Voters shot down a referendum for the White Oak Library District with the majority, nearly 67 percent of the vote, rejecting a move by the district to increase its annual operating fund.

In order to increase library services, the district attempted to boost its annual operating budget by adjusting its limiting rate, essentially increasing property taxes $10.17 per year, per $100,000 of home value.

“It’s a puzzle for sure,” said Executive Director Scott Pointon.

“In the opinion of myself and about 90 percent of the residents I spoke with over the past month, we were asking for very little in the grand scheme of things. Yet the votes came in 2 to 1 against the proposal.”

The district had campaigned that the success of the library warranted the increase, as there has been a 7.8 percent increase in the library district’s usage. The extra funds would have gone

to support expanded service hours, media lab and outreach efforts for seniors, children and underserved residents.

Pointon said the board of directors will have to consider a number of questions before deciding a new course of action including whether or not the negative votes were based on a dislike for what the district was proposing to do with the new funds or just a kneejerk reaction to any proposed new tax, regardless of the small size or relative worth of that proposed increase?

In addition, Pointon said the directors have to ask, “Do the voters not value library services enough to consider a minor tax increase? Did voters punish the taxing body that takes 2 to 3 percent of their tax bill, simply because they are fed up with the amount that is taken by the taxing bodies responsible for the other 97 percent of their tax bill?”

The library district last placed a referendum on the ballot in 2010 – a building bond referendum that allowed it to completely gut and renovate the Romeoville and Lockport branch libraries and build a new Crest Hill branch library.

Nearby, the Plainfield Public Library District also went out for referendum with similar results; voters rejected their proposition by nearly 70 percent.

One-year-wonder continues roll out Bolingbrook’s Illinois Aviation Museum launched the project last year By laura katauskas

In a quest to build an airplane, the “One Year Wonder” is a project that is literally taking shape.

Looking to both engage aviation enthusiasts as well as connect with the community, Bolingbrook’s Illinois Aviation Museum launched the project last year at Bolingbrook’s Clow International Airport.

Engaging more than 400 people since then, young and old, everyone has a hand in the construction of a Zenith Aircraft CH 750 Cruzer.

The project is expected to cost more than $40,000 to complete and a recent donation is helping continue the process.

Ben Seidel, CEO of Midwest Fuel Injection announced his commitment to the project at the “State of the Village” address and recently presented the museum with a $5,000 donation March 10.

“The sponsorship will help us reach our goal,” said Larry Greenwich, president of the Illinois Aviation Museum. “We are constantly looking for sources of revenue, as this is not our only project.

We recently built two new viewing stands for the restored jets outside of the museum and the cost of wood is not cheap.”

Greenwich said the plane build is coming along on schedule with build sessions being promoted on facebook for dates and times. Building sessions are being held on Saturdays until the project is complete.

Participants of the project have the opportunity to engage in all facets of building an experimental

kit aircraft. The project covers a vast variety of elements of aviation including learning safety around aircraft, aircraft parts and aircraft construction tools; the basics of aerodynamics, the major parts of an airplane and what makes an airplane fly.

In addition, participants will learn to read and interpret aircraft plans and drawings; engage in the fabrication and construction of aircraft components; help to keep building records to satisfy aviation regulators and authorities; all while developing problem solving and leadership skills.

The project was inspired after a similar project launched, the “One Week Wonder,” in OshKosh, Wis. last summer at the annual AirVenture convention, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).

The group expects to have the plane ready by summer 2017 to make the flight to the annual EAA convention in Oshkosh.

The museum’s mission is centered around the fact that the future of aviation lies in the youth and is committed to educate, preserve and promote aviation through community involvement, with projects such as these.

“After the A4-C roll out last October and the completion of the new runway at Clow, and looking forward to this year’s Cavalcade of planes, we are on a roll with projects,” said Greenwich.

The Illinois Aviation Museum at Bolingbrook is a consortium of individuals and groups dedicated to advancing aviation and engineering. It operates out of Hangar One, a 6,000 square-foot-facility at Bolingbrook’s Clow International Airport.

For the first time in the Romeoville school’s history, the St. Andrew the Apostle basketball team came home with two titles: 2015/2016 South Suburban Catholic Boys Conference Champions and eighth grade Boys Division Basketball Title Champions. It was the first time both trophies were ever won at the same time.

St. Andrew took on St. Cyril of Lemont March 6 at St. Paul the Apostle School in Joliet for the final game, winning the game 37 to 19.

‘Divergent’ author to Martinez Free Latino Community 8th graders: ‘Don’t give up’ Fair to be held March 31 at Bolingbrook HS

Veronica Roth visited Middle School eighth graders March 17 Don’t give up. That’s the message New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth brought to A. Vito Martinez Middle School eighth graders March 17.

“A lot of times you will fail,” said Roth. “What’s important is to remember your worth isn’t damaged just because you try something and fail.”

The author best known for her Divergent trilogy of science fiction novels, consisting of Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant; and Four: A Divergent Collection, told of how she tried many things during her youth including ballet, gymnastics, violin, flute, cross country, track, volleyball and debate, all of which she failed at.

“I was pretty good at writing from an early age. But I wasn’t always good at it,” Roth said. “But I didn’t give up on writing.”

Northwestern University studying creative writing, she wrote Divergent over winter break and took her manuscript to a writers conference.

The book was sold the following month to HarperCollins and it debuted at number six on the New York Times best-seller list. Her next book, Insurgent, was number one on that list. And when Allegiant came out a year later, it became the most pre-ordered book ever issued

by HarperCollins.

The trilogy was a huge commercial success, with more than 30 million copies sold by 2015.

A film adaptation of her first book, also titled Divergent, was released in 2014. A box office success, it led to the sequels Insurgent (2015) and The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016).

“Writing is an act of humility,” she told students. “You have to see what you did wrong and you have to come up with a plan to do it right.

That’s a life skill.”

New addition to PE curriculum brings roller skating to Martinez Martinez students just completed a unique two weeks in the Romeoville middle school’s physical education curriculum… roller skating.

“We wanted to give the kids an opportunity to try an activity where they can do something many of them have never done before,” said PE Key leader Chris McVey. “We wanted the kids to be open minded and try something different.”

Roller skating on the Martinez gym floor is certainly something different. But Keller Skating had no problem providing gym floorfriendly roller skates as well instructions on how to safely navigate the class. The Geneseobased company also made sure mats were available in one corner of the gym for beginners who were afraid they might fall.

Student nominated as delegate to Science and Technology Congress BHS freshman Emma Fagust joins Future Science and Technology Leaders

Bolingbrook High School freshman Emma Fagust has been named a Delegate for the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders which will be held in Lowell, Massachusetts, June 29 to July 1.

The Congress is an honorsonly program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The event is designed to help top students in the country with aspirations to be scientists and technologists.

Fagust was nominated based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology. She will join students from across the country at the Congress in listening to scientific research

presentations by Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners. She will also hear from deans of the world’s top tech universities, be inspired by fellow teen science prodigies, and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future of science and technology.

“as a former MaP recipient,... my patience with Springfield and the politicians we’ve sent there has worn thin.”

Another avalanche of statements from Illinois legislators and Gov. Rauner were sent out last week – each assigning blame for the state budget standoff to the other side and ridding themselves of responsibility for a financial fiasco that’s receiving national ridicule.

The issue prompting this wave of rhetoric was the passage of Senate Bill 2059 – an appropriations bill that would authorize payments for mental health and social services, as well as higher education, during the ongoing budget B.S. Senate Democrats say the bill, which appropriates up to $3.9 billion for social services and higher education spending, was inspired by recent testimony from Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger during a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Prior to this, the Republican governor and Democratic legislators waged a similar war of words over a failed attempt earlier this month to override Rauner’s veto of SB 2043, which would fund MAP grants for the 2015-16 academic year and include money for community colleges and career-technical and adult education.

“We applaud House Republicans and Representative Drury for standing up for taxpayers today,” Rauner’s press secretary, Catherine Kelly, said in a statement following the failed override attempt. “Despite the governor’s request that the General Assembly not waste time with a political vote that was never going to pass, the legislature is poised to leave students, universities and community colleges in the lurch for at least a month.”

Fast forward a couple weeks, and State Sen. Pat McGuire was one member of the general assembly who kicked off the next round of political press releases, after the Senate approved SB 2059.

The Will County Democrat said the bill allows Rauner to fund programs and services not covered by the court orders and consent decrees that are propelling 90 percent of state spending.

“It supports the drug, mental health and veterans courts, which are more effective than imprisonment,” McGuire said. “And it signals to students awaiting MAP grants that the state plans to honor its obligation to them.”

This lack of funding for the Monetary Award Program was the focus of Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant’s statement on SB 2059, as well. The Shorewood

senator said the vote gives the governor the authority to authorize funds for MAP grants, community colleges and Illinois’ nine public universities.

“Though I am frustrated that the governor has been unwilling to fund higher education, I intend to continue supporting legislation that gives him an opportunity to honor the state’s commitment to students needing aid for college and demonstrate that higher education is a priority,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

The impact on higher education is particularly important, as MAP provides close to $5,000 in financial aid for about 150,000 low-income students each year. Many MAP recipients depend on the grant to reduce the financial burden of attending college, and all 57 of the state’s community colleges and public universities are equally affected by the program’s lack of funding.

Meanwhile, Rauner and his allies in the state legislature called SB 2059 nothing more than a way for Democrats to save face, adding that it wouldn’t fund the programs it identifies without adding to the state’s debt.

“Senate Democrats today admitted that this bill would do nothing to help higher education, MAP students or social services because there is no money to pay for it,” Kelly said in an email aimed at shifting the blame away from the governor and on to the bill’s supporters. “Rather than adding billions to our debt and risk further delaying payments to social service providers, the General Assembly needs to stay in Springfield and negotiate a balanced budget alongside structural reforms that create jobs and grow our economy.”

If you’re like me, the soundbytes and “official” statements from elected officials about the budget impasse and its effects on higher education funding are farcical – filled with grandiose language that says more about Springfield’s lack of accountability than the students who are being used as political bargaining chips.

And, if you share my frustrations, let me help sum up your thoughts on the war of words to this point in time, “So, what?”

So, what does this mean for the thousands of Illinois college students

who are waiting to know if they will be able to attend school next semester? So, what does this mean for Illinois colleges and universities that, according to Peoria Public Radio, are out more than $72 million because of a lack of MAP funding?

Now that each side has washed its hands of any responsibility for selling short the futures of thousands of Illinois students who depend on MAP, it seems state elected officials have abdicated their responsibility to residents and students, alike.

And, all of this politicized nonsense underscores something this news editor knows to be true: the MAP grant made me who I am, and every college student in the state deserves the opportunity to say the same.

Combined with the federal Pell grants, MAP allowed a kid who was raised by his grandmother and carried a lunch vouture in high school to earn his associate’s degree from the College of DuPage and his bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University. MAP gave me the opportunity to redeem myself from, let’s call it, a less than stellar high school career and become the first member of my family to earn a four-year degree.

It wasn’t easy growing up with less than most of my classmates, but my family and I made due. There was zero guarantee that I would be able to afford college after I graduated high school, regardless of academics. When I made the decision to go to college and learned about the various forms of student financial aid available, an entire world of possibilities opened up for me. I learned to be grateful and accountable, and I learned just how important and necessary a college education is in today’s society.

I also learned just how critical those first years of college can be for students who don’t have the same family and financial support as many of their peers. Understanding that is the main reason why I would one day like to be a community college professor and help students who, like myself, are trying to beat the odds and gain access to higher education. And, it’s why our elected officials should stop talking and fund MAP. Most importantly, however, my college experience taught me to be patient.

But as a former MAP recipient – someone who owes his success to student financial aid and someone who feels current college students are more than collateral damage in a political war of words – my patience with Springfield and the politicians we’ve sent there has worn thin.

By Bugle Staff Area businesses were lauded for their efforts at the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce 12th Annual Best of Bolingbrook (BOBB) Awards banquet March 10 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club with Grove Dental Associates standing out as 2016’s Best of Bolingbrook Business.

“We are excited to be receiving this award from the Bolingbrook Chamber and look forward to serving the Bolingbrook community,” said Dr. Mina Chung, owner.

Known as one of the western suburbs best business award events, the evening sponsors included ATI Physical Therapy, COTG-A Xerox Company and G & W Electric.

Jim Galbraith of Advantage Chevrolet of Bolingbrook was presented with the Business Leadership Award, by Village Clerk Carol Penning. “I may be the individual that you see at the golf outings and fundraisers but am just part of the Advantage Chevrolet of Bolingbrook team,” said Galbraith.

Mayor Roger C. Claar presented the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award to Larry Greenwich of DuAll Heating and Cooling.

“It is truly humbling to receive this award in the company of past winners, Thank you Bolingbrook Chamber of Commerce,” said Greenwich.

Robyn and Todd McBroom of McBroom’s Cleaning Service were the recipients of the Executive Director’s Award for Community service, presented

by Kevin O’Keeffe, Executive Director of the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce.

The husband and wife duo whose last name really is McBroom said, “We are very thankful to the Bolingbrook Chamber and truly enjoy helping the Bolingbrook Community.”

Explore Lewis University’s Arboretum with a new app Understory, the visual app, is available through the Google Play store Four Lewis University Environmental Science and Computer Science students created an Android app for nature lovers that want to learn more about the trees on the Lewis University Romeoville Campus. The 410-acre campus is an arboretum, including more than 2,400 trees in addition to wooded areas.

The app is called Understory. Visit Google Play at https://play.google. com/store/apps/details?id=edu. lewisu.cs.thaotle.UnderStory to download the app.

Environmental Science students Patrick Dodge of Bolingbrook and Kirsten Rothenbucher of Romeoville and Computer Science students Francisco Cano of Midlothian and

Thao Le of Oswego built the app.

Dodge and Rothenbucher worked on photographing and geo-locating the trees on campus and writing the content and stories about them. Cano and Le developed the database to hold the information and pictures and wrote and tested the mobile app.

The app lists the various kinds of trees on the Lewis University Romeoville campus, which is designated a Tree Campus USA. The app presents information about each tree variety, including a picture of one specimen on campus and shows the location of that tree on a Google map.

Using Understory with a phone’s GPS, a visitor can find his or her way to the tree.

The app also includes a story about each tree to help add to the visitor’s understanding of its value and symbolism.

The mobile app features two modes. The Tree Mode shows a list of tree varieties from which

a user could choose one to learn about and locate. The Map Mode shows where all the trees in the list are located on a map of the Lewis campus. The app currently works on Android phones and tablets. A version that works with iPhones and iPads is currently in the works.

“The work of these four students reminds us that our academic disciplines aren’t silos. Some tremendous solutions come about because experts in different disciplines contribute their knowledge in complementary ways,” commented Dr. Ray Klump, chair and professor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

“One of the wonderful things about Computer Science is that its tools and concepts benefit virtually every other discipline. As computer scientists, we likewise benefit, because we get an opportunity to work with and learn from people in lots of different fields. That opportunity keeps our work fresh and valuable,” he said.

Lewis to feature Helen Mayer Jones, Azadeh Hussaini exhibit Mayer Jones is a mixed media artist; Hussaini is a visual painter An exhibition by Helen Mayer Jones and Azadeh Hussaini will be on display until March 28 in the Brent and Jean Wadsworth Family Gallery, located on Lewis University’s main campus in Romeoville. The free exhibit is open to the public and will be on display from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Helen Mayer Jones is a mixed media artist who uses metaphors that link her experiences with conflict and war by juxtaposing animal and human images. Jones earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Chicago.

Azadeh Hussaini was inspired by her emotional experiences as an immigrant visual artist, constructing mixed media, painting,

and assemblages that explore the human desires and conditions in general. Hussaini completed her Masters of Fine Arts at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

The Art Gallery is part of the Oremus Fine Arts Center at Lewis University. The Department of Art and Design manages the gallery, which include Lewis University

student shows, local and regional artist shows, annual high school exhibits, faculty shows, academic based exhibitions and cultural and religious based art shows.

Comprised of seniors from the Voyager media coverage area, the teams were selected in the form of a draft between sports editor Scott Taylor and sports reporter mark Gregory for the first time.

Team mark went on to win both games.

Team Mark wins in first-ever OT game In the first overtime game in the history of the Voyager Media Prep Shootout, Team Mark took down Team Scott 120-119 Sunday

night at the Sullivan Center on the University of St. Francis campus for the eighth annual event.

It was Lockport’s Brandon

Credit who hit the game-winning three-pointer in the corner to give Team Mark the lead in the final minute and Team Scott was unable to convert on two different opportunities to win the game.

“That last shot, I had a little space and I took the shot and it went in and that was cool,” Credit said. “They had a height advantage over us, but we came out with the W. I loved this game, there was a bunch of highlight plays and a green light all the time.”

The two teams were tied at 112112 at the end of regulation in a game that didn’t appear it would be close early.

Team Scott jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led 27-11 early on.

Team Mark slowly chipped away at the deficit the rest of the game and trailed 68-58 at the half.

A big run gave Team Mark its first lead at 97-94 as the two teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the game.

Team Mark starts fast, rolls to win in girls shootout A red-hot first half from Plainfield Central’s Hennessey Handy was enough for Team Mark to cruise to a 79-56 win over Team Scott Sunday at the Eighth Annual Voyager Media Prep Shootout at the Sullivan Center on the campus of the University of St. Francis.

Handy scored 17 of her gamehigh 21 points in the first half en route to being named the MVP of the game.

Her point total is the second most in the game’s history, behind the 24 points from Gabby Williams in 2013.

“I had a lot of fun. We communicated and played great and it was a good experience to graduate and be able to play in an all star game,” Handy said. “I tried to do as much as I could. I wanted to break the record because people were telling me it was only 24. I just like to go and go and go. I love the game of basketball and it was a great opportunity to play in this.”

Team Mark took a 9-2 lead early in the game and despite a run from Team Scott to cut it to 12-8, Team

Mark broke the game open to lead 34-11 and 44-26 at the half.

Every player scored for Team Mark. Joliet Central’s Monica Barefield had 13, while Mia Farrell of Joliet Catholic scored nine.

“I had a great time,” Barefield said. “We had no bigs on our team and we had all shooters, so we just ran the ball. “ Farrell enjoyed playing with the area public school players.

“It was great to play with Monica (Barefield) and other players I have played with or against since fifth grade,” she said. “It was really cool.

Everyone was pretty selfless for an all star game. It was a really fast paced game for us not knowing each other. We seemed to really gel and had the same tempo and ran with each other.”

“I had some old teammates here. It was fun, I liked all the personalities here, it was just a really fun game,” Patrick said. “It

“All star games are great,” Davis said. “I got to play with a lot of people I knew and with (Jalen Jackson) my friend who I have played with my whole life. I have always been able to shoot, but I like to pass first and I got some oops in. Usually, I like to drive, but today I let it fly.”

JCA’s Jalen Jackson scored 21, including showing jumping ability for the sub-6-foot guard.

“My goal here was to get at least one dunk and I got it,” Hackson said. “We just went out there and had fun and didn’t have a coach breathing down our neck. We had no worries and just had fun.”

“This is really exciting to come out here and play in this and get the dunks,” Fuller said. “Being around a bunch of good guys, it

Devon Sams of Bolingbrook had 15 points for Team Mark on five three pointers.

“It was fun,” Sams said. “The entire game, no matter who is on you, it is going to be another good player from another school. It is much more free of an atmosphere that a regular season or a playoff game. I made some shots tonight, but my teammates did a good job, even in am all star game, of moving the ball.”

Sams said he was determined to end his career with a win.

“Our plan was to stay in it until the end and then the last three of four minutes, we would start playing real basketball,” he said.

“It was their own fault (they lost).

They were scoring and looking at us, so we started playing defense, but they made it fun for us.”

Brad Perry of Maine South scored 14 points.

“It was good time. It was a good way to send out my high school

basketball career,” he said. “I never played with any of these guys and it was a unique experience to play with and against guys I haven’t played. I haven’t had those unique experiences, especially the one where I drove up the floor and reversed jammed. “ Credit tallied 10, Jacob Buchner of Plainfield South had nine, while Zach Grady of Bolingbrook scored five.

“It was a lot of fun. Hopefully my coach was out here and saw I could shoot the three point ball. I actually wanted to shoot one of the half court shots, it just wasn’t the time,” Grady said referencing his highlight reel 80-foot heave in the regional at Minooka. “At the end, we actually D’ed up and started playing, we couldn’t take the L tonight, we just couldn’t. It was a good game and a lot of fun.”

You have to have fun and get the crowd going. We always try to get the win at the end though. It is kind of weird because you always play against them and then you try to build chemistry with them for one game. But it was a good time.”

“It was a great time playing with the best kids in the area,” Krieger said. “It came down to crunch time. It was fun to play with the guys you played against in middle school and high school. It was a great time. On the court we are obviously rivals, but we came together as a unit. I definitely wish we would have played more defense earlier.”

Jordan Reed (Plainfield East) had nine and Scott Gustafson (Plainfield Central) scored eight.

“I had a good time for my last high school game,” Reed said.

“I’ve always known the Plainfield guys so it was good to get on the same team with them, especially Kevin, he is a great player. It was a good time playing with all of those guys.”

Richie Elias (Plainfield North) and Darick Anderson, Jr (Bolingbrook) had six, Tommy Digan (Maine South), Justin Windt (Plainfield Central) and Patrick Hunt (Northridge Prep) each scored five and Jon Arenas (Maine South) added two points. Henry Thompson (Plainfield North) also competed.

Westmont’s Kyle Domin (six points) was the only player not from Class 3A or 4A on either roster.

“They are all from big schools and I’m not, so I don’t know any of them,” Domin said. “It was great to get to talk to all of them. It was fun out there. It was great to represent Westmont. It felt good to know I was honored and had a great time.”

“We started off kind of rough,” Williams said. “We didn’t really know many other people but I think we got better as the night went on. It was fun and different playing against my teammates.”

Morgan Jones (Joliet Central) and Jalynn Estrada (Niles West) each had six points, Lauren Porcelli (Downers North) and Janelle Alba Garner (Maine East) each scored four points for Team Scott.

Alba Garner was also honored with the Jeremy Izzo Character Award.

“I wasn’t expecting it and I was just listening and all of a sudden was like, I do those things,” Alba Garner said. “It was awesome. and represent them here.”

Don’t argue with family about money At the end of the day, if it is your money, it is your financial decision to make Dear Dave, My dad and I have been having arguments over real estate and money. My wife and I are 33, and we have a rental property. We were trying to decide whether or not to sell the rental in order to pay down on our home. My dad has been very vocal about what he thinks we should do, and it’s starting to cause problems in our relationship. The two homes are our only debt, and we make $110,000 a year. We owe $132,000 on our residence and $80,000 on the rental. We could sell the rental for around $160,000.

What do you think we should do?

Ricky Dear Ricky, I wouldn’t sell the rental today, but it’s definitely a strong consideration in the future. You wouldn’t realize enough from its sale to pay off it and your home at this point, so work aggressively toward paying down the mortgage on your home. Then, when you get far enough down that the sale of the rental would pay it off, go for it if that’s what you both want.

home. How can I separate the scams online and on television from the real jobs where I can make money?

Randy Dear Randy, The vast majority of things you see in late-night infomercials and online—except of course for legitimate job hunter sites—are scams. I’m talking about the business-in-a-box kind of stuff and everything else. And I know you’ve seen the postings online that go something like, “My sister-in-law makes $50 an hour from home, and you can, too!” These scammers are the worst of the worst. Don’t waste a second of your time on that garbage.

My biggest worry is that you’re looking at your career the wrong way. Just making money shouldn’t be the measuring stick of success in your professional life. Whether you’re going to start a home business or work in an office for someone else, your work should engage you in doing something you know about and love.

Bolingbrook HS F.A.N.S.S. volunteer Kai Wahlgren: ‘Get involved!’

Bolingbrook High School Interim Principal Michele Albano talks with Kai Wahlgren who has been a part of BHS F.A.N.S.S. (Friends and Neighbors Supporting Students) for nearly two years.

Friends and Neighbors Supporting Students program supports BHS Kai Wahlgren loves to “give back” to the community he has called home for more than 15 years.

That’s why, despite a very busy personal and professional life, you can find Bolingbrook Park District’s Facility Program Manager volunteering an hour of his time every Tuesday morning to the Bolingbrook High School F.A.N.S.S. (Friends and Neighbors Supporting Students) program.

Designed

by Valley View Superintendent Dr. James Mitchem when he was Principal at BHS,

the F.A.N.S.S. program consists of parents and community members who volunteer their time to interact with students, and assist staff during the school day.

“Being a part of F.A.N.S.S. is definitely worthwhile,” said Wahlgren. “You get a lot more out of it than you’re giving.”

During his first year in the program, Wahlgren spent an hour a week with students as they arrived at school through Door 17 on the south side of the building and also in the cafeteria during lunchtime.

This year he starts his assignment at 6:30 a.m. at Door 1, which is the main entrance to the school.

“F.A.N.S.S. is very flexible,” he said. “You can give as much or as little time as you want. It’s not a huge commitment.”

Wahlgren, who also volunteers his time as an Assistant Scout

Master for Troop 35 and coached a variety of youth sports when his son (now a BHS sophomore) and daughter (BHS Class of 2015) were younger, says he is delighted to be able to interact with students many of whom he has known since they attended the Park District summer camp he runs.

“Seeing familiar faces is fun,” he said.

Wahlgren has nothing but praise for BHS students (“they’re very respectful”) and the BHS staff, especially the security team (“they

really care”). “This, for me, has been an interesting glimpse into what really goes on in the school during the day,” he said.

As to advice for someone thinking about volunteering for F.A.N.S.S., Wahlgren says “get involved and give back to your school.”

VVSD has launched a drive to expand the F.A.N.S.S. program.
