Dept. receives grants for equipment $11,690 grant was used to purchase a Thermal Imaging Camera Working to keep the safety of the community paramount, the Bolingbrook Fire Department recently pursued and was awarded a life-saving grant.

AAA , The Auto Club Group, has awarded a $7,450 grant to be used to purchase a battery powered Holmatro rescue tool, commonly referred to as The Jaws of Life.

According to the Bolingbrook Fire Department, located at the intersection of I-55 & I-355, and with the industrial corridor of distribu-

tion centers on the village’s west side, the Bolingbrook Fire Department serves 76,000 residents and responds to approximately 600 motor vehicle crashes each year.

The majority are minor fender-benders, but some are more serious and require firefighters to use special power tools and equipment like the Jaws of Life to safely extricate the occupants from their vehicles.

“We appreciate the bravery and dedication of our Bolingbrook Firefighters, and are happy to partner with them to help motorists when there is a crash,” said Beth Mosher of the AAA – The Auto Club Group.

partment, working out of Station # 4 on West Boughton Road.

“This new tool is battery powered and portable. It does not rely on hydraulics back on the fire engine to operate,” said Trnka. “Since it’s cordless, we’ll be able to maneuver better and get it into tight places.”

In addition, the Bolingbrook Fire Department also recently received a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The grant, valued at $11,690, was used to purchase a Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC), which will be used to detect hot spots

in burning buildings, allowing Bolingbrook Firefighters to quickly locate the origins of a fire.

“Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation is truly the heart of Firehouse Subs. The Foundation is part of our culture and we’re proud to support it,” said Firehouse Subs franchisee, Omar Shaker. “It takes a certain type of individual who will put their life on the line to protect others. We want to be sure they have the education needed to prepare them for emergencies.”

In 2005, Firehouse Subs cofounders created the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation with the mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment, and educational opportunities to first-responders and public safety organizations. Through the nonprofit 501(c)(3), Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has given more than $25 million to hometown heroes in 46 states plus Puerto Rico and Canada.

Each restaurant recycles leftover, five-gallon pickle buckets, available to guests for a $2 donation to the Foundation. Donation canisters on register counters explain the non-profit’s mission and collect spare change, while the Round Up Program allows guests to “round up” their bill to the nearest dollar. All funds raised benefit the Foundation.

Development continues for Normantown Rd. Holiday Inn Express planned for Normantown Square near I-55

Progress continues for the development of a Holiday Inn Express in the Normantown Square near I55.

Reports show a concept plan by the Hospitality Guru Group was recently proposed to the Romeoville Planning and Zoning Commission. The hotel is to be built on 2.35 acres in the commercial development at Normantown Road and Center Boulevard that includes American Sales, Bowlero (the former Brunswick Zone) and Crème De La Crème Preschool.

The proposed, franchise-owned Holiday Inn Express would be a four-story building consisting of 96 guest rooms, a pool, meeting rooms, fitness center, business center and breakfast/lounge space in addition, an outdoor patio is proposed on the north side

In other development planning stages, Murphy Oil USA, Inc. has applied for a concept plan review for a new gas station and convenience store at the southeast corner of Weber Road near the Blain’s Fleet and Farm.

The proposed gas station would have 16 state-of-the-art pumps located under a canopy; and a

1,400 square-foot convenience store with restrooms and a sales counter. The property would be covered by security cameras and would be open 24 hours. A planning and zoning report shows the site will have two access points on the internal ring road for Farm & Fleet.

Murphy Express has several locations open and under construction in Illinois; including sites in New Lenox, Lockport, Joliet, and Bradley. Final development plans are still required for both projects.

New twist on spring, Easter decorating ggs are symbolic of Easter.

They’re colored, decorated, hidden, and used in decorative items for the home. The one caveat to eggs is that they are quite fragile, and even hard-boiled eggs can be rendered useless with one accidental drop or blow. Instead of relying on breakable eggs for Easter fun, consider making stronger ones instead.

Symbolic of rebirth and renewal, eggs are an integral part of setting the scene come early spring.

Selecting a less fragile material to create the looks of real eggs can increase the potential for using them in many different applications. One of the easiest ways to create harderto-break eggs is to make them out of clay.

Modeling clay is a versatile medium that can be used to make everything from clay eggs to bunny figurines to religious items synonymous with Easter.

A visit to the local craft store or even a chain retailer will likely turn up different clay products, which

come in a variety of colors. You can create pastel-colored clay by mixing primary colors with white clay if you cannot find pastel colors in the store.

There are two main ways to create egg shapes out of a ball of clay.

One way is to roll a ball out of the clay and then roll it vertically between your hands to make the smaller end of the egg. Another is to use a plastic egg as a mold and stuff the clay inside. Pop open the top of the plastic egg and then gently tap the clay out.

You don’t even have to color your clay if you don’t feel up to it.

You may also use white clay, allow to dry, and then paint them using acrylic paints. Mix two clay colors together before forming into an egg to achieve a marbled effect.

Also think about adding embellishments like stickers, ribbon, bows, and flowers to the eggs, much in the same way you would decorate real eggs.

Secure as necessary with the wire. Decorate with bows made out of ribbon. Place the eggs into the nest and display where desired.

a dowel or piece of florist’s wire into the egg before allowing to harden completely. Then attach them as needed.

Clay eggs can be used in place of regular eggs in just about every traditional egg use -- except of course for making egg salad! Plus, making clay eggs is a fun and safe craft for all ages.

New program to spur entrepreneurship in area Program will be a partnership with the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone

A partnership bringing together the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone and Lewis University in a new endeavor to spark entrepreneurship is growing.

Introducing a new program, the Regional Alliance Business Incubator project, Lewis University hopes to encourage innovation and local entrepreneurs by assisting them in becoming stronger and healthier businesses.

The program will be a partnership with the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone, which includes Romeoville, Joliet, Rockdale, Lockport and Will County.

The Enterprise Zone Board recently approved the first phase of the program, which includes a feasibility study. Director of the Lowell Stahl Center for Entrepreneurship and Real Estate at Lewis University Kristin Burton explained the goals have been set for the feasibility study to accurately define the market opportunity and demand

for a business incubator; define the services needed (programming and facilities) for the startup community; recommend a format and general operating procedures; and assess the incubators potential financial performance.

If the study yields favorable results, the Alliance Incubator will be housed at Lewis University’s Fitzpatrick House and be funded by the Enterprise Zone along with in-kind donations by the university.

By using a mix of educational workshops and the university’s existing intellectual, technological, and material resources, the Alliance Incubator aims to create a state of the art business program.

STEM-related, product based, and information technology companies are at the heart of this initiative.

“We’re extremely excited that Lewis University is using their resources and educational expertise to make a direct impact on the county and an investment in our future,” said Romeoville Mayor John Noak. “The Alliance Incuba-

tor Program at Lewis will allow our area to become more competitive in capturing and creating the companies of the future.”

Burton said the incubator is designed to be open to a broad range of companies in the surrounding areas including STEM-related companies, product base companies, and information technology companies. More specifics will be determined after the feasibility study is concluded.

“We appreciate the Enterprise Zone’s assistance on this initiative that shows great potential for positive economic impact on the region. We look forward to working with innovative entrepreneurs through the Alliance Incubator, coordinated by our Lewis University Lowell Stahl Center for Entrepreneurship and Real Estate,” said Dr. David Livingston, president of Lewis University.

Once established, the five firstyear tenants will receive mentoring and strategic coaching, networking opportunities, assistance with loan applications and venture capital presentations, potential small seed grants, business training offerings, and faculty expert support during the startup process.

Romeoville police buying back guns Gun Buyback program will take place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 8 The Romeoville Police Department is holding a Gun Buyback program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 8 at the police department, 1050 W. Romeo Road.

Residents can turn in weapons, no questions asked and without penalty and $60 cash will be paid on the spot for each weapon turned in.

Ammunition may be turned in as well, however, there will be no payment to individuals turning in ammunition only.

Weapons should be unloaded and placed in a bag or other container and transported in the trunk or rear area of your vehicle.

If you are unfamiliar with weapons, do not to try to unload it or tamper with it in any way. Persons wishing to participate in the program, but

do not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (F.O.I.D) will be given amnesty during transport provided they travel in a direct route from their home to the drop off point.

Once you arrive at the site, an officer will take possession of your weapon, no questions will be asked of the person turning in the weapons.

If you want to turn in a weapon but have no transportation or you prefer a police officer transport your weapons, contact the police department and assistance will be provided on a case by case basis.

Police officers across the country see many instances where suspects, particularly juveniles, commit a crime with an older weapon that the rightful owner no longer uses, has forgotten about, or has seemingly lost track of.

The goal is to reduce the amount of firearms within the community that fall into this category.

ABC-TV showcases a new face from disabled community Sitcom ‘Speechless’ has as its mission to include disability community in television

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST A month ago, I spent four-anda-half hours on a gray couch in the Changing The Face of Beauty studio to film an interview for their new #FaceMyBeauty Couch Series.

As I wore a blue button down shirt, khaki pants, and a blue blazer, I was grateful for the opportunity to be part of this new Couch video series.

This new platform gives me, and others in the disability community, a place to talk about the need for our representation in advertising and in the media in general.

In the opening scene of this video, I talked about how the lack of inclusion in media matters to me because there isn’t understanding in the general public of the special needs community.

As the founder and host of Special Chronicles, a media platform that gives respect and voice to people with special needs, I am passionate about telling the stories of those of us with special needs.

This lack of understanding of those of us with disabilities in the media means that viewers don’t see us.

By us not being seen, the mainstream community cannot understand and accept us.

This is a time to celebrate the acceptance and inclusion of those of us with disabilities in the media.

It is time to showcase the lives of those with disabilities on media platforms.

In the media, whether on film, television, radio, or podcast, those of us with disabilities are rarely seen, and, if we are we are not usually portrayed in a positive light.

Today, however, the inclusion of people with disabilities in the media is beginning to change for the better.

The general public is beginning to see the joy on the faces of those who are diagnosed with special needs.

A Palos Park-based nonprofit, Changing The Face of Beauty, is the driving force behind this #FaceMyBeauty Couch Series.

ing individuals in the disability community the opportunity to sit on their couch and talk about how the media and advertising worlds can change the face of beauty.

The Couch Series has its mission to include people with disabilities in advertising and, more generally, in the media.

Another enterprise, the ABC sitcom “Speechless,” has as its mission to include the disability community in entertainment television.

The television show “Speechless” is breaking new ground as being one of the first sitcoms to feature a character and actor diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

The show centers around the daily life of a special needs family— The DiMeo family includes Maya (Minnie Driver) and Jimmy (John Ross Bowie) and their three children: JJ (Micah Fowler), Ray (Mason Cook), and Dylan (Kyla Kenedy)— and JJ’s aide Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough).

As with the many different types of disabilities, there is no one disability diagnoses that is the same.

The character of JJ DiMeo was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is also nonverbal.

JJ communicates with a letter board and has someone else speak for him.

The actor Micah Fowler, who plays JJ, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is verbal.

Even though it takes Micah a while to speak, he is still able to communicate for himself. Micah has to use a lot of facial cues and body language to play the character of JJ. In this role of JJ, I believe that Micah should be recognized for the outstanding work that he is doing as an actor.

This show is not meant to be an “after school special” but a funny and honest television sitcom show.

Micah Fowler’s family, and others in the disability community, do consult on the television show to make sure that there is this realistic portrayer of

disability.

In many of the episodes, it takes on disability issues but does so in a light, comedic tone.

Many in the special needs community can laugh at scenes on “Speechless” while it also being very autobiographical to their own life.

For one viewer in the disability community who I have spoken to explained that when she talks with her friends she says that this show is “my life in a sitcom.”

“It’s [Speechless’s] so crazy that it’s funny,” said Sarah Kate Sligh, an eighth grade student from Alabama who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. “But it’s just realistic I can relate too.”

Sarah Kate’s own mom, Andi of the blog BringingTheSunshine.com, can even relate to the character of Maya DiMeo and the “hate list” that Maya has on the “Speechless” television show. There are certain places where Andi will not go because it may not be disability friendly.

A few weeks ago, the cast and crew of “Speechless” wrapped filming Season One. The Season One finale, episode 23, titled “C-A-CAMP,” will air on the ABC network the beginning of May. During the filming of the finale, Kelsey Fowler, the older sister of Micah Fowler, flew from New York City to Los Angeles to be on set for the filming of “Speechless.”

She documented her brother Micah on her own YouTube Channel Vlog.

Even though for the many months that Micah is filming “Speechless,” he and his sister Kelsey are across the country from each other, they are really close to each other.

“Speechless” is an excellent vehicle for more inclusion and accurate inclusion in the mainstream media.

It has been the standard that when a team makes it to the IHSA state finals, the players from that team that have been invited to the Voyager Media Prep Shootout do not play in the game due mainly to pure exhaustion.

After all, those players have just played two of the hardest games of the season on back-to-back nights and more than likely returned to a community celebration that Sunday afternoon.

This season, however, that trend was bucked as two of the players from Bolingbrook’s Class 4A third place team – Cameron Harris and Nana Akenten – did show up and play in the game.

Akenten, who played 59 of the 64 possible minutes in Peoria, came out and put on a highlight show at the Shootout with jaw dropping dunks.

“I just love the game,” he said that night.

On the season, the Nebraskabound senior averaged 14.8 point and 5.7 rebounds per game, was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 3A/4A first team and led the Raiders to its second third-place trophy in three seasons.

For that, he is the 2017 Voyager Media Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Akenten was part of both the trophy winning clubs, but he had a much different role the last time around.

“My sophomore year, I was the guy that was supposed to come off the bench and do what I was told and I got really limited minutes,” he said. “I think that really helped me for this year. I saw what it took and I saw Prentiss (Nixon) and Brodric (Thomas) and my brother (Dimitri Akenten ) and all the seniors. They had the same mentality and they were on the same page all the time. “Being a senior and being able to lead my team down here is amazing. In the beginning of the season, we had a lot of doubters who didn’t think we could be very good, but we just took that as motivation and we strived for the best.”

Akenten always strived for the best in his own game as well.

“It was a lot of hard work,” he said. “There is a point where skill is just not enough. If all I know how to do is shoot and my opponent is in the gym learning to defend me, he will prosper instead

of me.”

Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost compares Akenten’s rise to that of Ben Moore, who recently finished his career in the NCAA tournament with Southern Methodist University.

“He is very similar to Ben Moore and what happened with him,” Brost said. “We are fortunate to have had a couple kids do what Nana has done. We have had kids like Prentiss and Joe

(Yesufu) and people know who they are before they even get to Bolingbrook High School, but we take pride in how we develop our kids and they players they become and especially the people that they are.

“He has matured so much and a human being even more than a player and obviously, he is a great player. He has worked his way into being a first team all stater, McDonald’s All-American

candidate, Gatorade Player of the Year nominee and all the stuff he is getting and then he is going to play in the Big 10, which speaks for itself. The best thing about him is that he is humble, he trusts the coaches and he cares about his teammates.”

Akenten credits that team bond to helping the success this season.

He was named MVP of the WJOL Thanksgiving Tournament and was named to the all-tournament teams at the York and Galesburg MLK tournaments.

“Words cannot explain the importance and significance that Jonny Butler has meant to the Minooka basketball program,” said Minooka coach Scott Tanaka.

He helped the Raiders to a third-place finish in the state by averaging 12.4 points, 4.3 assists and 2.2 rebounds on the season.

JOSE GRUBBS JOLIET CENTRAL Grubbs averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists per game this season. He was named to the IBCA Class 3A/4A All-State fourth team as well as the WJOL and State Farm Classic all tournament teams. Extra earnings doesn’t mean extra play DEAR DAVE, My wife and I argue a lot about finances. We’re trying to get more control over our money, and she has been listening to you. That’s helped a lot. She’s also a lot more frugal than I am, and our biggest point of contention right now is how we handle our spending money. Whenever I work overtime at my job, I feel like I should be able to put the overtime pay toward my spending money. What are your thoughts on this?

JOSH DEAR JOSH, No way, dude! You don’t work overtime for your little boy wants.

You work overtime, and rake in that extra cash, for the good of your family. That’s the manly thing to do.

Now, that’s not to say you both can’t have a little spending money.

It also doesn’t mean that you can’t treat yourself once in a while if you’re working your tail off. I mean, if I’m working 70 to 80 hours a week I may give myself a little inexpensive treat in the midst of all that. So, my spending money budget should reflect that. But it shouldn’t reflect a sense that I get to play more be-

cause I work extra, while the rest of the family suffers.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My daughter is 15, and she’s had jobs around the house and been on commission and the envelope system for years. She’s very good about saving and not spending on silly things. We recently opened a checking account for her, and I was wondering what bills you think we should assign for her to pay on her own?

SUZANNE DEAR SUZANNE, This sounds a lot like we did with our kids. She’s obviously bright and motivated, so the first thing you do is explain to her the seriousness and responsibility associated with

a checking account. The next step is for her to balance the checkbook with you looking over her shoulder.

Do this with her for several months, while you keep one on the account, too. After that, I want her to do it alone and show you her work. Her balance should match yours and the one at the bank.

As soon as she demonstrates competency, and you feel comfortable that she can handle things, I want you to start putting her clothing budget in the account. You know, the weirdest thing happened with our girls at this stage. They suddenly started shopping at less expensive stores. It’s amazing when they see that the dollars associated with these purchases can run out.

My bet is you’ll see some changes in her value choices.
