New apartments plans for Highpoint community Construction is anticipated to begin in June

Designed to attract an affluent millennial market, additional apartments will be making their way into Romeoville’s High Point community.

A final development plan was recently submitted to the Romeoville village board outlining plans for High Point Town Square Apartments, the final neighborhood to be developed within the community located off Weber and Taylor roads.

The uniquely crafted project is to include 72 rental apartments on two acres of land northwest of High Point and Friendship Circle.

Two types of apartments are to be

offered, six, six-unit carriage style homes with enclosed garages, and three, 12-unit liner buildings featuring 18 “work-live” units.

The “work-live” units was seen as a point of concern for neighbors who requested further clarification of the project. The developer explained these units would be a small number, considering the whole project, and would mainly consist of normal living space; living room, kitchen and bedroom but would be classified to allow the tenant to conduct business in his or her home. A list of approved professions would be defined and would cater more to those working as a computer tech, insurance agent, etc.; as opposed to anyone opening a cafe of sorts.

Community Development Director Steve Rockwell said these one-level units are meant to be entrepreneurial incubators rather than retail. Renters do not need to operate a business to rent one of

the units.

“I think we have had very good discussion and overall this is a nice fit for that area,” said Trustee Dave Richards. “At the end of the day, we are talking about putting 72 units in an apartment complex; that’s where they belong.

This is nothing that unique other than that it is a different design.”

Additional foot traffic was also a concern. Rockwell also explained that most of the activity goes into the properties and into the courtyards, not into the streets.

However, the developer did add a compromise to construct a steel fence to the plan in an effort to reduce the amount of any increased foot traffic and the possibility of anyone running through a neighbor’s backyard, etc.

“High Point has been great neighbors and has done a lot for the community and the whole area,” said Romeoville Mayor John Noak. “This site is a modernization

of the current product to meet the demands of today and the developer is trying to be innovative with these units and I am hoping that works. Fact is, there are certain tax advantages to labeling it that way so the renter has superior deduction abilities; that’s why it is label and designed that way.”

The plan for additional apartments in that section dates back more than 20 years and was already approved though time and money did not dictate the need for more apartments.

Times have changed, explained Noak, who said the village is receptive to the developer now adding a different model of apartments, also indicating that the need for suburban rentals has grown.

“Obviously we wouldn’t invest in this, if we didn’t think it would work,” said Richards.

“We’ve done our own consulting and there is a rental market—lot of people looking for that; not

flooding the market compared to apartments than homes.”

The apartment sizes will range on average from 650 square-feet for one-bedroom units to 1,500 square-feet for two-bedroom apartments and average rental prices will range from range from $1,250 to $1,975 a month.

The Development Plan reinforces the central focus of activity for the town square and integrates the existing Friendship Center Park into the new neighborhood with supporting pocket parks, like courtyards between the buildings.

The High Point Town Square Apartments are described as a unique offering in the Chicagoland marketplace are are to include a combination of large apartments, high-grade finishes, premium garages, Energy Star sustainability, and formal classical land plan and architecture.

Construction is anticipated to begin in June.

Chamber recognizes best of village businesses

In a record turnout, with more than 100 entries and 55 finalists, the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce awarded the best of the best at its 13th Annual Best of Bolingbrook (BOBB) Awards banquet held recently at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

Recognizing businesses’ contributions to the community and their success was paramount

throughout the event. Taking home the top prize, 2017 Best of Bolingbrook Business Award was bd’s Mongolian Grill.

“They were truly deserving of the award and representative of what a business can do for the community,” said Executive Director of the Chamber Kevin O’Keeffe.

The Best of Bolingbrook Gala is an annual event that pays homage to businesses in Bolingbrook for their accomplishments. Local businesses are nominated as by their peers, reviewed by indepen-

dent judging committee. Winners do not know that they have won the award until they are announced on stage.

Other category winners for the evening included Bolingbrook Lions Club in the civic and government category, Andy’s Frozen Custard in the restaurant and hospitality category, PT Solutions in the professional services category, Costco Wholesale in the retail category, Wi-tronix in the small business category, CEP Exhibit Productions Inc. in the mid-sized

business category, Ulta Beauty in the large business category, and Cruise Planners in the rising star category (in business less than two years).

O’Keeffe explained that the BOBB awards are meant to focus on how much these businesses mean to the community.

“Small business matters,” said O’Keeffe. “We have so many active in the Chamber and their success really stands out. It is nice to see this level of activity.”

O’Keeffe also called attention

to another of the event’s purpose, honoring the people of the village who also stand out. Larry Greenwich of DuAll Heating and Cooling presented the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award to James S. “Jim” Boan of the Village of Bolingbrook and Jim Galbraith of Advantage Chevrolet presented the 2017 Business Leadership Award to Mir Ali of the Shamrock Companies.

Boan has been in public service for more than 40 years. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Illinois, Jim worked with the Bolingbrook Park District from 1973-1984, where he started as the Superintendent of Parks and advanced to Director of the District. During his 11 years with the district, 16 neighborhood park sites were acquired and developed with playgrounds and ball fields.

In addition, playgrounds were installed at each of the Bolingbrook elementary schools.

He was instrumental in the development of many park amenities including; the DeatherageDrdak Center for senior citizens, a SEE CHAMBER PAGE 19

Help spread the word to end disrespectful language I was beaming with pride one morning in spring 2002.

This was the best day so far of my sixth grade year in junior high as I had just made the honor roll list for the first time. The honor roll list was posted in the front lobby of the school. I was standing behind some of my peers, none of whom was diagnosed with disabilities. All of a sudden something hit me like a brick: “Why is that retard on the list?” I heard a few of my peers say, not knowing who might be standing behind them.

Because of these hurtful comments, I was shy among my peers for the rest of my junior high school days.

“Using the ‘r-word’ against us [Special Olympics] athletes hurts us because most people don’t think before they actually say the words,” said Georgia Hunter, my friend and fellow athlete and Global Messenger in Special Olympics Illinois. Georgia was diagnosed with Down syndrome.

A week ago on March 1, hundreds of thousands of people across the country were spreading awareness in the ninth annual w campaign. I had an opportunity to give a speech that day to approximately 700 students at Pontiac Township High School in Pontiac, Ill. on how the “r-word” has affected me and why this campaign is important. I learned soon after my speech that the words I spoke touched many people.

For those of us with special needs, as well as for our family and friends, the word “retard(ed),” or the “r-word” as it is referred to in the campaign, is offensive — even when the word is not directed toward us. If someone uses the “r-word” about an inanimate object to mean that the object is slow or annoying, this connotes indirectly that those of us with special needs might learn or act a little slower than others.

“The cool thing about Spread the Word to End the Word is that there are thousands of events across the country, and everyone kind of goes about it a bit differently,” said Tim Shriver Jr., cofounder of the campaign. “Every event has a pledge banner where people sign their name and take the pledge to not only stop using the ‘r-word’ [themselves’] but to speak up when others use it.”

Besides ending the “r-word,” the campaign has a broader focus for the future. The campaign strives to create a community of tolerance, equality, understanding, and respect for all peo-

ple—in particular for those of us with special needs. Self-advocacy is part of that broader focus.

“The importance of self-advocates is a huge part of what we do,” said Soeren Palumbo, a co-founder with Tim Shriver Jr. of the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. “Each person has an incredibly rich story that’s behind their reason to take a pledge to improve the world for people with intellectual disabilities.”

Before I spoke to the Pontiac high school students, I was standing outside the auditorium talking with Laura Baumgardner, a Special Education teacher who champions the Spread the Word to End the Word activities at her school. Baumgardner told me that the elementary school students in her school district are learning that the “r-word” means “respect.” These children do not necessarily even know that the other “r-word” (retard) is used as a derogatory term— hate speech— about those of us with intellectual and developmental differences. As for the Pontiac high school students, the word “respect” is so engrained in them as the only “r-word” of choice. This was evidenced by what a respectful audience they were for me. These are the leaders of the future. The youth of today, affectionately named the “Unified Generation” by Special Olympics, will lead us to a respectful world of understanding and inclusion for those of us with special needs.

When I was born three-and-a-third months premature 28-years ago, people commonly used the “r-word” as an acceptable term to describe people with visible and invisible intellectual differences. Fast forward to present day, medical professionals and the mainstream community at large are becoming more understanding and respectful with their word choice.

Take my sister, Stefanie Smrokowski, 26, for example. She is a doctor of physical therapy and has grown up with an

older brother who has special needs.

She feels encouraged about the declining use of the “r-word” among medical professionals.

“It’s becoming very common knowledge that you should not use that word,” Stefanie said, adding that she rarely hears the word, especially among younger physical therapists. “There are still some people that maybe aren’t as aware of that, but I think in general we’re all going towards that being common sense to not use that word.”

Soeren hopes that the trend within the medical community extends to the mainstream community as well. “What we’re hoping is there’s that same trend in the wider community,” said Soeren.

My friend Tim Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics, Inc., said that trend is encouraging.

“Your sister’s quote gives us all confidence that we can win the battle against humiliation and ‘play unified’ to teach respect the world over,” he wrote in an email regarding a previous Special Voices column.

There are, of course, those who still use the “r-word.” Rob Johnson, a leading news anchor for CBS-2 Chicago, hopes that those who still use the “rword” to mean something that is dumb or less than, do a better job with their word choice.

“If you use the words ‘retard’ or ‘retarded’ to explain something that doesn’t make sense, then I would say to you that you do not have a very good command of the English language and you can do better,” said Rob Johnson.

When someone in the mainstream community befriends or plays unified with someone with special needs, they will soon discover the joy and accomplishments that the person has. Despite cognitive struggles that myself and others with special needs face on a daily basis, we overcome our challenges by celebrating the abilities that we do have.

Bolingbrook wins regional title in win over PJ Pipes, Lemont

The Bolingbrook boys basketball team this season is like a good prize fighter.

The Raiders know that as long as they can withstand an opponents’ first punch, they have the skill and ability to punch back later.

That was what happened Friday night in Bolingbrook’s 63-54 win over Lemont in the Sandburg Regional final.

The Raiders (27-1) were down to Lemont (16-12) early thanks in part to Indians’ guard P.J. Pipes, who became Lemont’s all-time leading scorer in the first quarter.

“We are fortunate enough to win and that is all you really ask for in this situation,” said Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost. “We don’t really worry about style points in the playoffs. I am really proud of how the guys kept their composure.

“That is a great team with one really, really, really, really good

player and they had a perfect game plan for us. If there is a better No. 9 seed in the state, I would like to see them and since P.J has been back, they have only lost two games.”

With just more than 7 minutes left in the game, Lemont was up 49-48 and smelling one of the biggest upsets in the state.

But behind the play of Malik Binns, Kaleb Thornton and Nebraska recruit Nana Akenten, Bolingbrook stormed back and held off for the win.

“They came out here and they fought and we fought. We just have to keep our composure and keep playing,” Akenten said. “We just have to keep fighting. We are going to get everyone’s best – we have all year, but in the playoffs we are getting it even more.”

Binns led the Raiders with 16 points, while Akenten added 13 and Thornton 11.

Pipes equaled Binns’ 16 and ended his Lemont career with 1,259 points.

Flyer softball earns pair of big wins Clermont, Fla. Lewis University’s Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) combined for eight RBI, four runs and four hits as the Flyer softball team cruised to the 13-4 (5 inn.) regional win over Ferris State on Monday (March 6).

Prieto was 3-for-3 with five RBI, three runs scored, a pair of doubles and a triple, while Guske plated three runs in the Flyer win.

Lewis also received two hits apiece from senior center fielder Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and sophomore first baseman Carley Maupin (Peotone, Ill./Peotone).

Both scored a run, while Maupin added a RBI. With the win, Lewis improves to 6-3 on the season, while Ferris State drops to 2-8 on the campaign.

Lewis freshman pitcher Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) earned her first career win in relief for the Flyers. Boelte (1-0) tossed three innings of scoreless relief, while allowing two hits and striking out one.

Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (March 7) with contests against both Cedarville (1 PM ET) and St. Cloud State (6 PM ET).

A game earlier, Lewis was clicking on all cylinders as the Flyers earned the 16-2 (5 inn.)

regional victory over Northwood on Monday (March 6).

Lewis’ trio of senior shortstop Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./ Lemont), junior catcher Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and sophomore pitcher Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) each went 2-for-3 with three RBI. DeMasi (3 runs) added a tworun homer and Sanders and Jaworski both scored twice in the win.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 5-3 on the campaign, while the Timberwolves drop to 6-6 overall.

Sanders (3-0) was equally as impressive in the circle, as she allowed just one hit and struck out five batters.

The Flyers also received solid offensive performances from freshman Guske and freshman second baseman Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic).

Guske went 2-for-3 and scored twice, while Bukovsky drove in two runs and added a run.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Lewis University women’s basketball team will head to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fifth-straight season.

The Flyers received an atlarge berth and the No. 6 seed in the upcoming NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament, hosted by top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Ashland.

The Flyers (23-8) will meet No. 3 seeded Saginaw Valley State (22-7) on Friday (March 10) at a yet-to-be determined time.

The Flyers defeated Saginaw Valley State earlier this season, 8043, on December 30th.

Lewis entered this weekend’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament as the No. 9 team in the Midwest Region, but the Flyers’ run to the championship game cemented their status in the postseason.

“I am so thrilled for our players,” Lewis head women’s basketball coach Kristen Gillespie said. “This weekend we made a statement that we belong in the tournament.

“All year long we have been aiming for March and we are playing our best basketball right now.”

Young Spartans fall to Joliet West

Friday night’s Plainfield Central Regional final between Joliet West and Romeoville was a battle of experience vs. youth.

The Tigers came in as defending regional champs and had four senior starters.

Meanwhile, it had been several years since the Spartans competed in a regional championship and had just one senior starter.

That helped lead to a 72-44 Joliet West win for its second straight regional title.

“You have to tip your cap to West,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “Their seniors came out and basically in a win or go home, they showed their experience and their battletested background and it proved too strong tonight.”

West jumped out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter and 36-22 at the half.

“We wanted to come out and prove a point,” West point guard Teyvion Kirk said. “We wanted to set the tone early and come out with a lot of energy and intensity. We wanted to take a big lead and coast the rest of the way. (In the other games) we built a big lead and took them lightly. We wanted to get up big and keep it big.”

In the first two meetings, West built up a big lead only to see Romeoville come back both times in the second half. This time that wouldn’t be the case as a 13-0 Tiger run early in the third quarter put the game away at 50-24.

“I reminded them at halftime that both of our previous games with them we were up by 20 and they went on a big run,” DiForti said. “I even did it at the time outs. They put up numbers quick and I didn’t want to go through it.”

Kirk finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds from his point guard position, while Trevian Bell added 16 points and seven rebounds as the tandem spearheaded a fast paced attack.

“They sped us completely up,” Howard said. “We played against them two games prior where I thought we did a good job pacing ourselves and at times controlling the pace.

Tonight they just sped us up and dominated the trenches. Any time they had the opportunity to run they were down court. I wish them all the best because they have a good nucleus there.”

The Tigers now take on city rival Joliet Central at 7 p.m.

Wednesday in a Lincoln-Way East Sectional semifinal.

While the Spartans’ season drew to a close, the experience

won’t be one lost on the school and community.

“It was a good experience for us and our student body,” Howard said.”It has been a while since we have been a part of a regional championship game and I’m very proud of the school and community for how they backed us tonight. It is our goal to bring them back into this environment in the near future and have us hold up that trophy for Romeoville.”

With all of the youth on the roster, it appears the Spartans are in good shape to get back to a regional final next year.

“Our guys are hungry, that is one thing I’m really impressed about,” Howard said. “They want to achieve big things. They see themselves getting to the state tournament. That is what the strive for. They talk about it all the time. It isn’t just about conference wins, it is about bigger things. There is so much success around us with Joliet West and Bolingbrook. Our guys want to be one of those stories going forward.”

The Spartans finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 16-12 record.

“It is a successful year,” Howard said. “Ultimately, we are looking to define success by achieving trophies in regionals and sectionals.”

DEAR DAVE, When it comes to making a will, would it suffice to sit down and write it all out on a piece of paper, then have it notarized?

JOYCE DEAR JOYCE, I would never advise someone to write their own will, unless, of course, they’re an attorney in that state. Laws can vary from state to state, and some states may not look upon a document like that as being official under law. Some even require witnesses, and a notary might not be good enough.

If you’re trying to save money by doing it this way, I would strongly urge you to look at involving a lawyer as an investment. In most cases, having a reputable lawyer draw up a legally correct, state-specific will doesn’t cost a lot of money.

At the very least, go online to USLegalForms.com. They have all kinds of state-specific legal forms, including wills.

Your last will and testament is one of the most important legal documents you’ll ever be part of. Please don’t try to do this yourself, Joyce. I’ve run into so many families who, in the midst of grieving the loss of a loved one, were handed a handwritten piece of paper that wouldn’t hold up in court. That kind of thing just adds more stress to an already heartbreak-

Do you think this is a good start toward getting my credit back on track and taking control of my finances? I make $50,000 a year, and I have $3,500 in debt and $2,100 in savings.

MARIA DEAR MARIA, No, getting a secured credit card is not a good idea. Let me tell you a couple of things.

Number One, your income is your most powerful wealth-

building tool. If you don’t have any payments, you have the ability to build wealth and be generous. When you have debt, all you do is send money out the door to make payments. So, being in debt is a guaranteed way to stay broke.

Number Two, you can get a home mortgage with no credit score through a manual underwriting. Just make sure you have a good, long history of paying other things, like your rent and utilities on time. You would also need to have all your debts paid off completely, and the accounts closed for at least six months.

I want you to become debt-

free before you buy a home, Maria. I also want you to save an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses and a down payment before you buy a home. Buying a house when you’re broke and in debt is a really bad idea.
