Romeoville candidate for new Ribfest Location Naperville and Romeoville in final discussions to relocate one of Chicagoland’s most famous festivals

The Village of Romeoville was notified by the Exchange Club of Naperville that it is their top choice for the new location of the famous Naperville Ribfest starting in 2020.

The club’s board of directors voted to approve their sixmember relocation team’s recommendation that the event, a Naperville ritual for more than 30 years, be moved from Naperville’s Knoch Park to the village located southeast of Naperville.

“From the site that they’re on in Naperville, the Park District is going under reconstruction,”

said John Noak, Romeoville Mayor. “Afterwards, it won’t be as conducive to this type of event anymore.”

Romeoville will be undergoing discussions with the Exchange Club on the agreement and the details for the event at a later time.

For now, Romeoville officials plan to meet with various stakeholders regarding the event.

The Village is hopeful in reaching an agreement with the Exchange Club and will work together to support the mission to fund local and regional nonprofit agencies.

The annual Ribfest fundraiser hosts more than 200,000 people in a span of four days, is run by

the Exchange Club of Naperville, with key resources contracted out such as the layout which is coordinated with a professional event management company.

“Both sides still need to do our due diligence by meeting with various stakeholders, com-

munity groups and all of the concerns that are real, need to be addressed,” Noak said.

Noak said in 2020 if everything gets finalized, the event will be held at the municipal grounds of Romeoville.

He also wanted to point out

that the Ribfest will not be a replacement for the Romeofest, which the village still plans on having the local festival later in the season.

The municipal campus, which is held on Romeo Road just east of Weber Road, currently features a music pavilion and a recreating campus.

Noak estimated that there were more than a few dozen cites in consideration for the Ribfest to be held, but he couldn’t be more proud and excited Romeoville will get the chance to host it.

“I think it’s a great chance to showcase many of the great and wonderful things we have done in our community,” Noak said. “People are very excited and proud of our facilities in the community that are viewed as one of the top notch areas in the Chicagoland area.”

Senior Star spearheads project benefitting people and planet with new class that offers residents opportunity to make plastic mats for homeless shelters Senior Star spearheads project benefitting people and planet with new class that offers residents opportunity to make plastic mats for homeless shelters In recognition of Earth Day, residents of Senior Star at Weber Place will present their specially hand-crocheted mats to New Life for Old Bags, Plainfield, a collaboration between people of all ages and abilities to make mats for the homeless out of used plastic bags.

Part of a new activity since winter 2018, residents at Senior Star took on the time-consuming yet timely environmental project of repurposing hundreds of plastic bags into comfortable, sleeping mats for the homeless. Requiring more than 20 steps in the process, each mat takes two to three months to make. Senior Star residents have completed two mats for this Earth Day occasion to help the homeless.

“I thought this would be a great way to engage our residents whether they have crocheting experience or have never crocheted in their life,” said Skirmante Vaiciuliene, programs assistant at Senior Star. “It is an excellent exercise for finger and hand dexterity. Plus, the end project benefits the homeless and the planet.”

Senior Star offers residents opportunities to gather daily to participate in numerous activities, including projects that keep them active and engaged beyond busy work. Senior Star resident Shirley Skopic is up for any project, “I try to get to at least ten different things a week,” she said. Though she crocheted all of her life, this was her first time crocheting with plarn, a “yarn” made out of plastic bags.

The presentation will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 22 at Senior Star at Weber Place, 605 South Edward Drive.

Lewis men’s volleyball team defeats Loyola for MIVA title, will play USC in NCAA championships

The No. 7 Lewis men’s volleyball team will play the University of Southern California in the NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship, the NCAA announced on April 21.

The Flyers and Trojans will play in the second opening round match on April 30 at 7 p.m. CT. The first opening round match will take place this Thursday (April 25) between Princeton and Barton at Barton.

The winner of that match will advance to the third opening round match and will take on Pepperdine next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. PT Lewis was awarded the automatic bid after winning the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship on Saturday against Loyola.

The 2019 championship is hosted by Long Beach State at the Walter Pryamid.

Should the Flyers defeat USC, they would advance to the championship bracket to play the University of Hawaii, Manoa (27-2) in the semifinals on Thursday, May 2 at either 5 or 7:30 p.m. PT. Lewis enters the tournament with a record of 25-5 while USC owns an 18-10 record and is ranked No. 5 in the nation.

Tuesday’s contest marks the third straight year that the Flyers and Trojans will meet and it’s the second time the two sides have met in the NCAA Tournament.

Lewis swept Loyola to win the 2019 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship on Saturday night at Neil Carey Arena.

Lewis hit .459 in the match recording 40 kills against six errors in 74 attempts and was led

by Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/ Franklin) and Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) with 10 each.

Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/ Adolfo Camarillo) had 35 assists while Michael Simmons (Au-

rora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) finished with eight digs.

Moses was named the MIVA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Coenen and Yoshimoto.

Also making the All-Tournament team was Loyola’s Paul Narup and Collin Mahan, Purdue Fort Wayne’s Colton Stone and McKendree’s Zach Schnittker.

The Flyer defense held Loyola

to a .118 hitting percentage and registered 14 blocks and forced the Ramblers into 21 hitting errors.

Mahan led Loyola with nine kills while Will Tischler added eight and Kyle Piekarski finished with seven.

Garrett Zolg had 23 assists and Avery Aylsworth had a matchhigh 10 digs.

The opening set went backand-forth and was tied at six when Lewis went on a 10-3 run to grab a 16-9 lead.

Moses had a pair of kills in the run while Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS), TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/ Barrington HS) and Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/Minooka) had one apiece.

The lead eventually grew to eight and the Ramblers wouldn’t get closer than six points the rest of the set as the Flyers won 25-17.

Lewis hit .517 in the frame recording 16 kills against one error in 29 swings.

The Flyers used a 7-2 run early in set two to break a 3-3 tie and never looked back as they led by as many as seven points in the stanza.

Loyola got as close as three on a couple of occasions but Lewis pulled away down the stretch to win 25-18.

The Flyers hit .550 in the middle frame with 13 kills against two errors in 20 swings.

The Ramblers used a 4-1 run in set three to take its first lead of the match at 9-8 on a kill from Piekarski.

They continued to lead at 1312 when Lewis began to seize control with a 9-2 run to build a 21-15 lead.

The Flyer defense forced Loyola into five hitting errors in that run.

The Ramblers cut the lead to five twice including fighting off two championship points before Coenen finished it off with a kill.

It’s the first time since 2000 that Lewis has beaten Loyola three times in a season.

The sweep was the 18th of the season for Lewis including the three in the MIVA Tournament.

It’s the most during the Friend era for three-set wins.

BASEBALL The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced on Monday (April 22) that Lewis University’s Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./ St. Laurence) has been named the GLVC Baseball Player of the Week for the period ending April 21.

He went 12-for-21 (.571) at the plate with one home run, six doubles, nine runs batted in and 11 runs scored.

Rios posted a slugging percentage of 1.000 on the week with 21 total bases, while posting four multi-hit efforts.

He finished the Rockhurst series with a 2-for-3 effort, including a double, RBI and three runs scored in Lewis 12-2 win over the Hawks.

Rios recorded a career highs in hits and RBI with a 4-for-4 effort, including two doubles, five RBI and four runs scored in the 24-4 win over Parkside last Wednesday.

He went 6-for-14 in the William Jewell series, posting one home run, three doubles, three RBI and four runs scored.

For the week he threw out four of five base stealers.

He earns his first Player of the Week award and is the first Flyer to win the award since Kurt Becker won it on March 28, 2016.

“Anthony was locked in all week at the plate so it was great to see him get rewarded for his outstanding play,” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said.

“Even more impressive was his defense. He’s really playing well on both ends and we’ll need that to continue down the stretch.”

MEN’S GOLF Lewis University’s men’s golf team finished ninth at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships on April 22 at Panther Creek Country Club.

The Flyers posted a three-round score of 906 (+42) after a final round total of 300 (+12) on Monday. The top four teams after the tournament today (Missouri-St. Louis, 865, Indianapolis, 866, Bellarmine, 875 and Maryville, 884) advance to tomorrow’s medal/ match play competition.

The Flyers were led by Trey Tussey (LaSalle, Ill.) who finished in a tie for 15th with a three round score of 221 (72-75-74) to finish at +5 for the tournament.

Braden Bentley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) and Jimmy Roach (Naperville, Ill./ Neuqua Valley) finished in a tie for 32nd with each posting scores of 228.

Bentley shot a 77 in the third round while Roach tied with Tussey for the low round of the day for Lewis with a 74.

Cole Elmore (Salina, Kan.) shot a 75 in round three to finish with a score of 229 and was tied for 36th.

Hunter Pipik (New Berlin, Wisc./ New Berlin West) posted a score of 77 on Monday to finish with a total score of 240.

Budget billing for utilities is a great idea DEAR DAVE, I’m just starting my debt-free journey and trying to lay out a budget. What are your thoughts on budget billing for utilities?

RYAN DEAR RYAN, I think it’s wonderful! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. For a lot of folks, especially those in your situation, it helps smooth out utility payments and make them a little more manageable.

In most budget billing scenarios, they add up your utility bill for the last 12 months and divide

that total by twelve to determine a fixed billing amount for the next twelve months. It can make things so much easier when you’re first starting to live on a budget, and

you don’t have a lot of wiggle room where your finances are concerned.

I’m glad you’re taking steps to get control of your money, Ryan.

My annual sales are just over $100,000, and I have a couple of months in administrative and general expenses set aside. Should I have an emergency fund for my company, too? If so, how much?

TAYLOR DEAR TAYLOR,

This is a great question! I like the idea of a small business having six months of expenses set aside in an emergency fund. A financial cushion like that provides peace of mind and options. Also, it eliminates the need for borrowing money. With that kind of cash sitting around, you basically become your own line of credit.

When it comes to personal finance, I usually recommend setting aside an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses — depending on a person’s overall financial condition. But the basic idea is the same, regardless

of whether you’re talking about personal finance or the financial health of your small business.

An entrepreneur has enough to worry about on a day-to-day basis. Having a fully-funded emergency fund for your business can turn a disaster into nothing more than a minor inconvenience!

5 reasons why summer camp is a good choice Summer vacation offers students a respite from lessons and the routine of school. Children might once have eagerly awaited those final days of classes so they could lounge poolside, skip rocks across ponds and spend the long days of the season playing with friends.

But many of today’s youngsters spend much of their summer vacations indoors playing with their digital devices.

Perhaps that’s why one of the last vestiges of the classic summer vacation escape — summer camp — remains such a viable option for parents who want their children to get outdoors once the school year ends.

Although kids needn’t be in camp all summer long, a week or two can benefit campers of all ages.

The following are five reasons why summer camp might be the right

fit this year.

1. Explore talents. Summer camps help young people explore their unique interests and talents. Under an organized, yet often easygoing, camp schedule, kids can dabble in sports, arts and crafts, leadership, community support, and so many other activities that may not be fully available to them elsewhere.

2. Physical activity: Lots of camps build their itineraries around physical activities that takes place outdoors. Campers may spend their time swimming, running, hiking, playing sports, climbing, and so much more. This can be a welcome change for kids accustomed to living sedentary lifestyles. Regular physical activity has many health benefits and can set a foundation for healthy habits as an adult.

3. Gain confidence. Day and

sleepaway camps offer campers the opportunity to get comfortable in their own skin. Camps can foster activities in self-esteem by removing the academic measures of success and fill in with noncom-

petitive opportunities to succeed.

Campers learn independence, decision-making skills and the ability to thrive outside of the shadow of their parents, siblings or other students.

4. Try new things. Camp gives children the chance to try new things, whether that’s learning to cook, exploring new environments or embracing a new sport or leisure activity. Opening oneself up to new opportunities can build character and prove enlightening for children.

5. Make new friends. Camp is a great place to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Campers flood in from areas near and far.

This provides kids with a chance to expand their social circles beyond their immediate neighborhoods and schools.

Camps benefit children in a variety of ways. Lessons learned in camp can strengthen values, build confidence, develop coping mechanisms when adversity strikes, and enable campers to make lifelong friends.
