Commuters will soon have a chance to take advantage of an extra run on Metra’s Heritage Corridor Line. Metra and Congressman Dan Lipinski recently announced that a new mid-afternoon departure from Chicago will be added to the line, beginning March 14.

Local leaders have been pushing for a better commute for area Metra passengers for years, including additional stops and morning and evening rush-hour routes to keep pace with Will County’s tremendous

growth in population. The 2:45 p.m. departure from Union Station will expand weekday service on the line from six to seven trains, including three inbound in the morning and four outbound in the afternoon/ evening, giving downtown commuters more options for travel.

The train will make stops at Summit, Willow Springs, Lemont and Lockport before arriving at its final destination at 4 p.m. in Joliet.

“We are glad to hear about the expanded service on this line, as this will benefit the Romeoville station, which is intended to break ground this October,” said Mayor John Noak.

Romeoville’s new station, servicing Romeoville and surrounding Will County communities will be located on 135th Street on the Citgo Refinery property with a parking lot for 600.

The initiative for the new station began in 2008 when one of Romeoville’s largest industrial residents, Citgo Petroleum Company, was about to expand and build a new plant, and the village and the company struck a deal.

In exchange for variances that allowed for an additional parking lot to be constructed across from the plant on 135th Street, Citgo offered to lease eight acres of land to the village for a long-sought Metra station. Construction on the new station is expected to begin this fall.

New grant to help immigrant families District to receive renewable federal grant to help provide services, counseling

With students from nearly 60 different countries, the Valley View School District is working to ensure immigrant families are assimilating properly.

The school district will be awarded a renewable federal grant to help provide services and counseling for immigrant families facing new challenges.

“I believe this program will significantly increase the quality of service for those with an immigrant background, said Ricardo Sanchez, director of the ELL/Bilingual Department. “I can speak from personal experience what a wonderful experience it is to immigrate to this country. But it can also be full of challenges.

We need to acknowledge it is even more difficult to adapt to a new culture. Families may not know the culture or be familiar with

regulations and laws; they may know in their own country, but not here.”

Sanchez explained that evidence shows that children from those families struggle initially when coming to Valley View, especially in learning a new language in addition to learning the curriculum taking place in their schools.

The bulk of foreign-born students hail from Mexico and in the past year the district has seen an increase in students from Asia, Pakistan, Philippines and India.

The Immigrant Education Program grant, sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education, will identify immigrant families at time of enrollment and share information about community resources, health, housing and counseling.

“We want to be able to offer services that they may not be aware of,” said Sanchez.

The district will schedule faceto-face follow up meetings for 12 weeks to check in with families who may find it cumbersome to navigate the system and will monitor how those students adjust to a new school.

Ten school interpreters on staff have already stepped up to volunteer their time to help with the program.

Voters headed to the polls March 15 will choose their party’s candidates in county, state and federal races, as well as answer a referendum that would help the White Oak Library District increase services.

The library district is looking to increase its annual operating fund by adjusting its limiting rate, essentially increasing the tax rate from 0.1995 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 23 cents.

This means property taxes would increase by $10.17 per year, per $100,000 of home value. According to White Oak, the average home in the district would see an increase of $16 to $17 per year.

The district intends to use the new operating funds to increase all of its library services, with a focus on an increase in hours of operation and outreach efforts for seniors, children and underserved residents. In addition, it would like to create a digital media lab similar to those offered at the Fountaindale and Joliet library districts.

Several Will County races are up, as well, including Circuit Clerk. In the Democratic race, Andrea Lynn Chasteen will face off against Robert Enright. Republican candidate Marlene Carlson is unopposed.

Recorder of Deeds incumbent Karen Stukel will compete with Republican Kristin Cross and

County Auditor Kevin Blackburn will face off with Republican Gary Good in November.

Republican Laurie McPhillips will challenge County Chief Executive Officer Larry Walsh in November, as well. Both are running unopposed in the March primary.

County Board District 3 will see Democrats Elizabeth Rice and Donald Moran face off and Republicans Raquel Mitchell and S. James Boudouris. County Board District 4 will see Jacqueline Traynere and Kenneth Harris compete for the Democrat seat.

Congressman Dan Lipinski of the 3rd Congressional District is running unopposed, as are Democrat state Sen. Pat McGuire in the 43rd Legislative District, state Rep. Natalie Manley in the 98th District and state Rep. Emily McCasey in the 85th District.

While U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-11th, is running unopposed in the primary, three Republican candidates are vying for the chance to challenge the Democratic incumbent in November’s general election. Candidates include Tonia Khouri, Herman B. White and Nick Stella.

Both candidates for the 49th Legislative District are running unopposed in the primary. State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant will face off with Republican candidate Michelle Smith in November.

I was beaming with excitement one afternoon in spring 2010, during one of my journalism classes at Roosevelt University. We were studying how to use new media and technology within our field, when a nearby classmate, who was not diagnosed with a disability, made a comment that hit me like a brick.

“Why is this technology so retarded,” the classmate said, without knowing who might be affected by this word.

The classmate had no idea that the use of the “r-word,” even as it was not directed towards me, still hurt.

“Using the r-word against us athletes hurts us because most people don’t think before they actually say the words,” said Georgia Hunter, my friend and fellow athlete and Global Messenger in Special Olympics Illinois.

Georgia has been diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Today, March 2, thousands of people across the country are spreading awareness in the eighth annual Spread the Word to End the Word campaign.

For those of us with special needs, as well as for our family and friends, the word “retard(ed),” or the “r-word” as it is referred to in the campaign, is extremely offensive – even when the word is not directed toward us. If someone, like my former classmate, uses the “r-word” about an inanimate object to mean that the object is slow, this connotes a similar meaning that

those of us with special needs might learn or act a little slower than others.

Thus, there is a negative tone to the use of the “r-word.”

“The cool thing about Spread the Word to End the Word is that there are thousands of events across the country, and everyone kind of goes about it a bit differently,” said Tim Shriver Jr., cofounder of the campaign. “Every event has a pledge banner where people sign their name and take the pledge to not only stop using the ‘r-word’ [themselves] but to speak up when others use it.”

People can join more than 585,197 other online pledges by signing the pledge electronically and learning more about Spread the Word to End the Word at www.r-word.org.

When I was delivered three-and-athird months premature 27 years ago, people commonly used the “r-word” as an acceptable term to describe people with visible and invisible intellectual disabilities. Fast forward to present day, medical professionals are becoming more understanding and respectful with their word choice.

Take my sister, Stefanie Smrokowski, 25, for example. She is a doctor of physical therapy and has grown up with an older brother who has special needs. She feels encouraged about the declining use of the “r-word” among medical professionals.

“It’s becoming very common

knowledge that you should not use that word,” Stefanie said, adding that she rarely hears the word, especially among younger physical therapists. “There are still some people that maybe aren’t as aware of that, but I think in general we’re all going towards that being common sense to not use that word.”

My friend Tim Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics Inc., said that trend is encouraging.

“Your sister’s quotes give us all confidence that we can win the battle against humiliation and play unified to teach respect the world over,” he wrote in an email regarding a previous Special Voices column.

Despite the cognitive struggles that myself and others with intellectual disabilities face on a daily basis, we overcome our challenges by celebrating the abilities that we do have.

Last summer, I was a leading journalist producing the No. 1 update podcast at the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015.

Earlier last year, I was among 10 other advocates named a national finalist for the American Association of People with Disabilities 2015 Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award. In 2012, I received the Les Brownlee Scholarship from the Chicago Headline Club, as well as the Matthew Freeman Award for Social Justice from Roosevelt University, and a Bachelor of Arts in journalism.

Heroes among children I am continually amazed at the strength, character and integrity of our kids. These kids demonstrate to me how secure our future is.

As a volunteer tutor each Wednesday at my church, New Life in Bolingbrook, these kids illustrate in their attitude and behavior the path our country is in.

They are our future. Our School District Valley View 365-U superintendent, teachers, aides, etc., should all be as proud of these kids as I am.

On Wednesday when my student Caitlyn and I finish her homework, I

always ask “what did you do at school today for fun and helpful to someone else?”

She told me “kids jump rope” for all children and adults with heart defects. The monies donated go back into this very worthy fundraiser.

Caitlyn knew how many chambers are in a heart, how big your heart is and much more.

There are heroes among adults – but there are also heroes among children.

These kids inspire me every day. I am the adult, but they demonstrate in their pure and young honest self, what great kids we have in our great country.

Character of children is promoted by their education – from parents,

surrounding family, teachers, friends, school and home. The good these kids demonstrate should be applauded.

As an adult, I see courage and inspiration shining brightly. They do protect the future. When told to sit down, these kids “boldly” stand up and say “yes” teacher, I will volunteer for kids and adults with heart defects. Do we, as adults do the same?

It is not important, what we have, but what we do. This attitude is displayed every day by our kids. This true story is a tribute to Caitlyn and all kids. They carry the torch into the future.

Carillon prepares for spring tornado season Risk for tornado activity highest in May, June On Aug. 28, 1990, one of the most severe tornadoes in Illinois history went through Plainfield causing more than $140 million of damage in surrounding areas.

As recorded by the U.S. Weather Service, May through June are the most prevalent months for tornado activity in Plainfield, even though the area’s potential risk factor is rated relatively low.

In late 2015, a new Federal Signal Corporation 508 weather alarm was installed in Carillon that will improve early warning of pending weather dangers for its residents. It generates a high

decibel level in a 500 Hz tone for significant improvement over the earlier alert system.

The new siren can better be heard both inside and outside residences throughout the community because the lower audible frequency is more easily detected by the human ear. This alarm signal can travel a full mile and benefit some of the neighboring communities. The siren will activate through direct tie into the Romeoville municipal emergency warning system.

The homeowners association Carillon Adult Master Association

- worked diligently to prepare for the upcoming 2016 spring season.

Realizing potential dangers and the need to keep its residents safe, CAMA began a study of their audible early warning alert system in late 2014. Extensive studies were completed for potential equipment improvements, optimum siren locations, budgetary considerations, and most importantly improvement in resident safety.

An expenditure was approved in 2015 by the CAMA Board to pay $35,500 for a new state-of-the-art early warning system. The system was completely installed and then tested successfully in February 2016.

Despite the fact that the document was written well over 200 years ago, the Bill of Rights still remains a key factor in the lives of all Americans.

That’s what Cook County assistant public defender Chandra Smith told Portia Worthy’s American Government classes at Bolingbrook High School Feb. 25,

as they concluded their study of the constitutional rights afforded to all U.S. citizens.

Smith, who lives in Bolingbrook, explained various rights but spent most of her time talking about a citizen’s right to due process, as well as the moral dilemmas that often present themselves in unfortunate situations.

“I hope that none of you are ever arrested,” she said. “But if you are, the street is not the place to fight. The courtroom is where you should fight. It doesn’t help for you to say ‘you can’t do this to me. Why are you doing this?’ You may be right but the street is not the place to prove it. You have a better chance once you get to court.”

Smith detailed the entire legal process, including the differences between a misdemeanor and a felony (“felonies can and will ruin your life….they stay with you forever”), an individual’s rights in an interrogation situation (“the only thing you should do is request an attorney”), and sentencing (“prison is not a pretty place. It’s cold. It’s dingy. It has a horrendous smell. It’s not a good place to go”).

As part of the classroom exercise following Smith’s presentation, students were asked to turn in papers described how the Bill of Rights impacts their own lives.

A CAREER Spartans’ Cappelletti gets a win over Plainfield S. on senior night

On paper, there wasn’t much to play for in the regular season finale between Plainfield South and Romeovillle Feb. 23 in Romeoville.

Both teams were out of the Southwest Prairie Conference race and their seeds were already clinched before the game took place.

However, that didn’t keep both teams from fighting hard, and, in the end, Romeoville rallied for the 53-48 win.

“We stuck together as a team and stuck to the gameplan,” Romeoville forward Matt Cappelletti said. “I was so happy I got the win on senior night. I’m the only senior, so it was pretty much my night. We played good as a team and I think everyone is happy with the way we played.”

“It is kind of nice. We don’t have to get them fired up to get going,” South coach Tim Boe

said. “They feed off each other, they show up every day to play hard in practice. The games have been easy to get up and get going.

It was a conference opponent, it was Romeoville. There is a lot of pride in that locker room and they come out ready to play.”

The game offered extra incentive for a couple of reasons.

One was the team wanted to win for Cappelletti, who scored 18 points to lead the Spartans.

“It definitely meant more to me since it was my last home game,” Cappelletti said. “It was bittersweet, but it definitely feels good to walk away with a win.

These guys knew I wanted it bad and it was my last time playing here. They were being unselfish and moving the ball around. It was fun to see.”

The Spartans had also lost to the Cougars earlier in the year and had not beaten them at home the past few years, making the win even more important.

Flyers win 3rd straight GLVC Indoor track title Stennis, Miranda tabbedGLVC indoor track athletes of the year The No. 4 Lewis University women’s track and field team earned its third-consecutive GLVC Indoor Championship, as the Flyers won eight events and set nine NCAA Provisional marks at UW-Parkside’s Frank Petretti Fieldhouse on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon.

“We took the momentum from last night and never looked back,” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “This group was hungry and proved that they are one of the best GLVC teams of all time.”

Lewis finished with 186.5 points, while second-place finisher Indianapolis collected 91 points.

Following the meet, Lewis seniors Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and Amber Cook (Grayslake, Ill./ Warren Township) were named the GLVC Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Lewis freshman Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./Romeoville) earned GLVC Freshman of the Year, while Schwarting was tabbed the GLVC Coach of the Year.

Stennis won both the 200-meter dash (24.54) and 400-meter dash (55.69) events with NCAA Provisional times.

Cook won all three jump events over the weekend, including her win in the long jump on Saturday night. She won the high jump with a NCAA Provisional mark of of 5’5 1/4” (1.66m). Flyer sophomore Eva Poznanski (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Wheeling) was third in the event with the same NCAA Provisional height as Cook, but with two more attempts.

Cook also captured the triple jump championship with a firstplace and NCAA Provisional leap of 40’4 1/4” (12.30m). Pulliam finished second in the event with a NCAA Provisional jump of 39’6 1/2”, while sophomore Mercedes Porter (Rantoul, Ill./Rantoul) took home the bronze with a mark of 37’6 1/2” (11.44m).

Pulliam went on to win the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.21, while classmate Lane Kadlec (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was second in the shot put with a NCAA Provisional toss of 46’2 1/2” (14.08m) Lewis sophomore Zoe Mead

Stennis and Mead paired up with junior Cortney Cross and sophomore Taylor Jones (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) to win the 4x400 relay (3:56.15).

• The No. 19 Lewis University men’s track and field team picked up four titles and seven NCAA Provisional marks to rally for their third-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Championship at UW-Parkside’s Frank Petretti Fieldhouse on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon.

Lewis finished with 152.50 points to win the title, while their nearest competitor, Indianapolis was second with 131 points.

Following the meet, Lewis junior Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) was named the GLVC Track Athlete of the Year, while head coach Dana Schwarting was selected as the GLVC Coach of the Year.

The Flyers went one/two in the 800-meter run as Miranda set a conference record and NCAA Provisional time of 1:51.07.

Senior Matt Jemilo (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) added another national mark, finishing second in the event with a time of 1:53.05.

Barnes, Miranda, Jemilo and Wilson went on to capture the 4x400 relay title with a NCAA Provisional mark of 3:15.70.

The Flyers dominated the heptathlon as they claimed first through fourth place, including three NCAA Provisional showings. Lewis senior Dan Lentz (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) won the event with a NCAA Provisional mark of 4,761, followed by two more national marks of 4,748 points from sophomore Bryce Holesinger (Fulton, Ill./ Fulton) and 4,644 from senior Jared Harkness (Elmwood, Ill./ Elmwood). Lewis men make GLVC quarterfinals Flyers defeat UIS 80-76 to advance to quarters for 10th consecutive season The Lewis University men’s basketball team can still lay claim to being the only team to make the Great Lakes Valley Conference Quarterfinals in each of the last 10 years, as the Flyers picked up the 80-76 victory over Illinois Springfield in a GLVC First Round showdown at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon.

Lewis senior forward Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) recorded a teambest 23 points with a career-

best 11 baskets along with six rebounds, while junior Capel Henshaw (Harrisburg, Ill./ Harrisburg) set a career-high with 19 points and tied a careerhigh with five three-pointers.

Freshman guard Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./ Godwin Heights) had 17 points, including four three-pointers, along with five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, while junior guard Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) posted 10 points and a team-best

four assists.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 21-8, while the Prairie Stars end the season with a record of 11-18. Lewis will now play the University of Indianapolis in the GLVC Quarterfinals on Friday (March 4) for the secondstraight year at Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Tip-off time has yet to be determined.

UIS senior guard Jamall Millison led four Prairie Star players with a game-high 27 points, including four threepointers, and nine rebounds.

UIS senior guard JJ Cravatta and junior forward Paxton Harmon both hit three trifectas and

finished with 13 points, while freshman center Zach Steinbert finished with 10 points and nine boards.

As a team, Lewis shot over 50.0% for the sixth-straight game, converting 50.8% (30-for59) of their attempts and 47.8% (11-for-23) of their three-point attempts. UIS kept itself in the contest with the three-point shot with 15 trifectas.

Steinberg hit the final threepointer of the game for UIS with 54 seconds remaining to cut Lewis’ lead to 77-74. Simelton missed a jumper on the ensuing possession and UIS freshman Logan Gonce (6 points, 6 assists)

grabbed the defensive rebound with 31 seconds remaining.

The Prairie Stars had two more chances to tie the game, but Millison’s final three-point attempt went array and Henshaw collected the rebound with 13 seconds left. Henshaw drained both of his free throw attempts to extend Lewis’ lead to 79-74 and put the game away for good.

“UIS is never out of it,” Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “They have some guys that can really, really shoot and they hit some tough shots today.

“Overall I’m happy to win at this time of year and move on.”

I think they had three key rebounds and they scored on all three of them. Robert Johnson of Romeoville made some big plays for them. We rebounded well all game until the last four minutes of the fourth quarter.”

The Spartans grabbed a 46-42 advantage in the fourth, but the Cougars came back to tie it up.

That is when Cappelletti hit a three-pointer on one end and blocked a shot on the other end to help the Spartans clinch the game.

“That felt good,” Cappelletti said of the three-pointer. “I got enough room and I felt comfortable with my rhythm and luckily it fell.”

Also costly for the Cougars in the fourth quarter were some missed looks at the rim, which resulted in fast breaks for the Spartans.

“We were pretty in sync with each other, we executed well and were patient when we had to be patient,” Boe said. “I was proud of the way we were playing.

There were a couple possessions where we missed a layup and they made a layup and that was a four-point swing. Those two swings and Robert Johnson’s rebounds made the difference in the game tonight.”

Jacob Bucher scored 26 points to lead the Cougars.

Approximately 170,000 vehicles travel the Stevenson Expressway between Interstate 355 and Interstate 90/94 each day. Last month, state officials introduced a plan to alleviate congestion along this busy 25-mile stretch of highway.

The I-55 managed lanes project would add at least one lane in each direction between the Veterans Memorial Tollway and the Dan Ryan Expressway, according to Illinois Department of

Transportation. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner announced in February that legislative leaders introduced a legislative resolution that would give IDOT the go ahead to explore adding managed lanes to I-55 under a private-public partnership.

“By using existing resources to leverage private investment, we can build the type of infrastructure that allows Illinois to better compete in the 21st century,” Rauner said in a release announcing the resolution.

His office added that the partnership between public and private interests would lower the cost of the project and shorten its

timeline.

“This is an innovative project that will create jobs, improve the region’s quality of life and show that Illinois is open for business,” Rauner added.

Will and DuPage county residents are among the thousands of commuters who travel this stretch of the Stevenson, which officials said experiences frequent congestion and unreliable travel times.

One of those commuters, House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, said this proposal helps IDOT keep the I-55 Congestion Relief Project moving forward by seeking out

private funds.

“Regardlessofthetimeofday,there is congestion along the Stevenson Expressway,” Durkin said. “Not only is it a source of regular frustration for drivers, including myself, it can be a dangerous situation for both motorist and passengers.”

Options currently being explored include the possible addition of tolled and untolled carpool lanes, as well as express tolling lanes. The governor’s office said Illinois would complete federal environmental studies later this year, which will help identify a preferred option.
