepared me for this opportunity and I cannot thank them enough,” Quigley Smith said.

“USF gave me my first start at a young age and that is something I will forever be grateful for.

In the past two seasons, the Fighting Saints have registered a mark of 62-7 (.899) with two Top 10 finishes in the NAIA Division II Coaches Poll, including a No. 1 ranking in the final 2017 poll. Her 2015-16 squad was the first USF team to advance to the NAIA National Tournament in 13 seasons.

In that span, Quigley Smith mentored All-Americans in Charnelle Reed and Jordan Giddings.

Last year, Quigley Smith guided USF to a mark of 34-2, helping the Fighting Saints to an undefeated slate in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and a berth in the NAIA Division II Semifinals.

I-55 study pact gets another amendment Construction still not expected to begin for a decade or more

It’s been a long-standing topic of discussion for anyone who has ever been frustrated on the interstate.

For more than a decade, the process has been slowly unfolding to build a new interchange along I-55, to provide better connectibility to Plainfield, Bolingbrook, and Romeoville. A move by the village board this month hopes to further that plan.

The project began when Bolingbrook completed an access justification study for the expansion of the I-55/Route 126 interchange, and Romeoville com-

pleted an access justification study for a new interchange at I-55 and Lockport Street.

The Federal Highway Administration determined that both locations had to be included if a phase one engineering study/report was conducted in the future.

In 2009, Bolingbrook and Romeoville entered an intergovernmental agreement to advance the phase one study. The total cost of the project at that time was estimated at around $2.6 million, with a federal grant of $1.469 million allocated to assist with related costs.

But Plainfield wanted in on the project.

“Plainfield was concerned 15 years ago about this project be-

cause of the impact of local traffic within our community,” said Allen Persons, Director of Public Works.

“In 2003, the village passed a resolution expressing concerns about traffic on Lockport Street, and that the only way the village would approve that interchange would be if there was some bypass included as well. So, that’s what started the conversation.”

In July of 2011, Plainfield entered an intergovernmental agreement with Bolingbrook and Romeoville, where the village agreed to fund 37 percent of the cost of the interstate interchange project as the local share. In return, Plainfield became actively involved in the decisionmaking process regarding the design of the proposed improvements at both locations.

“At that time, there was an amendment to the intergovern-

mental agreement that was created, where there was a cost-sharing system set up, where Plainfield could share with the additional costs, and we could all utilize and benefit from the grant that was going to be provided by the federal government,” Persons said.

On May 15, the board approved another intergovernmental agreement based on changes to the project.

Because an extensive amount of environmental studies and reports have been completed over the last seven years, additional funding is required to complete the phase one engineering study.

The updated total cost is estimated at approximately $3.26 million. The new agreement requires all three municipalities to provide additional funding to complete the phase one study report.

The additional contribution that is estimated to be paid by Plainfield is $212,995. This includes a 5 percent contingency that may not be required.

“This gives us a seat at the table in decisions as far as design is concerned at both of the locations, and I believe it helps protect our residents from a future improvement that could be detrimental as far as traffic is concerned,” Persons said.

The engineering firm in charge of phase one, V3 Engineering of Woodridge, is expected to make a presentation on phase one of the project at a future date.

Because the project is wholly dependent on the federal government, there is no official timeline to see ground broken for the interchange project. Persons said as a long-term project, the timeline is expected to be ten years or more.

Giving wisely is a good lesson for son DEAR DAVE, Our son is 13, and he wants to give half the money he received for his birthday to the nursery at our church. They need new baby toys and things like that. Should we let him give that much, or should we tell him that maybe 25 percent is enough?

KYLE DEAR KYLE, I hope you’re proud of this kid.

He’s a got a good heart, and it’s probably a reflection of the way his mom and dad are raising him.

I like this a lot.

I would very gently, and without any commanding or control verbiage, use some examples from the Bible when talking to him. There are several things to be learned about money from Scrip-

ture, and the concepts of generosity and giving are in there. There’s also a verse that says we need to take care of our own households first. Another one says in the house of the wise are stores of food and oil.

We need to do all of these things with money — in balance.

Thoughtfully and prayerfully decide what your giving amount will

be, so that you don’t destroy your ability to save and do other important things. Talk to him about these concepts, then ask him to wait two or three days and think about his decision.

If he comes back and says he still wants to give half of it, I would encourage him to do so. But slow things down a little, and make sure this isn’t a knee-jerk reaction.

You need to be a wise giver, not an impulsive giver!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are currently in Baby Step 2, and paying off all our debt except for our home. A friend recently told us to pay off everything except for the credit card debt. She says we can then settle for a far less amount and not

have so much money going out the door. This feels a little unethical to me. What are your thoughts?

JENNIFER DEAR JENNIFER, There’s a good reason this idea feel unethical to you — it is unethical! Would a good friend, a smart friend, encourage you to do something as dishonorable as not pay a bill you’re morally and legally obligated to pay? I don’t think so.

If you’re able to pay your bills, you pay your bills. It’s as simple as that. Now, if you honestly can’t pay the bill, and you have to settle upon a mutually agreed upon

amount with the creditor or collector, then it’s okay at that point to try and reach a settlement.

Otherwise, it’s a simple question of ethics. Pay the bill!
