Officials proactive regarding school safety “Valley View is one of the preeminent school districts in the metropolitan Chicago area, if not the country when it comes to the safety and security of its students and staff.”

In the aftermath of the Florida school shooting, school safety is a top priority, and one that is not lost on the local community.

Days after the Florida shooting, Valley View School District 365u Superintendent James Mitchem

issued a message, ensuring the district takes steps everyday “to maximize deterrents and minimize threats to the greatest extent possible.”

“Valley View is one of the preeminent school districts in the metropolitan Chicago area, if not the country when it comes to the safety and security of its students and staff,” said Valley View Safety Direc-

tor Carter Larry. “We have an amazing collaborative partnership with our board, senior administrators, staff, local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and other emergency management agencies.

However, we don’t take our responsibility to the community lightly, nor do we rest on our laurels.”

He said the district constantly reviews best practices,continually trains staff and has implemented safety protocols that other districts have yet to consider.

“As technology, training standards and policies evolve; we will

remain fluid and evolve as well,” said Larry.

Calling it one of the most comprehensive public school security systems in the country, Mitchem rallied that its systems are backed up by a staff that with continued practice is trained in how to keep students safe.

“One of our greatest safety measures is created by the time our staff members use every day simply getting to know our students. Our staff does much more than provide instruction that aligns with our curriculum. Our staff is also invested in the social and emotional growth of students so we can assist them in navigating the road from childhood to adulthood,” said Mitchem in his message.

Mitchem called on the community to understand their role in keeping our schools safe, urging anyone and everyone to speak up.

“Quite simply, if you see something or know something, say something. If you know of a student who is struggling, keep in mind we have comprehensive student services teams at every one of our schools. We are here to help and we have the people in place who work every day to make a difference in the lives of kids,” said Mitchem.

Larry echoed that fact.

“If you see something say something,” said Larry. “The students, staff and parents will always be our first line of defense. I am very grateful for those who have come forward and reported threats regardless of whether or not they didn’t know if it was credible. You allow me and my staff to be even more effective in the performance of our duties, and for that I say thank you.”

Larry explains that drills and tactics used in school lockdowns have evolved over time and that Valley View’s drills are anything but routine.

“Although the Illinois Safety Drill Act requires a certain number of evacuation drills per year, Valley View School District’s schools go above and beyond the minimum standards required by the State Statute. We do this because we want our students and staff to be prepared to react and respond for a real incident,” said Larry.

It remains important that students listen to building staff, and take the drills seriously. Larry maintains that teachers need to review pro-

tocols, ask questions if there is an issue with how to respond or where to go, and remain vigilant.

With controversy in the political arena in regards to arming teachers, Valley View stands opposed to the measure.

“We continue to drill and inform our teachers about new tactics and training that exist,” said Larry. As a district we continue to strive to keep our staff prepared, informed, and confident in their ability to respond in a critical incident.”

He said the district’s procedures are being consistently reviewed and updated.

“It is a never-ending process,” said Larry. “...Valley View is a school district that proactively researches information, new training standards, policies and procedures as they become available. Then we work with our school board on the best way to implement those changes into the district.”

The district has had its own incidents of suspicious behavior, acting on student reports of a student with a weapon. Though the weapon was fake, the incident was both disruptive and disturbing nonetheless.

“Our staff worked tirelessly with the Bolingbrook and Romeoville Police Departments, the Tinley Park FBI Task Force, and Will County State’s Attorney’s office on tracking students down. Those students then received swift and appropriate consequences for alarming and disturbing the community. We take every threat very seriously,” said Larry.

According to the district’s website, in addition to its collaboration with local authorities, various measures have been taken at each school.

The district has in place, lockdown alarms in every one of our schools. When the alarm is activated, an alert is sent to law enforcement and the entire building that a lockdown has been initiated.

Through extensive training, staff knows what to do to keep students safe until law enforcement arrives to assist.

Outside, blue lockdown indicator lights at the main and secondary entrances and all corners of each school will alert anyone coming onto the school grounds that the school is in a hard or soft lockdown.

In one of Bolingbrook’s most celebrated fundraising events, recognized nationally as one of the largest, community members will be coming together, going bald for a cure, at the annual

More than 200 individuals are expected to come out to shave their head in support of research for childhood cancer Sunday March 11, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, 20001 Rodeo Drive. The event honors kids, who have or have had cancer, and their families, who are from Bolingbrook and nearby towns.

The event includes a huge selection of raffle prizes, food vendors, an Irish dance performance, and many other fun activities for people of all ages. Lincoln pivotal in securing Springfield as state capital

BY KATE SCHOTT OF THE STATE JOURNALREGISTER When state lawmakers head to the Capitol to do the people’s business, they travel to Sp r i n g f i e l d .

But that wasn’t always the case.

Springfield became the state’s third capital city in 1839. And the story of how Springfield became the capital is a tall tale … well, it’s a tale with an outcome scripted by nine tall men.

Illinois has been governed from three cities and six buildings (one that was rented and five that were owned by the state), as told in an article in the 1975-76 edition of the legislative Illinois Blue Book. Kaskaskia was the first state capital after Illinois was admitted to the union in 1818, with the 29 House members and 14 senators in the first General Assembly of Illinois working in a rented two-story brick building at a cost of $4 per day.

Yet by December 1820, the second General Assembly was meeting in a new building in a new capital city, Vandalia, which was a more central location within the state’s original 16 southern counties. Lawmakers agreed Vandalia would remain the capital city for at least the next 20 years.

But it didn’t take long for many Illinois lawmakers - including a young state legislator who would go on to become the nation’s 16th president - to cite location as they began petitioning for the capital to be moved again. The argument this time for relocating was that the capital should be closer to the geographical center of the state.

In 1833 the General Assembly decided to ask voters, via the next general election, to weigh in on where the capital should be, according to the Blue Book history. Vandalia, Jacksonville, Springfield, Peoria, Alton and the state’s actual geographical center were the options. Although Alton emerged with a slim majority, the results were ruled inconclusive.

The idea of moving the capital continued to percolate, with talk put into action during the 1836-37 legislative session when Abraham Lincoln intro-

duced legislation that would move the capital to Springfield. He had the backing of eight legislative colleagues of the Whig Party who were called the Long Nine, as their aggregate height was 54 feet, according to the history provided in the 1975-76 Blue Book.

An opponent to Springfield as the new location was a legislative foe Lincoln knew well; Stephen A. Douglas, who also was serving in the General Assembly and wanted Jacksonville to be the state capital. And the people of Vandalia weren’t about to give up easily: They built a new brick statehouse in an attempt to keep the legislature where it was.

That effort was for naught, as after four balloting attempts Springfield received the majority of votes needed to move the state capital. There have been allegations over the years that the Long Nine traded favors in order for Springfield to emerge triumphant, although Sen. Paul Simon in his book “Lincoln’s Preparation for Greatness” disputed that notion. Regardless of how the decision came to pass, state government began operating in Springfield by the end of 1839.

Work began in 1837 on a new Capitol building on the Springfield Town Square, with the first Capitol building providing room for the state House and Senate, the governor and other elected officials, as well as housing the Illinois Supreme Court, according to the book “A. Lincoln: His Illinois,” published by The State Journal-Register in 2008.

As the state’s population grew, so too

did its government, and within a few decades a bigger building was needed to accommodate the elected officials.

Construction began on the current Capitol building in 1868 and was finished in 1888, although lawmakers moved in about halfway through the construction process. The first building, now known as the Old State Capitol, remains and is often used for reenactments, performances, rallies and political speeches.

As the state’s capital, Springfield has witnessed some of the most important political moments in Illinois history. It’s where Lincoln gave his “House Divided” speech, in which he condemned slavery. Almost 150 years later, it’s where Barack Obama announced in 2007 he was running for president of the United States.

Of course, it’s also where four governors who later went to prison on various charges served as chief executive of the state. And as long as Springfield remains Illinois’ capital city, it will continue to be where some of the most politically important decisions about Illinois are made.

STEM Fest brings out the fun of science, tech White Oak’s annual STEM Fest brings out the fun of science, technology, engineering, math

More than 600 people came out to experience how using science and technology work to make life a little more than interesting.

White Oak Library District hosted its second annual STEM Fest March 3 where visitors enjoyed a full day of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at its Romeoville branch.

From flying a plane into a windtunnel to pod racing, a variety of vendors from various museums, colleges and universities and community organizations offered stimulating, hands-on activities during the day.

As the push to bring science and engineering to the forefront on a national level increases, a local opportunity to learn science is awesome, was at the heart of the district’s STEM fest.

Free crafts and raffle prizes were offered throughout the day as well as presentations from the Sci Tech Museum, Lewis University, Joliet Junior College, Children’s Museum of Oak Lawn, STEM Scouts, Village of Romeoville TV, Science Ninja, College of DuPage STEM Department, TnT Paranormal, Pilcher Park Nature Center Rescue, author Janet Riehecky, Bolingbrook Amateur Radio Society, K9/Chibots, Joliet Cyborgs Robotics Team, IMSA (Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy), and USDA Forest Service - Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.

Dave DiNaso’s Traveling Worlds of Reptiles also made an appearance for two shows.

According to national standards, STEM is becoming a priority as the realization that there are less students

studying these pursuits, potentially leaving expertise in these career fields lacking. According to the US Department of Education, STEM jobs are expected to grow at almost double the rate of the national average in the near future, and currently there are not enough adults educated in STEM fields to fill current jobs.

The White Oak Library District was able to host STEM Fest thanks to a grant provided by CITGO and its continued support from the Friends of the White Oak Library District.

There were many positive things for the Romeoville boys basketball team this season.

Except for the fact that it didn’t last long enough.

The Spartans hoped to capture a regional title for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century and advance back to their home court for the sectional.

But instead they fell behind big early and went onto lose to Lincoln-Way East 61-48 on Friday, March 2 in the championship game of the Class 4A LincolnWay Central Regional.

Sam Shafer scored a game high 24 points and added 11 rebounds to make sure he and his Griffin teammates won a regional championship for the first time in school history. Shafer, a Southern Illinois University recruit, had plenty of help, however. Fellow senior guards

Joey Buggemi (18 points) and Zach Parduhn (17 points) also contributed huge points in the second half as No. 3 seeded East (23-5) advanced to play No. 2 seeded West Aurora. The Blackhawks (23-4), which won their 15th straight game by pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 69-54 victory to win the Plainfield South Regional, met East on Wednesday, March 7 at 7 PM in the second semifinal game of the Romeoville Sectional.

Dontia Johnson had a teamhigh 22 points for Romeoville (20-8), which fell short in its bid to win a regional for only the second time in school history.

The No. 6 seeded Spartans, who won a regional in 1994, lost in the regional title game for the second straight season. [72-44 to Joliet West last year]. But they did officially reach 20 wins for the first time in school history.

Games, especially regional title ones, aren’t often won in the first five minutes or so. But last Friday’s was. Shafer scored 10 of the Griffins first 13 points and they raced out to a large lead.

Shafer capped the outburst on a pair of 3-pointers and his one from the right wing with 2:32 left in the first quarter made it 13-0.

That also sent Shafer into celebration as he knew the start was just what the Griffins wanted.

“We really wanted to come out early and get a big lead,” Shafer said. “We noticed that when things didn’t go [the Spartans] way against Lincoln-Way Central [in a 50-40 semifinal win on Wednesday, Feb. 28], they put their heads down. We wanted to make them put their heads down.”

Romeoville coach Marc Howard certainly was impressed with East.

“We couldn’t get over the hump,” Howard said of the big opening deficit. “Shafer had a great night. He was scoring from everywhere. But as good as Shafer was, you have to give those guards, number 2 [Parduhn] and number 3 [Buggemi] credit, too. Lincoln-Way East was the better team.

“On the offensive end, we couldn’t find the basket. Maybe we were nervous. We were rushing shots and the first eight or nine possessions, I think we

Sophomore forward Destin Whitaker finally put the Spartans on the board with a 15-foot rebound bucket with 2:19 left in the first quarter. East led 15-6 after one quarter. Romeoville kept chipping away to open the second quarter, however, pulling within 21-17 on a 3-pointer by senior guard DeMonte Dale (6 points) with 4:12 left in the half.

At that point Shafer had 18 of the Griffins 21 points. But the team knew others would have to step up and that’s what happened as Parduhn hit a 3-pointer 33 seconds later to restore the lead to seven. Ahead 24-19, Shafer, Parduhn and Buggemi went 6-of-6 from the free throw line in a 6-0 run before Romeoville scored the final points of the first half to trim the Griffin advantage to 30-21 at intermission.

“We knew we had the skills to play with Romeoville,” said Parduhn, who scored 11 points in the second half. “We remembered the feeling of losing this game (59-49 to host Joliet Central) last year and didn’t want that again. It’s just just everybody knowing their roll. We certainly were not expecting to get up 13-0. But we were well prepared to play them after the teams we played in our conference, like Bolingbrook and H-F. “Sam [Shafer] had one of the best games I have ever seen. He put the team on his back, and we just played along with him.”

With the Spartans trailing 3221, they made one last move to get back in the game. Johnson,

a 6 foot-7 senior forward, scored six straight points and cut the lead to five with 4:33 left in the third. But ahead 37-29, Parduhn scored four points and Shafer converted off his own rebound as the lead grew back to double digits.

East led 43-32 after three and when Buggemi banged home a 3-pointer and Parduhn pulled through the lane for a layup and a 48-32 lead with 6:27 to play, it was pretty much over. Buggemi had 14 points in the second half.

The Spartans never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

DeAndre Heckard added 11 points for the Spartans, but fellow senior guard Eddie Creal - a transfer from Joliet West, was held to just two points and fouled out with 1:04 to play in the game.

“That number 10 [ Johnson] is really a nice player,” East coach Rich Kolimas said. “Even when it was 13-0, we couldn’t let our guard down. You just don’t know what might happen when you’re playing a really athletic team and they start turning us over. A lead can be gone in a hurry. But we wanted to take away their drive to the paint and make them shoot outside, and that’s what we did.”

A couple of days before the Spartans pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat host Lincoln-Way Central 50-40 in the regional semifinal. Heckard had a game-high 17 points and Creal and junior guard Mike Salter added 11 points apiece.

The No. 12 seeded Knights (16-12) entered the game having won 8-of-10 since mid January.

But they had a bad stretch in the fourth quarter.

The score was tied 29-29 when Central’s Chris Robinson (team-high 16 points) hit a free throw with 7:38 to play in the game. The senior guard, who was a 4-year varsity player, also hit the second free throw.

But the Knights were called for a violation, nullifying the attempt and turning the ball over to Romeoville.

From there the Spartans went on an 11-0 blitz in just over two minutes. Salter (11 points) started it with a jumper at the 7:08 mark and Creal (11 points) capped it off on a steal and a slam for a 40-29 lead with 5:01 to play in the game.

Central clawed back within 43-38 when Robinson hit a pair of free throws with 1:23 to play. But Heckard, who had five points in the 11-0 run and 10 points in the fourth quarter - including hitting 8-of-9 free throws, converted four straight from the line in a 16 second span to give the Spartans a 4738 lead with 36 seconds to play.

Freshman guard Sean Curran scored 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, for the Knights.

But they were hampered by 21 turnovers in the game.

The game started slow as both teams combined for more early turnovers than points. Central had eight in the first quarter, but the Spartans also committed five of their 14 in the game in the opening eight minutes. the Knights led 4-2 midway through the quarter on a steal and layup by senior forward Andrew Hancock (4 points). But Romeoville went on a 9-0 run in

just over two minutes to take an 11-4 lead with 1:36 left. A couple of 3-pointers by Robinson drew the Knights within 13-10 at the end of the opening quarter.

The Knights picked it back up on defense and a Curran 3-pointer with 4:05 left in the second quarter gave them a 1513 advantage. Once again, however, the Spartans went on a 9-0 run before settling on a 22-17 halftime lead.

Down 25-23, Curran hit a 3-pointer and senior guard Luke Handley (5 points) converted a rebound bucket to put the Knights ahead 28-25 with 1:54 to play in the third. Salter sank a trey with just under a minute to play in the third quarter to tie the game and it went to the fourth deadlocked at 28-28.

A trio of seniors were 4-year varsity players for the ‘Ville.

The were Heckard, Johnson and Khalil Blakney. Creal, Dale, Evan Lee, Joseph Olinger and Connor Pitcher rounded out the eight Spartan seniors.

“I was coming off my first season, when we went 4-22, when those guys came in,” Howard said of Blakney, Heckard and Johnson. “With them, we went from nine wins to 10 to 16 to 20.

These guys wanted to brand us ‘The Ville. They wanted to play exciting basketball and we did.

“We were first at the WJOL Tournament, second in the [Southwest Prairie] Conference, and final four at the Big Dipper [Christmas] Tournament. I’m proud of the kids. Even though they weren’t able to hold a regional plaque over their heads, they taught our school how to win.”

Pulliam tabbed as Midwest Region AOY The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named junior Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill., Romeoville) Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year on March 5.

Pulliam earned the honor after winning the triple jump with 13.02 meters and long jump with 6.04 meters at conference breaking the record in both. Her triple was an automatic qualifying leap and she picked up a provisional in the long jump. She ranks second in the nation in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump.

“Cierra had one of the best meets in GLVC history.” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said.

“Two Glvc records in the long and triple jump, with just two attempts was pretty amazing. This award was well deserved!”

Pulliam heads to nationals March 9-10 in Pittsburg, Kansas where she’ll compete in the triple and long jump.

PLANEK Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek was named Monday morning among 2017-18 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Under Armour Athletics Directors of the Year (ADOY).

The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II III, NAIA/Other FourYear Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges), with four honorees in each for a total of 28 winners. All 28 will be recognized during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on Friday, June 29 at NACDA’s 53rd Annual Convention at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C. “We at Lewis congratulate Dr. Planek on this very prestigious award and feel he is most deserving of this honor,” Senior Vice President for Student Services Joe Falese said. “John has lead our Athletic Department through unprecedented success in recent years and this success has been a source of tremendous pride within our university community. Under John’s leadership our student athletes have en-

joyed remarkable success in the classroom, on the playing field and in the local community.”

Dr. Planek is in is his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at Lewis. In his time the Flyers have had tremendous success in many sports, highlighted by men’s volleyball’s runner-up finish in the 2015 NCAA Division I tournament.

In the classroom Lewis has a 92 percent academic success rate in 2017 and a cumulative GPA of 3.32 in 2016-17. There have been 25 Academic All-Americans and 13 teams received Academic All-GLVC awards in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

During his stint, three teams have been ranked No. 1 in the nation: men’s volleyball in 2015, women’s basketball in 2015 and women’s volleyball in 2017. It was the first time in program history that the women’s basketball and women’s volleyball team were ranked No. 1. In 2015 the women’s basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight, while the women’s volleyball team finished in the top four in the country in 2016.

The past three school years have seen the Lewis Athletic Department earn two top 10 finishes in the NCAA Division II Learfield Directors’ Cup. The Flyers finished fourth in 2015, followed by a sixth-place showing in 2016. The fourth place finish was the highest in school history and the back-to-back top 10 finishes is the best two year stretch in school history.

The Flyers have finished in second place in the GLVC AllSports trophy standings each year Planek has been at Lewis.

In 2012-13, Lewis won the GLVC Commissioners Cup. There have been 54 teams in all who have advanced to the NCAA championships during Planek’s tenure, while 17 teams have won GLVC championships.

BASKETBALL For the sixth straight season, Lewis’s women’s basketball team will be playing in the NCAA Tournament. They learned this evening as the NCAA announced the field of 64.

The Flyers are the sixth seed in this upcoming weekend’s Midwest Region tournament which will be held in Ashland, Ohio.

They will take on the number

three Southern Indiana for the fourth time this year.

Lewis (23-7) advanced to the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament where it lost to Southern Indiana 76-68 on Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill. The Flyers will be making their 13th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance.

They’re 6-12 all-time in NCAA Tournament games and won the Midwest Regional championship in 2015. Last year Lewis was defeated in the opening round

by Saginaw Valley 70-66.

The top-eight teams in the Midwest Region advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Midwest Region is comprised of the GLVC, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

The winners of the three conference tournaments all received automatic bids, those were Ashland, Drury and Hillsdale.

This year’s regional will be played Friday, March 9 through Monday, March 12. Ashland, the defending national champions, earned the top seed and will host the Midwest Region Tournament.

Do employer contributions count toward the 15 percent you recommend putting into retirement?

BRENDA DEAR BRENDA, Investing 15 percent of your income in retirement accounts is Baby Step 4 of my plan. That means you’ve already paid off all your debt, except for your home, and you’ve increased your $1,000 beginner’s emergency fund to a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

I want you to control your destiny, so employer contributions do not count toward the 15 percent I recommend setting aside for retirement. The first thing you should put money into is a matching retirement account. If you’ve got access to a 401(k) — and your employer offers a match — you should do that up to the match before anything else.

It’s nice if your company will match up to a certain point, but chances are that will still mean you’ve got some work to do. To make up the remainder, you could look at a Roth IRA. Then if the Roth, plus what you invested previously to get the match doesn’t equal 15 percent, you could see about a 403(b) or go back to your 401(k) to complete the 15 percent.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My mother wants everything, except for her home, left to my brother and I when she dies. She would like her long-time boyfriend to have her house. We don’t have a problem with this, but it has not been written into her will.

Her mind is still sound, so does she need to officially update the will?

DAWN DEAR DAWN, Yes, the will needs to be changed to reflect her wishes where the house is concerned. Since she’s still able to make decisions independently, the will should be legally updated to reflect exactly what she wants to have happen with every piece of her estate.

It’s fine if she wants to give her boyfriend the house. It’s your mom’s will, and her estate, so she can do pretty much whatever she wants. She could also leave what’s called a life estate that says her boyfriend gets use of the home while he’s alive. Technically, in this kind of situation the house would be left to you, but he would legally have use of it during his life. Upon his death, the home could then revert to you or your brother.
