Romeoville breaks ground on new retail center 9,400-squarefoot retail center is expected to include six tenants By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

Uptown Square continues to take shape with the groundbreaking of a new retail center at at the northwest corner of Route 53 and Alexander Circle in front of the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center.

The 9,400-square-foot retail center is expected to include six tenants including BMO Harris bank and the return of Subway.

“We look forward to the opening of this Center as this will bring additional retail along the Route 53 corridor, as well as attracting new development in the immediate area,” said Mayor John Noak.

BMO Harris Bank is expected to occupy a portion of the center and

plans show for three drive-thru lanes to accommodate bank users.

The building is expected to incorporate the village’s standard design features using stone and brick; abundant landscaping and larger sidewalks in keeping with the remainder of the downtown area.

Completion is expected for the fall.

Meanwhile construction is moving along for the new Fat Ricky s restaurant and long-awaited Franconi s grocery store.

The approximately 10,500-square-foot building will be located in Outlet 1 of Uptown Square.

Fat Ricky s will include a restaurant and sports bar and Franconi s Grocery will include an Italian delicatessen and grocery with Italian bakery and café.

The two businesses will have separate entrances but will be connected through a vestibule for customers to walk from restaurant to store or vice versa.

An abundant landscaping plan is in the works as well complete with a new, wider decorative sidewalk

outlining Phelps Avenue and decorative paving, brick pavers and a mixture of plantings harmonious with the overall Uptown Square landscape design plan.

The outlined construction is in keeping with the village’s plan to create a town center with retail, office, civic uses and public spaces in a pedestrian-friendly environment.

Uptown Square is meant to provide a multi-purpose activity area to serve the community.

The plan includes the athletic center, on-street parking, and a special event area to host community events.

Although Romeoville lacks a “traditional” downtown area, the village considers the 40-acre established site running from Route 53 to Dalhart Avenue as its downtown and has been working to redevelop the area for nearly a decade.

The site was originally developed in the mid 1960s and over time has deteriorated with much of the retail development migrating westward along Weber Road creating an underutilized area.

Village approves franchise agreement to bring fiber communication services to area Broadband enabled services like telecommuting, distance learning and telemedicine will be possible

By Bugle Staff A new communications company is heading to town bringing new fiber infrastructure for its customers, promising to speed up internet speeds and increase quality video streaming.

The Romeoville village board recently approved a local franchise agreement with MetroNet. The contract includes fiber communication services and installation of necessary equipment.

“We are excited about the partnership with MetroNet. Expanding infrastructure and providing additional options for our residents and businesses is crucial. Many companies rely on enhanced services for their business operations,” said Mayor John Noak.

According to the company, through MetroNet’s fiber

infrastructure, residential consumers will have access to internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps, interactive fiber TV service with incredible picture quality, and reliable feature-rich fiber phone service, all at affordable rates.

MetroNet also plans to offer a full suite of business communications services ranging from a scalable HPBX phone solution for small and medium businesses to customized network services tailored to the specific needs of larger customers.

Drawn to Romeoville for its growing market and forward focus on technology, MetroNet said it is excited about its move into Romeoville.

“One of the primary factors in our evaluation process is strong local leadership,” stated John Cinelli, President of MetroNet. “The enthusiasm for this project

Area teens will lose a favorite clothing store at the Promenade Bolingbrook, as Aeropostale announced its bankruptcy filing May 4.

The retailer stated it is going through a business transformation and announced its decision to close 113 U.S. locations and all 41 of its stores in Canada. In Illinois, the list of store closings included the Promenade Bolingbrook location.

“We have been aware of the problems that the Aeropostale Corporation has been having for some time,” said Kris Kuchler, director of marketing for the Promenade. “They have been with us for nine years and we are very sorry to see any of our tenants close.

Kuchler added that the Promenade is always in conversations with retailers interested in becoming one of the shopping center’s more than 65 stores and 12 restaurants.

“The Promenade is in a good position, and we have an opportunity to make a

thoughtful decision about tenants that are a good fit and make sense for our center, our guests and the marketplace as a whole,” Kuchler said.

Store closing sales have already begun.

Aeropostale stated any potential sale would be expected to be completed within the next six months.

“While initiatives such as the implementation of our two-chain factory and mall strategy and our merchandise repositioning have started to gain traction, the ripple effects of an ongoing dispute with our second-largest supplier put substantial strain on our liquidity while also preventing us from realizing the full benefits of our turnaround plans,” Aeropostale Chief Executive Officer Julian Geiger said in a statement. “As a result, we have chosen to take more decisive and aggressive action to create a leaner, more efficient business that is well-positioned to compete and succeed in today’s retail environment.

We appreciate the loyalty and support of our customers, employees and business partners as we complete this process.”

Aeropostale will continue to operate its nearby Joliet location. In Illinois, seven locations from Carbondale, Bourbonnais, Springfield, Forsyth, Bolingbrook, Tuscola and Geneva, are scheduled to close.

Romeoville police save heroin overdose victim Bugle Staff Romeoville police revived a 40-year-old man from what could have been a fatal heroin overdose.

The Romeoville Police Department said officers responded to the 1200 block of Pullman at about

5:15 p.m. May 5 for a call that a man was unresponsive. Upon arrival, the officers learned that the victim had just injected himself with heroin.

I recently read the book “Great With Money” by Melissa Burke and Ellen Rogin. With the goal of the book being to help readers create a prosperous mindset and a confident approach to money, you might expect it to focus on how to earn more and spend less. Well, it may surprise you to know that “clear your clutter” is the first step to prosperity described by the authors. Yup, clearing the clutter in your life is the first step toward prosperity.

Even without the benefit of seeing disorganized homes and offices on the level that I do, these authors wisely recognize that being surrounded by clutter can block you from achieving more in your life – your piles of paper and other stuff represent unfinished tasks and postponed decisions that can weigh you down. The clutter not only physically blocks you from accomplishing things, but the mental clutter it creates can

prevent you from moving forward in your life. You’re too busy focusing on what you haven’t accomplished to be able to think about creating new accomplishments.

Sure, great achievers like Albert Einstein were famously buried in clutter.

However,I’mguessingthatbecauseyou’re reading a column about organization, you sense that being better organized would help you accomplish more. As Swiss philosopher Henri Frédéric Amiel stated, “Order is light, peace, inner freedom, self-determination: it is power.

To conceive order, to return to order, to realize order in oneself, around oneself, by means of oneself, is well-being.”

Not only does clearing clutter and creating order create a physical and mental path towards prosperity, it can actually directly generate prosperity.

City reminds residents to be prepared this tornado season Bugle Staff With temperatures slowly starting to climb up to normal averages for this time of year, the threat of tornados and severe thunderstorms are also on the rise.

The city of Joliet last week reminded residents of some important preparedness and safety tips to keep in mind if confronted with one of nature’s most violent storms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Severe Storm Laboratory says about 1,200 tornadoes are reported in the U.S. each year, most commonly in the central plains and southeastern portions of the country. In the upper Midwest and northern plains, tornado season typically falls between June and July.

However, weather experts warn that these deadly storms can occur any time of year.

When starting to prepare for these storms, the city recommends building an emergency kit and making a family communications plan. Be aware of changing weather conditions and listen to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or television newscasts for the latest information. Tornadoes are formed from powerful thunderstorms, which typically produced a number of warning signs. During these storms, residents are urged to look for dark or greenish skies; large hail; a large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating); and a loud roar similar to a freight train.

Tornadoes are narrow columns of air that rotate violently and extend from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground. They are often hard to see unless a funnel cloud, or condensation funnel, made up of dust, debris and water droplets forms. Below are a number of precautions to take in the event of a tornado watch or warning.

Tornado watch If a tornado “watch” is issued for your area, it means that weather conditions are favorable for a tornado. Gather items like water, weather radio with extra batteries, snacks, blankets, and flashlights; Keep a radio or local area TV station on so you will have access to the most up-to-date storm information, also available at www. willcountyema.org/noaa.php;

Limit travel during a tornado watch One of the most dangerous places you can be during a tornado is in your car; Keep alert and watch for changing weather conditions; Be ready to seek shelter at a moment’s notice; Place small objects such as garbage cans, bicycles and patio furniture inside; and Keep children under close supervision. If a tornado “warning” is issued, it means that a tornado has either been indicated by radar or observed by spotters. A warning means there is a serious threat to life and property and it is time to go to a safe shelter immediately.

Inside when a warning is issued Make sure you have a portable radio, preferably NOAA Weather Radio, for weather alerts and updates; Seek shelter in the lowest level of your home, such as a basement or storm cellar. If you don’t have a basement, go to an inner hallway, a smaller inner room or a closet; Keep away from all windows and glass doorways; If you’re in a building such as a church, hospital, school or office building, go to the innermost part of the building on the lowest floor; Do not use elevators because the power may fail, leaving you trapped; Cushion yourself with a mattress, but don’t cover yourself with one; Cover your head and eyes with a blanket or jacket to protect against flying debris and broken glass; Don’t waste time moving mattresses around; Keep pets on a leash or in a crate or carrier; Stay inside until you are certain the storm has passed, as multiple tornadoes can emerge from the same storm; Do not leave a building to attempt to “escape” a tornado.

Outside when a warning is issued Try to get inside a building as quickly as possible and find a small, protected space away from windows; Avoid buildings with longspan roof areas such as a school gymnasium, arena or shopping mall, as these structures are usually supported only by outside walls.

When hit by a tornado, buildings like these can collapse because they cannot withstand the pressure of the storm.

SHARING Spartans learn valuable lesson in helping others through sport

With a record hovering around the break even mark this season, the Romeoville soccer team is enjoying the fruits of its labor on the pitch this season, but at the recent PepsiCo Showdown tournament, the Spartans were reaped the benefits of their hard work off the field.

Romeoville was awarded $500 as part of the Lynn and Scott Magnesen Community Service Award, which recognizes and awards teams who significantly impact their community and are themselves impacted by that contribution. This award is designed to inspire volunteerism on a continual basis, encouraging the utilization of various service organizations.

“We had a ‘Kickin’ Cancer’ game where our whole program raised money for St. Baldrick’s,” said Romeoville coach Phil Wicyk.

“We partnered with Reavis and our team raised around $2,500 and Reavis raised like $500, so it was really cool. All of the coaches shaved their heads in between games. I think the girls enjoyed it and it is a memory that they will have with them the rest of their lives.”

Wicyk said earning that recognition is something special for the team.

“It shows them that there is more than just the sport out there,” he said. “They do a lot more that people see and it is a lot more than just coming out here and playing for 80 minutes. There is an extension off the field.”

Pitch perfect Romeoville softball and Bolingbrook baseball hurlers enjoy big days

There are certain feats that all athletes - depending on their sport - strive for.

A bowler wants a 300 game, a golfer a hole in one and a football player a game-winning catch.

For a pitcher, there are a couple of career altering feats they can accomplish and for a pair of Valley View hurlers they earned these feats on the same day.

Sophomore pitcher Audrey Sizemore defeated Plainfield South 3-0 on May 5 by throwing a perfect game, while Bolingbrook’s Jacob Nagel tossed a no hitter against Sandburg in a 4-0 win.

“I am speechless. I was nervous going into the seventh inning and I think if someone said it, it would have jinxed it,” Sizemore said. “I am very superstitious. But, there is no way I could have done it

Not only did Sizemore have pressure in the seventh inning, she had the pressure for the final four

innings.

“I knew it going into the fourth inning because I really pay attention to that,” she said. “At one point, I was so nervous, I just told myself it’s not about me at that time, it was about winning for my team.”

Not only was throwing the perfect game special for Sizemore, it meant more because of her special fan in the audience.

“One of the big things is that my dad came here from Baltimore to see me play and I haven’t seen him in a long time, so that is incredible,” she said.

At the same time Sizemore was throwing her perfect game in Joliet, Bolingbrook’s Jacob Nagel was in Orland Park throwing a no-hitter against the Eagles.

The senior struck out six batters over seven innings to help the Raiders move to 12-9 on the season and 7-2 in the SWSC Blue.

“This was a big win for us because we are in a position right now where we are tied for first in conference and that was a sign that we can actually do it,” Nagel said.

It was the first no hitter of his career at any level, but he still stayed with the superstitions of the

Power Surge Big bats, big arms pace Bolingrook’s early season success

High school baseball in Illinois usually has the same progression season after season.

In the beginning of spring when the weather is cold, so are the bats. As the temperatures begin to rise, the hitting rises with it.

Somehow this season, however, Bolingbrook did not follow suit.

The Raiders opened the season with boppers hitting the ball all over the field – as well as out of it.

The offensive explosion has been keyed by junior third basemen Jordan Jackson.

Through his first 47 at bats this season, Jackson is batting .447 and of his 21 hits, nine are for extra bases. Jackson has six home runs, two doubles and a triple and has driven in 19 runs.

“He has been fun to watch all year,” said Bolingbrook coach Scott Thyer. “He works extremely hard and he has put in a tremendous amount of work in the offseason and now he is seeing the fruits of his labor on the field.

I know every time out with him, I will get a professional at bat. He seems to always put the ball in play and that is a testament to his hard work.”

Jackson credits his coaching to helping him fine tune his craft.

“Our hitting coaches are great at noticing things and tweaking things, but when we get in the games, they tell us to just go and hit,” he said.

His surge in power this season has also caused a surge in interest in Jackson as scouts are taking notice of his gaudy numbers and while he appreciates the attention, the slugger said he will not approach the game any different.

“It is good, but I come out here with the same chip on my shoulder,” he said. “I have the attitude that if I play the game the way it is supposed to be played and if I respect the game, it will respect me back.”

Jackson isn’t the only Raider hitting the ball hard this season.

Jordan Jackson has put up huge power numbers this season. and Thyer said they are getting production up and down the lineup.

“We have a group of guys that follow each other’s lead and they are positively influenced by each other and that is good for me to see,” he said. “One through six in our lineup has been good.

Kellen Quigley, our shortstop, has been really good for us, Jeremiah Lebron has been north of .500 this season and has been swinging the bats well and Dylan Crouse is hitting around .430.TJ DeHerrera always puts the ball in play hard and has a really good approach at the plate. He is a warrior and plays the game right. He has a mindset that he never wants anyone to outwork him and because of that work ethic he has done a great job.”

That work ethic and a team unity are things the Raiders pride

themselves on.

“We have a good chemistry and that is why we are playing great baseball this year,” DeHerrera said. “Coach has implemented the hustle rule, so we are always running out of the box, on a walk we are sprinting down the baseline.”

Winning games also gives the Raiders more confidence.

“We are coming out with a different swagger and picking each other up and playing as a team,” said Myles Sandeen. “We know we will come out every game and play baseball to the best of our ability.”

That confidence was what Thyer is looking for when he challenged the team to change the perception of Bolingbrook baseball.

Locals lead Flyers to GLVC track and field championships The No. 12 Lewis University women’s track and field team made it look easy, as the Flyers took home eight individual titles on Saturday (May 7) en route to the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by William Jewell, at Greene Stadium.

Lewis finished with 213 points, while its nearest competitor Bellarmine totaled 102 on the weekend. It’s the most points

scored in a GLVC Championship since Indianapolis took home the 2010 title with 218. The title is Lewis’ second in the past three years.

Lewis senior Amber Cook (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) won her second title in as many days with a first place high jump of 5’5 1/4” (1.66m), while senior Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook) picked up two titles on Saturday. Stennis defended her

2015 title in the 200-meter dash with a NCAA Provisional time of 23.89 and added a win in the 400-meter dash (54.45).

Stennis was named the GLVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, while Cook was the GLVC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.

Flyer freshman Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./Romeoville) made it a clean sweep of the sprint events for Lewis with a first place finish of 12.05 in the 100-meter dash.

Cook, Stennis and Pulliam joined forces with junior Phoenix Smallwood (Princeton, Ill./ Princeton) to finish second overall in the 4x100 meter relay with a NCAA Provisional mark of 46.82.

Pulliam picked up the 2016 GLVC Freshman of the Year award.

Smallwood went on to defend her 2015 long jump title with a first place leap of 19’2 1/2” (5.85m), followed by Cook’s second-place finish of 19’1 1/4” (5.82m). Lewis

“I knew that there were no hits, but I didn’t let it get to me because I knew if I did anything different I would start messing up,” he said.

“I was doing fine before. If my teammates were talking about it, they didn’t mention it to me. We had a thing going on, where I would come in the dugout, took a sip of Gatorade, went up to the fence and gave one of our outfielders, Frank Dixon, a little fist bump and we watched the inning. I had a routine and couldn’t break it.”

Nagel said he knew early the day was going to go his way.

“I knew it was going to be something special. I was throwing strikes, I was getting ground balls and the defense was making plays,”

Miranda won both the 800-meter run (1:51.04) and 1,500-meter run (3:54.34). His time in the 800-meter run was a NCAA Provisional mark.

of 1:51.46.

Lewis’ 4x100 relay quartet of Andre Barnes, senior Isaac Jean-Paul (Gurnee, Ill./Warren) and sophomores Devin Ingram (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) and Brock Robertsen (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) finished second overall with a time of 41.75. Robertsen went on to finish second in the 400-meter hurdles (54.96).

Robertsen, Jemilo, Miranda and Barnes paired up for the first place and GLVC record-setting 4x400 relay (3:13.01). The previous record of 3:13.49 was set by SIUEdwardsville in 2007.

The Flyers received a runner-up finish and NCAA Provisional time of 14.44 in the 110-meter hurdles from sophomore Shabari Bailey (Minooka, Ill./Minooka).

Coach Dana Schwarting was named both the 2016 GLVC Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.

While he knew the day would be special early in the game, he knew a day earlier it would go in the Radiders’ direction.

“I was texting our first baseman, TJ (DeHerrera) the night before and I told him of they take care of things at the plate, I will take care of it on the mound and it worked out perfectly, so that was really cool. This was the best game I have ever been part of.”

That offense got better as the game went on, taking pressure off Nagel.

“Offense is huge for a pitcher,” Nagel said. “The (Sandburg) pitcher that they faced was really good and throwing hard, but our

guys made adjustments and we got one in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth and that really makes pitching easy when you are pitching with the lead.”

“Coach Thyer started talking to us about changing the perception about Bolingbrook baseball,” said Jacob Nagel. “We are a serious competitor now and if you look at the conference standings, we are right up there, so we will be battling for a conference championship this year.”

Nagel is Bolingbrook’s ace on the mound this season.

“Jacob has been great for us this year,” Thyer said. “He eats up a lot of innings and always throws strikes and we know when he is on the mound we have a chance to compete and that is really all

we want from any of our starters is to give us the chance to win a ballgame. Joey (Kmiec) is also doing a nice job and the bullpen has pitched really well.”

With the talent the Raiders have on the roster, Thyer said he feels better letting the players take the game as it happens.

“We feel like practices are for us and games are for them,” he said.

“We almost take a step back during games and just manage the game.

We let them play. There are times where coaches can get in the way and that is the last thing I want to do with our guys.”

BADMINTON Zoe Bermejo is the second Spartan singles badminton player to advance to the IHSA State Badminton tournament.

The senior finished fourth place in the Lockport Sectional and finished with a overall record of 21-7 at No. 1 singles.

Bermejo defeated Taryn Bank of Plainfield North 21-10, 21-8, Nicole Gal of Joliet West 21-11, 21-14 and Sandburg 21-16, 21-16 before falling 21-9, 21-11 to Emily Tunney of Sandburg in the third-place match.

“We have been battling with almost all of our conference We held Oswego scoreless for 60 minutes and Plainfield South we held scoreless for 60 minutes,” he said. “What it comes down to is we have to play 80 minutes. It is hard when a lot of other teams have a lot of depth and we have some players who have very little experience and it just comes down to will.”

The Spartans are getting more offense this season.

“Olivia De La Rosa has eight goals and three assists, Kalie Rice, a freshman, has six assists herself,” Wicyk said. “Statistically, this is our best start since I have been here.

We are scoring more goals.”

Defensively, Romeoville has had solid play in net.

“Macayla Dwyer is lights out,” Wicyk said. “I would put her up against any other goalie in our conference and she would be No. 1. You can ask any coach and they will tell you the same thing.”

The better play has the Spartans nearing both of their preseason goals.

“We have two goals this year – one is to beat a conference opponent, which has never happened since the Southwest Prairie Conference was restructured to these eight teams and the other is to not have to play a No. 1 seed in the first game of the playoffs,” Wicyk said.

“We don’t want to play Naperville North, Naperville Central, Neuqua Valley or someone like that. We are close, we beat Bolingbrook and East Aurora and they are in our sectional, so there are two we should be ranked above, but we can’t just be good with that.”
