Pointon believes the referendum has failed in the past for a variety of reasons, pointing out many voters may have confused the White Oak referendum with the Plainfield library referendum which is separate. Mayoral candidates share vision for village The Bugle emailed the candidates for Bolingbrook mayor five questions; setting a 500-word limit on their answers. The following are their emailed responses in their entirety. The Bugle emailed three questions to candidates for village clerk and trustee; setting a 300word limit on answers. Incumbent Roger Claar (BOLINGBROOK FIRST PARTY) WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR MAYOR AND WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS? I’m running to continue to serve in the position that I love. I love this village and I am very proud of the growth and development during the past 30 years. I am particularly pleases that Crain’s Chicago Business in February, and Chicago Magazine in March, named Bolingbrook as one of the top ten suburbs people should buy a home in.

My qualifications include 37 years of experience as a commissioner, trustee and mayor; overseeing Bolingbrook’s growth from 33,000 to 76,000 people. This community was 21 years old when I got involved and there was literally no infrastructure to provide for growth and development.

In addition to being involved in Bolingbrook’s governess, I also serve in numerous leadership positions in various local, state and national mayor’s organizations.

I have been overseeing over 300 employees and over $140 million budget for the last 30 years.

WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING BOLINGBROOK TODAY? With the exception of some of the planned roadwork for the far west end, virtually all the infrastructure to support a population of 88,000 is completed. The remaining important issues are the redevelopment of the property around I-55 and Route 53 intersection and the annexation and zoning of the few remaining vacant parcels. Acquiring Illinois American is a close second.

(widening and new bridge). This project initiated by Romeoville, Bolingbrook and the county continues to be delayed because of the inability of Springfield to adopt a budget. The continued delays are not only creating more traffic congestion, but is also costing millions of dollars in increased construction costs because of the delays. Area residents need to call our representatives in Springfield and turn up the heat to get this project underway.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE AND HOW, SPECIFICALLY, WILL YOU LEAD THE VILLAGE THERE? My vision, supported by the Bolingbrook First Party, for the future of this very diverse and vibrant community is to continue the growth and development that has been underway in the past.

That includes support for our schools (public and private), our diverse religious community and our housing stock and the continued growth in our commercial, business, and industrial base in the village.

My track record as mayor reflects that same plan and vision. If re-elected, I will continue to embrace the open, transparent government we have.

My experiences speak to this: I worked for the American Federation of Government Employees Union for the last 22 years, 20 of which as a labor organizer, because I firmly believe everyone has a voice and a right to be represented in their own community. I am currently serving my third term on Will County Board, this is my ninth year on the Board. WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING BOLINGBROOK TODAY? The most pressing issue facing our community is the massive debt Bolingbrook has incurred from overspending. This is especially concerning because ethics inquiries by the media have revealed Roger Claar receives millions of dollars in campaign contributions from Village contractors. I have little confidence this gravy train will ever end and we will be left holding the bill. As Mayor of Bolingbrook, I’ll bring back transparency and accountability. I want to work for the people and represent everyone in our great town and put an end to special interests and investments schemes that don’t serve our community at large.

WHAT ISSUE IS NOT GETTING ENOUGH ATTENTION? The fiscal state of Bolingbrook has been the central focus of our campaign because it’s the most important issue not getting attention. Claar is a 30-year standing mayor who has saddled our town with incredible debt. Moody’s cited the debt

Reports from the Chicago Tribune show that Roger has accepted around $2 million from Village contractors. These contractors were that same one who won approximately $300 million in contacts around Bolingbrook. That’s why I’m calling attention to Bolingbrook’s fiscal state, and running against the irresponsible spending and lack of transparency Roger has shown in his 30-year tenure.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE AND HOW, SPECIFICALLY, WILL YOU LEAD THE VILLAGE THERE? Like our government, I’ve seen that our community is stronger for its diversity. I’m committed to ensuring everyone in our community is represented and respected.

I see that our community’s values are not being represented, and I plan to change that by continuing the openness and honesty I’ve shown at Will County Board member, as mayor.

Not only is my campaign a campaign against the lack of transparency and against the corruption shown by Mayor Claar, but I have always been an advocate for those that need it most. I believe the people of Bolingbrook are tired of the lack of representation and lack of transparency in our town, and want to strive for a more inclusive, and financially secure future.

Recently I was on the Amita Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and the Bolingbrook Police Pension Board. I’m running because I’m concerned about our $300 million plus in debt with a deteriorating credit rating causing our interest levels on this debt to rise making it more difficult to to pay down or off.

the current group of trustees is just a rubber stamp for the Mayor, and have stopped representing ALL our residents effectively. My role on the board will be to represent and be the voice for our residents.

I decided to throw my hat into the ring because I love Bolingbrook, I didn’t like the direction in which it was headed, and I want to try to do something about it. I have served in various leadership roles in a variety of organizations, including president of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., West Suburban Chicago Chapter, and treasurer for the Bolingbrook Panthers Sports Club. I have written grants to fund the technology program at a local day care center, and I have been instrumental in starting scholarships for high school seniors. formation Security. The experience I have gained through these and many other activities and positions of leadership makes me uniquely qualified to serve as Trustee.

Deep State hasn’t gone away Point of democracy is to empower public interest, which means public must be aware

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY “In a statement to WikiLeaks, the source details policy questions that they say urgently need to be debated in public . . .”

Let me interrupt this quote from the world’s declassifier in chief, regarding its latest release of impertinent, humiliating and shocking data about the American security state, simply to absorb this statement of the obvious: There is an urgent need for public debate - ongoing public debate - not simply about this or that new revelation gifted to the world by an anonymous whistleblower, but about the very fact that “national security” is a game played in secret, against a mysterious, shape-shifting array of “adversaries.”

Does this game have anything at all to do with either the nation’s security or the safety and stability of the whole planet? Whose interests does it serve?

How does secrecy mesh with accountability?

The WikiLeaks statement, from a press release last week, goes on: “. . . including whether the CIA’s hacking capabilities exceed its mandated powers and the problem of public oversight of the agency.

The source wishes to initiate a public debate about the security, creation, use, proliferation and democratic control of cyberweapons.”

The essence of this latest leak is that the CIA has a “malware arsenal” that allows it, as the Washington Post reports, “to steal data from iPhones, seize control of Microsoft-powered computers or even make internet-connected Samsung television sets secretly function as microphones.”

And this creates “a breach that is likely to cause immediate damage to the CIA’s efforts to gather intelligence overseas and place new strain on the U.S. government’s relationship with Silicon Valley giants, including Apple and Google.”

The problem with the stories I’ve read thus far on this latest leak is the same problem I see in most mainstream reporting about U.S. military and security operations: a virtually total lack of context, combined with

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY vague and evasive terminology and a quietly lurking, unquestioned sense of moral superiority in relation to the rest of the world. The institutions of American dominance mostly get a free pass from the media to do what they do, and their annual budgets never provoke the question “Where will the money come from?”

This is what former Republican congressional aide Mike Lofgren has called the Deep State, a term describing a private-public governing consensus on war, on money - that is beyond the reach of democracy and not subject to public debate . . . unless a whistleblower somewhere, in collusion with WikiLeaks or a journalist, releases data that makes a debate unavoidable.

Fascinatingly, this concept, or a trivialized version thereof, is all over the media right now, thanks to Donald Trump and his acolytes, such as Iowa Republican Congressman Steve King, who just generated a surge of controversy over his idiotic tweet, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

But America’s troubles aren’t limited to dark-skinned foreigners and their offspring. King also recently discussed another bogeyman Trump is in the process of confronting: “We are talking about the emergence of a Deep State led by Barack Obama, and that is something we should prevent,” he said. “The person who understands this best is Steve Bannon, and I would think that he’s advocating to make some moves to fix it.”

And suddenly the Deep State is reduced to a conspiracy theory: a farright joke in a tinfoil hat, to be dismissed with utter contempt.

For instance: “The problem in Washington is not a Deep State; the problem is a shallow man - an untruthful, vain, vindictive, alarmingly erratic president,” New Yorker editor David Remnick tells us, proclaiming in no uncertain terms: “There is no Deep State.”

And there you have it. Remnick’s certainty allows Liberal America to devote all its attention to opposing

Trump. Oh, if only he were right! If only we lived in such a country, which has made only this one mistake, of quasielecting a lying, tweeting billionaire to its highest office, but otherwise has waged its wars and conducted its surveillance and made its money and forged its global dominance with integrity.

Lofgren himself, in a recent interview with Nafeez Ahmed, described the Deep State with far more complexity: not as the clearly defined, imaginary entity that both Remnick and King reduced it to, but rather as an organic, fluctuating convergence of powerful interests, including Trump’s.

“It’s a series of coalitions of people and it’s not a conspiracy. . . . It’s a series of interlocking interest groups who coalesce the same way people with power, money and influence always gravitate to one another. Adam Smith said 225 years ago or more that there’s never a meeting among businessmen, a private meeting that takes place, but that sooner or later they get involved in some conspiracy against the public interest.”

The ever-forming Deep State, in other words, is a natural phenomenon, held in place not by some secret dictator’s orders but by common interests, which generate groupthink.

Those who benefit from it, even minimally, rarely question it, no matter what course of action it pursues.

“The Deep State,” Ahmed wrote, “is the overarching structure that overrides democratic process to determine policies, meaning that the two-party system offers little meaningful change of course from administration to administration.”

The whole point of a democracy is to empower the public interest, which means that the public must be aware of the Deep State and hold it continually accountable.

While Lofgren is adamant that there’s more to it than the military-industrial consensus and the pursuit of endless war, this to me is by far its most troubling aspect.

Let’s not give it any peace.

Benet’s Katie Jaseckas is 2017 Voyager Media Girls Basketball Player of the Year

During Benet Academy’s back-to-back state title runs in 2015 and 2016, much of the attention was givn to the guard play on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

With guards like Kathleen Doyle leading the way, Benet was known its full court press as well as ability to shoot from the perimeter.

One of the biggest reasons the Redwings had that luxury was the play of Katie Jaseckas.

Jaseckas, the 6-foot, 1-inch, Truman State-bound center, leaves the program as its all-time leader in rebounds (741) and second in blocked shots (209).

It was that play that allows the guards to shoot threes, knowing Jaseckas would be there for the rebound and apply pressure knowing if a team beat the press,

they had her guarding the rim.

“Katie has been the backstop behind the Redwings full court press for the past three seasons,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride. “She is one of the best shot blockers and rebounders in the school’s history and has been the starting center for Benet teams that have compiled a 94-11 record in her three full seasons on varsity.”

This season, Jaseckas averaged 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.9 steals per game and led Benet to a 28-5 record and a sectional title. For those accomplishments, she has been named the 2017 Voyager Media girls basketball Player of the Year.

With talent surrounding her all three years of her career, Jaseckas knew she didn’t have to bear the entire load. But when the playoffs came, she wanted to.

“In the playoffs, I knew I didn’t want to go home,” she said. “I knew I had to do whatever it took. All year, we always knew someone would pick up the slack. If I wasn’t having a good game, I would just do the dirty work like get a rebound and pass the ball to whoever was hot.”

She said that while the championships were a great bonus, he time at Benet was not all about the wins.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more amazing than the teams I have had and the ride that I had at Benet,” Jaseckas said. “Coach Kilbride made it a phenomenal program. I just love spending time with my team. Winning state two years in a row and this year we won the sectional and had so much fun.

This year after we lost, on the ride home, we cried and then we had a dance party on the bus because it was our last time together.”

Other members of the Voyager Media All-Area first team are:

BROOKLYN BACHMANN MINOOKA

Senior averaged an area-best 20.9 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds.

She ended her career as the all-time leader in points in school history with 1,523.

Was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA allstate honorable mention. She will attend Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

SAM GALANOPOULOS NILES WEST

Sophomore was the starting point guard for the Wolves. She averaged 17.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 3.3 assists per game. She scored more than 30 points in a game 3 times this season. She made the Central Suburban South All Conference team and was also on the York Thanksgiving and Nazareth Holiday All-Tournament teams.

“Sam had a wonderful season for us but the best is yet to come from this sophomore,” Niles West coach Tony Konsewicz said.

OLIVIA JENKINS PLAINFIELD EAST

Junior averaged 12.79 points and 7.18 rebounds per game this season.

She was named to the Marist Thanksgiving All-Tournament team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA honorable mention all-state.

Lewis softball earns sweep over Maryville The Lewis University softball team displayed its offensive prowess as the Flyers rapped out 28 hits on their way to the 9-6, 10-8 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over Maryville University at the Lewis Softball Field on Saturday (March 25).

With the sweep, Lewis is now 18-9 overall and 6-2 in GLVC play while the Saints drop to 14-14 on the campaign and 4-4 in conference action.

Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (March 28), as the Flyers head to Michigan for a 3 PM ET doubleheader with Grand Valley State.

In game one, Lewis scored seven runs in the third inning highlighted by a Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) grand slam - and never looked back in the 9-6 win.

Sanders (13-1) picked up the complete-game win for the Flyers, as she allowed six runs and 12 hits, while fanning six batters.

Her boyfriend graduated, too, and he has over $100,000 in student loan debt. They want to get married, so she’s looking for a job. He wants to go to graduate school, and take out more loans to remain a full-time student. The idea of even more debt hanging over their heads really bothers her. Do you have any advice?

DENISE DEAR DENISE, You don’t throw away a great, potentially lifelong, relationship just because of debt. Things like laziness, dishonesty, and irresponsible behavior are deal breakers, though.

Those are flaws that usually don’t go away. I’m glad she’s looking for a job, but her boyfriend needs to be working, too. There’s no excuse for either of them being full-time students with more than $120,000 in combined student loan debt hanging over their heads. Lots of people hold down real jobs, save money, and further their educations on a part-time basis.
