VVSD reviews lockdown procedures, task force Active shooter scenario is vital component to new trainings

With school safety at the forefront for the nation, the Valley View School District is reviewing procedures and suggesting a change in accordance with national task force data.

VVSD Director of School Safety and Security Carter Larry recently informed the school board of an initiative to incorporate new safety procedures.

“The mass shooting at Columbine changed everything,” said Larry. “Prior to Columbine, no one truly understood what an active shooter was. There was no lockdown procedures established and law enforcement would wait for a S.W.A.T. team to respond.”

However, what most people do not realize, said Larry, is that for a long time the action of a lockdown, instituted in the 1970s, was put in place for drive-by shootings---essentially dealing with a shooter that remained on the outside.

“The problem is that lockdown drills were meant to safeguard against a shooter attacking from outside a school for a few

seconds, not a gunman inside a school with a semi-automatic rifle for five minutes,” said Larry. “With every unfortunate mass shooting at a school, law enforcement and school officials have learned something. There is a need to deviate from the traditional lockdown procedure, and implement training that will maximize and increase student’s odds of survival.”

A recent task force now looks at enforcing different procedures like A.L.I.C.E, Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate or “Run, Hide, Fight.” According to Larry such multi-optioned training enables the public to respond based on their circumstances and allows for less casualties.

Currently there are four certified ALICE instructors to train the district. The cost for all instructors to become certified would total nealy $3,000. However, the Romeoville Police Department is looking to host a class, which would allow officers to attend free.

Larry said he was advising the board of the initiative now, stating that it is a lengthy process that will take strategy and proper implementation.

“This will not take place overnight--it is a daunting task, but we need to move in this direction,” said Larry.

He estimated the process could take up to two years to be put in place using best practices and committee help to enact.

Police take to roofs for Special Olympics Romeoville officers set goal of $10K for Law Enforcement Torch Run

Local cops hit the roof last week, aiming to raise funds for the Special Olympics.

Romeoville Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 15 hung out on the

rooftops of two local Dunkin’ Donuts soliciting donations.

The department was aiming for a $10,000 goal. Each year, hundreds of law enforcement officers from throughout Illinois stake out more than 230 Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops, to raise awareness and donations for the Law

Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $39 million over 30 years while increasing awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their accomplishments.

Each year, more than 3,000 officers cover 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope through the streets of their hometowns and to the State Summer Games in

Normal in June.

It is the single largest yearround fundraising vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.

The intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects have two goals: to raise money and increase public awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Illinois is a not-for-profit organization offering year-round training and competition in 19 sports for

nearly 22,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and nearly 21,000 young athletes ages 2-7, with and without intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics programs enhance physical fitness, motor skills, self-confidence, social skills and encourage family support.

The first Special Olympics games were held at Soldier Field in July,1968; the program now is in more than 170 countries

Piyesta Pinoy delivering hours of entertainment June 9 marks all-day celebration of food and culture of the Philippines at Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center So much entertainment, activity, food, excitement and fun for the whole family it should be a two-day event, Piyesta Pinoy, the Midwest’s biggest Filipino festival, promises “never a dull moment” of 12-hours of merrymaking on Saturday, June 9, at the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center, Bolingbrook Village Hall & Town Center 375 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook Now on its fifth year, the festival day begins with a 5K Run Roll and Walk at 9 a.m. organized by Gawad Kalinga, and a volleyball tournament from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. presented by Froghops Sports. A parade at 11 a.m., officially marks the start of the festival.

The main stage entertainment begins simultaneously with the parade with Rondalla music by Chicago Angklung Rondalla Ensemble, followed by the national anthems performed by Silayan Choir with Emil Nicolasin, and the introduction of Philippine Consulate and City of Bolingbrook officials.

The cultural segment is scheduled from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and features performances by PACF Performing Arts, Bibbak Illinois, Philippine American Seniors Association of Chicago (PASAC), Philippine Dance Troupe of Fox Cities, UIC FIA Cultural, Lane Tech Filipino Club and Kulturo.

The one-hour technical break between main stage segments allows people to get food and join in

the many activities.

The Variety Show segment, from 2–4 p.m., showcases the talents of: the Silayan Choir; Seafood City’s Sing Sikat finalists Richelle Lu, Willy Lucas and Nina Mae Vidal; and an urban dance number by UIC FIA Modern.

This segment concludes with three bands: Ghost in the Backseat, Chasing 90 and the Filipino Musicians of Chicago Band (FMOC).

The TFC Celebrity hours is from 5–7 p.m. and this year’s celebrity guest is Filipino recording artist and actor Inigo Pascual, known for his 2016 hit single, “Dahil Sa’yo,” the first No. 1 song on Billboard Philippines’ then-new Philippine Top 20 chart. Supporting him will be comic POCA from California.

The opening act for the TFC celebrity hour features Sing Sikat champion MJ Sumila and LOL segment with games and contests.

New this year is the dance party segment from 8 to 10 p.m.

Four live bands and a DJ playing non-stop dance party music make this segment worth staying on the festival grounds for two more hours.

Enjoy the live band music by Above N’ Beyond, Soundredd, The Blue Marlin Band, and a collaboration between Above N’Beyond and Filipino Musicians of Chicago Band (FMOC).

WWII caused changes to way of life, economy in IL Thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state

BY ANDY KRAVETZ OF THE JOURNAL STAR Washington, Illinois, resident Mary Kerr said the war caused everyone to sacrifice.

“When we went into Iraq in 2001, there was no difference in my life because we went to war. But then, everyone was affected; from Victory Gardens to rationing of items to the draft, everyone was in,” she said.

Mothers saved tin cans and foil. Life went on, she said, but it was different.

“We went on with the churches and the schools, but it wasn’t the same. The Boy Scouts went on but they had paper drives,” Kerr said. “Nothing was the same as it was before Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor.”

THOUSANDS ENLISTED FROM ILLINOIS When war was declared in December 1941, thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state either en route to or arriving at training stations.

The U.S. Naval Station Great Lakes had opened prior to World War I as a recruit training center, but by the early 1930s enrollment had slowed. World War II boosted the population at the station from 6,000 to 68,000, according to the Navy. In all, about 1 million sailors trained at the facility in North Chicago until the war ended in 1945.

Thousands of others, including many World War I veterans, flocked to the Illinois State Militia, also known as the Reserve Militia, where they agreed to serve for two years. They stood watch over bridges, railroads and other transit centers. When the war ended, hundreds were activated to serve as shuttle drivers in Chicago as the large number of GIs returning overwhelmed buses and trains, according the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

By the end of 1945, Illinois had registered 1,954,674 men between the ages of 18 and 38 at 361 separate local draft boards. Of these, 629,516 were called to serve. An additional 328,338 enlisted

of their own accord bringing the total number of men from Illinois entering the services to 957,854.

The number of Illinois women joining the military during the war was 13,587.

Counting those who already were in the military and those whose National Guard units were activated, Illinois supplied the U.S. armed forces with nearly 1 million of its citizens during the course of the war.

From Dec. 7, 1941, through Sept. 2, 1945, 17,521 Illinois servicemen and women were killed in combat or later died of wounds or injuries sustained in battle.

CATERPILLAR’S ROLE In Peoria, production of earth-moving equipment made by Caterpillar Inc. had already picked up in pace due to the federal Lend-Lease program, supplying goods and war material to Allied countries. Caterpillar tractors were already being used by the Allies in the early stages of World War II, according to Journal Star archives. But once the United States entered the war, production escalated. Bulldozers were vital to the war effort as they allowed creation of air fields and the cleanup of debris after battle.

Central Illinois factories geared up for greater production when the United States entered the war. The Defense Department initially asked for a variety of equipment from Caterpillar, including smaller items such as transmissions for tanks and undercarriages for howitzers.

Then, according to a Caterpillar historian, the Defense Department decreed for production to switch exclusively to motor graders and track-type tractors on a large scale.

Tom Emery, a freelance writer from Carlinville, said the state’s economy was booming during the war. Factories were humming with wartime activity.

“The industrial cities were cranking out products that were war related,” Emery said.

Many blacks moved to Illinois during the war, particularly to Chicago for jobs. And female employment grew by 50 percent.

ROSIE THE RIVETER One of those Rosie the Riveters was Ruth Lockart, who recently participated in the oral history project at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. The

project was to reach out to World War II veterans and those who grew up during that time.

Lockart worked as a riveter at the Howard Aircraft Corp. in Chicago. When America went to war, she was on the family farm in Paris but she wanted to get involved in the war effort and moved to Chicago where her sister lived. She trained as a riveter at the American Aircraft Institute and later went to the Howard Aircraft Corp. where she helped to construct a Navy training plane.

“I think there were different models but I don’t know too much about them.

The one I worked on was the Nightengale,” Lockart said. “We’d go to the factory at 8 a.m. and then we’d be off at 5 in the evening. We’d take a streetcar to the factory.”

Chicago, she said, was different then than now, saying it felt like a small town when she lived there.

“I have always been proud that I was a Rosie the Riveter,” Lockart said. After the war, she went to beauty school in Paris and married a soldier who fought in the European Theater.

POW CAMPS Illinois was the home to several prisoner of war camps including one in Washington, a few miles outside of Peoria.

From 1944 to 1945, the village was the site of a small POW camp. The camp started with 50 German prisoners who helped make K-rations for the troops.

The camp expanded over the months to have more than 200 POWs, according to a book published by Mary Kerr about the Washington camp.

Kerr is working on another book about central Illinois during World War II, and including a chapter on a POW camp in the center of Eureka.

“Many people didn’t have contact with the prisoners and didn’t know if they were ‘good or bad,’” Kerr said. “But if you had contact with them, you probably went away thinking that they were OK.” The kids were very intrigued by the POWs, she said, noting that many would ride their bikes to the camp and talk to prisoners.

CHARLESTON — The problem elite high school athletes often have is that the only time they get to see other elite competition is during games, because rarely can a high school feature the type of competition to help push the truly gifted athletes in practice.

For Bolingbrook juniors Katelyn Johnson and Kayla Walters, they don’t have that problem.

The Raider duo pushed each other all the way onto the podium at the state finals in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University as Walters placed fourth in a time of 14.61 seconds and Johnson was eighth in 14.76.

It is the first time in Bolingbrook’s history that a pair of

runners have medaled in the same event in the same season.

“That is pretty good,” Johnson said. “It helps me a lot because I am second best in the school to (Walters) and she pushes me when I need it the most. There are not a lot of schools that have that.”

For Walters, this marked her second time in as many years she medaled in the 100-high hurdles, as she was second a year ago.

This season in the finals, she was off to a fast start and then clipped a hurdle.

“I have been working on my trail leg and I tried to rip it through like I do in practice and I guess it was just too low,” Walters said. “My trail leg just hit the hurdle. This just makes me want to work so much harder and it gives me a lot of moSEE TWO PAGE 10

Flyers earn postseason awards Lewis University’s Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) and Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) picked up some more postseason honors on Thursday (May 17) as both were selected to the VolleyballMag.com All-American teams.

Coenen was named to the second team while Simmons earned honorable mention honors.

Coenen, a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball First Team selection and AVCA Second Team All-American, averaged 3.79 kills-per-set and led the team in kills (349). He is the seventh different Flyer (out of 16) to garner All-American honors more than once. Coenen recorded double-digit kills in 20 of 29 matches and had two matches with at least 20 kills including a season-high 21 against Ohio State on Feb. 22.

Against ranked teams, he finished with a team-best 259 kills and averaged 4.05 kills-per-set, while hitting .288 (259 kills, 97 errors, 563 attacks) in 19 match-

es.

Simmons earns his second straight VolleyballMag.com Honorable Mention All-America award after being named to the All-MIVA First Team and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors. He finished the season with 202 digs and averaged 2.40 digs-per-set which was second best in the conference. He recorded double-digit digs in nine matches this season, highlighted by a 14-dig performance against McKendree (Feb. 24).

Lewis finished its 2018 season with a record of 19-11.

• The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced the 201718 James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Awards honorees on Wednesday (May 16). Lewis University’s Michael Leet (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) and Zoe Mead (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) were named the Flyers’ recipients of the Spalding Sportsmanship Award.

Leet holds a 3.24 cumulative GPA as a Biology major while

competing in cross country and track and field. He will compete in the steeplechase at the NCAAII Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Charlotte, N.C. next weekend. Leet enters the championship meet with the fifth fastest time in the event this season. He earned All-American honors at the 2016 NCAA-II Cross Country Championships.

“Michael improved as an athlete so much while at Lewis University, but the biggest factor in advancing his abilities, has been his personal growth,” Lewis men’s and women’s track and field head coach Dana Schwarting said. “Most freshman in our program are a little immature, and unsure of themselves when they get to campus, and part of our job as coaches is to help them mature and grow as people.

“Michael has matured and grown as a person so much in his five years. He is definitely a leader on our men’s team. He leads by example and his work

ethic, but also speaks up when the need arises. When immense talent merges with great leadership skills, you get an amazing student athlete, and Michael is just that.”

Mead currently holds a 3.65 cumulative GPA and is majoring in Early Childhood and Special Education. She too is a twosport athlete competing in cross country and track and field.

Mead earned All-American honors in 2015 as part of the 4x400 meter relay. She was also named the GLVC’s Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year in 2015. Mead has been named the GLVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week twice in her career.

“Zoe is a very quiet and unassuming individual off the track, but she has a quick sense of humor and wit about her once you get to know her,” Schwarting said.

“On the track, she has been a tremendous force for the women’s team for four years.

She has an amazing ability to out kick her opponents, often com-

ing back from being way behind, to snatch victory at the last second.

“She always wins with grace though, shaking hands and celebrating with opponents, when they all run a good time, even though she out leaned someone at the line. Slammers starting to find a groove The Joliet Slammers (3-6) beat the Windy City Thunderbolts (53) 3-2 thanks to a walk off home run by Justin Garcia.

The Thunderbolts started their scoring in the top of the 2nd inning when Ronnie Healy singled in Tyler Straub putting Windy City on the board at 1-0.

Riley Krane added on for Windy City after an RBI single in the top of the 5th that brought home Blair Beck making it 2-0.

RJ Thompson put the Slammers on the board with a two out two run single in the bottom of the 6th that scored Chaz Meadows and Trenton Hill tying the game at 2.

In the bottom of the 9th Justin Garcia hit a walk off home run winning it for the Slammers with a score of 3-2.

Joliet returns home Friday, May 25th vs. the Southern Illinois Miners. Friday night is Rock Night with another Fireworks Friday.

A game earlier, the Slammers fell 3-0 to WIndy City despite the efforts of Liam O’Sullivan, a 6-foot, 3-inch right hander from South Grafton, Massachusetts, retired the first 14 batters he faced and did not give up a hit until the top of the 5th, when Windy City first baseman Tyler Straub hit a single to right.

The ThunderBolts starting pitcher, Jake Welch, gave up two hits in the first 2 innings, including a single up the middle gap by Slammers’ first baseman Trenton Hill. Following the at bat, Welch retired 13 straight Joliet batters.

In the seventh , the Slammers threatened with bases loaded after a pair of walks and a single by Hill, but Ridge Hoopii-Haslam struck out looking, keeping the score 0-0.

Ransom LaLonde hit a deep sac fly to right field, scoring Tyler Straub.

Blair Beck would hit a double off the left field wall, bringing Darius Day home to score. The ThunderBolts would put up 3 runs in the 8th inning.

O’Sullivan would then be pulled after 7.1 innings pitched.

He surrendered 3 Runs on only 4 Hits and struck out 7 batters.

The Slammers opened their series against Windy City with

an 8-2 win.

The Slammers were trailing 2-0 in the middle of the 4th but took a lead in the bottom half of the inning and didn’t look back.

Travis Bolin and Ridge HoopiHaslam each collected an RBI in the inning for the Slammers.

Joliet’s offense continued its tear in the bottom of the 6th inning posting a four-spot with Chaz Meadows forcing a bad throw with the bases loaded.

Travis Bolin, Cody Clark and Alex Krupa scored on the error making it a 6-2 game.

That was the second win in a row for Joliet as the Slammers found their offensive stride Thursday morning against the visiting Otters of Evansville in a 7-2 victory.

After dropping the last two games to the Otters, losing them 6-3 on Tuesday and 6-4 on Wednesday, the Slammers wanted to ensure that they came out of their opening home series with a win.

The Slammers had struggled in their previous games and could not find their way out of difficult situations.

When runners were in scoring position, they were unable to bring them home. T his was not the case Thursday morning.

After starting pitcher Scot Hoffman got the Slammers out of a bases loaded jam, the team went to work at the plate, driving in three runs in the top of the 1st.

Third basemen Danny Zardon

would start the scoring with a single into center field to bring home Thompson from second base.

After an offensive push and a few walks at the plate, second

baseman Hoopi-Haslam hit a fly ball to shallow left field that passed the fielder and scored two runners on base.

The Slammers would lead, 3-0,after one inning.

A pitching mistake by Evansville pitcher Nathan Foriest in the bottom of the 2nd allowed the Slammers to advance runners and score one more run.

Two innings later, Slammers DH Justin Garcia would connect with an outside pitch and shot it over the right field wall for a 340 foot home run (5-0).

Scot Hoffman would continue to pitch until the 6th inning. He allowed only four hits and gave up no runs in five innings, striking out four batters.

The Otters would find two runs in the 7th, including a Zach Welz sacrifice fly (5-2). But the Slammers would fight back and score two runs of their own.

An RJ Thompson single to Otters first baseman Dulin was bobbled and scored HoopiiHaslam from third (7-2).

The Slammers would close out the game and walk away with their first win of the season with a final score of 7-2.

mation Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday (May 17) that Lewis University senior Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 4 At-Large First Team.

“Dora has been a model student-athlete here and everything she has done in the classroom, on the tennis court, and in the Lewis University commu-

nity has always been a positive reflection on Lewis University,” Lewis men’s and women’s tennis head coach Brett Bridel said.

“She is an amazing young lady and I could not be more proud of her.”

Andrejszki is working on her master’s degree and has a GPA of 3.90 in Organizational Leadership. She received her undergraduate degree last year in Exercise and Movement Science

with a 3.85 cumulative GPA. Andrejszki won a combined 55 singles and doubles matches this season. As a singles player, she went 26-5 and was 29-4 in doubles action.

District 4 consists of studentathletes from the GLVC, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Andrejszki is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors.

Individually, Walters also competed in the triple jump, posting a day-one leap of 35feet, 3.75-inches, while Jackson ran the 200 dash prelims in 25.23.

Romeoville also had a quartet of events compete in the prelims, but did not advance to the finals.

Senior Kaniyah Rush was part of all four Spartan events that ran at state.

She posted a time of 25.05 in the 200 dash, while running the 100 dash in 12.67.

Rush teamed with senior Katie Kerwin and sophomores Iesha Yillah and Kylie Barney in the 4x100 relay (49.25) and 4x200 relay (1:44.90).

They found another place to live, and they both work, but since the foreclosure my dad has been asking me for money on a regular basis. He tries to make me feel guilty, and he calls or asks me to come over to talk about it when my mom isn’t home.

He even asked for half of the bonus I received at work the other day. I know they need help, but I’m not sure what to do.
